Thermal-expansion data for, tungsten, rhenium, tantalum, .molybdenum, niobium, W-25 pct Re, Ta-10 pct W, ant1 Mo-50 pct Re are presented covering the range from room tempature to 2500°C. In these measureMents, made in a resistively heated tungsten tube furnace operating in a helium atmosphere, data for rod and sheet specimens were found to be identical; in addition, arc-cast and sintered tungsten were found to yield essentially identical results. Optical rneasurenlents of thermal expansion .made in any atmosphere other- than vacuum are subject to a refraction error which can be quite substantial. Specimens tested in helium appear shorter than when tested in racuum and hence a special correction factor must be applied to the helium data in order to obtain accurate results. WHILE it is true that linear thermal-expansion data for many of the refractory metals have been measured to very high temperatures, it is also true that except in a few instances the data from various investigators are not in good agreement. This is particularly evident in the case of tantalum and niobium although some tungsten data have been reported which differ by as much as 40 pct from the data of other investigators. Due to the sensitivity of both tantalum and niobium with respect to impurity absorption during exposure to high temperatures, it is probable that this single factor accounts for the majority of the discrepancies in the thermal-expansion data for these metals. However, this same factor can probably not be employed to explain the existing differences in the tungsten data. In all probability, these are due to errors in the measurement technique, to material composition variations, or to changes which take place in the material during the heating process (e.g., additional densifica-tion resulting from heating a sintered specimen above the original sintering temperature). In view of the discrepancies which exist in the linear expansion data reported for many of the refractory metals, the current study was initiated in an attempt to resolve such differences. Also, no high-temperature linear thermal-expansion data were found to be available for several refractory metals. Providing such data was another objective of the current investigation. MATERIALS In this study test specimens were employed in either rod or sheet form and in several instances both arc-cast and sintered material were employed. Material compositions are presented in Table I. Helium gas was fed to the furnace at a rate of about 0.5 SCFH and no special purification procedures were employed. The growth of nitrogen-austenite during nitriding of large-gvained ferrite between 650" and 800°C has been studied as a functimz oJ time and nitrogen potential of the atmosphere for a variety of alloying elements dissolved in the ferrite. Whereas no preferential grain boundary penetration by aistenite takes place in zone-refined iron, the addition of aboit I zot pct oj' V, Ti, Cr. Si, or A1 produces significant protrusion of austenite down former 0-0 boundaries. This group of elernents also produces ragged y-0 interfaces in the a grains which advance more slozuly than those in zone-refined iron. 1 zut pct of Ni, Co, Mn, or Mo dissolved in ferrite leads to essentially smooth 7-a interfaces, which advance at rates very sinzilar to those in zone-refined iron. The reasons for this effect are not clear. Two possible limiting hypotheses, not necessarily exclusive, are discussed. One involves p.referentia1 grain bozindary diffusion of nitrogen. the other the production of a zone of ferrite, stpersatcirated with respect to nitrogen, from which austenite precipitates helerogeneozisly on the a-a gyain boundaries. In many phase transformations which occur by nu-cleation and diffusion-controlled growth, information on the parameters which control the rates of nuclea-tion and of growth is frequently not quantititative. The present work describes a continuation of efforts to obtain quantitative data on growth rates in systems where thermodynamic and kinetic factors are known independently, and thus where comparison with models of the growth process is possible. The work has been conducted on iron-base systems for two reasons. Firstly, there are several interesting transformations in this system, many of which are of practical importance. Secondly, the information on phase diagrams, activities, and diffusion coefficients is more complete in this system than in any other. These data are still inadequate to check all the effects of alloying elements, but at worst it is possible to make estimates and thus examine order-of-magni-tude agreement with proposed models. It will be necessary to do this in the present work. The problem studied was the growth of nitrogen-austenite in from the surface of large-grained columnar crystals of alloyed ferrite exposed to an NHs/Hz atmosphere. Earlier work by Grozier et al.' had suggested that growth of austenite may occur preferentially along grain boundaries of alloyed ferrite, whereas zone-refined (ZR) iron shows no such effect, Fig. 1. The yield drop that occurs in tantalum, Cu-AZ. and Ag-Al was investigated as a function of strain rate and at several temperatures. From the strain-rate dependence of the yield drop an activation volume was calculated and found to agree with that obtained from differential strain-mte tests. The temperature dependence of the yield drop can he explained in terms of the parameter temperature divided by activation volume. The yield drop is attributed to the rapid multiplication of dislocations during their motion. THE yield-point or yield-drop (upper yield stress minus the lower yield stress) phenomenon has been the subject of numerous investigations1-9 in both bcc and fcc metals. Also, there is no dearth of theoretical explanations10-20 to account for the yield-point phenomenon. The present explanations can be divided into two categories: the concept of dislocation locking and subsequent unlocking and the concept of multiplication of dislocations due to their motion. The Vottrell10,11mechanism of locking and unlocking, as applied to bcc metals, is the best known of the three proposed locking mechanisms. The two additional mechanisms, short-range order (SRO)7,16,17 and Suzuki-type locking,14,15 have been employed to account for the existence of yield points in fcc metals. The experimental evidence supporting the locking of dislocations, especially in bcc metals, is well-established. The dependence of the yield point on interstitial concentrations,' the kinetics of strain aging,2 and the observations by electron-transmission microscopy18 are some of these experimental results. The number of experimental observations supporting dislocation locking in fcc metals is not as extensive as in bcc metals. The unlocking of dislocations, which actually is supposed to account for the yield drop, is by no means well-established by experimental results for either bcc or fcc metals. The similar temperature dependence6 of the yielding and plastic flow is one of the experimental factors that cannot be explained in terms of the unlocking of dislocations. The mechanism based on the rapid multiplication of dislocations has been proposed by several investigators. 18-20 Johnston and Gilman19 have proposed a detailed model of yielding, which was later employed by Hahn21 to predict quantitatively the yield drop in iron. This mechanism was discussed in a previous paper22 and several limitations were pointed out. In the same paper it was shown that an activation volume could be obtained from the strain-rate dependence of the yield drop and that a correlation existed between the activation volumes obtained from the yield-drop tests and from differen-

No. 425, 12,000 words.)—This paper describes a research project undertaken to provide a means of studying the behavior of weighty structures such as mines, dams, foundations, etc., with models of the same material in the laboratory. The paper shows that in general it can be done. The underlying theory is explained, the apparatus which was developed and built to do this is described, and the results of laboratory experiments with sandstone mine structures are given. There is discussion of the accuracy of results with the present equipment, the model size necessary, and of the size and type of equipment necessary for the obtaining of results of practical value in the field. Milling and Concentration Ball Mill Studies, I. By A. W. Fahrenwald and Harold E. Lee. (Tech. Pub. No. 375. 25,000 words.)—This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of some of the numerous elements entering into ball mill grinding. All apparatus used was equipped with ball bearings. Every experiment was accompanied by a power measurement accurate to 0.005 hp. Quartz was used. Each element studied, such as ball load, was varied systematically. Power curves were obtained for the mill for three general sets of conditions; namely, (1) balls only (2) balls and quartz and (3) balls, quartz and water. For each general condition, power curves were obtained for various mill speeds, ball loads and ball sizes. For conditions 2 and 3, feed sizc and weight and pulp dilution also were studied as variables. The mill output, in grams of finished product per unit of time, was obtained for each test. There have been many attempts to prove that platinum was known to the ancients, but since no traces of the metal have been found in the relics of early times, it must be concluded that it was not known to them. As far as records go, it was actually first discovered in the 16th century in a Spanish mine on the Pinto River in South America; from which source it received its name of Platina del Pinto (little silver from the Pinto). It was more or less of a rarity and was a subject of interest to a few chemists only, until the year 1822 when the metal was first discovered in Russia. In 1819 there were noticed in the washings of the gold sands of the southern part of the Ural Mountains, grains of a heavy white substance, but it was not until three years later that this substance was found to contain platinum. While at first the amounts of platinum brought from the Urals were meager, prospecting soon disclosed rich deposits extending over a considerable area, and nuggets from 10 to 20 lb. were by no means rare. This discovery assured to chemists an ample supply of platinum for their crucibles, etc. The ore is now found in various parts of the world but the richest deposits are still found in the Ural Mountains. The platinum of commerce is obtained entirely from alluvial deposits at depths varying from 6 to 40 ft. The sand and gravel of former river beds are subjected to a series of screenings and washings to effect the separation of the ore. Actually, probably all gold-bearing gravel beds of the world contain platinum, and it is more than likely that large quantities of platinum ore have been thrown away with the black sand washings from gold placer deposits. This is especially true of the alluvial deposits of the Pacific Coast in California and Oregon. Platinum ore is usually found in the form of rounded or flattened grains of "sand," and occasionally in irregular lumps of the size of peas. Large nuggets are very rare. The ore has a metallic luster and is distinguished by its steel gray color, but shows light gray streak when rubbed on a hard white surface; it has a high specific gravity, 16 to 19; is infusible in the hottest blast furnaces, and insoluble in any single acid. INTRODUCTION The King and Beaver mines of Asbestos Corporation Limited (ACL) were joined in 1957 to form the King-Beaver mine. In 1964, ACL purchased the Johnson's Asbestos Company. The combined underground workings are a part of the King- Beaver mine. Asbestos ore is mined at the rate of 4080 metric tons per day (mtpd) to provide 15% of the company's daily requirement in the Thetford Mines area. Figure 1 shows the location of Thetford Mines. Two shafts service the underground. No. 3 shaft, 457 m deep, is used for personnel and material transportation, downcast ventilation, and ore hoisting. No. 4 shaft, 820 m to the south, is 389 m deep. It is used for material transportation and upcast ventilation. Figure 2 shows the relative locations of the shafts and the underground workings. The ore is mined by block caving. HISTORY The orebody outcropped at surface and was first mined as an open pit. Underground mining commenced when open pit mining became impractical. Shrinkage stoping, used initially, was unsatisfactory in the highly fractured ore. Sublevel stoping improved ore recovery and safety, but did not overcome the adverse effects of the un- stable rock. Observations of the rock failures indicated that block caving would be satisfactory. This was confirmed by careful investigation and testing. A method of block caving similar to that used at the Miami Copper Company was adopted. The first block commenced production in June 1933. BLOCK CAVING General A large block of ore is undercut above pre- pared drawpoints. The ore above the undercut caves by its own weight. Caving progresses up- ward as the caved ore is drawn. A large proportion of the rock breaks up in the caving action so that it will pass through the drawpoints. Oversize blocks are broken by drilling and blasting or mudcapping. Figure 3 shows the progressive stages of block caving. In the central part of the ore zone, the vertical dimension of a block is determined by the 132 metres between production levels. When isolated ore pockets are developed, the vertical dimensions of a block depend on the extension of the ore zone above the undercut. The minimum horizontal dimension of an under- cut determines the cavability of the overlying block. When necessary, caving is assisted by drilling long horizontal holes into the block above the undercut and blasting them. This procedure speeds up or restarts caving. It will not ensure complete caving of blocks having undercuts less than 30 m wide. Orebodies suitable for block caving are highly fractured and wide enough to cave freely without excessive dilution. One of the most common basic open-hearth furnace products is a simple carbon steel with a carbon range from 0.05 to 0.15 per cent. The material is widely used for sheets, tubes, bars, wire and the innumerable special objects of secondary fabrication. The properties of the material vary over wide ranges, depending on the more exact composition and details of manufacture or treatment that affect its structure. The present paper is a review of those properties and structures that have been found by studying this steel as used in the cap screw industry. At first glance this might be thought a narrow application of the steel, but, since the industry uses the material in the cold-worked, annealed and heat-treated conditions, the title of the paper may be excused for its comprehensiveness. Yet, in studying the wide ranges of properties and structures that preclude a more specific title, there can be no suggestion of completeness or finality. Even a summary of a few years' work is no more than a preliminary survey of a field that will be fertile in scientific data and industrial products for many years to come. An outline of the structures will be given first, then a list of the previous contributions that are at hand and finally some details of the work and related problems, especially concerning this low-carbon steel in the surface-hardened condition. Wire Used in Manufacture of Cap Screws The wire that is used for making cold-upset and roll-threaded cap screws has been cold-drawn from hot-rolled rods that were pickled and limed. The common sizes used in the industry range from 0.185 to 0.750 in. dia., the exact diameters depending on the plant practice and having the usual tolerances of 0.002 in. for the smaller sizes and 0.003 in. for the larger sizes. The carbon range, by pit analysis, is usually between 0.07 and 0.12 per cent. Manganese should be within the usual 0.30 to 0.50 per cent. range. Sulfur rarely exceeds 0.045 per cent. and phosphorus seldom exceeds 0.030 per cent. Silicon is usually below 0.03 per cent. but in the silicon-killed steels may be in the customary 0.10 to 0.25 per cent. range. Rimmed steel is not considered most suitable for cap screws that are cold-headed or for parts that are to be surface-hardened.

IN 1947 a large low grade deposit of uranium was located in the northwest corner of Saskatchewan, in the Beaverlodge property of Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Most of the values occur as thin seams and as coatings on other minerals, and the ore, which is light and friable, is not amenable to the usual gravity methods of concentration. The acid leaching process developed to retreat the company's Port Radium tailings was also impractical, as the percentage of carbonates is high and the percentage of sulphides relatively low. Construction of the mill building and installation of equipment, both scheduled for 1952, awaited selection of a satisfactory ore dressing process on or before Oct. 1, 1951. An extensive research program on dressing of ores from the Ace mine therefore was undertaken by the Mines Branch in Ottawa, a research team at the University of British Columbia, and an ore dressing group at the company's Port Hope refinery. Pilot plant operations were conducted at the Ottawa plant of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. under the general direction of C. S. Parsons, consultant on metallurgy and ore dressing for Eldorado. In mid-September, having compared results of the several research programs, Dr. Parsons recommended a process employing a carbonate or basic leach. He reported that, while the chemistry of the process had been proved, engineering of the flowsheet was incomplete, and he suggested that under normal conditions further pilot plant work at the Ace mine might be profitable. However, since this would involve a delay of 12 to 18 months in bringing the property into operation, he recommended that design of the concentrator proceed immediately. Concentrator capacity was determined by two considerations: 1) the amount of ore then available and 2) the expectation that continued improvements would be made in the ore dressing process as a result of the intensive research being carried out by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. The Gulf Coastal plain of the southern United States is that area bordering for a large part, the Gulf of Mexico and extending inland and northward to the main interior highland region. It is more or less V-shaped and includes the States of Florida, extreme southern Alabama, all .of Mississippi and Louisiana, the eastern and southern half of Arkansas, and the eastern, southeastern, and southern portions of Texas. While the contents of this paper apply to. the Gulf Coastal plain in general, they are intended to refer more specifically to that portion of the plain included between the 90th and 97th meridians, and the 29th and 33d parallels, an area that may be described geographically as comprising western Mississippi, all of Louisiana, part of eastern and all of south-eastern Texas. It is within this area that numerous and prolific oil pools have been developed during the last 17 years.

THE value to the engineering profession of a liaison between the engineering societies of Russia and America, through Engineering Council, was the subject of a meeting in the Engineering Societies Building attended by over 500 persons. In introducing the subject, Mr. N. A. Stephanoff, President of the Russian Society of America, said: In Russia, engineers were divided into two classes: those who had graduated from the high technical schools and the practical engineers who had graduated from special technical schools. These technical schools were divided into three groups: The first corresponded to the German polytechnical schools with many departments, mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, mining, etc. The second group corresponded to the French special schools of the "Écoles des Ponts et Chaussées." "École des Mines." The third group was formed by the Military and Naval Academies of Engineers. In 1910, Russia's high technical schools had about 45,000 students, whose training covered a period of not less than five years, and who enjoyed all opportunities afforded by laboratories in no way inferior to those of Germany.

THE Rio de Canada Honda placer property is situated at an altitude of 5500 ft. above sea level in the San Luis Mountains of the Province of San Luis, Argentina. The mine is reached by 70 km. of fair truck road, from the nearest railway station on the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires al Pacifico. The Pan-American airport at Villa Mercedes, 1.40 km. distant, serves as the most convenient point for shipment of gold. Placer mining in the Rio de Canada Honda dates from the time of the Incas and the present native population depends on the gold washed from this river and the adjacent arroyos as a means of livelihood as did the many generations before them. They dig pits to bedrock where they are not driven out by water, and mine the bedrock gravel by means of tunnels and caves. No timber is available and the ground is supported by rock cribs carefully built with the boulders encountered; or with angular blocks of slate rock taken from quarries on the surface.

The big mass of anorthosite in the Lake Sanford district and the bodies of titaniferous magnetite that occur in a small area near the south margin of the mass have been described repeatedly, and the puzzling problems of the genesis of the rocks and ores have stimulated the deductive reasoning of geologists for a hundred years. Some of these men have taken a leading part in describing the anorthosite rock and forming hypotheses concerning its origin; some have contributed most to the study of the ore deposits; and some have made classical Studies introducing a basic approach to the problems of the anorthosite rock and genesis of the titaniferous magnetites. Much of the writing on the problems of rock and ore genesis has been based on physical-chemical reasoning rather than on field and microscope observations of the rocks and ores. Most of these geologists conclude that the anorthosite was formed by true magmatic crystallization, involving previous settling or squeezing out of ferromagnesian minerals from the parent magma. The associated gabbro is a separate segregation or later intrusion, and the lighter colored and finer grained facies of the anorthosite is either a chilled border zone of the anorthosite or the result of granulation by crushing of the coarse, dark blue rock of the main mass. This blue rock, called the Marcy type, is named after the highest peak in the range. The finer grained and lighter colored rock is called the Whiteface, after another mountain appropriately named for a cliff colored by this facies of the anorthosite.

(communication to the Secretary): It has always appeared to me that each coalseam has its peculiar character or habit, due to the conditions of its formation, by virtue of which it is either persistent or variable in its section over extended areas. One seam will hold its thickness, chemical character, number and position of partings, beds of slate, etc., over a large area, while another will be found to vary in some of these characteristics every few feet. As the position of the outcrop is an accident of the topography, depending on folding and erosion which have taken place since the bed was formed, no one opening in the outcrop, or, in fact, anywhere else, can supply reliable evidence as to the general character of the seam. To determine the character of an untried seam, a number of sections are necessary from widely separated points, in order to show such variations as may exist. THE luncheon of the Milling Methods Committee in the Engineers' Club, on Feb. 16, was distinctly a social affair, although several matters of a non-milling nature were fruitfully discussed. The session* on Milling Methods, the same afternoon, attracted a gathering which overtaxed the capacity of the Board Room on the fifteenth floor. Galen H. Clevenger presided, with the moral reinforcement of Charles Butters. As all papers were available in printed form, and since synopses have appeared in MINING & METALLURGY, it is unnecessary to cover the contents of each in detail here. The first paper (T. P. 410), by Leaver and Woolf, on the "Flotation of Minor Gold in Large-scale Copper "Concentrators," was excellently summarized by R. S. Dean of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, who stressed the -very definite action of lime as a depressant of gold, and showed how the authors had worked out the best conditions of alkalinity, pH concentration and reagents for -optimum recovery of gold along with base metals, especially where lime had to be used to depress pyrite. No discussion was evoked.

INTRODUCTION The Kidd Creek Mine produces a total of 3.6 million tons annually. Geologically the orebody is complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead which are mined and milled as two separate "ore types". Production is mainly from highly mechanized sub-level open stopes of approximately 300,000 tons each. The Mine Engineering Department has developed, and now operates, a computer system that is the subject of this report. It was created specifically to aid the daily work of the mining engineer and has features that are new and possibly unique in the industry. DESIGN OBJECTIVES In 1971 a task force, set up to investigate the subject of computer assistance to mine engineering, specified four design requirements which it felt a successful application had to satisfy. They were:- 1) The computer had to offer a TOTAL SYSTEM that was fully integrated into the routine mine engineering function. 2) The computer had to be directly usable by the current engineering staff, the majority of which had received no formal training in computing.

The strong upward curve of fluorspar consumption continued through 1968, with domestic producers unable to furnish more than 30% of U.S. requirements. Stocks of all grades were quite short at all points during most of 1968. This resulted in price increases as both domestic and foreign producers sought to cover spiralling labor costs. Further increases are probable for 1969. All Illinois mines were closed by strikes in January and February. The strong trend in metallurgical imports reflects the increased use of fluorspar in steelmaking, as new oxygen process steel plants come into production. The growth of use of all fluorocarbon chemicals continues to require additional acid grade fluorspar, with military uses a major factor. Several new aluminum smelting facilities coming into production are adding to the aluminum fluoride needs, bringing further pressure upon the world supply of acid grade fluorspar. The world-wide consumption pressure on all grades of fluorspar is pushing prices up, and no end to the tight supply is in sight, even assuming that all the new projects cited here are finished on schedule.

BRAZED joints and their strength have for some time been of great practical as well as theoretical interest. A good summary of the previous work in this field may be found in the reports of the Armour Research Foundation. In spite of excessive scatter in test data, the fact that the strength of a brazed joint may exceed the ultimate strength of the brazing material itself by many times continues to be of interest and of value in engineering. That this is qualitatively due to plastic constraint of the brazing material by the faying surfaces of the base metal is not in dispute, yet no complete interpretation of the data exists. The purpose of the present work is not to provide such a new interpretation, but to report new experimental data which we hope may lead to a better understanding of the important variables concerned. It should be remembered that the coefficient of expansion of concrete is nearly that of iron; therefore in constructing flues the design must take account of this important detail. The cracking of flues, mentioned by Mr. Havard as having occurred at a temperature of 100° C. and above, . were possibly caused by neglecting to appreciate the extent of the expansion and contraction of the concrete. Effect of Atmospheric Moisture.-The moisture present in the atmosphere is exceedingly injurious to flues of any material, and those made of concrete are no more susceptible than of brick. My experience with flues of the Monier construction, having walls from 1.5 to 2.5 in. thick plastered upon a net-work of iron rods, was unsatisfactory from the standpoint of dura¬bility.

WHILE fulfilling professional engagements, my travels over this portion of the Transvaal have been quite extensive—always on horseback however, so that anything like a thorough investigation of the ground passed over has been necessarily impossible; still, the more minute examination of certain small areas, coupled with general observations, has enabled me to form some idea as to the prominent geological features of the country as a whole. Anything like a complete or comprehensive description is indeed out of the question, as there are no proper maps of the country and the facilities for observation are limited. A large plateau, called the "High Veldt," stretches from east to west across the Transvaal. It is generally level, or gently rolling, and has an average elevation of 6000 feet above the sea; it is destitute of timber, and in fact greatly resembles the western prairies of North America.
