Microwaves have considerable potential as an energy source in both mineral processing and metals extraction. In this research, the utilization of microwave radiation for the heating of a gibbsite type bauxite ore was investigated. Firstly, thermogravimetric studies were performed in order to characterize the dewatering processes of the ore. Secondly, both the real and the imaginary permittivities, which are the fundamental properties that determine the interaction of microwaves with any given material, were measured for the bauxite ore as a function of temperature. The changes in the permittivities were shown to be related to the dewatering processes. Subsequently, the effects of operating variables such as processing time, sample mass, particle size, microwave power, sample bulk density and carbon and magnetite additions on the sample temperature in a microwave field were studied. The results showed that under suitable conditions the bauxite ore could be readily heated. Therefore, there is considerable potential for the application of microwaves for the heating of bauxite ores.

Note. - Securing mine roof through consolidating thin or otherwise incompetent strata to increase overall thickness of the immediate roof beam is a new method of roof support and control which has aroused great interest amongst mining engineers and which is now being experimented with and thoroughly investigated by the United States Bureau of Mines. A paper on Roof Bolting, illustrated by photographs and motion-picture films, will be presented by Edward Thomas, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at the forthcoming Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. In the following pages, Mr. Thomas describes the methods used in roof bolting as illustrated by the photographs that accompanied his paper. The photographs are supplied through the courtesy of the United States Bureau of Mines, whose willing cooperation with miners and mining engineers in Canada is very well known and even more greatly appreciated. This method of publishing Mr. Thomas's paper is adopted because few, if any, Canadian mining engineers have actually seen installations of roof bolts and it is felt that the best possible presentation of such an interesting subject through the medium of the Bulletin will be attained by publication of the photograps over explanatory captions. - Ed.

"The corrosion of support bolts in underground mines has become an increasingly prevalent issue over the past two decades. With an increase of premature failures due to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), it is evident that understanding the environmental factor influencing the cable bolt corrosion is critical for maintaining effective ground support hence the safety and productivity of underground spaces. Experimental testing of rock and cable bolts were accomplished in a variety of packings, including saturated clay, saturated coal, mine water and grout/cement to investigate their corrosion behaviours. Water samples were obtained and analysed for pH and electrical conductivity (EC) during the experiment. After a period of 76 days the bolts were retrieved and analysed visually. Primary factors were found to be the presence of geological materials and the aeration of the bolts, i.e. the vicinity to air and air flow, while secondary factors were observed to be pH levels and EC. It was also found that the coal/clay interfaces and the water/grout/cement interfaces are non-relevant to corrosion of rockbolts and cable bolts. The proposed framework can be applied to other reinforcement materials used in underground spaces for improved understanding of corrosion environment.INTRODUCTION Rock bolts and cable bolts are the major reinforcement elements used in mining industry to improve the rockmass properties for safe and productive mining. They are normally used to pin large beams or blocks of rock in underground mines to stabilise the rockmass in the roof (strata) against collapse. The rockbolts are typically low cost hot rolled rebar while cable bolts are composed of strands of wire, normally wound together around a central king wire (Hyett and Bawden, 1993; Vandermaat, 2014). The typical length of the bolts in underground mines is 2.4 m and 4–12 m for rockbolts and cable bolts, respectively (Vandermaat, 2014; Windsor and Thompson, 1997). Cable bolts are much more flexible and usually offer a much higher load capacity than rigid rockbolts. Their increased length and flexibility allows cable bolts longer than the height of a roadway to be used in underground mines."

Non-contacting, radioisotope density and level gauges are discussed. The characteristics of the more commonly used isotopes, the techniques of detection and the methods of presenting information are reviewed. The gauge parameters of accuracy, response time and long-term stability are tabulated with reference to calibration techniques and operating requirements. Automatic control systems, both pneumatic and electrical, are used in conjunction with density gauges on filter feeds, and in thickener underflow and heavy media processes. These systems are described. Procedures for installation, start-up and operator training are outlined, along with considerations of preventative maintenance and service requirements. Typical gauge system costs, including capital expenditure, installation, start-up and service, are presented, wherever possible, in order to provide a basis of comparison with more conventional systems.

THE spiral stoping method of mining was first seen by the writer at the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting & Power Company's Hidden Creek mine, at Anyox, British Columbia. Where the method received its name, or by whom it was named, is a question, but it was employed by the Granby Company at their Phoenix mine, in the Boundary district, B.C., as early as 1901-02 after they had tried unsuccessfully other methods at that large, law-grade property. its adoption there was suggested by two miners, John and Steve Swanson, then working at Phoenix, who had previously been employed in the hard iron-ore mines of Michigan and Wisconsin, where they had learned this system of mining. The method proved successful at Phoenix and also, later, at the Company's Hidden Creek mine at Anyox, where some 40,000,000 tons, or more, of ore was mined in this manner during a period of about thirty-five years.

This research investigates the generation of an effective carbonaceous material from waste ‘pure water sachets’ and their subsequent utilisation as reductants for the reduction of the Opon Mansi iron ore. Composite pellets of Opon Mansi iron ore and pulverised carbonaceous material generated from waste pure water sachets were heated from room temperature to 1200 °C in a gas fired furnace for seventy minutes. The reduced pellet was analysed chemically for its oxygen and carbon content using a LECO Oxygen/Nitrogen and LECO Carbon/Sulphur analysers, respectively. It was observed that nuggets of metallic iron were readily produced with the carbonaceous materials acting as an effective reductant and source of chemical energy. XRD analysis of waste ‘pure water sachets’ revealed that the polymer was semi-crystalline with peaks that were identical to those of high density polyethylene (HDPE). Gas emission behaviour of the iron ore-PWS pellet was studied in a horizontal tube furnace at 1200 °C using an infrared gas analyser; the results revealed an exhaust gas rich in the reducing gases CO and CH4 along with CO2.

"Dome Mine's No.8 shaft is located about 1 km northeast of Dome's No.3 shaft and mill complex in South Porcupine, Ontario.No.8 shaft was brought into production in 1984 to hoist ore and waste for the complete mine as well as to service the mine from the 1600 level and below. Access above 1600 level is provided by No. 3 shaft.The rectangular shaft has six compartments consisting of two skips, a cage, counterweight, manway, and a service compartment. The over-all size of the shaft is 14 ft 7 in. by 20 ft by 7 in. (Fig. 1). A 7th compartment for shaft deepening is incorporated in the bottom 500 ft of shaft. The shaft is 5470 ft deep. The loading pocket is located at 5300 ft and the dump 61 ft below the collar.Surface facilities consist of a concrete headframe and a structural steel hoistroom which houses the cage and production hoists . The service hoist is a 12-ft diameter double drum, with one 1750 HP DC motor, and the production hoist is a 15-ft diameter double drum with twin 1750 HP DC motors.Both hoists have a single clutch and a single reduction gear train built by Orenstein & Koppel, and equipped with Canadian General Electric drives. The cage hoist is equipped with a disc pinion brake.The skips were originally aluminum 14-ton capacity, Rolla-chute design with steel liners on three sides and 4 in. of rubber on the back, to absorb the loading impact. The original guide rollers consisted of fixed 10 in. pneumatic tires. The face-to-face units were eventually replaced with larger airplane-type tires mounted on a spring loaded pivot arm."

Gipronickel Institute, JS has developed a new process and equipment for melting copper raw material in a two-zone Vaniukov furnace resulting in the production of white matte and low-grade slag in terms of copper content. Tests on processing copper nickelcontaining ore from Norilsk (Cu - 17 %), Ni - 3 %) were conducted in Vaniukov pilot furnace (total area 11.4m2) of Severonickel Combine. The amount of the processed material was about 11 thousand tons. Principal results of pilot testing are presented.

The Caledon Outwash is a large deposit of glaciofluvial gravel and sand located 55 km north west of down town Toronto. For the most part it was laid down in a meltwater channel fronting the Paris Moraine about 14,000 years ago. Applying the braided bar model of Eynon and Walker (1974) the principal facies present are imbricated coarse gravels (bar corefacies); crudely stratified, imbricated bar top sandy gravels; and trough crossbedded side channel sands and gravelly sands. Of lesser importance are crossbedded bar front gravels, shallow braided stream facies gravels, and stoss side facies sands and pebbly sands (rare). Lithologically these deposits are characterized by FIGURE I. Geological relationships of Caledon Outwash. Industrial Minerals in Canada up to 95% Ordovician limestone and siltstone in the gravel fraction. A siltstone content of up to 34% requires that beneficiation be carried out for the production of better quality aggregates. Resources remaining are estimated to exceed 500 million tonnes in 3000 ha of the most suitable part of the deposit. Present production is about 4.5 million tonnes per year, shared by several producers.

A graphical method has been developed for the evaluation of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Act Noise Exposure Index and the Equivalent Continuous Sound Level. The method makes use of a noise survey form and a mechanical integrator with two sliders, and is less tedious and susceptible to error than alternative methods. The graphical method is adaptable to various codes for noise exposure and may be used with any instrument that measures noise level. One example of its application to a practical situation in a Canadian mine is given to demonstrate the procedure .

"The extractive metallurgy of gold is largely controlled by mineralogical factors such as the presence of refractory gold, particle size, gangue mineral associations, presence of preg-robbers, oxygen and cyanide consumers, and locking characteristics in base metal sulphides. Light microscopy and automated mineralogy techniques are regularly used to characterise the effect of these variables on gold recovery. However, despite their widespread application there are a range of limitations when grades are low. Typically, the analysis of low-grade samples requires the preparation and analysis of numerous polished blocks. This is often costly and time consuming, with complexities regarding analysing statistically representative particle quantities and problems overcoming stereological bias. This is compounded by the “nugget” effect and high tenor nature of gold mineralisation. X-ray Microscopy techniques have the potential to overcome many of these problems, in particular the statistical representivity of analysis, removing stereological bias and effectively locating phases that are present in ultra-trace proportions. In this paper we outline the potential benefits of employing X-ray Microscopy (XRM) in characterising gold losses from a typical Cu-Au porphyry project, which were illusive in 2D based analysis. The talk will also outline additional application areas of XRM within the extractive value chain."

Stabilization of water-bearing sediments by the freezing method for shaft sinking has been used for over 80 years on the European Continent. The real application of this method in Canada started with the development of the potash mines in Saskatchewan during the past fifteen years. The great depth to which it is applied creates a number of problems which have to be seriously considered by engineers in order to produce a safe and economical design. Freezing depth, thickness of the ice wall, number of the freeze holes, capacity of the freezing plant, pre-freezing time, etc., are the most important points which have to be established. Recent field experience in freezing to great depth in the Saskatchewan area is immensely interesting and important for further development of our potash mining and the application of the freezing method.

A new solvent extraction process for the separation of cobalt, copper and zinc from nickel sulphate process streams has been developed. It involves selective extraction of these elements with a quaternary ammonium thiocyanate dissolved in an aromatic diluent. The chemical principles of this process have been investigated and are described, together with background physico-chemical data relating to the use of this solvent. Long-term testing in a continuous "mini-plant" circuit gave high-purity nickel and cobalt products (Ni/Co —200011 and Co/Ni ~1000/1 respectively).

The nickel laterite ore is composed of soft and hard minerals, and nickel distributes preferentially into the soft mineral rather than in the hard. Selective comminution of saprolitic and goethitic nickel laterites is investigated to upgrade nickel into the fine fraction using stirred milling. The optimal selective grinding conditions were determined through a kinetic study and the limit of selective grinding and nickel upgrade was analyzed. The breakage rates of minerals, grinding time, and the weight ratio of soft and hard minerals in the feed play an important role in selective grinding. A small breakage rate on hard minerals and a large breakage rate difference between the minerals are optimum for selective grinding. The soft mineral grade decreases with grinding time and the optimum grinding time is a trade-off of the soft mineral upgrade and recovery. The minerals weight ratio determines the limit of selective grinding. The effect of nickel upgrade is determined by both the conditions that influence selective comminution and the nickel grades in both the soft and hard minerals. The nickel grade in the soft mineral determines the limit of nickel upgrade.

An experimental study of the settling characteristics of a washery effluent originating as tailings from a froth flotation circuit was undertaken by using a systematic approach to select the most appropriate flocculant(s) under predetermined conditions. Selection and evaluation procedures which greatly reduce the effort required to select flocculants are described. The results show that, although different flocculants display superiority at different ranges of dosage. Separan MG 700 (Dow) is the most suitable on absolute economic grounds. Flocculant evaluation is based on a Cost Performance Index (CPI) which expresses the cost of flocculant (¢/ton) required to produce a unit settling rate (in./hr). From experiments carried out with a number of flocculant aid and flocculant combinations, it was concluded that the use of flocculant aids can be economically justified only if the settling rates required are higher than those obtainable at the optimum flocculant dosage. Otherwise, the value of the flocculant aid appears to be limited largely to the reduction of supernatant turbidity.

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. Chemical modelling is becoming increasingly useful in the development, analysis, design, and control of hydrometallurgical processes. The paper presents the development of reliable databases for chemical modelling of selected hydrometallurgical systems using state-of-the-art software, such as OLI. The modelling strategies are also demonstrated. The high pressure acid leaching (HP AL) of laterites, oxygen solubility in the oxidative leaching process of zinc sulfide, gypsum solubility and lead chemistry in mixed sulfate-chloride solutions are presented as case studies. This on-going work attempts to bridge the gap between theoretical research and industry needs. "This paper briefly introduces problems that can occur in the design of rare earth separation processes and that require close attention during engineering design. Important factors must be considered include the following. 1) The separation process is primarily based on two points. One is the raw material composition and the other is the product purity requirements. 2) Optimization of the rare earth separation process requires optimization of the flowsheet configuration and each process parameter. 3) The separation of heavy rare earths is performed under non-equilibrium conditions. 4) The radioactive elements uranium and thorium must be removed from the feed to separation. 5) Process economy and environmental protection must be considered together in the evaluation of any separation technology options. INTRODUCTIONThe importance of rare earth (RE) is well recognized in high-tech applications and sophisticated national defense technologies. RE is the treasure house of the 21st Century new materials. The RE separation processes developed using HEHEHP (P507), P507-alcohol (ROH) and naphthenic acid (NA) have been widely applied in China. These processes have led to industrial production of all of the individual RE with up to 4N (99.99%) or higher purity (Li, Wan, Lin, Xie, Lin, & Wang, 1980; Li, Wang, & Xie, 1985; Li, 1995; Li, Wang, Meng, & Li, 2005). In order to achieve the best economic and environmental benefits, this paper discusses several problems to which attention must be paid in the design of rare earth separation process."

The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.

"Mine Gallen is a zinc-rich pyritic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit that occurs in a fault-bounded block of intermediate volcanic rocks. The block is completely surrounded at the present erosion level by the eastern part of the Lac Dufault granodiorite. The volcanic succession includes a massive feldspar porphyry that is probably a subvolcanic intrusion, an andesitic flow unit and lapilli tuffs. The latter are variably sericitized and pyritic, especially in the vicinity of the massive sulphide into which they grade.The ore body is predominantly pyritewith local sphalerite contents as high as 20%; minor chalcopyrite and trace galena are disseminated, but are found mainly along late cleavage. Most ore is a breccia of massive to banded pyrite-sphalerite, veined by massive and complexly banded sulphides. These structures formed by repeated blocky jointing, cracking, sealing, healing and annealing as hydrothermal fluid repeatedly passed through a developing sulphide mound. The deposit is interpreted to have grown on the seafloor in a manner similar to active mounds in the Galapagos rift.RESUME La Mine Gallen exploite un gisement de sulfures massifs volcan géniques comprenant essentiellement de la pyrite riche en zinc. Ce gisement se trouve a /'intérieur d’un bloc de roches volcaniques de caractère dacitique a andésitique, limite par failles et entoure de tout cote par la granodiorite du Lac Dufault. La séquence volcanique comprend des coulées andésitiques et des tufs à lapilli ainsi qu'un porphyre feldspathique massif sub-volcanique. Les tufs sont sericitises et pyritises, tout particulièrement au voisinage des sulfures massifs."
