The 19th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Civic Center, Charleston, w. Va., on October 2, 3, and 4, 1961. The meet was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other groups interested in safety. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1961 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: George Trevorrow (chairman), Bituminous Coal Operators' Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; Harry Gandy, Jr., National Coal Association; and James Westfield, Bureau of Mines.

This circular is the first of a series of publications describing uranium mining on the Colorado Plateau. Later circulars are planned in which exploration, development, and mining methods and costs will be described after a detailed study of various operations. Because of the introductory character of this paper, those well-publicized phases of the industry such as geography, history, prospecting, and exploration are described but briefly. Primarily, attention has been devoted to the general problems that are encountered in mining ore bodies and to the factors that affect the selection of development and mining methods. Those familiar with mining may class the information contained in this paper as elementary; however, its inclusion is considered necessary for the completeness of the series of papers. It will also serve as a source of information for people who are interested in uranium but are unfamiliar with mining.

The consumption of gasoline in the United States varies materially with the seasons; during some of the summer months it exceeds the rate of production and in the other seasons the production of gasoline exceeds the consumption, The usual practice of the larger refiners is to store surplus stocks during the winter season in order to meet the heavy demands during the summer months. Progress made by the quarrying and related industries of the United States during 1939 included increases in the number of men employed and the number of man-hours worked and reductions in the death and injury rates per million man-hours of exposure to risk. Forty-seven States reported quarries in operation; in each of 26 States the industry employed 1,000 or more men. Of these 26 States, 16 reported lower accident rates than in 1938. Among the operations of various types for which separate figures are published in this bulletin, the limestone, lime, and cement groups reported lower accident rates. During 1939, 79,449 men were employed in the quarrying industries. The period of operation of the plants averaged 236 clays per employee, with a total working time that equaled nearly 144 million man-hours. Accidents at the plants resulted in 48 deaths and 5,204 disabling injuries among the workers. Expressed as frequency rates, the accidents represented 0.33 fatality and 36.18 injuries for each million man-hours of work performed during the year. The major cause of fatal accidents inside the quarries was falls or slides of rock or overburden; nine deaths were reported from this cause. Four men were killed by explosives and four by falls of persons. Nonfatal injuries inside the quarries were clue chiefly to handling materials; about one-sixth of the total number at all operations in connection with quarries and related plants were in this class. Flying objects also caused numerous injuries, although only about one-half as many as did handling materials. Next in numerical importance were injuries from falls of persons. Then followed accidents caused by falls or slides of rock or overburden and accidents caused by machinery.

This Bureau of Mines manual is intended to provide a better understanding of ground movement and the technology available for measuring it, The manual deals with convergence, strata separation, lateral roof movement, stress, and support load in underground mines. The instruments that measure these ground control parameters are described in detail. Step-by-step procedures for selecting the appropriate instrument are presented, which consider such factors as approximate cost, installation procedures, data collection, and data interpretation; and an instrument selection worksheet is provided to facilitate the instrument selection process. Actual instrument case studies and a list of instrument suppliers are presented in the appendixes.

The land-pebble district of Florida, which in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of Sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of limey or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the rushing and formerly lost supplied the feed.

GENERAL INFORMATIONSince its introduction into coal mines, the use of Airdox has grown in popularity, especially in the Indiana and Illinois coal fields. Its use permits breaking dawn coal on shift, whereas the use of explosives for blasting coal on shift is prohibited by law in those States. Many of the hazards connected with the use of explosives are eliminated. The accident experience in the use of Airdox has been excellent with respect to the number of fatalities or serious injuries per million tons mined.The Federal Mine Safety Code specifies that Airdox lines should be grounded at the compressor and at other points of low resistance along the lines but should not be connected to tracks, pipe lines, or other possible power conductors. "INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was mode under a co¬operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior.Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub¬mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.SUMMARYA comparison of certain properties of the commercial aviation gasolines produced in the United States during 1950, 1951, and 1952 is presented in table 1, the 1952 data being average values from tables 3 through 7 of the present report. Trends in certain characteristics of these fuels may be seen in figures 1 through 5 which also indicate the minimum and maximum values. As may be observed, the properties of commercial aviation gasolines have not varied greatly during recent years. A list of aviation-fuel survey reports published by the Bureau of Mines is given on page 7.Table 2 presents a summary of data from table 8 and compares properties of aviation jet fuels of 1952 with summarized data on jet fuels of October 1951."

The development and industry adaptation of advanced technologies have led to many important uses for bismuth and its compounds. Bismuth-base alloys are essential for manufacturing jet engine turbine blades, lenses, and various safety devices, such as fire-protection sprinklers. The addition of bismuth to iron, steel, and aluminum imparts properties to these metals that makes them useful in diversified applications. Bismuth is also used widely in medicine, pigments, and electronics. The United States relies heavily upon imports from South America and Europe to meet its demand for bismuth, which is recovered chiefly as a byproduct of lead processing.

It is now widely accepted that horizontal stress is present nearly everywhere underground. Often it is more severe than the vertical stress. It is a major cause of roof control problems in underground mines. The AHSEM computer program contains two modules to improve mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. For development, the user specifies the orientations of the maximum horizontal stress, the entries, and the crosscuts. Angled crosscuts may be used, and the angles may be different for the right- and left-hand crosscuts. AHSEM then shows the user how the stress condition would vary as the entry and crosscut orientations are changed. The second module is for longwall mining. Severe stress concentrations can make headgate conditions hazardous when the entries are improperly oriented. AHSEM shows whether a particular longwall orientation and extraction sequence places the headgate corner in a stress concentration or in stress relief. It also estimates the magnitude of the stress concentration.

This report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on sulfide ores that contained gold and silver and, in some cases base metals. It is a companion paper to a recent similar report on oxide ores. Simple treatment methods employing the least possible equipment sometimes produce satisfactory results on marginal ores and in small-scale operations. Investigations of typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been made in continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno station, Bureau of Mines. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores as well as the conservation and recovery .of values in products that were discarded from former operations because of inability to treat them profitably. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas same involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials. The samples were representative of the districts from which they wore obtained, so this information should be helpful in the future development of these districts.

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,540,700 for the 1.06-million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $44,720,500 for the 4.99 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,850,700 to $75,693,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $8.76 to $7.53 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. The present abort paper contains a brief summary of tie investigations so far conducted upon natural gas.]

The Kokomo (Tenmile) mining district has had an output valued between $20 and $30 million, mostly from production of silver, lead, and zinc, since 1878. For many years before World War II, there was little production, as the complex nature of the ores made them unattractive at existing metal prices. Under the stimulus of the war, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines studied they district, and in October 1944 the Bureau of Mines began an exploration project, which included dia¬mond drilling, bulldozer trenching, and geophysical surveying. Project work was continued until March 1949, except for short recesses during 1945, 1947, and 1948. Forty-five diamond-drill holes, totaling about 13,000 feet, were drilled from underground and surface stations on the various properties in the district. Eleven bulldozer trenches, abut 2,400 linear feet, were excavated in an attempt to uncover the outcrop of the middle Quail limestone. These trenches ranged from 100 to 485 feet in length and reached a maximum depth of 15 feet. A limited geophysical investigation was made during the summer of 1946. The length of the traverses were: Magnetic, 990 feet; resistivity, 6,250 feet; and self-potential, 69,780 feet.

Since 1945, a commercial-scale pilot plant for the gasification of lignite has been operated by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak. The description, operation, and objectives of this pilot plant have already been described in previous reports (6, 7, 8). Although the experimental data obtained from the operation of the externally heated retort have been tabulated and summarized (1, 7), few studies have been made in the correlation of these data. The purpose of the present investigation was to review the data taken in tests of the lignite-gasification pilot plant and to correlate the gas-composition data in terms of their basic factors.

From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

As a part of the Bureau of Mines program for the discovery and development of critical and essential mineral deposits, the Darwin district, Inyo County, Calif., was chosen for investigation as a possible source of, tungsten ore. Two properties were active in the district at the time. One was producing tungsten concentrate and the other was preparing to produce tungsten concentrate as a byproduct in the milling of lead-zinc ore. The objective of the project set up by the Bureau was to investigate promising areas and to sample, thoroughly those which preliminary inspection indicated contained tungsten ore. Work was begun November 17) 1941, and completed January 19, 1942. In the course of the project, 18 localities were inspected and 9 were sampled. The following pages brief the history, note the location, and outline the physical features and geology of the district. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is described and supplemented with assay maps.

The mineral asbestos, because of its unique fibrous character, is allied to cotton and wool but has the advantage of heat and fire resistance; therefore, it supplies many industrial needs for which no substitutes are yet available. This report covers the essential features of the asbestos industry, including occurrence, production, mining, milling, utilization, international trade, and marketing. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products, but domestic sources furnish only a small fraction of the raw material required. As the United States is dependent to so great an extent on foreign supplies of raw materials, the bulletin deals at length with the asbestos industry in foreign lands. Several reports now available deal with the industry in individual countries. Among them are Chrysotile Asbestos in Canada, by J. G. Ross; Asbestos in the Union of South Africa, by A. L. Hall; and a series of articles on the Russian industry, by Walter A. Ru Keyser. These have been drawn upon freely, and full acknowledgment is hereby made for the helpful information thus secured. The file of the magazine Asbestos also has furnished many valuable data touching all phases of the industry. Many other books and articles listed in the bibliography at the end of this bulletin have been utilized and have been supplemented by the author's intimate acquaintance with the industry for about 20 years. The intent is to present a concise, world-wide, historical, technical, and economic treatment of the asbestos industry.

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for the Philippines for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work was done through the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J01225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) eimber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and balsting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.
