Introduction The recent uranium discovery at Theano point, lake Superior, is probably a rediscovery of the first reported Canadian uranium occurrence. A description of material from the original discovery was published in 1847 by J. L. LeConte, and many attempts have been made to relocate the deposit. Such attempts have in the past been unsuccessful because of vagueness in the original description of the locality. Besides being a prospect that seems to merit development work, the Camray discovery is important because it reaffirms the occurrence of pitchblende in the eastern part of the Precambrian shield. Much staking followed the announcement of the discovery, and some additional finds have been reported. Location The Camray discovery is at the shore of Theano point, lake Superior, about seventy miles north of Sault Ste. Marie (see Figure 1). It is in township 29, range XIV, district of Algoma. The showing is two miles from Highway No. 17, and is reached by a rough trail that leaves the highway at mileage 72.9 from Sault Ste. Marie. There are no towns of any size nearer than Sault Ste. Marie.

"More than 70% of potash is produced worldwide by froth flotation. Flotation of potash was developed in the early 1930s. Amines are widely used for flotation of sylvite (KCl) from halite (NaCl) and insoluble materials such as clays. Amine collector is also absorbed by clays. Therefore, clays are usually separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to flotation. Alternatively, slimes can be floated ahead of potash flotation. Flotation recoveries of sylvite are commonly in the range of 85%, while losses can occur in slimes, flotation tailings and make-up of process brine. Ores containing free coarse-grained sylvite are generally screened, whereas both fine and coarse fractions are conditioned and floated separately. The unique features of potash flotation include solubility of sylvite in water, the size of particles floated and fast kinetics. Particles up to 2.3 mm can be floated and about 50% of flotation feed can be removed in the rougher stage in few minutes. The main challenges in potash flotation are the recovery of potash from slimes, flotation efficiency in the presence of carnallite and recovery of coarse potash grains. A review of potash flotation shows that there is still room for improvement in both coarse and fine potash flotation. The present paper reviews the most significant flotation parameters including reagent type and dosage, flotation circuits, flotation equipment size and new developments in potash flotation. The latter include new reagents, flotation technologies (Hydrofloat, Jameson and column cells) larger flotation cells and slimes flotation.INTRODUCTION Potash is the common industrial term for potassium in various chemical combinations and minerals soluble in water. About 90% of potash produced worldwide is used as agricultural fertilizers. Flotation is the main treatment process of sylvinite (KCl-NaCl) ores for recovery of sylvite (KCl). Potash concentrate should contain a minimum of 95% KCl and be relatively free from 0.2 mm KCl fines. The flotation process for beneficiation of potash ores was developed in United States and Russia concurrently in the early 1930s. In 1934, Potash Corporation of America applied flotation process in a commercial scale (Tippin R.B. and Huiatt J.L). In the initial application, halite (NaCl) was selectively floated by employing lead chloride as an activator and soap as collector. The sylvite concentrate was reported in the cell underflow."

"SYNOPSISA discussion of the importance of flotation rate in the analysis of mineral flotation is presented. In particular, the highly interactive nature of the flotation ""system"" is emphasized where there are components of chemistry, equipment, and operating conditions simultaneously involved. It is further shown that: 1) flotation rate must be measured in order to economically optimize the performance of an industrial flotation circuit, 2) that consistent patterns exist in both flotation rate and equilibrium recovery when changing various settings of the system components, 3) that knowledge of these patterns is necessary in order to avoid making system changes that are either self-compensating or dramatically re-enforcing in some particular aspect of performance, and 4) the rate related role of the chemistry component (e.g.frothers and collectors) is often much bigger than is sometimes realized (especially in a negative sense involving overdosing of reagents). INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is widely usedl-6 in mineral beneficiation processes as a method for separating different types of finely divided solids present in a liquid (usually aqueous) suspension. The approach is based on the contacting of solids with upward moving air bubbles in an agitated vessel where the solids are exposed to chemicals (collectors) which create a condition favoring the attachment of a certain portion of the solids to the air bubbles. This selected portion is then removed in a froth stabilized by chemicals (frothers) and subsequently recovered from the flotation vessel. Depending on the settings of the various components of the flotation ""system"" (see Figure 1) it is possible to achieve a wide range of flotation performance."

"A computer model has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long- and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The model involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. IntroductionMining of mineral deposits in such a fashion so that, at depletion the maximum possible profit is realized, has been a very old problem of the mineral industry. In the past, when high-grade ore reserves were readily available and profits were very high, no question of optimum profitability was raised.However, recently the complexity of both open pit and underground mining has been increased tremendously. The additional problems of continuously rising production costs on one hand and of depressed metal prices worldwide on the other, have been demanding optimum profitabiliy from every mining venture .Particularly in the area of open pit mining, the sequence of ore and waste extraction has now become very important since the size of the pits and of the mining equipment has increased enormously. The process of open pit mining involves a continuous change of the open pit surface and there are many feasible plans of extraction which lead to the same final pit shape (ultimate pit limits). Each of these feasible plans generates a production schedule over the entire mine life, which mayor may not be optimal."

"Washing can be defined as the process used to eliminate or reduce the dirt (presence of fines or slimes) of one material. "The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. Trois des quatre zones qui forment l’Anomalie A possèdent des plans axiaux P2 qui peuvent être liés par l’entremise d’une géométrie qui respecte le style des plis P3 et P4. La continuité apparente de ces trois zones indique qu’une structure minéralisée pourrait s’étendre sur plusieurs kilomètres dans le secteur de l’Anomalie A."

"Newmont’s Phoenix mine began gold production in 2006 and has since experienced difficulties in reaching design throughput due to variability in ore hardness. In 2010, a debottlenecking study was conducted, generating multiple options to increase throughput of the existing Phoenix Mill through a series of phased expansions. An option was selected in early 2011 to increase the current concentrator capacity by approximately 25% through two phases. The first phase of the project was the installation of a secondary crushing and screening circuit in order to reduce SAG feed size from a P80 of 6 inches to 2 inches. The second phase focuses on downstream unit operations in the concentrator aiming to relieve existing bottlenecks such as flotation. This paper analyzes the design, commissioning, and operation of a recently installed SAG Pre-crush circuit (Phase 1). The design discussion will focus on concept development, flowsheet design, design criteria, process models, design limitations, and control philosophy. Discussion on the integration of operating data and flowsheet into design during engineering will be presented. Actual operating data of major equipment is gathered from the commissioning and operation of the circuit and compared to the initial design models. Conclusions will be drawn on equipment design factors used during engineering, and the success of model integration into operation. The paper concludes on the successes of the project and where improvements can be made during design.INTRODUCTIONThe Phoenix mine is located within 25 miles of the town of Battle Mountain, Nevada. The mill processes copper, silver, and gold ore. Production started in 2006 and has since struggled to reach the designed tonnage of 33,600 stpd due to the variability in ore hardness. In production year 2010-2011, the Phoenix mill average daily throughput of 33,000 stpd. In 2008, a larger primary crusher (FLS 60/89 gyratory crusher) was installed to operate in parallel with the originally supplied primary crusher (Metso 50/65 gyratory crusher), in order to provide additional capacity upfront in the circuit so that the primary crushing circuit could keep up with the mill.In 2010, a mill debottlenecking study was completed to assess the various options that could be implemented to increase the current mill capacity. The study was completed in late 2010 and contained four tonnages that Phoenix could achieve through various expansion scenarios. A single option was selected in early 2011 to increase the mill capacity from 33,000 stpd to 48,000 stpd. "Changing ore types, feed grades and c1rculat1ng loads are some of the many factors that can make flotation feed-back control difficult. To control a flotation circuit using conventional fixed-parameter control algorithms, one must either tune the controllers very often or tune the controllers to the middle of the normal operating range. The former approach is very time consuming, while the latter approach can lead to long periods of either very sluggish responses or highly reactive responses which can lead to instability. The problem becomes compounded if feed-forward variables are introduced, creating even more variables to tune. An alternative to a fixed-parameter control algorithm is an adaptive control algorithm. An adaptive control algorithm continuously retunes itself based on previous reactions to its changes. Feed-forward control also becomes much more viable because the algorithm will tune the feed-forward parameters and the feed-back parameters simultaneously. Using the combination of feed-forward and feed-back tuning is an effective way to decouple the loops needed in flotation circuits where one circuit feeds into another. The advantages of adaptive controllers over conventional controllers will be introduced through the use of a simulator. Also discussed will the be the implementation of adaptive controllers at Brunswick Mining and some of the modifications that are available to help solve more difficult control problems.Brunswick Mining is located just outside of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The concentrator processes approximately 10250 tonnes per day of ore that assays at approximately 8.9 %zn, 3.6 %Pb, 0.3 r.cu and I 00 gram/tonne of Ag. The four products produced are zinc concentrate assaying 51 %Zn, lead concentrate assaying 34 %Pb, copper concentrate assaying 21 %Cu, and a bulk concentrate assaying 32 %Zn and 18 %Pb."

"Gowest Gold Ltd. is in the process of developing the Frankfield East gold deposit located along the largely undeveloped Pipestone fault northeast of Timmins, Ontario. In addition to resource development and environmental permitting work the company has had an ongoing program of metallurgical and engineering studies aimed at evaluating options for processing the Frankfield East ore. Mineralization at the Frankfield project contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as the major sulphide minerals. Bulk flotation of all sulphides results in extremely high gold recovery. However, the gold is almost entirely associated with the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore and is refractory in nature requiring preoxidation treatment. Selective flotation was investigated to recover a gold-arsenopyrite concentrate thereby reducing the mass which would be subjected to further gold processing. As part of this work, a pyrite concentrate low in arsenic content was also recovered that would be suitable as a source of sulphur for a smelter (or other pyrometallurgical facility). Production of separate arsenopyrite and pyrite concentrates is frequently examined but rarely adopted due to the distribution of gold between the two products or the inability to achieve adequate separation. Several flowsheet options were investigated in the study. The best results were achieved following a sequential flotation flowsheet. The flowsheet configuration was key to meeting the targets for the two products. In this paper, the various options investigated are reviewed and the results of the final flowsheet are presented. The overall plan by Gowest was to evaluate all process options to bring the Frankfield East deposit into production. The ability to effectively separate the arsenopyrite and pyrite components in the ore provides Gowest with added opportunities to pursue both short and long term production scenarios."

Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate ?optimum? SMU mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each SMU. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of ?accepting dilution? and ?wasting ore? occurs. The reported SMU dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation and the reported SMU lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum SMU mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

During the process of developing surface or underground mines, some sites are considered for dumping of surface soils, while others are applied to reclaiming surface and waste disposal. For each kind of overburden, whether it be waste rock, low-grade material, or process tails, a separate storage site is considered so that it becomes possible to transport or recover the overburden separately. Decision-making must be completed by means of a selection process which takes into account the best methods of alternative sets in order to achieve these goals. This decision- making involves many parameters that are inter-related in that changes in some parameters affect the others. There are many methods of decision-making, however, Fuzzy Multi-attribute Decision-making (FMADM) and its functions are studied in this paper. The advantages of this method lies in its theoretical background, formulation, revising capability, unlimited alternatives, and consideration of the counteraction of the different parameters upon one another.

Conventional approaches to estimating reserves and optimizing mine planning and production forecasting result in single, often biased forecasts. This is largely due to the non-linear propagation of errors in understanding orebody attributes from a limited finite number of drilling data, throughout the chain of mine planning and mining. A new mine planning paradign is considered herein to include two interacting and potentially fusing elements: stochastic simulation and stochastic optimization. These two elements provide an expanded mathematical framework that allows the modelling of orebody uncertainty and its direct integration to mine design, production planning and valuation of mining projects and operations. This stochastic framework has shown to increase the value of production schedules in the order of 25%. In addition, case studies show that stochastic optimal pit limits are about 15% larger in terms of total tonnage, compared to the conventional (deterministic) optimal pit limits. This difference extends life of mine and adds approximately 10% of net present value (NPV) to the NPV reported above from stochastic production scheduling within the conventionally optimal pit limits. Furthermore, results suggest a potential new contribution to the sustainable utilization of natural resources.

"Schaft Creek is a calc-alkaline porphyry Cu-Mo-(Au) deposit located in northwestern British Columbia. The deposit formed in a volcanic arc setting, likely on a back-arc rifted continental fragment. It is hosted by Late Triassic basaltic to andesitic volcanic rocks of the Stuhini Group (Stikine Terrane), and is associated with porphyritic granodiorite dikes emanating from the nearby Hickman batholith. The age of the Hickman batholith is approximately constrained here by a composite U-Pb zircon date of 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, which is in broad agreement with a well-constrained age for mineralization at Schaft Creek of 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os molybdenite). The deposit is in most respects typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems, but displays silica-poor sericite-chlorite alteration in mafic country rocks in place of classic phyllic altera¬tion. The deposit comprises three distinct, but related, zones: the northern Paramount zone, the Main zone, and the West Breccia zone. Two phases of mineralization are observed. The first phase occurs as hydro-thermal veins and breccias, and minor disseminations. It consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and pyrite with potassic and sericite-chlorite alteration. The second phase is minor and consists of veins of molybdenite ± specularite, as well as Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide veins without any significant corresponding alteration. Extensive structural modification has affected the deposit both during and after its formation.Schaft Creek est un gîte porphyrique de Cu-Mo-(Au) calco-alkalin situé dans le nord-ouest de la Colombie Britannique. Ce gîte s’est formé dans environnement d’arc volcanique, probablement situé sur un fragment continental bordé par un bassin d’arrière-arc. Le gîte est encaissé par les roches volcaniques basaltiques à andésitiques du Groupe de Stuhini (Terrane de Stikine) d’âge Triasique tardif, et est associé à des dykes de granodiorite porphyrique provenant du batholithe de Hickman avoisinant. L’âge du batholithe de Hickman est estimé par un âge U-Pb composite sur zircon de 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, lequel est grossièrement en accord avec l’âge de la minéralisation de Schaft Creek, estimé a 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os sur molybdénite).Ce gisement, bien qu’à plusieurs égards typique des systèmes porphyriques calco-alcalins, présente une altération en séricite-chlorite pauvre en silice dans l’encaissant mafique a la place de l’altération phyllique classique. Ce gîte comprend trois zones distinctes bien que connexes : la zone Paramount au Nord, la zone Principale et la zone West Breccia. Deux phases de minéralisation sont observées. La première phase se présente sous forme de veines et de brèches hydrothermales ainsi qu’en disséminations mineures et consiste en bornite, en chalcopyrite, en molybdénite et en pyrite avec une altération potassique et en séricite-chlorite. La seconde phase est mineure et consiste en veines de molybdénite ± spécularite ainsi qu’en veines de sulfures de Cu-Pb-Zn sans association à une altération particulière. Le gisement a été profondément modifié par la déformation a la fois durant et après sa formation."

"Synvolcanic structures played a fundamental role in the genesis, morphology, and siting of volcanogenic massive sulfide ores and associated hydrothermal alteration in the Archean South Sturgeon Lake caldera complex. The most voluminous and persistent hydrothermal venting and massive sulfide deposition occurred along synvolcanic rifts and grabens associated with faults and tectonic fissures that created permeable fracture zones deep enough to access the underlying hydrothermal reservoir. The type of fracturing is highly variable and changes with the composition, competency, degree of consolidation, and alteration of host rocks. Synvolcanic structures and fracture styles also vary according to the amount and type of tectonic movement, including extension-related collapse, shearing and faulting perpendicular to the principal direction of extension, and orthogonal faulting and shearing. Permeable conduits were created by tension fracturing along fault zones, brittle deformation at the intersections of orthogonal faults, and by extensional fractures in stockworks. In texturally uniform footwall rocks, the distribution of alteration zones was controlled by the morphology of the structural conduit. In rocks with vertical and/or lateral facies, permeability, and competency changes (e.g., Lyon Lake graben), there was an additional stratigraphic control over fluid migration. Some crosscutting synvolcanic structures, alteration zones, and intrusions appear as stratiform units at the present erosion surface due to regional deformation and the present attitude of the volcanic stratigraphy.Hydrothermal mineral assemblages (e.g., quartz, carbonates, chlorite, pyrite, chalcopyrite) infilling structurally induced fractures provide good evidence of fluid migration pathways. However, mineralogy can vary significantly according to the fluid characteristics, host rock geochemistry, and subsequent metamorphic history of the area.Clearly, one of the best methods for locating volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits is to delineate the attitudes of synvolcanic structures, and explore those that show evidence of associated high-temperature hydrothermal mineral assemblages. "Sampling in the mineral processing industry has always been a subject which has received considerable discussion. There have been many volumes written on theory, techniques and practical application of sampling. However, until recently, the companies were not completely aware of the potential savings available with properly designed sampling systems both to assist in pieces: control and final product values.Definition In our discussion today, we will define sampling as the operation of removing a part, convenient in quantity for analysis, from a whole, which is of much greater hulk, and removing it in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested, i.e. size of particle, moisture content, specific gravity content, mineral and chemical composition, are the same in both the sample and the whole.Application It has been well established that undetected errors can result in large economic losses, thus most firms depend upon some type of sampling and sample analysis as a control in their continuous processing of materials. Despite the large investment in facilities and personnel the ""analysis"" of a sample can be no more accurate or reliable than the sample on which it is being based. The importance of sampling is recognized by a great many but it is appreciated by only a few, largely because it is sometimes one of the items which is taken for granted."

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. RNC's principal asset is the Dumont Nickel project (Dumont project) located in the established Abitibi mining camp, 25 km northwest of Amos, Quebec. RNC acquired a 100% interest in the Dumont property in 2007.
