BY the beginning of 1945 the output of petroleum products for war had reached a volume and a rate of growth which practically assured all requirements so long as war continued. The programs for making gasoline, lubricating oils of required quality, toluene for T.N.T., and chemicals for manufacture of synthetic rubber, as well as numerous other lesser petroleum products, were all well in hand, and unless catastrophic developments occurred there was no doubt of the ability of the industry to meet all demands. The end of the fighting found the refining industry working at top capacity on war commodities, but also in position to convert quickly into peacetime civilian production. 100-octane Aviation Gasoline Production of the vital 100-octane aviation gasoline, starting with approximately 44,000- bbl. daily capacity at our entry into the war, reached a top of 525,000 bbl. a day in the United States by the end of hostilities. With 75,- bbl. from other Allied sources, the grand total was 600,000 bbl., or 25,000,000 gal. each 24 hr. available to the armed forces had fighting continued. At times it was a close race between requirements and production, but never were any important military operations involving the use of high-octane aviation gasoline held up or delayed for lack of sufficient output of such material. The undivided effort of the entire refining industry in full cooperation with the Government made this record possible. Little diminution in output followed the German surrender on May 7. Plans called for a correspondingly greater activity for the Japanese war and possibly for well into 1946. But when the Japanese sued for peace on Aug. 10 most contracts were quickly canceled. Substantial stocks, reputed to be somewhere between 20,000,000 to 30,000,000 bbl., built up largely between V-E and V-J day pending organization of the larger Japanese war program envisaged after Germany gave up, were in the Government's hands in this country, in addition to working stocks in the war areas. Toluene and Lubricating Oil Requirements for toluene for T.N.T. increased rapidly as bombing speeded UP with increasing control of the air by the Allies in Europe and Asia. Production in excess of T.N.T. requirements which had been going into 1000-Octane aviation fuel blending during 1943 and 1944 was again drawn into explosive manufacture early in 1945. In anticipation of the war continuing into 1946, two new plants were ordered constructed, the decision being announced in April, plans calling for one of them to get into production about the end of 1945, the other in the first quarter of 1946. BECAUSE of the many conflicting opinions regarding the functioning of the ball load and the characteristics of ball wear in ball-mill grinding, the following resume of reports covering recent tests conducted at the Hayden plant of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is submitted with the view of pointing out certain salient features that should throw additional light on the subject. MILLS USED Cylindrical drum mills with trunnion feed and discharge were used. The discharge trunnion was I3 1/2 in. in diameter. Dimensions inside the lining were 6 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 9 ft. 6 in. long. The mills were Britannia-lined and nine lifter bars projected 2 in. from the lining. The mill speed was 16 2/3 r.p.m. Feed to the mill was 9 per cent on 10-mesh, 85 per cent on 100-mesh, 77 per cent solids. New balls measured 2 in. in diameter and the approximate weight of the ball load was 40,000 pounds. INITIAL TEST During a test that was being conducted to determine the relative economic value of standard cast balls vs. forged steel balls in the local grinding operation, certain observations were made in regard to the functioning of the various ball sizes and the characteristics of ball wear, which warranted a supplementary test for the purpose of confirming such observations. For the initial test, the necessity for developing a graduated load of the new forged balls before the test could be started was realized, but the time required to obtain a graduated load and the functioning of the various ball sizes was not clear. No advantage could be seen for starting out with a full load of forged balls, as this initial load, at the least, would have to be completely ground out and replaced by daily additions of balls before the graduation could be complete and a normal static condition of ball sizes reached. For a considerable period prior to exhaustion of this initial charge there would be an unusual quantity of worn balls of a certain size, which would not be typical of a normal charge and could influence the characteristics and functioning of the entire load. Therefore, it was decided to start by daily addition of the forged balls to a mill that contained a normal operating load of cast balls. After 88 days of operation the mill was shut down for inspection. By that time the load consisted of a mass of forged balls functioning around a large core of the residual material of the former cast-ball load. This core of cast slugs, locally referred to as "the kidney," was well defined from the forged-ball load.

The shaft of the Raven mine, at Butte, Mont., is an incline 1,700 ft. in length and dipping at various angles. At the top the dip is 70" from the horizontal, but this is gradually flattened until at the 300-ft. level the inclination is only 47. This angle continues to the 1,100-ft. level, below which it curves with a 125-ft. radius to 78". In addition to these variations in dip, the shaft does not lie in the same vertical plane, with the result that the hoisting rope not only rubs at intervals on both the hanging and foot walls, but presses strongly against the west dividers near the collar, while 300 ft. below it runs close to the east end plates. The early operators used no idlers, aid wall plates cut 6 in. deep by the rope resulted. Later operators first attempted to overcome the excessive friction, and the wear of rope and wall plates, by introducing solid cast-iron idlers, 3 in. in diameter. To allow for the travel of the rope from side to side some of these had to be 3 ft. long and were very heavy. Judging from the appearance of the old idlers of this type found at the mine, they often failed to turn in the bearings, which is not surprising when it is considered that they would have to make 1,000 rev. a minute under ordinary hoisting conditions. The next rolls were made of wood, 6 in. in diameter, with an iron band about each end, and a pintle of 1-in. round steel driven in at the ends to serve as a shaft. These wore rapidly, and were soon replaced by rolls made from water pipe, 5 or 6 in. in diameter, cut to the desired length and fitted with a wooden cylinder into which the pintle was driven. Where the idlers were used on the hanging wall of the shaft the original bearing was simply a piece of + by 1 3/2 in. strap iron, 10 in. long, turned up at the end in a circle 11/8 in. in diameter to receive the shaft. A small hole served for oiling, and common black oil was generally used, although filtered oil from engine bearings and compressor bearings was also used. When the rolls were to be placed on the foot wall the bearings were made from two pieces of 1 by 3 in. steel, 6 in. long. A half circle was cut on the flat side of each piece and the two half circles together formed a bearing. Oil holes were provided, and in some cases holes were bored through the two pieces so that they could be screwed or spiked to the wall plates.

Originally, mining machines were actuated by purely mechanical mechanisms comprising cams, levers and gear trains, which became more and more complex as demands were made for additional operations that would increase mine tonnage. To simplify these intricate machines, development engineers began utilizing the principles of high-pressure hydraulics long employed for the control of various machine tools. The resulting specificially developed hydraulic systems are. now literally the heart of the mining machine. During world war NO. 2, very little fundamental change in design was made in existing mining machines, but because of the recognition of the merits of hydraulic application to the machines of war, it is reasonably certain that hydraulics will be applied to mining machines in the future to a much greater extent. This potential future indicates that a more thorough knowledge of hydraulics and its maintenance must be incorporated in mine operation. Maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic equipment varies considerably with respect to mine practice and conditions. The success or failure is largely dependent upon the hydraulic fluid and its care. Since all successful hydraulic systems have been designed around the use of mineral oil as the fluid, a complete analysis of this prime factor should be made to make clear the requirements of the fluid in a hydraulic system. Contamination of Oil Manufacturers of mining machinery usually have specified an S.A.E. rating or viscosity index of the proper mineral oil for use with their respective machines without considering the fact that many oils will meet these specifications but will not give the desired life or efficient operation. Hydraulic fluid should be specified as a good grade of mineral oil, such as turbine oil, having rust and oxidation resistance. It must have high chemical stability, high lubricity, and proper viscosity. These factors will minimize maintenance costs by reducing wear and the consequent replacement of parts, and at the Same time will lower costs for the oil by extending its life. Rulk purchases of oil should be limited to small sealed containers provided with a Proper pouring spout, thus reducing the possibility of contamination of the oil before it reaches the mining machine. The introduction of foreign matter, such as sand, water, coal dust and residue oil left in filling containers, will cause untold damage and maintenance expense. Sand, being one of the best natural abrasives1 will soon wear the close tolerances of the various hydraulic mechanisms to an extent that will necessitate complete replacement. Water is considered normally insoluble in oil, but because of the churning action of a hydraulic system water is broken down to particles so small that they remain in suspension. Tins paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. CAPACITY Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a give time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: TR = TR80KK'K" [I] in which Ts, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific gravity range - 2.5 to 2.7 - T should. be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppard1 has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5 : 1 : 0.6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:0.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for 150 + 200-mesh pyrite to be 1.4: 1 : 0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciable tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product. It is best determined from screen tests.

Discussion of the paper of GEORGE S. Rice, presented. at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2459 to 2492. WILLIAM GRIFFITH, Scranton, Pa.-I notice in the discussions and literature that emphasis is placed on rock dust, shale dust, and limestone dust, and I infer that these different. sorts of rock are ground up to produce this dust. -Is that right? MR. RICE.-That is correct, but we do not have to grind the limestone dust we are using in the experimental mine, as that is obtained from a quarry, and is used just as it comes; we can get it very cheaply, as it is a by-product of the quarries. MR. GRIFFITH.-Have any experiments been made with ordinary dirt out of the fields; could not that be used as ground dust? MR. RICE.-If you dry it and powder it enough so it will float in a, strong air current it might be all right for the barriers, but if it is damp there will be a tendency for it to mat together; then it would be quite useless for making a dust cloud. There might also be another disadvantage if used through the whole mine, if it had very much free silica in it, which is bad for the lungs. Limestone and selected shale dust would not affect the health of miners. MR. GRIFFITH.-In order to do very much good with any of those barriers, they ought to be rather extensively used throughout the mines, and there are few mines that have facilities for grinding up this rock into such a fine dust. If the ordinary earth from a plowed field could be used, even if it were not quite so good, it is more accessible and very much cheaper; therefore, in using it, with the universality of the supply through-out the country, it would tend to stop explosions. MR. RICE (communication to the Secretary*).-In closing, it is well to again emphasize that I do not advocate barriers being a "cure-all" for explosions. It will be generally agreed that prevention is best, not only by means of improved methods of using explosives, and ventilation to prevent accumulations of firedamp, but also by either thoroughly wetting the dust throughout the mine, or else so treating it with rock dust or other inert dust that an explosion cannot start. From my observations I believe that rock dusting. is a practicable method, and has the merit of visibility, and remaining effective for considerable periods, whereas the watering method has to be daily followed up, and if neglected for a short period the mine may become in a dangerous condition. SOME of the principal metallurgical difficulties en-countered in the differential flotation of lead-zinc-iron sulfide ores arise from the following causes: The oxidized, or partly-oxidized, condition of one or more of the minerals ; impurities in the minerals them-selves; composition and character of the gangue miner-als; soluble salts in the ore; and unfavorable metal ratios. In many of the ores received at a custom mill there are present appreciable amounts of oxidized' or partly-oxidized minerals, although the ores may be substantially sulfides. Often the ores are not oxidized at all when received but on account of operating condi-tions at the mill it is necessary to stock them for several months before they can be milled, and considerable oxi-dation takes place while they are lying in stock. In most ores received at Midvale, when oxidation is pres-ent, the lead and iron sulfides have been more affected than the zinc sulfide, but with some ores the zinc mineral has also become partly oxidized. Some ores, such as those taken from old mine-dumps or from old stopes, may show very little total oxidation, but the greater part of the valuable minerals has been sufficiently acted upon by oxidation to make the minerals very difficult to float. Ores of this character are among the most difficult the flotation operator has to contend with, be-cause the galena, sphalerite, and pyrite are all sluggish in their behavior in the flotation cells. Only a part of the lead mineral will float in the lead circuit. The re-mainder will lag badly and tend to come up with the zinc or, if badly oxidized, will go -through all the flota-tion circuits into the tailing. The zinc mineral, if it has also been affected by oxidation, will act in a man-ner similar to the lead mineral. A hard pull will be required to float a reasonable percentage of it, and this is likely to bring up so much pyrite that it will be difficult to make a zinc concentrate of commercial grade. If it happens that the zinc mineral has not been no-ticeably affected by oxidation it will tend to float in the lead circuit because a hard pull is also required in that circuit in order to bring up the sluggish galena. When only a fraction of the sulfide minerals has become partly altered, or completely oxidized mineral is present in relatively small quantity, it is usually possible to make reasonably clean concentrates of all three sulfides, that is, lead, zinc and iron concentrates. Most of the oxi-dized and semi-oxidized minerals will go into the tailing and the losses will be proportional to the oxidation.

A roasting procedure for synthetic copper sulfide which results in a reproducible transient melting at 450° and 470°C is described in this paper. Possible causes for this melting phenomenon are suggested, and also a procedure to avoid it during the roasting. This melting is believed to be responsible for the occasional occurrence of stickiness in the commercial roasting of copper sulfide concentrate. Many workers have studied the roasting of copper sulfides, but only Lewis et al. have reported that fusion and, in some cases, fusion with "boiling" occurred in the neighborhood of 450°C. The DTA and TGA apparatus, the materials used in this investigation, and the discussion of chemical reactions occurring during the CuS roasting are described in an earlier publication. CuS, in the form of either pellet or powder, was heated at 280° to 330°C in a flowing air or 30% 02: 70% N2 atmosphere. Heating was continued at this temperature until no further weight increase due to sulfates formation was observed on the TGA thermogram. This is believed to be due to the inability of SO, to diffuse out from the sulfate layer on the surface of the pellet, thus halting the sulfate-forming reactions. Hereafter, the sample oxidized in this manner will be referred to as "partially oxidized CuS." X-ray analysis and microscopic examination of a polished cross section of a partially oxidized CuS pellet showed the following order of layers starting from the center of the pellet: Cu2S, Cu2O, CuO • CUSO4, and CuSO4. A bare thermocouple inserted in the center of a partially oxidized CuS pellet (2.5 g) did not indicate any noticeable change in the temperature of the pellet when melted at 450° to 470°C in an inert or oxidizing atmosphere. During the preparation of a partially oxidized pellet, the temperature of a CuS pellet increased by 50°C due to the exothermic formation of sulfates in air at 320°C. The endothermic peak associated with the melting phenomenon at 450°C is shown in [Fig. 1.] A CuS pellet (0.2 g) was oxidized in flowing air (150 cc per min) at 10°C per min up to 320°C and held there for about 2 hr. Then, N2 replaced air and heating was continued up to 500°C. The exothermic peak at 320°C represents an overall formation of sulfates, and an endothermic peak at 450° to 470°C represents the melting phenomenon. To observe the melting visually, a small (50 mg), partially oxidized CuS pellet was heated (in static air) in a hot-stage microscope. The melting phenomenon was observed on an auxiliary TV screen. In the recent paper of Richardson and Perkins entitled "A Laboratory Investigation of the Effect of Rate on Recovery of Oil by Water Flooding,"' the authors found very little appzrent effect on oil recovery of having free gas saturation present prior to water flooding in unconsolidated sands. We agree that the effect in this particular system was small but do not feel that the data presented should be regarded as disproving work of others which has shown an appreciable effect. The authors do not make such a claim, but neither do they advance an explanation of the difference. In our experience the following factors must be carefully considered when studying the relation between residual oil saturation after water flooding and initial free gas saturation: (1) the magnitude of the inherent residual oil saturation, i.e., the residual oil saturation with no free gas; (2) the increase in oil-water viscosity ratio with pressure lowering if the gas saturation is obtained by solution gas drive; and (3) the oil shrinkage which occurs with pressure lowering and gas evolution. The system studied by Richardson and Perkins gave residual oil saturations as low as 20 per cent without free gas present, and one should perhaps not expect much further lowering. As an illustration of the magnitude of the effect when the residual oil saturation is inherently higher we submit the accompanying figure. These data were obtained on an unconsolidated sand under elevated pressure in a system similar to the one described by Richardson and Perkins. Gas saturation was established by gas drive before water flooding. The viscosity ratio was 600:1 under the conditions of the displacement. Here the gas was extremely effective in reducing residual oil saturation. This fact was also indicated by Kyte, et al.2 Their plots of residual oil saturation vs initial gas saturation show trends of greater free gas effect with higher oil viscosities. The pressure-dependent effects were not discussed by Richardson and Perkins. They should be separated from the free gas effect if the objective of the study is a correlation of residual oil saturation vs initial free gas saturation. The increase in oil viscosity when gas is released from solution tends to increase residual oil saturation. This effect is rather small in the viscosity range of kerosene. A Buckley-Leverett calculation, assuming an increase in viscosity ratio from 1.2 to 1.8, indicates an increase in residual oil saturation of about 1 per cent of pore volume. Thus, one would expect this system, if operated at constant viscosity ratio, to show a slightly greater free gas effect. As Dyes- as shown, oil shrinkage can offset the beneficial effect of free gas on waterflood oil recovery, if the gas saturation is established by depletion. Since

During the two years that the Henderson plant has been in operation, a number of technical improvements have been made by the staff of Basic Magnesium, Inc., the effects of which were realized subsequent to the writing of the paper by Major C. J. P. Ball (p. 28j, this volume). Pellet Mix The process as originally installed required the use of peat moss in the mixture going to the chlorinators. This had to be imported from Canada at a considerable cost, and, besides being expensive, constituted a serious fire hazard in the dry climate of Nevada. Experimentation looking toward its elimination had been going on for some time and was actively pushed as soon as operations commenced. It was found that a pellet mix containing no peat, which would chlorinate at a satisfactory rate, could be cast as a fluid slurry, which would set up into a hard mass having the desired porosity. For carrying out this operation, equipment similar to that used in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizer at Anaconda, Mont., was installed and proved eminently successful. The dry materials, with peat moss and raw concentrates entirely eliminated, are mixed with magnesium chloride solution in two Pratt phosphate mixers and the resultant slurry is poured onto two 48-in. slowly moving rubber conveyor belts. By the time the slurry has reached the head pulley, the material has set su4iciently to be broken and sized as desired. The discharge from the casting belts is fed to the four rotary kilns in the preparation plant, where it is dried and coked to the proper degree for subsequent chlorination. With the peatless feed the capacity of the kilns was found to be about double what it had been before, so that the four rotaries suffice for a 10-unit operation, thus making it unnecessary to operate the extruders and tunnel kilns. In addition to saving the cost of the peat, the new system can be operated with about 85 per cent less labor than was formerly required in the preparation plant. The new pellet production system has also made it feasible to install centralized crushing equipment with suitable conveyors and a loading station. Containers of 8000 lb. capacity were substituted for small cubicles of 1000 lb. capacity which formerly were used for charging the chlorinators, and trailer trucks were substituted for the small trains originally provided for transportation from the preparation plant to the chlorinators. These changes resulted in a considerable saving in handling and transportation charges. Handling Molten Metal The molten magnesium originally was ladled from the electrolytic cells into small gas-fired brick-lined cars standing between the cell rows. THE mining district of São Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Mineração de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in Sao Fidelis-the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. MINERALIZATION AND ORES The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60° and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Macabú), the São Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and São Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in São Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydrothermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. THE drill sampling and evaluation of the Piney River ilmenite property was carried out during the early part of 1944 by E. J. Longyear Co., using the company's standard core-drill outfits to complete 44 holes to an average depth of 110 ft., from which were collected 1100 samples. The Piney River ilmenite-apatite lode is 25 miles north of Lynchburg, in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia (Fig. I). Its elevation is about 900 ft. above sea level and it lies in the old pre-Cambrian complex of crystalline rocks that make up the Piedmont physiographic province lying east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The terrain is gently rolling and well watered, and is drained by the Piney and Tye Rivers, which are tributary to the James. GEOLOGY The Piney River ore body comprises the upper, weathered part of a tabular basic rock, which occurs in a large area of granite-gneiss. The section containing profitable ore is about 3000 ft. long. It is separated naturally by thinning, into northeastern and southwestern segments with widths of 300 and 100 ft. respectively. The dip averages 45° southeast but steepens locally (Figs. 2 and 3). The unaltered rock is an even, granular mixture of feldspar, ilmenite, and apatite, to which Watson1 gave the name Nelsonite. The decomposed ore body, which is now being exploited by open cut, is a yellowish clay material in which black ilmenite and glassy apatite are the only conspicuous minerals. An economically important structural feature of the deposit is a banding of minerals coinciding with the dip and strike of the dike. This is more promounced in the footwall of the northeastern part of the intrusive, where there is also a higher than average concentration of ilmenite. According to Watson,1 the Ti02 content of the Nelsonites of this region ranges from 10 to 42 per cent, while P205 varies from 4 to 15 per cent. It is inexpedient at present to disclose exact metal content of the Piney River ore body; suffice it to say that the average tenor lies well within the extremes noted by Watson. SAMPLING METHODS AND PROCEDURE During a preliminary inspection of the ore body, Longyear engineers surmised that because of its soft, clayey character, drill sampling would yield little core, therefore they made all possible preparations to procure accurate samples of the drill cuttings, or sludge. The first requisite in obtaining representative drill cuttings is to secure their full recovery. AFter a year's continued impact of war, the task of the petroleum-refining industry stands out clearly and looms up in larger aspect. This time it is not, as it was so largely in the first World War, simply a matter of increased quantity—more and more of the same petroleum products that had substantially been standard for years. In this era the emphasis is largely on newer and improved materials which had been produced, if at all, in comparatively insignificant quantities, and for which manufacturing equipment was not available on a large scale. At the beginning of 1942 four great product needs (besides a number of lesser ones) confronted the industry: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for aviation and Army equipment service, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture. The difficulty in presenting a review of engineering progress in petroleum refining during 1942 is that there is so little one is free to say about so much which has been and is being accomplished. At the opening of 1942 the program was to increase the then existing capacity of 50,000 bbl. a day of aviation gasoline to over 150,000 bbl. daily by building new plants at an estimated installation cost of $150,000,000. Later in the year. after the announcement by President Roosevelt of a large increase in the program for war-plane building, additional contracts were made between the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and rehers to raise the capacity to 250,000 bbl. per day. The greatly increased scope of the war activities in all parts of the world, the obligation of the United States as the arsenal of the United Nations, and the greater importance and use of bomber, transport, and cargo planes will undoubtedly bring about plans and installations for a further increase in production of aviation gasoline over the present announced plan. In this connection, Jesse Jones, Reconstruction Finance Corporation Chairman, announced that as of Oct. 31 the R.F.C. had through its subsidiary Defense Plant Corporation entered into contracts for the construction, expansion, or equipping of 28 plants to increase 100-octane aviation gasoline production, but gave no data on 'capacity involved or completion dates. His list did not, of course, include a number of existing plants, and some installations being made by companies who are themselves financing the construction. THIS paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. CAPACITY Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a given time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: TR = TR80KK'K" [I] in which TR, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R50 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific-gravity range-2.5 to 2.7-T should be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppard' has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about I.5: I: 0.6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:0.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for -150 + 200-mesh pyrite to be I.4: I : 0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value I.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciable tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 8o per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass S0 per cent of the product. It is best determined from screen tests.

THE shaft of the Raven. mine, at Butte, Mont., is an incline 1,700 ft. in length and dipping at various angles. At the top the dip is 70° from the horizontal, but this is gradually flattened until at the 300-ft. level the inclination is only 47°. This angle continues to the 1,100-ft. level, below which it, curves with a 125-ft. radius to 78°. In addition to these variations in dip, the shaft does not lie in the same vertical plane, with the result that the hoisting rope not only rubs at intervals on both the hanging- and foot-walls, but presses strongly against the west, dividers near the collar, while 300 ft. below it runs close to the east end plates. The early operators used no idlers, and wall plates cut 6 in. deep y the rope resulted. Later operators first attempted to overcome the excessive friction, and the wear of rope and wall plates, by introducing solid cast-iron idlers, 3 in. in diameter. To allow for the travel of the rope from side to side some of these had to be 3 ft. long and were very heavy. Judging from the appearance of the old idlers of this type found at the mine, they often failed to turn in the bearings, which is not surprising when it is considered that they would have to make 1,000 rev.. a minute under ordinary hoisting conditions. The next rolls were made of wood, 6 in. in diameter, with an iron band about each end, and a pintle of 1-in. round steel driven in at the ends to serve as a shaft. These wore rapidly, and were soon replaced by rolls made from water pipe, 5 or 6 in. in diameter, cut to the desired length and fitted with a wooden cylinder into which the pintle was driven. Where the idlers were used on the hanging-wall of the shaft the original bearing was simply a piece of 2 by 1-1 in. strap iron, 10 in. long, turned up at the end in a circle of 18 in. in diameter to receive the shaft. A small hole served for oiling, and common black oil was generally used, although filtered oil from engine bearings and compressor bearings was also used. When the rolls were to be placed on the foot-wall the bearings were made from two pieces of 1 by 3 in. steel, 6 in. long. A half circle was cut on the flat side of each piece and the two half circles together formed a bearing. Oil holes were provided, and in some cases holes were bored through the two pieces so that they could be screwed or spiked to the wall plates.

THE great development of the mines and metallurgical works of this country during the last few years, accompanied as it has been by the investment of enormous sums of money in purchasing lands, and in the erection of improvements, requires that advantage should be taken of the accumulated knowledge of engineers, superintendents, and' others, in mastering &he problems which are constantly presenting themselves for our action. Among those may be mentioned the consideration of more economical systems of mining in our coal and metal-liferous mines, improved methods of transportation above and below ground, unwatering and ventilating mines, the mechanical preparation of coal and other minerals, the various metallurgical processes, and, in fact, every question tending to the attainment of two great objects : 1st. The more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. 2d. The greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries. In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries, and this object has been accomplished, mainly, through the medium of institutes, associations or societies, composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the periodical publication of essays or papers, communicated to such societies by their members. I t must be evident to all practical men that the interchange of the varied experience of those engaged in such occupation in this country could not fail to advance very materially the desired objects; it is, therefore, proposed to establish an American Institute of Mining Engineers, which will hold its meetings periodically in the great mining and metallurgical centers, where works of interest, such as mines, machine shops, furnaces, and other metallurgical works, can be inspected, and the members exchange their views, and consult for mutual advantage upon the difficulties encountered by each; these transactions or proceedings, when published, would form a most valuable and greatly-needed addition to our professional literature. I t is proposed that a meeting of those sympathizing with the object above mentioned shall be called for the purpose of organizing such an association, the place and time of meeting being Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the month of April or May. Communications indicating the opinion and wishes of all, both as to these points, and also as to the organization and objects of the Institute, will be gladly received by any of the undersigned, and a notice of the date of meeting, which will be arranged to suit the greater number, will be duly communicated. Official daily output of the Reconcavo (Bahia) oil fields, which amounted to 300 bbl., increased by the end of 1944 to 500 bbl. The new productive wells are in the district of Candeias. This figure is expected to further increase during 1945. The Itatig Company, which had drilled five wildcats in the state of Sergipe, stopped in 1944, but intends to resume work during the current year, or as soon as the war is over, in order to try the Cretaceous areas around its salt deposits. Several concessions applied for in the states of Sao Paulo, Parana arid Santa Catarina were favorably considered by the Conselho Nacional de Yetroleo, which is interested in fostering prospecting activities in the country. Several national groups are interested in exploring the federal gas field of Aratu (Bahia), a proposal having been made to use the gas in the manufacture of Portland cement. Undoubtedly the most important fact in the 1944 activities was the visit by two outstanding petroleum geologists, who had the opportunity to examine some of the principal areas and reported their opinions to the Brazilian Government. By special courtesy of the U. S. Government, Mr. E. DeGolyer spent a few weeks inspecting the gas and oil fields of the so-called "Reconcavo" of Bahia (a large tract surrounding All Saints Bay, on whose shore lies the city of Salvador) Later he exchanged ideas with Colonel Joao Carlos Barreto, President of the Conselho Nacional de Petrolco, as to the most adequate measures to develop production. Considering the oil problem in the southern part of Brazil, in the sedimentary belt including formations from the Devonian to the Triajsic, Mr. DeGolyer suggested a visit there by Mr. Lemis MacNaughton. The latter traveled during the months of June, July and August, accompanied by Brazilian geologists Avelino de Oliveira, Vice-president of the Conselho Nacionial de Pctroleo, Pedro Moura, Annibal Bastos, Burdot Dutra and J. Felicissimo, and verified the actual possibilities of the region, thus confirming the opinion of Pedro Moura, Avelino de Oliveira and Froes Abreu as to the advisability of thoroughly prospecting the south of Brazil. It is to be hoped that on the recommendation of these proficient American experts the Brazilian Government will take the necessary measurcs to carry out a complete search 01 such areas, which hitherto have been unsuccessfully drilled because knowledge of the structure was not adequate. The old Government policy of monopolistic essence has now given way to the more enlightened tendency of reconciling official action with private enterprise, which should in no way be curbed but rather encouraged. Such trend is heartily welcomed by financiers and technicians alike, who realize how indispensable is the cooperation of private capital, both national and foreign, in

The Gooseberry Mine is located 38 krn (24 miles) by road east of Reno, 13 km (8 miles) south of Interstate 80. The mine was originally discovered in 1906 and remained in the control of the Martin family of Fresno, who worked the-property with Mexican ranch hands for 68 years. Westcoast took over the property in 1976 from Apco Oil Corporation. During the time the Martins operated the mine, a 305 m (1,000 ft) inclined shaft was sunk with drifts developed on eight levels exceeding a total of 3,000 m (9,000 ft) in length. It is interesting to note that for over one -half century all development ore was stockpiled. West- coast, the United States mining subsidiary of Home Oil Company Ltd., Calgary, Alberta, completed sinking another vertical shaft to the 396 m (1,300 ft) level. Development work between 122 m and 305 m (400 ft and 1,000 ft) levels has proved the existence of a fine ore body over 300 m (1,000 ft) long. The silver-gold ore grade is fairly consistent in the vertical section, but copper, lead and zinc may show slight increases with depth. Average width of the ore bearing portion of the vein is 2.5 m (8.3 ft). Stoping is by cut-and-fill method. Average silver values within the ore zone have increased from the 152 m (500 ft) level to the 305 m (1,000 ft) level, although the gold values do show some decrease. It is not possible for the geological staff to predict the depth of the ore. However, several years of ore reserves have been proved in the existing mining areas. Important ore minerals are argentite, native gold, and electrum. Trace amounts of galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite are associated with the precious metal mineralization. The vein is mainly composed of calcite and quartz. Mine-run underground ore is dumped from the hoisting skip into a coarse ore bin followed by a jaw crusher, an impact crusher, and a 600 mt (650 st) fine ore bin. The mill has a capacity of 317 mt per day (350 st per day). Two-stage grinding is done by a rod mill followed by cyclones with the underflow sent to a ball mill in closed circuit with the cyclones. Cyclone overflow after conditioning receives a primary float in four 1.7 cu m (30 cu ft) cells and a second stage of conditioning ahead of 24 0.8 cu m (30 cu ft) secondary flotation cells. No cleaning stages are used. Flotation tailings are cycloned for a sand-slime separation with the sands used as underground stope fill and the slime portion to tailing dam storage.

SOME ten years ago the writer1 made a survey of college catalogues to determine what sort of training geologists were receiving in basic sciences. In the light of this compilation and subsequent experience, he made the statement at the 1939 meeting of the Institute that apparently only in schools offering a curriculum in geological engineering or in the geological option of mining engineering curricula could geologists hope to receive the training advocated by Hubbert.2 In the former study, schools of engineering were excluded because the preparation was known beforehand. The present study aims to consider engineering schools in an effort to determine not only what basic studies are required but what use is made of them in geological courses of the third and fourth years. The present study combined the method of consulting catalogues with a questionnaire. Letters were mailed to officials responsible for supervision of mineral industries curricula requesting information on: (I) the extent to which the engineering preparation of the first two years is actually used in the work of the last two; (2) the extent to which the engineering of the last two years is used in courses in geological engineering or geology; and (3) whether geologists or geological engineers teach descriptively or analytically. Both methods of securing information are open to criticism; the former on the basis of the incomplete information supplied by university catalogues concerning prerequisites and curricula and the latter on the ground that the questions may be phrased poorly or given insufficient consideration by replying officials. Fifty-six questionnaires were mailed and 39 (70 per cent) replies were received. Of the replies, 6 (11.3 per cent) were from colleges of liberal arts unconnected with engineering schools, 11 (20 per cent) were from schools having curricula in geological engineering and 22 (39 per cent) were from departments of mining engineering. The number of replies and their distribution were satisfactory in spite of the receipt of only six from liberal arts colleges. It should be understood that the universities of which the catalogues were examined were not necessarily the same in both compilations. No departments that are admittedly or known to be acting solely as service departments were recorded in the second study. Table I shows that all professional schools require mathematics through calculus, whereas only 7 per cent of the liberal arts curricula expect the same level of preparation; only 73 per cent require trigonometry and 40 per cent college algebra. The proportion of geological engineering curricula requiring differential equations is higher than mining. All of the engineering schools require general and analytical chemistry, whereas only 77 per cent of liberal arts curricula require general and 18 per cent analytical. Recently Chang determined heat content values of tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide from 325" to985°Kand 326" to 912"K, respectively, and, using other published data, made certain solid-state calculations for these two compounds. Chang expressed his Cp values in units of cal per "g-atom alloy" OK. We consider this poor usage since l) tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide are not alloys, and 2) an atom of an alloy does not exist. However, one may convert his values to units of cal per mole OK by merely doubling them. For TaC he calculated a Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 9.07 x lo-' "g-atom per cal". We have refined the calculation of this parameter and have arrived at a much lower value. Rather than approximating the true coefficient of volume expansion, a,, as three times the true coefficient of linear expansion, a, we calculated u, from the TaCo.99, lattice expansion data of Fries and Wahman.38 At 25°C a, = 14.3 x 10s per OC. The molar volume was calculated to be 13.32 cu cm per mole at 25°C. From the lattice compression data of Champion and Drickamer~' for "TaC,.,," we determined the room-temperature compressibility to be 3.5 x 10-l3 sq cm per dyne by plotting l/Vo (aV/ap) vs applied pressure. (Since the lowest pressure at which Champion and Drickamer reported a relative volume was 20 kbars, one may calculate an approximate compressibility only. Chang calculated a compressibility of 3.175 x 10-l3 sq cm per dyne from the same data.) We also used twice Chang's value of Cp = 4.38 cal per "g-atom alloy" OK for the molar heat capacity at 25°C. From these four values we calculated a Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 5.8 x 10-l4 mole per erg or 2.4 x lo- ' mole per cal, and a Cdil value of 2.3 x 10' ergs per mole OK. In the case of tungsten monocarbide no isothermal compressibility has been reported; however, one may calculate an approximate Nernst-Lindemann parameter by using the adiabatic compressibility reported by Brown, Armstrong, and Kempter." Using the WC lattice expansion data of Mauer and Bolz~l we calculated a, to be 12., x l0-' per OC. The molar volume was calculated to be 12.5 cu cm per mole. We used twice Chang's value of Cp = 4.18 cal per "g-atom alloy" OK for the molar heat capacity at 25°C.
