The Bureau of Mines, in pursuing its goal of extending the life span of strategic materials, conducted field corrosion studies at the East Mesa Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) in the Imperial Valley, Calif., to determine the optimum materials of construction for use in geothermal mineral energy resource recovery plants. These studies included characterization of geothermal environments and in situ corrosion testing. The corrosion resistance of 10 alloys exposed to 5 brine and steam process environments was evaluated using the low-salinity, high-temperature brine from geothermal well Mesa 6-1. Of these alloys, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy S, Incone1 625, titanium-2nickel, and 316 L stainless steel had excellent resistance to corrosion in all of the process environments; E-Brite 26-1 and 430 stainless steel had fair resistance. Although general corrosion rates for 4130 steel and 1020 carbon steel were substantially higher than those of the other iron-base alloys, these two alloys could prove useful in low-salinity process environments because of their low cost. Aluminum alloy 5005 was the least corrosion resistant alloy and pitted severely. Scales formed on all of the alloys in every process environment. Calcite, aragonite, and an amorphous silicate were the major components of the scales.

The purpose of this study is to determine worker acceptance of modified mine equipment at various intervals during a twelve month period. A survey instrument was administered to the workers by two experienced miners in four interviews. All four interviews showed a significant positive response to all modifications, except the small size of the cab of the shuttle car; however, the small size produced significant negative responses with respect to comfort in each of the four interviews. Initially, (interviews one and two), there were significant negative responses with respect to manufacturer receptivity to operator suggestions and program management follow-through on operator suggestions; however, the third and fourth interviews showed no significant negative responses with respect to these items. Likewise, there were significant neutral responses in the first two interviews; however, the third and fourth interviews showed no significant neutral responses with respect to these items.

The ISMS program provided for the development and demonstration of equipment modifications for improved safety in both conventional and continuous coal mining systems. This report documents the success of the program in identifying accident hazards in underground coal mines with 4-to 8-foot seam heights, in designing modifications to reduce the hazards, and in demonstrating improved safety through extended underground use of the ISMS equipment.

[Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. The Bureau of Mines studied the potential availability of primary antimony (Sb) from demonstrated resources in 21 mines and deposits in market economy countries (MEC's). Twelve of these properties were evaluated as producers and nine as non- producers. The 21 studied properties contain 499,600 mt Sb as demonstrated resources, of which 304,000 mt is recoverable as antimony metal; another 973,500 mt Sb is contained in inferred resources. Recoverable antimony from demonstrated U.S. deposits is only 10,700 mt, just 3.5 pct of the MEC total. Domestic production of primary antimony from operating mines has averaged only 561 mt/yr over the 10-yr period 1975-84. This represents just over 5 pct of total U.S. consumption of primary antimony, which averaged 11,081 mt/yr during the same period. The United States will thus continue to rely on imported ores andlor concentrates, antimony oxides, and metal to satisfy domestic industrial requirements. At production costs up to $1.15/lb Sb, 110,000 mt of refined antimony is potentially available from 10 of the 21 studied properties. At $2/lb, 294,000 mt Sb is available, and at $3/lb, the total rises to 304,000 mt Sb available from all evaluated producers of refined antimony.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied its mine fire diagnostic method to an abandoned anthracite mine fire site in Carbondale, Lackawanna County, P A. The technique to locate fires in abandoned coal mines and coal refuse piles includes the determination of hydrocarbon concentrations in mine gases, the imposition of an underground gas flow direction, and use of a surface mapping method, to define heated and cold zones in underground coal strata. The heated zones at Carbondale were characterized by elevated methane concentrations. The results of 25 communication tests were analyzed to define 2 large (approximately 100 by 250 ft) and 5 small, isolated heated zones. An approximate correlation existed between the location of the heated zones and areas of anomalous snow melt. The correlation between the results of the diagnostic? test and subsurface temperatures was not significant.

As part of the Bureau of Mines health and safety research program in strata control, a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system capable of pene-trating approximately 10 ft into the mine roof has been devised to identify anomalistic conditions. The GPR system consists of a transmitter with carrier frequencies of 250, 500, and 1,000 MHz, utilizing a dipole antenna, and a receiver, consisting of a dipole antenna fed into a sampler with a time base housed in a storage oscilloscope. A computer was utilized for data acquisition and data processing. Data analysis by computer enhancement revealed recognizable return ra-dar signatures from the middle man rock and main roof of the test site. These stratigraphic anomalies can be cataloged for recognizable fea-tures, which from the past history of the mine may have been shown to create strata control problems. Early recognition of such features could lead to immediate corrective actions and result in the saving of lives.

Ten natural gases containing from 0.023 to 8.4 percent helium were investigated. In seven high-helium samples, the isotopic abundance of Ne21 was greater than in the atmosphere, being supplemented by 33 to 85 percent of "excess" or "radiogenic" Ne21. The ratio of He4/Ne21(rad) in these gases was evaluated and found to vary between 2.9 x 107 and 5.9 x 107 , a factor of approximately 2. Argon concentrations were determined by the isotope dilution method. The isotopic ratios of Ar40/Ar36 in the high-helium gases were from 5 to 75 times the atmospheric value, with the Ar40 being about 80 to 99 percent radiogenic in nature. The ratios of He4/Ar40(rad) in all 10 gases were evaluated and found to range from 4 to 18. The isotopic ratio of N14/N15 in four of the high-helium gases was essentially the same as in the atmosphere; in three cases it was approximately 5 percent higher than the atmospheric value of 272.0. The genesis of nitrogen and the relationship of nitrogen to helium in natural gases were reviewed and are discussed in terms of a theory for the concurrent generation of nitrogen, helium, radiogenic neon 21, and petroleum (hydrocarbon gases and liquids).

"Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the Gas produced with crude contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion.Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no carious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks,be equally effective in counter- acting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1920, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a ""composite"" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co, in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the toot being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, and the Parkersburg Rig and Reel Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistance to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the tanks were not subjected to contact with the quantities o highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of the aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in large quantities of brine would be handled, for pact experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines."

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report investigates shield mechanics and component stress development in a two-legged longwall shield for unsymmetric canopy and base contact configurations. Previous studies analyzed shield behavior for symmetric contact configurations. The goals of these efforts are to improve longwall support selection and design. This study provides vital information that will help develop improved procedures for performance testing of longwall supports and will benefit future research to improve support design through stress optimization and evaluation of failure mechanisms. Combinations of six canopy (three symmetric and three unsymmetric) and six base (four symmetric and two unsymmetric) contacts provided a total of 36 configurations for evaluation. Of these 36 configurations, 10 were eliminated because of fixture limitations or shield instability. Controlled vertical and horizontal displacements were applied by the Bureau's mine roof simulator to the remaining 26 configurations. Component responses were determined from pressure transducer and strain gage instrumentation in order to identify contact configurations and boundary displacements that produced maximum loading in each of the support components. This report describes these test results and provides conclusions relevant to critical contact configurations for performance testing of longwall supports.

Exxon Minerals Company, a division of Exxon Corporation, has been exploring for base metal deposits in the Precambrian volcanic rocks in northern Wisconsin since 1970. Aerial electromagnetic surveys of the area, conducted in 1974, reported an anomaly, near Crandon, in Forest County. In the summer of 1975, the first diamond drill entered the anomaly, representing the 25th prospect Exxon had drilled in Wisconsin. This first hole revealed significant mineralization containing zinc and copper. Subsequent drilling confirmed the discovery of a sizeable zinc-copper massive sulfide are body. 1.1.2 Location The deposit is located in northeastern Wisconsin within a topographical high called the Northern Highlands region. The deposit lies about 5 miles directly south of Crandon and about 2 miles east of State Highway 55 on Sand Lake Road (see fig. 1). Other local communities include Rhinelander 28 miles west, Antigo 45 miles south, and Iron River and Iron Mountain, in Michigan, 75 and 44 miles east and north of Crandon respectively. In relation to the lakes and streams, the deposit lies 0.25 miles north of Little Sand Lake, and about 1 mile south of Swamp Creek.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of physically separating Missouri and Minnesota granites into commercially usable fractions of feldspar, quartz, and mica by mineral dressing techniques. The probability of r covering a feldspar fraction from raw granite suitable for commercial uses was developed through correlation of the iron oxide content by extensive petrographic studies. This probability evaluation also included Wisconsin granites and a high-feldspar iron ore concentration tailing from Missouri. Laboratory recoveries of feldspar and quartz were on the order of 80 percent. Mineral content of each fraction was generally over 95 percent, indicating excellent response to separatory techniques, Acid leaching of feldspar and quartz concentrates to remove iron oxide improved the grades chemically; however, occluded iron oxide particles in the leached products prevented attaining top grades of feldspar. Mica was removed as scrap grade at low recoveries. Each concentrate conformed to some category of commercial feldspar, quartz, or mica.

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al. Progress of Bureau of Mines research related to oil and gas during the past fiscal year has been marked by the publication of more than 40 reports on the various phases of the work . These include papers dealing with the production of oil and gas , transportation of gas , chemistry and refining of petroleum , thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons , and the processing and utiliza- tion of helium . As an additional service to Pennsylvania oil operators , a new suboffice was opened in Bradford , Pa . , during the year . With this addition , the work of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Branch of the Bureau of Mines is now conducted in two large stations , the Petroleum Experiment Station , Bartlesville , Okla . , and the Petroleum and Oil Shale Experiment Station , Laramie , Wyo . , and three field offices and laboratories at San Francisco , Calif . , Dallas , Tex . , and Franklin, Pa., and two suboffices, Wichita Falls, Tex., and the newly opened suboffice at Bradford, Pa. In addition, this Branch operates large-scale helium-production plants in Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico, and maintains ex- tensive helium-bearing gas reserves in Texas and New Mexico. All helium opera- tions are supervised from headquarters at Amarillo, Tex. A small headquarters staff is in Washington, D. C. A backward glance at the road traveled during the past several years by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Eranch of the Bureau of Mines brings out a general background for the events of the fiscal year 1949. Throughout the fiscal year 1945, the activities of the Branch were still mainly concerned with such war activities as making special field studies for the Petroleum Adminis- tration for War, finding ways of increasing rates of production, and supplying data pertaining to the manufacture of aviation and jet-propulsion fuels. A period of adjustment came in 1946, characterized by a turning from war to peace procedures and efforts to give wide distribution to technical facts ob tained in wartime research; also, there came a realization that the demands of war had broadened the horizons of research. This was emphasized in 1947, when a peacetime program was restored, based upon the long view of the Bureau's place as a research agency in oil and gas. Close attention was given to tech- nical detail in 1948, and emphasis was placed on maintaining a balance between the industrial need for technical knowledge and Governmental-research possi- bilities in the fields of (1) withdrawal of petroleum from natural deposits, (2) utilization of petroleum and its products, and (3) commercial utilization of helium. Studies of petroleum production and utilization and helium production and utilization are the normal functions of the Branch. These functions (sometimes expressed in different words) have been the mainstay of this organization since initiation of the work. The details of approach vary with changing conditions, but, fundamentally, the functions have been the same in both peace and war. The work of the past fiscal year has emphasized the advantages that accrue when Government and industry join in a wise use of technical and scientific knowledge gained through research. Outstanding evidence of the beneficial results of cooperative effort by the Bureau of Mines and various organizations is found in the following typical examples, the details of which are discussed in the body of this report. Working in close cooperation with operators along the Gulf Coast, the Natural Gasoline Association of America, and the National Association of Cor- rosion Engineers, the Bureau found, through field testing, that corrosion protection by means of chromates in high-pressure gas-condensate wells costs less than $1 per million cubic feet of gas produced. Laboratory experiments to measure the corrosion effects of carbonic and propionic acids on various steels and alloy steels gave data that will serve as guides in the selection of new. materials for the construction of well equipment to be tested by industry under actual service conditions.

Nuclear detonation data were accumulated, studied, and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines to visualize how nuclear explosives might be used in a shale?-oil industry, The evaluation shows that the Green River Formation at the semi-isolated locale of Piceance Creek Basin, in northwestern Colorado; is thick and widespread enough to warrant consideration of nuclear mining in lieu of conventional methods, Because cost data for nuclear explosions are limited; cost comparisons are made largely by assumptions. Also described are the history of the shale-oil industry, the geology and size of oil-shale resources; and conventional mining methods and processing technology.

The object of this program was to extend the capabilities of visual paging systems both in size and function. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line for communication, monitoring, and remote control. A central station, using a minicomputer, transmits signals by phase inversion modulation of a 16,384 Hz carrier to as many as 999 remote units. The remote unit addressed returns An echo to indicate that it is functioning and, in the case of monitor units, to convey the monitor data. Magnetically latched display dis[c]s, which can be seen from both sides when posted, are used for visual paging. Lists of the addresses of posted pages, unanswered pages, and non-echoing units are prepared by the central station computer. The system was designed to be intrinsically safe and should operate for three months on a 12-volt lantern battery.

Seven configurations for panel entries of a longwall coal mine are compared and ranked according to structural stability. These entry configurations are analyzed using three-dimensional finite element modeling The models include large dimensions to minimize boundary effects, elastoplastic constitutive relations, and simulated excavation and construction of support systems. The stability criteria are formulated in a quantitative manner to facilitate the ranking of the entry configurations. These criteria are based on the expected volume of caved rock in the entry openings. The stability ranking is applied to the entry excavation phase, the headgate phase, and the tailate phase of the entry life cycle. Parametric variations are applied using two-dimensional finite element models to determine the sensitivity to changes in mining and design parameters.

"INTRODUCTION Anyone who has had frequent occasion to compare methods of analysis and testing as employed in European countries with those used in the United States has felt the need of a table or graph giving the relationship between the units of measurement of finely powdered materials. Most of the few published comparisons include only two series of sieves and often require tedious interpolations to adapt the data of one series to the series more familiar to the reader. To eliminate such deficiencies, the author hopes that the discussion and comparison of fine-series sieve sizes presented here will conserve the time of interested research workers.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe author is deeply indebted to Virginia B. Solvig, senior chemist, for valuable suggestions in preparing the manuscript.SQUARE-MESH-SIEVE SERIES OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIESSieving analyses of powdered materials have been placed on a comparable basis in different countries by the introduction and adoption of standard sieve-scale series. Series of wire-cloth square-mesh sieves in common I oratory and industrial use include: Institution of Mining and Metallurgy standard laboratory screens (I.M.M.); British Standards Institution standard for fine-mesh test sieves (B.S. or B.S.I.); Tyler standard sereer-scale sieves; United States standard sieve series; Deutsche Industrial-Nermen (DIN); and the standard control sieves of the Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR). With the exception of the I.M.M. series in which the opening is equal to the diameter of the wire, the general proportions of the various series of sieves are similar. The size of British and American sieves is designated by the number of meshes or openings per linear inch or, more recently, by the number of microns per linear sieve opening. In a technical sense the word ""mesh"" is meaningless, unless the diameter of the wire is also given, so that the size of the opening can be determined. On the Continent sieves are designated either by the nunber of Mesh per linear centimeter or by the number of openings per square centimeter."

"In a previous paper the Bureau of Mines. 3/ presented in condensed tabular form all analyses of Texas crude oils made by the Bureau up to March 193K. This previous report states;The first Al well in Texas was drilled near Oil Springs, Nacogdoches County, in 1863-67. However, the first oil field of major importance in the State was discovered at Corsicana,Navarro County, in 1895. Since that time the petroleum industry try in the State has spread and grown until today petroleum from Texas is an important commodity in world petroleum markets.Since March 1939 samples of Texas crude oils from many new fields, and some older fields not covered in the previous report, nave been analyzed. Those analyses arc reported in the present paper. The annual production by years from 1896 to 1940, inclusive, taken from the figures in the Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. Production for 1896-1940, inclusive, totals 6,579,715,000 barrels.Various authors reported upon developments and production in the Texas fields in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Petroleum Division, for 1941. 4/"
