THE Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic prob-lems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segrega-tion. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute con-centration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, diffusion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions alumimum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segre-gate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

The high-temperatzrre solulion calorimeter has been modified and an extension dynamic analysis of i/s transient behavior has provided an improved basis for interpretation of the experimental data. The partial molar heats of mixing, Him, of aluminum, copper, and silicon in the corresponding binary liquid-iron alloys haz,e been measured directly at 1600°C. The resulls in kcal per g-alom are: THE high-temperature1,2 solution calorimeter was planned and designed to obtain directly the partial molar heat of solution of solute elements in a variety of liquid metals that might serve as solvents. Results obtained in the temperature range of 1000° to 1200°C were described in the two earlier publications. However, a long-term goal in the program has been to obtain measurements at 1600°C of the heats of solution of elements in liquid iron. Hence, subsequent to the work last reported,2 and based on the experience of the first two studies, the calorimeter system has been modified and operated at 1600°C to obtain measurements on the Fe-Si, Fe-A1, and Fe-Cu systems. This paper reports the results of the work. THE MODIFIED SYSTEM It was clear from the earlier results that the most precise measurements can be obtained with the high-temperature solution calorimeter when the solution time is less than approximately 30 sec. This can be achieved only when the bath temperature, Tb, is above the melting (liquidus) temperature of the solute material being dropped. A second point of importance is that the refractories used earlier liberated considerable water so that, although the oxygen potential of the atmosphere in the system was satisfactory for work with nickel and copper, it was too high for work with iron, silicon, and so forth. Third, for work at 1550" to 1650°C, an improved temperature-sensing unit is needed. The modified calorimeter in its latest form is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The refractory brick and the Kanthal-Super heating elements which formed the furnace for heating the solute addition have been replaced by a smaller resistance-heated tube furnace which is insulated with bubble-grain alumina. A more elaborate gas purification system was installed to maintain a satisfactorily low oxygen potential in the atmosphere of the calorinieter chamber and of the solute addition furnace. As was the case in the earlier work, at the beginning of a run the calorimeter chamber is evacuated and then filled with purified argon so that a total pressure slightly in excess of 1 atm is maintained during the run. When either of the furnaces within the enclosure attains a red heat, 6 pct H2 is added to the atmosphere. Throughout the run, gas from the calorimeter is circulated through a de-oxidation system at the rate of approximately 5 standard liters per min; the changeover time for the gas within the calorimeter enclosure is approximately 1 hr. The essential stages of the deoxidation system are: a copper furnace at 600°C, a drying tube of anhydrite, and a titanium furnace at 800°C. The oxygen potential of the gas stream in the purification system can be monitored at several points by a stabilized zirconia oxygen cell. This cell is invaluable in detecting the development of leaks in the container vessel and the gas circulating system. THE slag performs two useful functions in open-hearth steel- making. First, it is the means of disposal of all the impurities, save carbon, which are removed from the charge materials in refining the steel, so it must be suited to receiving and retaining as much as possible of undesirable elements with minimum loss of iron and useful alloying elements. Second, the slag serves as a buffer between the flame and the bath and transfers oxygen to the metal at a measured pace contrasted with the violent and difficultly controlled oxidation of the bessemer process. At the same time, the slag is a thermal insulator that limits the rate at which heat can be delivered to the metal from the flame, and a heavy slag blanket thereby serves as a brake on production rates. It has been said with justification that the secret of good steel- making is to make a good slag and the steel will take care of itself. In a broad sense, the subject of slag control includes not only the adjustment of the composition of the slag but also of its relative weight in terms of percentage of the metal-bath weight. The slag is made up essentially of: (1) oxides formed by oxidation of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and iron in the charge, (2) Si02, MnO, MgO, and other oxides charged as such or introduced incidentally with ores or fluxes or by refractory erosion, and (3) lime charged or fed to the heat to neutralize the "acidic" oxides present (Si02 and P205). Obviously, if practically perfect control were possible over the composition of the charge as well as over the oxidation process during the melting period, both slag weight and composition would be very nearly predetermined; and the control problem would be solved. Unfortunately, only a somewhat imperfect control over these factors is possible, so the operator must begin during the lime boil and continue through the refining period to discover and correct departures from the normal pattern of slag development. INTRODUCTION The principal objective of this chapter is to provide guidance in understanding and making effective use of published financial statements of mining companies. Although financial statements only represent a gathering together of information relevant to an enterprise's financial position and results of operations, they increasingly reflect the complexities of the modern day business environment. In the mining industry, a wide variety of accounting practices have evolved to deal with the unique aspects of the business in the absence of authoritative accounting pronouncements from standard-setting bodies. Given such complexities and divergent practices, financial statements of mining companies are not easily understood and cannot be used effectively as a tool in decision-making without a basic knowledge of fundamental accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles and their application in the mining industry. As such, this chapter is not restricted to a discussion of the accounting for the unique aspects of the mining industry. These aspects are dealt with at length but the text also includes a discussion of general accounting concepts and practices which have wide application in the mining industry. Frequent references are made in the text to international practices and to specific rules and requirements of individual countries. In this respect, the scope is restricted to four major mining environments, Canada, the UK, the US and Australia, all of which have made significant contributions to the development of generally accepted accounting principles. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - ELEMENTS AND CONCEPTS Financial statements were originally a stewardship report to owners to satisfy them that management had given a proper account of the resources with which it had been entrusted. Today, the number of users of financial statements has expanded to include the following groups: - shareholders, present and prospective; - lenders, present and prospective; - financial analysts; - regulatory authorities; - taxing authorities; - labour unions and employees; and - creditors and customers. The expectations of these user groups differ. For example, investors and lenders require information that will indicate the adequacy of their security and the profitability of the enterprise; taxing authorities will be concerned with the concept of income; labour unions and employees will focus on the profitability of the enterprise. Ground Rules for Preparing Financial Statements Responsibility for Financial Statements Financial statements are the representations of management. This may strike the reader as a rather obvious statement. It is important to remember, however, the role of judgment in accounting. Notwithstanding the promulgation of accounting standards in the developed countries, considerable flexibility remains in the selection of accounting practices and methods and in their presentation. Arguably, there is more flexibility in the mining industry as few countries have developed standards to deal with its unique aspects. Accordingly, financial statements are as much a product of management's perspective and philosophy as they are a compliance document.

SINCE their comparatively recent development, the alloys of cadmium with silver and copper or nickel, and of cadmium with nickel alone, have been used somewhat extensively as liners for connecting rod bearings and main bearings of internal-combustion engines. In applications where, owing to high bearing loads and elevated operating temperatures, the life of bearings made from tin-base or lead-base alloys has been undesirably short, cadmium alloys have demonstrated considerable advantage. In applications where, because of deflection of the crankshaft or bearing supports, copper-lead bearing metals have resulted in scored shafts, cadmium alloys have been operated successfully. The somewhat serious drawback to these alloys in bearing service has been that they, in common with copper-lead and certain lead alloys, are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of lubricants containing organic acids. These acids may be fatty acids (such as oleic acid) derived from animal or vegetable oils that sometimes have been compounded with engine lubricants, or they may be compounds of an acid nature developed by the oxidation of some petroleum oils under operating conditions. The result of such acid attack on bearings is illustrated by the photograph, Fig. 1. The petroleum oils that are most readily oxidized to a corrosive condi-tion, and the operating conditions under which such oxidation most readily occurs, are now rather well known among the technical organiza-tions of both the petroleum and automotive industries. While means have been developed for inhibiting petroleum oils against such acid formation, the knowledge that this condition may be encountered has been a factor in restricting the wider use of cadmium alloys as engine bearings. It has appeared, therefore, that their value and use would be enhanced if they could be made corrosion-resistant to a degree compatible with the most severe operating requirements.

EVEN in the choice of his birthplace and parents, Donald B. Gillies indicated clearly the trend of his professional career. He was born on Nov. 4, 1872, at Bruce Mines, in Ontario. His father and mother came from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, to Nova Scotia, moved from there to Canada, and finally settled in the copper country in the northern peninsula of Michigan, where the senior Mr. Gillies followed mining as an occupation. Donald's early education was in the public schools and he graduated from Linden Lake (Mich.) high school in 1890. Following the family interest in mining he entered the Michigan Mining School, now Michigan College of Mining and Technology. There he was the rare student who excelled both in athletics and scholastic work. On the athletic field he was a crack football player and track roan. ANNOUNCEMENT on August 6 of the historic event of dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, was more dramatic even than V-E day, since that had so long been forecast whereas the bomb production had been the best-kept secret of the war, even though at one time more than 100,000 people had been at work in connection with its production, and some two billion dollars had been spent on the project. Mining men had long been aware of an unexplained abnormal interest in uranium production, and suspected that something of the sort was on foot, while metallurgists were aware that various men of their acquaintance were engaged in some top secret research. The first announcement was soon supplemented by other official releases which told more about the research laboratories for theoretical and pilot studies, and the plants in Tennessee and Washington, but none of them made clear what the modus operandi is of these terrific bombs. Inquiry at Colum. bia University, where Dr. Dunning and his associates had succeeded in 1939 in splitting the uranium atom, and where laboratories known only as SAM have been feverishly active since the beginning of the war, was unproductive, since none of those officially connected with the project could give out anything beyond the official releases.

That our American civilization will have extensive postwar problems in such fields as economics, unemployment, and social adjustment is now well understood by all readers of the press and listeners to the radio. But precious little is heard from these sources regarding the impact of the war on education, though education is one of the fields where the effect of the war is going to be felt most-for youth is fighting the war. Unquestionably, serious educational problems will ;rise in the postwar period, challenging the best efforts of our educators. Most acute will be the problems at the college level of education, for it is this age group that will have had its educational process most thoroughly disrupted. The return of these students to our college and university campuses wiI1 bring about a new set of conditions which we might as well try to foresee and begin to prepare for now. To begin with, the average returning college student who has had his education interrupted by war service will certainly be more mature in both years and mental outlook, and possibly married. As a result he will want to finish his college education as quickly as possible. His natural action will be to shop around among the various schools of the country to see where he can get the most credit for work he has done or thinks he has done. It is just possible that what might impolitely be termed "dark - market" schools may arise to cater to his needs. These schools will not think of them- selves in this light, of course, but will be conscious only of a keen sympathy for the veteran student and an urgent desire to help him solve his pressing problems. A considerable number of American colleges are going to be pretty well impoverished before this present war is ended and unless some professional organization takes it upon itself to place this possible situation under supervision and regulation, we may well suffer a serious setback to the

This year, Great Britain is looking back over a century to August 14, 1850, the day when the first "Act for the Inspection of Coal Mines" was passed in that country, an act which signaled the end of over two hundred years of hitherto uncontrolled and dangerous mining practices. It was back in the time of Queen Elizabeth that . thousands of pounds were invested in mining, particularly coal mining in England and Scot- land. By 1640 there were collieries producing 10,000 to 25,000 tons of coal per year. In the seventeenth century the Tyne district coal industry was organized into powerful partnerships, and coal took an even larger part in industry, as a source of power and as fuel for the iron industry. In the early 19th century a "phenomenal, almost devastating expansion" characterized Britain's coal industry, and it was sparked by a 111 pct in- crease in the population of England and Wales in the first half of the century. Coal production for those 50 years increased 470 pct and pig iron production was up 946 pct for the period 1801-51.

An investigation was carried out to determine the effect of Ca-Si additions on the dissolved oxygen content of liquid steel. An apparent equilibrium was reached after holding the melt for some time when the total oxygen content of the melt was identical with the dissolved oxygen. Results of the investigation show that for deoxidation with silicon and manganese the apparent equilibrium is reached after 8 to 12 min and the oxygen content of the melt is in good agreement with values reported in the literature for similar steel compositions. Ca-Si additions decrease the dissolved oxygen content appreciably below that obtained with Si-Mn deoxidation. It is postulated that some calcium dissolved in liquid steel at the time of its vaporization combines with dissolved oxygen to form CaO which then fluxes the manganese silicate, thereby lowering the activity of the deoxidation products. Slow flotation of calcium silicate inclusions is attributed to their slower growth rate. An addition of aluminum (to yield <0.005 pct Alsol) prior to introduction of Ca-Si improves the kinetics of removal of resulting deoxidation products. WITH the introduction of continuous casting of billets and blooms, application of calcium-containing alloys for deoxidation purposes has gained new interest. More so than in conventional ingot casting, the degree of control of the dissolved and total oxygen contents in steel for continuous casting can determine the success or failure of the operation because these affect both surface (pinholes) and internal quality of the billets. Of the available deoxidizers, only silicon has so far found wide application. However, in the typical range of application (0.20/0.30 pct Si), it is too weak a deoxidizer to suppress pinhole frequency to the level desirable for all but the least demanding appli-cations (approximately 10/50 pinholes per sq ft, de-pending on degree of subsequent reduction). On the other hand, Vincent&apos; has shown that it requires ap-proximately 0.007/0.008 pct A1 soluble in the steel to suppress pinhole formation to <10 pinholes per sq ft. In view of the difficulty of consistently maintaining this aluminum level and the associated problem of tundish nozzle constriction2 when aluminum is added to the ladle, steelmakers have searched for other de-oxidation alloys to circumvent the problem. Calcium-containing alloys offer such a possibility. When employed as a partial substitute for silicon, CaSi (30 pct Ca/60 pct Si) additions are reported to yield adequate pinhole contro1.3 Its use simultaneously preserves the "fluidity" of the steel and ensures good castability.4 Oxygen contents as low as 0.007 to 0.014 pct have been obtained with CaSi additions varying between 3 to 8 lb per ton.5-7 Due to the high degree of vaporization of calcium at the temperature of molten steel and the different methods used to introduce it into the liquid, the reported results show considerable scatter and lack of consistency. According to several investiga- deoxidation tors, the flotation characteristics of CaSi products are not as favorable as those found for alumi-num but are similar to those established for silicates with low alumina content.678 Thus, cleanliness ratings were improved when CaSi was replaced by a com-bination of Si + A1 followed by CaMnSi additions.5,9 In view of the lack of a comprehensive description of the deoxidation potential of CaSi alloys, a study was undertaken of the effect of CaSi additions on oxygen content in comparison to Si + Mn and Si + Mn + Al. The alloy chosen for this study contained 63 pct Si, 32 pct Ca, <3 pct Al, and 2.5 pct Fe. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were divided in three groups as shown in Table I. In each group, the CaSi addition was increased successively while maintaining the melt composition constant. The experiments in the third group were designed to determine the effect of prede-oxidation with small amounts of aluminum. Ingot iron, containing 0.02 to 0.03 pct C and 0.03 to 0.05 pct Mn, was melted in a 100-lb magnesia crucible. Pig iron was added to the melt under air in an induction furnace to attain the desired carbon content of 0.05 to 0.15 pct and thereby control the initial oxygen content of the melt between 0.04 and 0.015 pct. After removal of the slag, the furnace was sealed and argon was introduced through an opening in the graphite cover, Fig. 1. When the desired temperature was reached, electrolytic manganese was added to the melt and pin samples were taken (7 mm silica tubing) to establish initial oxygen content. To obtain maximum efficiency, CaSi and metallic silicon were introduced in a sealed steel pipe into the bath. This procedure assured minimum loss of calcium through vaporization as the deoxidants were always released at the bottom of the melt. Samples were taken at regular intervals and quenched in water. Temperature of the bath was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. Portions of the pin sample were used for oxygen analysis; five determinations per sample were made to obtain average oxygen content. Oxygen analyses were made by the inert carrier gas fusion method with frequent cross checks with the vacuum fusion method.

This paper describes the results of a laboratory investigation conducted to obtain data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. Air and fuel requirements, rates of advance, com-bustion temperatures, and coke and fluid distributions are presented. The mechanism of oil recovery by in stiu combustion is discussed. Five crude oils ranging in gravity from 10.9 to 34.2"&apos; API were prodrrced from a semiadiabatic, uncon-.solidnted sand pack by in situ combustion. Experimental conditions were varied over a wide range in order to determine the inter-relation-.ships of process variables. The mini-mum air flux requirement for self-sustained combustion was found to he less than 10 scf/hr-ft&apos;l. The rate of advance of a self-sustained combustion zone was found to be nearly proportional to the air flux at the combustion front. The effects of presrure and injected air flux were studied in a series of experiments using a 21.2" API crude. A minimum air require-ment was observed at an air .flux of 20 scf/hr-ft&apos;. The oil saturation con-sumed as fuel averaged 5.5 per cent of pore volume. The effect of air pressure was, found to be .small for experiments having high combustion eficiencies. This study should promote a better understanding of the problems and mechanisms involved in labora-tory investigations and field applications of the in situ combustion pro-cess. The data presented will be use- ful in the interpretation of results of field tests. When tempered with volu-metric sweep efficiencies, the data can be used in making preliminary economic appraisals of the process as applied to reservoirs containing high porosity unconsolidated media. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this work was to obtain laboratory data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. In situ combustion basically consists of (1) injecting air into a reservoir through selected input wells to create an air sweep through the reservoir, (2) igniting the crude at the injection well, and (3) propagating the combustion front through the reservoir by continued air injection. By this means, oil is swept toward producing wells in the area. The fuel for combustion is supplied by heavy residual material (coke) which has been deposited on the sand grains during distillation and cracking of the crude oil ahead of the combustion front. Recovery of petroleum by a combustion or heat wave process is not a new idea. F. A. Howard was granted a patent in 1923 on a process in which air and a combustible gas were pumped into an injection well and ignited.&apos; Russian engineers reported on field experiments with a crude oil gasification process in 1935&apos;. Other known early field tests include those conducted near Bar-tlesville and Ardmore, Okla., in 1942." More recently completed field tests include an inverted seven-spot by Sinclair Oil Co. in the Delaware-Childers field, Nowata County, Okla.&apos;; a three-well and an inverted five-spot test by Magnolia Petroleum Co. in Jefferson County, Okla."."; and a test by California Research Corp. in the Irvine-Furnace field in Kentucky. The Worthington Corp. has completed a test in cooperation with the Forest Oil Corp. in Clark County, 111.l Several field tests are now in progress. Sinclair has acquired a 600-acre lease in the Humboldt-Chanute field, Allen County, Kans., and is under way with a large-scale operation. Three field tests are under way in California. The General Petroleum Corp. is conducting an inverted five-spot pattern test in the South Bel-ridge field in Kern County under a cooperative agreement with 11 other companies, including Continental Oil Co. California Research Corp. is conducting a four-well pattern test in Midway-Sunset field near Maricopa, and Richfield Oil Corp. is under way with a test in the Ojai field in Ventura County. Although the published information is valuable concerning results of field tests, little laboratory data other than that reported by Kuhn and Koch5 are available to aid in appraising the tests from a technical or economic standpoint. Engineering data needed to evaluate the process include the amount of air required per barrel of oil recovered, minimum injection rates which will support combustion, rates of advance, air required per unit volume of reservoir cleaned, amount of oil recovered, and amount of oil consumed as fuel. The present laboratory investigation was undertaken to provide these data for that portion of the reservoir swept by the combustion zone. Most of the orebodies are within a 50-ft thickness of Cambrian limestone; other Paleozoic limestones and dolomites are locally metamorphosed but only slightly mineralized. PETROLEUM and natural gas are composed principally of the saturated hydrocarbons ranging from methane, the lightest, to nonvolatile liquids and solids containing approximately thirty-five carbon atoms. A technique for locating buried accumulations of these hydrocarbons before drilling obviously requires that some of the hydrocarbons leave the deposit and migrate toward the surface of the earth where they may be detected in their original form. Earliest attempts to link near surface hydrocarbons to petroleum at depth were apparently made by Laubmeyer1 in Germany and by Sokolov2 in Russia. These investigators collected samples of soil air from boreholes one to two meters deep and analyzed them for traces of hydrocarbons. They found that soil air over producing areas is richer in these constituents than is soil air over barren areas.

Among the parameters to be considered in the continuous search for new base-metal deposits, there often is a stratigraphic controlling factor that seems instrumental in the localization of ore. In British Columbia, for instance, the Upper Triassic as well as Lower Jurassic volcanics mixed with sediments are a useful indication in the search for copper while, in some parts of Australia, rhyolite bodies seem to be the favorable indicator, and this always within the geosynclinal environment. In Arizona, this stratigraphic factor becomes highly significant and it will be shown here that a large number of ore deposits are to be located around the flanks of ancient calcareous basins or depressions, preferentially corresponding to a certain optimum thickness as revealed by isopachs. The Martin limestone, of Devonian age, is already known for its basal O&apos;Carroll bed which coincides with mineralization at places, and this is a relatively minor control. However, several limestone basins outlined by isopachs are in reality of greater importance as they localize mining districts. Indeed, most mines are found to coincide with a specific thickness of limestone while occurring simultaneously close to major, regional fracture intersections. The regional fractures in question were interpolated and extrapolated from known, important fault expressions, integrating quite well with the existing geology and further confirmed by minor criteria such as contacts, igneous plugs, axes of elongation of batholiths, dikes, etc. Although elements of subjectivity remain, this grid of fractures can be used quite successfully as a working hypothesis in the search for ore. PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by E. R. PALOWITCH and A. W. DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1974, 43.9% of the 603,406,000 tons (549,099,000 mt) of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 82,280,000 tons (74,875,000 mt) was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 31 % between 1938 and 1974. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density inter- mediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: 1) Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of 2 0.1 sp gr units. 2) Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ± 0.005 sp gr units.

The "run of mine" cannot, as in the case of bituminous coal, be sold. Anthracite, being very compact and practically free from volatile combustible matter, burns only at the surface, and it is, therefore, deemed important to have the lumps as nearly of a uniform size as possible, so that between them a large amount of surface will remain exposed to the action of the air without checking the draught too much, or allowing enough air to pass to cool the coal below the ignition-point, In other words, if the pieces of coal of the size of a chestnut and smaller are mixed with lumps of the size of an egg they fill the air-passages and prevent a free draught. It has long been recognized, therefore, that one of the most important points in preparation is to have a uniform sizing, and also to make as large a number of different sizes as can be produced without too

INTRODUCTION THE aim of this work was the preparation of nickel-steels from elemental metal powders by powder metallurgy techniques. It was known that plain carbon steels could be made from a mixture of iron powder and graphite and that the effect of carbon on iron in powder form was of the same nature as that produced in fusion metallurgy. The problem in making nickel steels from elemental powders consisted therefore in finding out whether sufficient diffusion of the nickel and other incidental metals normally present in such steels could be induced in the solid state to modify the properties of plain carbon steels made from powders and produce the beneficial effect of alloying. The composition selected originally was that of an S.A.E. 2330 steel. Metal powders, in the proportion corresponding to that composition, were mixed with graphite, pressed, and heated at different temperatures for different periods of time, to produce bonding of the metal particles and mutual diffusion of the various elements without melting. Temperatures up to 1325°C and sintering periods as long as 6 hr were first investigated because it was expected that such conditions would produce maximum diffusion with an accompanying improvement in the properties of the alloy. It was found that, although diffusion proceeded to a large extent under the conditions investigated, it would not be complete unless sintering were carried out at a high temperature for much longer than 6 hr. Relatively high temperatures and long sintering times are objectionable from a practical point of view, particularly when a low cost material is to be produced, because they necessitate the use of special, costly equipment. Work could be done to improve the diffusion of iron and nickel by changing conditions other than the sintering temperature and time, i.e., finer primary or alloy powders could be used. However, a marked change in the properties of the steel had been observed even with only partial diffusion. It was thought, therefore, that instead of trying to improve the diffusion, advantage might be taken of its incompleteness to produce a special structure consisting, in the unquenched condition, of a hard constituent, rich in nickel, dispersed in a tough pearlitic matrix. Steels with such a structure, not readily obtainable by fusion, should have desirable mechanical properties. Besides, it should be possible to prepare them from elemental powders under economical conditions. This latter alternative was therefore adopted for the second phase of this work. This report is divided into four parts: 1. General Procedure. 2. Effect of Sintering Temperature. 3. Effect of Varying the Nickel Content. 4. Effect of Alloying Elements. GENERAL PROCEDURE The general technique of cold pressing as used in powder metallurgy was applied.
