Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. Taquari Vasouras potash mine (Vale Fertilizantes) has many interesting features including virgin rock temperatures of 50¦C at depths of 700 m. The mine has a relatively small shaft system with limited ventilation carrying capacity, which was not adequate to exploit the full extent of the deposit. This limitation was overcome by installing two large-scale recirculation systems with underground reconditioning centres. This paper describes this unique mine ventilation and cooling system and some of its history over the past two decades. The two controlled recirculation systems have been operating safely for some ten years and the use of large-scale recirculation has been a fundamental component in the increase of production and extending the mining further-and-further from the shaft centre. The recirculation systems have played a huge role in the mine profitability and comprehensively extending the mine life. The paper also discusses a number of novel design and operating features such as reverse running pumps for energy recovery. The underground chilled water system design required a number of special safety features in order to minimise the risk of water leakage since this could be catastrophic in a potash mine. This paper describes a good example of a mine in which the final ventilation and cooling system design ends up very different to what was envisaged at the greenfields stage.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Funnell, R and de Oliveira, L, 2013. "Recognising that the mining industry is wedded to the break-even cut-off grade rather than a cut-off grade that optimises value, the author examines some perils and pitfalls in the use of break-even grades that lead to what the author calls ‘negatively geared ore reserves’.Negatively geared ore reserves occur when a portion of the ore reserves actually has a negative value and is effectively being subsidised by the more profitable portion of the ore reserves. This situation is generally difficult to detect with the level of information available to the public investor. The ore reserves can still be quite profitable in total, but now possess a level of risk that may not be appreciated.The risk profile (financial risk) of a negatively geared ore reserve is far greater than for a non-negatively geared ore reserve. Like a negatively geared investment property in a falling property market (for readers familiar with the Australian tax minimisation investment strategy), when the price of a commodity falls, a company that possesses a negatively geared ore reserve loses value at a magnified rate relative to a company that has a neutral or positively geared ore reserve. In the extreme case of a major commodity price reduction, as happened with the gold price in mid-2013, the negatively geared ore reserve can easily become negative value in total, not just in part.The negatively geared ore reserve is sometimes intentional – for instance in order to increase published ore reserve tonnages and meet the CEO’s key performance indicators – but is also often unintentional, resulting from various errors in the break-even calculation. Common errors in calculating a break-even grade include using fixed metallurgical recoveries, not including allowances for ideal laboratory versus real plant results, ignoring available operational data and using modal rather than mean parameter values in cost and performance calculations.This paper examines a common value distribution profile in many ore reserves and the effect of common break-even grade errors on this profile.CITATION:Poniewierski, J, 2016. Pit lakes may form when open cut mining leaves a pit void that then fills with ground and surface waters. This often replaces terrestrial ecosystems that existed prior to mining with an aquatic ecosystem, affording an opportunity to improve regional aquatic biodiversity values through targeted aquatic restoration (McCullough and van Etten, 2011). Restoration theory provides guidance when restoring disturbed systems towards landscapes that are of regional value and relevance. But how do we identify a restoration target for a novel aquatic habitat that only exists in the new post-mining landscape? This paper presents a process of first identifying and then surveying local representative aquatic systems, to provide a direction for pit lake restoration efforts and achievement criteria for pit lake relinquishment, using a case study from a sand mining operation amongst wetlands in south-western Australia.The company mines silica sands following mechanical removal of topsoil and then extraction of the ore from below the watertable by dredging. Assessment of wetland and riparian vegetation was achieved through the establishment and measurement of temporary monitoring transects across five natural wetlands in the Kemerton area. Several more regional wetlands were also visited and observations made to supplement and validate these data.Distinct vegetation zonation was found across each wetland, although typically wetland basins were unvegetated or filled with younger woody plants with patchy distributions. Fringing riparian vegetation consisted of few species (commonly the paperbark Melaleuca rhaphiophylla and the sedge Lepidosperma longitudinale), but community composition and structure were variable between wetlands. The pattern of vegetation seen across natural wetlands was best explained by topography and soil chemistry, with low lying wetland areas more likely to experience regular flooding and accumulate organic matter and nutrients.In conclusion, where they are available, regional natural waterbodies may constitute the best valid restoration goal. Nevertheless, the goal may need to consist of a range of closure design opportunities, rather than a single target.

Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) is undertaking a large research project involving partners from industry, universities and government, which aims to develop the necessary chemical and structural understanding of geopolymer materials made from waste products for them to be used to capture a significant market share of the concrete business for a given industrial region. We are investigating the suitability of a range of soluble silica-bearing waste streams for use as geopolymer concrete feedstocks. In order to utilise a variety of waste streams, either singly or blended, an understanding of the role of secondary metal ions (Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, etc) in the geopolymerisation process is essential. A range of experimental and analytical techniques is therefore being used to better understand the structure-chemistry-property relationships of geopolymers. Currently, we are investigating geopolymers made from a variety of waste streams (fly ash, kaolinite, red mud, etc) available in the Kwinana Industrial Region, Western Australia. This paper will detail how the basic scientific research underpinning the project is vital if waste streams of varying composition are to be successfully used in a commercial concrete product and the regional synergies required to develop geopolymers from waste streams.

The Perseverance deposit is the most southerly known economic copper/gold deposit within the Cobar gold field. The deposit is situated approximately 12 km to the south-southeast of Cobar and is essentially blind to surface with the top of economic mineralisation occurring 750 m below ground level.Based on the December 2010 resource estimate (inclusive of reserves and net of depletion) the deposit contains 3 011 000 tonnes at 6.1 g/t Au and 0.90 per cent Cu (590 000 oz of gold and 28 000 tonnes of copper). The deposit is comprised of four principal lenses, the Perseverance, Hulk, Zone B, and Hercules lenses. In excess of 90 per cent of the known resource tonnes are contained within the Perseverance and Hulk lenses. The deposit is shear related and hosted within lower Devonian rocks of the Cobar Basin. The competency contrast of rhyolites juxtaposed against sediments by the Peak-Perseverance shear is the principal control on mineralisation. Both the Perseverance and Hulk lenses are primarily hosted by brecciated rhyolites juxtaposed against Chesney formation sediments across the Peak-Perseverance shear. This faulted rhyolite sediment contact roughly defines the global orientation of the deposit. The Perseverance lens continues within the shear for up to several hundred metres beyond the extent of the faulted rhyolite sediment contact. Mineralisation within the shear beyond the faulted rhyolite contact zone is hosted by sheared silicified sediments. The Perseverance lens remains open at depth and to the south.The Zone B and Hercules lenses, which are significantly less important in tonnage terms, are hosted by rhyolite breccias within the main body of the rhyolite and appear to be only tenuously related to the Peak-Perseverance shear. Within the Perseverance lens, the presence of northeast trending high grade breccia veins developed oblique to the north-south trending shear system has led to the development of steeply north plunging high grade ore shoots within a globally north-south trending mineralised domain. These high grade shoots have limited horizontal continuity but significant down plunge extent.The presence of coarse gold and the resulting strongly skewed nature of the gold grades, in conjunction with controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the mineralised domain, has led to predictive difficulties regarding stope performance.Strong heterogeneity of the gold content of the ore and geological controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the global trend of the mineralisation impose a set of difficulties which sound geological control is helping overcome.

The Wonawinta silver project near Cobar in NSW is under development by Cobar Consolidated Resources Limited (CCR). RMDSTEM Limited is part of the owner’s team for feasibility, design, engineering, construction and commissioning.With a 51Moz resource CCR is one of the largest pure silver players in Australia. A probable reserve of 14.3Moz has been defined for a mine life of approximately five years. The silver mineralization is contained in host rock composed of clays and oxidized limestone. The ore also contains on average 1.3% lead as cerussite, and other minerals. A simple circuit consisting of slurrying of the ore, gravity treatment of the coarse fraction to recover lead, silver extraction using CIL, elution and the Merrill Crowe silver recovery process, has been developed.The “value engineering” approach to this development pioneered over the past decade by RMDSTEM has meant that RMDSTEM has delivered the bankable feasibility study at a cost of $0.07 per resource ounce. It is highly cost effective making efficient use of shareholders funds as well as being very time efficient. This paper describes the application of the value engineering approach to the development of the Wonawinta project.

An automatic control system of a longwall roof support is dis-cussed. Hydraulic automatic control systems for longwall roof support have not met all requirements for such systems. Utilization of standard hydraulic elements to form a system that would-comply with all demands leads to a very complicated structure with a large number of hydraulic hoses within and between adjacent supports. So, only simplified systems have been made. This paper describes the multifunctional valve that per-mits realization of any desired logic functions, while maintaining a com-pact form, and analyses its application as a fully hydraulic automatic control system of a roof support.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

The paper describes a spreadsheet system that enables selection of projects and companies that meet the user's corporate exploration and/or acquisition philosophy. A regularly maintained commercially available database has been used as the basis for this system. It provides an easily accessible efficient com- prehensive search method. The technique enables ranking by various criteria, both technical and financial, to provide groups of projects/companies that are of interest. Initially, target size parameters such as reserves, production and mine life are applied together with geological criteria such as age and deposit type; the significance of the targets in the context of the Australian gold industry is addressed.

After review of the status of research on optirnisation of retreat longwall faces it is argued that an acceptable optimisation model must be based upon realistic cost data that take into account not only the face costs, but the total panel costs. These include the cost of development, face cost, removal and installation cost. The determined optimum length of a retreat longwall face is based upon a realistic model and actual costs.Parameters that influence the optimum face length have been varied over wide limits to allow determination of the sensitivity of the model and the effect of the parameters on the optimum face length. It is concluded that for medium production rates and medium system availability, the optimum face length of a retreat longwall face under Australian conditions lies between 180 and 220 metres.

The Yanacocha District is located 20 km north of the city of Cajamarca, in the Northern Andean Orogenic belt of northern Peru.Gold production may have occurred as early as Incan times (Paverd, 2000), but modern exploration that began in the 1960s targeted only copper and silver. Newmont Mining Corporation, BRGM and Compa±fa de Minas Buenaventura began exploring for gold in 1983, with Newmont as operator.Initial drilling took place in 1985. By 1992 a reserve of 1.28 million ounces was reported (Teal et al, 2002).Production began at the Carachugo deposit in 1993.Current reserves are 31.7 million ounces at $US 325 per ounce at a grade of 1.03 ppm (Newmont Annual Report, 2003).The operating company, Mineral Yanacocha SRL (Newmont 51 per cent, Buenaventura 44 per cent and International Finance Corporation five per cent) produced 2.85 million ounces in 2003, making Yanacocha one of the largest gold mining operations in the world. The district is made up of a series of epithermal, high sulfidation style gold deposits and one gold-rich gravel deposit (La Quinua), aligned in a NE trend.La Quinua is not discussed in detail in this paper. The bedrock deposits are hosted in a Miocene volcanic package, the Yanacocha Volcanic Complex that also trends NE.Re gional NW striking Andean faults intersect the NE striking Trans-Andean Chicama-Yanacocha structural corridor (Turner, 1997), localising the district mineralisation. These two structural orientations dominate the district, controlling breccia and intrusion locations, and gold mineralisation. Discontinuous EW oriented fracture zones are interpreted as extensional and locally are important in controlling gold mineralisation.

The extraction of groundwater to produce gas from coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs has highlighted the opportunity for beneficial uses of groundwater in Australia. This paper presents an assessment of alternate groundwater modelling approaches that can be used for assessment of one beneficial use option, that of injection. This assessment examines the outcome of the use of different simulation methods on predictions of hydrodynamic behaviour.In this paper, a simplified hydraulic concept of a multi-aquifer system within the hypothetical injection field was used to investigate the hydrodynamic behaviour of injection into the Precipice Sandstone. Comparisons were made through the analysis of a Theis 3D analytical solution with 2D and 3D numerical solutions. The paper discusses the different solution methods and the impact of these on predictions of pressure and flux. Differences in 2D and 3D solutions result in implications if planning injection as a beneficial use of water. For example, the 2D solution resulted in faster and higher injection pressure build-up when compared to the 3D solutions. The 2D modelling could result in either plans that require higher capital expenditure for a greater number of wells in order to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure or a reduced injection rate. Meanwhile, the 3D modelling with sensitivity analysis could result in planning for lower capital expenditure for fewer wells required to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure. Central to this development is the role of visualisation, a crucial element in mining digitalisation. This paper aims to develop a data-driven visualisation solution for the construction of mining digital twins, highlighting how this innovation revolutionises the representation of physical mining environments. It spotlights the shortcomings of conventional visualisation methods, particularly their inability to accurately depict complex underground environments and their predominantly historical orientation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel, data-driven approach. This approach extensively utilises CAD files, encompassing data from geological surveys to intricate mine plans, thereby significantly elevating the precision of digital twins. It supports real-time updates and enables flexible interaction with a variety of data types. Moreover, it introduces a comprehensive data diagram alongside the adaptation of a 3D tile index. This strategy ensures the efficient rendering of extensive mining environments, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive digital twin model. In conclusion, the implementation of data-driven visualisation in the construction of mining digital twins marks a pivotal advancement in the industry’s digital transformation. It promises a more detailed, accurate, and dynamic depiction of mining operations.

The European Union has listed vanadium (V) as one of the critical raw materials for the transition to a future green society, as stated in the Critical Raw Material Act, written by Grohol and Veeh (2023). In the steelmaking industry based on V-containing iron ore, V is a possible by-product from the slag. A requirement for slags to be suitable for V extraction is a V content preferably above 8 wt per cent as V2O3 and a phosphorus (P) content below 0.1 wt per cent as P2O5. Hence, it is important to keep V in the slag phase while the P is moved to the metal phase during the steelmaking process.

QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

Globally, it is anticipated that the mineral sands industry will enter a period of short supply. Demand for both titanium dioxide and zircon is forecast to continue increasing, with new projects needed to come on-stream to fill the supply gap. Victoria is well placed under this scenario as a source due to the high quality of its mineral assemblage, its excellent resource grade and the globally significant size of its mineral sands resources.Australia’s mineral sands rich Murray Basin remains under-developed, especially at its extensive Victorian margins. Development to date has not progressed adequately for the reasons of technology difficulty, history of competition with other jurisdictions and the absence of a platform that requires development as a consideration for security of tenure. Victoria’s mineral sands potential is not just about the Murray Basin, in addition, there have been discoveries in the Gippsland Basin and prospective sites in the Gippsland Basin remain under-explored. Key problems included the lack of available ground for potential developers and the intellectual property of solutions to technological problems associated with the fine grained mineral deposits belonging to a previous developer (with patents now expired).As such, the timing is right to re-visit the potential of the Murray Basin as a site for long-term development with high returns based on current and predicted prices.In order to understand why Victoria’s earth resources in general, and mineral sands in particular, remain under-explored and undeveloped, the Department of Primary Industries initiated an internal review of its role in encouraging and supporting investment in the earth resources sector.As a result, the Victorian Government has committed to taking action to encourage effective ground turnover and acknowledges that a new focus on engagement with industry is needed to bring new investment to the State. The revision of the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 provides an opportunity for the government to better align its legislative processes with industry project lifecycles and facilitate access to valuable resources that currently remain undeveloped.Victoria has a track record in assisting projects reach development stage. Iluka currently has two operations in the State in addition to its mineral separation plant that is capable of processing HMC from its South Australian operations. Iluka is expected to ramp up its Murray Basin Stage 2 operations with the WRP mine scheduled to come on line in early 2012. Meanwhile, Astron is actively seeking partners for its Donald Mineral Sands project. The project is becoming increasingly attractive given the recent price hike in zircon; Astron has access to an estimated five to 6 Mt of zircon in its Donald WIM 250 deposit.Given its substantial and valuable mineral sands endowments, the State of Victoria should sensibly be the centre of future investment in project development. However, as previously mentioned this is currently not the case. The Government is therefore committed to implementing new measures that protect security of tenure but ensure that genuine companies can access endowments where they have a clear intent to work those resources.
