OUTSTANDING among the year's events in copper has been the reimposition of an import duty of 4r. per pound in this country which became effective June 21. In consequence of this action by Congress, the Ottawa Empire conference recommended a duty of 2d. per pound equivalent at normal rate of exchange to our 4c. duty, on all copper originating outside of the Empire. Lip to the middle of this year only Russia and Japan had a closed market; the import duty on copper in Russia is 30 per cent ad valoremm and in Japan about 2c. Russia's consumption has always been in excess of production and she has imported from 2(1,000 to 40,000 ton, of copper per annum. Japan, with a production of 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month, has absorbed, in normal times, its production, but during recent: sears has exported varyiug quantities in 1929. 2,200 ton-: in 1930, 2,700 tons, and in 1931. 3,600 ton-. Aside from the-e two countries, the international market has heretofore been free. It and when the British Empire duty become, effective the world's markets will be divided into four unit: 1. Russia and Japan, 2. United States. 3. British Empire. 4. Rest of the world. The world's production at present is rennin it the rate of 930.000 tons per annum. This year's production will be over 1,000,000 tons because the several curtailment did not become effective until the second quarter. consumption will be slightly in excess. THE construction industry normally contributes extensively to the general economic welfare of all sections of the country. Billions of dollars are spent for materials and labor, and the success or failure of many business enterprises depends upon the volume of construction. The steel, aluminum, copper, cement, brick and tile, lime, gypsum, stone, sand and gravel, and several of the less prominent mineral industries are vitally concerned. Of great interest, therefore, is the accumulation of needed construction following the relative inactivity of the past five years, the recent moderate revival in building, and the prospect of a broader and more definite upturn. One may judge the magnitude of possible expenditure for construction by what has occurred in the past. The peak years were 1925 to 1928, inclusive, when the annual values of con- tracts awarded amounted to over six billion dollars. In marked contrast was the 1933 total of about 1% billion, the lowest level shown in the Federal Reserve Board Index, which goes back to 1919, and the more favorable 1935 figure of about 1.7 billion. An increase of nearly four billion over the 1935 volume would be necessary to equal the peak year 1928.

STRESS-induced twin boundary motion in the AuCd ß'phase (52.5 at. pct Au 47.5 at. pct Cd having an orthorhombic structure (space group D h)' was discussed for the case of transformation twins.' Mechanical twinning, i.e., introduction of new twin orientations by the applied stress was sometimes observed in the ß' phase which contained two transformation twin orientations. (See Ref. 2 for experimental details.) The transformation twins terminated at the mechanical twin boundary; the two initial orientations having been twinned to the new orientation as shown in Fig. l. In a "hard" tensile instrument, formation of each mechanical twin was accompanied by a sharp drop in load (and an audible click) resulting in a typical serrated load-extension curve. The mechanical twins increased in width and additional twins were nucleated as the load increased until the entire specimen was occupied by the mechanical twin orientation. A restoring force2 caused the mechanical twin and transformation twin boundaries to return towards their initial configuration on releasing the load. In a stabilized specimen* the total strain introduced by mechanical twinning was recovered on releasing the applied stress. Initial and final microstructures were identical. After decreasing gradually to a critical width, mechanical twins suddenly disappeared accompanied by audible clicks and sharp increases in load (measured at a constant rate of crosshead motion in a "hard" machine). Mechanical twins could be stabilized in any position by maintaining the applied load for a sufficient time, indicating a decrease in restoring force with time similar to that observed for transformation twins.' Orientation relationships for mechanical and transformation twins were determined and are shown in Fig. 2. The mechanical twin, T3, was twin related to transformation twin, T,, by reflection in (1ll), and twin related to transformation twin, T2, by reflection in (111)T, . THE art of melting nonferrous metals, in smelting, casting, and in compounding of alloys, is highly dependent on a knowledge of the temperature of the metal. This knowledge may reside in the experience and judgment of the melter, or it may be based on measurement by suitable instruments. It-is our purpose to discuss briefly the instruments available for such measurements, and more at length the present, practice in molten metals, without recommendation. In the limits of time and space allotted, we can do little more than mention the available methods of measurement that are directly applicable in this field. In the 1939 edition of the Metals Handbook, issued by the American Society for Metals, pages 285-310, there is a more extensive discussion of pyrometry than can be attempted here, which should be referred to for details we must omit. For reasons that will appear, thermoelectric pyrometry will constitute the major portion of our discussion of the subject, only limited attention being given to radiation or optical pyrometry. METHODS OF MEASUREMENT THERMOELECTRIC PYROMETRY A thermocouple consists of two dissimilar wires, or a wire inside a tube of a dissimilar material, joined together at one end, which is placed in the region or medium where the temperature is to be measured, while the other ends are connected through suitable lead wires to a voltage-measuring device, which may be a millivoltmeter or a potentiometer. An electromotive force is generated in the circuit, which is proportional to the difference in temperature between the hot junction and the junctions of the lead wires to the measuring instrument. If this latter temperature is maintained constant, the e.m.f. measured varies only with the temperature of the hot junction. Every thermoelectric pyrometer is calibrated for a particular cold-junction temperature such as 0°F., 32°F. or 75°F., but usually it is more practical to compensate instrumentally over the probable range of cold-junction temperatures than to maintain the junction at the particular temperature for which the instrument was calibrated. Thermocouple Materials Only a very few pairs of metals are in frequent use for pyrometric measurements. The most generally used are iron-constantan for temperatures up to 1500°F. in oxidizing and up to 1800°F. in reducing atmospheres and chromel-alumel, which may be used in oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 2400°F. for intermittent service. The accuracy of the latter deteriorates rapidly at temperatures above 2200°F. Platinum vs. platinum-rhodium thermocouples may be used up to a temperature of 3000°F , but they are easily contaminated by slow absorption of

THE territory covered in this discussion includes all the states west of the Mississippi river. Agriculture is expanding each year in this section, but until recent years the application of commercial fertilizers as an aid to crop production was not practised to any great extent. The use of commercial fertilizers has increased somewhat, but is still on a small basis as compared with the tonnages used else- where in the United States. During 1928 these western states used 665,100 tons of all classes of fertilizer as compared 'with 7,933,600 tons used in the whole United States; or this western area, compromising near- ly two-thirds the land area, uses about 5 per cent of the total fertilizer. To show how large a tonnage one state may consume, North Carolina for the year 192s used 1,349,360 tons of commercial fertilizer or about twice the amount used by 22 western states.

LESS advances in the technology of non-metallic minerals than for several years past mark 1931, and the cause is easily found. The universal depression and decreased markets for non-metallic as well as other mineral commodities has forced the producers to cut out all unnecessary expense and reduce operating costs to a minimum in order to keep going, even on a reduced output, and to prevent insolvency. The result. has been that but 'little research has been carried on, and such as has been completed has in but few cases been put into commercial practice on account of the expense involved in new equipment and plant changes. The trend in the industry has been more economic than technologic, and the greatest effort put on market studies and sales attempts to expand markets and scrutiny of present operating 'practice leading to reduction of cost of production. This tendency has been increased by highly competitive conditions and the buyer's market which has prevailed and to the fact that price has been a greater factor than quality in placing orders. Only in cases where improvements in technology would immediately and effectively reduce costs or where in special cases there was but little competition with almost a monopoly control has actual technical development taken place.

JAPAN'S iron and steel industry has always been closely connected with military strategy. Many years ago it became evident that the country's iron-ore resources were too small to support any extensive industry. As a result a belief in the imperative necessity of securing such resources has influenced Japan's political and economic policy in the Far East. Iron-ore developments in China are too well known to need repeating except to note that they have been rather unsatisfactory to both China and Japan. The ore deposit at Tayeh, in China, is not as large as was first believed and, though that and other sources of supply in China proper are now furnishing Japan a little more than a million tons of ore yearly, it cannot be counted upon as a large permanent source of supply. The deposit in Shantung proved so disappointing on further exploration that operations there have, so far as I know, long since ended. The operations at Pen-bsi-hu, in South Manchuria, which C. F. Wang de¬scribed in the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS for 1918, Vol. 59, were reported to have yielded 84,000 tons of pig iron in 1928 and about 50,000 in 1935, so they seem to be going back.

STATE geological surveys have had an interesting development in this country. They first appeared more than a hundred years ago. The fact that they have persisted and are now an important part of most state governments indicates the basic need for state departments con-cerned with mineral problems. The number of state surveys in 1941 (43) is at an all-time high, as is the aggre¬gate appropriation for their support for the fiscal year 1940-'41 ($1,600,708). The first surveys, those of North and South Carolina (see Fig. 1), made their appearance in 1820-'30, but neither survived that period. During the next two decades surveys were created in twenty states, but only three survived. In fact, it was not until the decade 1900-'10, when eighteen surveys were created and only five abolished, that these agencies became firmly established.

NO important discoveries of petroleum during 1933 were reported from New Mexico. Lea and Eddy counties were the centers of activity during the drilling season and each had a number of interesting completions. The Hobbs pool, in Lea County, was definitely outlined on the east, north and northwest. Under an agreement reached last summer by state officials and operators, the Hobbs pool was continued under proration throughout the year. One hundred eighty-four units of 40 acres each were being produced at the end of 1933. The allowable was 21,306 bbl. daily at the beginning of 1933, but when the agreement was revised in the spring the minimum was raised to 30,000 bbl., and by the end of the year had been raised to 33,473 bbl. At present the field is being prorated on the basis of 25 per cent on acreage and 75 per cent on potentials except in the southwestern edge of the field, where water encroachment is a problem. In this area the basis of proration is 40 per cent on acreage and 60 per cent on potentials. A corrective method employed in this part of the field has been partly successful. The water is advancing in the upper part of the pay, a dolomitic limestone, and in a number of instances packers have been set in the pay below the water and above the oil. The locating of a satisfactory seat for a packer is difficult and in some instances has not been a complete success. Pipe line runs from the field during the year aggregated 11,413,218 bbl., bringing the total gross production up to 41,093,681 bbl., of which 39,000,-000 bbl. has been produced under proration, which went into effect on July 10, 1930. On Nov. 30, potentials were determined on the assigned pressure basis and the total was reduced 71,165 bbl. daily, to 1,265,-332 barrels. The outstanding completions in the Hobbs pool were three in number, of which the best was the Humble Oil & Refining Company's No. 3B Bowers in sec. 20, 18S., 38E., with an initial production of 11,664 bbl. of oil and 10,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. The Shell Petroleum Company's No. 4B McKinley, in the same section, produced at the rate of 22,940 bbl. of oil while flowing open, but when tubed, flowed at the rate of 6610 bbl. INFORMATION is available on the effect of stress on permeability, coercive force, and hysteresis for a variety of materials' but for the technically important grain-oriented 3 pct Si-Fe' the stress effects are not adequately covered in the literature; in addition, most of the stress data do not permit estimation of what would happen to the 60 cycle watt losses of the material under stress. Direct measurement of these effects therefore has been made and appears to be of considerable theoretical as well as practical interest. Losses were measured on the central 25 cm portion of 40~3~0.035 cm samples which could be stressed in a small tensile machine built for this purpose. Under tension the following effects, illustrated in the figures by a particular example, were observed: 1—"Unstrained" material of commercially acceptable loss level shows no change or a small increase in loss at low elastic stresses. For the sample shown in the figures, this is illustrated during the initial run, where a 7 pct increase is observed (Fig. 1). 2—There is no additional change in loss when the sample is further strained up to the elastic limit (Fig. 1). Within that limit the loss-stress curve is reversible. This is not illustrated in Fig. 1. 3—Even in the plastic range only small increases in loss are observed as long as the sample is kept under stress (Fig. 2, point N); often no increase can be observed (Fig. 1). 4—A large increase in watt losses is observed after removal of the stress subsequent to plastic deformation (Figs. 1 and 2). 5—All, or nearly all, of the foregoing increase in loss due to plastic deformation can be eliminated by a reapplication of tensile stress but returns upon removal of this stress. This is illustrated in the third run (Fig. 3). This run remains within the elastic limit and shows the reversibility of the stress-loss curve under this condition. These findings have been confirmed on large Samples (approximately 200~10~0.035 cm and larger) except that under 1 no initial increase in loss was ever observed on these. The accuracy of the watt loss measurements is of the order of 1 pct. Neither bending of the sample in the tensioning device nor a redistribution of flux along the width of the sample accounts for these results. They therefore must be explained on the basis of either a change in the domain configuration due to stress or a change in the domain wall mobility. Acknowledgment The assistance of Mr. Robert L. THIS paper gives the author's personal idea of the general viewpoint of the world's largest mica consumer, the U. S. Army, toward the supply, uses, and conservation of mica. However, to cover so broad a subject in a brief paper will require the dismissal of many phases with little or no mention. For example, it will be necessary to omit further reference to phlogopite or amber mica, even though amber block and splittings for certain spark plugs and commutator segments present some supply problems. This paper will deal entirely with muscovite, or white mica. MUSCOVITE MICA Muscovite mica is available commercially in four general forms; namely, as block mica, as splittings, as washer punch, and as scrap mica.1 No strategic importance is attached to washer punch and scrap mica, even though scrap has found some use in military construction and in electrical ceramics. The use of washer punch as such has fallen off with the non-manufacture of household electrical appliances. Some qualities of block mica are also of little or no interest, but other qualities of block mica and all splittings are considered of vital importance. Army equipment requires large amounts of muscovite mica splittings in the form of built-up mica commutator segments and coil insulation in motors and generators. Other military items using significant amounts of muscovite splittings are transformers, switchboards, and blasting apparatus. Flexible mica tape, made from bookform or loose-dusted splittings cemented to paper, linen, glass cloth, and other backing, is widely used in coil insulation in heavy electrical equipment and in aircraft generators. All muscovite mica splittings come from India, principally because of the enormous amount of hand labor required in their preparation. In this emergency, the need for them was anticipated and large industry and government stocks were on hand, while shipments have continued to come by sea in spite of wartime hazards. With the possible exception of certain bookform splittings, no trouble is anticipated in supply. Accordingly, the remainder of this paper is devoted to block (or sheet) muscovite mica, including condenser film that is split from block. THE MICA PROBLEM Block muscovite mica is commercially classified into the following general qualities, beginning with the best quality: I. Clear and Slightly Stained (C & SS). 2. BaLatoc mine, the principal gold-producing mine in the Philippines, is 10 miles southeast of Baguio, in the Cordillera Central of northern Luzon.' The region is a deeply dissected plateau, ranging in altitude from 3000 to 5000 ft. above sea level. The rocks consist chiefly of granodiorite, diorite, and remnants of metamorphosed sediments, cut by dikes of andesite porphyry and quartz-diorite porphyry. All are intruded by a volcanic breccia plug, oval in horizontal section, about 3200 ft. long and 2300 ft. wide, which is the north central part of the mineralized area. Three main vein systems have been developed (Fig. I): 96, 231 and 364, which strike about N.70°E. and dip 50° to 90°S. Each system is a braided zone consisting of many individual components. They are disturbed by a series of premineral faults or shear zones striking about N.4s°E. Twelve of these produce important effects on the persistence, character, and quality of veins. From west to. east the faults are named (after claims): Hog, Big Gun, Bull, Pine, Lolita, Bar No. I, Bar No. 2, Curt, Sun, Helen, Itoe, and Frog. They are early breaks formed prior to the N.70°E. vein fractures. Mineralization occurs on them but, with several prominent exceptions, they are too low grade to mine. A number of northwesterly striking faults complete the structural pattern. Although they are relatively abundant, the effect on the veins is so small that they do not present any problems in mining or development. All of these faults that have been observed are later than the N.70°E. veins and offset them to the left. Northeast Faults The early northeast faults* are notably continuous in spite of their small displacements, 20 to 100 ft. Frequently they appear so weak that their importance is masked and their identity clouded. The gouge along any of these faults may vary from exceedingly weak at one point to very strong at another point only a short distance away. In other words, the amount of gouge depends on the changes of attitude of the fault plane, and is no indication of the extent of the movement. Places where walls are spread apart are filled with gouge squeezed from tight places. Also, mineralization sometimes obscures fault gouges by replacement. AfteR investigating the work of coal-dust fired reverberatories of the Canadian Copper Co., at Copper Cliff, Ontario, the management of the Washoe Reduction Works decided to experiment with and ascertain the advantages of using coal dust as a fuel in their reverberatories. Consequently, during the month of June, 1914, reverberatory furnace No. 8 was changed in order to use powdered coal as a fuel. The results obtained by this method of firing are gratifying and show a decided saving in cost of smelting as compared to grate firing with lump coal. The furnace, as remodeled, is 124 ft. long by 21 ft. wide, and varies in height from 8 ft. 6 in. at the back end to 5 ft. 7 in. at the skimming end. The general construction of the furnace is similar to that of the other furnaces at this plant. There are no side doors to this furnace, as it was thought that with the present arrangement for feeding no "fettling" or "claying" would be required. The interior of the furnace can be inspected through the burner port holes, after shutting off the burners and giving a few seconds' time for the gases inside the furnace to clear away. The charging is done on either side of the furnace from longitudinal hoppers, extending a distance of 74 ft. from the back end of the furnace. Leading from the hoppers into the furnace are 6-in. pipes, spaced 191/4 in. apart, through which the charge is intermittently dropped. The charge is kept well above the slag line at all times; in this way the side walls are protected and no fettling is needed on this portion of the furnace. The remainder of the furnace requires fettling. After operating for three months, we found that the bricks were eaten into along each side wall from the skimming door back to the point where the charge had been dropped. The depth of this cutting away was 8 in. close to the front end and gradually tapered to zero at a distance of 50 ft., and was greatest on the side of the furnace having the larger flue connection. Hoppers will be put in for the entire length of furnace, from which fettling material will be dropped, to prevent this cutting. After the run of three months, the roof was in excellent condition. At the back of the furnace the bricks were not cut into at all; at 30 ft.

BALATOC mine, the principal gold-producing mine in the Philippines, is 10 miles southeast of Baguio, in the Cordillera Central of northern Luzon.1 The region is a deeply dissected plateau, ranging in altitude from 3000 t0 5000 ft. above sea level. The rocks consist chiefly of granodiorite, diorite, and remnants of metamorphosed sediments, cut by dikes of andesite porphyry and quartz-diorite porphyry. All are intruded by a volcanic breccia plug, oval in horizontal section, about 3200 ft. long and 2300 ft. wide, which is the north central part of the mineralized area. Three main vein systems have been developed (Fig. 1): q6, 231 and 364, which strike about N.70°E. and dip 5o to 90°S. Each system is a braided zone consisting of many individual components. They are disturbed by a series of premineral faults or shear zones striking about N.45°E. Twelve of these produce important effects on the persistence, character, and quality of veins. From west to east the faults are named (after claims): Hog, Big Gun, Bull, Pine, Lolita, Bar No. I, Bar No. 2, Curt, Sun, Helen, Itoe, and Frog. They are early breaks formed prior to the N.70°E. vein fractures. Mineralization occurs on them but, with several prominent exceptions, they are too low grade to mine. A number of northwesterly striking faults complete the structural pattern. Although they are relatively abundant, the effect on the veins is so small that they do not present any problems in mining or development. All of these faults that have been observed are later than the N.70°E. veins and offset them to the left. NORTHEAST FAULTS The early northeast faults* are notably continuous in spite of their small displacements, 20 to 100 ft. Frequently they appear so weak that their importance is masked and their identity clouded. The gouge along any of these faults may vary from exceedingly weak at one point to very strong at another point only a short distance away. In other words, the amount of gouge depends on the changes of attitude of the fault plane, and is no indication of the extent of the movement. Places where walls are spread apart are filled with gouge squeezed from tight places. Also, mineralization sometimes obscures fault gouges by replacement. The mineralization of northeast faults has produced several important ore bodies; namely, 231 west on Pine fault and q6 vein on the same fault. IT has been demonstrated that alloys in systems structurally analogous to steel undergo reactions during heat treatment similar to those of steel, and yet very little work has been done on such systems, particularly from the standpoint of isothermal transformation. The literature shows that most of the isothermal work has been done on copper-alu-minum alloys.'-3 One paper has been reported on a eutectoid copper-silicon alloy,' and one on iron-nitrogen alloys.' There are no published reports of previous investigations on the isothermal transformation of a eutectoid beryllium bronze. At least two papers have been reported on isothermal age-hardening phenomena in beryllium-copper alloys of lower beryllium content.5,6 No information on eutectoid transformations in this alloy is given in Rimbach's book, "Beryllium." ' This paper reports the results of an investigation on the isothermal transformation characteristics of a eutectoid beryllium bronze. Materials Used and Procedure The eutectoid beryllium bronze used in this investigation was centrifugally cast at the Ampco Metal Co., Inc.. Milwaukee. Wis. A master beryl-lium-copier alloy, purchased from the Brush Beryllium Co., was used to make the beryllium addition to the copper. The alloy was melted under a protective carbon cover and Centrifugally cast into a graphite mold preheated to 920°F. Some trouble with segregation of beryllium in the melt was encountered but was eliminated by violent stirring during melting and pouring. Since very thin .specimens were used for the various heat treatments, only one casting of the four prepared was necessary for the complete isothermal study, thus eliminating any discrepancies caused by a change in composition. The analysis of this casting was 94.035 pct copper and 5.965 pct beryllium. A slight trace of iron was found. The castings were sawed into specimens approximately 3/32 in. in thickness. The specimens were first given an "austenitizing" heat treatment at 788°C, well within the single phase beta region, in a vertical tube furnace. The specimens were then quenched individually into an adjacent molten salt bath and held there for a definite time, after which they were quenched into water at room temperature. Temperature was held to ± 2°C in the salt bath. No homogenizing treatment was given the specimens other than the soak at 788°C. Despite the fact that this was a cast alloy, no evidence of segregation or coring was found in the microstructure of any specimen, either as cast or as heat-treated. Upon completion of the heat treatment, the speci-mens were subjected to metallographic examination

WHILE some of the mining companies have been pumping a small amount of water for some time, it is only in recent years that large quantities of water have been encountered in the Tonopah district. The water appears to be in different zones or belts so that the draining of one property does not necessarily affect the one adjoining. Consequently, each company has its own pumping plant and its own conditions. The companies panes handling the largest amount of water are the Tonopah Extension Mining Co., Halifax Tonopah Mining Co., West Tonopah Consolidated Mining Co., and Great Western Consolidated Mining Co. The Halifax shaft is on the eastern end of the district and the other three properties on the western. The ore-bearing formation occurs at greater depth on -the eastern and western ends, hence the water problem in these properties.
