"Various kinds of civil engineering structures and facilities were seriously damaged in the earthquake in Tohoku and Kanto regions of Japan on 11 March 2011 due to the greatness of its magnitude. In contrast, many structures resisted the large seismic force having been reinforced by the CDM (Cement Deep Mixing) method, which is often used for increasing the bearing capacity of ground and improving seismic performance. This paper summarizes the field survey undertaken to investigate damage to structures and facilities reinforced by the CDM method. Several prefectures and metropolitan areas were selected for the survey, based on the occurrence of strong seismic motions. A total of 847 structures and facilities were studied, in the survey using a questionnaire, which mainly inquired about the appearance of structures and facilities. Of the respondents to the questionnaire, 789 replied that there were no seriously damaged structures. The paper presents the damaged and non-damaged sites of CDM-technique sites and non-CDM-techniques sites. It can be concluded from the field survey that the CDM Method demonstrates high efficacy and durability against a strong seismic motions.INTRODUCTIONDuring the afternoon of 11 March, 2011, a huge magnitude-9.0 Mw (Category 9.0 on the Richter scale) earthquake occurred about 25 kilometers below the Pacific Ocean’s surface off the coast of Tohoku. This massive earthquake, now called the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake was the largest earthquake ever observed in Japan. The seismic intensity of this earthquake was measured 7, the maximum on the Japanese intensity scale, as observed 7 in northern Miyagi Prefecture. The earthquake caused severe damage over a wide area from Tohoku to Kanto, and triggered large tsunamis that struck the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Kanto. The number of missing and fatalities caused by this earthquake exceeded 18,000 persons, making this an unparalleled earthquake disaster with a cost-in-life toll not experienced by Japan in recent years. Because of the scale of its seismic motions, the earthquake damaged facilities and structures of many kinds. In the years prior to this earthquake, the CDM method was used extensively to increase the bearing capacity of the ground as an anti-seismic countermeasure and to prevent liquefaction. Immediately after the earthquake, the CDM Association visually surveyed the state of damage to about 800 facilities in the Tohoku and Kanto regions where a seismic intensity of 5 or higher was observed. This report summarizes the survey of damage to facilities and structures constructed applying the CDM method in order to confirm the durability and performance of the method against seismic motions."

The design of pile foundations is much more commonly verified by means of a full-scale test, than is the design of other foundation units. The reason is not that our knowledge of pile behavior is more uncertain than our knowledge of other foundation types making the verification necessary, but more that the loads in a structure are more concentrated to single foundations in a structure founded on piles as opposed to structures on footings or mats. Therefore, should a pile cap fail or move, the adverse consequence of this is often drastic, as the piled structure has little freedom to transfer its need for support to other foundation units. Consequently, it becomes important to assure the design of piled foundations. In many, maybe in most instances, the static pile loading test is routine and geared toward determining an at least capacity, only. However, in these times there is an ever increasing liability of the professional, demands for increased economy of the foundation, and frequent lack of the involvement in the test of the experienced old-timer exercising good judgment. Furthermore, modern pile design is leaving the single, simple concept of capacity and requires more information from the test to assist in determining aspects of long-term behavior and settlement. Therefore, even the straight forward, routine static loading test requires improved planning, execution, and analysis.

"The Virginia Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering to construct the Craney Island Eastward Expansion (CIEE) to meet the dual purpose of extending the life of Craney Island as a dredged material management area and providing land for a state-of-the-art marine terminal. The over 500-acre (200-hectare) expansion provides additional upland dredged material capacity for the Hampton Roads Harbor by constructing perimeter dikes, that once filled, will provide land for the development of a container terminal. In the winter of 2010/2011 the first stage of sand fill was placed, followed by the installation of approximately 12 million linear feet (MLF) (3.6 million linear meters, MLM) of marine PVDs. With over 36 MLF (10.9 MLM) of PVD required to complete dike construction the project will be one of the largest PVD installation project in the U.S.This paper details the challenges associated with the construction of the cross dikes, in particular the design, testing, installation and monitoring of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) installed overwater to depths of over 130 feet (40 meters) for foundation improvement in the insitu very soft Norfolk Clay. With expected settlements of 20–30 ft (7-10 m) and 30 percent average strains, the discharge capacity of the PVDs was of particular concern. Laboratory data is presented showing the magnitudes and variability of discharge capacity under different confining pressures in both a straight and buckled condition.The method of installation and monitoring of the marine PVDs in open water included developing a specialized barge and sophisticated positioning and data collection system to verify installation location, depth of penetration and track quantities. An observational method, including material testing, detailed surveys, periodic in-situ testing, and instrumentation, was utilized by the project team to assess the project’s progress and allow for validation of consolidation and strength gain rates and magnitudes."

"With cities’ development, underground space exploitation presents a need for bigger and deeper constructions now. Technical problems founded during the construction of deep foundation pit support become more and more important. The supporting system has to cut or partly cut off hydraulic connection outside and inside the foundation pit, control the ground settlement caused by dewatering and make sure safety of foundation pit and its surroundings. Some preliminary study and application of ultra-deep soil reinforcement methods have been conducted in Shanghai’s deep excavation engineering. On the basis of engineering practice of ultra-deep foundation pit in Shanghai, some field and laboratory test, this paper analyzes effects of different ultra-deep soil reinforcement methods and their influence characteristics of surrounding environment. It also summarizes these methods’ sealing effect, construction and economic efficiency and concludes their characteristicsINSTRUCTIONShanghai is formed from marine sedimentation. In Shanghai, from earth’s surface to 30~40m underground, soil is mainly consist of soft clay with 40% moisture content. There are also many thin silty-sand layers in the earth, so the soil is both soft and permeable. Under 40m, soil is mainly thick silty-sand layers and fine-sand layers with medium density and confined groundwater whose water head is about 7m high.With the rapid development of Shanghai’s municipal construction and high-rise buildings in the recently ten years, the number of underground structure including subway station, tunnel and high-rise building basement are constructed rapidly. Due to the permeability and softness of Shanghai’s soil, it is necessary to reinforce soil to make sure the safety and high construction rate of engineering project in Shanghai.Because of deeper excavation depth and bigger excavation area in Shanghai, ultra-deep soil reinforcement is used preliminarily in Shanghai. Combining with engineering practice of ultra-deep foundation pit in Shanghai and employing field and laboratory test, this paper analyzes effectiveness of different ultra-deep soil reinforcement methods and concludes these methods’ characteristics and their applicability. All this can guide further application of these methods."

The general history of piling is traced up to the present time with regard to the evolution of methods and materials. The processes have been strongly influenced by developments in basic equipment and industrial change. It is noticeable that in the twentieth century more progress has taken place than in the many previous centuries. It has been strongly influenced by the general development of Soil Mechanics. Test loading is probably the most effective way to assess the success of designs and many empirical relationships have been challenged through it. As we approach a new century it appears that it will be an age of rapid equipment development, with much enhancement of understanding of what has been done. Processes of automatic construction and testing will becoming commonplace. These changes will narrow the limits of conventional scatter that have come to be accepted and to a large extent will be driven by political efforts to curtail energy consumption, to raise standards of quality and reliability, and to conserve the environment. 1. Ancient history. Piling is an ancient art. Its first mention in history is from Herodotus, the first person to commit an account of his times to the written word in the years 557 to 479 BC. He evidently had a strong interest in engineering matters because he wrote of building, brick making, reinforced brickwork, river training, canal building, bridge construction, tunnelling and its acoustic detection and piling. The piling reference comes from Book 5 at paragraph 16.

"Discussed is the use of wet Deep Soil Mixing, generally executed with single mixing tools 0.8 to 1.6m in diameter, employed in the foundation of viaduct supports. The applications involve economical patterns of ground improvement, covering in average about 40% of the foundation area or less, which contribute to the competitiveness of DSM solutions when compared to traditional piling. The focus is on selected aspects of the geotechnical design, applicable for geo-composite systems in which the interaction between the stabilised and the native soil should also be considered. Evaluation of settlement can be carried out with simplified methods, accounting for punching effects, or with more advanced FE models in case foundation tilt or differential settlements become important. Potential bending of DSM columns should be considered when evaluating column stresses, especially when dealing with deep deposits of soft soil and/or foundations loaded with overturning moments and/or high horizontal forces. Statistical evaluation of UCS data using lognormal distribution is recommended, and a new classification system for DSM application is proposed. Field investigations and monitoring data from completed projects are also presented.INTRODUCTIONThe first applications of wet Deep Soil Mixing in foundation of road viaducts constructed across and along the newly built A2-highway in Poland took place in 2002. Following detailed analyses, it was concluded that 39 viaducts, originally designed to rest upon large diameter piles in order to reduce excessive settlement of individual supports, could also be founded directly on the ground improved with DSM columns, fulfilling all relevant requirements of serviceability and ultimate limit states (SLS and ULS, respectively). It was also noticed that shorter construction times and lower costs of ground improvement with DSM contributed to substantial economical savings as compared to classical piling. Since then, more than 250 road and railway viaducts have been successfully founded on DSM treated ground in Poland, and wet soil mixing is now seen as a reliable and widely accepted technology for this purpose. These applications, together with a parallel use of wet DSM for foundation of buildings, industrial halls and wind turbines, have drawn international attention to the state of practice of wet DSM in Poland for foundation of engineering objects. What follows is an attempt to summarise experience gained during planning and execution of DSM works for foundation of the majority of road and railway viaducts constructed in the last 13 years, with emphasis on selected design aspects and evaluation of collected data and observed performance.The design process of DSM treatment is iterative, as described e.g. in Annex B of EN 14679, and typically involves two main steps, i.e., the selection of the design strength of cemented soil, called soil-mix design, and the adoption of suitable column pattern, referred to as geotechnical design. Soil-mix design was initially based on purposely arranged simple laboratory tests, involving mixing of soil specimen with different cement types and dosages and subsequent strength testing. However, with a growing number of completed projects the accumulated field strength data of different stabilised soils have been more and more frequently used, reducing the need for preceding laboratory testing of soil-mix to special projects only. Information on cement factors utilised in Poland and the range of recommended compressive strengths for different stabilised soils, as well as on mixing tools and characteristics of the wet method applied, can be found in Topolnicki (2008). Consequently, soil-mix design is not further discussed herein. Selected aspects of the geotechnical design are the main focus."

"INTRODUCTIONNo. 1 Queens Rd was an existing 10-storey office building founded on large pad footings. This project involved the construction of a 6-level, 15m (50-ft.) deep basement excavated immediately adjacent to the existing building and also beneath the existing footprint of the Southern end of the building. The total perimeter of the new basement was to be approximately 200m (656 ft.) all with a retained height of 15m (50 ft.). It was also proposed to add a further 5 storeys to the building. Approximately 18 of the existing columns supporting the 10-storey building were to have the applied column load diverted from the existing foundations at ground level onto the new piles or basement raft 15m (50 ft.) below.The geotechnical profile consisted of fill for the top 1.5m predominately comprising of clayey sand with a high gravel content from 1.5m to 9m (5 to 30 ft.), a medium dense to dense clayey sand and then below was a sandy clay extending to 15m (50 ft.) ranging from stiff to very stiff. From 15m on completely to extremely weathered siltstone was encountered. The groundwater was measured at 9.5m (31 ft.) below the natural ground surface.DESIGN BRIEFThe existing building columns were founded on large pad foundations up to 4.4m (14.5 ft.) square, founded on the dense clayey sand. These pads would require temporary support to enable the excavation to proceed beneath them. Upon completion of the excavation under the pads new columns were to be constructed joining into the existing columns to transfer the load onto the new raft slab, 15m (50 ft.) below. The existing 10 floors were to be refurbished. It was planned to undertake all the temporary support and transferring of loads while the structure above was only able to provide a dead load. It was decided that any movement of the building would have minimum impact on a skeleton structure. During the temporary support of the columns, movements due to construction activities had to be monitored to understand any potential stresses in the structure above.The original design required beams to be installed under the pads and supported at either end by temporary piles that were to be founded below the level of the proposed excavation. (Refer to sketch 1). Wagstaff Piling considered that this methodology had difficulties in construction at all stages and did not provide facility for transfer of the load without significant movement of the structure above. Wagstaff Piling revised the design to attach beams to the columns above the pads using shear collars. (Refer to sketch 2). These beams supported on the temporary piles could then be jacked upwards to remove loads off the pads. This would enable removal of the pads with minimal movement of the 10-storey building above. "A 2 km section of the Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project is supported on improved ground consisting of cement deep soil mix (CDSM) panels because of highly variable and challenging soil conditions, especially the potential for seismic liquefaction-induced lateral spreading. CDSM was used as an alternative approach in place of driven piles for reducing the seismic lateral spreading displacements. An additional significant aspect of obtaining owner acceptance for CDSM was demonstrating that both seismic and non-seismic performance would equal or exceed that of using driven piles. It was recognized that, to demonstrate adherence to the seismic performance requirements, seismic design should be based on dynamic analyses (using FLAC) to estimate likely displacements and stresses/strains in the CDSM panels. One focus of the analyses was investigating the potential for cracking of the CDSM panels and the resulting displacements. This was simulated using the Ubiquitous-Joint and UBCSAND constitutive models.INTRODUCTIONThe Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project (ELRT) is an 11 km extension of the SkyTrain system through Burnaby, Coquitlam and Port Moody in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada (Figure 1). The ELRT project is being delivered through a Design/Build/Finance model by Evergreen Rapid Transit Construction (EGRT), an SNC-Lavalin Inc. company, to the Province of British Columbia (the Province).This paper discusses the ground improvement design for a 2 km section of the alignment through Port Moody, a historic city at the head of Burrard Inlet. The alignment is located in a right-of-way of restricted width with many pinch points close to residential and commercial properties, and directly adjacent to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline tracks. The ground slopes from south to north across the alignment towards Burrard Inlet at inclinations of up to about 6%. Design and construction of the Port Moody section was subcontracted to SNC-Lavalin Constructors (Western) Inc. (SLCW) and SNCLavalin/ Graham Construction Joint Venture (SGJV). Construction included single- and double-track slab guideways, pocket track (where up to four to six tracks were present), and Moody Centre Station."

The development of Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles started in the late 1940's when several projects were performed by Intrusion-Prepakt, Inc. utilizing various techniques to place the piling. On some projects, a grout pipe was placed down the augered hole after the auger was withdrawn, and structural grout was pumped into the hole until grout appeared at the surface, after which the grout pipe was withdrawn. In some instances coarse aggregate was placed after a grout pipe was in place, and then the grout was intruded into the coarse aggregate, making a pile using the preplaced concrete method. Another method of forming augered piles used a system of driving or drilling a grout pipe through soils adjacent to the auger once the auger was drilled to the bottom elevation. The tip of the grout pipe was placed in close proximity to the tip of the auger. As the auger was withdrawn, grout was pumped through the grout pipe filling the augered hole from the bottom. After grout was observed at the surface, the grout pipe was withdrawn. In 1951, a patent was applied for by Raymond Patterson describing the above techniques along with a technique for placement of grout using a hollow stem auger and a removable plug or lead bit at the tip of the auger. The expendable plug or lead bit was removed by using grout pressure. The patent was granted in 1956. Around this same time other augered piling con-tractors began operations under licensed arrangements.

Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load?deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.

"The Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) Method was developed and has been put to practical use on the initiative of the Public Works Research Institute and Japan Construction Method and Machinery Research Institute. This method is used to inject powdery binder with compressed air into soft ground while mixing the binder with the soil using the mixing blade to reduce the moisture content of the ground and cause chemical reactions between the soil and binder, thereby strengthening the ground and stabilizing its quality.Recently, there is a demand for high-quality, high-accuracy execution control.This paper introduces the New DJM Execution Control System, developed to meet the future demand for more sophisticated ground improvement, based on the past results of the conventional system in order to provide new automated execution control with improved accuracy, functionality and column quantity.1. INTRODUCTIONIn association with the densification of cities and the improvement of the social overhead capital, the underground space in urban areas is tangled with various underground structures including transportation facilities such as subways and underground roads, buried pipe such as water supply and sewerage systems,gas, electric power and communications lines, and underground malls.In addition, a lot of aboveground structures such as office and residential buildings, elevated tracks, expressways, embankment tracks are also supported with underground foundations.Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and many other large cities in Japan grow on plains spread along the coast or rivers. Waterfront flat areas which are very convenient for human activities, however, are often on the alluvial soft ground, where soft cohesive soil with a high moisture content, loose sandy soil, etc. are accumulated in a thick formation, with a high groundwater level.The DJM Method introduced here is used to decrease the moisture content of the soft ground, strengthen the ground and stabilize the soil quality by injecting powdery binder into the ground with compressed air, while mixing the binder with the soil using the mixing blade.2. This job was done in Morristown, NJ, with mono fluid system jet grouting for the construction of a new bank building. After the demolition of the existing two story structures, an excavation in loose sandy fill materials was necessary in order to reach the new structure basement level. Due to this jet grouting was selected as a medium to provide both excavation support and permanent underpinning, minimizing the adjacent building settlements. These two adjacent buildings were partially underpinned with a "gravity wall" made with 2 and 3 rows of secant vertical and inclined jet grout columns. Besides the classical jet grouting control methods, during the jet grouting execution, all the drilling and grouting parameters were recorded by a proprietary system called "Slogger". Additionally, after the jet grouting execution, an innovative result control technique was used by means of the application of the same parameter recording system. Some of the production columns were re-drilled and a comparison was made between the obtained drilling parameters and those obtained for the same age test columns. Under the referred existing conditions and in comparison with the conventional underpinning techniques, this project demonstrated that jet grouting, with proper execution and result control, can be faster than them and can maintain the building structural stability and act, at the same time, as a retention system minimizing the existing building settlements.

In a world of 2-dimensional design documents, envisioning and understanding 3-dimensional interferences for complex foundation construction scenarios can be challenging. Videos and computer models serve as 3-dimensional spatial aids but have drawbacks related to a fixed perspective. Augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) provide new tools to communicate design challenges and improve construction planning. This paper provides a practical look at the basics of AR/VR systems and the tools available to the foundation design and construction industry by giving a high-level example of the technologies’ use in the design and delivery phases of a complex micropile installation project for the remediation of a dam foundation. Using these technologies, GEI was able to design and deliver a complex foundation remediation solution. AR/VR benefited regulators, and the client, to help understand the design concept, construction sequencing, and approach to overcoming installation challenges. Due to its user-friendly nature and less rigorous programming and hardware requirements, AR proved to be more useful than VR for this scenario. AR/VR will likely not replace videos and computer models; however, it can be a useful 3-dimensional visualization aid that complements the project delivery process and offers benefits that traditional methods cannot. INTRODUCTION Augmented and virtual reality is a promising and rapidly developing technology within the engineering and construction world. Like any rapidly developing new technology, the language describing it can be confusing and dynamic. To eliminate the confusion some definitions must be made. AR/ VR definitions The definitions of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for the purposes of this paper are as follows: VR is a computer-generated immersive environment that the user experiences within a digital 3- dimensional space (Satava, 1993)AR is a composite view created by superimposing digital objects into the user’s real-world view (Azuma, 1997). Often, VR is used in an office environment and allows the user to “visit” the digital site to review site planning, construction sequences, and interference geometry. AR can be utilized in both the office and onsite environments. Like VR, the in-office application for AR is commonly site planning. AR also can be utilized in the field for applications such as seeing through the ground to locate known existing obstructions like utilities, gas tanks, etc.

There is increasing demand for geotechnical contractors to commit to carbon reduction, net zero or science based targets. A lot of focus has therefore been placed on using low carbon materials and low emission rigs. However, whilst these are ways to help reduce carbon, there is a need to look beyond just substituting materials and fuels to meet net zero. Using the IEMA carbon hierarchy, there is a need to first look at eliminating and reducing emissions, before considering substitute materials. For example, in geotechnical designs, this may mean considering using ground improvement or reducing the number of piles, before considering using low carbon cements. Equally, for remaining emissions, this hierarchy means considering carbon negative products to offset emissions, such as ground source heat pumps. This hierarchy can also be applied throughout geotechnical contractor organisations. For example, considering video conferencing for meetings, before considering public transport or using an electric vehicle. This article explores the carbon hierarchy and how it can be applied to all areas of a geotechnical contractor’s business. Only through embedding this hierarchy across the business can geotechnical contractors achieve the step change required to meet net zero.

This project has several tunnels and bridges with slopes that are protected with various types of protection system such rock bolting, rock anchors, and micro piles. For the main two bridges Bring number 2 and 3 at T49 A location Pavai - TeampT JV has to design and execute the circular group of micro piles (Fig.1) for deep excavation of earth for the purpose of construction of well foundations (CAISSON FOUNDATIONS) for both bridge 2 and 3 piers. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with composite rock bolt applications and permanent rock anchors for slope stabilization works in this project.

"In partnership with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and with support from International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC), Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) organized a workshop on quality assurance (QA) practices for acceptance of post-grouted drilled shafts in conjunction with DFI’s 40th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations. The 1½-day workshop was held on October 15-16, 2015 at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, CA.Post-grouting, in the context of this workshop and report, refers to the alternative design and construction of base-grouted drilled shafts wherein a grout distribution system is installed during construction and used to grout the base under pressure after the drilled shaft concrete has gained adequate strength, resulting in a stiffer axial-compression load-displacement relationship and additional possible ground improvement effects.The primary goals of the workshop were to•?Identify and summarize the state of the practice for design, construction, inspection, verification, acceptance criteria, reliability and performance of post-grouting.•?Identify gaps and needs in quality assurance that should be addressed for successful use of post-grouting.This report is structured to follow the workshop program: workshop presentations outlined the state of practice and views from owners, engineers and contractors on acceptance of post grouting methods for drilled shafts; and subsequent workshop discussions attended by a small invited group of participants focused on identifying areas of agreement and disagreement on post-grouting best practices, acceptance criteria, design and verification procedures, and inspection requirements. A partial list of attendees of the open and closed sessions is provided as Appendix A, and copies of presentations are included as Appendix B.FHWA and Caltrans are the primary audiences for this report, and its content will be used to develop a roadmap for deploying the findings into policy and practice. The secondary audience is the broader industry group, and the report content will be disseminated in a variety of formats."
