Sublevel open stoping (S.L.O.S.) was introduced at Rosebery in 1972 in the wider ore blocks below 14 level, largely replacing cut and fill methods which had been in use up till that time. During 1973/74 the method produced 10% of primary stoping tonnes, and by 1981/82 it increased to 65%. Because of the increasing reliance placed on sublevel open stoping for primary stoping production, every effort was made in both planning and operating to: - maximise ore recovery and reduce dilution - increase productivity - reduce costs.

This paper is based on studies made intermittently from 1937 to 1950. Its object is to describe the surface geology and the tin lodes, and to relate the lodes to the structure of the field.PREVIOUS REFERENCESR L. Jack made his first report on the field in 1880, but his principal report was made in 1883. W. E. Cameron described the Great Northern lodes in 1904. Numerous later reports on various mines were made by L. C. Ball, J. H. Reid and C. C. Morton, the most important of which were on the Black King, Good Friday, St. Patrick and the Great Northern Gully Shaft.GENERAL GEOLOGYJensen maps the Herberton area as part of a granite massif intruding rocks of two ages, the Younger Metamorphics of Silurian-Devonian age, and the Older Metamorphics of Older Palaeozoic age. The distinction is apparently based on lithological data. The Older Metamorphic rocks occur as inliers in the granite massif to the west and east of Herberton (Fig. 1).The area described consists of granite traversed by numerous dykes. West of the area, approaching the Older Metamorphic rocks, the granite becomes finer grained as if chilled towards its contact, and the dykes more numerous. To the east, passing from the Nova Scotia mine to Mount Lavery there are numerous dyke rocks, but the outcrops are poor and knowledge of the geology indefinite. Australia has many potentially important tin deposits, particularly on the eastern shore of the continent and in Tasmania. A number of these have been worked on a meagre scale, while some of them, because of metallurgical, transport, and other difficulties, have not as yet been developed.Believing that the full development of the tin fields of the Commonwealth of Australia is in part dependent upon the adoption of the most efficient methods of milling and smelting, the Development and Migration Oommission arranged for the first-mentioned author to visit the mining fields of Cornwall, one of the oldest tin-producing districts of the world, and prepare a report for the information of the Commission.This paper, now presented to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with the hope that it will assist the full development of tin mining in Australia, is the joint work of both authors.For over two thousand years tin has been produced from the Cornish mines. Even the ancient Greek historians made mention of tin mining in Cornwall, and it is probable that during the earliest periods the mining was alluvial. As early as 1602 a stamp battery working in Cornwall was described, and in 1671 calcination and buddling was a recognised scheme of treating pyritic ore. In the first half of the 16th century the output of tin from Cornwall was 700 tons per annum, and, from then on, production increased to the maximum in 1914 of 6500 tons. At present (Oct., 1929) the Cambourne-Redruth area produces over 95% of the Cornish tin output. This area includes such mines as the South Crofty, East Pool, Dolcoath, Parkanchy, Polhigey, and Wheal Kitty. The remaining 5% is largely supplied by the Levant and Geevor mines at Pendeen, St. Just area, near Land's End.

Comparison of the Zadra, Anglo-American and organic solvent procedures for desorption of gold from activated carbon loaded in carbon-in-pulp gold circuits indicates that the Anglo American and the organic solvent procedures are considerably more effective than the commonly used Zadra procedure. Organic solvent elution procedures, particularly those using acetonitrile and acetone, can provide effective gold elution and very high concentrations of gold in eluate solutions. The operational simplicity and effectiveness of the Anglo American procedure would appear to make it the most satisfactory procedure available at the present time but this may change as the solvent elution procedures become better developed. INTRODUCTION The carbon-in-pulp technique has been introduced into the gold processing industry to by-pass the often lengthy CCD and filtration steps required in the conventional Merrill Crowe cyanidation procedure for gold recovery. Adsorption of gold on to carbon is also a valuable technique for recovering trace amounts of gold from low level waste streams from conventional processing procedures.

This paper presents the findings from an experimental study of the effects of shock and gas penetration breakage mechanisms in rick blasting. A blasthole liner method, which realistically seperated these two basic sources of energy in blasting, was developed and utilized. The use of four different explosives with contrasting detonation behaviour produced a wide variation in the nature of explosive energy transfer to the rock. Through extensive field experiments it was found that, relative to low VOD dynamite, the high VOD emulsion imparted greater shock to the rock and therefore produced finer fragmentation and greater back damage. The comparatively lower heave energy of the emulsion caused less immediate blast results were obtained with watergel and ANFO explosives, which have detonation behaviour and energy partitioning charecteristics lying between emulsions and dynamite.

Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending. A method of selective gold recovery from black sands has been elaborated which is based on the liquid phase low temperature chlorination of materials. A liquid agent mixture of sulphur monochloride S2C12 and sulphur dichloride SC12 is used. This method ensures the gold extraction either in the state of AuC13.SC14 complex salt solution or as metal. The kinetics and main physico-chemical parameters of the process (eg density, solid: liquid ratio, temperature) have been investigated. The materials investigated were quartz-insipid ride samples with low sulphur and high iron (up to 70 per cent Fe2O3) contents. Gold recovery is 96 - 99 per cent at temperatures not exceeding 100¦C. Most of the associated minerals remain in the cake. To obtain metallic gold, the resulting solution of the AuC13.SC14 salt after leaching is reduced by hydrazine with subsequent annealing. The elaborated method is remarkable for small energy expenditures owing to low process temperature and a high gold dissolution rate. The solution of sulphur chlorides and other reagents are used in closed cycle.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.

The influence of clay slime, particle size and reagent type are but a few of the many factors that affect the recovery of fine coal. Laboratory test work has indicated that substantial increases in recovery could be achieved by improvements in technology in all these areas. Unfortunately, in most cases this technology has not carried through to the operating plants.

The Hilton Mine, 20 km north of Mount Isa was discovered in 1947. The underground mine has been a significant producer from 1989. The long development history is the result of complex orebody geometry, difficult metallurgy, dewatering problems and competition for development funds from the then expanding Isa Mine at Mount Isa. At present it produces 1.4 million tonnes annually. Its 21 million tonnes of reserves are necessary to supplement Isa Mine production.Hilton Mine is located in the Urquhart Shale formation of the Mount Isa Group, within the Mid Proterozoic Mount Isa Inlier. The seven developed orebodies have suffered strong structural deformation. Each orebody has a unique mixture of mineralogy and texture which effects ore value and metallurgical performance. These characteristics have proven useful for correlation purposes.The faulting and folding have caused difficulties with orebody interpretation, geomechanical complexities and has influenced the choice of mining methods: Initial cut and fill and open scope designs have given way to bench mining methods in response to better understanding of the eedloav and economic constraints.

The Hunter Valley Coal Preparation Plant and associated materials handling facilities commenced operation in mid 1982. The new plant and coal handling system were designed to integrate with existing mining and preparation plant operations, but also to be flexible to future mining and marketing developments. The system includes: raw coal stockpiles, a 900 tph dense medium/water washing cyclone preparation plant, clean coal stockpiles, a 7.8 km overland conveyor, large finished product stockpiles and a high capacity train loading plant.The plant's development is described with reference to the original planning objectives. Features aimed at providing operational flexibility and performance are emphasised, including the use of; automated stackers and reclaimers, modular plant, distributed PLC control, a single flight overland conveyor, a network of automatic samplers and blending options to assist quality control.Details are also provided of an innovative technique for control of reclaimer rail track forces, stacker and reclaimer anti-collision systems and the use of DC injection braking.

The TauTona (Sotho for Great Lion) Mine near Carletonville, which is one of AngloGold AshantiÆs most profitable operations in South Africa, has started a multi-million dollar expansion project that is expected to extend the operational life of the mine by at least three years. The project will also secure some 1900 jobs for existing workers and contract workers. The $US140 million project entails the development of the orebody to a record depth of almost 4 km underground. It means that TauTona, which already mines gold at the deepest levels in the world, will deepen its mining activities from 3600 m to a new record depth of 3910 m. There is great anticipation about the expansion program, especially because of new technology that will contribute to a safer working environment. It includes a simplified hoisting system that will minimise safety risks in conveyance activities. Due to the unique nature of this project, depth below surface and working through a three-tier shaft system, various innovative measures were incorporated into the planning of the endeavour. Special support equipment was designed to reduce cycle times and enable the crews to install the extensive support, prescribed by the mineÆs rock engineering department, right up to the face before every blast. Both declines dip at 23¦. The personnel/material (P/M) shaft is 4.4 m wide x 3.9 m high. This shaft is unique in that the conveyance will have an onboard driver. The rock shaft is 4.5 m wide x 3.6 m high. Rock will be hoisted with two, ten-tonne overturning skips. In both cases, P/M and rock, the winders were designed for the highest duty cycle, which is encountered during sinking.

Tectonic subsidence plots have been calculated for well, extrapolated-well and significant off-well (seismically-based) locations in the Vulcan Sub-basin and adjacent highs (western Timor Sea). The subsidence curves have been normalized to a common datum, the distinctive "near top Permian" marker, and corrected for sediment compaction, palaeobathymetry, eustatic sea-level change and loading effects.Four principal phases of post-Permian basin development are recognised and quantitatively described by integrating the results of the sub-sidence analysis into the regional (e.g. recent Ocean Drilling Program-derived) framework of the tectonic evolution of the North West Shelf. They are1. the Triassic-mid Jurassic Westralian Superbasin intracratonic phase,2. the late Jurassic-early Cretaceous North West Shelf rift phase,3. the mid Cretaceous-Palaeogene North West Shelf subsidence phase, and4. the Neogene-present Timor collision phase. Rapid Triassic tectonic subsidence occurred in an intracratonic setting, possibly subsequent to aborted late Palaeozoic rifting. Intracratonic sub-sidence mechanisms such as deep crustal metamorphism and/or intrustion and regional tectonic compression are invoked in addition to any post-rift thermal subsidence which may have occurred.

Following the success of calcrete sampling at Challenger, calcrete sampling has been widely adopted as the primary exploration technique for gold exploration, in the Gawler Craton. Calcrete is uniformly distributed over large areas and produces discrete gold anomalies. This allows drilling to focus on specific gold anomalous targets. However, despite widespread use of calcrete sampling, very little is known of the origin of calcrete in the Gawler Craton, and the link between calcrete gold anomalies and primary mineralisation. In an attempt to understand this association Lisa Gibbons recently completed an honours project at the Old Well Prospect approximately 45 km SSE of Tarcoola. Her work is part of a collaboration between CRCLEME, MESA and MIM Exploration. At Old Well, a calcrete anomaly (>10 ppb Au)covers an area approximately 7 km x 2 km with a peak value of 97 ppb Au. The study looked at the regolith as a whole, processes of its formation and nature of mineralisation within it. She was able to combine previous calcrete and drilling results with her own observations. The results from this study highlighted problems in relating surface calcrete anomalies to in situ gold mineralisation.

The Australian Broken Hill Consols Mine, situated some 600 yd east of the main Broken Hill line of lode, is noted for its rich ores of silver. In contrast to the vast conformable orebodies of the Broken Hill field, the Consols lode occupies a narrow fissure dipping to the south west at angles increasing from 240 through to vertical and transgressing the strike of the metamorphosed country rock at an oblique angle. This feature, together with the abundance of calcite and siderite and the virtual absence of silicate minerals in the gangue, has led to its classification as an orebody of the Thackeringa type (King, 1953). Recorded production during the period 1890 to 1903 is given as 845,000 oz of silver and 20 tons of lead.The unusually rich silver values of the Consols lode were concentrated at the intersection of the fissure with beds of amphibolite, whereas in the adjacent schists and gneisses the lode became markedly impoverished. From the surface to a depth of some 120 ft extensive surface oxidation had occurred, resulting in the breakdown of siderite and its replacement by limonite and associated manganese oxides.Silver halides, dyscrasite, acanthite and partly oxidised tetrahedrite were the main silver minerals in this zone. With increasing depth the lode material gradually reverted to minerals representative of the hypogene zone.The only previous work specifically on the mineralogy of the Consols lode is that by Smith (1922), one time manager of the mine. Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the East Kimberley area of Western Australia, some 100 km south of the town of Kununurra. The diamondiferous Argyle olivine-lamproite diatreme was discovered in August 1979. Production began in December 1985 at a planned throughput of 3 Mtpa to recover 25 million carats of diamonds. Presently, Argyle is the world's largest producer of natural diamonds and produced over 40 million carats in 1993 from seven million tonnes of lamproite ore treated. Two phases of evaluation have been carried out. The first in 1981-82 was designed to prove around 60 million tonnes of ore to justify the establishment of a mine with a minimum life of 20 years. The second phase, in 1989-90 involved drilling the orebody to greater depths to provide data on which to plan the final pit design. The final pit contained 120 million tonnes of ore at 5.3 carats per tonne (ct/t) grade. Mining of the planned pit will extend the mine life to around the year 2004, following which it is possible that a further cut-back could be mined. There is also the potential for future underground mining. A substantial amount of geotechnical work has been undertaken due to the fact that the pit will be nearly 500 m deep and is located in a mobile zone causing abnormally high residual stresses to occur in the pit walls. The occurrence of low strength rocks at depth in the pit walls further complicated the situation. Hydrogeological investigations were done to determine pit dewatering requirements and to assess the effect of dewatering on pit wall stability.

The knowledge in the field has been reviewed by literature studies, and using experience from personal research in sublevel caving. There is a lot of material regarding gravity flow of fine grained materials in bins, but the theory of flow for these materials are normally not applicable for coarse blasted rock. This study was therefore concentrated towards coarse rock fragments created after blasting in orebodies. The goal for this study was to make a report of known knowledge, and identify what we have to learn more about. The Bergmark-Roos theory, which was a paradigm shift in the science of gravity flow, is today the best mathematical theory for calculation of the drawbody for a homogenous material or when we wish to simulate the mean drawbody for a large number of draws. The Bergmark-Roos theory must however be improved, so it can take into account the flow pipe effect. When this is done it will be possible to construct a 3D computer model for calculation of ore extraction versus amount of loaded ore and waste. It is also necessary to find the 3D shape of the flow cone to be able to calculate the 3D ore rest that normally develops on footwalls. Calculations should be done for the draw on several sublevels including determination of the ore losses and temporary ore rests. First when this computer model is developed optimisation of ore recovery and waste rock dilution can start for a given orebody. The author points out the importance for international co-operation and standardisation of methods for determination of material properties. More field tests and model blasting tests should also be done. When enough knowledge is gathered, a handbook of the optimisation of sublevel and block caving should be written.
