Mining, which is at least twenty cen-turies old, was at first, and long, wholly a practical art. Little more than two centuries have elapsed since the inception of the idea that general education and a knowledge of natural science would be of advantage to those engaged in the mining industry. Though schools of mining began to develop in Europe early in the eighteenth century the concept of educational preparation, for technical conduct of the industry was slow in winning general acceptance in the industry itself. John Hays Hammond, in his autobiography, recalls that when he sought employment with a mining company after he had graduated from Yale and Freiberg he had to assure its executive, before being even considered for employment, that he did not consider that he had learned anything about mining. This was as late as 1880. Existence in the industry of a prejudice against education of the academic type is perhaps an explanation why inadequate provision has been made by the mining industry for the continuing education of technical employees after they enter employment, although engineering education prior to engaging in industry has now won general acceptance. I am familiar with the existence of 'loop" courses for engineering graduates in metallurgical plants, of schemes for giving mining graduates "practical experience," and of the interest in vocational courses for workmen which sprang up in the period of labor shortage during and immediately following World War I (but which quickly died when the depression of 1921 again made experienced workmen available in sufficient supply), having been chairman of a committee appointed by the Mineral Industry Education Division to make a survey of existing provisions for post-employment training for engineers in our industry. The results of that survey, reported elsewhere, clearly indicate that it is inadequate as to amount; the aim of this paper is to present evidence for belief that it is also inadequate in quality. To avoid becoming too involved, no reference will be made here to post-employment vocational training for workmen, which is a subject differing so much from post-employment education for engineers as to require separate treatment. Neither will postgraduate education for metallurgical engineers be discussed, becadse a distinction must then be made between training for research work and for plant operation, whereas mining engineers engage almost exclusively in operations. Since the situation in the coal-mining industry has been discussed at several recent meetings, that also will be passed over, and what follows should be taken as a discussion applying exclusively to the metal-mining industry. Professional Development In the operations field (both in mining and metallurgy) the work to which a beginner is assigned is seldom closely related to previous academic education. Since the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. Standard Ball-mill Grindability Tests The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The combined minus 6-mesh screen undersize is mixed, sampled and screen-analyzed, and its apparent specific gravity is determined by packing and shaking in a standard container, and weighing. The apparent specific gravity ordinarily is about 60 per cent of the true specific gravity. The unit volume present in the mill .in all tests is 700 C.C. of the packed minus 6-mesh roll product, and the number of grams occupying 700 C.C. is the unit test weight. This weight is placed in the mill dry, ground for the number of revolutions estimated to be necessary, discharged, and screened mechanically in three testing sieves of the mesh size at which the test is to be conducted. The oversize, or circulating load, is weighed, sufficient fresh minus 6-mesh feed is added to bring the total weight up to that of 700 c.c., and the charge is returned to the mill for a second grinding period. All standard ball-mill tests are conducted at 250 per cent circulating load, and the number of revolutions in the mill necessary to obtain this circulating load at any grinding period is estimated from the results of the previous period. The number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution of the mill approaches its final equilibrium value after several grinding periods, and this is recorded as the grindability, or relative ease of grinding, of the sample. A cylindrical ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, with a smooth lining and rounded corners, is used with a revolution counter Under standard grinding conditions it runs at 70 r.p.m., and contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams, ranging from I½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Tests are conducted at the mesh size to which the ore is to be ground in practice, and the capacity- to be expected from a given mill is calculated by comparing the grindability with that of a similar standard ore whose performance characteristics arc known. Numerous determinations1-' of the texture of cold-rolled polycrystalline iron, steel, and ferritic alloys have been made with good agreement among the various observers as to the principal features of the texture common to all, but there has been no adequate explanation of the texture in terms of, the behavior of individual grains. This study presents an explanation of the texture based on the observed rotation of single crystals when deformed in a manner similar to a grain in the aggregate, a method we have found useful in leading to a better understanding of compression and tension textures;8,9,10 in particular, the aim has been to determine experimentally the end orientations of rolled single crystals of iron. These are discussed in connection with the point of view of Weverl and of Boas and Schmid2 that the rolling texture is a simple compression texture (compression normal to the rolling plane) superimposed on a simple tension texture (tension in the rolling direction), and the point of view of Kurdjumow and Sachs3 that three ideal end orientations exist. Experimental Method The single crystals used were in the form of disks cut from a stock of crystalst pre- pared in this laboratory by a strain-anneal method from mild steel decarburized and purified in hydrogen, the details of which have been described elsewhere.11 To ensure maximum elongation in the rolling direction and to simulate approximately the rolling of a grain in an aggregate, lateral flow was constrained by placing each crystal in a close-fitting hole in a plate of copper or iron of equal thickness and rolling the plate and crystal together. About one-third of the crystals were rolled in a "sandwich" pack by adding top and bottom cover plates. The two-high mill used had 8-in. diameter rolls and was operated at 15 r.p.m. The initial diameter of the crystals was between 1/4 and 1/2 in., while the starting thickness varied from 0.031 to 0.376 in. With a single exception, which was rolled 63 per cent, the crystals were rolled to a final reduction in thickness of 82 to 97 per cent in 20 to 40 passes, alternately changing the sense of the rolling direction. The initial orientations of the crystals were determined either by X-ray back reflection12 or by optical reflectionl3 from etch pits; the mean final orientations were determined by X-ray Laue photograms using molybdenum, silver, or tungsten radiations, by optical reflection, and in many cases by both methods. The Lehigh Navigation Coal Company Inc. operates steep-pitch, relatively deep mines in the Panther Creek Valley, at the eastern end of the southern anthracite coal field. Commercially minable coal beds are the Mammoth,† Primrose, Orchard, and Buck Mountain;‡ their respective thicknesses average 50, 15, 10 and 12 ft. Sand slates immediately overlie and underlie these beds, though in some locations sandstone or conglomerate beds occur. Underground operations extend to a depth of 1200 ft. below the surface, and comprise a bulk of virgin work on the lower levels, and a small amount of remining on the upper levels. With increase in depth, ventilation has become a more important factor. Development In early days slopes or drifts were driven in the outcropping coal on the hillsides. Subsequent development was by water-level tunnels, with portals above high water in Panther Creek. These tunnels have been maintained because they intercept and drain much water that enters the mined-out portion of the bed and otherwise would follow down to the deep workings+ Below these tunnels, the coal was customarily developed by slopes. Muleways, which are zigzag chutes easy to travel, were also driven to connect lower openings with the water levels. When it became necessary to go still deeper, the slopes were abandoned, and vertical multicompartment shafts were sunk from the surface. Levels have been at vertical intervals of from 175 to 250 ft. Recent practice has been toward the latter spacing, splitting the total lift, however, by starting to mine from chutes extending halfway up to the level above. Chutes customarily are spaced at 50, 60 or 70-ft. centers along the gangways. At some mines, additional shafts have been sunk from the surface to the level containing the main pumping station, and these carry the discharge lines from the pumps. As the mines are ventilated by the exhausting system, both the hoisting and so-called water shafts serve as intakes. The main fan is always on the surface, and is connected with the return airways from the various levels by an air hole or a vertical shaft. For economy, when the present deepest levels were developed, and return-air shafts or air holes were not extended to the new level, but connections were made from the new level to that above by two or more holes. It is doubtful that this method will be continued, as complications in the system, increased resistance to flow, and other difficulties undoubtedly will counterbalance any economies this provision may afford. The relation between permeability and the size parameters of unconsolidated sand is approached by considering sands as logarithmic frequency distributions having the basic parameters mean size and standard deviation. Sieve separates were mixed in accordance with the normal logarithmic probability law, so that the mean and standard deviation could be varied at will. Experiments were conducted in which one parameter was kept fixed and the other varied; in this manner the dependence of permeability on the individual parameters was evaluated. It was found that permeability can he expressed as the product of a power function of the mean size and an exponential function of the standard deviation. Earlier studies of the effect of size of particles on the permeability of uncon-solidated sand have shown that the permeability varies with the square of some average diameter. This was first pointed out by Hazenl in 1892 and verified by Slichter2 in 1898. Hazen's mean size was defined as the 10 percentile of the cumulative curve (i.e., size that is smaller than 90 pel cent of the distribution and larger than 10 per cent). Slichter's effective size, on the other hand, was found by Wilsey3,4 to agree with the 31 percentile. Fair and Hatch6 found that the geometric mean size of sieve separates yielded the same power function; Hulbert and Feben6 found that the permeability of sieve separates varied as the 1.89 power of the median diameter (i.e., the size associated with the 50 percentile of the cumulative curve). Relatively few studies included the effect of the "sorting" of the sediment on the permeability. It was recognized that the nature of the size distribution, in terms of the spread of the particles about the mean, affects the permeability, but no systematic investigations of this effect are known to the writers. Cloud7 demonstrated that the effect of the grain-size distribution on permeability is definitely measurable. In the present paper the authors investigate this relation analytically, and show that the effects of the size parameters on permeability may be predicted for at least a restricted set of conditions. Properties OF Sediments Recent investigations have shown that essentially all the geologically important characteristics of sediments may be expressed in terms of six measurable quanti-tities possessed by each clastic sedimentary particle. These attributes are: (I) size, (2) shape (sphericity), (3) roundness (angularity) , (4) mineralogical composition (density), (5) surface texture, (6) orientation. Each of these characteristics may be defined in several manners. Size may be expressed in terms of sieve mesh, settling velocity, volume, etc. Sphericity is a shape concept introduced by Wadell;8 it is essentially a measure of the ratio of the surface area of an equivalent sphere to the surface area of the particle. Recently the S-curves for 30 to 40 alloy steels have been pub1ished.l.2 These steels show individual characteristics, which make each additional S-curve of great interest. There are important differences in the mechanism of the transformation process, the type of transformation product, and the influence of alloying elements. Steels of the same general alloy composition may possess such variable characteristics with regard to the length of time of isothermal transformation that an S-curve for each heat of steel may be desirable. In the present work the isothermal transformation of a steel having the following composition and grain size was studied: 0.29 per cent carbon; 0.21 manganese; 0.026 phosphorus; 0.017 sulphur; 0.056 silicon; 1.45 chromium; 3.25 nickel; austenite grain size, 7. The progress of the isothermal transformation was followed by several different methods, including hardness measurements, dilatometer observations, and examinations of the microstructure. It was not expected that these methods would be in precise agreement.3 Accordingly, the changes in microstructure and hardness were given additional weight in determining the initial stage of transformation and the dilatometer measurements were relied on in estimating the completion of the process. The beginning of transformation was indicated by I per cent of transformation products and the end of transformation by about 99 per cent. The reproducibility of the various methods in the ranges of highest sensitivity was checked by several observations at each time and temperature. The steel used in this investigation was annealed for 24 hr, at 925°C. Macroetching revealed no serious segregation. The specimens for the metallographic and hardness investigations were 1¼ by ½ by ? in. Wires attached to the samples were used for handling. instead of tongs, to avoid chilling. The specimens were heated at 845°C. for ½ hr. and quenched into constant-temperature salt baths held at various temperatures from 205' to 650°C. The time required to transfer the specimens was found to be about 1½ sec., and nearly 5 sec. more was required for them to come to the temperature of the bath. After various lengths of time in the constant-temperature baths the specimens were quenched in water at 2I°C. The specimens were cut in half for the metallographic examination, to provide a surface free from decarburization. To determine the beginning and end of the transformation the percentage of transformation determined metallographically and by hardness was plotted against time. A planimeter was used in the metallographic determination. The hardness and metallographic determinations made at room temperature were confirmed reasonably well by dilatometer measurements taken during the process of transformation at the various temperatures. Generally speaking, there is nothing very difficult about taking good microgrztphs of photogenic thin sections or grains with a petrographic microscope-camera setup. However, sometimes it is desired to show some detail that cannot be illustrated satisfactorily by the usual micrographs taken with parallel polarized light, with crossed nicols, or even with two micrographs. A simple procedure giving good results has been used at Battelle Memorial Institute for subjects falling into this classification, and it is believed to be of interest, especially to research people who must sell a point to executives through the medium of well-illustrated reports. The following problem illustrates a typical application: It is desired to photograph a thin section of an iron ore to illustrate the character and association of the iron oxides and the individual quartz crystals. A magnification of 75 dia. is acceptable. A micrograph of the field in question (Fig. Ia) was taken with parallel polarized light. Due precaution was taken to provide critical illumination, correct exposure, a sharp focus, a good darkroom technique, and other essential conditions. It illustrates correctly the iron oxides, but it fails to show the individual quartz crystals. A micrograph of the identical field (Fig. Ib) was taken under the same precise conditions, but with crossed nicols. It gives a better idea of the character of the individual quartz crystals but is likely to be misinterpreted unless accompanied by a lengthy descriptive note. This micrograph suggests that the centrally located, large black area is composed entirely of iron oxides. That this' is an incorrect interpretation is evident by reexamining the micrograph of Fig. Ia. The correct interpretation is that the dark area contains quartz crystals oriented with their optical directions parallel to, or nearly parallel to, the vibration directions of the polarizer and analyzer of the microscope. Thus, the executive, or anyone who had not done the work personally, would get no more than a fair interpretation, even if two micrographs were included; and in the interests of both brevity and clarity, one micrograph usually is more desirable. Exactly how many quartz crystals occur in this region cannot be told from the two micrographs, and a printing of the two negatives in register would likewise not show the detail desired. Thus, it is evident that some subjects cannot be satisfactorily illustrated by the usual procedures. In photographing Fig. Ic the light was subdued and, during the entire exposure of 75 sec., the analyzer nicol was rotated uniformly in its mounting from a crossed position to 45° uncrossed position to introduce the desired amount of contrast in the various individual quartz crystals. The true reproduction of the character and association of the iron oxides, and the additional structure and detail in the quartz areas, is apparent. It might be

A test for determining the plugging characteristics of an oil-well injection water has been developed. It consists in measuring changes of the filter rate of a water at constant pressure with cumulative throughput when passing the water through a medium grade sintered glass disk. Application of the test method was made to the water used in the Union Oil Company's experimental water flood of the Chapman zone in the Richfield field, Orange County, Callfornia. This water developed increasing plugging tendencies upon aging, even though the finished water from the plant filter exhibited few such characteristics. The plugging material was found to consist of calcium carbonate, ferric hydroxide, and organic substances that were presumed to be bacterial. Various method of stabilizing this water to prevent the formation of plugging material were attempted. Lowering the pH to approximately 6.4 by injecting carbon dioxide provided a moderately satisfactory means for stabilization but a better method of stabilizing this water was found to be first aging and then filtering. Introduction An experimental water-flood project was started on the Chapman zone of the Richfield field in March 1944 and has been described in a previous paper.' It consists of a single injection well drilled between old producing wells. A water-treating plant using primary alum flocculation, sedimentation and chlorination followed by secondary flocculation, sedimentation and fltration is employed to process the water before in@ion. In all of the water-treating operations, the system is open to the air, and no attempt is made to prevent the loss of carbon dioxide or absorption of oxygen by the water. The clear water is stored in a covered concrete basin and pumped through a Transite line to the suction of a high-pressure pump at the injection well' The high-pressure tubing in the well to the injection zone is cement lined. The untreated injection water is a mixture produced with the oil from the Chapman and Kraemer zones and is supplied from the disposal system. Because the injection well was relatively deep (injection zone about 3400 ft.) and would be expensive to replace, it was believed imperative to supply a nonplug-ging injection water and to develop laboratory procedures for evaluating the treated injection water with respect to its formation plugging properties. This report describes the development and application of the test procedure based on the assumption that the plugging properties could be determined by measuring the progressive decrease in flow rate of the water through a porous medium. If the quality of the injection water was good enough so that the plugging action on the porous medium was of small magnitude, it was reasoned that the tendency to impair flow in the formation would not be serious.

INTRODUCTION IN underground mining operations the effects of economic and mechanical factors on costs and profits can readily be appreciated and can perhaps be expressed in exact figures and percentages. Less apparent, but frequently more important, is the influence of physical stress. Stress causes failure of supports, collapse of openings, rockbursts, and other damage which directly affects the costs of maintenance, and also to a certain extent the accident rate. Stress can, however, if properly directed, be an aid to mining operations. The caving methods in metal mining and the long-wall method in coal mining are well-known examples. In large-scale mining operations it is almost impossible to neglect stress-control. A better understanding of the mechanism of rock pressure and the application of its principles to practical mining will inevitably lead to a reduction in operating costs. Many theories have been advanced to give the mining engineer a practical outline for stress-control but, although today most experts agree upon the principles of stress distribution around underground openings, there is still no generally accepted theory that explains all phenomena. The main reasons for this incomplete understanding of the problem are the lack of accurate knowledge of the physical properties of rocks under field conditions, and the great complexity of these conditions due to inhomogeneity of the rock, stratification, tectonic disturbances, and many other unknown factors. The research on the rock pressure problems has, however, yielded some valuable facts which, expressed in practical terms, and adapted to local conditions, may become a valuable aid for mining operations. The purpose of this paper is to give a review of the most important accomplishments of this research with respect to the stress phenomena around small underground openings, such as tunnels and shafts, so as to arrive at an outline of the problem as it stands today. Special emphasis is placed on a new theory by the German mining engineer, Rudolf Fenner, which has never before been published or discussed in English. THE PRESSURE DOME THEORY The formation of a dome-shaped space around underground openings is well known from field observations. When openings are made in rock under stress, the rock in the top of the openings will often fail, and caving will continue until the openings have assumed a dome-shaped form, after which equilibrium apparently is re-established. The oldest theory which attempted to explain the phenomenon is the "beam" theory, which postulates that the hanging wall consists of stratified measures that behave as independent beams with fixed ends and a uniformly distributed load. When failure of the beam occurs, inward shearing at the ends will cause the formation of a dome-shaped space. The pressure dome theory, which more or less evolved from the beam theory, merely

One who attempts to collect and classify equilibrium data from various iron-alloy systems is soon struck with the absence of any quantitative theory that can serve as a general background against which to compare and contrast results from different systems, at different temperatures, and with different concentrations. It is not necessary to wait for a perfect theory; investigation of divergences of theory from observation may prove of great value in acquiring understanding of the subject. For example, one has only to think of Raoult's law as applied to aqueous solutions. The equations developed by Zener1 represent an effort to provide such a quantitative theoretical background, and it is therefore desirable to subject this theory to such tests as can be applied. The present article is intended to be an application of available tests, and may thus be considered as a supplement to Zener's paper. It is assumed that this paper is available to the reader. The equations make it possible to calculate the effect on the equilibrium concentration of one alloying element due to the presence of one or more other elements. In particular. they are intended to give, for alloy steels, the carbon concentrations in alpha and gamma phases in equilibrium with each other, and in gamma in equilibrium with cementite. They may, however, be modified for use for carbon-free alloys. A summary is given later of the equations used in analyzing the data in this paper, and the symbols are there defined. About 125 papers have been examined for experimental data suitable for this investigation. An effort was made to look up all available reports of ternary systems including iron and carbon, as well as similar systems of higher order. Supplementary material was also obtained from a number of binary systems. A few noncarbon ternary systems were also found to which these methods could be applied. A comparatively small proportion oi the papers read provided usable material. In many systems the number of quantitative observations made in the iron-rich region is extremely small, and the smoothed curves to be found in most published phase diagrams are entirely useless for quantitative treatment. This opinion is confirmed by the authors of the series on Alloys of Iron Research, whose remarks show clearly that they have no illusions as to the accuracy of many diagrams that they present. A further difficulty arises from the fact that these equations apply only to rather low percentages of alloying elements. The result is that at the lowest concentrations, where the best agreement might be hoped for, the errors of observation become relatively very large. The experimental difficulties in measurements of this kind of equilibrium are, of course, an old story.

During the course of an investigation of the plastic flow of aluminum aircraft sheet under combined loads, several problems arose in which analyses of the conditions leading to unstable plastic flow were needed. In order to provide these analyses, and in the hope of attaining a better understanding of the general problem of unstable plastic flow, the present study was undertaken. It is well known that unstable plastic flow is associated with a form of mechanical instabi!ity frequently observed during the plastic deformation of ductile metals. This instability is characterized by the fact that, at its onset, plastic straining mill proceed at a constant magnitude of the externally applied forces. It is further typical that the resulting unstable flow is generally accompanied by the formation of a neck, a local bulging, or some other form of heterogcneous deformation. Perhaps the most familiar example of unstable plastic flow to the metallurgist is the formation of the neck in the ordinary tension test. It is well known that in this test most metals exhibit a maximum in the externally applied load, followed by the process commonly referred to as "necking down." Instability in the simple tension test has been frequently discussed and numerous investigators1'2'3'12 have derived the criterion for instability in terms of a critical rate of strain hardening. It is the purpose of the present study to extend the criterion for unstable flow to the more general case where the body undergoing flow is subjected to combined loads. It is hoped that the problems considered will provide a more consistent picture of the general features of this important form of mechanical instability. The most practical implications of instability in plastic flow arise in connection with sheet metal forming operations. In the formation of a great many sheet metal parts, the deformations are produced primarily by stretching. Since the earliest years of recorded history the durability and protective qualities of asphalt and tar have been known and utilized. The mummies of early Egyptian kings were coated with asphaltic materials, and asphalt mastics were common in Babylon. However, according to various authorities, it was not until 1780 that the first forerunner of present-day composition roofing was discovered,l and the large-scale expansion of the industry has taken place since 1900. Historical Background Development was stimulated by the growing popularity of manufactured gas. The by-product tars from these operations accumulated in large waste piles that had no commercial value and were a source of annoyance and expense to the gas companies. These tars were offered at very attractive terms to anyone who would take them away, and the infant "composition" roofing industry benefited accordingly. At first the process consisted simply of dipping sheets of burlap or other fabric in a tank of molten tar or asphalt. The long strip of roofing was rolled up for convenient handling, and the early experimenters soon found that it was necessary to dust the surface of their new "roll roofing" with some kind of material that would prevent the tarred surfaces from sticking together. Any finely divided, low- priced local material like sand or fine gravel served this purpose and from its application the roofing-granule industry grew. As time went on other characteristics of a properly applied mineral surfacing were recognized. As with wooden shingles, tar and asphalt can be ignited by flying embers from near-by fires. It was found that by increasing the largest particle size to the maximum that could be successfully embedded, and by properly controlling the amount of smaller fractions retained in the grade so as to cover the asphalt completely a high degree of resistance to fire was attained. Needless to say, in this early period asphaltic roofing needed such selling points to gain acceptance in a field dominated by wood, slate, and tile. When asphalt is protected from the sun's rays it is extremely durable, but when exposed to sunlight its surface is comparatively rapidly decomposed. Completely covering asphalt roofing with mineral surfacing protects the asphalt and adds materially to the life of the roof—conservatively, 500 per cent. Slate Graftules In the production of split slate shingles a large quantity of waste slate is accumulated, as 60 to go per cent of the rock quarried is discarded. This waste was a continuing burden on the industry. Some was marketed as ground slate flour for filler in paint and linoleum, and there is a record that as early as 1906 two carloads of coarse screenings from slate flour were marketed as granules for surfacing roofing. The physical properties of the materials are listed, together with a short explanation of how this material binds the sand grains together without materially reducing the effective permeability of the sand. The chemical can be used in wells with bottom-hole temperatures ranging from 105°F to more than 350°F A description of the equipment required and the techniques used for applying these plastics to the wells is included. Introduction Recovering oil and gas from unconsoli-dated sand formations offers one of the most troublesome of all production problems. These sands generally present no particular trouble while drilling is in progress, but after the well has been completed and a pressure differential has been established across the face of the producing zone, the formation begins to L'slough," resulting in "sanding up" of the well. The term "sanding up" means that sufficient volumes of sand have moved into the well bore or casing to cause a serious reduction or complete halt of all flow of oil, water or gas. In rare cases a well may produce only a small amount of sand and still continue to flow or pump, the sand being carried to the surface in the fluid stream. However, in such instances, the result may be a costly repair bill due to the effect of the sand on surface and pumping equipment. The difficulty of producing petroleum from sands that are loosely cemented has long been recognized by petroleum engineers but only within the last few years has any new approach to the problem been undertaken. This involves the use of plastics that are capable of bonding the individual sand grains in place without materially reducing the effective permeability of a formation. The successful application of plastics for the consolidation of poorly cemented sands is relatively recent but now it is widely used in many of the more difficult areas on the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. This relatively new use of plastics1 in the oil fields has been preceded by much laboratory and field research on the use of various chemicals2,3 for solving numerous well-completion and work-over problems. Plastics now are being used successfully to control gas-oil and water-oil ratios,4'6 in zone isolation, the repair of casing leaks, the elimination of caving in cable-tool drilling wells6'7 and in the setting of linerss and casing.9 Sand-consolidating plastics, however, are basically different from all others in that they must not form an impervious seal. Field Practices The approach to the sanding-up problem usually has been the mechanical obstruction of the movement of the sand grains.

Orientation relationships and rates of annealing of 97 pct cold rolled zirconium have been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurements. The process of annealing occurring by the formation of domains, and their subsequent growth without recrystallization, is demonstrated. NUMEROUS investigators1-' have revealed sub-grain formation after annealing cold worked metal single crystals and have generally described the results in terms of a dislocation mechanism of polygonization.5,6 in heavily cold rolled polycrystal-line aluminum the first stages of heating cause an apparently spontaneous subdivision of regions of the deformed matrix into a great number of slightly disoriented domains followed or accompanied by rapid growth of certain domains to form a recrystallization texture.7,8 In the present investigation the isothermal rate of annealing of cold worked polycrystalline zirconium has been studied by X-ray techniques, metallography, and by hardness measurement. It will be shown that, rather than by the usual nucleation and growth mechanism,"12 the process of annealing can best be explained by the formation of domains early in the annealing treatment and the subsequent growth of these domains without recrystallization. Experimental Procedure All the experimental work was performed on an arc-melted ingot of high purity zirconium crystal bar made by Westinghouse in a production scale deBoer unit. The weight percentage of impurities in the zirconium were as follows: C, 0.04; Fe, 0.05; Hf, 0.014; W, 0.01; Ti, Ni, and Al, 0.003; Si and N, 0.002; Cr and Cu, 0.001. Metallographically the zirconium showed only a single phase. The 4 in. diarn ingot was forged at 760°C to a 1 1/2x3 in. plate and was then rolled at 760°C to 0.150 in. thickness and annealed at this temperature for 20 min to produce an equiaxed grain structure of about 0.1 mm average grain diameter. The hot rolled plate was roller-leveled, surface ground to 0.135 in., cold rolled 83 pct reduction in thickness on a two-high mill, and then to a total reduction of 97 pct on a Sendzimir mill. The 0.004 in. strip material so produced received no subsequent mechanical treatment. Specimens % in. square were sheared from the rolled strip and isothermally annealed at 104 mm Hg in an all glass vacuum system equipped with a Vycor furnace tube. The temperature data presented are the average temperatures during the runs and did not vary more than about k3"C. X-ray Diffraction Methods: When zirconium is drastically cold rolled, a high degree of preferred orientation results in which prism poles, {1010}, are perpendicular to the rolling direction. Granules are used primarily as roofing material. From the earliest times, man has been faced with the basic problem of providing protection for himself, his family, and his property against the ravages of the weather. Basically, this problem is no different today than in the past, except that today the trend is to demand shelter which is also colorful and distinctive. There has been a gradual evolution from the thatched roof to the modem ranchstyle home. In his search for a more permanent and more attractive roof, the home owner has utilized many mineral materials. All granules, whether slate or colored granules, are referred to by the asphalt roofing industry as "Slate Granules." Early Roofing Materials The development of mineral roofing in the United States followed two trends: first, the slate industry, and second, the bituminous products. The early colonists were familiar with slab slate construction from Europe and it was natural for them to continue with this type of roofing. As early as 1780, the forerunners of the present bituminous products were finding favor. Those early products consisted of saturating burlap or similar material with crude tar or pitch. This type of roofing was soon improved by dusting a variety of materials on the surface of the roofing to prevent adhesion while in rolls. Such factors as fire resistance and protection from the actinic rays of the sun soon followed. This started the general pattern which is still followed today, that is, saturating felt materials and supplying a uniform grade of crushed mineral to the surface. In commercial and public buildings, metal roofs found early favor. The attractive green color of verdigris-coated copper became a symbol of churches and institutions of learning. Aluminum roofing has become economical for large structures and is finding limited popularity in rural areas. Tile, asbestos, and cement materials, being weather resistant, found early acclaim and are still popular. Today, by far the most widely used roofing materials in the United States are asphalt products. Two important characteristics-economy and weatherability-account for their popularity. Influence of Building Trends on Roofing The postwar building boom in 1947 had many attractive features for the American people. The ranch-style one story type of home seemed well suited for suburban developments which sprang up in such profusion. As the roof in modern home construction is one of the most conspicuous aspects of its architecture, the home owner could now express his tastes not only in paint and landscaping, but could also select an attractive and harmonious roof color. Variety of Minerals Used Many naturally occurring minerals are used today in the roofing industry. INTRODUCTION A small, independent mining enterprise (SIME) is an independently owned and operated business concern engaged primarily in mineral development, from the exploration to the production stage. A SIME may or may not be listed on stock exchanges. By definition, a SIME is not dominant in its field and has no long-term financial backing. As such, it is not a major producer of minerals, nor is it a petroleum company, a government organization or a subsidiary of such organizations. The survival and growth of a SIME is most often controlled by an independently minded entrepreneur, who not only conceives and carries out new projects, but is materially affected by the success or failure of these projects. Usually, a SIME does not have a large or constant cash flow. Such a lack of long-term financial backing forces the SIME to meet the challenge of finding capital for its activities on a step-by-step basis. Its survival strategy is thus based on finding funds at the right time, of the right type and in the right quantities. The purpose of this paper is to show that the type of venture in which a SIME is involved affects the difficulty of raising new capital and the choice of possible sources of funds. The Small, Independent Mining Enterprise The SIME, also called small miner, junior mining company, speculative mining company, and pennystock mining company, is not a figment of the imagination of financial speculators. In Canada, there are more than 1,800 small mineral enterprises which spend on the average less than $1,000,000 per year on activity which is directed at bringing forth new mineral supply. In the United States, 64 percent of the non-fuel mining operations are conducted by nine or fewer men, and the coal industry is characterized by several thousand smaller independent producers, still predominantly family-owned or controlled. In Chile, 80 percent of the mines can be classified as small mines. In the Philipines, approximately 60 percent of metal mining operations are classified as small mines. The SIME is actively engaged in mining all over the world, and very much so in the Pacific Rim. The Mineral Supply Process The whole process of bringing forth new mineral supply involves a dynamic sequence of activities, ranging from the initial exploration for a mineral occurrence to the production of a marketable product. A typical sequence is outlined in Figure 1. At the grass-roots exploration stage, a series of geological, geophysical and geochemical tests is aimed at locating a mineral occurrence. Especially in the early phases of such activities, the uncertainty (risk) surrounding a venture is high, since only general geological information exists on which to base a judgement of the economic viability of the venture. Such risk is attractive to few investors.

SINCE 1023, which closed the speculative era in the bituminous coal fields of the United States, there have been wide annual fluctuations in the national production of bituminous coal. These changes in annual output have been variously attributed to: (I) increased competition from petroleum products, natural gas and hydroelectric power; (2) lower unit consumption of coal; and (3) fluctuations in the general business level. The purpose of this paper is to measure, from a practical standpoint, the net effect upon the annual trend of bituminous coal production, and to give those who are interested a basis for estimating in advance the probable output of bituminous coal. It can readily be shown that changes in the level of general business affect the national production of bituminous coal more than does any other factor. Therefore it is necessary to use some standard measure of the relative business level for purposes of comparison. The Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production offers the basis for such a measure.' This Index, a weighted composite of 81 different series, rests upon the averages of the years 1935 to 1939 as loo, and is presented graphically in Fig. I. Even a cursory examination of the chart will indicate a definite uptrend for industrial production over a period of years. This uptrend is due to at least two factors: (I) an actual increase in national population, and (2) a probable increase in the per capita consumption of goods. This means that there is no such thing as a fixed Normal, rather Normal is a variable, tending to increase from year to year. In order to measure the amount of annual increase in normal, the Index of Industrial Production must be studied in relation to its major components, Durable Goods and Nondurable Goods. Durable Goods are those made from the lasting materials such as iron, steel, other metals, lumber, stone, cement, clay, glass. Nondurable Goods are those for early consumption, such as foods, textiles, tobacco, chemicals, paper, gasoline, and goods made of leather and rubber. The purchase of Durable Goods may be postponed, but Nondurable Goods must be purchased currently unless the standard of living is lowered. The Federal Reserve Indexes of durable and nondurable goods are shown graphically, 1920 to 1939, on Fig. 2 (pp. 764-765 of ref. I). It is apparent that fluctuations in the production of nondurable goods are not nearly so wide as in the production of durable goods, and that the curve of Industrial Production (Fig. I) would fall between the two curves on Fig. 2. It would, however, seem logical that both curves should follow the same long-term trend, or that over a period of two to three decades the relative proportion of durable and nondurable goods, in periods of normal production, should he the same. Since the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. Standard Ball-mill Grindability Tests The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The combined minus 6-mesh screen undersize is mixed, sampled and screen-analyzed, and its apparent specific gravity is determined by packing and shaking in a standard container, and weighing. The apparent specific gravity ordinarily is about 60 per cent of the true specific gravity. The unit volume present in the mill .in all tests is 700 C.C. of the packed minus 6-mesh roll product, and the number of grams occupying 700 C.C. is the unit test weight. This weight is placed in the mill dry, ground for the number of revolutions estimated to be necessary, discharged, and screened mechanically in three testing sieves of the mesh size at which the test is to be conducted. The oversize, or circulating load, is weighed, sufficient fresh minus 6-mesh feed is added to bring the total weight up to that of 700 c.c., and the charge is returned to the mill for a second grinding period. All standard ball-mill tests are conducted at 250 per cent circulating load, and the number of revolutions in the mill necessary to obtain this circulating load at any grinding period is estimated from the results of the previous period. The number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution of the mill approaches its final equilibrium value after several grinding periods, and this is recorded as the grindability, or relative ease of grinding, of the sample. A cylindrical ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, with a smooth lining and rounded corners, is used with a revolution counter Under standard grinding conditions it runs at 70 r.p.m., and contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams, ranging from I½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Tests are conducted at the mesh size to which the ore is to be ground in practice, and the capacity- to be expected from a given mill is calculated by comparing the grindability with that of a similar standard ore whose performance characteristics arc known.
