Drilling has disclosed a sequence of Cainozoic sediments immediately to the west of the Ediacara mineral field containing little or no dolomitic debris in the lower and middle sections, but with gravel beds of dolomite derived from local rocks in the upper part. It is suggested that the lower and middle sequence of Cainozoic strata was deposited over the area of the Ediacara Range, and that this range was uplifted, probably as a horst block, during Quaternary times and was first exposed to subaerial erosion during the upper Pleistocene epoch.Lower Cambrian dolomites with associated stratiform lead mineralization, which formed the target of drilling on the western downthrown block of the Ediacara Fault, were eroded before deposition of Cainozoic sediments.Intense leaching of basal Cambrian dolomites around the periphery of the Ediacara Basin took place during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. This leaching process has resulted in enrichment of copper and lead mineralization in a thick marginal zone of residual clayey material overlain by dolomitic collapse breccia. These zones of leaching and enrichment were preserved under Cainozoic sediments which have subsequently been eroded. The Ediacara Fault appears to have been a major conduit for mineralizing fluids and is the main lineament of the Torrens Hinge Zone. Contemporaneous movements on this fault have controlled rates of depositionand thickness of sediments across the fault during Adelaidean and Cainozoic times. Though latest movements of this fault have been west block down, the predominant movement has been east block down with associated thickening of sediments to the east in the Adelaide Geosync1ine.

In order to maintain an accurate survey underground, it is first necessary to connect all shafts used for the transferring of the survey to the levels below by a precise surface survey.This has been achieved at Mount Isa by a careful triangulation survey with stations adjacent to those shafts most suitably located for transferring the survey below.The precedure used is described herein.The Weisbach triangle commonly used is obtained by reading to swingirig wires, the theodolite being placed in line with them as nearly as is possible. The surveyor at the surface places the wires in the shaft as far apart as the size of the shaft will permit, with sufficient space between the wires and walls to ensure their swinging freely. The far wire is fixed in position, while the near one is movable by means of fine adjusting screws to facilitate its being brought into line with the fixed wire and the theodolite. When this is done the surveyor at the lower level is advised by pre-arranged signals and the survey can then commence.The surface portion of the survey is simple; all that is necessary being to read the angle from the backsight to the wires, measure their distance from the theodolite, and keep a check on them throughout the survey to make sure that no movement takes place.The lower portion of the survey is more difficult, the surveyor first qf all having to place his theodolite as nearly as possible in line with the wires.

Felspar occurs in association with quartz in the Broken Hill lode pegmatites and is brilliant green, greenish white, and white in colour. The pegmatites occur mainly in the walls in sporadic patches, parallel to the general dip of the ore deposit. The occurrences are of no economic value.Deposits of marketable felspar occur in pegmatite in a number of localities around Broken Hill, New South Wales.The majority of these are in the form of an irregular outcrop, usually of tapering length and depth. The maximum depth of any deposit yet worked in the district is about 40 ft. The felspar is occasionally contaminated by "blows" of quartz, mica and beryl, but the two latter are profitably marketable when separated.Felspars vary in colour from pink, through grey to snow white, and the colour is not indicative of the mineral content. The largest deposit at present being worked is the Egebeck quarry, about 14 miles south of Cockburn. It is a prominent outcrop, roughly circular and about 150 ft. in diameter, covered by one to three feet of overburden.The felspar is mainly massive, but contains some cleavage planes at approximately 90°. Intrusions of quartz and mica occur in patches, but the deposit appears likely to improve in size, regularity and quality below the present working floor.COMMERCIAL USES.Commercial felspars are mainly used in the ceramic industry, for which a high-grade potash felspar is required.The dental industry requires limited amounts of soda felspar with a very low Fe20s content. In nature, ilmenite (FeTiO3) undergoes weathering through oxidation and removal of Fe to form an apparently continuous series of compositions from ilmenite to pseudorutile (ideally Fe2Ti3O9), and with further weathering, to leucoxene. To determine the mechanism of acid-leaching of ilmenite to ultimately form rutile, we have carried out an experimental study of ilmenite alteration in autoclaves at 150¦C in HCl solutions. Resulting products were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and Raman spectroscopy. In some experiments the solution was initially enriched in 18O and the distribution of the isotope in the alteration products mapped from the peak shift in the Raman spectra. The results indicate that the alteration may proceed in two stages, each with a sharp interface between the parent phase and the product. The alteration begins at the original ilmenite crystal surface and along cracks through which the fluid can migrate. The first alteration product is pseudorutile û no phases intermediate between ilmenite and pseudorutile were detected. The textural relationship between ilmenite and pseudorutile suggests a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism rather than a solid state continuous oxidation and Fe diffusion mechanism. The second stage involves a further dissolution-reprecipitation step to form rutile. Raman spectroscopy shows that the 18O is incorporated in the rutile during the recrystallisation. Throughout the alteration process the original morphology of the ilmenite is preserved although the product is highly porous. The rutile inherits crystallographic information from the parent ilmenite, resulting in a triply-twinned rutile microstructure.

The occurrence of gold so finely divided as to be invisible under the microscope, even at magnificatioIl; of 1,200 to 2,000 diameters, is rare, but not unknow;n.. Burg (1930) has described an occurrence of such "invisible gold" from the 25/37 vein of the Bradisor mine at Brad in the Siebengeburgen district of Rumania (Transylvania), in which the pyrite contained up to 150 grams of gold per ton (approx. 5 oz. gold per ton). Hoffman (1931) has described an epithermal silver gold ore from the Titiribi district of Columbia (South America), in which "invisible gold" to the extent of 150 grams per ton occurred in the pyrite, arsenopyrite and zincblende; and Haycock (1937) has recorded it in pyrite from the Surf Point mine (Canada), which contained no visible gold, but yielded positive testsfor gold whenever samples drilled from polished surfaces of apparently homogeneous pyrite were tested spectrographically.The examination of a cyanided pyritic concentrate, together with a sample of the ore from which it' was prepared, from the Dolphin East lode at Vatukoula, Fiji, carried out as part of the programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia, has established a further occurrence of "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Greens are asking the question: what do our mining towns look like in 2050 and how can we be better prepared? The resources boom brought enormous profits to the main players and was partly responsible for insulating Australia through the worst of last year's global economic turmoil. However, with indicators of a resurgent mining boom, it is essential we learn from the recent past. The last boom saw housing stress at levels unseen in the big cities, health services strained to breaking point, and Aboriginal poverty side by side with some of the most lucrative industrial precincts in the country. Much of the wealth still flies right over the heads of regional communities as fly-in, fly-out operations proliferate.   Behind these local stresses, resources booms rely on the stripping of non-renewable resources which will eventually run out, and the unique environment of the north-west is taking a battering.    Communities of the north-west have a perilously narrow economic base which must be broadened if townships of the Pilbara and Goldfields are to avoid the fate of places such as Goldsworthy and Wittenoom. Unless this is informed by local communities, decisions will be made in capital cities thousands of kilometres away by people largely ignorant of the unique conditions prevailing in regional Western Australia.   Global climate change negotiations and oil depletion will heavily penalise emissions-intensive economies like Australia which fail to keep up as the world moves to a low-carbon environment. An investigation into different aspects of importance in the understanding of explosibility of hybrid mixtures of coal dust, air and gases potentially found within mine workings through a comprehensive laboratory program of explosibility tests was conducted. Plotting of test results revealed that conditions of potential explosibility could be described using two dimensional flammability limit surfaces- for coal dust/oxygen; methane/oxygen; and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots, the three dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the coal dust/methane/oxygen mixtures can be defined and illustrated for a coal sample. The surfaces of the three dimensional envelope describe limits which separate inert mixtures of coal dust and methane at varying oxygen levels from those concentrations which are ignitable under defined conditions. It is considered appropriate to generalise that the geometric shapes of these limit regions are applicable to all type classifications of coal dust. There are practical applications of these results to the underground environment.The action of free radical initiators in the propagation of a methane gas explosion was examined for its applicability to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. The oxides of nitrogen or NO x radicals have influence upon the lean limits of flammability of hybrid mixtures and this is illustrated by use of three dimensional coordinate geometry. Gases can be introduced to the underground environment through the exhaust gases of diesel equipment. It is concluded that radical species can substantially increase the flammability of gas and dust flames and as a consequence raise risk of mine atmosphere explosibility.

Brown coal in Victoria in spite of its substantial reserves is not utilized greatly because of its high moisture content(-65% w/w). Transportation and handling costs of raw brown coal, on an available energy basis are so expensive that 93% of production is burnt for electricity generation on or adjacent to the coal deposit in Victoria. With direct firing of moist brown coal in power stations, approximately 20% of the gross calorific value of the fuse is used to evaporate the water contained in the coal. This energy is lost as vapour with the flue gas which is vented to the atmosphere. Also there is a 25% increase in flue gas volume and the size and cost of most of the units through which it passes must be appropriately larger. Since there are large quantities of water present the flame temperature is significantly reduced. For zero excess air and no air pre-heating the theoretical flame temperatures are: 609'o wow moisture 1450¦C 40% ª ª ª 1790¦C ZOO ª ª ª 1990¦C As a result of this there is a reduction in radiant heat transfer leading to a requirement for a two fold increase in radiant tube area. A boiler of much greater size and cost is thus required to house the additional tubes. Figure 1 illustrates the relative sizes of a boiler fired with 60% moisture brown coal with a boiler or similar output fed with a British bituminous coal, 14% moisture.

In the stability assessment of open pit walls, geotechnical engineers have to deal with uncertainty related to structural geology, rock mechanical parameters, groundwater and so on. This uncertainty will immediately and significantly impact on wall stability assessment and therefore. influence mineral recovery and ultimately the financial return of open pit mining. However, the conventional factor of safety applied to measure the stability of slopes and the relevant analytical computer packages cannot quantitatively consider the variability or uncertainty of the input data. As a supplement, therefore, geotechnical engineers have begun to apply probability to the stability assessment of open pit walls over the last two decades. To-date unfortunately, no powerful computer package is available to geotechnical engineers to conduct the probability analysis of slope stability. This paper presents a computer package of probability analysis for rock and soil slope stability. In this computer package, the strength parameters of rock and/or soil material such as cohesion, friction angle and unit weight of the different rock and/or soil type domain in a complex structural geology environment can be considered as the basic input random variables. Groundwater level can also be taken into account as a random variable in this package. Two `rigorous' limit equilibrium solutions, the Morgenstern/Price method and the Sarma method, can be used to calculate the factor of safety during Monte Carlo Simulation applied in this program. Five types of probability distribution are included in this package for the user to simulate basic input random variables. Two realistic cases from BHP Iron Ore are used to illustrate this package.

From 1980 to February 1991 the Rosebery concentrator purchased ore from Aberfoyle's Que River Mine. Following the termination of the contract the concentrator reverted to treating Rosebery ore alone. Since that time it has become apparent that the circuit configuration employed was no longer optimum for zinc metallurgy. The circuit was designed to treat a difficult, slow floating sphalerite; however, the opposite was now found to be true. The sphalerite is fast floating and the circuit was cumbersome. During 1992 extensive circuit changes led to the provision of a simple open circuit flow sheet. The circuit is now easier for operators to understand and lends itself to improvements in process control. Middlings streams have been minimised, which produces a far more stable circuit. Significantly, it must be noted that the key to achieving potential results must lie in reducing variations within the process. A significant ore characterisation program has been undertaken, providing an insight into the metallurgical compatability of the ore to be mined. Using the information collected in this program, metallurgical recoveries and grades can now be predicted with a geater accuracy. Ore characterisation data suggests that an improvement from a 54 per cent zinc concentrate to a 57 per cent zinc concentrate should be achievable. By understanding the size-by-size mineral assemblage, a strategy for concentrate grade improvement has been developed. The requirements of the customer must in all cases determine the quality of the product. Pasminco is a fully-integrated zinc producer and as such significant gains can result by tailoring the concentrates to suit the Smelters.

Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

Between, 1980 and 1984, the demand for non- ferrous metals in the free world grew annually by 1.5 per cent for copper, 0.4 per cent for lead, 1.4 per cent for zinc, and 2.5 per cent for nickel. The growth rate decreased substantially compared to the rate experienced before 1980, and was far lower than the GNP growth during the corresponding period. The main reasons for this are considered to be 1. resource-saving efforts by industrialized countries resulting from the first and the second oil crises, 2. saturated demand for durable consumer goods, and 3. substitution of non-ferrous metals by new materials such as optical fibers.

In the paper a stochastic model of the batch sieving procedure is presen- ted resulting in a system of ordinary differential equations to describe the time dependence of the mass fractions on the sieve surfaces being randomly influenced by sampling errors. The coefficients of the system can be interpreted as sieving velocities. Their dependence on the sieving con- ditions is discussed and a special type of functional relationship and methods are suggested to determine this function experimentally. Moreover the applicability of the approach is demonstrated by an example to evaluate the particle size distribution, if only the result of incomplete test sieving is known. For this problem a rough error estimation is performed.

For an exploration area with a predetermined grid of data points, a construction is given for elementary blocks which subdivide the entire area without omission or overlap, and with the property that each data point is situated at the centre of its corresponding block. The construction has a useful optimal property, and more importantly avoids an error which has been made recently in more than one publication.

I've talked a number of times in the past year or so to audiences like today's about culture -about thinking of it, understanding it, respecting it. So, rather than talk just yet about your laws for mining on Aboriginal land and the successes some of us and some of you have been able to achieve, I'd like to first of all talk about cul- ture as I understand it. Anyone who proposes any kind of development on Aborigi- nal land needs to have some basic understanding of what we, the traditional owners of that land, are about. Without that under- standing, you will find difficulty in coming to terms with us. Many people have experienced this difficulty and, unless we can do something about it together, many more will continue to find it.

The refractory industry in New Zealand is small, consisting of two main manufacturers - one at Huntly and the other at Kamo. Together these would have an annual refractory production of about 30 000 tonnes. The industries which use refractories include two steelworks, NewZealand Steel Limited and Pacific Steel Limited, the former is involved in continuous casting from sponge, iron and scrap steel and the latter is involved in ingot teaming from scrap steel and steel billets; One aluminium smelter, cement works, dairy companies, small foundries producing engineering requirements and many other small users. The New Zealand manufacturers produce refractories in thefire brick range, that is up to 50 per cent alumina content (ignited basis), based on indigenous raw materials and in the high alumina range up to 85 per cent alumina content (ignited basis) based on imported bauxites. All of the basic refractories high purity silica and high alumina low alkali refractories and many of the higher grade acid resisting refractories are imported.
