"I WOULD LIKE TO SAY how honoured I am that I have been invited to participate in this panel discussion. I have taken the liberty of narrowing my topic somewhat so that instead of speaking on the Sociology of Professions as a whole I will speak on one aspect of it, that is, on Manpower Problems in the Minerals industry of Canada, with some reference to a new social role for the professionals engaged in this industry. This probably means that I will be encroaching on areas covered or to be covered by other speakers, but I hope that when I do so I will do so from a slightly different vantage point. That is, from a sociological perspective rather than from a historical, industrial, business or professional perspective. I plan to divide my discussion into three areas, namely: (i) problems of ownership and control; (ii) environmental problems; and (iii) manpower and recruitment problems. I do not plan nor am I able to provide clear-cut solutions to the various problems I raise under these three headings. Rather, I hope that my discussion of the problems may form the basis for an extended discussion here and elsewhere. Because of the limitations of time, I will only briefly discuss the first two problem areas noted above – (i) ownership and control and (ii) environmental problems - and I plan to concentrate on the manpower issue."

A study to investigate the recovery of base metals, notably copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and manganese from iron-free concentrated chloride solutions using ion exchange was undertaken. In such solutions, apart from nickel and, to a lesser extent manganese, these metals are present predominantly as complex anions, and therefore conventional separation techniques based on cationic resins are not applicable. The results demonstrated that zinc, copper and cobalt can all be separately recovered leaving nickel and manganese behind. Specifically, zinc is a major nuisance element in nickel and cobalt processing, and the testwork showed that it can be preferentially removed prior to copper and cobalt. Selective resins for both copper and cobalt were identified, and it was demonstrated that the strength of the chloride background matrix has a significant effect on the efficiency of separation. An additional major advantage in such systems is that stripping can mostly be effected with water. Finally, some observations are made on the hurdles that must be overcome when attempting to introduce and commercialise new technologies.

This paper deals with materials of construction and problems encountered and overcome in leaching and filtration of oxidized sulphuric acid slurry in the Port Radium mill after eight years of operation. The slurry is characterized by a high calcium sulphate content as well as a high chloride level under oxidized conditions, both of which affected initial design and subsequent changes. Leach agitation tanks are of wood with a mild steel superstructure and stainless steel agitator and moving parts below solution level. Electro-polished 316 stainless steel cooling coils are used for temperature control of the slurry. The string filters are of the Oliver type with wood decking. Extensive use is made of wood, Linatex lined mild steel and stainless steel for the slurry handling. RESEARCH has been defined as the link between the present and the future. Science, wonderful though its achievements may be, has but scratched the surface of the unknown. Research is directing its attention to winning new facts in order that their application to the processes of today may open up new sources of wealth for the common benefit. Two classes of research investigations are often recognized-fundamental and applied, but these classes merge into each other and it is often hard to distinguish one from the other. Fundamental research is carried out primarily to develop basic facts, but frequently these are found to have immediate economic value, while applied research, specifically aimed at economic values, often necessitates a preliminary fundamental investigation. Both are essential and both should proceed by scientific method. It is obvious in fuel technology that a knowledge of the physical and chemical constitution of the various coals is fundamental to their industrial utilization, and further, a knowledge of the way these coals react under different conditions of temperature, atmosphere, etc., is necessary in solving such problems as storage, combustion, carbonization, gasification, or con-version to liquid fuels. The wide range of coals, the complexity, of their constitution, and the many uses for coal, makes fuel research no simple subject but one with unending possibilities. The Research Council of Alberta, formerly known as the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta, was established in 1919, to promote the development and conservation of the natural resources of the Province. The work of the Council was arranged in six major divisions: Fuels; Geology; Road Materials; Soils; Natural Gas; and Forest Products. The office and laboratories are located in the University of Alberta. The Council was financed until the depression of 1933 by a separate vote of the Legislature, but since then has been continued, though on a much smaller scale, as one of the activities of the University. It might, however, be noted that although the Council is now in abeyance, a skeleton organization has been maintained so that it can be brought back to active service as soon as conditions warrant. Annual reports are still submitted to the Legislature. Funds have not been made available, however, for the publication of the last five reports.

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. "The Sullivan mine; at Kimberley in southeastern British Columbia; is the largest silver-lead-zinc mine in the Empire and one of the largest in the world.The original discovery was made in 1892 by four prospectors. Until 1899, when the branch line of the Canadian Pacific railway from Cranbrook to Kimberley was completed, little work was done on the property. In 1900, systematic development was started, and during the next 3 years 5,000 tons of ore was shipped to the smelters at Nelson and Trail. By 1903, some 300,000 tons of ore was developed, and a smelter was started at Marysville, about 5 miles from the mine. However, this smelter closed down in 1907 because of metallurgical difficulties after treating 75,000 tons, and the property came under the control of the American Smelting and Refining Company. An option on the property was taken in 1909 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, who exercised their option in the following year. During the next 5 years by selective mining and sorting 188,000 tons of high-grade ore was produced and shipped to Trail. This tonnage came from the upper levels, about 4,600 to 4,800 feet in elevation. At the same time, deep drilling down to the 3,900-foot level showed the presence of an immense body of complex ore. In 1915, the main adit-the 3,900-foot level-was started, and by 1919 this had been driven a distance of 2 miles to develop the ore above this level. Meanwhile, progress was being made in overcoming the milling problems. An interesting account of this work was written by the staff ( 4). In 1923, the first unit of the present concentrator was erected, with a capacity of 2,500 tons a day, and thereafter the rate of production increased rapidly. In 1934 it was around 8,000 tons a day, and to date a total of about 30,000,000 tons of ore has been sent to the mill. In recent years, a considerable part of the production has come from levels between the 3,900-and 3,350-foot, which were opened by an internal incline shaft started in, 1930. In 1942, tin was added to the products separated at the concentrator."

Electric arc furnace steelmaking is a dominant approach in North America and controlling EAF emissions is a key issue today because of stringent permit limits imposed by various regulatory bodies. In the present study, an attempt has been made to mathematically model EAF emissions, and use the models as a predictive tool for fine tuning the process. CFD modelling has been used to model various fume release scenarios, and optimize the exhaust conditions for maximum capture. Thermodynamic calculations have been used to analyze various chemical reactions which lead to the emissions of hazardous air pollutants with special emphasis on Zinc, Lead and Manganese.

THIS paper deals with the subject of inbye power as the mechanical . engineer sees it, and invites discussion, particularly from the electrical engineer. At the outset, it will be necessary to clear the ground a little by some definite statements. In this question of compressed air versus electricity for the transmission of power and driving of machinery in underground workings, we must see that there are definite fields that compressed air on the one hand, and electricity on the other, can fill to much greater advantage than the other, and in which there can be little or no direct competition, at least for the present. It is under conditions where these fields overlap, and as to where the line must be drawn between the two, that the respective merits of each must be considered. Steam was the first means used to transmit power from the surface of a mine to drive underground machinery, and so long as distances were short and means possible to ensure fairly efficient use of the steam, and where the fire hazard was not in evidence, it gave fairly efficient service. I have in mind an instance during my own connection with the mines-a duplex pump at the shaft bottom at Princess colliery, driven by steam, and which used the steam compound and condensing; and, but for the mechanical difficulties, it was a not inefficient proposition. The steam was taken direct from the surface boiler-plant through a line down the shaft, and used directly at the pump, being in effect a straight conversion from coal to steam to work done. It was the mechanical arrangement, and failure of the pump in that direction, that led to its removal and replacement by something better in the way of an electrically driven turbine pump. Given modern mechanical arrangements, such as a steam-turbine drive on a high-speed turbine pump, and all other parts made in accordance with best practice in the art of steam generation and use, a steam-driven unit fully as economical would have been obtained. But the central electric supply station, and all that that means or promises (not always the same), turned the scale against steam.

The fracture behavior of high strength Al7050 alloy was investigated at room and elevated temperatures using small size, V-notched tear (called Kahn specimen) and compact tension, CT, specimens, respectively.To study the elastic-plastic behavior of the alloy, the tensile test was also performed on the sub-sized cylindrical tension test specimen. The microstructure of the alloy was examined using optical- and scanning electron- microscopy. The rupture mechanisms and crack path were also studied by examination of specimens' fracture surfaces using SEM. The microstructure examination revealed equiaxed grains and some elongated grains in rolling direction, with the areas of partial re-crystallized grains where coarse intermetallic particles are mostly found.In general, fracture surfaces were indicative of dimpled ductile type. Considering the fractographs of tensile specimens, the void growth mechanism is also dominant in fracture of these specimens. Nevertheless, in some regions, smooth areas can be observed due to the friction during rupture process. The results of mechanical tests at RT made the evaluation of tear strength to 0.2 % tensile yield strength ratio, as a measure of notch toughness, available. According to elevated temperature, 150°C, test results and plots of log da/dt vs. log KI , the crack propagation behavior over discrete ranges of crack growth rates could be assumed linear and then be obeyed as a power law equation in the form of da/dt = A (KI)n .

"Mining has been a staple to technological advancement ever since the dawn of time. By harnessing the different physical and chemical properties that each mining commodity brings to the table, more and more innovation is developed and manufactured. As these non-renewable resources continue to be extracted, the industry as a whole faces a challenge in finding the next economical deposit as well as declining grade at the current operations. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed. This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include one underground and three open pit mines that are precious metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed. The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are also reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)."

ROCK wool, one of the most recent additions to the list of Canadian-made, insulating materials, is a soft, light, fibrous material consisting of interlaced, flexible, glassy fibres so exceedingly fine that, individually, they are almost invisible to the naked eye and will float in air. In the process of manufacture, a suitable rock, generally a self-fluxing argillaceous dolomite consisting of nearly equal proportions of acidic and basic constituents, is melted to a completely fluid state and then converted into fibres either by a blast of steam or air, or by a mechanical device. The increase within the past five years in the number of plants in the United States making rock wool and slag wool has been remarkable, especially in view of the depressed conditions prevailing 'with most industries during this period. In 1930, there were only 8 plants reporting production of .these materials, whereas at the present time there are 44 plants in the United States listed as making these products, and there are 3 plants in Canada. In 1929, the total sales of rock-wool products in the United States amounted to-$2,377,324. In 1934, according to the National Rock and Slag Wool Association, 26 member companies reported sales of $3,695,405, and in 1935 the sale's of 30 member companies had a value of $5,571,469. The establishment of the rock-wool industry in Canada followed the publication in 1931 of a report (1) by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, Ottawa, in which was set forth the results of field work and laboratory studies which indicated that large deposits of rock in the Niagara peninsula, hitherto regarded as valueless, were suitable for the making of rock wool. This report was supplemented in 1934 by another report (2), giving the results of further laboratory and commercial-scale tests on the rock from these particular deposits, which proved conclusively that rock wool of good quality could be made from the rock in question.

Several new hydrometallurgical plants have been built in the past years, new processes and equipment as well as advanced process control systems are being used to deal with the increasing requirements of safety, quality and production. Plant Information Management Systems are now being recognized as a key infrastructure component of the plant, giving the management, the operators, process engineers, finance, maintenance, and regulatory agencies an integrated view of the operation and providing the links for the (increasingly) multidisciplinary organization. This paper reviews several implementations of Plant Information Systems; real time performance management infrastructure examples are reviewed as a key component of business strategies, such as Mine to Port Planning and Supervision, Metallurgical Mass Balances, Solvent Extraction Composition Statistical Process Control, methods to minimize organic losses, reduce variable costs and to improve metal extraction. Several examples are provided to illustrate how companies are using the real time and historical information from assets and metallurgical processes to enable and empower people to improve the operations quality, safety and throughput, as well as continuous improvement and innovation initiatives.

DURING the past 5 years a large amount of money and effort has been expended in exploration of iron-formations and in testing their suitability for beneficiation. Beds of ferruginous material are numerous and widely distributed in the Precambrian rocks of Canada and practically all of the known iron ranges or belts have been examined to a limited degree at least in an effort to evaluate their potential as sources of iron ore. A number of favorable beds have been selected for mining on completion of surface sampling, diamond drilling, extensive metallurgical testing and economic studies, and many other ranges are being studied. There are still a great many iron-formations that have not been evaluated by modern concentration methods and their regional extent is not fully known. The iron-formations are easily located by airborne or ground magnetic surveys but the main task in finding a mineable ore-body of this type amounts to locating a bed sufficiently large for mining which consists of material that can be concentrated economically by modern beneficiating methods. "Syncrude Canada Ltd. operates one of the largest surface mines in the world. The mining operation has two distinct phases: (1) the removal of the overburden, utilizing trucks and shovels; and (2) the mining of oilsand with drag lines and bucketwheels. Both phases combined move approximately 330 000 BCM per day.In support of current production demands and to provide a contingent oi/sand source, Syncrude has developed an Auxiliary Production System (APS) supported by the truck and shovel operation. This system utilizes oilsand sources within the existing mine area on an as-needed basis.The recent increased capabilities of the processing plant to handle a larger volume of oilsand has increased the reliance of the APS system. To facilitate the increased capacity, an auxiliary mine was developed external to the Base Mine operation with a production capacity of4.7 MBCM of oilsand per year.Development of the Northwest Auxiliary Pit began in January 1990, with the first cubic metre of oilsand taken to the plant in June, 1990. The Auxiliary Pit, as designed, has a total ore reserve of 68 MBCM of oi/sand."

The diamondiferous Drybones Bay kimberlite pipe is the largest pipe (900 m by 400 m) discovered to date in the Northwest Territories. The pipe intrudes granodiorite of the Archean age Defeat Pluton and contains crater, reworked crater (epiclastic) and diatreme facies kimberlite. In-situ measurements of seismic p-wave velocity were recorded with in-line refraction arrays over representative areas. Refractions from fresh kimberlite were recorded over epiclastic facies kimberlite in the eastern portion of the pipe and returned an average velocity of 4300 m/s. Refractions from weathered kimberlite were recorded on all lines and returned velocities ranging from 1900 m/s to 2200 m/s. Granite surrounding the pipe returned an average velocity of 5400 m/s. The results indicate that there is a definite contrast in seismic velocities between kimberlite and country rocks at Drybones Bay and suggest that seismic refraction surveys may be an effective means of screening kimberlite targets in glaciated areas underlain by igneous or metamorphic rocks.

In mining, as in other business and engineering enterprises, efficient operation depends upon how well and how quickly the lines of communication can function. Mines have used the telephone on and between levels for many years, but in the hoisting shaft maintenance of physical wire connections for communication with the moving cage or skip has been found, for all practical purposes, impossible. A most natural solution was, therefore, the code-bell or buzzer signal system between fixed levels, and this has been standard practice throughout the mining world for many years. However, this system has serious limitations which make it impossible to signal a cage between levels in the shaft, and it requires crude, hazardous or costly methods for signalling during daily shaft inspection. Radio signalling overcomes these difficulties, because the communication medium is never broken and the cage-tender or shaft inspector can safely signal to, and receive signals from, the hoistman at any time from any position in the shaft, whether stationary or in motion. In addition to both audible and visual code signalling, two-way telephone communication and slack cable alarm are facilities made possible in recent commercially developed equipment.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. Preceded by brief general considerations such as the development of the mining industry in. the Province of Quebec, the choice of plant location, the types of problems studied etc., the paper gives a complete description of this new research and treatment center for metallic, non-metallic and asbestos ores. Facilities for carrying out operations in the three sections of the plant -the sampling section, the ore treatment section and the asbestos section -are fully discussed as well as laboratory facilities for (a) the preliminary testing of ores prior to pilot plant treatment and (b) the grading and testing of asbestos fibre. Given a promising claim and the required financial backing to develop it, the first problem that confronts the mine operator is usually the selection of the necessary compressed air plant. The size and type of drive are questions that naturally follow, the former being determined largely by the amount of money available and the speed with which it is desired to carry on the programme of development. The type of drive, such as electric motor, steam or oil-engine, depends on local conditions and has an important bearing on the cost of operations. ns. Few prospective mine operators are fortunate enough to locate claims within the service radius of electric power-lines, although this is more likely to happen nowadays than formerly. In the majority of cases, however, some other form of prime mover is necessary. When wood or coal are available at moderate cost, a small steam-driven plant is usually chosen. Such plants are often arranged so that they can be converted to electric-drive should future developments at any time make this desirable. Many plants of this type are installed in northern Ontario mines. When wood or coal are costly or difficult to transport, oil-engine driven mining plants have many advantages in their favor, and are now quite commonly used. Oil in some locali-ties is considerably cheaper than wood or coal, and is much easier to transport over bad roads.
