What is the meaning of the Life of a Mine (LOM) if that mine results in a requirement for water treatment in perpetuity? ‘In perpetuity’ is of course a duration with no relationship to a Life-of-Mine or what might rightly be regarded by external stakeholders as a fair and reasonable post-mine recovery period. It exceeds the life span of investors, mine managers and governments, indeed even of capital markets as we know them, and of corporate and individual memories.In mine and mine closure planning, decisions are usually based at least to a significant extent on traditional economic analysis underlain by discounted cash flows (DCF). For investments in income-producing facilities, such as mining development and equipment, and ore-processing plant and equipment, this analysis reflects commercial reality and allows for comparison of competing investments. However, for environmental and social infrastructure, the same analysis using the same input parameters, especially the discount rate applied to cash flows, can lead to a bias against the adoption of best practices for non-investor stakeholders. This paper describes a new mine backfill method based on a newly invented binder with several years of test results from laboratory and on- site applications. The new binder has several advantages over traditional Portland and slag cement binders. One tonne of the new binder can replace two to three tonne of Portland cement when used to consolidate backfill and can result in the same compressive strength within seven days. When comparing backfill slurries of the same pulp density, the new binder attains more volume of in-place backfill mass than Portland cement because of the high crystallisation of water, resulting in tightly filled stopes. The crystallisation of the water provides for less or no de- watering in the backfill stope and easier transportation of the backfill slurry. Pastefill performance can be achieved by using pulp densities typical of a hydraulic backfill and the new binder, all the while transporting with the same ease of hydraulic fill.

A commercial wet scrubber was used in the SIU-Joy dust control laboratory to test several concepts for improving the dust control efficiency of a wet scrubber. The concepts tested included two filter-two-spray systems, hollow and full-cone sprays, horizontal and vertical sprays, different layer filters and addition of surfactant. The optimised scrubber configuration had water-only vertical sprays for pre-wetting coarse dust, and vertical surfactant-laden water sprays for wetting ultrafine particles. This scrubber configuration reduced dust concentrations from 250 mg/m3 to 1.8 mg/m3. In comparison, the conventional scrubber configuration in the feed provides an outlet dust concentration of 3 - 4 mg/m3 in field operation. Upon successful testing and optimisation of parameters in the laboratory, field demonstration of the concepts was conducted at an Illinois coal mine. The optimised scrubber configuration was tested in the field with good results in terms of improved visibility in the face area and reduced respirable and quartz dust concentrations. Additional modifications in the field involved relocation of the scrubber suction inlets from the bottom to the side and changing the water spray configuration on the miner head. These additional changes were based on a conceptualised spatial dust distribution profile in the face area. The results of these laboratory development and field demonstration studies are presented in this paper.

The mining of Australia's rich and diverse mineral resources has been central to the development of the continent by "Europeans" over the past two hundred years. Mining has historically been encouraged (to varying degrees) by development-orientated state governments (the. managers of largely Crown-owned resources) and since Federation, by successive Com- monwealth governments (which have seen mineral development as a means of generating export revenue to fund predominantly social-welfare orien- tated budgets). This marriage of convenience between governments and the mining industry has to date served all parties well. However, Australia's entry to a new world economic environment at a time that community percep- tions are changing (owing to an education-inspired challenge to "old" values) is challenging the hitherto held assumption that mining develop- ment is always aligned with the well-being of the State and community. Issues such as the type and extent of State/Commonwealth government taxation, resource ownership and control, the environment, land use con- flict, the extent and desirability of secondary processing and infrastruc- ture funding are being debated in the public arena. Opponents of mining in the community are well-organised and are well funded, articulate and more importantly, they have effective communication channels with most governments, irrespective of political complexion. Apart from some television-orientated corporate image building and recent efforts by AMIC, the industry's response to this challenge has been unco-ordinated, poorly directed and arguably ineffective. Professionals working in the industry are concerned about the community's perception of themselves and their industry. Recognizing that the Australian democratic system ensures that, in the large, government at its various levels, is reflective of and responsive to the views and aspirations of people, the industry's response must be wide- ranging, equally articulate and couched in a form which is politically acceptable. New objectives in providing information to the public and its educators must be formulated. Moreover, professionals are looking for new directions from industry leaders. The Institute is well placed to facilitate this process.

The fire started in the development section from methane released into the mine through a roof-bolt hole. The date was 8 May 1998. The flames spread quickly as the coal was ignited. After eight hours the Safety Department decided to seal the vertical ventilation shafts and the slopes. The quality of coal in the Esmeralda Mine is very high quality, and Minerales Monclova (MIMOSA) decided to recover the facilities, however, the Esmeralda Mine coals have a very high gas content of 12 m3/t. Immediately after the mine was sealed, MIMOSA staff implemented a plan to monitor the gas levels underground and contacted specialists for assistance in bringing the mine back on-line. During the next 2.5 months, MIMOSA staff and the specialists observed and analysed the gas behaviour supported by a chromatograph. With the results of the observations and analyses, MIMOSA in consultation with the specialists developed a recovery plan based on flooding the area in which fire might have propagated and in which rekindling was highly probable. Those results were analysed by the command centre (Mexican engineers responsible for mine recovery). At the same time MIMOSA trained rescue teams which included miners who had no previous experience in mine recovery operations. By 20 August 1998, the mine command centre had re-opened the slopes seal. Using a æStep-by-StepÆ system, the rescue team began the recovery process by employing cross-cuts and using an auxiliary fan to establish the ventilation circuit. The MIMOSA team advanced into the mine as far as allowed by the water level and was able to recover the main fan. The official mine recovery date was 30 November 1998.

Occurrence data of Tastubian,Sterlitamakian, and Aktastinian (all of Sakmarian Stage of Early Permian) brachiopod genera are analysed by Q-mode cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and discriminant analysis based on presence or absence of genera. Five faunal provinces and their corresponding generic associations persisted throughout the Sakmarian Stage. The additional Sasian Province incorporating the Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes became recognisable in Sterlitarakian and strengthened in òAktastinian, implying a Tastubian-Sterlitamakian rifting event, followed by subsequent northward drift and divergence from Gondwana, and convergence with Laurasia. The nature of Permian 'Tethys' is discussed on the basis of faunal migration and abrupt changes of faunal provinciality in Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes.

In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. Experience has shown that the E-Type multiple indicator kriging (MIK) estimation technique often works well for resource estimation in stockwork mineralisation that contains a mixture of high and low-grade mineralisation types that are difficult or impossible to separate spatially. E-Type MIK, like ordinary kriging (OK) is a smoothing estimator and where data is sparse can result in estimates of grade tonnage curves that do not reflect the true block variability at selective mining unit (SMU) scale. The rank and replace (RR) estimation methodology is designed to reproduce both local block accuracy and true block variability at SMU scale and has shown good results when used with highly skewed unimodal diffusive style mineralisation. This paper examines the use of RR with mosaic style mineralisation typically found in stockworks via a case study using real data from Newcrest’s Telfer West Dome deposit. Resource level estimation results for ordinary kriging (OK), E-Type MIK and RR are compared to close spaced grade control models as the reference reality.Results show that stationarity requirements and declustering can severely impact on the usefulness of the rank and replace technique and that it should only be used where trends are not too strong and data are relatively uniformly spaced. This does not rule out its application to stockwork or mosaic style deposits. However, in this case, the presence of trends and different data densities requires the non-stationary domain to be further broken down into sub domains for the RR technique to be effective.CITATION:Kentwell, D and Finn, D, 2017. The properties of tailings that emanate from laterite nickel processing plants are significantly different to most other mine tailings. They typically comprise a mixture of fine materials that are made up of altered clays, chemical residues and salts. Neutralisation processes that are undertaken prior to tailings discharge result in a high proportion of gypsum in the tailings. The salinity of the pore fluid is commonly higher than 140 g/L of salts, dominated by magnesium sulfate. Hydraulically-placed tailings that undergo solar evaporation typically reach dry densities of less than 1 t/m3 of insoluble solids. In situ water contents after many months of drying may be as high as 80 per cent, and peak undrained shear strengths are unlikely to be greater than 20 kPa.This type of material is not conducive to upstream raising, from both a practicality and overall slope stability perspective. Even at rates of rise of less than 1 m/a, it is difficult to effect upstream raising on unaltered laterite nickel tailings. However, the authors have successfully designed and implemented upstream-raised laterite nickel tailings storage facilities. The upstream raises have been formed from both imported natural materials and air-dried and compacted tailings borrowed from the tailings beaches.Drying and associated strength gain has been achieved through various means of mechanical intervention, repeatedly exposing a zone of tailings to the atmosphere for evaporation. Field trials have been undertaken to optimise the approach, and the findings from the trials have been implemented in practice to allow stable upstream raises to be constructed. Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented. "The requirement for environmental approvals and associated environmental impact assessments (EIAs) is now commonly regarded as a key milestone and body of work during project development. EIAs can be undertaken at various phases during project development, generally either:\ during the scoping or prefeasibility studies, where limited project information is available and the mitigation and management measures of the EIA become a set of criteria and commitments that control project design during the feasibility study, as an iterative approach whereby mitigation and management measures are developed through an integrated process with the engineering team, and measures are included in the feasibility study cost model following the feasibility study, where detailed project design information is available, the cost model is complete, and the EIA is an assessment of a fixed project with limited opportunities for mitigation and management measures to be integrated into engineering design. This paper investigates the advantages of integrating EIA into life-of-mine planning during the feasibility study phase, using the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project (the Project) as a case study. The Tampakan Project is located in the Philippines on the southern island of Mindanao. The Project involves the proposed development of three main areas of infrastructure:a large-scale, open pit copper-gold mine and associated mine site infrastructure (including tailings and mine waste storages, fresh water dam, concentrator, etc) a power station, port and filter plant (PPFP), located approximately 60 km from the mine a pipeline and transmission line linking the mine and PPFP sites.Examples of engineering measures developed through an iterative process to mitigate and manage predicted environmental and social impacts include design of water management infrastructure, modification of the disturbance footprint (eg roads realigned to avoid critical habitat) and realignment of project infrastructure to minimise impacted water catchments.CITATION:Blunt, J and Jones, J, 2012. Waihi Gold Mining Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Normandy Mining Limited, operates the Martha gold mine, located in the township of Waihi, New Zealand. The operation, an unincorporated joint venture, comprises Normandy Mining Limited (67.070/0) and Otter Gold Mines (32.94%). Since gold was first discovered at Waihi in 1878, it has formed a key part of the region's economy. In 1909 the Waihi mine was described in a report to Parliament as æthe most important gold mine in Australasia and one of the greatest in the world.Æ That was a record year for production, with 416,813 tons of ore mined and some 1,120 men employed. Today the mine produces up to 1,250,000 tonnes of ore annually, and the project employs some 234 men and women. In 1999 the value of the gold and silver produced ($59 million) made up 47% of Waihi's estimated GDP. Waihi Gold has made significant contributions to the Waihi economy, community and the Hauraki region as a whole. Since the mine was re-opened in 1987, thousands of local people have benefited from the mine. In 1999, consents were granted allowing an extension to the mine life (the Extended Project) and this will result in a further seven years of economic benefits resulting from mining activity. The Company has undertaken extensive consultation throughout project planning, construction, operations and rehabilitation. Ongoing liaison and involvement with all community sectors, including Tangata Whenua and Iwi, local residents, recreational groups and schools remains an integral part of the operation. Throughout the life of the modern Martha Mine, the Company has actively supported the local community in the form of donations, sponsorships, the provision of amenities, and by participating in community events. A well established environmental team exists at the site. Environmental and community performance is measured by an independent five-assessment process, and the Company is committed to achieving excellence through ongoing improvement programmes and staff awareness. When the mine is closed, the open pit area will be transformed into a recreational lake, and the tailings storage facilities will be rehabilitated to become a combination of wetlands, grassed areas and ponds. Resources will be provided by the Mine to ensure the rehabilitated site remains in a safe and self-sustaining, stable condition in perpetuity. The mine is regarded as a showcase on a world standard of how a modem mining operation can successfully coexist with the nearby community.

The increasing demand for iron ore with low concentrations of trace elements, puts increasing pressure on iron ore producers for high-quality material. Understanding the mineralogy, petrography, chemistry, and mineral association of iron ore deposits is becoming increasingly important to provide iron ore products that meet the ever-increasing standards of steel mills. Limited attention has been paid to documenting new orebodies beyond bulk RC drill chip assays and product specification data. Therefore, limited information is known about the spatial distribution of minor and trace elements at the hand specimen scale, and elemental deportment within different ore and gangue minerals. In this study, samples from high-grade microplaty hematite, supergene-enriched martite-goethite and hematite iron ores are examined for their elemental and mineral associations. These samples contain distinctive minor and trace element distributions, with the mapping of deleterious elements (eg Zn, As, Cu) enabling the deportment and abundance within the ore and gangue minerals to be assessed. Results from this study show a diverse range of minor and trace mineralogy that are present in typical iron ore samples, in abundances below the detection limit of routine XRD scans, that host the deleterious elements, including but not limited to, sphalerite (Zn and S), chalcopyrite (Cu and S), xenotime (P and Y), apatite (P and Ca), cryptomelane (K and Mn), barite (Ba and S), alkaline feldspar (K, Al and Si) zircon (Zr and Si) and chromite (Cr and Al). The presence of these minerals and associated deleterious elements, even at low concentrations, has implications for producers, with the ongoing restrictions and tightening of environmental constraints in shipped iron ore products. By understanding the distribution and location of these elements within the iron ore, steps can be considered to maintain increasingly higher quality iron ore supply around the world.

Kidd Creek mine in north western Ontario is developing phase 1 of the deep mine project for mining between 2100 m and 3100 m below surface. Heat problems were experienced during the 2003 summer in working places about 2300 m below surface. At the time the mine had a æcold stopeÆ for cooling the air supplied to the mine below 1500 m from surface. The æcold stopeÆ is where during winter, ice is created in both the open pit and its connecting airways to the mine and used to cool air in summer. The operation and limitations of the existing cold stope were evaluated and led to the requirement for additional mechanical cooling to be available for the summer of 2004. The first stage of a surface refrigeration plant providing 7.5 MWR of cooling was approved, the compressor set was ordered in early January 2004 and the plant commissioned six months later in early July 2004. Based on the current modifications to the mining plan, further plant expansions are required in 2006 and 2009 leading to a total of 19 MWR of mechanical refrigeration and 8.5 MWR equivalent from the extended cold stope. The refrigeration system is described with emphasis on the specific adaptations necessary to suit Canadian conditions. Additional investigations were; using the refrigeration compressors in winter for heating and, extending the performance of either cold stopes or alternative ice storage systems. The winter use of refrigeration involve removing heat from the mine exhaust air to provide a cooling load and to use the hot water in the condensing circuit to heat the intake air and reduce reliance on mine air heating with natural gas. This paper follows on from an earlier one presented at the Seventh International Mine Ventilation Congress where the background and planning of the mine ventilation and cooling requirements were described for extending the mine at depth to 3100 m.

A considerable volume of work exists in the literature examining the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and sulfide minerals. Broadly, most sulfide minerals are more noble than forged steel grinding media used during comminution, therefore a galvanic couple between the media and the sulfide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the grinding media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulfide minerals thereby affecting their floatability. This paper explores the science behind these corrosion reactions, and provides an explanation of their impact on the pulp chemistry of sulfide mineral slurries and subsequent flotation behaviour. A number of laboratory and plant case studies are used to illustrate the benefits of changing to a more inert grinding media.

Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.

Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database. Backfilling was introduced in 1985 and several potential spin-offs were expected. These included improved local strata control for fall of ground and rockburst conditions, regional benefits in rock mass stability and mine ventilation optimisation.

Seeking to reduce the likelihood of uncontrolled personnel entry into the operating footprint of a dragline, Coronado Global Resources initiated a review of proximity detection systems currently available and equipment interactions in and around dragline operational areas. At the time of the assessment, there were no established personnel proximity detection systems in compliance with functional safety standards for large machinery in Australia. Our primary objective was to guarantee a functionally safe outcome, particularly by implementing a performance-level-rated system in accordance with AS4024 (Safety of Machinery series of Australian Standards). Applying appropriate detection technologies, the goal was to reduce the residual operating risk for machine-to-machine and machine-to-personnel interactions. A comprehensive analysis of available or in-development technologies was conducted, and a layered approach (demonstrated in Figure 1) was adopted to achieve the desired risk reduction by segregating the sensing zones into distinct areas using diverse and disparate technologies consisting of radar (short); light detection and ranging (LiDAR) (medium); and optical (long). To address the potential limitations of each technology, overlapping layered sensing zones were designed. With LIDAR and optical using two distinct artificial intelligence (AI) systems to classify detections, these were specifically trained to handle the unique environments of a mining operation.

There is an increasing trend in the extraction and development of copper resources from complex deposits. The complex deposits pose mineral processing challenges, as they often contain low grade copper ore, relatively large quantity of clay minerals, complex texture, very fine disseminated ore, high amount of pyrite, and high level of impurity elements such as arsenic. With the amount of arsenic in concentrates increasing and with environment, occupational health and safety regulations becoming more restrict, there is a need for a processing method that results in no arsenic emissions and captures all arsenic while immobilizing it in a compound that is stable under a wide range of conditions, so it is suitable for long-term disposal. Some development work has been undertaken to examine the most effective arsenic treatment option for complex orebodies that contain arsenic, but a technically robust and economically viable option has not yet been developed. Previous research has demonstrated the possibility of separating arsenic-copper sulphides from other copper minerals by controlling the potential of the flotation pulp in the single mineral systems. The selective flotation of enargite from copper sulphides in a real complex ore system was studied by Tayebi-Khorami (2016), which is summarised in this paper. CITATION: Tayebi-Khorami, M, 2018.
