It is proposed to consider a new access, mining and hoisting system for underground deposits, as an alternative to the commonly used decline or vertical shaft access. The proposed system offers fundamental improvements in gathering of exploration data, reduction of capital expenditure and significant savings in mine operating costs. The cost reductions are achieved through:superior orebody definition by Supersucker winzing on ore prior to the commencement of capital development; considerable reduction of capital development in waste; full capitalisation on all benefits of a raisebored excavation; introduction of rubber tyred skip and rubber tyred Mine Rapid Response Vehicle; introduction of simplified ore handling system and reduction of underground mobile diesel fleet; and introduction of minimum maintenance shaft concept. The system is applicable to deposits ranging from shallow, low dip angle, narrow vein, high-grade to bigger, massive type vertical mineralisations accessed from the surface, preferably from the bottom of an open pit; it is also suitable as a down dip extension of an existing underground mine. The system is highly conducive to mine automation and emerging trend aimed to increase the ratio of mined metal/mineral to mined waste. It offers substantial reduction in diesel exhaust gas emissions to the mine atmosphere.

When I was first asked to give a paper on work-life balance in the mining industry I was both excited and aware of the incongruity of my position. I have never worked in mining operations nor have I had any experience that approximates the on-site lifestyle. IÆm not really an adventurer or a traveller, I prefer writing and research to hands-on activities and IÆve never worked further than twenty minutes away from home. The perspective I offer is thus largely an objective one. I say largely since I grew up in a family where my parents work arrangements involved long-distance commuting; my dad continues to work FIFO at a coalmine in Blackwater until this day. Perhaps my tortoise-like existence is a rebellion against his flighty movements. The analysis I will be presenting today draws together a variety of sources, from member anecdotes and research on FIFO and work-life balance to the popular philosophy writings of a bald Englishman with a French name. I am speaking of the famous writer, Alain de Botton, whose television show æThe Consolations of PhilosophyÆ you may have seen on the ABC. Work-life balance is a term that gets a lot of mileage in corporate brochures and at breakfast seminars. But like many terms that get bandied around in the human resources circuit, from æteam synergyÆ to æperformance optimisationÆ, I am frequently perplexed as to what it actually means. Corporate websites are at pains to emphasise the high priority that they place on the needs of the whole person. Yet in terms of substantive content, a commitment to work-life balance often seems to translate into little more than the option to take a few morning yoga classes in exchange for working a seventy-hour week. As extended work hours have taken their toll, leading to high attrition of professionals across all industries, employers are increasingly expending resources to discover just what lies behind this buzz word. The challenge for companies is to find meaningful strategies to help employees better integrate different aspects of their lives in a new era of work, as employees are sending the message that they are not willing to play work, social life and leisure off against each other in a zero sum game.

This paper presents an empirical design methodology that is based on successful US roof support systems using both primary and secondary support in coal mining entries and intersections. The recent nationwide dramatic reduction of roof fall rates, especially in areas with weaker roof, can be directly correlated to the effectiveness of the roof support systems. A large database of roof fall histories at several mines is used to define the approximate boundaries of three modes of roof support with respect to roof strength as classified by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and in situ vertical stress as indicated by the depth of cover. These roof support classifications are: • Suspension, where roof bolts mainly provide skin control for strong roof. • Beam building or reinforcement, where a roof of moderate strength can be supported by roof bolts only. • Supplemental (secondary) support, where the primary support by roof bolts may be augmented by several secondary support systems, eg cable bolts, trusses, additional roof bolts or standing supports. The Primary Support Rating index (PSUP) captures the capacity of the primary roof bolt system as a function of the actually implemented roof control plan, ie roof bolt length, roof bolt density, and roof bolt capacity, while it does not consider the type of bolt. The actual PSUP value is compared against a suggested PSUP value derived from statistical analysis of US case histories. Where secondary support is indicated, the expected rock load determines the necessary capacity of the secondary support system. A new (free) software package, Analysis of Mine Roof Support (AMRS), implements the design methodology and also allows comparison with other international indices such as the Reinforcement Density Index (RDI), the PRSUP, etc.

A novel explosive formulation that substitutes the use of ammonium nitrate (AN) with hydrogen peroxide (HP) as the main oxidising agent has been developed and tested as part of an Australian Coal Industry Research Program (ACARP) project. The main objective was to provide a step-change solution that has the potential to completely eliminate NOx fumes in blasting. The development of this HP/fuel-based explosive started with a comprehensive detonation characterisation program, consisting of unconfined velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements of samples at different diameters, densities and void sensitisation techniques. VOD results showed that the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures behaved similarly to non-ideal commercial explosives; in that way mixtures could be tailored to achieve specific detonation performance targets. The next stage of testing in this development involved preliminary confined tests to evaluate the rock breakage potential of the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. Fully instrumented single-hole tests were conducted in a limestone quarry. Results from these preliminary trials confirmed the rock breakage performance of HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. The confined VOD measured in one of the tests was 5100 m/s in a 102 mm diameter blasthole at a density of 0.96 g/ml. The corresponding borehole pressure measurement of this HP charge was 2.61 GPa with a detonation temperature of 2921°C. Based on near-field accelerations, both HP and ANFO charges displayed similar attenuation characteristics in the test conditions. Post-blast observations indicated that the breakage performance of the HP mixtures clearly reflected the in-hole detonation performance measurements obtained, confirming the ability of these explosive mixtures to both fragment and effectively displace the rock mass under evaluation. Further research work continues with the future commissioning of a prototype mixing and delivery unit, the successful completion and analysis of data from multiple-hole trials, and further characterisation work associated with product stability, reliability and performance under different geotechnical conditions.CITATION:Onederra, I and Araos, M, 2015. A new approach to more reliably predict the Ni (and Fe, Mg) composition of Ni laterites was tested for RC samples from the (siliceous) oxide–style, Siberia North deposit, Kalgoorlie Nickel Project (KNP), in the north-eastern Yilgarn (WA) using partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis of diffuse reflectance spectra over the 380 - 2500 nm wavelength range with a multi–element chemistry data set. PLSR cross-validation models were developed to predict FeO, MgO and Ni contents in composite samples with bulk composition limits of >0.08 wt per cent Ni and <6 wt per cent MgO. Calibration and validation models showed a strong, linear trend for predicting FeO and, to a lesser extent, Ni content, whereas PLSR models for predicting Mg content were less reliable. This reflected the prevailing mineralogy and associated element deportment within the oxide laterite profile. For example, Fe and Ni distribution is controlled by relatively few minerals, predominantly goethite and, to a lesser extent, the Fe3+-bearing smectite, nontronite. Magnesium is associated with a range of Mg-bearing minerals, some of which are compositionally complex (eg serpentine, talc, chlorite, smectite and carbonates). Magnesium chemistry alone does not reflect the varied mineralogy of samples with relatively high (5 - 6 wt per cent) MgO contents, which can be spectrally distinct. Hence, samples with similar Mg contents, though comprising Mg-bearing minerals with distinct reflectance spectra, were difficult to model (eg smectite versus Mg-carbonates). The findings of this study demonstrate that characterisation of Ni laterite composition may be achieved as part of routine logging of either drill chips or diamond drill core using PLSR analysis, but that a detailed understanding of the mineral-element association is essential for reliable predictive analysis. This has particular relevance to characterising the geometallurgy of Ni laterites, especially where deposits may be classed as the same type, but have distinct compositional and mineralogical differences.

The trend of global copper production has prospectively increased over time. Based on typical mined ore grades, 1 t of copper ore generates approximately 6–10 kg of copper, which requires much energy, usually in the form of metallurgical coke. Copper production using carbon as a fuel and reductant contributes up to 0.3 per cent to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As a result, research into decarbonisation processes applicable to reducing low-grade copper sulfide ores, copper oxides, electronic wastes and other alternative complex Cu-rich materials has increased. Alternative fuels for reducing carbon-rich emissions in pyrometallurgical copper processing include methane, ammonia, biomass, solar and wind power, but in recent times increased focus has been on hydrogen as a potential fuel and reducing agent for materials such as oxidised copper scrap, Cu2O/CuO and Cu-rich slags/e-wastes. From a thermodynamic perspective, hydrogen exhibits a significantly more negative standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) than copper oxide making it a suitable reductant and the exothermic thermal effect from reaction between hydrogen and Cu2O/CuO may be used to control process parameters. These characteristics renders hydrogen an ideal gas for reducing copper oxides and copper-containing slags/e-wastes. This review article assesses previous research on utilising hydrogen for producing and refining copper from primary and secondary feed materials.

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density hackfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: I. Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the 'traditional' approach to the preparation of pastefill. 2. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producing paste/high density backfills. 3. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach. This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material- No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mincsin Canada.

The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit is located at elevations of up to 3100 metres above sea level, in the Central Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, 35 km NNW of the Grasberg porphyry deposit. Wabu is a grass-roots discovery in an area with no previous gold mining history or record of gold mineralisation. A geological resource of 117.26 million tonnes at an average grade of 2.16 g/t Au (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) has been defined to-date. Mineralisation is hosted within a skarn occurring along the southern boundaries of the Late-Miocene age monzonite-diorite Pagane intrusive complex. The intrusive complex occurs in the footwall of a major EW structure, the Derewo fault, which displays sinistral strike-slip and reverse fault movement. The Derewo fault separates Derewo metamorphic units to the north from platform sediments of the Australian craton to the south. The skarn has a strike length of 6 km and is up to 1.5 km wide. It is developed within calcareous shelf sediments of the Tertiary New Guinea limestone group and is dominated by prograde garnet development. Gold mineralisation was deposited during retrograde alteration and is directly associated with arsenophyrite and bismuth minerals. Retrograde alteration is distinguished by a sequence of clinopyroxene , magnetite, epidote and hornblende, biotite and chlorite and lastly carbonate. Gold is associated with the biotite/ chlorite phase together with sulphides and precipitated as the result of fluid mixing. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit was identified in April 1990 during a regional program of helicopter assisted stream sediment sampling of -80 mesh (180 microns) fraction and panned concentrate sampling. The initial discovery sample site was situated 15 km down stream from the deposit and returned 1.49 ppm Au for the stream sediment sample and 138 ppm Au for the panned concentrate sample. A regional airborne helicopter magnetics survey, conducted in early-1992, helped defined the main magnetite associated skarn zone and the extent of associated igneous rocks. Detailed follow-up commenced in May 1992 and consisted of detailed mapping, soil sampling and ground magnetics prior to drilling the first hole in October 1992. Drilling to-date has delineated a contained geologic resource of 8.1 million ounces of gold and potential exists for a larger resource.

In April 2000 Mount Isa Mines installed hoist ropes of a new design on the double-drum winder at their P49 shaft. The ropes, CASAR Duroplast, were about three times as expensive as the previously used triangular strand ropes. The P49 shaft is situated at Mount Isa MinesÆ George Fisher Mine, located some 30 km north of Mt Isa. This shaft used the tried and proven 6 x 33 triangular strand style ropes. The rope life attained by these ropes at the time was acceptable due to many years of satisfactory performance. The following study indicates the improvement of service life using CASAR Duroplast rope in P 49 shaft, which depends on shaft and winder parameters of that particular shaft and cannot necessarily be generalised to other shafts.

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. The Ekati Diamond MineÖ is CanadaÆs first diamond mine and is located 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. The development of the mine supports sustainable development through the integration of environmental, economic and social considerations with the broad aim of minimising environmental impacts while maximising opportunities and benefits to northern residents and northern businesses. The environmental assessment and regulatory processes for the Ekati Diamond MineÖ were the most extensive seen in the NWT to that date; in Canada only uranium mines receive more attention. In addition to the regulatory requirements, an Environmental Agreement was negotiated with the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories to address environmental concerns not covered by existing legislation and regulation. Under the agreement an Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency was set up to oversee the regulatory process and implementation of the Environmental Agreement. Environmental stewardship is implemented through an Operational Environmental Management Plan, part of which includes effects monitoring programs for wildlife and aquatics where available traditional ecological and scientific knowledge are integrated to broaden our understanding of the tundra environment. A Socio-economic Agreement was concluded with the Government of the Northwest Territories to maximise employment and business benefits to the north. Voluntary and confidential Impact Benefits Agreements (IBAs) were also negotiated with four Aboriginal groups who use the area where the mine is located. The intention of the IBAs is to foster development initiatives and a partnership thereby helping to insure that benefits from the project flowed to the Aboriginal groups despite a lack of settled land claims in the region. All these were completed before commercial production in October 1998. Employment targets of 62 per cent residents of the Northwest Territories and 31 per cent Northern Aboriginal have consistently been met thereby ensuring benefits flow to residents of the Northwest Territories. In 2000, $316 million was spent to support operations at the Ekati Diamond MineÖ. Of this, 82.2 per cent of total spending and 26.6 per cent total northern spending was northern and northern Aboriginal businesses, respectively. The environmental and socio-economic monitoring results are reported annually to the responsible government agencies and potentially affected Aboriginal groups. To date, there have not been any significant adverse environmental effects documented and socio-economic targets have been met.

Barrick Gold Granny Smith Mine is currently undergoing conversion from an open cut operation to an underground mine at the Wallaby deposit. The underground project commenced in 2005 with the development of the reserves immediately below the pit and is now currently entering a production ramp-up phase for mining of these two initial surfaces below the pit. With increasing gold prices the owner has been forced to re-evaluate the underground project and has decided to investigate the potential of a deep level mine. This deep level underground mine presents a collection of challenges with the most notable being exploitation of a series of well separated near horizontal lodes ranging in thickness from less than 1 to 20 m. A variety of room and pillar mining methods are employed for extraction with careful consideration to resource recovery and pillar design for long-term stability. Compounding these deep level challenges is a need to accelerate mine level development to maintain the production profile of the mine. This paper describes the challenges, key learnings and outcomes of the studies undertaken to date associated with this project.

The requirement for rapid vertical development for underground ventilation is often a factor when dealing with dynamic mine plans, with short vertical developments being used to optimise ventilation systems. In an effort to increase the safety and efficiency of the constructions, a simple and effective sinking methodology is required that is both adaptable and repeatable. A modified shaft construction methodology is proposed that attempts to minimise risk to the personnel as well as be cost-effective. Readily available equipment is used to ensure adaptability to the various environments and shaft parameters.One of the greatest risks of shaft sinking is having personnel working suspended over open cavities or underneath suspended loads. Removing this risk, by ensuring all construction is done from solid ground, allows for safer sinking operations. As the process is repeatable, familiarity and confidence in its construction sequence will increase with each successive sink.A trial sink is performed with a 3.6 m diameter, 20 m deep shaft. The shaft was excavated using a conventional strip-and-line philosophy, with the shaft then being lined from the collar via the use of large diameter corrugated steel culverts. The annulus between the steel culverts and shaft excavation is then filled with a concrete mixture to secure it in position.The new process was successful, with no personnel at any time during the process being suspended above an open excavation. The installation had relatively low capital and operational costs and was completed faster than an equivalent, conventional concrete-lined shaft construction. Therefore when compared to conventional shaft-sinking methods, this process can be considered safer, more efficient and relatively cost-effective.Further research is required to determine whether this method can be expanded to larger vertical developments.CITATION:Markoski, R and Grealish, P, 2014. The Morning Star Gold Mine presents an example of a prolific operation with considerable historical records, mine workings, drill hole logs and countless plans from greater than 20 adjacent mines which have now been consolidated to form the current project. Implementation of 3D computer modelling in the planning stages has provided an additional tool to integrate and refine geological models as a guide to some exploration strategies. It has allowed for a re- interpretation of the host rock units, dimensional constraints, new exploration extensions and provisional resource modelling. The initial consideration of this project was to integrate 135 years of mining history into a single database. Each historic mining area had an unrelated mine grid, often established parallel to the long axis of their main stopes; some were based on magnetic or true north. Survey plans were in chain, imperial or metric units. Through the manipulation and rotation of old grids, previously unrelated mine workings began to form continuous mineralised zones, with unmined portions still remaining in between the existing development. Furthermore the current drillhole database of >433 holes showed numerous confirmatory intersections of new mineralisation. A series of tiered tables were created within a relational database to derive guidelines for assessing data to attribute a Mineral Prospectivity Value [MPV] based on key indicators of mineralisation. Indicator logging now forms the basis of geological descriptions.

The cover (cap) over the tailings pit at Nabarlek uranium mine must be structurally stable as it will act as a barrier to radon gas emission and have to contain other long-lived radionuclides. Structural stability is primarily an issue of erosional stability in the context of a design life of thousands of years. The primary agent of erosion is fluvial, dominated by rainwash, overland flow, filling and gullying in the local area. Other agents of erosion are of less concern although biogenic agents of erosion (eg termites and windthrow) may enhance fluvial activity. Several methods may be used to assess erosional stability. They fall into two main categories, namely erosion modelling and geomorphic modelling. The former is illustrated by the Universal Soil Loss Equation in which parameters describing aspects of the geotechnical and hydrological properties of the rehabilitated surface are used as input for the modelling of erosion rates. The latter is illustrated by estimates of gully and valley erosion using empirical models. Estimates of the erosion rates and stability of the Nabarlek cover are presented. The two main techniques are complementary and it is argued that rehabilitation design must make use of both approaches when estimating erosion and geomorphic stability. More recent developments in geomorphic modelling using numerical techniques incorporate both approaches.

"This paper details the events leading up to a slope failure that occurred at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and the remediation method executed using rope access specialists.n January 2016, KCGM Fimiston Pit experienced a double bench wall failure where approximately 80 000 t of material fell from the wall that blocked access to a ramp and caused minor damage to equipment.The event was triggered by heavy rainfall and occurred along unfavourable eastward dipping structures that lead into weaker shale/porphyry bands, which in turn left more material on the face. A remediation plan was formulated that would allow for the continuation of open pit operations while a full geotechnical assessment of the failure area could be conducted. This was accomplished by means of rope access specialists who abseiled down the wall and blasted off the remaining overhang using a portable drill rig and prepackaged explosives.This paper provides a brief overview of the KCGM operations, how the instability was identified and monitored, details of the failure event, outcomes of the geotechnical assessment and details on the remediation work.Citation:Graf, C and Sullivan, R, 2016. In March 2003, Rio Tinto Coal AustraliaÆs (RTCA) new Hail Creek open cut coal mine commenced operations in the Bowen Basin. Hail Creek is a two-seam strip mining operation utilising two 90 m3 draglines and a fleet of excavators and trucks to remove the overburden. All overburden at Hail Creek is blasted prior to excavation. The mine conducts its own drill and blast operations while engaging Dyno Nobel for the provision of explosives supply and loading truck (bulk explosives vehicle û BEV) services. This arrangement was favoured over outsourcing the entire blasting function to a contractor. Subsequent to a value engineering review, the mine set about developing and implementing a blasting operation that did not rely on the need to store bulk quantities of ammonium nitrate on site. There were advantages identified in doing this, in particular the reduction of capital expenditure required and reduced exposure to a number of recently introduced security requirements. This approach also makes sense operationally. The establishment of reload facilities for the BEV close to the blasting location, where turnaround times are kept to a minimum, increases the productivity of the BEV. For this strategy to be successful the logistics of ammonium nitrate supply into the blasting operations has to be well planned and thoroughly executed. This means a robust planning and forecasting arrangement needs to be established with the supplier and transporters of the ammonium nitrate. To date, 80 million bcm of overburden has been blasted at Hail Creek and each year the quantity of overburden requiring blasting is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study: evaluating the effectiveness to date of the strategy to conduct blasting operations without ammonium nitrate storage on site, and identifying whether there is a limit to which this strategy can operate after which the introduction of bulk ammonium nitrate storage facilities are necessary.

The theory of sampling has progressed slowly over the last century. The concepts of correct sampling were known to mining engineers such as D W Brunton in the 19th century. It was recognised early in the 20th century that the Poisson distribution of particles carrying the target analyte was the key to the uncertainties between samples of a given mass. However, no efforts were made until the 1980s to determine the entire sampling distribution as a function of sample mass. The variance of sampling was made clear by Gy and others, but none attempted to determine the entire sample assay density function until J H Venter in South Africa applied the method of characteristic functions to the problem.Venter applied the method to a specific case of very low analyte concentrations in samples of very fine particle size where his assumption of constant sample mass was justified. When his general methodology is applied to the more general problem, it can be shown that the assumption of constant sample mass is no longer justified and leads to some anomalous results for sampling variance. Venter’s method can be expanded to allow for a statistically variable sample mass and to take into account the size distribution of particles that carry no analyte.This paper presents the basis of Venter’s work and shows how the approach can be easily modified to yield results for the variance that are consistent, for example, with the work of Gy. Like all chains, iron ore values chains are only as strong as their weakest link, which in ore processing is often the humble chute. While mechanically the simplest element in the iron ore flow sheet, chutes are often the most problematic and regularly the major cause of unscheduled downtime. Chute designs have remained static for decades, despite the extra demands being placed on them by grade reduction, which impacts chutes in three ways viz: 1. Higher volumetric rates as infeed increases to meet production targets. 2. Higher moisture content as mining goes below water table. 3. Stickier properties as the dilution phase is often clay based. While there is no shortage of ideas and the geometry options are infinite, the fact is that chute design has not kept pace with grade decline and has remained essentially unchanged. One reason cited for this lack of innovation is the difficulty evaluating and de-risking designs. While the power of computers running Discrete Element Method (DEM) models has advanced, the models themselves still need to be ‘calibrated’ with the dynamic properties of the ore. Flow properties commonly measured for bin design are useful for static situations only and were never intended to predict dynamic behaviour as in chutes, a critical qualification lost in the mists of time. So while they always produce a colourful and reassuring animation, DEM models informed by static ore properties often result in wildly inaccurate real world predictions. Responding to this low success rate, many operators are now utilising physical modelling to help reduce risk and avoid the consequences of having an underperforming chute in their value chain. Physical testing, in a dimensionless scale-down of the proposed system (bulk material and chute geometry), addresses the shortcoming of mathematical models designs and when used in combination with DEM is the best option. In the ideal world, the focus of chute modelling should be innovative design concepts aimed at addressing future needs, however in reality the focus is nearly always on modifications to installed chutes that are underperforming even today. This situation can be traced back to design procedures which if informed at all, are based static ore properties. As an industry, we need to break this cycle and become more proactive, which means addressing flaws in the current design process. In 30 years of providing modelling support to the industry, I have looking at hundreds of underperforming chutes in the iron ore industry. This practical experience has led to a unique and unbiased perspective on chute design and their performance in the real world. The knowledge presented in this paper can not only be used to help avoid baked-in problems now, but also help guide and evaluate designs so we can deal with the challenges of our low-grade future.
