THE fact that coals of different ranks and even of the same rank differ greatly in their amenability to iroth flotation is well known. In recognition of the need for an explanation of this phenomenon, two hypotheses have been suggested. Wilkinsl reported that the floatability of coals increased with an increase of the carbon content or rank. This postulate is handicapped by the fact that bituminous coals that possess moderate carbon contents are actually more floatable than anthracite coals that have high carbon contents, as shown in columns 6 and 9 of Table I. Taggart and his associates' implied that the difference of floatability between bituminous and anthracite coal was caused by the variation of carbon-hydrogen ratio. This is not applicable to the relative floatability of other coals and carbons. For example, column 11 of Table I shows that the carbon-hydrogen ratios of low-floating lignitic coal and non-floating animal charcoal are not only smaller than the moderate-floating anthracite coal, but are also similar to the high-floating bituminous coal. Furthermore, according to this hypothesis, high temperature coke-A (464), Ceylon graphite (1238), and lamp-black (357), all possessing extremely high carbon-hydrogen ratios, should be less floatable than other substances having much lower carbon-hydrogen ratios such as high volatile-B bituminous coal (11.9 to 22), anthracite coal (35.7 to 60.5), lignitic coal (15.6 to 33.6), and charcoal (13 to 26.2). However the former group is actually more floatable than the latter group. In this paper, a surface components hypothesis is Proposed to explain the different floatabilities of coals, carbons, and hydrocarbon minerals. The validity of the hypothesis is experimentally supported by the actual floatability, natural floatability, wettability, and adsorbability for neutral oils of coals, carbons, and hydrocarbon minerals tested. The combustible recovery of the flotation results, as used in this paper. was calculated from Eq. 1: P (100-Ep) 100 RWCP Rc= [1] F (100-E,) C, where R, is the percent combustible recovery; F and P are, respectively, the weight of feed and the weight of concentrate or product; E, and Ep are, respectively, the total percent of ash plus moisture in feed and in concentrate; Ru. is the percent weight recovery: and C, and C, are, respectively, the percent of combustible in feed and in concentrate. Except for ash and moisture content, all chemical components of a coal are assumed combustible. The experimental work included studies on flotation, ultimate and proximate analyses, contact angle tests, extractions of bitumen-A with benzene, adsorptions for liquid hydrocarbons, and wetting tests. Most of the flotation experiments were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine; others were tested in a small Denver machine. The solid feed for the former was 300 g and for the latter was 30 g. The solid materials used for flotation were crushed to —48 mesh. After the mineral pulp in the flotation cell was agitated for 6 min and the pH was adjusted to 7.5 & 0.2 with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, a petroleum light oil having a viscosity of 5.73 centipoises at 77 °F was added and conditioned for 2 min. Finally, pine oil was introduced and the froth was collected for exactly 3 min. The weight ratio of petroleum light oil to pine oil was kept constant at 1.5 to 1. Tap water was used for all flotation tests. Contact angles were measured with a captive bubble machine. For each coal sample, three specimens were mounted in transoptic mounts and polished with levigated alumina, first on a sheet glass, then on a cloth-covered metal polishing wheel. The polished specimen was first washed with distilled water and wiped thoroughly on a cleaned linen pad, then transferred into the pyrex cell of the captive bubble machine and conditioned for 6 min., and finally measured for contact angles at three or more points. Except where otherwise stated, the induction time for each measurement was 1 min. The contact angle representing each material was obtained by averaging the measurements of three specimens. The linen pad was first washed with warm distilled water, then boiled 30 min in a 2N sodium hydroxide solution, and finally washed with distilled water until no trace of sodium hydroxide could be detected in the decanted solution. The cleaned linen pad was stored under distilled water. Immediately before using, the pad was rewashed and transferred into a clean pyrex petri dish partly filled with distilled water. The glassware and rubber gloves used were cleaned by soaking in sulphuric acid-potassium dichromate cleaning solution, followed by rinsing with distilled water. The polished specimens were handled only by glass forceps. The ultimate and proximate analyses were made in accordance with the ASTM standard procedures for coal and coke. The extractable bitumen-A was determined by weighing 1 g of —100 mesh sample and placing it in a desiccated and weighed ASTM aluminum-extraction thimble. The thimble was placed in condenser hooks and inserted into an extraction flask containing 100 cu cm of benzene. The flask was heated and the benzene vapor was condensed by water coils. At the end of 24 hr of percolation, the thimble was removed, desiccated, and weighed. Loss in weight of sample was taken as bitumen-A and calculated to dry and ash-free basis.

Hydrogen-reduction data for naturally occurring single crystals and Prepared polycrystals of dense hematite have been presented. Results cover the temperature range 400o to 1000oC, for particles from ten sources, ranging in size from 0.07 to 10 mm and in shape from spheres to cylinders, cubes, and thin slabs. A consistent pattern of behavior has been demonstrated for single crystals and the reduction mechanism shown to be temperature-dependent. Below 579oC reduction is a simple topochemical process but at higher temperatuves it is complex and occurs in two distinct stages. Prepared particles from these laboratories behave in a similar manner to the single crystals. Data from two investigators showing topochernical reduction of Prepared particles above 575°C are inconsistent with that for other dense hematites. It is concluded that topochenzical reaction should not be used as a model for generalized rate expressions for dense hematites. SINCE 1958, McKewan1-6 has brought to prominence a simple concept of dense hematite reduction. This model is that oxygen is lost from a hematite particle undergoing reduction only from an oxide-iron interface that recedes in such a way that the oxide remaining retains the original shape of the particle, i.e., reduction occurs topochemically. An adjunct to this concept is that any intermediate oxides in the transition from hematite to iron only form thin layers so that oxygen cannot be lost from the particle without movement of the oxide-iron interface. Further, the rate of oxygen loss from the particle is said to be proportional to the area of the receding interface so that the iron layer grows linearly with time and the over-all reduction process can be described by the equation where ro and do are the initial particle radius and density, respectively, R is the fraction of the original oxygen lost, i.e., the fractional reduction, at time t, and K is the rate constant. The idea of an underlying simplicity in hematite reduction is attractive because it gives a tractable basis from which general theories of hematite reduction can be developed and it has received wide support,7-14 based mainly on the large amount of data13 that can be fitted to Eq. [I]. However, despite the fact that this equation has been derived for dense materials, the bulk of the data that have been used to test it13 have been for materials of only about 90 pct of theoretical density (5.26 g cm-3) or less, so that its generality for dense hematites has not been demonstrated. In any case, as will be seen, adherence of reduction data to Eq. [1] does not necessarily imply that reaction occurs topochemically. In this work only data for hematites approaching theoretical density are considered and it will be shown that in only one study besides McKewan's is topochemical behavior observed over the whole range of temperature investigated. For the majority of materials a linear rate of interface advance is observed to complete reduction only when wustite is not a stable intermediate phase in the transition of hematite to iron, i.e., at temperatures below about 575°C. Above this temperature, reduction is an exceedingly complex series of reactions that takes place in two distinct stages and it is only in the first stage that reaction in any way resembles a topochemical process. This means then that, far from representing general behavior as has commonly been supposed, topochemical reaction for dense hematites is only a particular behavior that may be observed under some circumstances. EXPERIMENTAL Hydrogen-reduction data have been collected and cross-checked in these laboratories by three techniques, weight loss, collection of water evolved in the reduction reactions, and direct metallographic examination. Details of these techniques are discussed elsewhere," where it is shown that results obtained by the three methods are in close agreement. The weight-loss method, by which most of the results were obtained, consisted of hanging the sample in a platinum mesh basket from an Ainsworth Model AV-AU-1 vacuum recording balance inside a vertical l 1/4-in.-ID alumina tube furnace. Dry deoxidized hydrogen was flowed downwards through the tube at 2 to 4 liters min-1 (stp). Single crystals from two sources and artificial oxides from three sources have been examined. The single crystals were from hematite deposits at Yampi Sound, Western Australia, and Brazil, the latter being obtained from Gregory, Bottley and Co., London, U.K. The "Yampi Blue" crystals were hand-picked from washed, magnetically concentrated, sized fractions, -200 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.07 mm) and —36 + 44 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.4 mm) while 10-mm cubes were cut from the Brazilian crystals with a diamond saw. The starting materials for the prepared particles were hematites designated, respectively, "Specpure Iron Oxide", Laboratory No. S639 from Johnson Matthey & Co. Ltd., London, U.K., "Calcined Ferric Oxide" from B.D.H. Laboratory Chemicals Division, Poole, U.K., and "Pigment Grade Oxide", EPR-50, from C. K. Williams & Co., Easton, Pa., U.S.A. Approximately spherical particles were prepared from the artificial oxides by rolling the material, moistened if necessary, in a glass jar, and cylindrical compacts approximately 10 mm in diam and of approximately equal height were pressed in a steel die at 200 psi. The formation of secondary - recrystallization tex-tlires in cube-textured 18-8 stain less steel (Type 304) Ilas been studied at three temperatures. Prolonged annealing at 100°'C protluces a PredoninanGly (520) [OOZJ-type texture, which is related to the cube te.ture of the primary lnatrix by a rotation of approxivzately 22 deg around the [001] axis in the rolling direction. Annealing at 1200 or 1300°C facers the formation of the (123)[272/-type texture, which is related to the matrix texture by a [111] rotation of app.voxiniately 40 deg. These observations suggest that in the secondary recrystallization of cube-texlut-ed stainless steel an apparent actilation energy for growth is higher for grains related to the tncrtuix Og [111] rotations thun those reloted by [100] rotations. THE formation of secondary-recrystallization textures in cube-textured primary matrices of fcc metals has been studied widely by various investigators. For Fe-40 pct Ni alloys, Pawlek' and wassermann2 reported that the orientations of secondary grains were related to the cube texture by rotations of 30 and 38 deg around [001] in the rolling direction. However, Rathenau and custers3 found that, while in one Fe-48 pct Ni alloy, most of the secondary grains were oriented with respect to the cube-textured matrix by rotations around [001] of 26.5 deg, in another alloy of a different origin, the orientations of secondary grains were related to the cube texture by rotations of approximately 35 deg around a [lll] axis. Similar orientation relationships were also observed between the secondary grains and the cube-textured primary matrices of copper.4"a No attempt was made to differentiate these two types of orientation relationships; reorientation by either a [111] or a [100] rotation was considered to be equally favored. The present investigation consisted of a study of the secondary recrystallization textures in cube-textured stainless steel. It was noted that the secondary grains formed in stainless steel were considerably smaller than those of Fe-Ni alloys or copper. This offered the advantage that the secondary recrystallization texture could be determined by the texture-goniometer technique, and a more detailed study of the textural development during the course of secondary recrystallization could be made. The effect of annealing temperature on the formation of secondary-recrystallization textures was also investigated. MATERLAL AND METHOD It was shown earlier"-" that a strong cube texture can be obtained in 18-8 stainless steels by rolling at 800°C to produce the copper-type deformation texture, followed by annealing at 800" to 1000°C for recrystallization. To improve the cube texture for the present study, a commercial-grade 18-8 stainless steel (Type 304) was rolled at 800°C first to 5 mm (0.2 in.) thick plates. Three of these plates were then stacked and welded together along the edges into a sandwich assembly. After annealing at 900°C for 20 min: the assembly was finally rolled at 800'C to 90 pct reduction in thickness with reheats and end-for-end reversals after each pass. Only the central strip, which was reduced from 5.0 to 0.50 mm (0.7 in. to 0.020 in.) thick, was used. The chemical composition of the steel in weight percent was as follows: C, 0.06; Mn, 0.38: Cr, 18.71; Ni, 9.56: P, 0.011; S, 0.009; and Si, 0.39. The purpose of rolling the strip in a sandwich assembly was to prevent direct contact between the central strip and the rolls. It was observed earlier" that, when the strip was rolled at 800°C without being enclosed in a sandwich assembly, the cube texture obtained by subsequent annealing at 900" or 1000° C for recrystallization was largely confined to the central section of the strip, while most of the recrystallized grains formed in the surface section of the strip were not cube-textured. This was obviously due to the fact that the actual temperature at the strip surface during rolling, as a result of direct contact between the strip and the cold and massive rolls, was considerably lower than 800°C. By using a sandwich assembly for hot rolling, the cube texture obtained upon subsequent annealing for recrystallization was found to extend through the entire thickness of the strip. After rolling, the central strip was taken from the sandwich assembly. and cut into specimens. Prior to annealing. the specimens were etched to 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) thick. A tube furnace provided with a purified, dry argon atmosphere was used for annealing. Textures were determined by the reflection technique. using a Siemens automatic texture-goniometer and ZrOz-filtered MoKa radiation. With a time constant of 4 sec. the preferred orientation of the secondary grains could be measured satisfactorily by the integrated intensities. Both (111) and (200) reflections were measured, and corresponding pole figures were constructed according to the techniques described previously.10 The agreement between results deduced from these two reflections was excellent. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Secondary-Recrystallization Texture due to Prolonged Annealing at 1000°C. Fig. 1 shows the primary-recrystallization texture of a specimen annealed at 1000°C for 30 min. A substantial improvement in both sharpness and intensity of the cube texture, owing to the present processing method, can be noted readily by comparing Fig. 1 with similar pole figures shown earlier in Refs. 9 and 11. The effects of the growth precipitates on the su-perconduching properties of an Al- 15 al. pel Zu alloy have been studied using magneization, transition lem-perature, and residual resistivity measurements. Aging at 230C for 1/2 to 11 he produces an increase in Hfp, Ike field of first penetration, and tut increase in trapped flux. The upper critical field, Hc2 remains constant for such aging tunes. Aging at 200°C produces a decrease in Hfp and an increase in trapped flux. The transition temperature remains constant at Tc - 1.227° ± 0.02°K for aging at 220°C for tims of from 1/2 to 10 hr, and for aging at 200°C it remains constant at Tc. = 1.18° i 0.02°K for times from 1/2 hv to 26 hr. The observed behavior indicates that the superconducting matrix when aged at 220°C behaves tike a type U su-perconducior, but when aged at 200°C behares like a type I superconductor. The magnetization changes after aging can be attributed to the growth and clutnge in distribution of the precipitate in a matrix of fixed composition. IT has been realized for some time that the superconducting properties of alloys are highly structure-sensitive. This is evident in the work of Mould and Mapother1 who examined the properties of an aluminum alloy. Precipitation effects have also been briefly mentioned in other studies.2-4 Bonnin and coworkers5 have observed a sharp inc rease in trapped flux in an A1-Mg alloy when the residual resistivity reaches a value that indicates it is a type II superconductor. Recently Blanc, Goodman, and Nemoz5p have reported on precipitation effects in A1-Ag alloys. Detailed studies of precipitation in Pb-Sn and Pb-Cd alloys made by Livingston6 serve to show that the upper critical fields are enhanced by quenched-in solute. Furthermore. at various stages in the precipitation process? the upper critical field is determined largely by the remanent solute. The observed magnetic hysteresis and trapped flux in such alloys result from the interaction between precipitate and the flux filaments in the mixed state. The flux trapping appears to depend largely on the precipitate distribution and is greater if the superconductor is type II than if it is type I. To examine the effect of precipitation in another alloy system, particularly one in which the composition of the superconducting phase does not change significantly during the course of precipitation, the Al-Zn system seems interesting, especially in view of the transition temperature and resistivity studies of Chiou and seraphim.' Furthermore, the recent detailed electron-microscope studies of an Al-Zn alloy by Richards and Garwood8 provide a guide for relating superconducting properties to changes in structure. For these reasons, magnetization, transition temperature, and residual resistivity measurements for varying times of heat treatment at two temperatures were made with a -15 at. pct Al-Zn alloy. The results are reported in this paper. I) EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used was prepared by Cominco Products Inc. from 99.9999 A1 and 99.999 Zn. It was chill-cast, swaged, and drawn to 0.125-in.-diam rod. The analyzed composition was 15.6 at. pct Zn (31.1 wt pct). A jeweler's saw was used to cut the 0.125-in.-diam rod into the 0.875-in. lengths needed for magnetization measurements. The ends of the cylinders were slightly beveled to remove the sharp edges. A portion of the original 0.125-in.-diam rod was drawn into 0.010-in.-diam wire and used for transition temperature measurements. Specimens were suspended from wires within a vertical furnace during heat treatment. All were homogenized at 500°C for a minimum of 3 days and subsequently solutionized for times in excess of 6 hr. The solutionizing temperature was held constant to +3°C. Individual specimens were homogenized, quenched, and aged several times and no effects indicating loss of zinc were noted. The suspended specimens were quenched by cutting the wires and allowing the specimens to fall into a silicone oil bath held at the aging temperature. They were then isothermally transforked by aging in the same bath used for quenching. After aging for the required time (approximately 10 min aging was necessary before the upper critical field reached a fixed value), they were briefly (1 to 2 sec) dipped into an acetone bath at room temperature to remove adherent oil and then immediately transferred to liquid nitrogen where they remained until inserted into the helium bath (usually within an hour). The temperature of the aging bath was held constant to +3°C for longer aging times. The cryostat used for the measurement of superconducting properties consisted of outer and inner dewars for liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, Stokes 6-in. booster diffusion pump and Stokes Model 212 mechanical pump, temperature controller to measure and control the temperature of the helium bath, and a superconducting solenoid with inserted search coils to provide the magnetic field and measure the magnetic moment of the specimens. A schematic diagram of the cryostat is shown in Fig. 1. An ultimate temperature of 0.85°K was reached with this apparatus. When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese: they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way: there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution arrived.

When shaft sinking was begun on the Vendome Mines property in the Barraute area of north-western Quebec, there was no indication of the flat mud seam that was later encountered, and no special precautions were taken in applying conventional methods of grouting. Failure of the first cementing attempt emphasized the important fact that mud is an adverse condition in grouting. A method was then devised that would remove the clay from those portions of the seam adjacent to the shaft, replacing it by a bulky mixture of cement and sawdust. Tests were carried out to insure that the seam had been properly sealed and that excavation could be resumed without endangering the shaft.

The structure of iron and steel, though the object of so much study and research for the past 25 years, is by no means thoroughly understood. In the first place, we have three or more distinct iron-carbon thermal diagrams, each with its own supporters, and each representing a theory of the structure and constitution of cast-iron. In the second place, by reason of the fact that austenite, the solid solution of carbon in iron, decomposes in the solid state into ferrite, or pure iron, and cementite (Fe3C), and that quenching from above this transition-range, no matter how rapid, cannot entirely prevent the change and thus preserve the austenite by itself at ordinary temperatures, it happens that under the microscope we find, in addition to the ferrite, Fe3C, and austenite, which the thermal diagram of steel requires, a series of transition-products with distinctive structures, to which have been given the names martensite, troostite, sorbite, etc. Now these transition-products, in addition to the solid solution, austenite, have been the source of much controversy, at times very bitter. One side would insist that, say, troostite was an entity, which the other side would deny, pointing out that it must be a transition-mixture, with a particular structure. That austenite was a solid solution of carbon in iron has been denied by one school; we have been told that Fe24C dissolved both Fe3C and Fe, and thus gave rise to a whole series of quenching-pro-ducts—all this in spite of the fact that no matter how the thermal diagrams differ in regard to cast-iron, they all agree in regard to the solid solution, austenite, for Fe24C finds no place on the diagram. Data are presented which show that fractions of varying densities from the same coals are oxidized at different rates by nitric acid. From oxidation data, the approximate quantity of "bright" and "dull" components may be calculated. Definite relationships between oxidation rate and rank are shown for density fractions from at least two bituminous coals. IN 1945, the Alabama State Mine Experiment Station initiated a program on the determination of fusain in certain coals of the state.1 Because of the lack of equipment and personnel necessary for microscopic examination, the chemical method2 was used exclusively. During studies of the distribution of fusain in fractions of various sizes and densities on a medium volatile coal, the author noted a higher rate of oxidation of the nonfusain part of the coal in the lower density fractions and the difference in rate became more marked the shorter the oxidation period used. Since durain and other "dull" components of coal have been reported3,4,5 to have higher densities than vitrain and the bright components, it appeared probable that the observed differences in rates of oxidation in the different density fractions were due to variations in petro-graphic composition. Such effects have been noticed by other workers.2,3 In order to obtain further evidence on this point, several Alabama coals of different rank have been separated into three or more fractions on the basis of density and their rates of oxidation determined, using the procedure specified for the determination of fusain, except that measurements were made at short time intervals as well as for the longer periods specified in the regular procedure. Significant differences in the rates of oxidation of the nonfusain part of the various fractions have been observed, and it is believed that studies of this type may make possible the identification of individual petrographic components or lead to methods for their semiquan-titative estimation. Properties of the Coals: Analyses and some properties of the whole coals studied are given in table I. The range in rank of the coals is not the widest possible within the state, but samples of the low volatile coals that occur in thin beds in the northeastern part of the state, were unavailable. The Clements bed is not, at present, considered workable. The coal is of medium volatile rank, quite friable, and very strongly swelling. Analyses of different size fractions show that the larger sizes are of higher rank than the smaller ones. Material passing the No. 50 sieve (all sieve sizes refer to the U. S. Standard Series) is close to high volatile A in rank, except for the size passing a No. 200 sieve, in which fusain is partially concentrated. Because of the variation in rank of the sizes of Clements coal, oxidation studies were made of two widely different size ranges. The + 1-in. material was crushed on rolls to about 1/8 in. and separated into five fractions by float-and-sink treatment in a benzene-carbon tetrachloride mixture. The — No. 4 + No. 8 and the — No. 4 + No. 50 size ranges tested overlap but the latter size was studied last with the expectation that it would include more oxidizable material than the first size. This proved not to be the case. Yields and properties of the specific gravity fractions oxidized are shown in table II. Milldale bed coal probably represents, as nearly as it is possible to do so, the "average" coal of the state. The material passing a No. 4 sieve was the only size range oxidized. Since durain and other "dull" components of coal have been reported3,4,5 to have higher densities than vitrain and the bright components, it appeared probable that the observed differences in rates of oxidation in the different density fractions were due to variations in petro-graphic composition. Such effects have been noticed by other workers.2,3 In order to obtain further evidence on this point, several Alabama coals of different rank have been separated into three or more fractions on the basis of density and their rates of oxidation determined, using the procedure specified for the determination of fusain, except that measurements were made at short time intervals as well as for the longer periods specified in the regular procedure. Significant differences in the rates of oxidation of the nonfusain part of the various fractions have been observed, and it is believed that studies of this type may make possible the identification of individual petrographic components or lead to methods for their semiquan-titative estimation. Properties of the Coals: Analyses and some properties of the whole coals studied are given in table I. The range in rank of the coals is not the widest possible within the state, but samples of the low volatile coals that occur in thin beds in the northeastern part of the state, were unavailable. The Clements bed is not, at present, considered workable. The coal is of medium volatile rank, quite friable, and very strongly swelling. Analyses of different size fractions show that the larger sizes are of higher rank than the smaller ones. Material passing the No. 50 sieve (all sieve sizes refer to the U. S. Standard Series) is close to high volatile A in rank, except for the size passing a No. 200 sieve, in which fusain is partially concentrated. Because of the variation in rank of the sizes of Clements coal, oxidation studies were made of two widely different size ranges. The + 1-in. material was crushed on rolls to about 1/8 in. and separated into five fractions by float-and-sink treatment in a benzene-carbon tetrachloride mixture. The — No. 4 + No. 8 and the — No. 4 + No. 50 size ranges tested overlap but the latter size was studied last with the expectation that it would include more oxidizable material than the first size. This proved not to be the case. Yields and properties of the specific gravity fractions oxidized are shown in table II. Milldale bed coal probably represents, as nearly as it is possible to do so, the "average" coal of the state. The material passing a No. 4 sieve was the only size range oxidized. The purpose of this investigation was to further study some of the factors affecting the air oxidation of sulfide minerals. Data obtained from laboratory studies on the effect of temperature, concentration of iron salts, pH, and other catalysts on the biological and nonbiological oxidation of sulfide minerals are presented. The oxidation of copper sulfide minerals and subsequent leaching of the soluble copper has long been a profitable operation. The chief oxidizing agent is oxygen from the air. This reaction is influenced by a number of different factors such as temperature, light, hydrogen ion concentration, oxidizing agents, and various catalysts. Sullivan1 found that copper sulfide minerals are slowly oxidized by the air and that dilute sulfuric acid and iron (111) increased their solubility. At that time it was not known that bacteria were involved in the oxidation of the sulfide minerals. It has been shown that pyrite, molybdenite, free sulfur, and the copper sulfide minerals found in the waste rock dumps in Bingham Canyon, Utah, are largely oxidized by chemosynthetic autotrophic microorganisms found in the leaching streams.2-6 Similar organisms have been isolated in other mining areas7,8 and from the effluents from coal rnines.9 The following are some of the questions that have arisen regarding the mechanisms of the reactions involved in the leaching process. How dependent is the leaching operation upon the biological reactions? How does the temperature effect the biological and non-biological reactions? How does the concentration of iron (II) and (111) effect the rate of oxidation of copper (II) sulfide? Does the iron act as a catalyst? Does activated carbon act as a catalyst on the oxidation of sulfide minerals? What effect does the hydrogen ion concentration (pH) have on the above reactions? The purpose of this paper is to report the results of laboratory studies on these problems. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus used in this investigation was an air lift percolator described in our earlier work.' The percolator consisted essentially of an air lift which enabled the leaching solution and microorganisms to pass freely through a suspension of mineral (substrate) in Ottawa sand. The air lift served the additional purpose of maintaining an ample concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the nutrient (leaching) solution. (See Fig. 1.) The percolators were so constructed that they could be immersed in liquid constant temperature baths for temperature studies. The thermostats were controlled to +0.5°C. The reactions were all run in the dark. The percolators were charged with one to three g of mineral, dispersed in 100 g of Ottawa sand and 100 ml of nutrient or leaching solution. The sand was purified to remove traces of iron by digesting with concentrated hydrochloric acid and washng with distilled water until free from chloride. After drying, the sand was ready for use. The compressed air supply was regulated to 5 psi and bubbled through an aerator containing distilled water, which was maintained at the same temperature as the bath used. THE occurrence of this gas, in quite appreciable. quantities, has been observed for many years in its escape along the creeks of Western Pennsylvania, and more recently, in much larger quantities, from the oil wells in and near Venango County. Within about five years several gas wells have been struck, from which the gas has escaped continuously in prodigious quantities and at great pressure. During the last year a systematic attempt has been made to utilize the flow of gas from one of these wells, and results have been reached which were quite unexpected. This well, near Leechburg, Armstrong County, is about twenty miles northeast of Pittsburgh, on one of the side tributaries of the Alleghany River. It had been drilled in search of oil to a depth of 1250 feet in 1871, but none was found. A great flow of gas was developed, however, accompanied by a slight spray of salt water, and this has continued with little or no diminution to the present time. The gas in its escape has been discharged through a 5-inch pipe, and at a pressure of from 60 to 80 lbs. per square inch, but no exact determinations, either of the pressure or quantity, have been made. The rolling mill of Messrs. Rogers & Burchfield is on the opposite side of the river, and it has been for some years devoted to the production of fine grades of sheet iron from charcoal pig metal, by puddling and in knobbling fires. The usual weekly product of the mill has been 30 tons of No. 30 tin plates, and 50 tons of No. 24 to 28 sheets. The well was bought by this firm for $1000, and the gas is led across the river, a distance of about 500 feet, through a 3-inch pipe. It is distributed through half-inch pipes, and at a pressure of about 45 lbs. per square inch, to several of the furnaces, but a large fraction of the total flow of gas is still wasted at the well. No essential alteration in any of the furnaces has been found necessary in the use of the gas fuel, except to brick up the fire-bridge and to put in the gas and air pipes. The old grate used for coal is loosely covered with bricks and cinder, so that a slight percolation of air may take place through them. Discussion of the Paper by C. E. Corson, which was presented at the London Meeting, July, 1906. (See Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 11, September, pp. 725 to 742.) ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-On close examination I think it will be found that the evidence by which Mr. Corson claims to have shown the inaccuracy of a statement I made a few years ago, is far from convincing. This statement is:- "Hot work, as such, has no influence upon the structure of the metal. Indirectly, however, by retarding crystallization until a lower temperature is reached, it may influence its structure most decidedly ; but the same results could be accomplished by heat-treatment alone, i.e., by reheating the unworked metal to the temperature from which the unworked piece was allowed to cool undisturbedly." The Metallographist, vol. ii., p. 267 (under the head of "Changes of Structure Brought About by Work"). Of the two pieces of steel tested by Mr. Corson, one was worked and finished at a " cherry red " and ' the other reheated to a cherry red, and the assumption was made that, in both cases the temperature was about 715° C., although no pyrometric device was used to record it. The possibility of considerable difference in temperature alone is so great as to invalidate Mr. Corson's inferences. The apparent temperature, moreover, is so close to the critical point of the steel as to render any conclusion very hazardous. -It is not at all evident that the annealed piece was reheated past its critical point, in which case reheating would have had practically no effect. Nor is it evident that the piece forged and finished at a cherry red was not actually below the critical point, which, by definition, I have called cold worked. Mr. Corson's explanation that " Under proper reheating, on the other hand, the steel becomes a solid solution from which crystals of approximate homogeneity and uniform size may separate" will not be readily understood.

The slackening of activity in oil development in Colombia, which was noted in 1931, continued throughout 1932. In the producing fields output was further curtailed and active operations were substantially reduced. Exploratory work was at the lowest level reached in a good many years. Applications and Contracts for New Concessions The areas covered by the four applications accepted by the government in 1931 for concessions on national lands were not finally awarded the applicants, although the indications are that these will be granted during the coming year. iln application of Sr. Luciano Restrepo for a concession of 49,232 hectares located on the north side of the Sogamoso River in the Municipality of Bolivar, Department of Santander, was accepted by the Government toward the end of the year. The Government is expected to take action toward granting or denying this concession during 1933. The Richmond Petroleum Co. (Standard Oil Co. of California subsidiary) leased from Manuel Davila P. and Eduardo Villar a private tract known as the Fierro Arriba and Fierro Abajo lands located in the municipality of Victoria, Department of Caldas, near Honda. The terms of the lease provide for a cash rental and royalty. The company is allowed 10 years in which to start exploratory work. The lease covers a period of 15 years and is subject to renewal by periods of similar duration. Richmond Petroleum Co. The Richmond Petroleum Co. finally abandoned its Repelon No. 3 at 4312 ft., owing to drilling difficulties. No new hole was made on this well during the year. This was the only active drilling project in the country outside the Tropical Oil Company's concession, and with its abandonment all wildcat activities in the country ceased. HE who enters a mining claim within an Indian reservation of the United States of America acquires no rights thereby, because of the fact that the lands within such Indian reservation are not a part of the public domain, and cannot be located or acquired as mineral land. However, where such an entry is authorized as to a particular reservation by an Act of Congress, such claims as may be entered under such authorization are thereby segregated from the reservation, and the Indian title is extinguished. Under the Choctaw Constitution, any citizen of that nation, in other words any Choctaw Indian, who discovered a coal mine, acquired an exclusive right to all coal within a radius of 1 mile. The laws of the Chickasaw nation provided for the formation of corporations to develop coal and other mines, with authority to contract with others to develop and work the mines. Under these laws, leases were made; but Congress subsequently abrogated all existing leases, prohibited all persons from receiving royalties from such mines, and provided that all coal within the nation should remain the common property of the tribes. Such leases are now expressly prohibited by an Act of Congress (32 United States Statutes at Large, 655). All leases of mineral lands upon Indian reservations must now be made under regulations promulgated by the Secretary of the Interior, and the royalties must be paid into the United States Treasury for the benefit of the tribes. In Canada the Indians have no rights to the royal mines and minerals, and the government can make no stipulation with the Indians which would affect the rights of the Province in which the lands are situated. Therefore, while it is true that under our present law no rights can be acquired to a mining claim within an Indian reservation, it seems to be fully within the authority of Congress to make laws, giving such rights to mineral locators as it may deem necessary or expedient.

The Morning silver-lead-zinc mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is about 'two miles northwest of Mullan, Ida. The lode is a metasomatic fissure vein. The orebody is approximately 2000 ft. long within the bounds of the property and varies in width from knife edge stringers to 50 ft. It has been developed to a depth of 3600 ft. and stands nearly vertical in Revett quartzite, which .strikes north 65" west. The high-grade veins and lenses are generally mixed with waste (siderite, quartz, and quartzite). The average grade of ore to sorting plant in 1921 was 4 oz. silver per ton, 8.6 per cent. lead, and 4.1 per cent. zinc. Wall rock stands only a short time without timbering. The minimum angle of gravity flow is 45". The ratio of waste sorted out to ore is 6 per cent. No gases are generated underground and temperature has no influence on mining operations. Fresh air is forced down the air raise and up the main shaft. Drifting and Stoping Main drifts 12 ft. wide and 13 ft. high are driven every 200 ft. (vertically) and are connected by raises 125 ft. apart. These raises consist of three compartments (chute, tramway, and timber slide) and are for the purpose of ventilation, access, and hoisting supplies to stopes. Ground is stoped between raises. Chutes are placed every 25 ft. for drawing off ore broken in stopes. Waste for filling is obtained from waste raises off the stope in walls or waste is dumped from the level above down the chute compartment of raises, which is bulkheaded so that waste can be drawn off at any floor as required. Timbering Posts and caps for square sets (varying in diameter from 6 to 24 in.) are cut to length in a sawmill on the surface. No preseratives are used. Timber is taken on a flat car along drifts to a raise nearest the working place and hoisted as required. Practically no timber is salvaged for

The year 1935 was mostly quiet in West Virginia, and devoted to routine drilling in old pools and extensions. A notable exception to this general rule, however, was the further development and proving of a field of gas discovered in 1930 in the deep Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) in Kanawha County, as later discussed. No new pools of oil were found and little or no attempt was made to search for them. No new pools of gas were recorded but various extensions of old pools were made. There were no new pipe line extensions of consequence, either for oil or gas. Operating technology was much the same as in recent years, there having been some further advances in repressuring oil wells and in the use of acid for treating small wells in calcareous formations, and some change in the technique of shooting gas wells. Financially, there has been a full market for all crude oil produced and a fair market for gas. There have been occasional transfers of producing oil or gas properties, mainly between established companies. Most of the attempts made to finance mergers and new developments have failed largely because of difficulties encountered under the Federal securities act. This situation has prevented the normal turnover of properties by small operators who frequently desire to sell partly developed interests and then step out into new ventures. New Development In 1935 the State issued 569 permits for drilling and records the same number of completions. One trade journal records 533 completions and another 483. A running record kept by the writer accounts for 713 completions, with 156 oil wells, 417 gas wells and 140 dry holes (Table 3). Some of these completions may be old wells drilled to deeper sands. Some, apparently, have been drilled without legal permit. Extensions of Producing Areas Ritchie County has again led all others in new drilling, with 137 completions as compared to 74 in Calhoun and 61 in Cabell.
