Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

Ranger Uranium Mines (RUM) operates an open cut located in the Top End of the North- ern Territory. Strict environmental controls govern all operations and the water management requirements have the greatest impact on mine planning. The two main goals of planning are to provide mill feed and to mine sufficient suitable quality waste rock for ongoing con- struction of the tailings dam. Early planning concentrated on staged development of the pit to provide access to as much ore as possible for a given amount of development. All waste was considered to be suitable construction material. Grade control of crusher feed was the main problem in planning, as wide vari- ations occur in ore grade over relatively short distances. Water management for the site ope- rates a no release' system for contaminated waters. Design storage has proven inadequate, and the open cut has been used as the extra storage. As construction of future stages of the tailings dam requires non-mineralised rock materials which meet specific quality criteria, the mine has had to re-examine long term plan- ning and pit development strategies. This has entailed the collection of much data not re- quired under normal mining conditions, such as the assaying of waste drill core. When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. The high gas emissions associated with the depth of mining and very high coal extraction at some Australian Collieries have provided a need to investigate the influence of geological and mining conditions on levels of gassiness. The introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex strata control problems and quick changes in gassiness. To this stage of Australian coal mining, no standard method has been developed to predict the different levels of gassiness associated with the various geological and mining conditions; and the relationship between coal output and total methane make has not been established. For local conditions, with a large number of coal seams lying in close proximity to the working seam, the significant contribution of gas emissions from adjacent strata was expected, especially as strata relaxation occurred during longwall mining. This depends mainly on geological conditions, strata control and coal production. For the deepest of the B.H.P. Collieries in the Newcastle region, the relationship between coal output and total methane make has been investigated by systematic gas balance measurement during longwall extraction. The computer method of iteration was used to approximate the mathematical equation from the initial graphs of coal production versus quantity of methane in the ventilation system for various strata conditions. The angle of caving was established for local geological and mining conditions, for planning and design of the positions of cross measure boreholes.

An overview of flotation reagents used in sulfide and non-sulfide separations, from an industrial perspective, is given in this presentation to highlight the current applications knowledge. The historical and theoretical aspects, which are well documented in numerous books and reviews, will only be highlighted, when necessary, to support the theme of this paper, viz critical analysis of reagent research, design, selection and optimisation with an emphasis on relevance to plant needs and practice. The three types of flotation reagents; viz collectors, frothers and modifiers, used currently in the industry are briefly reviewed; pitfalls and gaps, arising from somewhat arbitrary and reductionistic practice in reagent applications, are identified; and the impact of environmental regulations on current and future reagent development is discussed. The importance of frothers and modifiers, which have received less overall attention than collectors, is highlighted. The need for a rational, holistic (or ætotal systemÆ, ætop-downÆ) approach for reagent design, selection and optimisation is discussed with a view to provide remedies for pitfalls and a platform for filling gaps in reagent chemistry and applications, and to develop reagent technology that can deliver robust solutions to plant needs. Minor iron formation related base metal sulphide mineralization occurs in granulite facies metamorphic rocks of the early Proterozoic Willyama Complex. Rock sequences hosting three iron formation related Cu, Zn, Pb prospects from the Thackaringa Group (Suite 3) are described. A caparison of host rock sequences, style of mineralization and facies of iron formations suggests major differences in terms of the overall depositional environment. However, significant similarities are present with respect to the nature and distribution of iron formation facies and the occurrence of chlorite 'alteration' zones in close proximity to mineralization in all cases. The chlorite within these zones occurs in a number of diverse forms in a range of rock types. A comparison of the prospects shows that there is no evidence to indicate that the chlorite in the zones is a retrograde alteration product of former higher grade prograde mineralogies - the chlorite appears to have survived granulite facies metamorphism. The mode of occurence of the chlorite in the 'alteration' zones together with the fact that the association quartz + chlorite + magnetite + pyrite + base metals is cx rmn to all areas suggests that the chlorite is specifically related to the processes which deposited the stratiform iron formations and related sulphides. It is considered that the chlorite precursor was a prenetanorphic alteration product or chemical sediment closely related to submarine hot spring activity which was also the source for chemical sediment precursors of the iron formations, associated lode rocks and Sulphides.

A two year study into the effects of coal mining induced subsidence on cliff lines was undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources with the support of a grant under the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Program. A new monitoring technique, using an Electronic Distance Meter and acrylic reflectors attached to the cliffs, provided safety for the surveyors and extensive and accurate three dimensional displacement data on the movement of the cliffs as they were being undermined. The study report included many graphs showing the measured vertical and horizontal displacements, differential subsidence, tilts and strains and included analysis of these movements with various parameters, such as, seam thickness, depth of cover and distances between the reflectors, longwall face and the edge of the chain pillar. Some of these graphs are presented in this paper and could be used, with caution, to predict subsidence movements around other cliff lines, after allowing for differences in geology and mining layout. A mechanism is suggested as an explanation for the observed high horizontal movements around the cliff lines. Sixteen percent of the overall lengths of cliffs that were undermined during the monitoring study fell and the contributions of various factors that appeared to influence the cliff falls are discussed. It is concluded that no single factor dominated as the major cause of the cliff falls and, often, many factors combined to cause cliff face instability.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

Geostatistical simulation techniques are used to quantify uncertainty of spatial attributes of interest describing mineral deposits, petroleum reservoirs, hydrogeological horizons, environmental contaminants and so on. The majority of existing methods consider second-order spatial statistics and Gaussian processes, while the more advanced multiple point-based simulation approaches are algorithmic and do not consistently account for the high-order spatial relations in data. Recently, simulation techniques for complex and non-Gaussian spatially distributed variables have been developed, based on high-order spatial cumulants, and make no assumptions on data distribution or require data transformations. In this paper, the previous developments are extended and a new approach for the joint simulation of multiple correlated variables using high-order spatial statistics is proposed. The technique is based on a new algorithm for the decorrelation of correlated variables into factors, using the so-termed diagonal domination condition of high-order cumulants. The decorrelated factors are then simulated using high-order simulation and back-transformed into the initial correlated variables. The decorrelation using diagonal domination of high-order statistics is tested with a data set from a multielement iron ore deposit, and then a fully known two-dimensional data set with two correlated variables is used to demonstrate the practical intricacies of the proposed method.CITATION:Minniakhmetov, I and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. It has always been a challenge to accelerate the underground development progress by increasing the advance rate of each development round. Surveys have shown that most of the development rounds have only been pulled 84 per cent to 94 per cent of the drilled length. Where bare detonators have been used as primers, less advance rate is expected. In order to obtain a good understanding of the influence of priming upon the advance rate in underground development, a series of high energy primer trials has been conducted by Orica Explosives in the goldfields using various types of Orica high energy Anzomex « primers. It has been shown that development face has been pulled an extra 140 mm to 420 mm by priming with Anzomex « K primers compared with conventional primers. From all the trials at different sites, we have seen that the face pulled using K primers was more square than that pulled using conventional primers. Virtually, no butts and toe were left on the face developed using K primers. Computer simulation has been conducted using either a conventional primer, a bare detonator or a K primer as initiator. The study compared the predicted crack patterns developed around the toe of the hole and it was deducted that a detonator-initiated hole would leave a butt some 200 mm longer than that from a conventional primer-initiated hole, and a K primer-initiated blasthole would give rise to stronger initial p-wave, promoting crack development around the toe and increasing the ability to pull close to the full depth.

This paper aims to highlight the global exploration opportunities that exist in connection with Ural-Alaskan (UA)-type intrusions. The key economic importance of UA intrusions is the existence of metallic platinum (mainly iron-platinum alloys) associated generally with chromite mineralisation and located within a dunite core, especially its coarse-grained part. Being very dense and resistant to erosion, platinum can form rich placers as the intrusion erodes. Big multimillion ounce placer platinum deposits of this type have historically been successfully mined for many years (eg Russia, Colombia and Alaska).However, large-scale exploration and mining of platinum placers currently occurs only in the Russian Far East. Outside of Russia, there is now little or no understanding of this type of deposit and its economic importance. Using successful operations in Russia as examples, it is demonstrated that there are many opportunities for similar discoveries all around the world, especially around the Pacific Rim, where such intrusions tend to be concentrated. Examples of highly prospective areas in eastern Australia and New Zealand are given. Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. Iron from the blast furnace constitutes the starting point in steel production and any increase that can be made in iron production will bring about important repercussions in a long line of processes. Coke constitutes a major item in furnace operation and consumption at the Port Kembla Works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd. has been approximately 1,850 lb. per ton of iron produced on ore practice, or 3,000 tons per day.For many years coke quality has been subject to much criticism by furnace operators throughout the world, sometimes with little real grounds. Whatever the merits of previous arguments, and they were no doubt two-sided, the development of bigger furnaces has focused attention on coke strength. At the same time a decrease in the quantity of good quality coking coals available to many plants has stimulated research in this field.Extensive coke research has been carried out overseas, and in Australia the.B.H.P. Organization is now actively doing likewise in its Central Research Laboratories at Shortland near Newcastle, N.S.W., and works research groups at Newcastle and Port Kembla Steelworks. Similar work has been initiated in the beehive coking industry. Such work is in its infancy and this paper will outline the direction of the activities at Port Kembla rather than propound specific solutions.At Port Kembla good quality coking coals are readily available from the IIIawarra coalfield. The seams generally mined for coking are Bulli and Wongawilli and to a much smaller extent Tongarra. Characteristics of these coals appear in Table 1.

In April 2013, Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper’s (RTKC) Bingham Canyon mine experienced what is arguably the world’s largest ever in-pit slope failure. The failure initiated along a major, continuous, low-strength bedding fault, named the Manefay bed, and comprised approximately 145Mtonnes of rock and waste dump material. Initial East wall slope deformations were detected some months prior to catastrophic slope collapse by RTKC’s slope monitoring systems. However, the failure mechanism was different to that which had historically been experienced in the prior more-than-100 years of open pit mining. Failure occurred as two separate events, the initial one likely consisting of a frictional failure of rock materials along the Manefay bed itself, before a second phase of failure occurred, which included a large mass of old rail dump material. The combination of these events led to a much larger failure run-out than had been anticipated by the RTKC team which led to loss of, and damage to, mining equipment and infrastructure as well as significant interruption to mining activities. Due to the diligent monitoring of the slopes no safety impacts were experienced at the mine, and as such the details and learnings from this failure can readily be shared with the broader mining and geotechnical industries to avoid similar recurrences elsewhere. New knowledge has no economic value unless it can be applied, or æcapturedÆ, as the R&D jargon has it. Australia probably spends more than $500 m per year on mineral industry R&D, distributed amongst the mining companies (IR&D Board, 1997), CSIRO, the universities and others. The investors in this research (industry, and the community via government) will expect some sort of return from their investment. The return will be poor unless the know-how developed in R&D programs can be exploited. This paper explores some of the issues involved in capturing the outcomes of mineral industry R&D in a form which can be exploited for economic benefit, and suggests ways in which it might be done better. It is based on the experience of the JKMRC in conducting applied research in mining and mineral processing and delivering it to the industry. It may seem presumptuous for a research contractor to be telling its clients how to do their job. However, the process of developing, acquiring and implementing R&D outcomes has to be a partnership between provider and receiver, in order for this process to work efficiently. This applies whether the two parties operate within a single corporation (a corporate laboratory and a business unit, for example) or are two entirely independent organisations (eg a mining company and a university). Both partners have a role to play, and the best examples of realising the benefits of R&D almost always involve the open-hearted and skilful handling of this synergy.

There is very little in Australian mining law that sets out the rights of mining tenement and exploration licence holders as against other parties who wish to carry out ground or aerial surveillance over those areas.There have already been several legal actions arising out of this lack, and more can be expected as the public places more rigorous constraints on corporate and individual behaviour. Field personnel, who are mainly fairly junior and less experienced, are entitled to some guidance from the minerals industry, guidance which up to now appears to have been either lacking or covering such a wide range of standards from corporation to corporation as to be virtually useless.Because each State writes its own laws there is no consistency, and the laws generally are lagging behind developments in the industry. In particular, the practice of granting mining tenements for sporadic exploration, a practice that is a leftover from much earlier mining law, has dotted the Australian continent with unattended and unmarked or poorly marked tenements that are difficult to find but confer on the holder prior rights to the minerals under them. Entry onto those areas in most jurisdictions is an offence and their existence compromises the efforts of regional explorers.This clearly unsatisfactory situation requires remedying, which is the purpose of these proposals. A more systematic approach to the granting of reconnaissance, regional and detailed exploration, mining, and retention rights will eliminate much of the problem. For the rest, a code of practice needs to be adopted as soon as possible.

Contemporary mine wastewater flows are subject to stringent water quality standards before discharge to local waterways. Strict criteria are often applied as a result of fears of extensive acid mine drainage; a feature of the many abandoned mine adits around the Coromandel, Central Otago, and the West Coast. In most cases the USEPA water quality criteria have been used to set treated wastewater discharge water quality standards. In future it is possible that the recently published ANZECC water quality criteria guidelines will be used for this purpose. The ANZECC guidelines also provide for the establishment of discharge criteria at specific sites, rather than accept the trigger values. The use of site-specific criteria for treated wastewater mine discharges was pioneered at the Golden Cross gold mine, near Waihi, in the late 1980s. The procedure used to derive water quality criteria was based on USEPA guidelines. In developing the Golden Cross criteria, only species that occur, or are similar to those that occur in the Waitekauri River were used. The mine commenced discharge of treated wastewater in 1991, and macroinvertebrate communities in the vicinity of the discharge point have been regularly monitored twice a year for the past 12 years. Despite fluctuations in community composition and abundance over that period, no permanent significant changes in the macroinvertebrate communities occurred between sites above and below the treated wastewater discharge. The success of the site-specific criteria at Golden Cross has shown how the application of this methodology can result in the protection of aquatic life while allowing for the discharge of treated mine wastewater.

The resistance of lead to chemical attack and the ease of its fabrication has made it one of the most useful of the metals available to the chemical engineer and the electrometallurgist. It has proved to be of particular value in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, and since the conversion of the sulphur of pyritic ores into sulphuric acid is becoming the duty of the metallurgist, the corrosion resistance of this metal will be a matter of considerable interest to him from the standpoints of both producer and user. He realises that there is little to be gained in carrying the process of purification past the ordinary economic limit if little or nothing is to be added to its corrosion resistance, and he as user would not be willing to pay a premium for such purification if it can be shown that its reputed value has no scientific foundation.The metallurgist is well acquainted with the trouble and expense of meeting demands which have nothing torecommend them but prejudice and fancy. The valuable anti-corrosive properties of lead are very commonly ascribed to its forming insoluble compounds with the acids sulphuric, hydrochloric, carbonic, etc. If we trusted superficial visual evidence alone, such a view would receive strong support, but in the light of what we know of the mechanism of corrosion we must attribute its resistance to other factors much less obvious to casual inspection. Certainly there may be some mechanical obstruction set up to diffusion of the liquids towards the surface of the metal.

Multiple regression analysis applied to ventilation records of stopes on the Witwatersrand showed that it was possible to estimate the temperature increase per 100 ft for a new stope with a standard deviation of 0' 5°F. The analysis also threw light on the relative effect on this estimate of five different factors.Application of the analysis of variance technique to a factorialexperiment on the production of dust during rock drilling showed that the effects of air and water pressure were quite small but also showed that the between-machine variation was unexpectedly large.Analysis of variance also proved a valuable means for assessing the bias and random error variation of aneroid barometers used in pressure surveys.INTRODUCTIONThree examples are discussed to illustrate the use of the techniques of "analysis of variance" and "multiple regression" in research on the ventilation of gold mines. Although the techniques are basically similar their application to each example has a slightly different emphasis and the examples were chosen for this reason. The variation ofemphasis is as follows.1. Temperature increases in stapes. This work was undertaken as a preliminary to possible extensive controlled experimentation (Lambrechts, 1959). Data collected in routine work by the mine ventilation personnel were used for analysis and no specific experiments were carried out. The main object was to see whether such data could provide any strong pointers to factors which might be worthy ofmore careful study and to factors which could initially be ignored. Of course, there was hope that the study might provide an empirical formula for rough forecasts.

IT is intended herein: to make some brief comments on geophysical 'work in general and on the various methods, and then to refer to that branch which, perhaps, is of the greatest importance and interest to the metalliferous mining engineer, i.e., the variousmethods of electrical prospecting.The term geophysics was originally applied to those larger physical and geodetic studies and methods concerned with such purely scientific subjects as the investigation of the true figure of the earth and the determination of the stability relations resultingtherefrom. Applied geophysics and geophysical methods of prospecting are concerned primarily with the search for, and investigation of, useful mineral deposits concealed within the earth's crust and not readily detectable by the normal methods employed bythe mining geologist and prospector. The methods employed have been devised as a result of co-operation between mining men, geologists, and physicists, and, although steady progress has been made during the past 20 years or so, it is within the last four orfive years that the importance of these methods has been acknowledged by the mining world in general. Although many of these methods are still in, or have barely emerged from, the experimental stages, a steadily increasing list of important discoveries is attributable to their employment-more particularly in Europe and America than elsewhere. The various methods have each their own limitations regarding the class of work they can undertake, and no one method is capable of general application.
