In its program of investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling at the Douglas Deposit in an attempt to find an additional source of supply of copper. The deposit, which was opened in 1878, was worked until 1883 and is reported to have produced between 2 and 3 million pounds of copper. Heap-roasting and smelting and later gravity concentration were employed in ore reduction. Old slag dumps and tailing piles from these operations still remain. In 1917, the American Smelting & Refining Co., purchased the mine, and in June 1918 production was started in a 125-ton mill, using both tables and flotation. The mill was closed December 31, 1918, and soon after the milling plant Was dismantled and removed. The mine has remained idle ever since. The deposit occurs in a mineralized zone that follows the schistosity. The principal metallic minerals are pyrite) chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite) arsenopyrite, sphalerite, magnetite) slight chalcocitel and cuprite. To search for additional ore shoots and to prove the known ore shoot at depth, the Bureau of Mines drilled seven holes, which totaled 2,117.4 feet. No additional ore was developed by this work.

A windowed-cell phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain equilibrium vapor- liquid data for a helium-bearing natural gas (Hogback) at temperatures from -100 to -250° F and pressures to 500 psia. Anomalous phase behavior resulting in the formation of two stable liquid phases occurred at tmperatures below -200° F and pressures above 200 psia. A review of the published literature on the occurrence of multiple-liquid phases included in the report indicates that the experimental results with Hogback gas are the first substantiated evidence of a vapor-liquid-liquid equilibria in a helium-containing natural gas.

An analysis of low-voltage shielded trailing cables is performed to develop a method for calculating the differences in operating costs between shielded and non-shielded cables. Two types of shield constructions are considered (SH-C and SH-D) for the three major underground coal mining methods. Data from laboratory and in-mine testing are presented in addition to an analysis of safety benefits. Recommendations for further investigations are proposed. Example calculations with sensitivity analyses are presented. Recommendations for further investigation include costs impact considerations.

In 1911 the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines instructed the chief mining engineer of the bureau , during an investigation of coal-mine safety conditions in Europe, to ask the directors of the various mine-experiment stations whether they would favor a European conference . The majority of the officials in immediate charge of experiment stations favored the plan , and Victor Watteyne, inspector general of Belgium, suggested that the United States call such a conference to be held immediately after the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry, which was to assemble in New York on September 3, 1912 . Accordingly, invitations were issued by the United States Government to those countries having mine-experiment stations , namely, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, Germany , and Great Britain, and to those that contemplated the establishment of such stations , Canada and Mexico . All but Great Britain and Canada accepted ; Mexico designated a representative , who later found it impossible to come. The Government of Great Britain in declining, expressed regret at its inability to accept ; an informal statement was made that the opening of the experimental gallery at Eskmeals , England , occupied the attention of the officials in charge . Delegates were appointed by their respective Governments as follows: Austria-Hungary, Julian Czaplinski , royal mining engineer. Belgium, Victor Watteyne , inspector general of mines . France, J. Taffanel, director of the Lievin experiment station . Germany, Carl Beyling, bergassessor, director of Dortmund experiment station. United States , Charles E. Munroe, consulting explosives expert and George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines . Subsequently Mr. William O'Connor , a mining engineer and mine operator of Wales , who opportunely appeared at the Pittsburgh station with letters of introduction from the South Wales Institute of Engineers and from prominent mining officials of Great Britain , was unanimously invited to take part in the meeting as an unofficial representative of Great Britain . Messrs . Beyling, Taffanel , and Watteyne were met in New York on September 3, by George S. Rice, who accompanied them to Washington, where they were welcomed by Director J. A. Holmes , of the Bureau of Mines , and where , with the delegates to the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry , they were presented to President Taft . Mr. Taffanel was unfortunately called back to France just before the scheduled time of the conference on account of a mine disaster ; the other delegates , including Mr. Czaplinski , convened at Pittsburgh on the morning of September 14. Mr. Rice, representing the Director of the Bureau of Mines , acted as temporary chairman , and called the meeting to order.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a new methodology for identifying and sorting scrap metals using two modern portable instruments: a thermoelectric sorter and a hand-held emission spectroscope. The method, tested on a 27-sample stainless steel and superalloy array, makes it possible to group and/or identify a typical mixture of high-value metal scrap in two or three steps, whereas as many as seven or eight steps are needed to perform the same separations using chemical spot tests. A portable fluorescent X-ray analyzer identified 19 of the 27 alloys in the sample array by name or type; these alloys are included in the microprocessor memory. The remaining alloys were identified by using the analyzer in its elemental analysis mode and comparing the results wit.h alloy specification chemistry.

In an effort to establish a highly productive mechanized mining system for anthracite beds pitching between 10 ° and 20 ° , for which conventional mobile equipment is not adaptable , the Bureau carried out an experiment in longwall mining using an Anderton- type drum cutter loader and friction - type yielding steel roof supports . The roof- support system proved to be inadequate for breaking the overhanging roof at the break line supports , with the result that the roof broke over the solid coal . The accompanying subsidence destroyed the continuity of the roof in the work area , and the project was discontinued .

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, two drill-split mechanical excavation mining system concepts are described, casted, and cost compared with conventional drill-blast mining systems. The concepts for the two drill-split mechanical excavation mining systems presented are (1) a method for steeply dipping narrow veins 0.6 to 1.2 m wide and (2) a longwall method for fiat-lying tabular ores. In the proposed systems, 70 to 80 pet of the ore is disposed of underground as backfill. For sortable ores, face area crushing, sorting, and direct stowage of run-of-mine waste and low-grade ores are proposed. The underground sorting and stowing of waste reduce materials handling, processing, and waste disposal costs by reducing the quality of ore transported to the surface by 70 to 80 pet (by volume). Because many of the tools and techniques proposed for use in these systems have little or no historical mining industry use, cost assignations are heavily influenced by engineering judgments and presented as prefeasibility-level cost estimates. These estimates, presented as discounted-cash-flow-rate-of-return (DCFROR) values, show the proposed systems to be at least as profitable as, and in some cases 50 pet more profitable than, conventional drill-blast mining.

This report describes recent improvements the Bureau of Mines made in the design of its shearer-clearer water-spray system for dust control on lonwgall shearer faces. The improvements were based on findings from a field survey of six mines and laboratory test results. The report in-cludes information on installation and use of the improved shearer-clearer system and describes a field installation and 3-week underground test of the system. The improved shearer clearer, like its predecessor, reduces dust concentrations in the shearer operator's walkway by splitting the airflow on the upwind side of the shearer and confining the dust cloud to the face side of the shearer. The improved shearer-clearer system utilizes more practical-mounting locations for the water sprays and requires less water consumption. In the underground test, the improved system maintained the clean-air split in the walkway up to 40 ft downstream from the shearer. To further improve dust suppression, cooling-water manifolds were relocated into the loading zone. The laboratory and underground tests showed that the improved shearer-clearer system and the techniques described can significantly reduce the respirable dust exposure of shearer operators from shearer-generated dust.

The Bureau of Mines, as a part of its goal to minimize occupational hazards associated with mining and mineral processing operations, has developed and field tested a compact exhaust air muffler for mechanized, jumbo-mounted pneumatic rock drills. The muffler is constructed of 1/8-inch sheet steel and has nominal dimensions of 1-3/4 by 9 by 13 inches. A directed air passage, flexible neoprene baffles, and an expandable slit-type outlet are incorporated to reduce drill exhaust air noise and eliminate muffler icing. Field tests in actual mining operations showed a l5-dbA reduction in exhaust noise and an 8-to 12-dbA reduction in overall drilling noise with no icing problems or decrease in drill performance. Data are presented on muffler construction, laboratory, and field test results.

To decrease reliance on foreign sources for the strategic and critical metals gallium and germanium, the U.S. Bureau of Mines identified and developed processing technology for two domestic sources of these metals: a Tennessee zinc residue and a Utah ore. Sulfuric acid (H2S04) solutions were used to solubilize gallium and germanium in both sources. Statistically designed experiments showed that the most important parameter for high metal extraction from zinc residue was the H2S04 concentration. At a concentration of 2.9M H2S04, 95 pct of the gallium was extracted, and at a concentration of 0.6M H2S04, 73 pct of the germanium was extracted. Controlled H2S04 concentration was also the key for high metal extractions (97 pct Ga, 87 pct Ge) from the Utah ore. Such control was achieved using a two-stage countercurrent leach circuit. Testing showed that the insoluble germanium in both the residue and ore was tied up with silica. Several methods for overcoming this problem are given. To recover gallium and germanium from the leach solutions, the solvent extractants octylphenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) (for gallium) and LIX 63-OPAP (for germanium) were identified. These extractants were tested in separate, continuous, solvent-extraction circuits yielding a gallium recovery of 94 pct and a germanium recovery of more than 90 pct.

A survey of the literature has been made covering the extraction of bismuth from raw materials, its separation from lead, and its subsequent refining. The use of aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused electrolytes in electrolytic refining is reviewed. This literature survey has been prepared preliminary to some proposed investigations concerning the electrometallurgy of bismuth, and, although an effort has been made to cover a majority of the applicable references, a critical review was not attempted and no assertion is made that this manuscript is exhaustive in nature. Titles of publications in parenthesis are translations from the language in which the reference was originally published.

This paper is one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to can and ore rate mines in various foreign countries. 1. The Pittsburgh bed is the most important bed in Brooke County and virtually the entire production of coal in the county comes from this bed. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 191 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 190 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Many of the existing thermodynamic values for the titanium halides are estimates, including all the entropies and high-temperature heat contents of their crystalline and liquid phases. This report contains the results of low-temperature heat capacity measurents (which lead to entropy values at 298.15° K,) and high-temperature heat-content measurements of four halides - trichloride, tribromide, tetrabromide, and tetraiodide. The new data are combined with selected heat-of-formation values at 298.15° K. to obtain improved values of the heats and free energies of formation of these halides at high temperatures, thus supplementing the previous data of Kelley and Mah.5/ ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This investigation was conducted under a cooperative arrangement between the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research. The work was done by Bureau of Mines personnel using Bureau of Mines calorimetric equipment. The Office-of Naval Research supplied the supporting funds and arranged for procuring the samples of the titanium halides. Although silicon carbide has been an important manufacture refractory for many years, knowledge of its thermodynamic values has been seriously lacking. In fact, some of the very properties that make it a useful substance, particularly chemical inertness, obstruct determination of its heats of formation and reaction. This paper reports the results of new measurements of the heats of combustion and formation, low-temperature heat capacity, entropy at 298.16°K., and heat-content and entropy increments between 298° and l,800°K. Two varieties of silicon carbide were studied -the common, hexagonal (type II) and cubic. The data are combined to obtain heat and free-energy-of-formation functions, which are given in tabular form. It is shown that the cubic variety is the more stable at temperatures to at least 1,800°K but, because of the inherent difficulties and errors in the heat-of-formation determinations at 298°K, it was not found possible to specify the free-energy difference accurately. The mechanism of silicon carbide formation from silica and carbon is not known and is not ascertainable from thermodynamic data. It appears improbable, however, that it can be a single-step reaction. Some reactions involving silicon monoxide gas and metallic Silicon, as possible intermediates in silicon carbide formation, are considered and shown to be thermodynamically feasible.

Production of crude petroleum in the Middle East (southwestern Asia) and in South America has increased greatly during recent years and has become a significant factor in the world's production of crude oil. Crude oil from fields in the Middle East increased from 256,164,000 barrels in 1946 to 305,833,000 barrels in 1947 and 417,201,000 barrels in 1948. Production from South American fields increased from 446,417,000 barrels in 1946 to 518,652,000 barrels in 1947 and 574,837,000 barrels in 1948. Crude-oil production from Canadian fields increased from 7,726,876 barrels in 1947 to 12,370,875 barrels in 1948, most of the increase being attributable to two fields, Leduc and Redwater, both represented by analyses in this report. Present indications are that production of crude petroleum from all these regions will continue to increase.
