This paper discusses the requirements for a successful simulation modelling study, and the steps involved in the modelling process. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation are described, and a case study highlights how not to go about it. Two other case studies, for a decline truck haulage and a block caving production operation, are used to illustrate the types of variables whose impact may be investigated. Typical results are presented to indicate the sorts of presentation styles the author has found useful for conveying study results to project sponsors. Standard spreadsheet charting techniques can be very useful in this respect, but the possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the study team.

Coal bursts involve the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into the mine workings. They are a particular hazard because they typically occur without warning. During the past two years, three US coal miners were killed in two coal bursts, following a six-year period during which there were zero burst fatalities.This paper puts the US experience in the context of worldwide research into coal bursts. It focuses on two major longwall mining coalfields that have struggled with bursts for decades. The Utah experience displays many of the ‘classic’ burst characteristics, including deep cover, strong roof and floor rock, and a direct association between bursts and mining activity. In Colorado, the longwalls of the North Fork Valley (NFV) also work at great depth, but their roof and floor strengths are moderate, and most bursts have occurred during entry development or in headgates, bleeders or other outbye locations. The NFV bursts also are more likely to be associated with geologic structures and large magnitude seismic events. The ERA - Ranger Mine ore processing operation consists of a sulphuric acid leach followed by counter current decantation and solvent extraction circuits. The most expensive unit processing operation at Ranger is the sulphuric acid leach. In 1992 and 1993 changes were made to the operation of the leach circuit. These changes have reduced power and reagent consumption in leach by 30 per cent and 20 per cent respectively with minimal effect on extraction efficiency. The first change was to operate the leach circuits at higher pHs than previously attempted. In addition a cap was placed on the amount of acid added to the leach circuit. Secondly, an on-line pH measurement system was installed and has reduced the variation with time of the leach circuit pHs. Finally, the number of leach vessels used was reduced from ten to seven. This action was undertaken after an examination of the uranium profile and the residence time in the leach circuit from previous years. This paper examines the above changes and assesses their effectiveness on plant performance and costs.

Whilst employed by Dyno Nobel as the Technical Services Engineer û Brisbane, I was asked, as part of a contractual agreement, to look at optimising PioneerÆs blasting process to provide the most effective rock to the new crushing and screening plant. This paper details the preliminary blast designs and practices that have been in use at the quarry and the initial changes made to these designs, and the effect they have had on the excavation and crusher performance.

Rope guides, consisting of ropes spanning between anchor points at the top and bottom of shafts, have frequently been considered as a viable alternative to fixed guides, comprising buntons and guides. However, their design has generally been based on empirically derived rules, arising from European hoisting practice of 50 to 100 years ago. This paper describes a recent technology development project aimed at defining and quantifying the important forces acting on rope guided conveyances, calculating the resulting displacement of the conveyances and assessing whether the displacements are acceptable or not. The paper describes the derivation of aerodynamic force coefficients based on CFD analyses and other significant forces acting on the conveyance and rope system. The conveyance displacements may be calculated using computer simulation of the mechanical system, or approximately using simplified equations given in the paper. Measurements taken to confirm the suitability of the proposed formulation are described. The combination of displacements and assessment of the rope guide system design are proposed, based on the ratio of design clearances and the predicted displacements.

"Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. Historically, the silica content of zinc concentrates treated at Cominco's Trail Operations has been low. Silica in the roaster calcine seldom exceeded 1.5 per cent because of the low silica content of concentrate from Cominco's Pine Point mine. With the shutdown of Pine Point, alternate sources of concentrate were required and it was anticipated that calcines containing greater than two per cent silica (with excursions above three per cent) would have to be treated. Previous experience indicated that the existing leaching circuit could not tolerate such high levels. Therefore, a research program was undertaken to identify the key factors affecting silica precipitation; to compare different process alternatives; and to make recommendations for modifications to the existing plant. A project to modify and upgrade the leaching circuit has now been completed. Calcines with higher silica contents are successfully treated, but the upper limit of the circuit is unknown. The results of the research work will be discussed and the new leaching plant will be described. Recent operating results will also be presented.

This paper summarises the information about current state of eco-environmental problems, geological disaster and mining waste causing during the process of limestone mining. By comparing the management experiences of limestone mines in other countries, management problems in China have been discussed and improved management options have been proposed here. ROES« is a proposed new mining system for underground hard rock mines. Ore is accessed from within a shaft, which is located close to or within the stope, and pitched either vertical or within approximately 20 degrees of vertical. The shaft is designed to exclude personnel entry so production drilling and explosive placement is done using remotely controlled or automated machines. Routine remotely controlled survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope is typically done following each blast. The survey may include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation and geotechnical characteristics. Blastholes are surveyed before placement of explosives. This provides mine operators and engineers with real-time data, allowing them to monitor production performance and risk factors so that they can make rapid changes as required. ROES« is designed to apply to open stoping or sublevel caving situations either in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein orebodies. The technologies developed for ROES« will also have potential applications to block caving operations to reduce the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES« will reduce the amount of stope-associated development by about half and therefore will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at significantly reduced cost. Other savings are expected to flow from the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity. CSIRO and Orica Mining Services are developing the required technology and AMIRA is seeking sponsorship for a project to trial the mining method. This paper details the ROES« method, expected benefits and applications and includes typical stope and mining block designs and design requirements.

Knowing that I was required to make four appearances, and not wanting to be too repetitious, I wrote a rather long speech of which I will deliver various sections at different places, with a common introduction. Specific areas I have addressed are "Exploration", "New sources of minerals and energy", and "Mining and metallurgy of the future".

In 1944 some ten or so pieces of legislation impacted on the mining industry. Today in excess of 80 in one way or another apply to the Northern Territory miner. This paper will look at the nature of the legislation that has been introduced and the reasons for its introduction. During the Second World War the mining of resources such as iron, tin etc for the war effort set the platform for the subsequent expansion of the industry in the post-war years. Thereafter, the change in attitudes over the years that have resulted from a more conscious public and more responsible governments and developers associated with the recognition of the legal rights of others and the threat of litigation, will be traced. With a major review of the Northern Territory Mining Act currently in progress, this paper will view ANZMEC's foreshadowed preference for a National Code and the NT's intent of drawing some commonalities with other states of Australia to achieve this aim. Finally, the questions of over-regulation and whether existing legislation is complete will be addressed. From this it is foreshadowed how legislation may develop during the lead into the 21st century.

Iron ore tailings typically containing 40 to 50 per cent Fe can be beneficiated to iron ore products containing 54 to 60 per cent Fe. The impurities are comprised of clay, quartz, cristabolite and TiO2. Goethite and hematite are also present. At high concentrations of 55–60 wt% solids, the tailings displayed high yield stress and viscosity and cannot be pumped over long distances. Composite additives comprising of NaOH, phosphate-based additives and sodium metasilicate are found to reduce the viscosity and yield stress very significantly by a few orders of magnitude. The yield stress of 100 Pa can be reduced to almost zero. At this state, dilution of the tailings with its process water to 40 per cent solids causes the coarse and high-density iron ore particles to separate from the colloidal fractions located in the supernatant after a few minutes of sedimentation. Separation by decantation produces a sediment with an Fe content of 54 per cent from tailings with 47 per cent Fe. Another tailings sample with 48 per cent Fe was beneficiated to greater than 57 per cent Fe using NaOH-metasilicate-polyphosphate additives and employing an additional washing step. The use of other composite additives, NaOH and polyphosphates, increased beneficiated product Fe content to greater than 60 per cent from the same tailings. With the current iron ore spot price of more than US$180 per tonne, the cost of this treatment process even including a desalination step, if necessary, is relatively insignificant. This study has given tailings an economic value that should be exploited as soon as possible.

Current best management practice requires the placement of a cover onto most types of mine waste including tailings, waste rock and/or spent heap leach rock at closure of the mine. The objectives of a cover system may vary from site to site but generally include dust and erosion control; chemical stabilisation of acid-forming mine waste (through control of oxygen ingress) contaminant release control (through control of infiltration); and/or provision of a growth medium for establishment of sustainable vegetation. In our experience, there has been a general tendency by stakeholders to develop performance criteria for cover systems, which are tied directly to these specific design objectives. In many cases, this practice has led to the development of single, often very conservative, numerical values of cover performance criteria such as ænet percolationÆ, ærate of oxygen ingressÆ and/or æplant density/mixtureÆ. In our opinion, there is a need to develop cover performance criteria on a case-by-case basis and with due consideration of the short-term and long-term impacts on the receiving environment at a particular site. This paper puts forward a methodology for developing site-specific performance criteria for a cover system designed to isolate acid-forming mine waste and to control acid rock drainage. The proposed methodology links the predicted performance of a cover system to groundwater and surface water impacts. This way, the appropriate level of control (of oxygen ingress and/or net percolation) required by the cover system can be determined. A case study is presented that illustrates the application of the methodology proposed in this paper.

Checking the quality of a blast may be considered as subjective. Checking this quality will require measuring objective parameters. One of them is the resulting fragmentation of the blasted product. Numerous fragmentation æmeasuringÆ systems have been developed and marketed, based on image-processing. This presentation of FragScan will illustrate advantages and difficulties when using such a system. FragScan is essentially defending a policy of large and representative sampling. The purpose is to show how fragmentation is discriminating both productivity and profit of quarry operations on a blast-by blast basis. The next step will then be to ædriveÆ the blasting process to reach a æbetterÆ fragmentation. Other applications require the fragmentation as an essential result: this is the case for large boulders used in structure-reinforcement. Several case-studies have shown that FragScan can be used for quality-control, checking size-distribution of the product according to the requirements of the end-user. Only clear thinking about the precise use of such a æmeasurementÆ will further the success of this task.

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. An important feature of the sinter structure was the formation of a perovskite phase (CaTiO3 ) and an increase in the proportion of this phase in the structure as TiO2 levels increase.CITATION:Dehghan-Manshadi, A, Manuel, J, Hapugoda, S, Ware, N and Donskoi, E, 2015. Permanent rock bolts in civil engineering are taken as having to serve their design purpose for at least 50 years. In many projects the design life is specified as greater than 100 years. A review of recent Australian tunnelling projects shows that substantial differences exist in the level of corrosion protection provided for permanent steel shafted rock bolts. This paper reviews the current state of practice and sets out what the authors consider to be appropriate requirements for corrosion protection.

The thermal conductivity of slag is critical for the efficiency of high temperature metallurgical processes such as the smelting reduction of ferroalloys, the ladle refining and the continuous casting mold flux in steelmaking. Experimental determination of slag’s thermal conductivity is fraught with challenges, as seen in yielding data for the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO system that are often inconsistent and widely dispersed. In molten slags of this system, thermal transport occurs via phonons within the network structure. To quantitatively describe thermal conductivity based on the microstructure, hightemperature Raman spectroscopy was employed to measure the silicate tetrahedra Qi (i = 0, 1, 2, 3), with Q4 species inferred from mass balance. This study also integrated molecular dynamics simulations to provide a fundamental understanding of the microstructure units distributions. Machine learning algorithms, especially deep neural networks, were applied to establish the relationship between slag composition and the configuration of tetrahedra. The thermal conductivities were then connected with silicate tetrahedra Qi using an Arrhenius-type formalism. This study sets the stage for extending our findings to more complex, multicomponent slags, enhancing their practical application in industrial processes.

Geometallurgical characterisation of ore deposits is accepted practice in some parts of the mining industry today. Its primary aim is to provide constrained inputs that reflect inherent geological variability and its impact on metallurgical performance for the deposit. Geometallurgy improves project value because it suggests more valuable alternatives for scheduling and processing through an increased knowledge and understanding of the interactions of rock properties and extractive technologies. Lower project cost (both capital and processing) and improved recoveries are the result from closer tailoring of the mining and mineral processing strategies to the characteristics of the resource (Dunham, Vann and Coward, 2011). Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be seen as potential resources and it is argued that fundamental geometallurgical characterisation as applied in ore deposit characterisation should also be applied to planning the retreatment of TSFs. This paper will describe a research project at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Resource Centre assessing if geometallurgical principles and methodologies can successfully be applied to TSFs as they have been to primary deposits. The project is establishing a new standard method of tailings evaluation which will include a 3D spatial model of the tailings resource. Initial domaining of the TSFs was done using principal component analysis followed by k-means cluster analysis based on chemical assays from drill core samples. The subsequent characterisation of the drill core samples has involved chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical profiling, with a range of metallurgical tests being conducted on the samples. This characterisation step is followed by class-based analysis, predictive modelling and process performance domaining with the ultimate objective of establishing a 3D spatial model incorporating geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical performance data. This approach, which takes into account processing performance permits a more realistic (as compared to doing limited chemical assays and metallurgical testing) economic evaluation of the potential of reprocessing the tailings material. It is believed that the approach is generic and can be applied to other TSFs being considered for reprocessing. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore deposits of rare earth elements (REE) in South-East Asia are classified into four types: carbonatite, allanite, ion-adsorption and placer. Occurrences of the carbonatite deposits are confined almost exclusively to the Red River Fault Zone of northern Vietnam. Since the carbonatites contain dominantly REE fluorocarbonates (eg bastnasite) and lesser amounts of monazite, they are rich in light REE but poor in heavy REE. The ion-adsorption type deposits and prospects were found in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The ion-adsorption ores generally show lower REE grades than those of the carbonatite type and placer deposits; however, they could be enriched in HREE, which are more precious and scarce commodities than LREE. The ores consist of weathered granites with a significant amount of ion-exchangeable REE, which are extracted by using a dilute electrolyte solution. The ion-exchangeable REE are likely to be sourced from REE fluorocarbonates, allanite and titanite because these minerals are relatively susceptible to weathering and release REE3+ ions into soil water. In contrast, monazite and xenotime are resistant to chemical weathering and could form placer ores. Placer monazite and xenotime have been processed as by-products of placer Sn, Zr or Ti in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, although the current production is small.CITATION:Sanematsu, K, 2015. This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.
