ThE Pocahontas coal field comprises the area in Tazewell County, Va. and Mcrcer and McDowell counties, W. Va., in which Nos. 3 and 4, Pocahontas seams of bituminous coal are mined. It is a mountainous region with ridges rising 300 to 1000 ft. (91 to 305 111.) above the very narrow valleys and, except for some poorly kept farms along the tops of the ridges and the area occupied by the mining and coking plants and villages, is wooded throughout. First shipments were made from Pocahontas in 1883. There are now about 100 mines, 95 per cent. of which are drift mines. At the end of 1920, approximately 298,000,000 gross tons of coal had been produced and 35,000 acres of coal mined. No. 3 seam is from 4 to 10 ft. (1.2 to 3 m.) thick, but the change is gradual and the thickness fairly uniform in any particular locality. It has a streak of bone, about 2 in. (5 cm.) thick, to which the coal adheres on both sides. In parts of the field this bone is replaced by hard slate, usually from 2 to 4 in. thick. The seam has a slate or fireclay bottom and a draw-slate top. No. 4 seam is from 65 to 80 ft. (19.8 to 24 m.) above No. 3 seam, and of minable section only in the western part of the field. It is from 3 to 8 ft. thick and has two streaks of bone, cach from 1 to 2 in. thick. It has a fireclay or slate bottom and is overlaid by from 4 to 24 in. of a laminated coal and slate, locally termed "black rash," which is separated from the coal seam by about 3 in. of slate. This "black rash" averages about 2.5 per cent. ash, but contains some clean coal. The coal in both seams is quite soft. Cleavage sufficieiltly well defined to exert an influence on the mining is rare. Overlying strata arc slates, shales, and sandstones, the sandstones predominating, extending from 30 to 1000 ft. above No. 3 seam. The strata directly above the draw slate of No. 3 seam, or "black rash" of No. 4 seam, and up to the first sandstone are usually slates or shales, about 10 ft. thick over the.

A study has been made of the creep behavior of ß-NiAl of stoichiometric composition in the temperature range 475" to 775°C. Single crystal tensile specimens were deformed under a constant applied load. From slip line studies and tensile axis rotations it was concluded that the crystals deformed by pencil-glide on (100) and (110) planes with a (100) slip direction. Electron microscope thin-film studies showed evidence for profuse cross-slip, and the dislocation Burgers vector was determined to be (100). There was no tendency for the dislocations to lie in definite slip planes, although a strong alignment of segments of edge dislocations was frequently seen. The activation energy for creep in the temperature range 475" and 775°C was judged to be much lower than that for creep at temperatures above 775°C. It is possible that the rate-controlling process is the thermally activated cross-slip of screw dislocations. In recent years considerable interest has developed in the possible use of high-melting-point intermediate phases for high-temperature applications necessitating good creep resistance. Ordered alloys such as Ni3A1, modified by alloying additions, have received particular attention, culminating in the recent development by Pratt and Whitney of single crystal turbine blades.' The intermediate phase NiAl has considerable theoretical interest from a creep standpoint because not only is it ordered up to the melting point (-1650°C at stoichiometry) but it contains a high concentration of structural vacancies on the aluminum-rich side of stoichiometry. These vacancies are known to exert a strengthening effect under some conditions,' but in addition they might be expected to affect high-temperature creep rates through dislocation climb. The present paper deals with the slip line and dislocation structures developed during creep of stoichiometric NiAl between 475" and 775C, and with possible attendant creep mechanisms. MATERIALS AND TEST TECHNIQUES NiAl ingots of stoichiometric composition were prepared by induction melting 99.996 pct A1 and 99.98 pct Ni (kindly provided by the Kaiser Aluminum Co. and the International Nickel Co., respectively) in 100 cc pure alumina crucibles in a helium atmosphere. No chemical melting flux was used in order to avoid con- tamination of the alloy. Each ingot was slowly direc-tionally solidified to avoid porosity and to produce very large grains up to 2 in. in length. In this way, ingots were obtained which were suitable for sectioning into single crystal creep specimens. Chemical analysis indicated that all alloys were within the range 49.6 0.3 at. pct Ni. For the present investigation, identical rectangular single crystal blanks were cut vertically from one particularly large crystal in an ingot using a series of three diamond cut-off wheels with appropriate spacers. Thus, all sliced crystals had the same orientation with the tensile axis parallel to the long side of the rectangle; the initial orientation of the tensile axis is shown as S, in Fig. 1. The blanks were homogenized at 1250 to 1300°C for 48 hr and subsequently cooled slowly to room temperature. A gage length of rectangular cross section and about 0.75 in. in length was prepared on each specimen using an electrolytic lathe and a dilute nitric/phosphoric acid electrolyte. The gage length cross section was 0.250 0.0005 in. by 0.040 ± 0.0005 in. Holes to accommodate tensile grips were electrolytically machined using a rotating acid jet. After creep testing, this same technique was used to cut discs for transmission electron microscopy. Probably few, if any, of the many serious problems confronting malleable foundries have been more difficult of solution than the question as to why malleable that is ductile, black in fracture, and normal in all respects before galvanizing should, by that process, be rendered brittle, brilliantly crystalline or "white" in fracture, and of low resistance to shock. So far as we are aware, the technical literature contains no data or discussions on this subject, except two referencesl,2 of a general character. It is apparently a question that every one concerned, producer and consumer alike, has been willing to evade as far as possible. Various theories as to the cause of the deterioration have been given but such checking of these theories as we have done indicates that there was no sound basis for most of them. This work on the galvanizing of malleable was first undertaken in 1916, and has continued until the present time. We now feel that for all practical purposes we have reached a solution and are glad to be able to offer it in a form that can be readily applied to production processes. OF all the machinery used in mining work, mine cars are probably the most abused. They are hauled through water and muck, up hill and down grade, whipped around curves, bumped and jerked, and exposed to the ravages of the weather. However, as a general rule their lubrication is not altogether neglected. The mine operator may not heed the extra drag that a frozen conveyor bearing gives, but he is all too aware of the increased load that faulty mine car wheels put on his power plant. When the circuit breakers begin to fly, and when his mine loco- motives come out with only half the cars that they were able to carry a month before, then neglected mine car wheel lubrication becomes apparent, and woe to the person responsible.

IN six years the construction of Hoover Dam and the power plants probably will have reached the operating stage and this vast new source of power will then be continuously available for industry. The height of the darn will be 580 ft. and the average annual flow of the Colorado River is calculated at approximately 24,000 cu.ft. per sec. If this full head and average flow can be maintained the year round, about one million horsepower will be generated. The U. S. Reclamation engineers, taking into consideration the probable range in flow and head, have set the figure for power contracts at 660,000 firm horsepower, which can be assured at all times of the year. During the months of heavy run-off of water from the Colorado River Basin the power plants should be able to generate the full 1,000,000 hp. capacity of the power plants, so there will be 340,000 excess or secondary horsepower. The cost of firm power at the switchboard will be close to 2.15 mills per kw.-hr., equal to $14.05 per hp.-yr., and the cost of the secondary or off-peak power will be close to 0.8 mills per kw.-hr., or $5.22 per hp.-yr. In no place in the country can such cheap power be obtained today. The electrochemical industry is in a state of flux because the power costs from its old sources have increased so much (to $30 per hp.-yr. at Niagara) that the industries have had to seek new sources, so they have gone to Canada and Norway and built new plants.

Discussion of the paper of. C. L. DAKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1429 to 1436. A. C. LAWSON, Berkeley, Cal.-It appears that our bog-iron ores are due in a large measure to the activity of certain iron bacteria, and a paper dealing with this subject that makes no reference to that particular agency strikes me as rather curious. C. L. DANE, Rolla, Mo.-Mr. Lawson's criticism that this paper makes no reference to the activity, of iron bacteria is scarcely true. On p. 1430 I stated: "Certain bacteria precipitate iron by building the hydrated oxide into their body cells," and again, "There are many other means by which, under special conditions, iron may be precipitated in nature. Oxidation, evaporation of CO2, and iron bacteria have been held to be the most important." Thus the activity of bacteria receives as extended mention as the action of any other agency in precipitation of iron. The paper makes no pretense of covering exhaustively the origin of bog ores, but, as its original title suggested, refers to Some Principles Controlling the Formation and Distribution of Bog Iron Ores. Mr. Lawson seems to have entirely missed the main thesis of the paper, which attempts to establish some relation between glaciation and abundance of bog ores now forming. Unfortunately, I have no immediate access to the literature of the subject, but my best recollection is that the data regarding iron bacteria throw no light whatever on the cause of bog ores being so much in ore abundant within the limits of the glaciated regions, and being reported much less frequently from the tropics. This lack of data is suggested in the following (p. 1434): "It has already been shown that bacteria aid in the precipitation of iron. Whether tropical conditions increase or decrease the activity of such bacteria is unknown."

THE tests here described were made to obtain information regarding costs, efficiency, etc. of baking cores in an oil-fired oven, and two electric ovens, which were installed, early in 1920, in the core room of The Ohio Brass Co. and were used almost continuously during the rest of that year. Operating costs were rather high so a complete test was undertaken early in 1921. The ovens will be referred to as Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Nos. 1 and 2 are electric ovens of different makes while No. 3 is an oil-fired oven made by the firm that made No. 2. The three are equipped with similar ventilating devices. They have full-height doors at front and rear. The cores are placed on iron racks, which are lifted by Cowan trucks and rolled into the ovens through the front doors. When baked, they are removed through the rear doors. Fig. 1 shows the general plan of the electric ovens while Fig. 2 shows the plan of the oil-fired oven. Oven No. 1 is 91 in. (231 cm.) wide, 83 in. (210 cm.) high, and 79 in. (200 cm.) deep, inside measurements. The walls are constructed in, panels about 18 in. (46 cm.) wide and 4 3/16 in. (10.6 cm.) thick, packed with blocks of insulating material and covered with sheet iron. The concrete floor on which the ovens set is 13 in. (33 cm:) thick. A recess about 5 in. (13 cm.) deep was cut in the floor to provide room for the heating units. Channels and plates supported. on I beams serve as' supports for the trucks and racks. The ventilating system consists of a Sirroco No. 1 ½ fan, connected so as to draw air from the top of the-oven or from the room, through damper C, and to deliver it either to the bottom of the oven or to the floor; the delivery is controlled by the vane A. The fan and pipes are covered with ¼ n. (6.3 mm.) asbestos cement lagging.

THE American copper mining industry is threatened with disintegration and destruction. This threat is not one which may only materialize in the distant future. The destruction has already commenced. At present, many domestic mines have already closed down. .Others are operating on a greatly curtailed basis. Those operating are doing so only at tremendous loss-because the selling price of copper is below the cost of production and rapidly diminishing financial resources and credit clearly forecast the early suspension of operations in most of the industry. Unemployment in the mining districts is increasing by leaps and bounds. While this condition is due in some measure to the present unsatisfactory state of business in general, the copper industry, unlike other lines of business, sees no possibility of recovery without definite aid. The fundamental, underlying cause of present conditions in the American copper mining industry is the unprecedented rise in foreign production, and the basic change which has taken place in the world copper industry in the last three years. The American industry had begun to feel this change early in 1929 long before the general collapse of business in the fall of that year. While the distress in the industry is undoubtedly aggravated by the present economic depression, it nevertheless would have arrived and. have been present at this time, regardless of general business conditions.

To better understand the Co-Mo interaction in maraging steels, the precipitate reversion behavior of two alloys closely related to the 18 Ni-250 grade has been studied. The reversion experiment is carried out by aging at a low temperature, T1 (preaging temperature), for some period of time and then aging at a higher temperature, T2, called the reversion tetnperature. Aging and reversion tmzperatures used were in the range 679 to 1050°F. Reversion is marked by an increase in resistivity and a decrease in hardness. It teas found that some reversion took place at all cornbinations of T1 and T2 but that pronounced rei3ersion resulfed for an Fe-18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo-8 pcl Co alloy exposed to preagz'ng' temperatures at or below 850°F. A similar alloy not containing cobalt exhibited no such discontinuity in reversion behazior with TI. The results are interpreted in terms of two types of molybdenum-rich precipitates, one nucleated at dislocations and the other in the matrix. The increased supersaturation resulting from the presence oj- cobalt evidently provides sufficient energy to nucleate the matrix phase. Anotnalies in the temperature dependence of the resistivity decrease and peak hurdness in the Fe-18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo-8 pct Co alloy as a junction of aging temperature noted in an earlier study are explained on this basis. SEVERAL investigatorsl-9 have studied the details of the precipitation-hardening reaction of the maraging steels. The great majority of conclusions have been drawn from transmission electron microscopy. Although much has been learned by this method, alternate techniques which will give information earlier in the aging process are needed for a more complete understanding of the series of precipitation steps probably involved in the aging reaction. Peters and cupp'' have recently shown, by measurements of the kinetics of precipitation, that an 18 pct Ni-Co-Mo maraging steel shows a distinct change in precipitation behavior at aging temperatures below 850°F. The results were interpreted in terms of the existence of two types of precipitates at low aging temperatures. Only one precipitate type is present at higher aging temperatures. The low-temperature precipitate was found to be a particularly effective strengthener. No evidence for the additional low-temperature precipitate was found in the 18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo ternary alloy. The object of this investigation was to study further the characteristics of the two types of precipitates and the interaction between cobalt and molybdenum characterizing this system. Some preliminary experiments indicated a difference in reversion behavior in specimens aged above and below 850°F. This suggested that knowledge of the reversion behavior might shed some light on these two questions. Hardy and Heal11 have defined reversion as the loss of hardness, electrical conductivity, or other properties caused by heating for a very short time at temperatures above the aging temperature. The precipitate reversion referred to in this paper is entirely distinct from "austenite reversion" often referred to in maraging steel literature. This latter phenomenon could more accurately be called the diffusion-controlled formation of austenite. Much has been written about reversion in several of the aluminum-base binary and ternary alloys.'2-16 Two explanations for reversion have been advanced. Based on the classical nucleation theory of Volmer-Weber-Becker-Doring,17 Konobeevski18 suggested that reversion was due to the size of the precipitate particles

A new constitutional diagram is presented for the cobalt-rich end of the cobalt-titaniurn system. The modifications result from the presence of a new, intermediate, fcc phase, ?, the existence and homogeneity limits of which were established by metallo-graphic and X-ray studies of alloys containing from about 3 to 30 pct Ti. The precipitation of the ? phase from supersaturated solid solution was studied by hardness and electrical resistivity measzsrements, and two distinct stages in the process were observed. COBALT forms the base for a number of precipitation -hardenable alloy systems which may be divided into two distinct categories of practical interest, a) those hardened by intermetallic compounds and b) those hardened by carbide formation. The precipitation of intermetallic compounds from solid solution in cobalt-rich alloys has, however, received very little attention. Although the phase diagrams for some binary systems capable of precipitation have been determined,' there is an almost complete lack of data on the property changes associated with the precipitation, and even less information on the kinetics of the reactions or morphology of the products. More information is available on the precipitation of carbides because of the practical significance in superalloys. A survey of cobalt binary phase diagrams suggested that the cobalt-titanium alloys might provide interesting and useful precipitation-hardenable alloys. The equilibrium diagram as proposed by Wallbaum2 is shown in Fig. 1. Köster and wagner3 have indicated that the maximum solubility of titanium in cobalt is about 10 pct at the eutectic temperature (1135oC), and this decreases to about 7.2 pct at room temperature. The temperature of the allotropic transformation in cobalt is lowered by the addition of titanium, about 5 pct being sufficient to retain the high-temperature fcc modification to room temperature. Wallbaum and Witte 4,5 have indicated that the precipitating phase in alloys containing up to about 29 pct Ti is Co2Ti, a hexagonal Laves phase of the MgNi, type. With slightly higher titanium contents, they also report a cubic modification of Co2Ti of the MgCu2-type Laves phase. Duwez and Taylor6 confirmed the existence of the hexagonal (MgNi2) modification but not the cubic (MgCuz) modification of Co2Ti and suggested that existence of the cubic form may have resulted from impurities in Wallbaum's alloys. In their work on Laves-type phases, Elliott and Rostoker 7 reported the cubic modification of Co,Ti, but did not confirm the existence of the hexagonal modification. However, Dwight8 in a discussion of the work of Eliott and Rostoker again showed the existence of both modifications of Co2Ti, a result which was confirmed at that time by Elliott and Rostoker. As a result of a study on the iron-cobalt-titanium system, Köster and Gellers suggested the existence of a Co3Ti phase isomorphous with Fe3Ti. Witte and Wallbaum,' however, established the fact that no compound, Fe3Ti, exists in the iron-titanium system, and in a later publication, wallbaum2 stated that Kitster and Geller's reasoning was not valid, and no compound, Co3Ti, exists. Abrasives include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (pressure blasting for example). They do not include abrasive tools, for instance, lathe tools and files-or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted although some chemical-action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives, for example, many automobile and metal polishes. General Considerations The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn-for example: in garnet for sandpaper neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains are wanted. For still other uses, great hardness is objectionable; for example, abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps. For the most efficient use in the more critical applications, the different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable; thus, while crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the papers are not at all interchangeable in their use applications. In the last analysis, the choice of a high grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work done by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive but the artificial abrasive may do so much better work than the natural one, and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost will be less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives. Abrasive Value Mineralogical hardness or "scratch" hardness as expressed in Mohs' scale is an important property in evaluating abrasive materials, but, as noted before, it is only one of several essential properties. The mineral hardness of pure crystal almandite garnet is about 7.5, but if the crystal is crossed by incipient fracture planes, or if it contains inclusions of other minerals, the apparent or useful hardness may be much lower. While the quartz grains in a sandstone have a hardness of 7, the bond holding the grains together may be so weak that the stone is valueless as a commercial abrasive. In artificially bonded wheels and stones, the hardness, strength, and character of the bond are fully as important as the hardness of the abrasive grains. Thus, in an overall consideration of abrasive hardness of loose abrasive grains, both "scratch" hardness and toughness must be considered. In naturally or artificially bonded abrasive stones, bond characteristics are a third factor, which is most important. The problem of abrasive hardness is further complicated by the inadequacies of methods of testing hardness and of expressing relative values. IN this survey of the progressive development (of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of .the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. Philadelphia Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1852, when the Pennsylvania, Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1856-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

Tin production and export from the Far East are still a long way off from the prewar figures. The Malayan Peninsula, which had a rather good start directly after the war largely because of stock piles found in Singapore and elsewhere, has since been hampered in the rehabilitation of its tin mines and dredging operations by material shortages and, more recently and more severely, by revolts and attacks of communist elements and gangster bands. These hindrances make working in the mines dangerous and form a daily threat against the valuable and highly vulnerable dredges. Contrary to the conditions in Malaya are those on the tin islands of Billiton, Banka, and Singkep-all in the Netherlands East Indies-where the Dutch have re-established peaceful relations with the population. Dutch efforts since the fall of 1945 have been rewarded by continuously increasing production, extension of production facilities, and return of moderate prosperity, complete safety, and all-out co-operation among the population ? native and Chinese ? to the benefit of all concerned.

Electrical double-layer properties of the silver sulfide-solution interface in different electrolytes and the influence the properties exert on the adsorption of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) were studied using an electrochemical titration technique. The flotation behavior of silver sulfide was observed using DAA as collector and the results were correlated with adsorption measurements. Silver and sulfide ions were identified as the potential determining ions and their adsorption densities were measured as functions of the pAg and of the ionic strength at two different pH values. The point-of-zero-charge (PZC) was observed to be at pAg 10.2, the value being independent of pH and of the nature and concentration of the electrolyte used. The surface charge of silver sulfide in these electrolytes was positive for pAg values less than 10.2 and was negative for pAg values greater than 10.2. The adsorption of amine on silver sulfide surfaces at pH 4.7 was found to be strongly dependent on the pAg. A shift in the PZC towards a lower pAg due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion towards silver sulfide surfaces. At pH 9.2 a strong adsorption of the undissociated amine molecule was indicated. The PZC shift towards a higher pAg and the adsorption of the amine was virtually independent of the interfacial electrical conditions.

Over the past ten years, analysis of the acceptability of face ventilation systems has been based on numerical criteria rather than solely a study of air flow and methane patterns in the face area. This type of analysis has become possible primarily because of the instrumentation and mathematical models developed by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). To properly use these mathematical models, large amounts of methane and airflow data must be collected in the face area during mining activities. To supplement underground testing of face ventilation systems, a full scale model of a face area was built. This model includes a full scale model continuous miner, a face ventilation system, a gas release system, and a remote methane detection system. The remote methane detection system consists of an array of twelve methane sensors located throughout the face area. Data from the sensors are transmitted to strip chart recorders. Methane, air quantity, and other data collected during a test are entered into a computer for analysis. This paper presents the data entry system, the models used for data analysis, the test results, and the application of these results to a face ventilation system.

However, I cannot pass over the tribute of the ladies so casually: Nor does it seem possible to do justice to my sentiments in addressing them collectively. I would feel more equal to the task if I could have the opportunity to talk to them singly, in doing which I know I may count upon their good sportsmanship not to compare notes. There has been some discussion between Mr. Kelly and myself as to our respective duties on this occasion: The precedents are not clear as to whether the retiring or the incoming president is expected to speak at length. Mr. Kelly's argument was that as the incoming president confines himself to promises for the future his field is a broad one and his opportunities for extending his remarks correspondingly unlimited.
