GOLD, the most important and highly coveted valuable metal, is being sought and exploited in almost all the geological environ- ments by the developed, developing and underdeveloped coun- tries of the world. Brazil, one of the five largest countries of the world, has similar geological and lithological environments as of Africa, Australia and Canada and also produces this noble metal. With the recent gold rush in Serra Pelada Hill in Para State of Brazil and the consequent migration of a large number of enter- prises to the Amazon region in search of geological conditions similar to that of Serra Pelada, the status of Brazil in gold produc- tion has been considerably elevated to be among the first five of the world. The principal geological environments or the lithologies where gold can be explored are the greenstone belts, banded iron for- mations, quartz lodes and placers; and the tectonic controls like shear zones in these horizons, or the tectonic relics or the annular- structures that limit the quartz vein systems in felsic as well as volcanogenic systems and epithermal models. An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

Although the bromo-cyanide or Diehl process for the extraction of gold from its ores is used on several of the Kalgoorlie mines, very little information has been published on the original process, and no details are available from the various mines now using it. The following description of the process as carried on at the Hannan's Star plant, where several modifications were introduced by the author, will therefore be of interest to mining men, and it is hoped that some discussion on this paper will provide further useful information to the mining community.The process was first installed on the Hannan's Star mine, where a full working plant was erected by the London-Hamburg Co. In their contract they guaranteed a 91 per cent. extraction on a sulphide ore of 15 dwt value. This was considered a very high extraction at the time, and the plant successfully carried out its work.The new features in the process were the finer grinding of the ore, for which purpose the tube mill was introduced, and the addition of a solution of bromo-cyanide to the vats under ordinary cyanide treatment, whereby a higher extraction was obtained in a shorter time. The main difficulty in the process was the easy manufacture of the bromo-cyanide solution, but this was eventually overcome. The mixed salts now supplied by the LondonHamburg Co. are in every way satisfactory, and are supplied at such a price that the process compares favourably with any other from a cost point of view.

Mineral processing is characterised by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high-grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customer’s requirement for product purity and consistent quality increases.Over recent years beneficiation techniques for iron ore fines have become more important in order to achieve a maximised utilisation of ore resources and to produce competitive products according to international standards.Many high capacity iron ore beneficiation plants that target the production of fines focus on gravity separation processes using fluidised bed classifiers and spirals or wet high intensity magnetic separators as an alternative. This paper demonstrates the suitability of utilising the allflux® two-stage fluidised bed classifiers to treat iron ore particles up to 2 mm in size as well as showing how the high capacity gaustec® wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) technology offers several advantages compared to other WHIMS technology.The combination of the allflux® and gaustec® technologies offer the following benefits:The two-stage fluidised bed classification extracts a significant amount of concentrate from the feed. This in turn reduces the feed capacity required for the gaustec® WHIMS located downstream.The second classification stage produces a -0.5 + 0.1 mm product and a -0.1 mm product. The efficiency of the magnetic separation on these classifi ed products is high due to optimised settings for each size fraction.

It's my privilege to welcome you here this afternoon on behalf of the Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This is a most important gathering. You, the delegates, represent what is probably the most influential cross-section of the mining investment community and the oil and gas investment community to meet as a group during the last decade. We are meeting today and tomorrow to review two related issues that will have far reaching implications for the effective use of capital by the natural resources sector in the 1990's. The views which will emerge over the two days will almost certainly 'influence the availability of new capital to the companies in the natural resources sector for the decade ahead. The two principal themes of Minval '89 are, first, the valuation of mining and oil and gas assets and securities, and second, disclosure and reporting requirements in the capital markets which relate specifically to natural resources companies. This conference is taking place at a time when further consolidation and rationalisation appears likely within the mining industry. Although the base metals and other sectors of the industry are enjoying profitability not seen since the early 1980's there is caution about committing to new capacity which could bring about a return to the low prices and excess supply which prevailed during much of the last ten years. These conditions have led to increased takeover activity within the mining industry overseas, and similar trends are as evident here in Australia as they are elsewhere. Recognition of value is therefore likely to become more important than ever before in preserving shareholder wealth, for creating new wealth and for preserving the financial health of the resources industry in the future. Valuation therefore is the first theme of the conference.

Welcome to the morning of the second day of Minval '89. There are some three hundred and fifty of us here today. That represents certainly the most influential gathering of the mining and investment community in Sydney for a very long time, and on behalf of the Institute I bid you all a very great welcome. Due to the pilots' strike some of you have arrived by very unusual methods and others have travelled long distances. So for those of you that have made a special effort, thank you very much. Inevitably some people have not been able to get to Sydney and this has led to some minor programme changes. I'd like to thank our sponsors. If a straight line should be drawn on the map (Fig 1) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to thewest, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the outh Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about it central portion, the zone may aptly be termed 'The Great Reefton Gold Belt.'The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. Running along the eastern side of the gold belt are the Brunner and Victoria Ranges, which are chiefly composed of crystalline schists and metamorphic granite of probably Cambrian or Silurian age; between these and the gold-bearing series there are interposed at one or two places some beds of slates, limestones, and cherts of Devonian age, characterized by the brachyopods Spirifer...

Geological data processing by machine enables'an increased rate of coverage, better supervision and control of field programmes, increased effectiveness of field operators, and vastly improved access to old and new field data. Even a system of restricted felxibility enables a mapping programme to be organ- ized and conducted independent of personnel changes, whilst elimination of much compilation time increases the rate of cover- age such that it relates to mode of transport and geological complexity rather than to personality factors. A machine is useful only if applied to tasks suited to its capabilities, and must be aimed at those types of mapping in which a limited number of attributes adequately define the problem, and the data is of a form suited to coding and is normally collected in sufficient abundance to make compilation wearisome. Machine systems are therefore unsuited to most types of lithological mapping and to most types of exploration in new areas, but have proved useful in many branched of cartographic geophysics (e.g. gravity and magnetics), and in cartographic Geochemistry.

The JORC Code contains a mandatory classification system for Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates for public reporting. The classification is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process, or is derived from an estimated level of confidence in the outcome. However, the statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource or reserve which must take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation.In addition to the traditional deterministic interpretation and estimations adopted by geologists, semi-quantitative techniques are now available to improve the estimation of confidence while continuing to involve the Competent PersonÆs experience in the process. Methods for quantifying confidence in mineral resource estimates for advanced projects and operating mines have also been developed.Classification is undertaken primarily as a communication tool between the estimators and the other stakeholders in the process. A brief examination of the stakeholdersÆ requirements is included.

Burra was the largest metalliferous mine in Aus- tralia between 1845 and 1860 and employed as many as 1000 men and boys. The workforce was predominantly Cornish, Burra being the first con- centration of Cornish folk in Australia. The sur- face and underground mining operations were typically Cornish and virtually all positions of responsibility were held by Cornishmen. Beam pumping and winding engines were imported from Cornwall and housed in traditional Cornish engi- nehouses. Burra had the first significant number of beam engines in Australia: six were installed between 1849 and 1861. These engines, ranging in size from 20 inches to 80 inches in diameter, were used for pumping, hauling, and driving Cornish roll crush- ers and dressing machinery. Derelict enginehouses of the great beam engines are a striking reminder of former mining activity in Cornwall and South Australia. In South Aus- tralia about 35 enginehouses were erected between 1848 and 1887, of which eight still remain, three of them at Burra (Figure 1). These remain as a tangible link with the Industrial Revolution.

In order to achieve optimum results for money spent in construction of new projects there is a need for mining developers to pay greater attention to cost control. Control is achieved by establishing a frame of reference, a method of checking and a means of remedial action. The frame of reference is a well coded set of budget estimates which graduate into definitive estimates as design is completed, backed up by drawings, specifications and bills of quantities. The method of checking is provided by cost engineering and quantity surveying input, at both feasibility study and design and documentation stages. Remedial action follows if the checking process reveals a need. In large complex projects where construction completion time is often of prime importance, control of costs can sometimes be relegated to second place. To avoid this it may be necessary to include specialists in cost control in project management teams. Quantity surveyors are trained specifically in construction economics and can provide develop- ers and project engineers with valuable support at all stages of construction.

Blasting effectiveness must be gauged by total production costs. ANFO charges made up in polythene "sausages" are not as profitable as is indicated by the price of ANFO. All-slurry charges are warranted only where blastholes cannot be dewatered effectively, or where drilling costs are very high. An increase in blasthole diameter leads to coarser fragmentation. This effect is most pronounced in tough and massive or blocky strata, or in ground which consists of unfissured boulders in a softer matrix. When ANFO and some slurry-type charges of small diameter are used in plastic-acting ground, charges may fail to detonate through precompression by charges fired on an earlier delay. The optimum blasthole length is rarely less than four times the burden distance. For best results, blastholes should be inclined to the vertical and parallel to the face. Nominal burdens and spacings are often altered radically by the initiation sequence. For best fragmentation, all blastholes must have good effective faces, and should be effectively stagg- ered with an actual spacing:burden ratio in the approximate range 2.0-5.0.

The effects of changes in sintering bed height, coke fuel, suction and basicity on sinter productivity, physical strength and mineralogy were determined. It was found that, for a given iron ore, there is a narrow -coke range which maximises sinter strength, irrespective of bed height (in the range 300 to 500 mm) or basicity (in the range 1.2 to 2.2). Increases in bed height, at a constant coke level, improved the physical strength of the sinter. Productivity increases were obtained by increasing the sintering suction but, at coke levels other than the optimum, these *ere somewhat offset by the decrease in sinter physical strength. At basicities higher than 1.2 (i.e. 1.6, 1.8 and 2.2) there was a narrowing of'the size range of product sinter, with a decrease in the percentage of top size material, and a decrease in the amount of fines produced. Changes in coke, bed height and basicity exert major effects on sinter mineralogy, while the Nagoya index was mainly influenced by cote and bed height Changes.

Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. Au and 2 oz. Ag per ton.

Due to their ability to produce high-resolution images of the subsurface to great depths, seismic surveys provide critical inputs to almost all oil and gas exploration projects. However, with some notable exceptions, seismic surveys have rarely been used in mineral exploration. In the past, this was due to both technical and financial reasons. Significant developments on both fronts mean that seismic surveys can now offer substantial benefits to mineral exploration and mining, and surveys conducted for exploration can provide important data sets for mine planning over the life of a mining project.We present case history data that show that seismic surveys can greatly assist with mapping the 3D distribution of lithologies and alteration and, in favourable circumstances, directly detect mineralisation in and around mineral systems. As a result of their high spatial sampling density, seismic surveys are also highly effective at mapping structures that can remain undetected or poorly characterised by drilling alone. These structures may host or provide important vectors to mineralisation. They can also be particularly important when planning shafts, raise bores, declines, stopes and open pit walls. A further benefit of seismic surveys is that they can remotely provide information on geotechnical rock parameters that are used for rippability, slope stability, blasting and ground support.CITATION:Turner, G, Urosevic, M, Pridmore, D and Dwyer, J, 2015. Iluka Resources Ltd developed the Jacinth-Ambrosia Mine (Jacinth) in the Eucla Basin during 2009 and 2010. In this arid climate the operation relies on hyper-saline groundwater from a palaeochannel for process and potable water supplies. The water is hyper-saline, acidic and mildly reducing, with high ferrous iron concentrations. Ferrolysis commences on exposure of water to oxygen, resulting in increased acidity and the conversion of dissolved ferrous iron to insoluble ferrihydrite. The unstable groundwater forces a careful balance between interventions relating to maintaining pipeline efficiency, corrosion protection and processing aspects. Providing an oxidising environment at the head of the pipeline will result in the precipitation of akaganenite and goethite in the pipeline, which over time reduces pipeline efficiency. However, sending too much ferrous iron forward may reduce processing performance.The processing plant experiences changes in water chemistry in response to the variability of iron concentrations and pH within the pipeline, and the spatial and chemical variability of ore. As the main orebody at Jacinth contains little buffering capacity a source of carbonate in the overburden is carefully used to allow the cost-effective control of process water pH.This paper highlights the importance of understanding the chemistry of saline make-up water, ore, and overburden when designing water treatment facilities and heavy mineral processing facilities.

The Rio Tinto Iron Ore group currently estimates grade attributes for mineral resources using ordinary kriging (OK). OK produces a smoothed globally unbiased estimate, but does not capture local variability, which can have significant impact on mine planning and scheduling. The dimensions and the multivariate nature of iron ore deposits make point simulations of whole deposits impractical. With a direct block simulation method the size and speed limitations of point simulations can potentially be overcome, resulting in a viable method for capturing local variability and for providing risk measures into the mine plan and schedules. Some iron ore deposits are highly folded (post mineralisation) and require preprocessing using an unfolding algorithm to properly define the continuity parameters and directions of anisotropy before simulation can proceed. Block co-simulation proceeds in unfolded space and since mine planning require a block-model with regular block-sizes; a regular block-model is unfolded first. This paper discusses a block co-simulation approach that can be used to simulate the irregular blocks resulting from the unfolding process. A section of an iron ore deposit is used for testing the block co-simulation algorithm and the simulation results are compared against the Isatis direct block simulation method. Available blasthole data is also used to validate the behaviour of the block co-simulation algorithm.

Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Exxaro Sands Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa (see Figure 1). The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. Inflated commodity prices and increasing operating costs demands greater attention to the management of process performance and the company wide coordination of resources. Consequently, the task of deploying operational/technical skills and budgets into the most appropriate parts of the business assumes great importance in order to increase productivity from its capital assets. The mineral sands industry is under the same sort of economic scrutiny that all other industries find themselves, and as such, Exxaro – Namakwa Sands has taken the strategic initiative to improve overall resource utilisation within the processing steps and to measure the costs associated with obtaining this value.This paper provides details of the successful implementation of a Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) at Namakwa Sands to recover primary and secondary zircon products from the wet gravity (quartz) rejects generated and stockpiled at the Mineral Separation plant (MSP).

Nuclear techniques have been used to determine the solids weight fraction (W) and ash content of (fine) coal in slurries independent of voidage variations. The method is based on the correlation between W and the hydrogen concentration Hsl (wt/wt) of the slurry. Hsl is determined by combining measurements of neutron moderation and ?-ray transmission. Both Wand ash content are determined by combining the above measurements with the ash-sensitive measurement of X-ray backscatter compensated by a measurement of iron K X-ray intensity.The nuclear analysis system, called the SIRO coal slurry gauge, has been proved in a six-week plant trial at the BHP Steelworks washery at Newcastle, NSW. Several probes, each containing a radioisotope source and scintillation detector, were immersed directly into the coal slurry in the feed box upstream from the bank of flotation cells. For 140 samples W, ash and voidage varied in the ranges of 0 to 13 wt percent, 26 to 41 wt per cent and 0 to 4 vol. per cent, respectively. The r.m.s. difference in solids weight fraction, determined by probe measurements and conventional assay, was 0·52 wt per cent. Ash was determined with an r.m.s. difference of 2·0 wt percent in the coal. Better sampling techniques were used in the last half of the plant trial, and r.m.s. differences were 0.35 wt per cent solids and 1·5 wt per cent ash.

It has been worked since 1884-first for, silver, then for silver and lead, and at present for lead, silver, and zinc. No excuse seems necessary for placing before members even an imperfect report on the geological features of this notable ore deposit, since so little work has been done on the subject as to constitute almost a national reproach. This is the more deplorablesince the evidence laid open by mining operations is destroyed almost as soon as it is exposed, and there exists the real need of a continuous and connected record of geologieal developments.
