This study focuses on the recovery of valuable metals, specifically silver (Ag) and palladium (Pd), from copper-containing sludge (with copper content less than 20 per cent) generated during PCB processing and from spent petrochemical catalysts used in vapour decomposition during oil refining processes. The present results indicate that an increase in the mixing ratio of alumina-based spent catalyst leads to a decrease in the recovery rate of Ag and Pd. The recovery rates for Ag and Pd range from 84 per cent to 96 per cent and 80 per cent to 98 per cent, respectively. This trend is attributed to the increased emulsification of copper droplets containing Ag and Pd in the slag. The emulsification is caused by the decrease in the settling velocity of the copper droplets due to the increased viscosity of the slag as well as by the decrease in the slag-metal interfacial tension due to an increase in sulfur content at higher mixing ratio of spent catalyst.

As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. The paper ends with a conclusion in which the author provides a retrospective balance of the æknowledge creation projectÆ, as well as a prospective outlook for research in this field; before acknowledgements are made and references provided.

The iron (Fe) concentration in nickel slag is high, making its recovery and utilisation a hot and challenging topic. In the nickel smelting process, using CaO instead of SiO2 to adjust slag’s composition, and then directly reducing Fe from the output of molten slag is a more feasible method in practice for Fe recovery in nickel slag. The adjustment of slag’s composition in the nickel smelting process will have an impact on the distribution of impurity elements such as Pb, Zn, and As. In this paper, the slag adjustment of nickel smelting process was carried out with the oxygen-enriched topblowing system. The distribution of impurity elements in the smelting products with each composition slag was conducted by using thermodynamic software. Experimental verification was performed with rich oxygen top-blowing, and the distribution characteristics of impurity elements in the smelting products were characterised to explore the differences in mineral phases of impurity elements with each smelting conditions, elucidating the distribution patterns of Pb, Zn, and As in each phase. The results indicate that after slag adjustment, impurity elements are more easily to volatilisation and removal into the gas, reducing their total concentration in slag and matte. In the slag, the existence form of Pb, Zn is changed from silicate to ferrate, and As is changed from arsenate to low-valent arsenic oxide. It is easier to decompose the impurity-containing mineral phase and remove the impurity elements in the subsequent iron extraction process.

Sensor-based particle sorting of gold ores is the masterclass of preconcentration. The technical challenges of a grade in ppm scale makes a direct detection with currently available technology in milliseconds impossible. Consequently, the detection and classification of particles into ore and waste classes relies on detectable proxies which are the foundation for the classification. These must be reliable and repeatable across the ore bodies processed in future. A sensor-based particle ore sorting equipment must therefore be calibrated systematically by understanding the gold deportation in different lithological groups. Also, it must be in best operational state to minimise possible misplacement. The technical challenges are met by a stringent financial regime governing the business case. Many gold ore sorting projects require a stable grade of gold in the rejected waste significantly below 1gr/t. Two examples are introduced in this paper:  The pilot results and operational experience of X-ray transmission (XRT)-based particle ore sorting for pebble sorting of sulphide associated ore;  Laser-based particle ore sorting for pebble circuit of an orogenic, quartz associated gold ore. Usually, sensor-based particle sorters are installed in the crushing section of a plant. However, for large capacity plants, the number of equipment required, and the associated material handling costs result in significant capital and operating expenses for plants with 1200tph run-of-mine capacity. As a conclusion, it was decided to investigate sensor-based particle ore sorting applied to the pebble stream of two existing semi autogenous mills.

Methods of calculation of the reliability of process computers are getting more and more important. The paper presents long period observations of 21 process computers with online applications in the iron and steel industry. About 5000 failure events during 10 years have been systematically recorded and evaluated. On the basis of these long time observations it is possible to develop a probability model of the failure behaviour of process computers.This failure model is constructed with four different states of the process computer:Working phase, working phase with undetected reasons, repair phase, failure phase resulting from external influences.The model is defined by differential equations for the probability of one of these four phases. Long time observations show, that all of these four phases are closely correlated with the capa-city of a process computer, restarting without detection of failure reason, changes of programs and software, costs and time of repair. So the result of this analysis is a model of failure for process computers, which allows to predict breakdowns of process computers on the basis of external parameters.

THE plant is one of the usual type of Mond plants, and contains no new features worthy of comment. A brief description of the process, however, with a few remarks on the working of the plant, may prove of interest.Producer gas is made by passing a mixture of air and steam through incandescent carbon contained in a furnace called a producer, which, in the Mond type, is a cylindrical casing of steel plate, lined with firebrick, and fitted at the lower end with sloping fire-bars'. Coal crushed to an even size (about 2-in. gauge) is elevated to bunkers over the producers, from which it is fed into a measuring hopper on each producer.The hopper is a cast-iron cylinder fitted with a swing cover at the top and a bell valve at the bottom, worked by a lever and balance weight. When a charge of coal is run from the bunker into the hopper, the cover is closed, and the bell valve is lowered, allowing the coal contents to drop into the producer. Thus no gas can escape from, or air be admitted to, the producer during the process of charging. The hopper discharges its coal through a steel pipe-shaped container called the bell, which projects about 9 in. through the roof of the producer. The function of the bell is to spread the coal evenly over the fire, and supply coal to any portion of the fire as it settles.

In today’s underground mass mining, the orepass is an important part of the infrastructure as it connects two or more mine levels and is used for conveying or storing large amounts of material. One of the main risks related to an orepass is when operational or structural failure occurs, leading to long-term loss of functionality. Developing or rehabilitating an orepass when major failure has occurred is a time-consuming and expensive operation, and the risk of a long-term orepass loss motivates the development of alternative transportation strategies to ensure the continuation of smooth operations in large underground systems. The study presented in this paper has been done at the Loussavaara Kiirunavaara AB Malmberget mine in Sweden, where iron ore deposits are being extracted using sublevel caving. The study analyses the transportation system in one of the mine’s orebodies using discrete event simulation, with a focus on maintaining ore transportation in the event of the loss of an orepass.CITATION:Skawina, B, Greberg, J, Jonsson, K and Salama, A, 2016. Traditionally closure has been seen by the Resource sector solely as a green or an environmental issue, focused primarily on the requirement to rehabilitate the site following cessation of production activities. In addition to operational, maintenance and production aspects of processing plant design, future design teams will need to take a more holistic view and consider an increasing number of sustainability issues including safety in design and cleaner production as well as closure itself. Sustainability principles being adopted by industry such as the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Enduring Value Framework are now broadening our understanding of closure. While issues around the closure of tailings dams and associated infrastructure have been widely studied, few investigations have looked closely at the implications of closure on the design of minerals processing plants. It is likely that design teams may be able to make a significant contribution to meeting industry objectives by adopting innovative designs which, in addition to meeting production objectives, deliver sustainable and cost effective plant closure outcomes. This presentation explores the opportunity for innovative design of mineral processing plants through the assessment of alternative closure objectives. This assessment specifically looks at current industry standards and statutory requirements, as well as potential risks and opportunities associated with each objective. Alternative design strategies to meet these objectives are discussed.

This paper documents a process of data analytics and machine learning applied to coalmine roof convergence data. It follows a publication documenting the formation of the database. For each set of analyses Python scripts were utilised to extract data from an SQL database, with subsequent analyses also executed in Python, utilising open-source tools such as scikit-learn. Preliminary analyses with classic machine learning algorithms included multiple logistic regression, K-nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, kernel support vector machine, artificial neural network (ANN), naïve Bayes and multiple linear regression. Results indicated that relationships were complex and non-linear, with the artificial neural network most suitable. An ANN model was then refined through a standard process of hyperparameter optimisation and data augmentation to arrive at a final model. Due to the black box nature of the ANN further insight into how the parameters interacted was sought and found with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP values). SHAP values utilise Game Theory, where each input parameter or feature is a ‘player’ while the data set is the ‘team’. The SHAP value is the impact of each player on the target value, essentially establishing the contribution of each input parameter. The results from all analyses are delivered in the paper, together with insights, applications, strengths, and limitations of the methodology.

Consumable materials used in mines are often transported to the working areas down shallow angle decline shafts, typically at anywhere between 10¦ and 30¦ to the horizontal. The winding equipment is usually a relatively small single-drum winder and the material is transported in one or more cars, running on rails in the decline. The winding rope is attached directly to the cars, which are mechanically coupled together. For small rock hoisting declines, the cars are replaced with hoppers or skips. The winder is normally of basic design, fitted with only the minimum required safety devices and very elementary brake control. Since these winders are not ælicensedÆ and are usually located in remote areas, the standard of maintenance on the installations is often poor, leading to frequent accidents, resulting in runaways, derailments and broken ropes. These problems can be overcome easily with the application of the rope haulage principle. When large volumes of ore have to be transported to surface, belt conveyors are used on shallow angle inclines, or high-capacity friction winders are used in vertical shafts. Conveyors are limited to inclines no steeper than 14¦ and vertical shafts with large friction or drum type winders are extremely capital-intensive. Rope haulage systems can be used on decline shafts where the inclination is too steep for belt conveyors and too shallow for conventional drum winders. Rope haulage systems also offer a variety of safety, technical and cost advantages over other winding and transport systems. This paper describes the adaptation of the rope haulage principle to modern requirements and, combined with 21st century electronic technology, explains how the principle can be used as an efficient, safe and practical solution to some problems associated with the transport of materials, personnel and ore in mines. The authors describe the designs, methods of operation, safety aspects, automated control, loading and unloading facilities of modern rope haulage systems used for transporting personnel, material and ore. This paper considers a variety of systems already designed for different applications, from small material-only installations to multi-purpose and large rock-hoisting systems with payloads as much as 180 t. It also describes in more detail, a material transporting system recently commissioned in South Africa.

BHP Billiton (BHPB) was the first company to start iron ore mining in the Pilbara at Mt Goldsworthy in 1966 through Goldsworthy Mining Limited (GML - then Consolidated Goldfields Australia, Cyprus Mines and Utah). Operations later started at Newman on Mt Whaleback in 1969 with the Mt Newman Mining Joint Venture (MNM û then comprising American Metals Climax û AMAX, Colonial Sugar Refineries û CSR and BHP). In 1986 it acquired majority ownership of MNM, and at the same time the previously 100 per cent BHPB owned but undeveloped Yandi property came on board. Purchase of Jimblebar (formerly McCameyÆs Monster) occurred in 1990 and full ownership of Goldsworthy followed in 1991. With the exception of Jimblebar (100 per cent owned), all mines are now 85 per cent BHPB and the balance with Itochu and Mitsui. This evolution of the company resulted in an eclectic mix of mines/ores, each with their varied exploration and evaluation histories. Discussion of some aspects of these histories, and reflections on changes in exploration-related activities with particular reference to discussion of advances in geological understanding since the 1960s forms the basis of this paper. BHPB presently has open cut mines at four main centres û Newman, Jimblebar, Marillana Creek (Yandi) and Yarrie û and is currently developing the former GML Area C near Yandi. With the exception of NewmanÆs Mt Whaleback mine and immediate satellites, all are contract operated. Ore is carried on BHPB railroads (696 km total) for export through the companyÆs Nelson Point or Finucane Island shipping facilities at Port Hedland. Some is directed to the BHPB Boodarie Iron hot briquetted iron plant near Finucane Island. Over 73 Mt of ore was produced by BHPB in calendar 2001, and the company has now mined over 1500 Mt in Western Australia since their operations at Yampi Sound first started in 1956.

It has long been known that ventilation is a cost-effective method to lower respirable dust concentrations in all types of mining applications. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has been working on a number of different research techniques that use ventilation as a critical component to lower respirable dust levels at surface and metal/non-metal operations in the United States. This article presents five such research efforts. The first research area discusses how improving the ventilation flow patterns in an iron ore mill facility lowered respirable dust concentrations by 31 per cent throughout the primary grinding area. The second research area examines how respirable dust levels were lowered at a dimensional stone shop by using air cleaning units suspended from the ceiling. A third area discusses how improvements in ventilation at underground limestone mines lowered respirable dust concentrations. The fourth area examines how improvements in dust filtration and pressurisation systems significantly impacted the air quality in enclosed cabs of surface mining equipment. The last area presents a newly developed clothes cleaning technique. This technique uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a workerÆs clothing in an enclosed booth, which confines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. These research areas represent an array of different control technologies to lower respirable dust concentrations. Ventilation is an integral part of these control technologies.

Blast fumes are a significant health risk to underground workers, containing several dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia. To ensure safe working conditions, workers are not normally allowed to re-enter a mine until the gases are cleared. To predict if gases can be cleared efficiently, simulations can be performed to estimate the gas levels following a blast. For accurate modelling, a calibrated airflow simulation is required in addition to blast-specific parameters such as the yield rate (representing the amount of gas released per kg of explosive) and the dispersion factor (representing how quickly the gases can enter the air stream from the explosive site). Those parameters are not easily determined, as they will vary from blast to blast. Many post-blast gas recordings on mine sites were studied and the correct parameters were determined to ensure an accurate gas simulation. The variability of the results was then analysed and correlation to known parameters is suggested. Finally, recommendations on how to determine the correct parameter are presented.

There is active debate and research around the most suitable indicators to assess the sustainability of mining. The most common approach is to report a range of data for a given mine site (or less preferably, a company total), such as inputs, outputs, benefits and potential costs. The most popular protocol in use (and growing rapidly) is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, these measures are numerous and still do not allow a single over-arching indicator to be developed. Other measures, such as known mineral resources over time, do not account for critical challenges such as declining ore grades, increasing wastes and poorer quality ores or more difficult mineralogy. By adopting a thermodynamic approach to sustainability, through the concept of æexergyÆ, it is possible to incorporate into a single measure the effective quality of mineral resources. Exergy involves the assessment of the minimum energy costs involved in producing a mineral resource with a specific chemical composition and concentration from common materials in the environment. The exergy of a mineral resource is evaluated from mineralogic composition, concentration (or ore grade) and, of course, quantity, by multiplying the unit exergies with the tonnes of the resource produced (or consumed). Since exergy is a thermodynamic quantity (ie energy or joules), it is additive across different minerals, such as iron ore to gold to copper or even oil and gas or coal û making it an ideal indicator to assess mineral resource sustainability at the industry scale rather than the individual mine scale. This paper briefly outlines the theoretical basis for exergy, and then presents a range of commodity case studies showing the application of exergy to the Australian mining industry. Overall, the usefulness of exergy is clearly demonstrated for use as a broad indicator of the sustainability of mineral resources at the national or even global scale.

The approach to risk management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate delivery of a project. The NZ$1.4 B Waterview Connection project is the largest and most complex project yet undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the procurement process for an alliance contract was refined to provide compliance with the International Tunnel Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP). The principle of shared risk within an alliance incentivises a common understanding of project risks prior to finalising the alliance agreement and therefore enables superior risk management through design, construction and beyond. Risk management practices need to be instigated well in advance of commercial phases, so that commercial competition does not lead to a significant elevation of project risk. In particular the practice of gaining commercial advantage by taking on a potentially unmanageable level of risk is one of the outcomes to be avoided by the TCoP.During the procurement phase the NZTA placed high value on design and construction mitigation measures proposed in order to address ground risks, as is appropriate for a major tunnel project. In order to achieve alignment on the level of geotechnical risks an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline Report (AGBR) process was developed.This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. Reprocessing Queensland’s historical copper tailings for critical minerals is an opportunity to circularise the state’s mining industry by converting waste liabilities into assets. Mine waste valorisation enables economic rehabilitation of legacy mining sites, improves environmental outcomes, and can establish a secondary resources sector that produces a sustainable supply of critical minerals to supplement growing global demands (Australian Government, 2023). The North-West Queensland Minerals Province (NWQMP) hosts numerous copper mines with known cobalt mineralisation (Degeling, 2020). Cobalt is a critical metal essential for green energy and battery technologies, however its global supply is at risk due to geopolitical and ethical concerns (Rachidi et al, 2021). Historically mining in the NWQMP has focused on copper, leaving cobalt to theoretically accumulate in the mine waste. First-pass geometallurgical characterisation of waste repositories by the Sustainable Minerals Institute identified Capricorn Copper as a key site for further investigation into cobalt deportment and recovery potential.

In 2010, Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s operations commenced the planning and design of a sampling and analysis system for the new 50 Mt/a Cape Lambert Port B (CLB) facility. Current sampling systems at the ports consist of automated robotic, mass-based sampling protocols employed at Dampier, and semi-automated, time-based sampling systems operating at Cape Lambert Port A.The new sampling system at CLB has brought together a fully automated sampling and analysis system utilising time-based sampling, with the capacity to sample ore products of medium quality variation as defined in ISO 3082 (ISO, 2009). The CLB system is required to sample at shiploading rates from 6000 t/h to 13 440 t/h and provide full load-port analysis. The sampling approach is to proportionally extend primary increments (of varying mass relative to shiploading rate) to a standard length using variable speed aero-belt conveyor systems. This enables a fixed number of secondary cuts to be achieved for all primary increment masses and to be delivered to the automated cell. The cell is required to be capable of concurrently processing four individual shipments, each containing multiple cargoes.Achieving the target sampling precision for all export cargo sizes has culminated in the planning, design and construction of the largest automated iron ore port laboratory in the world. The CLB sampling and analysis cell was commissioned in Q3 and Q4 2013. The Louvicourt Mine is located 600 km north of Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The owners are Aur Resources Inc (30 per cent), mine operator, Novicourt Inc (45 per cent) and Teck Corporation (25 per cent). It is an underground mechanised operation with a total work of 290 employees. Since 1994, the mine production is 11 120 456 tonnes at 3.60 per cent Cu, 1.51 per cent Zn, 26.07 g/mt Ag and 0.96 g/mt Au. At a rate of 4300 tonnes per day 365 days per year. Louvicourt Mine is a copper operation since 80 per cent of our revenue is from copper. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The stope dimension is 15 m wide by 30 m high and 10 m to 80 m long for primary stopes. The secondary stopes are limited at 25 m long. Close to 100 000 metres of production drilling per year is required for 115 mm and 165 mm diameter holes. Backfilling is done with pastefill from the start of the operation in 1994. The binder ratio is 4.5 per cent in primary and two per cent in secondary stopes (80 per cent slag and 20 per cent cement). Development requirement to maintain production was 5000 m from 1996, 1997, 1998, 4200 in year 1999, 3200 m in year 2000 and an average of 2500 m in 2001 and 2002. Typical 6.0 m + 4.3 m, 4.9 m + 4.6 m and 4.5 m + 4.6 m headings. In addition more than 1500 metres of development will be excavated in/under paste backfill before 2004. A total of 60 mobile units are required among which for lateral development (three two boom electric hydraulic jumbos û AC Boomer 322, four electric hydraulic roofbolters û Maclean MEM-928 and AC Boltec PL350 and two anfo loader truck û Dux) and for production (four ITH drills û MTI, one electric hydraulic longhole drill û AC Simba H1357, eight LHD û AC-Wagner ST8-B, 1 LHD ST-1000 and two haulage 30 tons trucks û Dux. The 1 January 2002 reserves are 4.1 M tonnes grading 3.1 per cent Cu and 1.9 per cent Zn at an NSR (Net Smelter Revenue) of $US 53. The operating mining costs were at an average of $US 23 from 1996 to year 2000 and $US 25 in 2001. The operating costs ranged from a low of $US 0.41 per pound of copper in 1999 to a high of $US 0.49 per pound of copper in 1998.

The risk assessment of mining projects is directly related to the possible failure in estimating, and as estimates are made from sampling results, this activity should be done in a judicious and planned manner, to avoid surprises at the start of project operation. Pierre Gy’s (1995) sampling theory addresses the issue of sample representativeness and indicates that only the certainty that the sampling procedure was performed with quality may result in samples being recognised as representative. To validate the representativeness of samples from sampling boreholes selected for studies of mineral processing, the team of geology resource assessment of VALE has proposed a methodology based on the use of statistical analysis tools, which in addition to considering the spatial distribution of these samples in deposit, considers whether they are representative of the populations studied, allowing the geologist to make a quick analysis of sample representativeness.

The Fosterville Gold mine is located approximately 20km to the East of Bendigo in central Victoria. The gold at Fosterville occurs as solid solution within disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite. The Fosterville ore bodies contain various amounts of native carbon in the form of bituminous coal. This carbon (Non-Carbonate Carbon or NCC) has been the predominant mechanism for gold loss from the processing facility through”preg-robbing”.Processing of the Fosterville ore is achieved initially through crushing, grinding and flotation to extract the sulphides. The sulphide concentrate is oxidized using Bacterial Oxidation, before being leached in a conventional CIL circuit. A high portion of the native carbon (NCC) in the mine ore is naturally hydrophobic in nature, and subsequently reports to the flotation concentrate stream, and ultimately onto the CIL circuit. This NCC has a notable preg-robbing ability. Treatment of Black Shale ores, which have elevated NCC levels, has historically resulted in CIL recoveries as low as 35%, with around 60-80% of the gold loss from the leach circuit attributed to preg-robbing.Standard technologies for dealing with a carbonaceous leach feed have been trialed with limited success. The discovery of the significance of heat on leach recoveries, triggered extensive testwork on a range of leach feed and tails samples. Pilot plant testing demonstrated that “Heated Leaching” of the CIL tails was the best process with an average recovery increase of 7.5% being achieved. Following a successful pilot study, an engineering feasibility study was completed by Minerva Engineering, and the project economics determined. With strong recovery gains evident and a predicted project payback of 1-1.5 years, approval for the installation of the full scale plant was granted. Detailed design commenced in September 2008 with installation commencing in January 2009. The circuit was successfully commissioned in April 2009.Following commissioning, the Heated Leach circuit has achieved recovery gains of 4-14%, and has proven itself to be a significant contributor to the overall plant performance.
