There has been a reduction in overall workforce in the mining industry during the current downturn; a corresponding reduction in fatalities and high potential incidents (HPIs) has not been observed. The same contributing factors can be seen in the vast majority of these incidents. These include inadequate supervision and lack of adequate risk assessment. How management structures, trains and leads an operation can have a great impact on eliminating these factors and reducing the risk of fatalities and HPIs.Contractors now account for 41 per cent of full-time equivalent employees in the Queensland mining workforce, and are disproportionately represented in the majority of fatalities and HPIs. Having a clear strategy for how contractors are integrated into the workforce is crucial. This talk will include a discussion of the data as collected in the Department of Mines and Natural Resources department database, and offer solutions based on this data.CITATION:LaBranche, N and Callinan, G, 2016. The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb s/m) between three types of slags (FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx– CaO–SiO2) and molten copper after equilibrium was measured at 1300°C and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of 10-10–10-6 atm. Results showed that for FeOx–SiO2 slag, the LPb s/m increased from 0.024 to 2.57 with pO2 increased from 10-10 to 10-6 atm. The LPb s/m with CaO–FeOx slag was lower than the FeOx–SiO2 slag at the same pO2, ranging between 0.015 and 0.53. Using the FeOx–CaO– SiO2 slag generated LPb s/m values (0.02–1.6) in between. The oxygen partial pressure in the investigated range had no obvious effect on the activity coefficient of PbO (γPbO) which was averagely 0.44, 1.70 and 0.71 for FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slags, respectively. The increases in the (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 mass ratio of the FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slag induced the decrease in the LPb s/m and the increase in the γPbO value. However, the variation in the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio didn’t exert obvious effects.

Two case studies are given: the Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, NSW and the South Walker Creek Mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland.

"The Caijiaying lead zinc mine is located in China, north-west of Beijing, in Hebei Province. The region experiences severe winters, below -35°C, and warm summers, up to 30°C. The mine and concentrator commenced operations in the second half of 2005 with a conventional tailings disposal system consisting of a tailings dam with peripheral ring main discharge and central water recovery. A second similar dam sharing one common wall was added later. In view of the extreme winter conditions tailings lines and ring mains plus spigots, together with return water lines, require insulation and electrical trace heating. The volume of process water trapped as ice in the tailings dam ponds each winter is significant. This seasonal variation presents a major difficulty in the management of process water availability. Although Caijiaying is an underground mine there was no backfill plant at the start of operations. As plant throughput increased more quickly than originally anticipated, tailings storage capacity became a prime concern. The construction of a backfill plant in 2007 reduced the pressure on surface tailings storage area requirements, but as suitable land on which to construct further tailings storage was both expensive and difficult to acquire, a more efficient use of the available area was required. Dry tailings storage, where flotation tailings are filtered to provide an immediate return of process water plus ‘dry’ tailings filter cake for stacking, provided an answer to both the land area required, and the water management difficulties. In-pit tailings storage can provide many advantages when compared to typical above-ground tailings storage facilities (TSFs). As regulations become more restrictive and existing mines expand into new pits, the motivation and opportunities for in-pit tailings disposal is increasing.The Langer Heinrich uranium orebody follows a palaeo-river channel and is mined as an open pit operation. The mine pits intersect two main aquifer systems, one at the surface and one at the base of the orebody/pits. The tailings storage methodology is full in-pit disposal in multiple TSFs for the life-of-mine. Continuity of the initial hydrogeological conditions is incorporated in the design by the use of the pervious surround concept and the reinstatement of the lower aquifer (palaeochannel aquifer) at the base of the pit. Containment embankments are required to facilitate the staging of the TSFs development and are constructed using waste rock liberated during the mining of the pits. The Geita Gold Mine is located 80 km southwest of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania and is 100 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Limited. Open pit mining commenced at Geita in 2000. In 2011, the operation produced 494 000 oz at a cash cost of US$536/oz. This is a significant improvement from 2008, when 264 000 oz were produced at a cash cost of US$742/oz.A period of relatively poor operating performance at Geita was recorded over the period from 2006 to 2009. A period known at Geita as æthe turnaroundÆ commenced in 2009, and has been remarkable to say the least. Over the last couple of years the mine has embarked on a journey, which saw various interventions and initiatives. Among the key initiatives were Project ONE (which focuses on business process framework, systems for people and safety transformation), asset integrity, fatigue management and contract mining of satellite pits.Since the commencement of the turnaround at Geita, gold production has matched market guidance. The mine has returned to positive cash flow on the basis of strong performance on cash management, improved production and increased gold price.This paper explains some of the details of the mine operationsÆ improvements, how they were implemented, their relative contributions to improved mining performance and the path ahead to best practice. Reducing metal prices have forced mining operations to become more efficient and innovate in order to do more with the existing base. Much of this effort has focused on improving the efficiency of load and haul operations. The key to this is to understand and quantify where delays and missed opportunities exist. Metrics such as utilisation of availability, efficiency utilisation and asset availability are helpful indicators of performance; however, uptime-based time usage models and performance analysis tools using productive operating time models help to identify additional improvement opportunities.Phu Kham is a copper-gold mine operated in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos) since 2008 by PanAust Limited. The mine is a single large open pit of 450 m depth, running a fleet of 51 100 t class rigid dump trucks and 300 t and 200 t shovels controlled with the aid of a fleet management system in order to achieve ex-pit material movements of 56 Mt/a.Commencing in late 2014, a range of initiatives were implemented in order to improve the efficiency of the mine haulage fleet. These include hot seating of all operator changeouts via changeout ramps, split shifting of crews to minimise queuing delays, maximising blast volumes and minimising blast event days to reduce blast exclusion delay events including opportune refuelling of equipment during blasting events, inspections of trucks during refuelling events, implementation of a dedicated haul road services team to help reduce wet weather related delays and infrastructure development for haul path efficiency improvements.These and other initiatives have allowed the mine haulage fleet utilisation of availability (UofA) to be sustainably increased from 85 per cent to 97 per cent (see Figure 1), efficiency utilisation to increase from 85 per cent to 90 per cent, and productive operating time (POT) to increase from 73 per cent to 84 per cent. The corresponding increases in efficiency of the haulage fleet has allowed an equivalent reduction of eight haul trucks from the fleet to meet continuing life-of-mine production requirements.CITATION:Monro, K R and Young, S P, 2016. Pipe umbrella support systems – also called canopy tube systems – have been used successfully for tunnelling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970s. Historically, the drilling unit was the limiting factor for pipe umbrella installations – less attention has been paid to pipe couplings and their influence on labour time and load-bearing capacity.This contribution investigates the influence of the type of pipe connection on the load bearing characteristics of a connected pipe and discusses associated influences on design calculations and installation performance. Standard thread connections reduce the effective cross-section and thereby load-bearing capacity in the connection area. To achieve design parameters, over-dimensioning of the un-weakened pipe section is the only way to overcome this limitation. Recently, two new, alternative connection types were designed and developed for connected pipe umbrella pipes. The first one is the nipple coupling, consisting of fitting with a threaded connection that is pressed and welded into the ends of standard tubes. The second type is the squeezed connection, which mechanically connects non-threaded pipe ends, achieved by force-fitted squeezing from the drill rig. Both coupling types have technical as well as operational advantages compared to the common thread couplings, which are the weakest point in the support system.In the following sections significant technical differences are explained, design values given and a site example presented to illustrate the operational advantages of the newly developed coupling?type.CITATION:Volkmann, G M, 2014. "There has been a revolution occurring in underground mining over the last several years, where big headline items such as the Internet of Things (IoT), optimisation, managing data, data mining etc – the list of current catchphrases, goes on. In the end these are nothing new; but the ‘things’ (sensors) are becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to deploy, and the analysis much more powerful as computer processing speeds increase. However, to take advantage of the myriad of devices out there and gain the processing power to analyse and use the data, a reliable ‘conduit’ is needed for that information to be delivered where it can actually be used. That is, a high quality data network.Modern mining is like any other industry in the information age: the access to reliable data is the first, critical step in improving productivity (Stevens, 2015). The convergence of communications onto an IP (Internet Protocol) backbone has been the driving force in enabling the productivity gains in general industry over the last two decades.This paper overviews how this technology has developed as an enabler in accessing productivity and safety benefits, and how it has used access to large amounts of data to manage mining processes underground. Reams of data are useless, but with the reliable receipt, analysis, processing and feedback system in place to use that data, benefits can be realised.Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation, and the importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing. Another emerging driver is the much talked about IoT and data analytics, both dependant on reliable, accurate, high volume data.The author will outline how communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems, and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation and other data hungry systems within the overall mine operation.Mining operations embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to, not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote or automated mining, but also to provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting, particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.How certain mining operations lay the necessary foundations to meet their current requirements, while supporting their visions for a more automated and proactively managed mine, will be explored.CITATION:Kent, D, 2017. Real-time data collection and plant historians are becoming common place in mining and processing plants. This vast quantity of data must be turned into easily accessible and actionable information for all levels of the organisation.Queensland Nickel use a combination of Microsoft and SAP business intelligence tools to collect, cleanse, aggregate and present plant information to the appropriate people for supporting decision making in the business. SAP Business Objects, for visualisation, and SAP MII, for integration, allows complex and accurate metrics to be delivered as real-time dashboards. Designing a rigid data management architecture to segregate the data collection, integration and logic and visualisation into distinct logical layers, allows for rapid report development and greatly assists with IT maintenance, while also minimising the complexity of any customised programming. This type of architecture ensures a common data source for all business reports, ensuring one version of the truth. The past few years at Queensland Nickel have seen process and maintenance engineers spending considerably less time collecting and integrating data and spending more time analysing what is happening in the plant. Real-time reports and dashboards have been developed around the business needs rather than around the data. Two years ago Queensland Nickel introduced an employee bonus scheme based upon meeting monthly performance targets; an easy to use dashboard that allows everyone, from operators through to management, to monitor these metrics day-to-day.

The N3500 orebody is the northern continuation of the 3500 orebody at Xstrata Copper's Enterprise Mine and occurs at a depth of 1.3 to 1.8 km. At the nearby S3500 orebody, extreme deformation was observed in access drives where there was a high number of bedding planes per metre combined with either graphite or talc infill. The observed failure mechanism was largely controlled by the geometry of the inclined bedding submitted to high horizontal stresses. Due to the anisotropic strength and deformation behaviour of the shale rock mass, traditional isotropic methods of geomechanical property estimation based upon GSI are not appropriate. A numerical modelling approach, based upon the distinct element codes UDEC (2D) and 3DEC (3D), has been developed to accurately simulate the failure mechanisms and deformation observed in the initial infrastructure surrounding the N3500 orebody.

Qualitative risk assessment methods are not well suited to considering complex systems and potential interactions of new technology. As part of supporting tier one mining organisations and international industry groups, the author and colleagues have innovated processes to help provide better solutions to sites/companies considering a move to implementing proximity detection and collision avoidance systems. The process identifies required operating states for the system. By applying a combination of research and team-based analyses, a rigorous identification of credible failure modes which could cause these states to be lost, is identified. Finally, required business inputs, expressed in practical terms are distilled from regulator, industry, organisation and site in a way which clearly addresses the failure modes and so retain the required operating states. These business inputs identify improvements for site arrangements (EMESRT levels 1 to 7) before identifying functional requirements for technological collision avoidance solutions (levels 8 for advisory and 9 for autonomous). The paper presents a case study synthesised from multiple sites analyses and will provide guidance on where to find additional resources to assist in making the best possible transition to better equipment and road network solutions.

This paper describes the application of the SBRE framework to model the Olympic Dam deposit, one of the largest copper and uranium deposits in the world. Geostatistical simulations are the best practice for quantifying uncertainty in the mineral value chain and estimating resources. However, these simulations are currently undertaken on an ad hoc basis in the mining industry due to the high requirements in computing resources and capabilities in advanced geostatistics. The SBRE project provides a standard framework to test, build, and run conditional simulation workflows, which has been applied to the Olympic Dam deposit. Conventional geostatistical methods face challenges when modelling the Olympic Dam deposit, such as non-stationarity, non-linear correlations, and a large number of grid blocks to simulate. To address these challenges, a combination of methods was used, including projection pursuit multivariate transform, trend-residual decorrelation, pluri-Gaussian simulations, and turning-bands simulations. Various tools and applications were used to build the model, including in-house developed applications, Autovariogram software (Varify), and the RMSP python library. All computations were accomplished on the AWS cloud using the EC2-Batch service. The final set of simulations was validated using various methods, such as grade-tonnage curves, histograms, swath plots, and variogram reproductions, as well as validation using historical samples back-testing. The study highlights the importance of an automated, modular, and scalable framework in the development of conditional simulation workflows and describes the learning gained from trials of different combinations of methods and software

Assessing and managing instability hazards is an essential activity when working with unstable natural slopes and excavated open pit mining slopes. Slope monitoring has become the standard technique for the management of geotechnical risks associated with mine slope instability hazards. In recent decades, a proliferation of new monitoring techniques such as terrestrial radar, satellite InSAR and LIDAR have become standard operational tools, complementing conventional survey-based monitoring solutions. A reliable monitoring system should identify and record incipient anomalous slope movement. Although the most obvious purpose of a monitoring system is safety related, slope deformation and performance monitoring also enhance the understanding of slope behaviour and assists in improving system design and implementation. For a monitoring system to be considered an effective early warning tool, it needs to operate in real-time and should be linked to the mine’s emergency communication systems. Terrestrial radar systems have been developed that can provide near real-time measurements, at a high level of precision and covering broad areas in all weather conditions. This has had a positive impact on the management of geotechnical risks in operational conditions. The technology adoption of RADAR in mine monitoring has significantly progressed in the last 20 years from technology enthusiasts, to visionaries, to pragmatists to conservative users. However, the increasing adoption of RADAR cannot reduce or remove other monitoring techniques that often have important benefits; even if these technologies cannot be used as a real-time operational tool. An increasing awareness on the importance of combining data from different monitoring techniques to develop a holistic picture of all possible geotechnical hazards is a current industry trend. This is proving to be an excellent foundation for managing hazards associated with slope instability in open pit mines, and is only expected to improve with time with the adoption of new technologies based on big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

To speed up multivariate geostatistical simulation it is common to transform the set of attributes into spatially uncorrelated factors that can be simulated independently. One decorrelation method is the method of minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF), where a two structure linear model of coregionalisation is assumed. The transformation decorrelates the theoretical model exactly, but the actual data are only approximately decorrelated. The MAF transformation can therefore be seen as a special case of a non-orthogonal approximate diagonaliser of a set of symmetric matrices. A more general approach for approximate joint diagonalisation (AJD) has been developed in the context of blind source separation. For these AJD algorithms no assumptions are made beyond symmetry of the individual matrices and so they can be applied to a family of experimental semivariogram matrices. In their application there are no restrictions on the number of structures in the linear model of coregionalisation (LMC) thus removing one of the conditions placed on the subsequent modelling of the spatial structure of the factors. In this paper the general background for the U-WEDGE AJD method is presented. It is shown that the U-WEDGE method achieves better spatial decorrelation than the MAF method. The factors derived from U-WEDGE are simulated using conditional turning bands simulation and then backtransformed to attribute space.

"It is vitally important in projects where the cut-off grade is low that there is no contamination during the sampling and sample preparation process, both in the ore and the waste zones. Failure to identify contamination could have devastating financial consequences for a project. The use of a variety of blank types is essential for ensuring that contamination is identified and eliminated at every stage of the sampling and sample preparation process. This paper examines an instance where an effective assay quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) program was able to identify and eliminate a source of significant multi-element contamination in the prefeasibility stages of an open pit project. This examination includes the: evidence for contamination findings of the investigation process of resolving the problem and correcting the data evidence for both addition of metal and dilution through contamination potential impact on the project had this issue not been dealt with. It was through the use of a combination of blank types that the QA/QC process at Mount Isa Mines (MIM) identified a contamination issue at the first crushing phase of sample preparation. Identification of the contamination allowed MIM to stop assaying activities and work with the laboratory to correct the problem. The sampling program could then be continued with no further doubts about the sample preparation process. Contaminated samples were resampled from retained core. With the continuous monitoring provided by the blanks program, it was possible to ensure that only clean results went into the resource modelling data set. CITATION:Webb, J, 2014. A new high intensity flotation process 'FASTFLOT' is explained and its theoretical advantages compared with other flotation systems are discussed. The results of initial FASTFLOT testing on the zinc roughing circuit at Pasminco Mining, Broken Hill South concentrator are presented and compared to recent plant data. The comparison suggests that on roughing duties, the FASTFLOT process yields superior concentrate grade while requiring less than one third the residence time of a conventional mechanical cell plant. Strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also presented.

The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored.
