With the recent wider introduction of friction hoists of the Koepe type. for winding from depths of more than 3000 feet it has been found that failure by fatigue is the most common form of rope deterioration. Large numbers of wire breaks occur near the centre of the rope cross-section and it is difficult to detect these with certainty using the preferred d.c. magnetic test. For best results with conventional search coils their dimen- sions should be related to the typical wire break field pattern surrounding the longitudionally magnetised rope. The field of a broken wire was experimentally determined, using a Polish type MD6 Defectograph wire rope testing magnet and a short prepared length of rope with a movable simulated broken wire. The external field distortion perpendicular to the rope was measured by means of a gaussmeter and Hall probe. The advantages of this method are that terrestial magnetism and inherent rope "noise" have no effect on the results.

During 1995 a catastrophic accident took place at the No 2 Vaal Reefs shaft in South Africa, when a locomotive fell onto a cage, causing the death of 104 people. The subsequent Commission of Enquiry found that the safety detaching hook had opened when hit by parts of the falling locomotive, detaching the cage from the rope and allowing the cage to drop 400 m down the shaft. It was believed that had the hook not detached, the rope would have been sufficiently elastic not to have failed, implying that many fatalities may have been avoided. In addition, the risk of accidental opening of hooks due to impact with smaller falling objects in shafts became a concern. This paper deals with a comprehensive statistical investigation that was performed to quantify this risk, establish acceptable levels of such risks and to derive criteria for the resistance of detachment hooks against accidental opening caused by impacts. The investigation involved a survey, dynamic finite element analyses and Monte Carlo simulations.

The variation in coal properties and the coal seam reduced level can be analysed using partial trend-surface analysis techniques. For the area studied seam reduced level and seam thickness data from the Bulli Coal yield trend-surfaces with a high coefficient of determination, since they have relatively small systematic local and random components in their overall variation. Sulphur content appears to have no significant re.gi_onal trend, and phosphorus content has a very weak regional trend. Other analytical variables have regional trends which are of intermediate strength. The strike-directions of.the statistically significant first degree! trend-surface are similar, sug-gesting.: that the variation of the several coal properties was controlled by a set of- related causes. The relations apparent from the dip and strike of the first degree trend-surfaces are similar to- those which are apparent from the trend- surface residuals and'from the results' of canonical trend-surface analysis.'.. The direct method of gas content determin ation developed by McCulloch and Diamond of the U.S.B.M. has been adapted to estimate the gas content of coal seams from slim exploration borecores in the Southern Coalfield. Emphasis has been placed on the measurement of this parameter without the physical destruction of the core which is required for subsequent chemical analysis. In field and laboratory equipment is simple and inexpensive. It enables the determination of lost and desorbed gas from a fresh geological core. Residual gas is not measured but is considered to be relatively low and of no consequence in ventilation considerations. Results to date show good correlation with those obtained from underground face samples. Gas contents from the mined seams varying from 2 m3/tonne to 14 m3/tonne have been measur- ed with this apparatus. Gas desorption characteristics of South Coast coals have been found to closely follow exponential mathematical Models.

It was shown that manganese dioxide could be used as an oxidant in acid thiourea leaching of a gold ore. Manganese dioxide could generate high redox potentials and was as effective as hydrogen peroxide in the leaching process. Results obtained under closely controlled leaching conditions confirmed that high redox potentials enabled faster dissolution of gold to be obtained but led to extremely high reagent consumptions (thiourea, acid, and manganese dioxide). Additions of sodium sulphite solution in an attempt to lower thiourea consumption by reducing formamidine disulphide back to thiourea were only marginally successful. Although thio- urea consumption was slightly decreased, the consumption of acid and manganese dioxide was substantially increased and there was no net benefit in using sulphite. Tests in which a single addition of mangan- ese dioxide was made before addition of thiourea minimized overall reagent consumption and gave only a slightly lower dissolution rate of gold. This is a promising technique for further Investigation.

This paper reviews the issues of mining machinery automation with special emphasis on underground applications. Automation is desirable because it offers the following advantages: ò increased safety by reducing human exposure to hazards of underground mining; ò higher productivity; and ò reduced wear of equipment. In spite of these advantages and in spite of numerous attempts over the past several decades, mining automation has been a difficult proposition, partly because no two mining operations are exactly alike and these operations are carried out in an unpredictable environment. This is the main difference between automation in factories and in mines and that is why mining automation has been lagging so far behind factory automation. Automation is possible only when the machine 'knows' its workspace. In a factory, this workspace can be 'described' to the machine because it is sufficiently controlled. In a mine, the environment undergoes continuous change and the only way the machine can 'know' its workspace is through real-time sensing.

Coal Mining Land Use on the southern coalfields often preceded other land uses. Over the past century overlying land use has altered significantly, particularly with water supply storage development, road system building, railways, pipelines, electricity reticulation schemes and general urban develop- ment. National Parks were declared over coal bearing lands. Little regard was paid to the coal under the land surface by land developers, Government instrumentalities, central planners and the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board and others, and little value was placed on this valuable energy source. These bodies derived no benefit from the under- lying mineral. In these circumstances, mine operators and such surface land users were put into adversary roles. Mass sterilisation of coal resources resulted. The loss of reserves continues, although the problem has become better under- stood. An Energy Impact Statement (EIS) submission by all surface land developers has been proposed as a means to justify the impact of the development on the coal reserves Beneath.

The basic rule for correct design of a sample plant is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. However, this rule is often ignored in the design of sample plants to save capital costs. This is false economy, because the samples taken are likely to be seriously biased and the precision may be compromised. The introduction of bias is particularly serious, because no amount of replicate sampling and analysis will reduce bias once it is present and it is often quite difficult and expensive to subsequently rectify the problem due to space limitations around the primary sampling location. This is also true of secondary and tertiary sampling stages, particularly in terms of the relationship between particle size and retained sample mass. The best strategy is to seek expert sampling advice and design the sample plant correctly at the outset.

Tests were conducted in plexiglass and Rockite models to determine if crater blasting could be improved by changes in charge geometry or by alterations to the borehole. Circumferential grooves were placed at various locations in the borehole in an attempt to control the initiation site of the crater. Grooves located at or above the top of the cylindrical charge had no effect on the resulting crater. Grooves placed too low in the borehole were successful in controlling the initiation site but the growth of the fracture system was not sufficient to reach the upper surface. Grooves located at a height of two thirds of the charge length were quite successful in that resulting craters were bigger by at least a factor of six than the normal crater. Testing was conducted in Rockite models to investigate charge geometry. Spherical charges in ungrooved boreholes resulted in crater sizes that were three times larger than those caused by cylindrical charges.

The Pao gold prospect in N. Luzon, is an example of a high sulphidation epithermal gold system hosted in Mid-Tertiary alkaline volcanics, in the Philippine Arc. Styles of mineralization include: quartz-enargite veins, vuggy silica alteration bodies, and pervasive low grade (0.5ppm) gold mineralization, associated with kaolinite-pyrite-quartz alteration, and geochemically characterized by high As and Hg. Early magnetite-epidote-chlorite alteration linked to an unexposed granitoid is overprinted by an extensive zone of advanced argillic alteration (kaolinite-pyrite-quartz). No alunite is recorded. Important controls of mineralization include; a broad anticline intersected by axial faults, permeable pyroclastic units, and upward confinement of the alteration system by a highly impermeable, clay-rich volcanic unit. At this stratigraphic position the most important mineralization waz developed. The Pao high sulphidation system is not closely related to a stratovolcanic centre, and has formed subsequent to deformation of the volcanic field. It may, however, be related to an unexposed comagmatic intrusion.

Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath pre- dominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increas- ingly important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations commenced in the mid 1960's and it is now possible to predict subsidence in the Southern Coalfield with reasonable con- fidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of the subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover. The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidence of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.

Plutonic Resources Limited (formerly known as Pioneer Mineral Exploration Limited) delineated, developed and operates the Plutonic Gold Mine located 180 kms northeast of Meekatharra, Western Australia. Gold mineralisation was discovered in the Marymia greenstone belt by Great Central Mines NL (GCM) in 1988. There was no previous, recorded gold mining activity in the area. In May 1989, Plutonic Resources Limited (PRL) entered into an agreement to acquire a 51 per cent interest in the three Mining Leases containing the Plutonic deposit from GCM. Subsequently in December 1989, PRL acquired the remaining 49 per cent interest in the Mining Leases. PRL and GCM are also involved in a 51:49 regional joint venture on extensive Exploration Licences in the vicinity of the Mining Leases. Following due diligence validation, reserve delineation and testwork, a feasibility study was undertaken in conjunction with JR Engineering Services, which led to the financing and development of the project for operation in August 1990.

Australia as a leading producer of mineral sands has also occupied a leading position in many areas of research'in the processing and applications of these minerals. Research in upgrading ilmenite to produce synthetic rutile has resulted in the develop- ment of many processes, e.g,., Becher, Murso, Chlorine Technology, and ICI processes. Studies on the reducibility of ilmenites, aqueous leaching of reduced ilmenites, Fe-Ti-O system, leachability of natural and treated ilmenites in hydrochloric acid and selective chlorination of iron from ilmenites have been carried out in order to develop and improve the efficiency of the above processes. While research on the processing of zircon sand to produce high purity (99.99% ZrO2 zirconia powder and zirconium chemicals started only recently, research by CSIRO in the early 1970s led to the discovery of the phenomenon of transformation toughening in partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics. Australia, with very significant resources of lanthanide-containing ores, pro- duces substantial quantities of monazite each year but research in processing and appli- cations of rare earths was neglected in recent years in this country. However, research to improve processes for the recovery of rare earths is now under way and studies on the production and testing of Nd-B-Fe magnets which are 1.5-2 times stronger than the strongest magnets (Sm-Co) currently available, have also commenced.' An overview of the research in the pro- cessing and applications of mineral sands during the last two decades in Australia and its implications for the industry are pre- sented in the paper.

In mineral processing, the management of tailings may become increasingly more challenging with a change of ore type and the quality of water used in the plant. This, in turn, may affect the overall costs of the operation and water usage and, in the long-term, pose challenges for mine closure and rehabilitation. Depending on the applied treatment technique, the short and long-term properties of tailings are largely determined by the fine particles. Most clay materials and ultrafine particles exist in tailings from oil sands, coalmines and base metals, bringing about challenges in dewatering performance. Moreover, given the growing concern for water scarcity, the minerals industry is increasingly turning towards the use of saline water, which poses yet another challenge for tailings management. The high salt content alters the behaviour of clay particles, making dewatering a more complex process than in freshwater systems (Boshrouyeh Ghandashtani et al, 2022; Costine et al, 2018). High-density techniques for tailings management have been used for several years in the mineral industry. In this regard, one of the novel and promising dewatering methods is in-pipe or inline flocculation, where the polymer is added at high dosages to thickener underflows, giving additional (likely denser) aggregation, releasing more water on deposition compared to low solids thickening. Previous research in the field of flocculation has primarily focused on the process of flocculation itself, specifically the settling rate and size of aggregates, rather than the long-term impacts of the produced tailings materials (Liu et al, 2020; Jeldres et al, 2017). This is particularly true for the novel method of this technology, where polymer is added to the thickener underflow. Furthermore, these studies have used small-scale set-ups using buckets/beakers, plungers and mechanical stirrers for the flocculation process. Unfortunately, these methods lack the necessary control over the properties of the treated tailings, which can lead to irreproducible mixing and dispersion of viscous polymer solutions (Fawell, Costine and Grabsch, 2015). Consequently, a system that can work with a wide range of operational conditions for high-solid tailings material is essential for reliable and reproducible results. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of different type of polymers in the presence of monovalent and divalent salts on the inline flocculation of artificial tailings. The next step was to evaluate the impact of high-dosage polymer addition on geotechnical properties such as settling rate, consolidated density, rate of consolidation and the hydraulic conductivity of tailings. In addition, this research aimed to fill a knowledge gap and investigate the feasibility of using polymer-treated tailing in removing the copper ions and then quantify the performance of produced aggregates under time-dependent processes.

In an environment of decreasing ore grade, increasing costs and uncertainty with respect to commodity prices, the industry could benefit from evaluating alternative technologies and innovative circuit configurations. The flexible circuit approach suggests that the design of grinding circuits can be adapted to changes in feed properties and economic conditions. Advances in modelling and simulation are enabling metallurgists to predict the performance of more complex circuit configurations with increased confidence. Ore variability information and processing costs may be used as modelling inputs to determine the optimum processing conditions at a given time. A case study has been completed demonstrating the value of combining a flexible circuit with a model-based optimisation of the process. Ore properties and equipment performance data obtained in operating plants have been used to model and simulate flexible circuit configurations.This paper explores strategies to introduce flexibility to existing circuit configurations when processing ores with high variability. Multicomponent models incorporated in the model developers’ kit (MDK) allow the simulation of more complex and flexible circuits. This capability enables demonstration of the potential to enhance metal production through adapting processing routes according to the ore type being processed. The simulation of different flow sheet configurations allowed the definition of the best option for maintaining the metal production when treating lower grade ores, highlighting the advantages of flexible circuit configurations compared with a one-process-fits-all approach.CITATION:Foggiatto, B, Hilden, M M and Powell, M S, 2014. "Mining has still today high potential for improvement in the exploitation efficiency. Especially low-grade ores have very low recoveries. In Cu bioleaching operations from porphyry copper deposits extraction of only five and 15 per cent with maximum of 40 per cent are reached. This means that 60–95 per cent of the resource is not exploited. Consequently, any metal not extracted will end up in the waste material, therefore increasing the risk of environmental pollution. This inefficiency is mainly due to the use of element concentrations for decision-making on the daily basis of a mining operation (eg cut-off ore grade, acid-base accounting – ABA). If, instead, quantitative mineralogical and geochemical data together with information on the bioleaching behaviour of the ore assemblage (the biogeometallurgical approach), is used for decision-making right from the beginning of the exploitation, higher recoveries and less environmental impact can be achieved, ie an increase in sustainability can be reached.CITATION:Dold, D, 2016. The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. For more than four decades, rehabilitated lands in the Bowen Basin have been planted with buffel grass (Cenchrus Ciliaris), which is often used to provide rapid, stabilising and erosion reducing cover to reshaped landforms (Erskine and Fletcher, 2013; Harwood, Hacker and Mott, 1999; Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000; Naidu et al, 1997). Historically introduced to Central Queensland and encouraged by pastoralists in the early 1900s (Humphreys, 1967), the species has been extensively used by mine managers in seeding mixes (Coaldrake and Russell, 1970; Edye, 1975), and the invasive nature of the grass has led to the monodominance in rehabilitated areas of semi-arid Central Queensland. With 40 open cut coalmines in Central Queensland (Department of Natural Resources and Mines, 2015), a considerable amount of land is either disturbed mine footprint (156 200 ha) or rehabilitated (29 200 ha) (Dale, 2015), and the bulk of rehabilitation consists of relatively young (<30-year-old) developing ecosystems, with demonstrated biomass fuel loads up to 20 t/ha (Grigg, Shelton and Mullen, 2000).Uncontrolled fire poses a significant risk to rehabilitated landforms that are located in close proximity to mining infrastructure, neighbouring communities, open pits with exposed flammable coal seams and flammable stockpiled coal resource. Mine lease holders in Queensland have the added responsibility of managing and protecting any endangered regional ecosystem communities, and flora and fauna listed federally under the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act 1999 or the State Vegetation Management Act 1999; as well as, any culturally significant sites such as scar trees or middens that are found on-site. Additionally, uncontrolled fire in rehabilitated landscapes poses a significant risk to mine site closure goals, with the potential to create altered states and stalled ecological trajectories (Grant, 2006).
