The Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive investigation of the old lead diggings in the Wisconsin portion of the Upper Mississippi lead-zinc field in September 1947 to determine whether enough lead was present in shallow deposits to justify exploitation by modern open-pit methods. Because of the large number of areas of surface diggings, it was necessary to limit the investigation to only a few representative areas. Initial studies, therefore, included test pitting and hand auger-drill sampling at two sites n Grant County and one site in Lafayette County to determine whether further extensive sampling in that area was warranted. Results indicated that certain portions of the area contained substantial amounts of lead and, zinc; accordingly, more detailed sampling was undertaken, and the results will be described in a later report. Another phase of the general investigation was drilling and test pitting at the Nigger Jim Lafayette County. This 10 the third of the series and summarizes the work on the White property to develop the western extension of the Big Dick ere body, where four churn-drill holes totaling 679 feet were drilled. Inclusion of the White property in the study was justified because old reports indicated (1) production of ore from mines in the vicinity disclosed a high ratio of lead to zinc, (2) ore was present in the west heading of the Big Dick mine when it closed, and the attitude of the Big Dick ore body was such that a vertical hole would encounter ore that might be present.

A deep cutting continuous miner, HH456, was tested under production-mining conditions at the Joanne Mine, Rachel W. Va., for about 1 ½ years (226 production days). The miner was run in two modes: a low head-rpm, deep cutting and high rpm, shallow-cutting mode. These tests confirmed that deep cutting and slow cutter speed reduce respirable dust significantly under production mining conditions. Quantitative reductions in dust, in deep vs shallow cutting, were 73°; in return air and 63% at the operator's location. Production rate, (tons/shift), and bit consumption rate did not show any relationship to deep or shallow cutting. Reliability and maintainability of the miner were worse in deep cutting mode due to cutter drive shaft failures; the cutter shaft problem was solved through improved material and design. This is the third report of investigations dealing with the application of electrolytic manganese to steel-foundry practice and the seventh in a series of reports dealing with tests to establish the technological acceptability of electrolytic manganese in the iron and steel industries. The work was carried out by Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines as part of an extensive program for the development and utilization of domestic ores. The electrolytic manganese used in the tests was produced by the Bureau at its Boulder, City, Nev., pilot plant by the process developed by the Bureau of Mines.

The Torpedo copper mine in the Organ Mining, District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered in 1899, and production of copper from oxidized-ore deposits was begun in 1900. Production continued through 1907, but operations were only intermittent frown 1907 through 1921. The production of copper during these periods amounted to about 3,500,000 pounds. Reserves primary sulfide copper ore were believed to occur below the old workings, and after a detailed examination of accessible workings and a study of drilling records of several private companies by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, a development program of diamond core drilling was initiated. This investigation was started October 3, 1949; and completed April 30, 1950. Four holes totaling 2,122.3 feet wore diamond-drilled, and 70 samples were analyzed. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feet drill having special rods and core barrels to increase the recovery of core in critical zones. This report describes the location, history, ore deposits, and factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines from the drilling.

"Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber-sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases soma of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The maximum energy to be supplied through the cable, based upon the horsepower of the motor and the degree to which the motor is loaded.3. The voltage of the supply and the variation of the voltage at the receiving end.4. The time length of current flow and whether continuous or intermittent.5. The kind of current (direct or alternating).6. The amount of ca· le left or the reel.7. The type of cable used.8. A 5-hole pattern was drilled from the surface at a site near Oak Grove, Jefferson County, Ala., to degasify the gassy Mary Lee coal bed in advance of mining. Gas and water production was monitored for 1 year, 4 months to allow gas flow to stabilize fully. A thickened water stimulation treatment was designed and applied in one hole of the pattern to evaluate this degasification technique for the Mary Lee coalbed. A gas production rate of 70,000 fts/day after stimulation treatment indicates that the use of vertical boreholes coupled with hydraulic fracturing in advance of mining the Mary Lee coalbed would provide for more rapid degasification and could provide a possible source of natural gas.

"1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come :from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sevanee has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although some coal has been produced from them.2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on l,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed ·were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal are estimated in beds 28 inches and more 'thick. This recovery is based on total thickness of coal in the bed (less partings 3/8-inch thick or more), rather than on the thickness of the coal actually mined. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian Region. The combined weighted average recovery for the Sewanee and Battle Creek beds in Marion County, as determined by this investigation, is 60.9 percent. Based on this, the recoverable reserves of coal in Marion County are estimated at 34 million tons."

The data in this circular were taken from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and published annual reports of the Wyoming State Inspector of Coal Mines. The tables included are complete only' with regard to major disasters; the Bureau of Mines considers a major disaster one in which 5 or more men are killed. However, minor disasters and gas ignitions recorded in these publications are included. It is known that a number of gas ignitions have occurred of which no record is available. This is one of a series of papers by the Bureau of Mines giving by States available data regarding coal-mine explosions. This information is published in condensed form in the belief that it may be of vale to mine operators in preventing future coal-mine explosions.

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. During this period, eight properties were explored, and an additional property was mapped.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch; Lowell B. The Greenburg-Smith impinger was developed at the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922 in the course of an investigation of dust-sampling instruments available at that time. Although it is not used extensively outside of the United States, it is now soused in this country to collect samples for the determination of any dustiness, and most of the information correlating degree of dustiness with physiological effect has been obtained by the impinger method. The chief disadvantages in the use of the regular impinger, especially in mines and other places accessible with difficulty, are its bulk weight, and power requirements. It requires a source either of electricity or of compressed air, which necessitates connections and extension of existing supply lines to each sampling point; the only alternative is the use of a relatively large pump hand-operated with considerable effort.

For several years the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington have been cooperating, in a study of coal tabling. The first pert of the work consisted of experiments using, one of the commercial-sized coal washing tables in the laboratories of the College of Mine. As an outgrowth of this work, hindered-settling classification has been successfully applied in the tabling of coal4, and several important improvements, mainly in the riffling, have been made in the table itself. Both of these developments have resulted in increasing the rapacity and efficiency of the coal-washing table. In order to facilitate further progress in this work an investigation has been undertaken to throw more light on the mechanism of table separation. This report describes reconnaissance by the Federal Bureau of Mines of titanium-bearing sandstone in Kemper County, Miss. The purpose was to determine the ilmenite, rutile, and associated heavy-mineral content of black-sand-bearing Eocene deltaic formations" The investigation was part of a survey of titanium resources of the United States. Ilmenite (FeTi03), an iron-titanium oxide, is the major titanium-bearing mineral consumed in the titanium pigment industry. Rutile (Ti02), titanium oxide, is used mainly in producing welding-rod coatings and titanium metal. The fieldwork was conducted during the first half of November 1959. Seven holes, totaling 304 feet of bore, from which 64 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the north-central part of the county; and two holes, totaling 172 feet of bore, from which 34 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the southeastern part.

The safety record of the metal mining and milling industries in 1965 is reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. The overall injury-frequency rate of 23.77 per million man-hours was 5 percent lower than in 1964 and was the lowest annual rate in a statistical history beginning with 1931. The injury-severity rate of 3,521 days lost per million man-hours in 1965 represented a 5-percent improvement over 1964. However, the total of 3,825 disabling work injuries comprised 61 fatal and 3,764 nonfatal injuries, one and 92 more, respectively, than in 1964. At primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants, the injury-frequency rate of 8.97 per million man-hours in 1965 was 13 percent lower, but the severity rate percent higher than in 1964. these plants in 1965, 4 more of 1,173 days lost per million man-hours was 17 There were 12 fatal and 971 nonfatal injuries at and 28 fewer, respectively, than in 1964.

At the request of several Federal agencies, tests were conducted on a relatively recent type of anthracite -burning equipment named the Anthratube. This device, rated at 130,000 B.t .u. per hour, was designed to burn Pea-size anthracite automatically for steam or hot-water house heating and for domes-tic hot -water supply. This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Clay, Gilmer, and Lewis Counties, W. Va. In 1966, almost 1.3 million tons of coal was mined in these counties, of which more than one-half was from the Pittsburgh coalbed. Washability analyses were made of 16 coalbed samples. Of these, only 11 samples could be upgraded to metallurgical quality. For steam or power generation five of the coals were of low sulfur content as received. The remaining samples were generally of medium sulfur content even after upgrading.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.

This report is the 19th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations. The first 17 reports covered fiscal years; however, the 18th report3/ covered the 18 months from July 1, 1952, to December 31, 1953, to permit the publication of this and subsequent reports on a calendar-year basis. Most of the material in this report relates to publications by Bureau authors issued during the reporting period. Some work is referred to on which the results have not yet been published or may not be published for security or other reasons. In a few instances publications are mentioned that were issued before the reporting period but were not included in previous reports. Further details on the published work described herein may be found in the publications cited in the footnotes. Research and technologic work on coal by the Bureau is directed toward developing and encouraging increased conservation of coal resources through safer and more efficient mining, preparation, and utilization. Significant advances were made during the year in these fields, particularly in coal-mine safety and in preparation and utilization of the various ranks of coals.

Three of the five primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest have facilities in the region to make aluminum mill products. Only one of the three, however, produces a variety of shapes and forms. The principal reason for the lag in development of an aluminum mill products industry was found to be transportation cost. The long range outlook is for expansion, based mainly on growth of the western market for aluminum used in construction, containers and packaging, electrical applications, diesel trucks, mobile homes, and irregation pipe. Consumption of western aluminum mill products in 1985 is projected at 1.1 million tons, compared with estimated consumption of 250,000 tons in 1961.

This report disucsses the formulation of a mathematical model for the steering of a conveyor belt by a flat return idler and a troughed idler under various loading conditions. Significant parameters associated with belt training are identified. The generation of a skewed flat return idler model in terms of a steering force and self-aligning torque is presented. Development of the mathematical model for the flat return steering idler is illustrated for the case of no circumferential slip occurring and for the assumption of a bidirectional slip mechanism. Experimental results supporting the theoretical analysis is presented.

"A search for manganese ore by core-drill exploration was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in the Philipsburg mining district in Granite County, Mont., in 1939 and 1940. This work was based on detailed studies of the manganese ore bodies of the district previously made by the Geological Survey.In 1949 further search for manganese in the district was deemed advisable. Diamond drilling was begun the following year as a joint program by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines with the primary purposes of probing ore-leasing structures and extending the limits of known ore bodies. A secondary objective was to test a geologic theory based on a new conception of manganese-ore localization. The exploration targets were designated and the drilling results interpreted by the Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Mines was responsible for the drilling, sampling, and core handling. Improved drilling equipment and methods were utilized in an effort to obtain better core recoveries than resulted from the earlier drilling campaign.The Philipsburg mining district, Granite County, Mont., is 27 miles south of Drurrnnond, about 45 miles airline northwest of Butte, and 1 mile east of Philipsburg. During the course of the investigation patented lode-mining claims owned by the American Machine & Metals, Inc., the Contact Mines, Inc., and the Moorlight Mining Co. were diamond drilled.The district has been an important source of domestic manganese dioxide ore since local recognition of the mineral's importance during World War I. Peak annual output in 1918 of about 127,000 tons of manganese ore was utilized principally by the steel industry. A small but relatively steady output has persisted to the present to satisfy demands by battery manufacturers for battery-grade manganese dioxide.The known manganese deposits of the district are in sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. These rocks lie along a north-trending anticline traversed by a series of east-west tension veins. The east flank of the anticline terminates at a steep-dipping fault contact against a small granodiorite batholith.Replacement deposits of manganese oxides and carbonates occur locally in or closely associated with tension veins cutting calcareous rocks, or adjacent to the intrusive. Rhodochrosite has been a common accessory mineral in deposits valuable chiefly for lead, zinc, and silver. Some of the replacement deposits characteristically are irr2gular in outline, whereas others have fairly regular walls marking the limits of favorable beds."
