The shock tunnel located at the Missouri University of Science and Technology Experimental Mine is 65 feet 9 inches (20.0406 m) in length. The tests performed inside of this tunnel are either arena tests or shock interaction and transfer (SIT) tests. Arena tests simulate a large open air blast, with lower explosive weights, by elongating the impulse of the blast wave. SIT tests are conducted to determine how the produced shock wave interacts and transfers its energy into a target object located at the end of the tunnel. The target used in this research is multilayered, with each layer being a different material. The targets are 2 ft. by 4 ft. (0.6096m by 1.2192m) pieces of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), DOW polystyrene foam insulation, and gypsum drywall. The order of these materials varies with each test. This shock tunnel is unique, because the geometry changes along its length. To fully understand how the shock waves are affected by these changes, a working model was needed. The second purpose of this model is to confirm the maximum charge size of 400 grams (14.11 oz.) of C4 that can be detonated inside the tunnel without causing damage to or failure of the tunnel, thus reducing the amount of time needed in downtime and repair. The model predicts pressures in various locations both within the tunnel and the attached target, thus assisting in determining where failures would likely occur. In the process of generating this model, several problems were encountered, including filling the tunnel with air, meshing the complex geometry, and creating the tunnel in a CAD system. This paper will discuss how these problems were solved. A working model was created by using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics and ANSYS Autodyn. The tunnel geometry file was created using SolidWorks and includes the complex geometry changes along with the target and its mount located at the end of the tunnel. The results produced by the model were compared to the field SIT tests. The comparison of the results from both the model and the experimental testing showed a similar trend in the pressure traces.

The steel is thick and the structure is heavy but gravity can be a blaster’s best friend. This entry did not win in a very competitive category. Railroad and blast induced vibrations were measured in the vicinity of the proposed Big Bend Cutoff. Peak horizontal and vertical particle velocity relations were developed using least squares regression analysis. The dominant frequencies of these data are in the range of 30 to 50 hz. Therefore, allowable charge weight per 30 msec delay curves were generated for buildings (2 in./sec) and unlined tunnels (8 in./sec). A blasting contour map is presented for this site.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

The Pinkerton Tunnel open cut project is part of the National Gateway Clearance Initiative improvement project to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic states and their ports to midwest markets in the U.S. This project involved drilling and blasting of 1.2 million bank cubic yards of rock over a 14 month period while maintaining rail traffic of two passenger and 38 freight trains daily. But there is a lot of uncertainty with this amazing new technology’s fu­ture in the U.S. as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is under review and development of UAV regulations for commercial use which are slated to be completed in 2015.

It was decided that the scaled distance formulas were not adequate to predict vibration when using non-electric detonators, as accurate wave propagation could not be achieved. The problem is how to manage of complex geology condition related with wave propagation in ground vibration control. This paper will discuss the Wight Pit wall slash at the Mount Polley open-pit copper-gold mine that scavenged a high grade block of ore from two double-benches of the pit wall. The Wight Pit orebody, discovered in 2003, is located in the Northeast of the property with the southeast pit wall approximately 50m (165ft) from the edge of Polley Lake. In early 2009, the Wight Pit was nearing completion while an estimated 150,000 tonnes (165,000 tons) of ore averaging a grade of 1.4% copper remained just inside the southeast pit wall. The ore block started 24m (78ft) above the pit floor and extended up another 48m (157ft) with a 70o plane defining the back of the block.

This paper reports a simple approach to model the waveform change due to travel distances based on the field measurement. A linear interpolation is used to estimate the waveform at a distance from two vibration waveforms recorded at two different distances. The resulted waveforms are compared with actual recorded waveforms at the point in both time and frequency domains. It shows that the proposed method to estimate the waveform change yield reliable results. The advantages of the proposed method are that it does not require assumptions that a transfer function does and that it is based on purely the measured waveforms that are encoded with in-situ rock properties. The method could be more reliable for far field seismic waveforms and could be an approximation for near field waveform estimation.

"Efficiency of blast operations depends on fragmentation, overbreak, muckpile profile anddisplacement, vibration, airblast, flyrock and damage to wall or slope stability. To provide all these conditions at the optimal level, determination of rock mass properties (in-situ block size, joint spacing and orientation) is the very first step during design stage of rock blasting. Image analysis software is used not only to determine the fragmentation level of muckpile but also to characterize the bench face. In this study, an image analysis software was used to determine apparent block size of bench face and to measure blast fragmentation of muckpile. The source of errors and the vital points to be taken into consideration were explained for bench face characterization andfragmentation measurement. Since it provides much better results than previous techniques and it is not intrusive to production process, image analysis technique is considered as one of the most efficient and preferred way for fragmentation analysis. Besides these advantages, there are some weak points of image analysis software. Lighting is one of the most important factors for photographs captured for in-situ block size analysis and fragmentation analysis. Lighting determines shadow formation. In an ideal image, particles are clearly delineated by soft shadows. If shadows are too strong (dark), analysis suffers. Appropriate scale should be replaced onto blast muckpile during site measurements. The location of the scale in image affects the results of analysis. Also, the densityand orientation of discontinuities should be considered during application of image analysis technique to characterize bench faces. In this study, image analysis software was applied in thesandstone, limestone quarries of Istanbul region and an open pit boron mine. All image analysis, evaluations and results were made based on the site measurements."

Since the introduction of the Explosives Track & Trace in Europe in 2014 for manufacturers and 2015 for end-users, a lot has changed in all areas of the supply chain and the use of explosives. The regional associations, manufacturers' organizations, and trade associations have proven that it is possible to overcome a hurdle, that looks almost impossible in the beginning, through consistent cooperation. The paper gives an insight into the problems involved in introducing such a requirement, identifies ways and solutions, and concludes them. When looking at the current situation, the paper describes the process by which a prescribed change in business processes are transforming into a solution that increases productivity, security, and handling.
