The four papers making up this symposum have been prepared especially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathematical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismograph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspests of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. The first production on the Island of Trinidad was discovered 29 years ago; 13,275 acres were proved for oil and gas to the end of 1937, and 145,076,700 bbl. was produced from 2661 wells, or 10,928 bbl per acre. The production of oil in 1936 was 13,237,030 bbl. and in 1937 a new peak of 15,498,350 bbl. was reached. During November 1937, the daily average production was 43,350 bbl., or 35 bbl. per well, while the maximum gas production was 45 million cubic feet daily. Two hundred fifty wells were completed during 1937 and 15 abandoned. At the end of last year, 800 wells had been temporarily shut down, 1235 were producing oil and gas, and 2 were producing gas only. Six hundred seventy-nine dry wells had been drilled to the end of 1937. At the end of November 1937, the following oil-producing methods were in use: 395 wells flowing, 491 pumping, 97 on air-gas lift and 252 wells miscellaneous. There were no flooding operations. The oil is produced from the Miocene and Eocene and is of both asphalt and paraffin base. The gas produced averaged approximately 1050 B.t.u. per cu. ft. with 0.8 gal. of gasoline per 1000 cubic feet.

Much criticism has been directed at the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 from many sources, but few specific charges have been leveled, at least publicly. Yet, if the criticism is truly valid and can ever hope to become constructive, the issues must be approached head on. Therefore, the authors consider this an initial article and invite responses from others for contributions in subsequent issues. Dialogue is today's popular term and perhaps many of the problems associated with the implementation of the Act are the lack of communication between interested parties. There are two criticisms generally made concerning the philosophical approaches taken in the Act. The first is that there is an over-kill in some of the legislation, some provisions are not justified based on past accident history and economic considerations. Generally speaking in this category, no order of priority was considered consistent with safety and economy. The second category includes those situations where new provisions were imposed to improve safety in one area without adequately considering the consequences in another area, let alone the economics of the situation. While the authors do not always agree with the placement of items in these two categories by some industrial representatives, they will give specific examples that they believe may have a certain degree of validity.

The Sixty-fifth Congress was a "War Congress." Perhaps nothing else than war work should have been expected of it, but it had time and opportunity to do much more. Engineers have good reason for sorrow over the engineering legislation that died merely because there was no opportunity for a vote. The mineral resources of the public lands of the United States are, except the precious metals, locked away from development. For more than eight years there has been an attempt by both the executive and legislative departments of the nation to secure legislation which, under proper conditions and without detriment to the public interest, will open up these lands for development. After eight years of study, argument, conciliation, and compromise, Congress agreed in conference of the two Houses upon a measure satisfactory to it and to the Executive Department and the final draft was passed by the House of Representatives, but in the Senate it was talked to death by Senator LaFollette of Wisconsin. Some of its proponents plan to, reintroduce the bill identically as agreed to in conference into the 66th Congress, where it is hoped that by reason of its peculiar fate in the 65th Congress it will be regarded in the nature of unfinished business and thus receive early consideration and passage.

There have been no major field developments during 1935. Operations have proceeded normally on the company's three producing fields, Masjid-i-Sulaiman, Haft Kel and Naft-i-Shah. The refinery at Kermanshah was commissioned in September, 1935, with a rated throughput capacity of 75,000 tons a year of topped crude to meet local requirements. Crude production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields is tabulated below: Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—The flowing lives of wells have been extended by (I) a process of acid treatment, thereby reducing the bottom-hole pressure differentials, and (2) by reducing the back-pressure. Optimum producing conditions for individual wells have been determined as a result of an experimental study of the amount of available energy in the reservoir crude and of energy losses in flowing wells. The return of surplus products to the reservoir has continued to be a satisfactory economic operation and the crude throughput capacity of the topping plant has been increased. The viscosity of residue returned to the reservoir is reduced before injection by regassing at 35 lb. per sq. in. absorption pressure with surplus gas. The pressure in the gas dome is falling at the low rate of one pound per annum. Haft Kel Field.—The delimitation of the main structure has proceeded; the oil-bearing area so far proved being about 50 square miles.

IT is impossible to mention by name all the men and organizations that contributed to this volume. The original manuscripts of the chapters contained acknowledgments of various lengths, but space limitations make it impossible to print them. Suffice it to say that virtually everyone active in coal preparation in the United States contributed directly or indirectly to the contents of the volume. THE Mahoning Valley coal region lies on the extreme northern outcrop of the Ohio coal-field, and all the mines, with one exception, are opened on the lower coal of the series, No. 1 of the Ohio Geological Survey. The coal ranges from an inch to five, six, and sometimes seven feet thickness, the workable height being between two and a half and six feet. There are two varieties of coal, known in market as "Briar Hill coal " and " Mineral Ridge coal;" both varieties are drawn from the same seam. The Briar Hill coal is generally called block coal, and is the kind so largely used in a raw state in smelting iron. It pos¬sesses a laminated structure, easily splitting into horizontal sheets, but is very difficult to break in the opposite direction. The faces of the layers are often covered with a soft, dead, carbonaceous material, like charcoal, and the whole seam throughout is marked by alternate layers of dead and bright-looking coal. In the act of combustion the coal neither swells nor changes form, the masses retaining their shapes until they fall to ashes in the furnace. The Mineral Ridge variety is much softer, and is also shorter in the grain than the Briar Hill. kind, and it contains a good deal of

A NEW method of treating steel by ammonia has recently been intro¬duced into the metallurgical industry, by means of which piston cylinders of internal combustion engines, shafts and other similar steel products can be made more resistant to wear than formerly. In 1929 the writer' published the historical notes and some experiments upon nitrification. He believes that the corrosion of nitrified steel is a matter of importance and worth studying; and as there have been few studies thereof, he has conducted experiments in this respect. L. Guillet,2 in 1927, reported corrosion tests made on nitrified and cemented steels with acid and salt solutions. In 1928, 0. Hengstenberg3 reported the high resistance of nitrified steel to water vapor and air. V. 0. Homerberg4 stated that nitrified steel has high resistance to water, air and salt solution; and G. Hagg5 studied nitrified layers of iron by means of the X-ray. Though F. Hanaman6 in 1913, measured the single potential difference of steel treated with ammonia at above 650° C., no one, it seems, has ever measured the single potential difference of the so-called nitrified steels having extraordinary hardness. The writer measured the single potential differences of nitrified special steels in various solutions with the object of studying the corrosion problem and, if possible, of knowing whether any new physical property would be caused by nitrification.

Meeting of Oct. 23, 1914.-It was voted to take no action concerning the proposed amendments to Article VIII, Sections 2 and 3, but that they be sent to the membership, as provided by the Constitution, together with a statement of the arguments for and against the proposed changes. It was voted that the following proposed amendment, which had been unanimously approved at the annual meeting of the Institute on Feb. 18, 1914, be sent to the membership as provided by the Constitution, together with the approval of the Board of Directors of this change: Article III, Section 1, paragraph 3, sentences 2 and 3: substitute the following: "Any Member, Junior Member or Associate in arrears for two years shall be dropped from the rolls unless the time for payment is extended by the Directors. A Member so dropped may be reinstated by the Directors on paying the arrears of clues and other indebtedness with which he was charged on the books of the Institute it the time he was dropped. A Member or Associate thus reinstated shall receive the Transactions for the back year for which he pays." It was unanimously voted to extend the sincere thanks of the institute to Samuel A. Taylor, Chairman, and to each member of the several Committees of the Pittsburgh meeting, for the enjoyable and successful meeting which they brought about.

WILLIAMS, San Francisco, Cal.-Is the Union Avila plant run as a topping plant or as a dehydrating plant? A. F. L. BELL, San Francisco, Cal.-Both. It takes off an average of 20 per cent. water besides topping the oil. Part of the crude oil is run through an electrical separator before running to the topping plant, but the entire crude averages about 20 per cent. when it enters the topping plant. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-I suppose most of the work contemplated in these large topping plants is simply to deal with topping the oils with only a small percentage of water in them. A. F. L. BELL.-Not more than 2 per cent. of water can be handled in ordinary stills without causing trouble. At our Gavotte refinery, where the oil runs from 15 to 30 per cent. water, we carry 20 lb., pressure oil our stills to hold the framing down, we can do that with small stills, with large one's it would not be safe; but with a retort, the quantity of water contained in the oil does not affect its working. It simply means additional fuel to evaporate the water.

(written discussion*).-In Mr. Burke Baker's description of the process of the American Briquet Co., he speaks only of the attractive features, but every process which uses a compound or emulsified binder has certain undesirable features which must be considered. In making an emulsion, the success of which depends upon the introduction of the various ingredients at certain fixed temperatures and the complete intermixing of a soluble solution with an oil which has absolutely no affinity for it, considerable difficulty is found in keeping the various factors in strict accordance with the formula. To serve its purpose properly or, in other words, to be right for easy mixing with the coal, it should be of a certain predetermined density. Among the controlling factors of this ate the proportion of moisture contained and the temperature of the oil when introduced. If the latter is higher than intended, a greater proportion of moisture will be evaporated than is proper, and if the oil is not sufficiently hot the process of emulsification is retarded. These various factors can be controlled with more or less certainty where working in a laboratory or in a small experimental way, but when it is attempted on a large commercial scale, certain obstacles not otherwise apparent are likely to be encountered.

In light of the present energy crisis, coal appears now as the only reliable source of energy. The production of coal is expected to regain a rising trend after the latest slump. Aside from the competitive price with natural gas and oil, the other retarder of coal production is its environmental pollution effect. Gasification of coal has been advanced as the partial solution to the energy-ecology crisis. All the Advantages In situ gasification of coal may be considered a further step in this direction. It carries all the advantages of normal coal gasification as a stable source of energy; it is clean to handle and nonpolluting of the environment. It partially and sometimes fully does away with mining, makes uneconomical low grade coal and lignites economical and places some formerly unworkable seams within the scope of modern technology. The seams posing problems for mining due to tectonic disturbances may be converted into gas in situ. Low grade coals, such as lignites, which otherwise would be left in nature as uneconomic wealth, may be exploited by underground or in situ gasification. Thus, in situ gasification is likely to increase the exploitable reserves of coal and may reduce the cost of production. An additional merit of this method is that coal substance never reaches the surface and there is no problem of cinder disposal.

CLEVENGER, Palo Alto, Cal.-Since the precipitation of extremely dilute solutions as regards cyanide presents one of the greatest problems of zinc-dust precipitation, I should like to ask Mr. Clark the minimum concentration in cyanide of the solution from which it is possible to precipitate satisfactorily the gold with zinc dust in Homestake practice. A. J. CLARK.-For a day's work about 0.015 per cent. That is precipitating a very low-grade solution, very low in alkalinity. It requires probably 0.2 lb. of zinc dust to the ton. JOHN A. FULTON, Melones, Cal.-At the Melones mine, we have been working very low-grade rock for a number of years, the process being amalgamation and concentration up to the last year. The value of the ore increased so that we had to supplement the concentration with a sand and slime plant. Classification was a problem, since to install classifiers would mean tearing the mill all to pieces. We are therefore making use of a Wilfley table for this purpose. Griffith in an investigation of the Scranton mine cave problem several years ago; in the course of which we investigated rather carefully the bearing strength of various materials that might be utilized for, the support of over We found that there were no reliable data as to the resisting strength, for instance, of gob pillars or timber cogs or cribs, nor as to the amount of compression that might be expected under a given burden. We made a series of tests at the Fritz engineering laboratory of Lehigh University, from which we, reduced certain conclusions, subject, however, to further test before they could be definitely recommended. Onr study of the subject was later checked by a commission appointed by the Governor of the State of Pennsylvania, to investigate the same subject the subsidence of the surface, and the danger entailed thereby. The State, commission made a series of tests on a much more ambitious scale at Pittsburgh, in the laboratory of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and their tests agreed quite closely with those that Mr. Griffith and I had made.
