In particular, investment in foreign countries - whether these are advanced or developing countries - requires careful consideration. A thorough analysis of all the possible risks must be undertaken, so that realistic decisions can be made. Some of the points to be considered are outlined in this paper.

This paper presents two tentative models of the use of a notional metal in a country like Britian, which have been developed using the System Dynamics modelling method. Computer simulations have been carried out using one of the models. These show the effect on the recycling of the notional metal of a wide range of possible future values of world market price and demand for the metal.

This article describes the evaluation of a new geophysical technique used to map fractures between boreholes: electromagnetic geotomography used in conjunction with salt water tracers. An experiment has been performed in a granitic rock mass. Geotomographic images have been generated and compared with borehole geophysical data: neutron logs, acoustic velocity logs, caliper logs and acoustic televiewer records. Comparisons between the images and the geophysical logs indicate that clusters of fractures were detected but single fractures were not.

Some occurrences of lead-zinc mineralization in Mississippian carbonates of central Nova Scotia are briefly described. The results of geophysical and geochemical prospecting are presented. Because the deposits do not give a positive response to these indirect techniques it is necessary to site exploratory drilling through the development of geological concepts.

This note describes a simple, rapid technique for measuring the apparent volume and density of individual bits of porous materials such as iron ore pellets or pieces of coke. The method consists of determining the weight recorded on a balance when a particle is depressed below the surface of mercury, and calculating the apparent volume from the known density of mercury. The apparent density is calculated after weighing the particle in air. The method is particularly well suited for applications where a great number of determinations are to be made. An additional benefit is the minimal handling of the mercury. In any event, the usual recommended safety precautions should be adhered to.

SHERRIT Gordon Mines transplanted a 2000- ton mining plant and concentrator along with a town and its people 165 miles into undeveloped and almost inaccessible country in shifting its base of operations to the new mine at Lynn Lake. Faced with ultimate exhaustion of its ore bodies at Sherridon, Manitoba, the company, beginning in 1938, carried out an intensive program of prospecting and exploration in search of a new property. Late in 1945, diamond drilling of a magnetic anomaly near a minor surface expression of metallic sulphides gave promise of what has developed into the Lynn Lake nickel-copper deposit.

This paper examines the data required for intelligent equipment replacement decisions and discusses how to predict future repair cost from historic data, determine the total cost of various replacement alternatives, and evaluate the different replacement alternatives. The Velvet uranium mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The uranium ore body lies within the lower Triassic Chinle Formation, and the ore is associated with west-south- westerly trending fluvial sand systems. Exploration and mining are directed by longhole drilling and radiometric sampling. Results of the gamma probing, face scanning, and geologic mapping guide mining decisions and planning. Three people are directly involved with the geologic procedures: two geologists and a mine supervisor. The two geologists map, do rib scans, and direct longhole drilling. The third man involved, the mine supervisor, has last minute directive action based on shot hole probe data.
