Introduction In this paper we have endeavoured to present a general description of the electrical applications underground at Copper Mountain, including types of equipment used, problems encountered, and methods by which they were overcome. No attempt has been made to outline in detail the wiring of various circuits. Until recent years, the main use of electrical energy underground at Copper Mountain consisted of direct current for locomotives, trolley systems, .and signal and communication circuits. The prohibitive cost of equipment and distribution systems prevented any extensive use of a.c. beyond that commonly used for essential lighting purposes. However, in 1943 the shortage of manpower and the increased cost of labour and supplies necessitated a general mechanization programme.

"AbstractThe Cardium formation of northeastern British •Columbia •contains an erosional unconformity that becomes progressively more severe northward until, •at Liard river, the stratigraphic hiatus eliminates the underlying Lower •Cardium sandstone, the Kaskapau formation, and the upper Dunvegan sandstones. The area of unconformity roughly coincides with the distribution of the continental facies of the earlier Dunvegan formation. Along Wapiti river, the zone fossil Scaphites ventricosus Meek and Hayden is found in the Bad-heart member of the overlying Wapiabi shale; Scaphites :preventricosus. Cobban marks the base of the Wapiabi shale; Scaphites cf. corvensis •Cobban is found in the middle shale member of the •Cardium formation. The log of the Red-Willow No. 1 well shows close similarity to the outcrop sections south of Wapiti river. The Cardium formation is mainly late Turonian in age. Two other pre-Cardium Turonian sands of north-eastern British Columbia are named the Wartenbe and Tuskoola sands.IntroductionTHE Upper Cretaceous Cardium (Bighorn) sandstone formation of the Foothills of northeastern British Columbia carries within its formational limits an erosional unconformity. The unconformity decreases to the southeast, becoming in immediate shoreline regions, now under the plains, a minor diastem. Such diastems, or stratigraphic intervals of non-deposition, occurring in the shallow unda-zone are paralleled in the deeper portions of the unda-zone by the phenomena of sub-aqueous winnowing. '.This winnowing and re-working •at critical depths creates sand areas with porosity."

ROASTING is usually thought of as a process in which finely crushed or ground ore is heated with air in a suitable furnace in which the ore is rabbled or agitated in such a way as to insure complete reaction between the oxygen of the air and the oxidisable constituents of the ore. Roasting in this sense is used only to a very limited extent in the iron and steel industry. This is because, in most iron ore deposits mined today, the ore is of a type that does not require roasting. Where this process is used, it is usually because of some special circumstance, such as a peculiar economic condition, that warrants it. If roasting is looked upon in the broader sense as a gas-solid chemical reaction carried out at an elevated temperature in which both gaseous and solid products are formed, then the process is used in the iron and steel industry to a greater extent

A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. Taconic orogeny, the first phase of Palaeozoic deformation, took place in Middle and/or Late Ordovician time and was accompanied by intrusion of ultrabasic rocks. Evidence of the -

"The integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) aims to provide life cycle management decisions for military platforms and their propulsion systems with reduced life cycle cost and increased operational readiness and safety. Among all the issues of IVHM, understanding the physics of failure and predicting lifetimes of the critical components are at the core: the decision makers have to know when and how components may fail in order to plan ahead. The difficulties to tackle failure problems lie in determining the material response to cyclic and dwell loading in a hot and/or corrosive environment, which all combined to induce multiple deformation and damage mechanisms, resulting in mix-mode failures. Decisions on component replacement (material substitution) and mission planning must be based on quantitative knowledge of the failure physics to mitigating the risk. This paper addresses the critical failure issues including creep, low cycle fatigue (LCF), thermomechanical fatigue (TMF); and presents a mechanism-based approach to life prediction. The mechanism-based approach, by its physics, is widely applicable over the entire operational spectrum of both structures and engines, and therefore is suitable for IVHM purposes."

Hydraulic hoisting offers a number ~f attractive features over conventional hoisting methods: small shaft space requirements; great flexibility of layout, including pick-up or delivery of the material at points distant from the mine shaft; low investment and operating costs. However, limited practical experience with this type of hoisting dictates that careful design and, frequently, extensive testing be done by competent engineers before large-scale installations are built. This paper covers the following: basic laws and design criteria for hydraulic hoisting installations; a description of a coal hoisting installation which has been in industrial operation since 1960, with a vertical lift of 600 feet and an annual capacity of 500,000 tons of -3 ~-in. coal; and a tentative appraisal of the process, including cost estimates. "Introduction0N MAY 2th, 1953, Socony Seaboard Pembina No. 1 well, located 70 miles west-southwest of Edmonton, was completed as a producer of high-gravity oil from the Cretaceous Cardinm sand. This event is possibly the most significant in the development of the oil industry in Western Canada since the Devonian discovery at Leduc in 1947. The result of the Pembina discovery and the follow-up drilling has been a tremendous increase in interest in the Cardium formation.Descriptions of the Cardium formation, as it occurs in the 'Central Foothills' and in the 'Southern British Columbia Foothills' have been presented by R. E. Folinsbee (9)-and C. R. Stelck (21), respectively. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the more regional aspects of the subject.The name Cardium was first used .as a stratigraphic term in 1863. Dr. James Hector ( l2), geologist attached to Captain John Palliser's exploratory expedition, gave the name 'Cardium to the whole section of marine Cretaceous beds exposed along the Bow river west of Calgary."

In order to obtain values of angle of shearing resistance and initial resistance for McMurray oil sand for use in general design calculations, the shear strength of this oil sand was measured in a controlled strain type tester, modified so that the rate of deformation could be varied between 0.01725 and 0.1869 inches per minute. Effect of temperature was investigated by adapting the equipment to operate at both 71 ° and 185 °F. The data are reported in terms of angle of shearing resistance and initial resistance for varying rates of deformation, composition and temperature. While the main sets of results reported here were obtained at a bulk density range of 108.7- 109.5 lb. / cu. ft., some results were obtained at a bulk density range of 101-102 lb. / cu. ft. Analysis of varance tables have been drawn up from the results obtained from least squares correlations and significance tests applied. It was concluded that oil content and temperature were significant variables for the degree of shear strength developed by the oil sand; increase of oil content and decrease of temperature each cause an increase in shear strength. The bulk density range 108.7 to 109.5 lb./cu. ft. gave angles of shearing resistance from 30° to 40° and initial resistance values of 0.37 p.s.i. to 0.85 p.s.i. For the bulk density range 101 to 102 lb. / cu. ft., lower values of shear strength were obtained, indicating that compaction density was also of importance

"Real-time, on-stream analysis of the metal content of process slurries is an essential prerequisite for process monitoring and advanced control of mineral processing circuits. On-stream X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) sensors for base metal applications are available commercially and form the basis of many plant monitoring circuits. To date, these commercial technologies have been insufficiently sensitive to measure precious metals such as gold and platinum group elements, typically present at part-per-million (ppm) and sub ppm levels. CSIRO has developed a novel X-ray based technology, called UltraGold, which enables detection of gold in slurries on a real-time basis with a precision below 100 parts-per-billion. This technology is based on the use of advanced X-ray optics, extensive Monte Carlo computer modelling for analyser design, high accuracy X-ray spectrum fitting where the X-ray intensities are matrix corrected. In this paper, we will introduce this technology and discuss the results of a proof of principle study performed in the laboratory with plant slurries (tailings and concentrate) from an Australian beneficiation plant. Finally, we will discuss further planned improvements. As projected grades in (gold) mining around the world fall and several large-scale mines approach the limits of their economic reserves, this method can enable significantly reduced operating costs by rapid analysis to improve circuit efficiency and hence improve recovery significantly.INTRODUCTION This paper describes a study undertaken to explore the feasibility of applying CSIRO?s UltraGold XRF technology to the on-stream measurement of gold in process slurries. The provision of rapid, accurate information of gold grade in feed, tailings and concentrate streams would facilitate significantly improved process control and early detection of plant upsets, resulting in substantial cost-savings. CSIRO have patented X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques for the analysis of key elements in slurries present at part-per-million (ppm) and sub-ppm levels. Conventional, commercially available on-stream XRF instruments generally have detection limits in the tens of ppm range, precluding their use for analysis of elements like gold that are mined and processed at much lower concentrations."

"Rare earth elements have unique properties because of the special electronic structure. In this paper the improvement of refractory material performance by the light rare earth oxides was introduced. The experiments showed that adding a bit of rare earth oxide could obviously improve the performance of the refractory material. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, refractory materials are widely applied in the steel smelting process as a ladle lining material. In China, although the total production of fire-proof material exceeds normal demand, but the quality and variety of fire-proof material still have a big gap with world advanced level. A number of refractory products need to be imported from abroad. With the rapid development of domestic steel production, the ladle lining with refractory is gradually running after the world advanced level on production technology, production variety, and quality level. It replaces some imported products meeting the needs of the development of the iron making production. Therefore, there is an important significance to research on solving the problems of the ladle refractory reasonably and avoiding or reducing blind and not proper use of the imported refractory ( Jing, 2007).On the other hand, rare earth oxide has some special excellent properties. Firstly, they are very good refractory materials with their high melting point;Next, they have good resistance to water and alkali resistance function;Thirdly, it is easy for rare earth oxide to generated composite oxide reacting with other metal oxide,achieving the purpose to improving the material properties (Xu, 1978; Diao, 1979). China has a variety of rare earth resources,and rare earth resources is more advantageous in Baotou,taking up about 36 percent of world reserves,which is the world's top of rare earth mineral. In recent years the rare earth products output has risen sharply and many varieties and specifications have appeared. So it is necessary to study the new field of rare earth compound to open up new markets. Thus, it has a very vital significance to promote the further development of rare earth industry, adjust the rare earth products structure, ease the contradiction between supply and demand, and improve refractory products quality and grade in order to better serve the main body production.I In this paper, the experiments are mainly for 210 tons of Al2O3-MgO style series refractory materials belong to ladle lining bag from Baotou Iron & Steel Group Corporation Sheet Factory. The Mary River iron ore deposits were discovered in the 1960?s. The high quality of the deposits was immediately evident, and drilling programs were successful in defining a resource adequate for supporting a feasibility study. Through a combination of ownership, market and political forces, the deposits were not developed. Having missed the window of opportunity, the project remained dormant for over three decades. Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, with its 100% ownership of the Mary River deposits, began trading publicly in 2004. Modern exploration and metallurgical test work began in 2004 and has continued in 2005 and 2006, resulting in total expenditures during this period of almost C$60 million. In May 2006, an engineering team lead by Aker Kvaerner E&C, a division of Aker Kvaerner Canada Inc., completed a scoping study based on the first of five identified deposits. Highlights of that study include direct shipping of high quality lump ore to Europe over a 34 year mine life at a production rate of 10 million tonnes per annum, based on an indicated resource of 309 million tonnes at 66.1% Fe and an inferred resource of 28 million tonnes at 65.9% Fe. Capital costs were estimated at C$1.5 billion. Using iron ore prices approximately 36% below that of the 2006 market, a pre-tax internal rate of return of 15% was estimated assuming equity financing. Payback on initial capital was 5.9 years. The pre-tax life-of-mine cash flow was estimated to be C$6.3 billion. As a result of this study, Baffinland initiated a Definitive Feasibility Study, under the management of Aker Kvaerner, which is scheduled for completion in December 2007. This paper touches on the geology of the deposits, the current resource and the outlook for expansion. Project permitting, construction planning, logistical challenges and ocean shipping considerations are discussed, providing a current perspective on the project scale, scope and timeline for commercial production. In addition, an overview of the Company?s bulk sampling program will be provided.

Introduction Numerous papers have been written dealing with the construction and functions of, and the environmental conditions created by, Diesel locomotives. Therefore, it is not my intention to attempt to deal with these phases of Diesel transportation other than to make reference to them in ?relation to and in connection with actual operation. The rapid expansion of industry during recent years and the necessity of products being made available at competitive prices in home and world markets has made the demand for cheaper coal a very serious factor for the coal industry. This condition has meant each coal producing country looking into ways and means whereby greater productivity and reduction in cost could he achieved. Surveys made show that, in addition to face mechanization, savings, in some cases substantial, can be made in transportation. Ventilation The most efficient mines are in-variably the well ventilated ones, for it is true that, where there is good ventilation, there are usually good roads. These combined factors are very essential where Diesel locomotives are used. Good roadways and track allow speed, and good ventilation dilutes rapidly any disagreeable exhaust gases. Locomotive Development In the older types of auxiliary rope haulage, coal hauled per haul-age hand is usually very low.

"IntroductionFEW COUNTRIES equal Canada in the diversity of its mineral output, the range of size of its mine operations, and the extremes of climatic and topographic conditions under which its mining is carried out. Camps large and small are scattered over thousands of miles, some served by excellent communication lines, many in remote regions of the north. Common to most of the deposits is that they are worked by underground methods, and rely on adequate hoisting installations for the success of their operations.Hoisting in some form •pre-dates all other mechanical operations in mines and the hoist remains one of the most important pieces of equipment at the average mine. It provides the single line of communication along which must pass the men and materials to mine the rock, and in turn carry the ore to a place for refinement.Development of Mine Hoists in CanadaCanadian designed hoists were first built and •placed in operation about the year 1880 and have since developed in pace with the rapid growth of the Canadian mining industry. Early machines were all of the steam or compressed-air driven types, of light construction and driven by two duplex slide-valve open-frame type engines. As their application and size increased, designs became more rugged and more efficient."

Development of the Canadian North, a subject of growing national interest, must in part await the development of better forms of trans-port. The estimated 500,000 square miles of muskeg terrain in the north combined with the" scarcity of roads make essential the early development of special purpose muskeg vehicles. Good progress has been made in the last eleven years in classifying muskeg and some progress has been made in determining its mechanical properties. Limited travel is now possible through the use of special purpose tracked vehicles which have been built without adequate design data. A program to provide data which can be used to optimize muskeg vehicle designs began in 1957. The results of the second phase of this pro-gram are presented in this report. It is shown that vehicle performance in muskeg is directly related to the mechanical properties of the muskeg. Further, it is shown that good de-sign practice for tracked vehicles expected to operate in snow, sand, soft clays and loams is also good practice for muskeg vehicles. All indications are that muskeg mechanics is properly a part of conventional soil mechanics.

"Consolidated Sudbury Basin Mines Limited owns two mines, 4 miles apart, near the southwest end of Sudbury Basin. The Errington mine lies close to the north boundary of Creighton Township and about 18 miles by car from Sudbury. The Vermilion Lake mine is in Fairbank Township, on the south side of Vermilion Lake.The first discovery of base-metal mineralization within Sudbury basin was made by James Stobie in 1897 at Stobie Falls on the Vermilion River, half a mile west of the Errington mine. A few years later Alphonse Oilier made a discovery of massive pyrite with base-metal sulphides near the west end of the present Errington workings.No work of consequence was done on these discoveries until 1924, when Joseph Errington acquired options on a large acreage of ground which was later taken over by the Treadwell Yukon Company Limited. After considerable diamond drilling this company sank No. 1 shaft in 1926. In the next three years, a large amount of underground development was done, a pilot mill was constructed and operated for two years. All operations ceased in 1931 with the fall in metal prices. While in operation the pilot mill treated 186,172 tons of ore the average grade of which was 1·07 per cent copper; 1 10 per cent lead; 4·60 per cent zinc; 0·03 ounces gold; and 1 70 ounces silver.Up to the time of closing in 193 l there had been completed at the mine 26, 790 feet of lateral work and 75,500 feet of surface and underground diamond drilling. The company records, however, showed no figures on ore reserves, except broken ore in stopes amounting to about 60,000 tons. A study of the plans, prior to reopening the mine in 1952, showed 1,450 lineal feet of ore (at 1952 prices) opened up by drifting on the 300-foot and 500- foot levels. It is clear that no comprehensive picture of the structure was had at this time. The orebodies were considered to be very irregular pods scattered through masses of quartzite-carbonate in a sheared zone about 800 feet wide. In some way the ore was believed to be related to the tuff-slate contact zone. With this picture it was impossible to make a reasonable ore estimate or even gauge the tonnage potentialities with any feeling of reliability."

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

It also shows the involvement of the plant in the siting of a heavy water production facility in Cape Breton. The paper concludes with an outline of the new installations which the Nova Scotia Power Commission has undertaken as an extension to the Seaboard Plant.

INTRODUCTION THE PURPOSE of this article on methane is to present the simple basic facts of the characteristics, detection, occurrence, and control of this natural gas in metal mines, so that operators and .safety men may deal with it with some degree of confidence. Fortunately, although methane has been noted at many metal mines throughout Canada, the occurrences usually are small flows of short duration, and the ignitions experienced have, in most cases, had minor consequences. However, methane does present a hazard that can be of serious proportions, and ?any complacent attitude toward this gas that might exist in the minds .of people engaged in underground mining operations should be dispelled when it is ,pointed out that, in Ontario alone, ignitions of this gas have resulted in at least four fatalities, and eight men seriously injured and burned, during the past three years. lt is well-known that liberation of methane can and does .occur suddenly, often in mines where no gas has been found before, and that many ignitions and explosions have occurred in so called non-gassy mines. In view of this, it is apparent that no mine can, with any degree of certainty, be classified as non-gassy. CHARACTERISTICS OF METHANIZ The characteristics of natural gas encountered in most of the Ontario mines indicate that methane is the chief constituent. Methane (CH4), commonly termed 'marsh gas', and by the coal miner 'firedamp', is a colourless, odourless, and non-poisonous gas considerably lighter than air, and is the explosive gas frequently found in coal mines. Its physiological effects, closely resemble those resulting from nitrogen.
