The Mining Standards Task Force (MSTF) of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission in its Final Report (January 1999) specifically recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on approaches to valuation of Mineral Properties.Pl.2 On May 5, 1999 at the Calgary Annual General Meeting, CIM Council approved the formation of a Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMV al) to be co-chaired by Keith Spence (Chairman of the CIM Mineral Economics Society) and Dr. William Roscoe (Roscoe Postle Associates Inc.).Pl.3 The mandate of CIMVal is to recommend Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general and to be adopted by Canadian securities regulators and Canadian stock exchanges.Pl.4 The members of CIMVal represent of a mix of professional disciplines and experience in the field of Mineral Property valuation:Keith N. Impact of horizontal stresses on stability of underground workings in mines is a very important issue in underground mining. Identification of the initial state of stress in the rock-mass should be one of the main actions taken into account while designing and carrying out the mining activity in underground mines. The paper presents the tests on three dimensional stress pattern in Polish copper mines, owned by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. Group, carried out in 2012. The research program covered 7 measuring stands in two mines; their average depth was about 1000 m. The main aim was to identify the values and directions of horizontal stresses in order to optimize the extraction and to improve the safety. The overcoring method with the use of CSIRO HI type probe was applied. The paper also describes the measuring technique which was developed for the purpose of specific mining and geological conditions of KGHM mines, taking into consideration the natural hazards encountered there as well as technical and operational capabilities with regard to drilling equipment. The experience gained during the underground measurements and the issue of making such measurements in underground copper mines in Poland are presented in the paper. The stress patterns obtained during the underground measurements are of application importance for the process of designing the spacing of mine workings and improving their stability and mine support selection.

The kinetics of the oxidation of thiosulfate by copper(I I) in ammoniacal solutions have been studied in the presence and absence of dissolved oxygen. The formation of an intermediate mixed ammine/thiosulfate copper(II) complex ion has been confirmed and the rate of the reaction monitored by simultaneous on-line spectrophotometric, dissolved oxygen and potentiometric measurements. The rate of the anaerobic oxidation of thiosulfate by copper(II) was found to be orders of magnitude slower than that in the presence of dissolved oxygen and is inhibited in the presence of ammonia and anions such as sulfate and chloride as a result of competition with thiosulfate for the axial coordination sites on the copper(II) tetrammine complex. In the presence of dissolved oxygen, it was found that the copper(I) thiosulfate complexes are only very slowly oxidized while the copper(I) diammine complex is rapidly reoxidised to the copper(II) state. Thus, the initial rapid reaction with copper(II) leads to a pseudo steady-state condition in which the concentration of copper(I) is relatively constant and the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate can be predicted from the measured rate of oxidation of copper(I) by oxygen in ammoniacal solutions. The effects of the concentrations of ammonia and thiosulfate on the oxidation rate can be rationalized on the basis of the above coupled to the species distribution of copper(I) in the ammonia/thiosulfate system. It is shown that, with relatively simple measurements of dissolved oxygen and copper concentrations, the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate can be predicted under typical leaching conditions.

Carbonaceous matter (c-matter) in sulphide ores can adversely affect the process of gold recovery during cyanidation due to its ability to adsorb, or preg-rob, gold from a cyanide leach solution. This paper describes a standardized procedure for characterization of c-matter in an ore sample providing detailed information on its composition, maturity and preg-robbing capacity. The procedure utilizes the following complementary analytical techniques in conjunction with several chemical tests and assays: SEM/EDX Raman spectroscopy and TOF-SIMS. Results of the test can be used as a predictive tool to estimate the impact the c-matter will have on the gold recovery process. A comparison between predicted preg-robbing behaviour and cyanidation test results are presented.

This paper deals with drilling and blasting techniques at the Phoenix mine, near Grand F1nks, B.C., which is now operated by The Granby Mining Company Ltd. The difficulties of open-pit mining through former underground workings are unique to this operation. Rock types are related to drilling conditions, and the methods used, or contemplated, to overcome the several difficulties are outlined. The equipment used is also mentioned. Finally, blasting techniques and costs are reviewed. Introduction T HE Granby Mining Company operates on open-pit copper mine and concentrator at the site of the original Phoenix mine, near Grand Forks in south-central British Columbia. The pit is a side-hill cut measuring approximately 1,000 by 2,000 ft., and covering a vertical range of from 4,550 to 4,950 feet above sea level. The mill is currently operating at 1,900 tons per day. A 4.5 to 1.0 waste to ore ratio necessitates the removal of some 15,000 tons of ore and waste per working day. "Abstract - Potentially commercial deposits of kaolin are found in the fluvial Lower Cretaceous Chaswood Formation, the sedimentologically proximal equivalent of deltaic sediments of the offshore Scotian basin. The geological setting of the kaolin deposits has been interpreted from high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and boreholes, and mineralogical studies on one reference borehole. The kaolin is a product of early diagenesis involving meteoric water below the water table. The distribution of kaolin is controlled by the presence of intraformational unconformities that were sites of ground water recharge, and are marked by the development of oxisols above the water table. Such diagenesis was facilitated by interbedded, loosely consolidated, permeable sandstone. The highest-grade kaolin deposits are found in areas close to river belts, where overbank muds were not sufficiently drained to develop paleosols, but where later uplift created intraformational unconformities. In the sandstone, meteoric water flow altered feldspars to kaolin, thus yielding commercial silica sand deposits. It also altered ilmenite to rutile, which is concentrated as secondary placers in modern rivers that have eroded the Chaswood Formation and tills derived therefrom. Sommaire - Des dépôts de kaolin potentiellement économiques ont été notés dans la Formation de Chaswood d'’âge Crétacé Inférieur, laquelle constitue un équivalent latéral en milieu fluviatile aux sédiments deltaïques du bassin de Scotian. Le contexte géologique de ces dépôts de kaolin a été interprété a partir de profils de seismique-réflection à haute résolution, de sondages, et d’études minéralogiques sur un sondage de référence. Ce kaolin est un produit diagénétique précoce formé par de l’eau météorique sous le niveau de la nappe phréatique. La distribution du kaolin est contrôlée par la présence de zones de recharge associées à des discordances intraformationelles marquées par le développement d’oxisols au-dessus du niveau de la nappe phréatique. La présence d’interlits de grès perméables faiblement consolidés a contribué à l’efficacité de ce processus diagénétique. Les dépôts de kaolin les plus riches se trouvent en périphérie des rivières, là ou les boues de la plaine d’inondation n’étaient pas suffisamment bien drainées pour permettre le développement de paléosols, mais où des mouvements verticaux subséquents ont crée des discordances intraformationelles. La circulation d’eau météorique dans les grès a entraîné l’altération des feldspaths en kaolin, générant ainsi des dépôts économiques de sable de silice. Elle a aussi causé l’altération de l’ilménite en rutile, que l’on trouve dans des placers secondaires situés dans des rivières contemporaines qui ont érodé la Formation de Chaswood et les tills qui en sont dérivés."

The underground research presented in this paper was carried out in the two Polish copper mines: Rudna and Polkowice-Sieroszowice. The aim of the research was to determine stress field parameters. The measurement method and measuring positions are described as well as the measuring technique adapted to the geological and mining conditions of the Rudna mine and the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine. The identified values and directions of principal stresses and horizontal stresses and their importance for optimization of mining operation and safety improvement are discussed.

Over the last few years, interest in the development and construction of large diameter, high pressure pipelines from the Mackenzie Delta in northern Canada and Alaska's North Slope has steadily increased as a result of the projected decline in recoverable natural gas from existing reserves in western Canada. The success of such enormous pipeline projects, which will require utilization of a strain-based design approach, is largely based on successful application of high strength line pipe steels, such as X80 and X100. To fully realize the economic benefits of high strength steels, welding processes and procedures must be developed to ensure that the requirements for high strength and good low temperature toughness are confidently obtainable in field girth welds used in the construction of such pipelines. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the factors that control weld metal strength and toughness for a series of mechanized X100 girth welds produced using a range of narrow-gap gas-metal arc welding procedures. The attainment of high yield strength (> 810 MPa) is considered to be an important target to ensure overmatching strength relative to the longitudinal property distribution of X100 line pipe steel. Some factors that have been considered in this evaluation include influences of gas-metal arc welding process variants (single and multi-wire) and changes in welding procedure specifications, including joint preparation. Key components of this work relate to the reliable measurement of weld metal strength variation through-thickness and as a function of position around the circumference of a given girth weld.

"The aim of the study is to have a good understanding of the change in the seepage field during and after the tunnel excavation in weathering alteration rock. Field tests are used to monitor the changes of the water table and the numerical model is used to analysis the influence of the seepage filed with different operation conditions during and after the tunnel excavation. Results indicate that the depth, diameter and pumpage of precipitation well are the main factors that have a great influence on the drainage effect. Results also indicate that different operation conditions had various effects on the decrease in water yield during tunnel construction and the recovery in groundwater level after construction.INTRODUCTIONAs a potential disease during tunnel construction, Gushing water not only affected construction schedule, increased construction cost, as well as affected tunnel stability and safety during operation, but also decreased ground-water level. What’s more, the fall of water table caused by gushing water in tunnel would have influenced surrounding residents’ living water, agricultural water and ecological environment around tunnel. In recent years, enough emphasis has been paid to the influence on environment due to the construction of tunnel as a result of the reinforcement of people’s environmental protection awareness.As a result of water collection and drainage after excavation, groundwater was discharged into the tunnel, which caused a loss of water resources in the adjacent mountain mass. Furthermore, during tunnel operation, it was difficult for groundwater level to resume its original condition, which caused a bad ecological environment, because drainage system during tunnel construction destroyed its original hydrologic dynamic balance.In order to study whether decreased groundwater level resulting from tunnel construction could be restored during operation to its original condition, this paper gave a field monitoring on tunnel displacement during construction and simultaneously, generalized model of regional hydrogeology was created according to field hydrogeology to carry out a calculation of stable seepage flow and draw comparisons between recovery conditions of various water levels."

The adverse effects of clay particles on coal and mineral processing processes such as gravity separation, flotation, filtration, and thickening are well known in the mining industry. In particular, the presence of ultra-fine clay particles deteriorates froth flotation performance, which has been attributed largely to slime coatings that inhibit bubble attachment and to adsorption of the frother and/or collector by the clay particles. The present study was conducted to evaluate the performance of clay binding agents developed by Georgia-Pacific Resins, Inc. in enhancing coal and mineral flotation performance. Mechanical and column flotation tests were carried out using coal and potash samples. Process parameters investigated include slurry solids percentage, impeller rotation speed, binder dosage, collector dosage, etc. Flotation results show that use of GP reagents significantly enhanced flotation efficiency under different conditions. The required binder dosage and conditioning time was about 1 lb/t and 0.5-1 min, respectively. More significant improvements in process performance were observed at higher solids percentage and higher impeller rotation speed.

Mine-wide (MW) microseismic systems use widely spaced transducers to determine the source location and parameters of stronger microseismic events, while high frequency (HF) systems use fewer transducers to monitor local areas for the weaker events that can precede stronger events. Previous monitoring at the Creighton Mine indicated that an HF transducer located 120 m away from an active stope recorded two types of activity in response to production blasting: the first occurring at the same time as the production blasts and associated with the passage of the direct seismic waves from the blast through the local area, and the second occurring several hours later and associated with the arrival of a slower moving stress change through the rock mass (which was identified by the mine’s MW system). Interpretations of locally increased stress levels, based on analysis of the recorded HF events, correlated with the nearby occurrence of two strong seismic events. These results were applied to a similar monitoring trail at the Kidd Creek Mine where the transient stress changes induced by several development blasts were monitored. It was observed that increases in HF activity corresponded with the occurrence of MW events near the transducer location, and that fewer HF events were recorded the longer this occurred after the blast. Local geological features appeared to influence the number and occurrence of both HF and MW events.

It covers mining methods, the use of photoelastic models, the fore-casting of rock strains and their elimination, closure methods and other common methods of ground control.INTRODUCTIONROCK MECHANICS IS A STUDY IN ROCK BEHAVIOUR and, although it is being termed a new science, it has been practiced since the industry began. Every person involved with rock excavations, from the mine superintendent to the stope driller, is actually practising rock mechanics. They probably call it by another name -experience, and applications of this knowledge are in evidence throughout the Falconbridge operations. Only in recent years have formal rock mechanics studies been employed to provide technical assistance to the mine operators in their primary objective of producing ore safely."

Tantalum is an important minor metal for the production of high performance capacitors. Approximately 60% of the annual tantalum production is used in this application. Despite its high price of 298 US$/kg (average price 2010–2014), at the moment, no recycling from end-of-life products takes place. In the established recycling processes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), tantalum is lost in the slags of copper smelting, where it is highly diluted. An economic recovery is not possible at that point. Although tantalum must therefore be extracted from the WEEE stream before it enters smelting, no industrial recycling processes exist. The main reasons are its low concentration in the WEEE stream, lack of information about tantalum bearing devices, technical difficulties of extraction, and conflicts of interests regarding the recycling of other valuable metals in WEEE. In this paper, the results of a cooperation research project are presented. The aforementioned challenges are addressed and a novel tantalum recycling process is developed. Small pilot scale experiments show that a mechanical processing route can produce marketable tantalum-concentrates of 30% tantalum with yields between 60 and 70%. This is reached through a manual pre-sorting of potentially tantalum bearing products followed by a combination of an optimized comminution, sieving, air classifying, eddy-current (EC), and two stage magnetic separation. Key to the implementation of this process was a detailed survey of the tantalum concentrations in different products carried out by the industrial partner.

The total production of nonferrous metals in China is 31.35 million tons in 2010, which ranks first in the world for the past ten years. Large quantities of solid wastes including slag, residue, ash, and dust are produced every year in the production of nonferrous metals. These secondary resources are renewable, not only contain abundant valuable metals which can be recycled by metallurgical processing, but also could eliminate the pollution to the environment. In this paper, the status quo of the main nonferrous metals recycling in metallurgical industries in China was summarized, and the future development of waste processing and resource recycling was prospected.

"The Bidgood is a small gold mine about 5 miles east of the main Kirkland Lake camp. Since the beginning of production in 1934, gold having a value of $5,000,000 has been produced from the property. Practically all of this production has come from seven veins in a diorite stock that intrudes the Timiskaming sediments and lavas of the area. The veins consist of quartz, pyrite, and molybdenite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, calcite, and tellurides, and occupy northeast striking and northwest dipping thrust fault fractures. They have no apparent direct structural association with the faults of the main Kirkland Lake camp or the Larder Lake 'break' to the south; however, the veins closely resemble the former in their mineralogical composition and in their close association with syenite intrusives.ROCK TYPES AND THEIR STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICSThe dominant and, from an economic standpoint, most important rocks in the ore area consist of two separate families of Algoman intrusivesa diorite and a later syenite group."

AT the Sladen-Malartic mine, a number of orebodies have been mined, some by shrinkage and others by open sub-level scopes, from which the ore is handled either through a grizzly system or by mechanical loaders. This paper deals with the comparative costs and relative merits of the two handling arrangements. The facts brought out in this comparison have a bearing on the selection of a proper handling method. The mine is in Fourniere township, northwestern Quebec, about forty miles east of the town of Rouyn. It is served by the Rouyn-Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railways. Two vertical three-compartment shafts give access to the present workings. No. 1 shaft, at which the plant is centralized, is the main hoisting shaft, with five levels to 950 feet. No. 2 shaft, 2,400 feet east of No. 1, is under development, with four levels to 725 feet. At the main shaft, the ore is hand-trammed in 1 1/2 tons cars from the scopes to the stations o:i each level and hoisted in cages to surface at a rope speed of 900 feet per minute. Air-operated tipples are used to dump the ore through grizzlies of 14-inch openings into a surface bin of 150 tons capacity. The ore hoisted at No. 2 shaft is trucked from the headframe bin to the mill. Milling commenced in January, 1938, ar a daily rate of 250 tons. Within two months this rate was increased to the unit's maximum capacity of 325 tons. A second unit to treat a further 325 tons daily was installed in April, 1939. The orebodies mined at No. 1 shaft are parts of a silicified zone at the contact between syenite porphyry and greywacke. The zone is ten co sixty feet wide, strikes easterly, and dips to the south at 55 to 85 degrees. The hanging-wall of the zone is marked, though not precisely, by a strong gouge fault. Locally, the boundary of silicification may be as much as twenty feet either above or below the fault, but for practical mining purposes the fault is the hanging-wall of the ore-zone. The footwall roughly parallels the fault, but as an assay wall it is usually irregular in detail. The ore is dense and hard, a siliceous replacement of both porphyry and greywacke, mineralized with fine disseminated pyrite.

A significant problem in ultrafine particle classification is the significant amount of submicron particle by-pass to the coarse particle stream. In classifying cyclones, submicron particle by-pass to the underflow stream can be reduced by decreasing water recovery. Past studies have shown that a reduction can be realized when the feed solids concentration is increased or the apex diameter is reduced. However, both adjustments tend to increase the particle size cut point and negatively affect classification efficiency due to the impact on slurry rheology. The addition of a viscosity modifier to the feed stream of a classifying cyclone improved the classification performance and decreased the particle size cut point over a range of feed solids concentrations. The detailed test program investigated the use of the modifier in conjunction with varying apex diameters to identify conditions that minimize ultrafine by-pass. With small apex sizes, roping conditions were readily eliminated by the addition of viscosity modifiers. The addition of the modifier had no deleterious effect on froth flotation performance, which commonly serves as a downstream separation process. The fundamental and practical benefits of viscosity modifiers in classification processes are discussed in this publication.

Abstract -The Key Anacon deposit consists of four sulfide zones called, from south to north : Key Anacon No. 1, Key Anacon No. 2, Key Anacon No. 3, and Key Anacon Copper Zone. Massive sulfides of zones 1, 2, and 3 are underlain by rocks correlated with the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and are overlain by matie volcanic rocks correlative with the Boucher Brook Formation. In contrast to zones 1, 2, and 3, narrow northwesterly-trend.ing, copper-rich fracture zones occur within the Patrick Brook Formation. Sulfides in zone 2 occur as three mineralogical associations, namely: pyrite-chalcopyrite, pyrite-sphalerite-galerta, and pyrrhotite-sphalerite-galerta. The distribution of lithologies and en-echelon patterns of the three sulfide lenses of Key Anacon No. 2 zone are the result of F1 and F2 folding. Zone 2 is the most promising economically, with proven reserves of 1.11 million tonnes grading 0.2207o Cu, 3.47% Pb, 8.41% Zn, and 96 g/t Ag; the zone is open below a depth of 427 m.

"Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."
