This paper introduces a new, safer bulk emulsion loading system for underground mining operations. The features and benefits of the equipment, along with the use of Dyno Nobel Inc patented gassed emulsion technology, is summarised in the application of a stope blast with very difficult and complex ground conditions. The paper describes methods used to optimise the amount of energy required to break the ore while protecting the integrity of the surrounding backfilled pillar.

The Dumont deposit is a large (1179 Mt reserve), low-grade (0.27 per cent nickel) nickel sulfide project located in the Abitibi region 25 km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation (RNC) acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the deposit through to feasibility. The disseminated nickel sulfide and alloy mineralisation is hosted within the serpentinised dunite subzone of the Dumont Sill; a differentiated, pervasively serpentinised, ultramafic sill of komatiitic affinity. Pentlandite ((Ni,Fe)9S8), heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and awaruite (Ni2.5Fe) are the dominant nickel-bearing metallic phases and can be recovered by conventional methods (flotation, magnetic separation). Non-recoverable nickel is also present within serpentine and olivine of the silicate matrix.A detailed mineralogical program including 1420 QEMSCAN« samples and 4400 electron microprobe points was undertaken to increase the understanding of the nickel deportment in the various recoverable and non-recoverable phases in a spatial context across the deposit. A total of 105 metallurgical tests have been performed under a standard procedure which have linked the mineralogy to metallurgical performance. This has allowed the creation and modelling of geometallurgical domains on a block-by-block basis to understand the recovery variation and metallurgical performance throughout the deposit. Understanding the spatial variability of Ni deportment in recoverable and non-recoverable phases through mineralogy is the key to understanding metallurgical performance, thus unlocking the value of the Dumont deposit and other large tonnage low-grade ultramafic nickel deposits.CITATION:Sciortino, M, Muinonen, J, Korczak, J and St-Jean, A, 2013. After decades of turmoil, Rwanda launched its Vision 2020 in 2000 aimed at reconstructing government and addressing poverty. Implementation focused on the agricultural sector, infrastructure and education. Later economic development and poverty reduction strategies recognised that expansion of tantalum, tin and tungsten mining could potentially diversify Rwanda’s economy and improve the balance of trade. In 2005, comprehensive environmental legislation requiring environmental impact assessment for all new mines was introduced. Since 2006, government-operated mines have been privatised and illegal artisanal miners encouraged to form cooperatives. The government passed a new Mining and Quarry Exploitation Law in 2008 and approved a new Mining Policy in 2010. This policy was influenced by the Africa Mining Vision (AMV), which the African Union approved in 2009 to ensure African countries obtain reasonable benefits from exploitation of their mineral wealth. The Rwandan mining industry has grown significantly over the last five years and the second economic development and poverty reduction strategy, released in September 2013 forecasts a further three-fold increase in production in the next five years. The strategy prioritises the mining industry and proposes new legislation, better information, greater transparency, encouragement to investment and use of best environmental and technical practices. It also proposes that Rwanda develop a ‘green’ mining sector featuring a ‘model’ mine that is fully funded through green investment and incorporates renewable energy systems, water treatment systems, forestry schemes and local training. Many international development partners have contributed to the current legislative framework and are monitoring environmental and social performance of mining in Rwanda. Local communities have generally benefited from mining and the new mines show improved environmental performance. The major challenges are dealing with the legacy of past haphazard mining practices and establishing linkages between the mines and local industries to create broader economic development.CITATION:Wilson, I H, 2014. Woodcutters is a polymetallic vein-style deposit hosted by sediments of the Palacoproterozoic Whites Formation which forms part of the sedimentary sequence in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. Past production and identified resources total over eight million tonnes at 5.5 per cent lead, 12.1 per cent zinc and 110 gA silver. The local geology is influenced by Archaean basement highs; the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes. Unconformably overlying basement are interbedded clastic and crystalline carbonate units (Batchelor Group) representing cyclic changes in the depositional environment. These exhibit onlapping features with the underlying rocks. Sediments of the overlying Frances Creek Group suggest a quiet period during subsidence and subsequent increase in water depth (the carbonaceous dolomitic shales and the interbedded dololutites of the Whites Formation) followed by proximal uplift resulting in the inundation of turbiditic flows (Acacia Gap Quartzite). All of the Palaeoproterozoic rocks show evidence of being affected by penecontemporaneous, basement circling faults with steep dips. The stress regime during the deposition of the Frances Creek Group was characterised by alternating episodes of thrusting and transpression. Periods of relaxation also occurred. The compression resulted in major NS strike-slip (transpressional) faulting, en-echelon NNE trending folds and NW-SE tensional cross faults. Thrusting produced N-S striking, steep dipping reverse faults and a possible decollement immediately above the Batchelor Group. Relaxation is evidenced by the intrusion of lamprophyre dykes and dolerite sills (Zamu Dolerite). Mineralisation at Woodcutters occurred in faults within the Whites Formation, probably synchronous with deformation and the deposition of the upper parts of the Frances Creek Group. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred as the rocks were further buried. Several massive sulphide bodies occur at Woodcutters. A number of features influence the location and shape of these bodies. They are: ò the N-S transpressional faults and in particular associated dilation zones; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the axial plane of the NNE trending Woodcutters Anticline; ò intersection of the N-S transpressional faults with the NW-SE cross-faults; ò intersection of dololutite rich units with the NS transpressional faults where local replacement takes place; ò thickening of the lithological units in the vicinity of the anticlinal axis; and ò the anticline doubly plunging to both the north and south. The mineralisation exhibits vein-like features as well as epigenetic textures. Its boundaries are sharp, its thickness varies rapidly down dip and along strike, and no alteration halo exists though stringer veins of quartz-carbonate-pyrite ¦ sphalerite/galena occur in close proximity. A number of sulphide mineral assemblages have been recognised, each separated by periods of deformation and partially replacing the earlier assemblages. Vertically continuous zonation patterns highlight the presence of rich galena-sphalerite-silver in zones of maximum dilation and pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold concentrated at the along strike peripheries. The genetic model proposed has the mineralisation occurring whilst the transpressional regime was active. It was deposited from the same fluid that elsewhere in the Geosyncline formed the stratiform deposits higher in the sedimentary pile. Hydrocarbons sourced from the organic-rich Whites

Coal is of tremendous importance for the Czechoslovak econ- omy. The current annual primary energy demand being about 109 million tons of standard fuel (1 ton of standard fuel - 7,000 coal = 29,308 GJ), coal satisfies almost two thirds of our fuel consumption. If compared with the distribution of resources in the world's fuel and energy pattern, the situation in Czechos- lovakia is significantly different, as shown in Fig. I. One of the causes behind the difference is that the Czechoslo- vak oil and natural gas reserves and, hence, their production are insignificant, so that it is necessary to import them. Brown coal will continue to play an important role as a prin- cipal domestic source of primary energy even in the future. While the share of nuclear power is increasing, brown coal represents strategic reserves in the fuel and energy balance.

India, the second-largest steel manufacturer globally, achieved crude steel production of around 126 million tonnes (Mt) in the last financial year of April 2022 to March 2023 (FY23), against an installed capacity of 162 Mt. In its National Steel Policy, 2017, India has undertaken targets to take the crude steel production capacity to 300 Mt by 2030–2031 and production and demand to around 255 Mtpa, also by this deadline. The blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BoF):electric arc furnace-induction furnace (EAF-IF) ratio in 2022 was at 44:56.

In this paper current net present value (NPV) based mine valuation techniques that take into account market and private risk are discussed and analysed. Potential pitfalls that arise from the application of a portfolio, market or commodity based risk metric to a mining project are identified. An alternative non-simulative framework for quantifying and factoring market and private risk in NPV calculations is proposed and then applied to a hypothetical case study in an attempt to overcome identified pitfalls. Mathematical proof that a static discounted cash flow (DCF) calculation can underestimate or overestimate mine NPV is presented, the conditions for each are outlined and the degree of underestimation defined.CITATION:Dube, T Y, 2012. Pyro-metallurgy is still the main process for lead production and a lot of lead direct smelting processes have been developed in recent years. All the processes will experience two steps in common. The first is the oxidisation of PbS to PbO and then reduction from PbO to Pb, furthermore, from ZnO to Zn. So, the composition of melts, especially the slag composition at reduction step change continuously. Up to now, there are few systematic results on the slag physical-chemical properties with its composition change. In this work, the typical lead direct smelting processes were analysed from theoretical and practical standpoints. The full-period slag composition and slag melting point change were compared. Especially, to the PbO and ZnO reduction steps, based on the full-period slag composition change, the slag properties were predicted. Based on dust composition and test results, the mechanism of Pb compound evaporation and its effect on practice and measurement of high PbO bearing slag physical-chemical property is discussed. It is suggested that to restrain the evaporation in practice and to obtain more accurate measurement results of physicochemical properties of smelting slag are the key problem not only to set high efficiency, energy saving process, but also to environmental pollution control.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. During the last 20 years the CSIRO Division of Manufacturing Technology, through its research and development program, has made a substantial contribution towards understanding the pressure die casting process. Much of this work focused on the hot chamber die casting of zinc, where the importance of achieving optimum flow of metal into the die cavity, combined with the correct thermal balance of the tool, is critical to the production of high quality castings. Having developed a fuller understanding of the heat and fluid flow occurring in the pressure die casting process, CSIRO sought to make this information available to the industry in a form where it could be readily used by die casting engineers. This led to the development of DMT-CASTFLOW and DMT-CASTHERM, two unique, PC-based, die design software packages. DMT-CASTFLOW provides facilities for designing running and gating systems while DMT-CASTHERM enables the die designer to optimise the cooling and/or heating requirements of the die. These two packages are now being sold internationally. This paper will describe some of the major features and benefits that can be derived by using DMT-CASTFLOW and DMT-CASTHERM panicularly in the design of zinc pressure die casting dies.

Water sprays on mining machines are generally put there to reduce dust; however, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has shown that considerable airflows may also be generated by these sprays. This recognition of water spray-gen- erated air movement led to the "Spray-Fan" - a continuous miner auxiliary ventilation system which was shown to reduce methane peaks by a factor of 15. Recent successes and failures of the Spray Fan are reviewed. More recently, the same principles were used in the design of the "Shearer- Clearer" for reducing dust at longwall shearer operators. The original design was successful; however, a new design is now available which is more practical to install and does a much better job of holding the dust against the face downwind of the shearer. The latest research objective is to eliminate the negative impact of spray- generated air turbulence on continuous miner dust control. Most coal faces in the USA are ventilated in the exhaust mode using "line curtain", and the forward airflow on the side of the heading opposite the curtain is inevitably weak. Air turbulence generated by sprays which are incorrectly located and/or operated at excessive pressures can cause roll back - in which the dust cloud at the face is forced unwind against the ventilation and spreads over the miner cnerator. The general approach to reducing "roll back." is reviewed and art anti-roll back water spray system is presented.

Legislation up to the early 1950s prevented the mechanical extraction of pillars. The mines operating at that time had formed extensive areas of pillars. When permission for the mechanical extraction was gazetted, conventional equipment was employed for pillar extraction and generally using hand mining systems. The mid-fifty's saw the of continuous miners. These machines eliminated the disadvantages of conventional equipment and the necessity for multiple working places. Some new layouts for panels emerged; however, actual extraction methods of pillars still followed closely that of hand mining. During the early sixty's the extraction of standing or new formed pillars was undertaken by the "open-end lift" or a "split and lift" method.

The Hodgkinson goldfield contains over 50 separate lodes which have produced 9.7 tonnes of gold from ore averaging 37 g/t. The gold-quartz.lodes are spatially separate from tin and base metal mineralisation, associated with Permo-Carboniferous granitoids in the province. Host rocks consist of sub-greenschist metamorphic grade shale, conglomerate, sandstone, spilite, chert and melange. Oreshoots average 100 x 30 x I m in Size and are contained in cross-cutting quartz. filled with steep-dipping shear zones. Mineralisation in the quartz. consists of gold with minor arsenopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite with rare calcite. Scheelite and stibnite are aSSOCIated locally but are not necessary proximal or coeval. Alteration is restricted to centimetre-scale phyllic selvedges adjacent to the veins and veinlets.Most of the lodes and vems occur within six main 1.5 x 0.25 km mineralised areas whIch may indIcate separate areas of fluid flow and precipitation. Ore controls differ m melange- and sandstone-hosted lodes but several features are common to all the oreshOOlS. Most of the lodes occur within zones of duauon that are caused by splaymg, refraction through carbonaceous shale-sandstone contacts, or by rolls and changes in strike and dip.Lithologic contacts may act as areas of permeability and chemistry contrast which focus fluid and precipitation. Tensional veins are common between parallel shear zones and curved spur veins occur both in the hangingwall and footwall of the main fissure. Intersections and contacts may have enhanced local fluid flow in many of the areas.

The San Vicente stratabound zinc-lead rhythmite deposit, Peru, is hosted in carbonates of the Late Triassic - Early Jurassic Pucara Group. These strata were deposited in a large, shallow water, carbonate platform which extended nearly continuously for 150 kilometers (north-south) in the eastern part of the Pucara basin.The distinctive sulfide-bearing rhythmites occur in three dolomite units which, from bottom to top, include the San Judas horizon with one sulfide-bearing manto; the San Vicente horizon with seven sulfide-bearing mantos including the main ore horizon; and the Alfonso horizon with three sulfide-bearing mantos. The dark gray sulfide-bearing dolostone layers range in thickness from a few millimeters to a few centimeters and contain variable amounts of carbonaceous material, pyrite, quartz, fine-grained sphalerite and galena. They are bordered on each side by selvages of yellow to red-brown coarse-grained sphalerite containing minor amounts of galena. Coarsely crystalline white or gray sparry dolomite is found between the coarse-grained sphalerite layers. Although commonly stratiform and uniform in thickness, the dark layers curve, "pinch out," coalesce, and form "islands" and "peninsulas."Mineral replacement textures, the paragenetic sequence, and presence of sparry dolomite, bitumen, intraformational breccias and isotope data support a hydrothermal replacement origin by metal-bearing solutions that deposited the ore and related minerals in space previously occupied by dolomite and evaporite minerals. The alignment of the Zn -Pb deposits, and at San Vicente the orientation of the mantos, the spatially and temporally associated igneous sills and the tourmaline-bearing sandstone support hydrothermal mineralization driven by a magmatic heat source in a tensional regime.

In 1997, the Australian coal industry through Standards Australia committee MN-001 Coal and Coke recognised the need to produce a Standard giving some instruction on how to inspect and audit mechanical sampling systems. A Guide was developed by sampling subcommittee MN-001-04 and in 1999 the Standard was released as AS4264.5 æGuide to the Inspection of mechanical sampling systemsÆ Coal and Coke. Since that time the author has assisted with other committees in developing the Guide for other commodities such as concentrates and a generic standard for particulate materials. (AS4433.6 released 2000). The Coal and Coke guide is also currently a work item for ISO Standards. This paper is focused primarily on auditing and inspection procedures for coal mechanical sampling systems. It highlights the need for at least a three level inspection protocol where the operators manning the system maintain operational checks, the operators are regularly supervised by the company managing the system and once per year an independent auditor inspects the whole system to ensure compliance with design and standards. It does not cover short- and long-term maintenance of individual systems. With companies already certified to the ISO9000 series, this guide forms the framework to bring the operation and inspection of their mechanical sampling systems into line with these principles.

The objective of this paper was to determine if recent advances in numerical electromagnetic wave propagation modelling techniques could be used to study the propagation of GPS signals over arbitrary terrain. Specifically the effects of diffraction and multipath were to be modelled accurately for propagation over arbitrary terrain surfaces defined by a digital terrain model. Ideally the model was to be in three dimensions and cover an area of a few square kilometres with a simulation height of a few hundred metres. Simulations were to run on current technology PC's with run times less than a few hours. A relatively new technique that involves a numerical solution to the Parabolic Equations can be used to solve for two-dimensional propagation over any type of terrain. The PE provides a direct solution of Maxwell's wave equations by approximating the Helmholtz scalar wave equation. This technique does not rely on the study of individual ray paths as used in the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). It was decided to develop a two dimensional Parabolic Equation code, using the Fourier Split/Step method that allowed propagation over arbitrary terrain (; ; ). The model boundary conditions assumed that the satellite transmission was a plane wave, and that the lower boundary was a perfect reflector. Propagation simulations from the model accurately provide the amplitude and phase of the propagated plane wave at all points within the model domain. The PE model was used to study the effects of diffraction and multipath caused by various types of terrain commonly found in an open cut mining environment. The study of diffraction errors was relatively simple, because we are simply concerned with amplitude of the signal as it diffracts about an obstacle. If the amplitude is above the level receivable by a GPS receiver then the diffraction error can be obtained from the geometry of the terrain obstacle. The study of multipath is more complex, as the computed phase from the PE model is ambiguous and the presence of multipath can only be inferred. Thus the absolute magnitude of the nmltipath error is not currently determinable, though the results of some new work is shown here. This paper shows that diffraction effects can cause significant errors in range. It also shows the effects that multipath has on the received amplitude of the signal and the received phase of the signal. A discussion is made of further work that is presently underway that will allow the direct determination of the multipath error by comparing the ambiguous phase with a reference phase.

In April 1994 the Victorian Premier announced new State initiatives, collectively termed the Victorian Initiative for Minerals and Petroleum (VIMP), for exploration totalling $16.5 m over three years. The program, initially centred on the northwest of Victoria, the Eastern Highlands and the Otway Basin, is due for completion in June 1997 and has been designed to attract explorers to highly prospective but currently under-explored parts of the State. Major components of the program include acquisition of geophysical data (including airborne magnetics and radiometrics, gravity and seismic data), stratigraphic drilling, geological mapping and mineral resource data compilation. At the completion of the current program, 70 per cent of the State will have been covered by airborne magnetic and radiometric coverage at 400 m line spacing or better (Figure I) while 20 per cent of the State will have been covered by new geological mapping. The completion of database compilations for geochemistry, mine data and exploration licence summaries during the VIMP program is shown in Figure 2. The new airborne geophysical surveys have been flown partly under the VIMP program and partly by AGSO under the National Geoscience Mapping Accord (NGMA). Data from these surveys have been interpreted and incorporated into the geological mapping in order to enhance the quality of map products, especially in areas of Cainozoic cover. The first series 1:250 000 scale geological map coverage of Victoria was completed by the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) in 1977, and was based on compilation of historical geological mapping with minor field checking in most cases. The first metric 1:50 000 scale geology maps were also commenced in the 1970s, but were discontinued in the 1980s in favour of 1:100 000 scale map production. Driven by customer survey findings and with the benefit of detailed airborne geophysical data in the 1990s, the GSV reverted to 1:50 000 scale map production in 1995, with 1:10 000 scale maps made in areas of significant gold production. Geological reports still cover standard 1:100 000 scale map areas, but are now accompanied by four 1:50 000 scale maps. These new series 1:50 000 scale geological maps have been supported by comprehensive mine data and exploration licence summary databases in addition to the new geophysics, and benefit from the advances made in structural geological interpretation over the last decade. The new phase of geological mapping in Victoria, commenced under the NGMA in 1990 and accelerated under VIMP in 1994, has been focused in the central Victorian goldfields and eastern Highlands areas of the State (Figure 1). Results to-date have led to a number of major advances in the understanding of the eeoloeical evolution of Victoria.

The distribution of platinum-group elements (pGEs) has been investigated in matte and slag samples from Waterval Smelter (Rustenburg Platinum Mines). The study showed that a strong preference of PGEs for alloy phases in matte represents a concentration mechanism that commenced in the furnace but can be considered a continuum from natural processes. Metal losses to fayalite (converter) slag occur by matte entrainment due to the mechanical capture of liquid sulphide droplets from the matte layer, and the exsolution of dissolved metal sulphide resulting from changes in the oxidation state of the slag. The latter is comparable to immiscible sulphide in basic magmas. However, the observed distribution of PGEs shows enrichment in metal phases of the matte. A mechanism is proposed whereby naked PGEs in silicate melts coalesce to form clusters which are stabilised by surface attachment of sulphur atoms. This envelope acts to 'draw the cluster into sulphide melts. Small particle melting effects permit PGE clusters to remain as liquids at magmatic and smelter temperatures.

Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. One of the greatest practical difficulties of measuring airblast occurs when a significant wind is blowing onto the microphone. Small windscreens are usually used to mitigate the wind noise on the microphone, but in some wind conditions, sound pressure levels (SPL) of over 120 decibel (linear) are frequently recorded. There are no specific procedures to mitigate the effect of wind noise when measuring airblast in any of the standards or guidelines pertaining to the measurement of airblast from blasting operations, other than the requirement to use an effective windscreen. A search for relevant literature was undertaken and measurements were taken over a period of six months at a test site using alternative microphone measurement methods. Previous researchers’ experiments with windscreens in silenced wind tunnels showed that wind noise can be reduced through the use of large diameter windscreens, and that at low frequencies, the windscreen size and the material type makes no difference to measured SPL values. Other researchers found that wind turbulence caused significant SPL measurement problems. A comparison with field data failed to explain the extremely high SPL recorded by the field microphones at wind velocities much lower than those used in wind tunnel testing. It has been concluded that turbulent airflow over and behind the microphone is a significant contributor to extraneous noise in airblast measurements in windy conditions. This turbulence can be generated by objects upwind of the microphone or by the microphone itself if the windscreen is ineffective. Reducing the wind speed over the microphone by placing it on the ground is the approach required by the international standard for the measurement of noise from wind turbine generators (IEC 61400–11). This paper presents data that illustrates the extent of the problem, reports on the trial of three different microphone mounting locations for measuring airblast from blasting and concludes that in windy conditions, microphones placed on the ground substantially avoid wind problems and do not reduce the measured SPL of the airblast.CITATION:Henley, K, 2015.
