Variability of the quality of phosphate ore feed to the flotation plant has been of great concern for the industry. This variability sometimes resulted in 10% to 50% decrease of P2O5 recovery, a reduction of P2O5 concentrate grade and/or both due to depression of the system. For this investigation, samples of refractory ore and easy-to-float ore were obtained from the same mining area in Central Florida; and then submitted to bench flotation tests using fatty acids (FA). To understand the cause of difference in flotation behavior of these apparently similar ores (grade, mineralogy, and physical appearance), bulk and surface characterization studies were conducted. Based on the results of characterization studies and bench flotation tests on both refractory and easy-to-float samples, it was possible to determine FA surface coverage. It was found that the surface coverage for the refractory ore was between 6.9% and 9.8%, corresponding to 0% and 80% recovery, respectively; whereas the easy-to-float ore showed surface coverage of 17.2% (89% recovery) to 24.6% (98% recovery). Since size analysis, surface area and pore size measurements showed small differences, it was thought that the surface coverage differences could be caused by the ad-sorption of natural compounds onto the phosphate ore surfaces, depressing the system. SEM, EDS, and Leaching and Solvent Extraction (LSX) studies were performed on the phosphate ores to demonstrate the proposed mechanism. This paper summarized our characterization studies, flotation results, and findings. The study showed that the new identified compounds were responsible for the flotation behaviors of the Florida refractory phosphate ores.

Water-sealed cyclone is a new efficient equipment to use for grading,concentrating of slurry, it was researched and developed by the Kunming Metallurgy Research Institute in the 1980s , and ac-cessed to the 1990 national invention award and the national patent products (ZL02245313.X ). The equipment and technology are innovative, firstly, we design a set of micro-pressure (0.005~0.008MPa) water-sealed device, which eliminates the gas phase of three-phase of sol-id-liquid-gas of the traditional general hydrocyclone grading process, it only has solid and liquid phases. Secondly, the axial velocity envelope surface which is a factor of controlling the accuracy of grading changes to a wedge rotation; and the interface of upward flow to down flow changes from surface to the solid, it can improve grading accuracy. Thirdly, water-sealed box and catheter devices make the stilling which pass through the cyclone cone centrifugal force fields re-enter the pressure grading zone of catheter. The three innovations make water-sealed cyclone can reduce the loss of overflow and has less mud in stilling product. Because the excellent performance, the water-sealed cyclone has application in non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, non-metallic and aluminum hydroxide industries for grading, desliming and concentrating since it has successfully developed.

Diaojuntai Concentrator adopts a process of low intensity and high intensity magnetic separation and anionic reverse flotation, with all the concentrate from magnetic separation being treated by re-verse flotation to obtain a qualified final concentrate. The high reagent cost and energy consumption of the reverse flotation have led to a high concentrate cost. The test research on reducing the feed to the reverse flotation was therefore carried out. Based on the study of the properties of the ore sample, the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation was screened at 0.076 mm and the undersize fraction was concentrated by concentrator with gravity and magnetic field. The results show that a qualified concentrate can be obtained at various rising current rate, pulsating current and power-on style, with the operation rate over 85%. The extraction of some part of qualified concentrate from the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation by magnetic separation can reduce the feed to the reverse flotation by about 35% so as to reduce the production cost of concentrate.

Commercially available flotation technologies for recovery of mineral fines have remained essentially unchanged for several decades. Recent studies have focused simply on improving mechanical and open column cells. Such studies have explored different control strategies and have aimed to improve reagent selectivity, fine air bubble generation and particle-air contact. However, no study has questioned whether current techniques are the most efficient technology for recovering mineral fines. Given that both mechanical and open column cells have a widely accepted carrying capacity limitation, the lack of extensive research into an alternative technology is surprising. Most recently, open column flotation has become an entrenched technology, and it is undermining the efficient recovery of mineral fines worldwide. An alternative exists. Packed column flotation overcomes the above-stated problems as the technology surpasses the carrying capacity limitation of current means by several-fold and almost always achieves the best performance in many comparative pilot tests and full-scale plant operations. Filling a column with packing plates creates a network of sloped walls capable of supporting a froth bed many times deeper than conventional machines. Having froth up to 75 percent of the total column volume tolerates all feed changes encountered in the plant environment and permits maximum flexibility in concentrate quality control. Furthermore, its scale-up is straightforward by increasing column volume or the number of interconnected small cells. As the air breaks upon rising and is distributed horizontally through packing plates, the air spargers can be replaced with a simple blower, resulting in considerable savings in operation and maintenance costs. Packed flotation technology provides a break-through solution for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. Its simplicity, superior performance, and low cost structure make it an appealing alternative to current technologies and allow greater flexibility in downstream processing. Future industrial applications include a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic ores. This paper focuses on some recent scale-up campaigns for nickel and copper sulphide flotation applications compared directly to conventional equipment.

The Mount Isa copper concentrator started operation in 1973. Its secondary grinding circuit consisted of two 5 meters diameter ball mills in closed circuit with 505 mm cyclones. At the design throughput of 800 t/h, the 80% passing size of the circuit product (P80) was about 140 µm. The then Mount Isa Mines Limited (?MIM?) installed two autogenous grinding (?AG?) mills in 1991 to replace two stages of crushing, a rod milling stage and one primary ball milling stage. One of the AG mills was later converted to semi-autogenous grinding (?SAG?) operation by the addition of a steel grinding medium to achieve the designed plant throughput of 800 t/h. The cyclone over-flow P80of the secondary ball mill circuit was reduced to 120 µm by the increased operating power in the AG/SAG mill circuits. The two secondary balls mills had a grinding power of 5.2 MW. A mineralogical study of the milled products indicated that half of this grinding power was sufficient for adequate chalcopyrite liberation. Eliminating one of the secondary ball mills could reduce energy and operating costs by more than A$2 million dollars per year. An optimisation project team was established to achieve the predicted power saving. Grinding circuit simulations were conducted for different circuit configurations. Ball mill parameters such as ball size, ball charge and feed slurry density were optimised. Cyclone body diameter, spigot and vortex finder sizes, and cyclone types were tested. The secondary ball mill circuit was redesigned and several proposed circuits were run as trial production campaigns to determine their operability and efficiency. The plant trials confirmed that one of the secondary ball mills could be decommissioned. Significant cost savings were achieved as a result. The success of the project demonstrates optimising grinding circuits can not only deliver the plant performance, but also a much lower unit operating cost through energy and maintenance savings.

With rapid development of Chinese iron & steel industry, it is of significance to intensify the utilization of domestic complex iron ore resources. The tin, zinc-bearing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones because of the complicated intergrowth relations among the multi-elements, and they have not been efficiently utilized, presently. Based on the thermodynamic analysis of iron, tin and zinc oxides reduction by CO, the technological conditions of tin and zinc recovery and pellets preparation from tin, zinc-containing iron concentrates by selective reduction roasting are studied and a new comprehensive utilization process is developed in this investigation. Under the optimum conditions, the tin and zinc volatilization is respectively in excess of 80% and 70%, and the compression strength of roasted pellet is more than 2500 N/P. Moreover, the residual tin and zinc in the finished pellets is below 0.06%. The finished pellets can be used as high quality iron-making burdens for large-scale blast furnace.

Basing on character of fine ores, and employing all the advantage of dissolved-air flotation, the study within the dissertation put forth the methods of superfine metal mineral flotation with dissolved-air flotation equipment, and constructed a full set of laboratory flotation system. Experiments both in water and in slurry were respectively carried out by means of this flotation equipment. Further study was also fulfilled on mechanism of air-dissolved released devices, and the key components of system including ejector, releaser and saturator were designed. Optimizing devices parameters were chosen by taking ideal performance of the devices into consideration, according to orthogonal experiments and tests on bubbles factors, those performance factors were called air release rate, air release efficiency. The results with some minerals are better than JJF flotation machine with 30 litres bulk. The Dissolved-air Flotation(DAF) machine shows great potentiality in treating super-fine metal mineral concentration. The research indicates the Dissolved-air Flotation(DAF) system has superiority over mechanical flotation machine in fine flotation. Air-dissolved released bubbles appear on the surface of hydrophobic minerals in priority, solving collision probability less in the tradition fine mineral separation, such that the metallurgy technology of fine metallic minerals are improved. The exploratory research is a foundation for industrial pilot, commercial test and equipment maturity in the future.

Today, most requests for quotations force all bidders to follow the bid document to the letter. The choice is then made based on price since it is the only difference in technically identical offers. However, clients allow and even encourage suppliers to come up with alternatives. Overall economy again, is much more than low investment costs. Operation costs may affect the economy of a project far more than a million saved in investment. There is almost always the choice: Should we go for the cheapest solution or should we go for the most economical solution? We strongly recommend the study of the long-term effects on investments as they often surpass any apparent savings in capital expenditure. With high operating costs, time is never on our side. Almost all relevant inputs and outputs in a concentrator have a value that can be expressed in a suitable currency. Unit prices may differ substantially from one operation to the other, but everything has a price tag and globalization has made it possible to move both goods and services to almost any place in the world. Even a rather simple exercise can give a good indication on which process improvements are worth pursuing when investing in new systems or equipment. The ones that do not qualify, as money earners, will naturally appear as clearly. No ?rocket science? is required, just process knowledge, practical experience, an open mind and some common sense and the reward may be the difference of having a good or an excellent project. The model we have developed can be made as detailed as required, but we do not recommend too much detail, as it sometimes tends to distract work and obscure the important issues. Two different process solutions compared in a simplified example illustrate the importance of evaluating a project based on its long-term effects rather than focusing on the investment costs only.

Calcium carbonate/Titanium dioxide composite, characterized by coating TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles, is an important substitute for titanium dioxide. This paper studies preparation method of CaCO3/TiO2 ,composites based on mechano-chemical effects, measures its properties as a pigment, analyzes the binding form and interface reaction mechanism between CaCO3 and TiO2. Through single finely grinding of CaCO3, co-grinding of CaCO3 together with TiO2, and mecha-no-chemical effects produced in the course of grinding, CaCO3/TiO2 composites can be prepared successfully. Results indicate that grinding fineness of CaCO3, co-grinding time of CaCO3 and TiO2, the weight ratio of grinding media to mineral feeding, and the amount of TiO2 have much influence on the properties of CaCO3/TiO2 composites. CaCO3/TiO2 composites have the properties same as titanium dioxide pigment, oil adsorption and ultraviolet adsorption same as TiO2, and 90% of hiding power as that of TiO2. Wet grinding of CaCO3 causes the production of mechano-chemical effect and hydroxyl group, through which CaCO3 and TiO2 can be bonded together. Repulsion occurs between the particles of CaCO3 and the particles of TiO2, respectively, they are both in good dispersion. But attraction occurs between CaCO3 and TiO2. TiO2 particles are distributed evenly on the surface of CaCO3. Therefore, coating of TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles and chemical bond between them make CaCO3/TiO2 compo-sites have pigment properties of Titanium.

Considerable attention has been, and is being, given to the physics of water-films associated with bubble interactions at surfaces. In contrast, little information on the chemistry of such films has been reported. This communication reports a method using sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) to describe hydrogen bonding of interfacial water molecules in water films created with bubbles at hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The SFVS spectra of water films at hydrophilic silica surfaces differ significantly from the spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface. The SFVS spectra indicate that a very ordered water structure exists in water films at the hydrophilic silica surface during contact with a bubble and that the extent of hydrogen bonding increases with an increase in contact pressure. Such structural considerations as well as repulsive electrostatic and Van der Waals forces account for film stability for a bubble at the hydrophilic silica surface. In contrast, the SFVS spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface show a lack of hydrogen bonding and are characterized by a distinct absorption at about 3700 cm-1 similar to the spectrum of the air/water interface. These results suggest the presence of a water void, or water exclusion zone, at the hydrophobic surface, as supported by X-ray reflectivity measurements reported in the literature, by atomic force microscopy, and by the results from molecular dynamics simulations. Of course the water film at the hydrophobic surface is unstable with film thinning and rupture upon bubble contact. Under these circumstances it is shown that an attractive Van der Waals force between the bubble and the hydrophobic surface can be expected when the water exclusion zone is taken into consideration. As the thickness of the water exclusion zone increases to a thickness corresponding to the size of nano bubbles, the calculated attractive Van der Waals force increases. The compound material of Nano-TiO2 Supported on the diatomite was prepared by the hydrolytic method with purified diatomite and TiCl4. The compound material was characterized by SEM, XRD, TEM, EDX, XPS, and the application test of the compound material was studied. The characterization test results showed that the Nano-TiO2 was coated on the surface of diatomite, the crystal of TiO2 is anatase, and the average crystal size is 12 nm. The pore diameter was reduced, but pore volume and surface area of the compound material are increased after Nano-TiO2 Supported on the diatomite. The application test results for treating coking waste water and formaldehyde gas show that the compound material of Nano-TiO2 / diatomite has adsorption and photo-catalytic function and strong degradation performance for phenol and formaldehyde.

HermesTM metal magnetic liner (MML) has been invented and manufactured by China Metallurgy and Mining General Co. (CMMC). This paper describes its mechanism, structure, magnetic field distribution, application, economic benefit and safety performance. The 10 years? service life in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Mine, along with 6 years? technological analysis on its application in 5500mm×8800mm (diameter × length) ball mill in Anshan Steel?s Diaojuntai mineral processing plant, has proved its advantages such as super reliability, long service life, light weight, thin thickness, low noise and short payback period. It has also demonstrated its positive effects on the grinding process such as high productivity, energy-effective performance and low consumption of grinding media. It reduces labour intensity and improves working conditions, due to its easy installation, free maintenance and the fact that it doesn?t require fastening bolts or cause slurry leakage. It is de-signed scientifically in accordance with the varieties of processing lines, mill specification, ore type and grinding media, and has been applied in different grinding processes for magnetite, hematite, gold ores, nonferrous ores and other materials. HermesTM MML has three types of products: General, Composite and Heavy-duty. They are designed to meet the requirements from customers in China and abroad. So far, more than 400 sets of MML have been applied in ball mills with diameter rang-ing from 1500mm to 5500mm. It has become highly popular in American market recently due to its safe and effective performance.

Gold deposits in South Africa are invariably associated with uranium bearing minerals. Although it is low grade uranium by international standards, averaging around 0.3 kg U3O8 per ton of ore, recovery of uranium as a by-product improves the overall economics of gold extraction. Moreover, the current high uranium prices as well as increased demand due to renewed interest in nuclear power provide significant incentives for dedicated uranium production. An understanding of the uranium leaching response to changes in operating conditions is an important first step to-wards optimisation of uranium recoveries. In South African acid leaching plants, uranium dissolutions higher than 90% are difficult to achieve, and the chemical origin of this limit is not clear. To study leaching behaviour, an important consideration is the mineralogical characteristics of the ores. Typically, a diagnostic leaching approach can be followed. In this paper, a mineralogy-leachability explanation is presented to rationalise the difficulty in exceeding 90% dissolution from low grade uranium ores on the basis of a simple diagnostic leaching method. It was found that brannerite was the main reason for the existence of a dissolution limit in Witwatersrand ore and that chemical liberation was more effective to increase end dissolution compared to physical liberation. The findings from these investigations will form guidelines for developing economically viable flow sheets for improved uranium recovery, at least in a South African (Witwatersrand) context.

There are many measuring methods of grain sizes. Taking into consideration the fine grained materials, one of the existing techniques is measurement of grain size by the Coulter Counter method. This method is based on the measuring the changes of electrolyte resistance during grains flow through the calibrated diaphragm. This method is relatively simple to apply, significantly precise and the results are given quickly. However, the problem is that the measurements are limited by the size of diaphragm. Because of this situation, measurement of grain sizes by this instrument is possible in range from 10% to 60% of diaphragm diameter. This limitation causes the necessity of re-placing diaphragm in case when the measured grain size distribution concerns the material of large size range. In purpose of determining the total grain size distribution, the synthesis of some partial distributions, given for individual grain fractions (with different diaphragm applied), is required. This is possible to do by calculating the mixture of distribution functions, created from the partial distribution functions. Two materials were selected to research: quartzite and glass, which were comminuted in cylindrical crusher, additionally grinded, screened and then analyzed by Coulter Counter for five grain fractions: 0~125 µm, 0~80 µm, 0~56 µm, 0~40 µm and 0~25 µm. For each fraction, five different partial distributions were given (in case of glass ? four), which are the basis for the creating the joined grain composition. To assure the adequacy of the given distribution function, it is necessary to obtain the possibly best approximation of partial distributions. In the work, both the parametric and non-parametric methods of density approximations of investigated random variable. For each grain fraction the approximations were done by three traditional distribution functions: RRB, GSA and log-norm distribution functions and three methods of non-parametric approximation: Gauss kernel, Epanechnikov kernel and orthogonal Fourier series method. A processing scheme is presented to use one single chemical that has multiple functions to re-duce the use of chemicals and achieve more efficient mineral flotation and solids dewatering. Sti mulisensitive polymers which display hydrophilic/hydrophobic transitions in response to changes in temperature or pH have been found to be useful as such multiple function reagents. They can cause the mineral particles to be either hydrophilic or hydrophobic at one stimuli condition and the opposite at the reverse stimuli condition. Therefore, both particle surface wettability and inter-particle interaction forces are reversibly controllable. When the surface is hydrophilic, particle dispersion is achieved by repulsive inter-particle forces whereas when the surface is hydrophobic, particle aggregation is induced by inter-particle hydrophobic attractive forces. In addition, the hydrophobic surface condition allows for the attachment of particles to bubbles. Flotation and solid settling tests have been conducted with a silica suspension treated with the temperature-sensitive polymer poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM). The results indicated that PNIPAM can be used to induce a transition between hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface character at temperature lower or higher than its critical solution temperature (CST around 32oC). Thus, both effective silica dispersion or hydrophobic aggregation and flotation without adding any additional collector have been demonstrated. In tailings treatment, rapid silica settling was obtained with hydrophobic aggregation at temperature above the CST and further sediment consolidation (and water release) occurred at temperature below the CST. Contact angle measurements confirmed the hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition induced by PNIPAM.

Research at Cytec over the past two decades has shown that the traditional approach for ore metallurgical characterization (typically conducted via laboratory-scale batch flotation tests), which involves changing reagents and conditions one-factor-at-a-time, leads to several pitfalls. The chemical solution thus selected has a narrow un-optimized window of performance and will likely fail in the plant. A holistic approach, called the Flotation Matrix 100? process for ore metallurgical characterization, was developed at Cytec about a decade ago and has been successfully used to develop robust reagent solutions for several operations around the world. The premise for the approach is that flotation outcome from ores is variable and is determined by complex interactions between various physical, chemical and operational factors. A key component of the process is the use of efficient multivariate designs focused on the chemistry aspects (reagents and pulp chemistry), which helps identify the best processing conditions for each ore type, as well as the conditions resulting in poor performance. It also includes advanced statistical methods for dealing with the complexity and variability of experimental data. The holistic approach is illustrated in this paper with a case study on Pb/Zn ores. Using just 18 carefully designed batch tests, it is possible to partially simulate the behavior of each ore type in the plant. The best conditions for each ore type, along with the conditions to avoid, are identified. Along with this, insights are obtained into the reasons for high reagent dosages for certain ore types, and interactions between variables. Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving (boiling in NaOH) biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium. For Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by using batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed, effect of temperature and contact time on biosorption efficiency were studied. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacity and adsorption yield of one metal ion were reduced by the presence of the other metal ion. In the experiments the optimum pH value was found out 6.0. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Frundlich adsorption models. The highest metals uptake was calculated for Zn (II) and Pb (II) were 57 and 87 respectively. desorption of heavy metal ions was performed by 50 mM HNO3 solution. The results indicated that the biomass of p.chrysosporium is a suitable biosorbent for removing heavy metals ion from aqueous solution.

Extensive literature exists on the motion of single bubbles and the behaviour of swarms of bubbles. This contribution describes work to track and reveal the motion of individual bubbles in a swarm. The technique is based on high speed cinematography and tracking of multiple moving objects. Image processing algorithms were implemented in Matlab to isolate and measure geometric proper-ties of the bubbles in image sequences recorded at 2 ms interval; and these properties were compiled into a data structure. To track a bubble, the geometric properties and a matching criterion were applied on consecutive pictures to identify the bubble. The bubble trajectory was reconstructed from the data structure for the matched objects. The methodology is briefly described. The new technique was tested for bubbles produced at slot-type spargers (i.e., approximately 2-D swarms) in the presence of two frother types ('strong' and 'weak'). Two observations are discussed: a) that bubble motion in a swarm describes a velocity-size relationship dictated by the dominant bubble size class; and b) that surfactant type influences bubble rise velocity for bubbles in the range 0.1 mm to 4 mm. The latter suggests surface viscosity rather than surface immobilization determines bubble rise velocity.

Mechanism of BK501 in desiliconization from bauxite was studied by use of flotation test, EDS, ?-potential, FTIR. Results of flotation show that almost all of diaspore can be depressed when BK501 is put into pulp ranging from pH 4~12, in the meanwhile kaolinite is slightly activated. In the light of surface analyses, it is concluded that the adsorption of reagent on the diaspore is dominant by chemical interaction. Moreover, kaolinite may float more by addition of BK501 because of flocculation.

In this study, a montmorillonite organo-intercalation compound (MOIC) was synthesized by using a Na-modified bentonite (NaB) as a matrix and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) bromide as an intercalating reagent under microwave irradiation. The synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), organic carbon content measurement, and adsorption density determination. The results show that, at 10% suspension concentration and 10 minutes irradiation in a 130-W microwave oven, the basal spacing d(001) of the synthesized MOIC increases to 2.209 nm from the original 1.218 nm of NaB. The MOIC has much higher adsorptive densities to nitrobenzene and aniline from aqueous solution than the NaB. The adsorption isotherm of nitrobenzene on the MOIC is linear, and the adsorption is mainly the result of nitrobenzene?s preferred partition in MOIC over aqueous solution due to MOIC?s hydrophobicity. The adsorption isotherm of aniline on MOIC follows the Freundlich equation and the increased adsorption is not only the result of aniline?s preferred partition in MOIC over aqueous solution but also that of the MOIC?s surface adsorptions.
