Base metal skarns have provided most of South KoreaÆs Pb-Zn production since the end of the Korean War, with the bulk of production coming from the Yeonwha group of mines. Currently only the Kumho Zn-Pb mine remains in production, while magnetite skarns are mined as iron ore at the old Yomisan and Ulsan base metal deposits. Base metal skarns within Korea fall into two groups; those hosted in Cambro-Ordovician limestone sequences, situated mainly in sub-basins in the northeast of the peninsula and those hosted within carbonate volcaniclastics of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, in the southeast. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by sphalerite, lesser galena, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, with subordinate chalcopyrite and molybdenite with Ag-Co credits. Skarns are composed of pyroxene-clinopyroxene-garnet-carbonate-quartz and magnetite, grading into silica-chlorite hornfels. Most of the significant deposits display both pipe-like and stratabound morphology. In the Hwanggang district, a zoned distribution of Ordovician carbonate hosted, polymetallic Mo-W and Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag base metal deposits is observed around the margin of a Cretaceous granite intrusion. Similar polymetallic zoning is recognised in the Sangdong district, where deposits include Sangdong (W), Abisan (Au-As) and Yomisan Northwest (Zn-Mo) and Yomisan Southeast (Zn-Cu-Co), hosted in Ordovician carbonates in proximity to Cretaceous quartz porphyry intrusives. The Taebaeksan district hosts the largest deposits at the Yeonwha group of mines. Although production ceased in 1993, significant resources remain, hosted in Ordovician limestone and dolomite that have been intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry dykes. Deposits in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin consist of bedding concordant, vertically stacked base metal skarn mineralisation at several stratigraphic horizons, connected by carbonate-base metal veins with a pipe-like geometry. Evidence such as massive sulphide layers and restricted proximal carbonates suggest mineralisation was initially partly syn-depositional, with both base metals and carbonate venting onto a lake floor, being reconstituted to skarns by later magmatic activity. Skarn mineralisation is universally closely associated with the Cretaceous Bulgugsa Series acid intrusive activity. A common intrusive-structural relationship is recognised at some deposits, with bedding plane and imbricate thrust faulting, introducing felsic intrusives as sills. These intrusions probably introduced the base metals, carbonate, boron, heat and silica, which metasomatically reconstituted the carbonate lithologies to form skarn assemblages. The Korean base metal skarn deposits are regarded as Zn-Pb chimney-manto skarns and display similarities to the Mexican manto type deposits.

QueenslandÆs new safety legislation for metalliferous and coal mining (Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, together with the Regulations) came into effect on 16 March 2001. The legislation places clear obligations on mine owners, operators and workers to have a safe place of work and to manage risks to safety and health. It also places obligations on contractors, designers and providers of services. The legislation is non-prescriptive in that it states what outcomes must be achieved and not what must be done. The key issue is that the risk of injury to people must be at an acceptable level. The legislation creates a Mines Inspectorate with powers of inspection and audit of mines, their safety management systems and the management of risks. Auditing of the risk management process is carried out against standard risk management techniques and directives for corrective action may be issued when audits reveal non-compliance or unacceptable levels of risk.

Since the earliest recorded prospecting of the 1860's mineral exploration and mining in Fiordland has been discouraged by the formidable physical difficulties presented by its isolation, extremely rugged relief, treacherous coastal waters and generally unfavourable weather conditions. Government assistance was often sought by the miners and prospectors but little, if any, support or encouragement was received after the initial period. During the 1840's decorative marble was quarried at Caswell and Dusky Sounds. A prospector discovered and attempted to mine copper sulphides to the north of Dusky Sound (Parks Mineral Beds) and near Mt Solitary. A small Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, Au bearing quartz reef was discovered and driven on in the granite coast line of Preservation Inlet (Bradshaws Reef) and the ore roasted on site. Alluvial and quartz lode gold was discovered at Preservation Inlet in the 1890's and led to the recorded recovery of 11 000 oz of mainly lode gold. Falloff in grades with depth, thinning and splitting of the reefs and the high mining costs at this location led to a virtual abandonment of the field by 1906. In the late 1950's and early 1960's the geology of Fiordland was mapped by the Geological Survey at 1:250 000 scale, but field work was largely confined to the shore lines of the coast and fiords. In view of the physical difficulties it is not surprising that mineral exploration and mining up to 1970 was limited to the scant attention outlined above.

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. Laboratory tests were conducted to study the effects of thrust or pull-down force and rotary speed on the vibration signatures of a particular drill in a known rock type, and to determine how the vibration signatures could be used to assess bit wear. The vibration signatures were analysed using a Wavelet Transform analysis technique, which decomposes the signals in multi-bands of frequency and presents the results simultaneously in time and frequency domain. Results show that as the bit wears, large fluctuations in amplitudes in the high frequency ranges occur, and prominent peaks in the low frequency ranges were observed for a worn bit. The Wavelet Transform technique provides an appropriate and effective metrics for monitoring and evaluating the state of wear as drilling progresses through the post-processing of wavelet coefficients. This study provides a basis for the development of an on-line detection technique of bit wear in rock drilling through Wavelet Transform technique or time-frequency analysis that can be used in real time.

Mass mining methods have become the mining industry’s preferred way of extracting most of the world’s most important metal and mineral commodities. Given the rapidly increasing global demand for commodities, the requirement to increase the contribution of some of these (eg copper and gold) from underground sources also continues to grow. In the case of copper this contribution is needed by a number of major producers to supplement production from their ageing deep open pits. Satisfying this increased demand will require the design, construction and operation of more effective, higher capacity and larger scale mines which, in turn, will require enhanced mass underground mining techniques such as block caving (BC), panel caving (PC) and sublevel caving (SLC).It is now widely accepted that future discoveries of orebodies, which will be developed using these methods, are almost certainly to be much deeper than the deposits presently being mined in this way and made more challenging because of the likelihood that the associated grades may be much lower than currently mined. The design and mining of future large-scale cave mines (supercaves) will become crucial in order to extract full value from such deposits. An essential prerequisite of this will be a much improved knowledge of the deposit, ie Total Deposit Knowledge. In this context, Total Deposit Knowledge is the characterisation of the ore deposit and its surrounds at all scales and includes; rock type (lithology), the spatial orientation of a range of geological features or discontinuities, rock mass fabric knowledge, metal grade and distribution data, geometallurgical data (including alteration), geo-hydrology, permeability and porosity. This is the information that will be used, as now, to delineate geological and geotechnical domains and construct models, but with outcomes superior to those presently available. From this information better-informed feasibility study design decisions and performance predictions must be made. In summary more geological information and analysis is required and this needs to be aligned to potential mining and processing requirements much earlier in the project than commonly occurs.

The operating environment for mine managers continuously evolves and effective mine managers must be flexible and adaptive to meet challenges. Governance and regulation constantly change in an environment of commodity cycles and finite resources. This increases pressure on the economic return achieved by the operation. As such, effective mine managers must be aware of and manage the operating environment û the broader, issues-based environment not just the immediate day-to-day responsibility of mine managing. This includes delivering on safety, community and environmental priorities. At Rio Tinto Aluminium, part of managing the business is via investment in the area of social partnerships to engage employees and the broader community in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs commitment to sustainability. The Future Reef partnership entered with the Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation in 2005 forms an important part of Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs climate change strategy. This four-year, A$1 million investment funds programmes looking at the effect of ocean acidification on the Great Barrier Reef. These may be found with goethite through mechanisms including direct substitution or coprecipitation of nanocrystalline phases. Understanding P incorporation in goethite has significant implications for Australia’s iron ore industry as it lowers their commodity value. The current study tests a novel low-temperature technique to extract P impurities from synthetic goethite phases under O2-free ambient conditions by utilising Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation of goethite on the geochemical behaviour (mobility and speciation) of co-associated P. To achieve this, we tracked changes in labile P (aqueous and 1M NaOH extractable) concentrations over time in goethite suspensions which were reacted with Fe(II)aq for 14 days under circumneutral pH conditions and room temperature conditions. Temporal changes in Fe mineralogy were investigated via synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Iron K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy confirmed goethite as the only mineral phase in P-free treatments while goethite (~86 per cent) and feroxyhyte (~14 per cent) were the main phases in 1.0 per cent P-containing treatments after a 14- day reaction with Fe(II)aq. According to our findings, the treatment of P-goethite with Fe(II) for a duration of 7–14 days, followed by a 24-hour extraction of the reacted solids using 1M NaOH, results in the removal of approximately 79.5 per cent of the initial P content. This removal encompasses both the aqueous fraction (~4.5 per cent) and the surface adsorbed fraction (~75 per cent) from the 1 per cent P-bearing mineral phase. Notably, this approach demonstrates an improvement in P extractability, with approximately a 10 per cent increase compared to the 1 per cent P-goethite sample that was not reacted with Fe(II).

Prospecting ice on the Moon necessitates drilling systems to obtain subsurface samples and measure the composition of ice deposits. Landers and rovers equipped with drilling equipment are essential for analysing ice and subsurface resources located at the Moon’s poles. These devices must be small, lightweight, low-power, highly efficient, and high-performance units to function properly in the extreme conditions of the lunar environment. Researchers have developed a prototype drilling apparatus capable of operating in atmospheric and cold environments. A newly developed drilling system in Korea, capable of performing not only sampling but also subsurface investigation, is introduced.

Radar monitors are now widely used in surface mining for monitoring slope deformations and predicting failure events. Their introduction has facilitated better management of risk associated with slope failure during mining and therefore protection of personnel and equipment. However, a wellrecognised problem is that radar monitors only measure deformation directed towards the detector (line-of-sight bias). This bias can lead to misinterpretation of deformation size, rate and failure mechanism, and therefore miscalculation of failure volume, which can significantly impact safety and productivity. This paper presents recently completed research and field trials into the feasibility of using low cost vision systems to mitigate this issue. It has been demonstrated that by integrating a computer vision system with an existing slope monitor, high precision tracking of features in the field of view can be performed. Combined with assumptions on the deformation characteristics, the true 3D deformation vector can be estimated. The applicability of using this technique for monitoring iron ore mine slopes is discussed.

Particles are by far the easiest objects to simulate, because their dynamics is simple. Determining the motion of particles and their interaction, a wide variety of deformable structures can be constructed by connecting particles that have mass, position, and velocity, and that respond to forces. Starting from this simple idea we have derived what we call the particle-lattice method for the solutions of boundary value problems of deformation and fracture of solid mass. The problem of rock breaking by blasting operations as well as fracture and flow of rocks fragments involve momentum transfer between solid and fluid; gas flow and reactive mass transfer. In this paper we outline the method and describe briefly the salient features of the algorithm. We derive relationships between the contact properties for the discrete model and the properties of the underlying continuum and fluid flow coupling procedure. Finally we illustrate the potential of the method by means of example solutions related to the dynamic fracture and flow in jointed rock by blasting.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017. Block caving is an important mining method for the future economic exploitation of large, low-grade, steeply dipping orebodies. While block caving is not a new method, there are still many unknowns surrounding the mechanics driving the process, particularly as we are forced into deeper, higher-stressed and stronger ore deposits. The caving industry is desperate to provide some explanation behind the myths of caving geomechanics to better predict and manage current caves and caves of the future. Large amounts of data are collected to help understand caving, but it is not fully utilised and current approaches for analysing the data are capacity limited. The application of virtual reality and scientific visualisation (VRSV) technology to visualise and analyse block caving is a critical future component in the assessment toolbox. VRSV enables large, complex, multidimensional data sets to be analysed and the power of human visual problem solving processes to be utilised. Block caving is a complex system and needs to be analysed as a system, rather than looking at individual factors one at a time. A software module has been developed at UNSW Australia for use in the advanced visualisation interactive environment for analysis of the block cave mining system (BCMS). This fully immersive, 3D virtual assessment tool shows exciting potential and is used to analyse the BCMS with a close linkage to time (ie the chronological occurrence of data). This tool will enable a true investigation into the cause and effect relations within the BCMS. Current research is investigating Newcrest Mining Limited’s Ridgeway Deeps operation and is aiming to turn some of the cause/effect relationships into increased geomechanics understanding to provide improvements to ground control management. PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of New Orleans-based Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold of New Orleans, operates a large mining complex on the Western half of the Island of New Guinea in Tembagapura, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The IOZ (Intermediate Ore Zone) mine, one of the underground orebodies, is mined by block caving. The area affected by the cave collects a large quantity of rain and ground waters mixing with fine rock particles. The mixture, commonly called æwet muckÆ, sometimes spills into drawpoints and makes the working environment hazardous to the loader operators. Wet muck is observed in an increasing number of drawpoints in the IOZ mine and remote LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) technology has been implemented to handle the ore. The driving force for this automation project has been the safety of the loader operators. The system has been developed mainly in-house and incorporates state-of-the-art features. Up to eight remote loaders and nine rock breakers are controlled from an underground control room located approximately 400 metres from the active extraction panels. The two underground crushers and nine conveyor feeders are also operated remotely from an adjacent control room. The development of FreeportÆs remote system has taken time and considerable effort. Not only the success of the IOZ mine was at stake but also the fulfillment of environmental commitments pertaining to the mill tailings. Approximately eight per cent of the mill feed must come from underground skarn deposits to neutralise the acid-generating tailings generated by the huge Grasberg open pit ores.

Acid mine drainage is a serious environmental problem caused by the oxidation of sulfide minerals responsible for highly acidic, sulfate and metals-rich drainage. Several methods of mine waste management have been developed that reduce liabilities on environment. Layered co-mingling of waste rock with compacted tailings, covers with capillary barriers effect, and co-disposal of waste rock and tailings are these new methods which are used to reduce the formation of acid mine drainage. These methods shield waste rock dumps from oxygen. These techniques could prevent oxidation reaction. In this study, alkaline industrial wastes are used with acid generating tailings to inhibit acid mine drainage. The alkaline wastes selected are cement kiln dust (CKD) and red mud bauxite (RMB). These alkaline materials are used to keep neutral conditions in the fine material layer and to inhibit the metabolic activity of Thiobacillus ferroxidans which catalyses the oxidation of sulfide minerals. A series of timed static leaching tests were performed by reacting samples of mine tailings with two, five and ten per cent alkaline material in order to characterise geochemical balance between liquid and solid phases. Column tests have been set up with oxidised tailings, waste rock, CKD, and RMB. Column tests have been carried out to simulate layered co-mingling, covers, liners, and co-disposal of waste rock and tailings. Column leach tests were conducted in order to investigate the long-term neutralisation potential of alkaline materials and the drainage water quality. Bacteria counting were performed on each sample after testing. The results obtained show that the addition of alkaline materials permit the retention of near neutral conditions in the fine material layer, thus increasing water quality and preventing bacteria development. In fact, the pH results show that the use of five per cent, ten per cent CKD or ten per cent of a mixture of CKD and RMB permit the retention of neutral pH conditions in the reactive layer. At these percent rates, the concentrations of Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, and SO4 in solution are significantly reduced compared to those obtained with the tailings only. In presence of waste rock, the relative position of the fine material layer is important. When the fine material layer overlaying reactive waste rock is composted of reactive tailings with ten per cent CKD and ten per cent (CKD:RMB), a delay was observed before achievement of near neutral pH. The neutral pH conditions remain stable over time. The mixture of CKD and RMB provides a better short-term neutralisation than the use of CKD alone. The use of alkaline materials is beneficial in order to reduce the concentrations of Fe and other metals such as Cu and Zn as well as the number of viable bacteria. The use of ten per cent RMB alone does not involve the neutralisation of reactive tailings. In the cases where the fine-grained layer are below or mixed with the waste rocks, the near neutral pH values are directly reached with ten per cent CKD. However, the pH values decrease rapidly and the number of viable bacteria increases.

An integral part of the Brisbane Suburban Railway Electrification involved the relining, refurbishment and track lowering in the Roma Street, Brunswick Street and Gloucester Street double track tunnels. The design and the construction procedures had to satisfy the Queensland Railways electrification clearance and track standards and the requirements of maintaining track services through the tunnels during work. Refurbishing of the tunnel linings was carried out to extend the life of the tunnels.

Commonly held ideas about effective training have long emphasised the importance of realism. Realistic training builds better experience among the trainees and a better perspective on the training material, making training more effective. While great strides have been made in this realm for mine safety and mine rescue training there are still areas that can be improved. One possible area is the expanded use of a mine fire simulation program where the migration of gases and smoke can be realistically displayed in an emergency, and outcomes varied as different conditions are being simulated. The use of mine fire simulation software potentially allows for the creation of more realistic scenarios in that smoke advance rates can be measured and recreated in evacuation scenarios, or that gas readings in mine rescue training can be dynamically and realistically changed to show the effect that time has on the fire scenario.CITATION:Slaughter, C and Tien, J C, 2015. Compact and field portable infrared spectrometers have been increasingly used over the past few years by an exploration industry constantly searching for a technological edge and the ability to more accurately and rapidly assess project areas. In particular, this technology allows large amounts of data to be rapidly collected on-site and sample mineralogy, mineral crystallinity and mineral composition to be quickly assessed. In recent years, short wave infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectroscopy has proved useful in a wide range of geological environments and at various stages of exploration programs, from grass roots reconnaissance through drilling programs and resource evaluation. Unfortunately these data have frequently been analysed and interpreted in isolation using time consuming data analysis techniques removed from the realities of a fast moving exploration industry. This paper presents new analysis techniques which allow these data to be efficiently integrated in the exploration program. Although SWIR data contain a wealth of mineral information it is impractical to use this information in its raw form. A more effective approach involves the extraction of key characteristics of these data (ie mineralogy, mineral composition and crystallinity) as numerical values, and the integration of this ædigital mineralogyÆ with more conventional exploration datasets (eg geochemistry, coordinate data, etc). This paper demonstrates that the integrated analysis of sound geological observations, geochemical, spatial and spectral data can quickly lead to a greater understanding of the nature and distribution of target mineralisation. As a first step, software driven pattern matching routines enable the identification of the major clay mineral species in a series of samples (eg kaolinite, montmorillonite and sericite). This allows the major alteration facies and their spatial distribution to be identified. Quantification of diagnostic absorption feature characteristics then allows more accurate determinations of mineralogy to be made (eg mineral composition and crystallinity). Examples of the application of SWIR analysis for alteration mapping from selected porphyry and epithermal systems from around the Pacific Rim are discussed. The data presented are derived from a variety of locations and sample types including drill core, ridge and spur rock chip samples, soil samples and geochemical pulps. In these large alteration systems, the spectral data can be used to describe and map the distribution of various alteration facies as many of these are characterised by clay and phyllosilicate mineral assemblages and are detected by SWIR analysis (eg smectite, chlorite, biotite, illite, muscovite, kaolinite, dickite, pyrophyllite, alunite, etc). In addition, the ability to evaluate even subtle trends in mineral crystallinity and composition is often vital in these systems when looking for vectors towards higher temperature parts of the system. In addition to detailed evaluation of mineralogy, the integration of digital mineralogy data with geochemical data leads to the ability to describe not only geochemically anomalous intersections or regions but also to recognise associations between subtle changes in mineralogy and target mineralisation. This is often important because understanding these mineralogical associations can lead to more accurate targeting and rapid assessment of the project.

"The mine geologist’s role in classifying ore from waste during grade control represents a critical link in the mining value chain. Any improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate (thus reduction in misclassification) which can be delivered by the mine geologist represents a value proposition. Improvement achieved without additional operating cost (for example extra drilling and sampling) will directly and immediately add value to the mining operation and therefore clearly must be pursued. Such improvement may be leveraged from existing resource drilling data which are typically less numerous but better quality than the grade control data. They are usually excluded from grade control estimates (termed the ‘base case’ approach here) because of the differences in quality.Various specialised geostatistical tools are available to account for differences in precision and accuracy between data sources during spatial estimation. This paper uses a conditional simulation (CS) case study to assess the benefit of integrating resource data into grade control estimates through ordinary kriging (OK) of pooled data sets, cokriging (CK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME) when the grade control data are:unbiased but increasingly imprecisebiased and increasingly imprecise. The premise assumed is that the resource data are unbiased and precise.The paper demonstrates that, if appropriately handled, resource data may be used to improve grade control estimates and thus improve ore/waste selection success without additional operating cost. Where grade control data are imprecise but unbiased it is recommended to integrate resource data using OKVME. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations and improves the grade control estimation precision compared to the base case; it consequently provides an improvement in the grade control selection success rate. If grade control data are associated with significant bias, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case and consequently improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2014. The dilution of blasted ore with cemented backfill materials has been recognised as a significant factor influencing the economics of some underground metalliferous mining operations. Several mechanisms have been identified as possible causes of fill failures. The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of damage as the result of one mechanism, that of production blasting adjacent to bodies of cemented hydraulic fill (CHF). A vibration amplitude transfer function has been developed to model the transmission of blast vibrations from the source, through ore, across the ore to CHF interface and into the CHF mass. The model may be applied in the near field. The model has permitted estimation of vibration amplitude at a point in a CHF mass, to which damage criteria may be applied. A number of assumptions and simplifications have been made to render the problem relatively tractable. Ore and CHF material characteristics recorded by a number of authors were utilised to formulate preliminary damage estimations. A simple application of the amplitude transfer model indicated that a zone of plastically deformed CHF would be produced, and would extend to a distance of approximately 0.5 metres from the interface into the CHF. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted, that indicated that the zone of plastic deformation would be more extensive given appropriate conditions. Recommendations for further model development and future laboratory and field investigations have been made.
