"1. INTRODUCTIONMy talk today will discuss a new development in the thickening of slurries and clarification of waste water - the Enviro-Clear thickener. Several industrial installations of the thickener have been made in North America in the following applications:1.,water clarification in sugar beet processing plants.2.,separation of pregnant liquors from solid wastes following acid leaching in uranium mills3.,clarification of waste water from coal treatment plants as described in a paper in the June 1975 transactions of the SME entitled ""Application and Utilization of the Enviro Clear Thickener in a U.S. Steel Coal Preparation Plant"" by A.A. Terchnik, D.T. King and J.S. Anderson.2. HISTORYThe application of the Enviro-Clear thickener can be traced back to the filing of U.S. Patent 3523889 in 1970 by the inventor F. Eis. The claims of this patent are shown in Slide 1.The new concept was developed for sugar beet processing by the Spreckels Division of Amstar Corporation, and several such thickeners have subsequently been installed in various sugar beet plants. The Enviro-Clear Co. or New York took over the world-wide manufacturing and marketing of the thickener. Experience in the sugar beet industry indicated that the Enviro-Clear thickener volume requirements could be reduced to as low as one tenth that of a conventional type thickener. Various coal samples were supplied by U.S. Steel Research Laboratories for testing. The tests indicated that feed rate loadings of 3 gpm/ft.2 could be obtained by the Enviro-Clear thickener. Such results led to several industrial applications in the coal industry. Subsequently other branches of the mineral processing industry have come to learn of the possibilities of using this thickener. Slide 2 shows a list of commercial Enviro-Clear installations at the end of 1975."

"The operation of an activated charcoal system has five separate unit operations. These unit operations have common points for CIP, CIL and CIS system, which vary widely in application.The unit operations are:a. Absorptionb. Desorption (Stripping)c. Acid Washingd. Reactivatione. Carbon Handling (carbon transportation, sizing, dewatering, etc.)Cost optimization starts with the basic operating parameters (design philosophy) set down at the time of engineering design. These parameters undergo almost immediate change due to site specific ore requirements, throughput changes, operator requirements or reagent availability.Activated charcoal is sometimes viewed as simple, uncomplicated reagent that requires not optimization. To some extent, this statement is true, but under most circumstances, if the time necessary to optimize the use of activated charcoal is available, the effort is rewarded with significant savings. CPL-Carbon Link has embarked upon a program of supplying technical support with its activated charcoal. Several operations in the United States have undertaken to have CPL-Carbon Link do an operational survey to determine if potential savings are possible. CPL-Carbon Link has offered to do these surveys for projects that are clients or simply would like to have CPL-Carbon Link review their operation. The information accumulated by CPLCarbon Link is being used to attempt to fashion industry standards so that a common reference point can be established for activated charcoal usage."

"INTRODUCTIONA beneficiation plant to upgrade earthy iron ores is being installed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, Quebec.The crude ore for the plant will come from the Knob Lake area, located in Northern Quebec, where mining has been in progress since 1954.Some 170 million tons of ""direct 11 ores have been mined and shipped in the past eighteen years, with an overall silica content of 7 to 8 percent. No beneficiation - except the reduction of the top size to about 2 inches - took place during this period, but extensive research work has been carried out, in order to find a feasible process.Since “washing"", gravity separation, roasting and magnetic separation experiments did not indicate positive enough results, flotation was tried and found to be feasible.The beneficiation complex being installed will consist of grinding, flotation, dewatering - i.e.: thickening, filtering and drying - balling feed preparation, and agglomeration - i.e.: balling and induration.This process will result in a product superior to the ""direct shipping"" ores and will also expand the ore reserves by allowing material with a higher silica content to be utilized.THE OREThe Knob Lake ores are grouped by mineralogical composition and by grade.BLUE ORES, representing roughly two thirds of the reserves, carry their iron content mostly in the form of massive, blue hematite and martite.YELLOW ORES, about one sixth of the reserves, have predominantly hydrated iron oxides as the iron bearing minerals.RED ORES, the other sixth of the reserves, carry the iron mostly in the form of red hematite.The gangue in all ores is mainly quartz, but aluminum oxides and hydroxides are also present, particularly in the red ores."

"In early 2000, CANMET-MMSL was engaged by the Ontario Ministry of Labour (OMOL) to conduct an international study of the practices, in several key mining jurisdictions, of determining the criteria that are used to decide when the wire ropes used in mine hoisting are to be retired from service. Subsequently, the author visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the United States, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included.The report that resulted included, among other sections: (1) the history of wire ropes and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements regarding safety factors; (4) a review of the various operations and their potential future development; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) potential future developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; and (7) recommendations.Subsequently, the report was issued by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by CANMETMMSL. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study."

The literature in this field and the practical activity record that a method, respectively the technology used for an underground mining work have many components which, in order to be applied, demand that for each of the parameters that describe the environment of the mining work and that influence the chosing of that method and that technology of execution, must have values in an interval well determined. There are situations when one or many parameters of the set of parameters that describe the environment of the mining work, can modify its values, and, as a result, one or more components of the methods or technology cannot be applied anymore, making necessary a replacement of their values. The information offered by this graphical-analytical model allow the determination of optimum solutions for the process of digging of the underground mining work and thus it will result the incresing of the technical-economical efficiency of the digging process and, also the increasing of the quality of the underground mining work.

"Present day ferrochrome demand is on the rise, as more steel products require this material as an alloying element. It is projected that the stainless steel demands will grow by about 6% per year to 2020; as such, the supply and demand for ferrochrome appears promising. Chromite is the only economical source of chromium, which is commonly upgraded by gravity techniques and used to produce ferrochrome. The gravity separation methods are not able to treat particles finer than 0.1 mm efficiently. Therefore, in processing chromite ore, a large quantity of fine tailings; some 25% of the mineral values have been reported as lost in slimes during processing. The chromite content of these tailings is typically 10-20% Cr2O3 and accumulates into a large stockpile/pond. A chromite concentrator project in Canada, considers a cut-off grade of 20% Cr2O3. This indicates further processing might be required to recover chromite from low-grade stockpile when the high-grade deposits are depleted. Low-grade ores normally indicates disseminated chromite ores with low liberation and consequently fine comminution. This paper reviews the techniques for treating chromite from fine material and provides some examples of successful operations in fine chromite recovery. Beneficiation techniques for fine particles include gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation. Several case studies are presented here that used one of the aforementioned methods or a combination of them.INTRODUCTIONChromium is one of the essential element and important material for production of ferrochrome alloys and special steel. Chromium occurs as chromium spinel, a complex mineral with chemical composition of (Fe, Mg) O (Cr, Al, Fe)2 . Chromite ore is exclusively found in ultramafic igneous rocks. Major associated gangue minerals are talc, quartz, serpentine and iron oxides.Chromite is a heavy mineral, with a specific gravity in the range of 4-5, relative to associated gangue minerals in a chromite ore, which makes gravity concentration a suitable process. This is generally true for coarse particles, ranging from 1 mm to 100 mm. Typically, the ore is prepared by crushing (and grinding if necessary) to a suitable size and the material is sized for the appropriate beneficiation techniques. It is common to use heavy medium separation (e.g. dense media drums, dense media cyclones, or Dyna Whirlpool) to treat coarse size and intermediate size particles (1 – 100 mm). Intermediate and fine particles (20 – 0.1 mm) could be treated by jigs. Spirals, shaking table, sluices, and Reichert cones can upgrade fine particles. Figure 1 shows a typical chromite beneficiation process flowsheet. As can be seen, it consists of three major sections: feed preparation (crushing, screening), de-sliming, and concentration. Beneficiation recoveries range from 80 to 85%, although the ratio of upgrading is only 2 to 3."

"Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business (CPB) is comprised of Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO) in Northern Ontario, Canada’s only operating phosphate mine, and Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO) in Alberta, which manufactures the fertilizer from KPO’s concentrate.Production from KPO’s South Pit commenced in 2009 and introduced contaminant problems: high aluminium from crandallite and kaolinite clays. These issues caused a drastic decrease in P2O5 recovery and throughput in both plants. KPO attempted to reduce Al clays by means of aggressive desliming. Meanwhile RPO experienced high amounts of dissolved metals in their feed that are detrimental to fertilizer production.This paper covers the mineralogy of the problem, its impact on contaminant separation at KPO, on RPO’s process and on Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business as a whole.Potential solutions to the problem are discussed and analysed, including a process change to deslime high aluminium streams more aggressively and high grade ore flotation, which is atypical at KPO. The latter is a demonstration of the value of communication between the concentrator and the client, as KPO accepted a recovery loss and increased production costs in order to increase overall CPB profits. General lessons learned are discussed, followed by a section on ore blending.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of the Kapuskasing phosphate deposit has been known since the 1970s, it’s only since 1999 that Agrium has been operating the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO). The mine consists of three major pits (Center, North and South) from which a mining contractor hauls the apatite ore to the Agrium concentrator. The beneficiation plant processes the ore, separating contaminants such as Fe, Mg and Al which are detrimental to its client, Agrium’s Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO). The KPO concentrate is finally thickened, filtered and dried before being shipped by rail to RPO.At the Redwater plant, the KPO concentrate is added to a sulfuric acid solution in an attack tank, to create a phosphoric acid solution and gypsum:"

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. It is possible to selectively mine an orebody by combining the use of the SSW probe with any bulk mining methods as well as narrow vein exploitations. In other words, thanks to the use of the SSW probe, mining operators will be able to reduce and control dilution that is generally associated to every mining operation. Already, quick and substantial savings have been obtained. Falconbridge mines have demonstrated in Sudbury and Raglan operations, that the SSW probe can log nickel, copper and iron sulphides in blast holes. They have raised the grade and reduced dilution by outlining the limits of the ore zones before selectively loading explosives in the blast holes. By lowering the probe in a blast hole, a profile of the ore content is instantly measured and recorded. Logging cored diamond drill holes at the mine have demonstrated that the ore content (nickel, copper, cobalt, PGM) as assayed is proportional to the intensity of the probe?s electromagnetic response (EM), probably because the nickel / pyrrhotite ratio is uniform within a given orebody. The probe also measures the intrinsic conductivity of the sulphides and the percentage of magnetite. All probe readings are displayed and automatically stored at a 10-cm interval within the same reading unit. A 30-meter blast hole takes less than 2 minutes to survey. The whole instrument is light (12 kg) and very simple to use. One operator can carry the SSW system and survey either down or up-holes. The probe works from ?40°C to +50°C. Plotting the measurements of the SSW probe in blast holes (2-3-4-6-10 inches in diameter) before blasting allows to determine the exact shape of the orebody within the waste rock and uneconomic low-grade ore. Thus, only the portion of the holes that contains ore is blasted. The dilution is then much reduced and, by leaving the waste and low-grade ore in place, the mine saves on transportation, blasting, crushing, backfilling, milling, etc. Thousands of dollars are thus saved. Some savings may also be achieved during the development of stopes by guiding development drifts and by replacing diamond drilling by percussion drilling. In some circumstances, when the probe shows that some of the rich ore was not drilled-off, additional blast holes will allow to recover pockets of rich ore that otherwise would have been abandoned in the walls of a stope.

Abstract Due to the blocking nature at the crusher station, straightforward application of queuing theory cannot give realistic results on the performance of a shovel-truck-crusher system. A new queuing network-based model has been developed in which, the crusher station is formulated into an open queuing network and the whole shovel-truck-crusher system into a closed queuing network with the crusher station as a special server. To fully account for the influence of blocking, Monte Carlo simulation is first used to obtain the performance parameters of the open queuing network for the crusher station. The closed queuing network for the entire system is solved by applying the Extended Summation Method (ESUM), in which the crusher server is described by the simulation results. The model has been applied to the Yuanbaoshan open-pit coal mine to analyze its shovel-truck-crusher system and to improve its efficiency. Results indicate that the blocking at the crusher is an important factor affecting the crusher output and in turn the efficiency of the whole system, and prove that the model can realistically describe the behavior of such systems.

"The technical and economic feasibility or re-processing hundreds of millions of tons of tailings in a number of historic gold tailings dams in the Witwatersrand area of South Africa is being investigated. The objective is to recover uranium and residual gold from the tailings, as well as to oxidize the sulphides to eliminate long term environmental liabilities associated with acid mine drainage. The tailings from the re-processing plant will be re-deposited in a new area far from urbanization, allowing for the rehabilitation of the real estate currently occupied by these historic tailings.The first step in the process involves a mild-regrind and mild acid leach of the tailings (pH 2.5 to 3.0) to dissolve up to 40% of the uranium. This uranium is recovered directly from the pulp by resin in pulp (RIP) with a strong base resin. The RIP tails are then treated by flotation to recover a rougher pyrite concentrate, and flotation tailings that are discarded. The rougher concentrate is cleaned to produce a final pyrite concentrate and cleaner scavenger tailings, and the pyrite concentrate is oxidized in an autoclave to leach uranium and generate acid. The autoclave discharge is combined with the cleaner scavenger tails, and the acid and ferric ions generated in the autoclave are used to leach more uranium and oxidize more sulphide in the cleaner tails. The product from the concentrate leach circuit is processed by resin in pulp for uranium recovery, followed by neutralization, cyanidation and carbon in pulp for gold recovery.The rougher float tails may be further treated to recover gold that was not recovered in flotation, but which had been liberated from the old dumps by natural oxidation of some of the pyrite over many decades. The float tails would be neutralized and treated by cyanidation and CIL to recover this liberated gold.All parts of the flowsheet have been extensively tested in the laboratory, and the critical elements of flotation, pressure oxidation and resin in pulp have been demonstrated in pilot plants. The results of the hydrometallurgical investigations are presented here."

Abstract - The Horne mine was truly a world class Cu and Au deposit. Between 1927 and 1989, it produced some 260 t of Au and 1.13 Mt of Cu from 53.7 Mt of ore that averaged 2.22% Cu, 6.1 g/t Au and 13 g/t Ag. The total value of Au and Cu production from the Horne deposit at metal prices of US$300/oz Au and US$1.00/lb Cu is an outstanding US$5.2 billion. The Horne mine was also a company builder. After optioning the property from Ed Horne (Tremoy Syndicate) in 1922, the Thomson-Chadbourne Syndicate discovered the deposit in 1923 and quickly grew to become Noranda, one of the world’s premier mining companies. This discovery fuelled exploration and, along with subsequent discoveries in the Val d’Or-Cadillac camps, led to the "economic development" of northwestern Quebec. The Horne deposit influenced and continues to influence genetic models for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Early observations at Horne contributed to an epigenetic replacement theory for VMS deposits. The most recent genetic model for the Horne, invoking sub-seafloor sulfide replacement of silicified and sericitized volcaniclastic host rocks within a graben, has subsequently been proposed for another giant VMS deposit, the Kidd Creek mine. The Horne and Kidd Creek deposits show many similarities, such as localization within synvolcanic grabens, long-lived hydrothermal activity uninterrupted by volcanism, sub-seafloor replacement sulfides, stacked sulfide lenses, zone refining, silicified footwall rocks characterized by high positive ?18O values, and association with FIII rhyolites. Notable differences between the two deposits include the lack of andesitic, basaltic or komatiitic flows at Horne, different inferred water depths, high Au content at Horne versus negligible Au, but sub-economic to economic concentrations of Sn, In and Cd at Kidd Creek.

Sulphide concentrates may exhibit self-heating to various degrees during storage or shipping, the worst cases presenting a serious hazard from fire and SO2 emission. Based on measurements of heating rates on a wide variety of concentrate samples in a special apparatus, combined with field experience, a methodology has been developed which allows concentrates to be rated for their heating potential. This has proven to be very useful in practice, for example, in deciding on the need to take preventive measures. Oxidation under ambient conditions in the presence of moisture initiates heating locally within a stockpile. In the case of highly active materials, such as those that contain abundant pyrrhotite, heating may progress through three stages to temperatures well above 500°C. However, most concentrates show little or no propensity to self-heat. Heating rates were used to estimate values of the heat output, or self-heating capacity (in joules per gram), which sustains the process at each stage. Thermal data from differential scanning calorimetry are also reported. Variables which affect self-heating are discussed and an actual case of heating control on a stockpile by covering is described. A simple apparatus which can be used to simulate stockpiling conditions has been tested successfully and is proposed as a convenient test system.

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

"Introduction The Brenda dust collection system was originally designed to handle air at the 5000 ft. elevation with less than 1 grain of dust per cubic feet of air handled. "Studies have shown that there is a correlation between commissioning and start-up time, i.e. time to reach full plant design capacity, and the degree of innovation and technical/engineering uncertainty in the project design. The paper describes the types of start-up curves for plants according to the level of technology or uncertainty in the process design. The need to properly describe and understand the commissioning and start-up time is examined using these curves and the importance on project success is highlighted. A number of case histories of recent mining and metallurgical projects are also reviewed. Finally, the paper reviews how to better assess the level of start-up uncertainty associated with a project and makes suggestions for decreasing the commissioning time due to technological risk.INTRODUCTIOThe start-up of a new mining and metallurgical facility, a much anticipated event, is a critical step in the life of such a project. Achieving a successful start-up and reaching the design capacity on-time requires careful planning, a thorough understanding of the key technological and engineering components involved and a well-trained and adequatelystaffed start-up crew. In this paper, some of the aspects related to start-up of a mining/metallurgical project will be explored, and in particular, the impact of the technology component will be examined. In order to illustrate this, a number of case histories based on recent mining and metallurgical projects will be discussed. Ways of assessing and understanding the uncertainty associated with technological issues related to start-up of a mining and metallurgical plant will also be examined.The history on mining and metallurgy is full of success stories of great mines and mills that are now considered “company makers” (well known examples of such successes include the Horne mine for Noranda which had a 1 year start-up in 1926-27, the Dome mine for Placer Dome, the Grasberg deposit for FMI in Indonesia). Less well documented are specific studies relating to plant start-ups and what constitutes a success or a failure, however there are a few notable references in the literature and these will be reviewed."
