Examination was made of the distribution of tnanganese and nickel in colutrrnar dendrites of a cast low-alloy steel; more limited work was corzducted on chromium. Corresponding "segregrction ratios" were calculnted and shown to be relntivelv insensitive to cooling rate (''segregation ratio" is defined (Is the ratio of maximum to minimum concentrations within a volume whose dimensions are the order of the dendrite-arm spacing). Isoconcentratiorl curves were determined by the electron micropvobe and by rt7etallografihic studies on specimens subjected to isothermal-transformation treatments. From construction of isoconcentration curves, morphology of columnar dendrites is descvibed as intermediate between Perfect rodlike and sheetlike morphologies. The study is extended to equiaxed dendrites and it is shown that the strcture of these dendrites is sittlilar in many respects to that of columnar dendrites. On the basis of tlze sheetlike morphology of dendrites, a simple model is pvoposed for calculation of honzogenization kinetics. Results of trzatllevlatical analysis brcsed on this utzodel are given. This analysis relates residual segregation to time at homogenization temperature; it is in agreement with experiment. Calculations are given which show that even for relatively rapidly cooled material (of 1-ine dendrite-artn spacing) treatmets at 1200°C or above are necessary to achieve slgxificant Izomogenization of elenlents other than carbon itz reasonable time (e.g., rnangclnese, nickel). Conlplete homogenization of carbon is obtnined at much lowev tenlperatures (below 870°C). IN dendritic solidification of castings and ingots, solute redistribution during freezing results in mi-crosegregation of most alloy elements. The micro-segregation is such that minimum solute concentrations occur at the center of dendrite arms and maximum concentrations occur between dendrite arms. Residual segregation after subsequent therma1 processing (homogenization) depends on maximum and minimum initial concentration, on the detailed geometry of the isoconcentration surfaces within interdendritic regions, on the diffusion coefficient of the solute, and on time of thermal processing. The objective of this work was to determine, for a low-alloy steel, maximum and minimum concentrations, and the geometry of isoconcentration surfaces, primarily in order to permit calculation of homogenization kinetics. Most of the work reported was conducted on Samples from a unidirectionally solidified, fully columnar ingot. This type of ingot is made by extracting heat during solidification from one face; techniques for accomplishing this have been discussed.' Samples were taken at several locations, up to 5.75 in. from the mold chill face; the bulk of the work was performed on samples at 5.75 in. Alloy cast was, nominally, 0.4 pct C, 1.8 pct Ni, 0.8 pct Cr, 0.7 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Mo, 0.3 pct Si, and the balance iron. Brief study was also made on samples from an ingot which solidified with equiaxed grain structure. SAMPLE PREPARATION AND ANALYSIS Samples for electron-microprobe analysis were incorporated in mounts that included pieces of electrolytic nickel, chromium, and manganese, in order to normalize the intensities of these solutes in the specimens; also, a piece of electrolytic iron was included to measure the background. All specimens were polished in the usual metallographic manner. After the microprobe traces were made, the path was revealed by etching the specimens with picral. All microprobe analyses were made by point counting, integrating for 30 sec. The distance between points was fixed from 2 to 10 p, according to the precision desired in each case, the fineness of the structure, and the concentration gradient existing in a given area. (The distance was chosen 2 to 5 p near the maximum-concentration regions and 5 to 10 p near the minimum concentration.) The "take-off" angle for the A.R.L.-Model No. 21000 microprobe employed was 52.5 deg. Samples for metallographic analysis of isoconcentration curves were prepared by austenitizing at 1540°F for 20 min, quenching to the nose of the TTT curves (1200°F), heat treating isothermally at this temperature for a given time 0, and then quenching to room temperature. Due to concentration gradients existing in a dendritic structure, no transformation will take place for a given time 0 of isothermal heat treatment in the regions where the a.lloy concentration is higher than a given limit. Thus, the dendrite appears limited by an isoconcentration curve and can be made to appear to grow by varying the time of isothermal heat treatment.

A uariety of eutectic structures are formed in faceted/nonfaceted eutectics. The various structures are explained in terms of the absence or presence of small facets in the liquid groove. Regular structures are produced when, for purely geometric reasons facels cannot form. The presence of a facet in the liquid groove leads to the formation of an irregular or a cell-like complex regular structure, due to the relative immobility of the groove. A classification of eutectics was proposed by Hunt and jackson, based on the presence or absence of facets on the primary phases (the absence of facets may be predicted from the dimensionless entropy of melting2). Eutectics were divided into three groups: 1) eutectics in which both phases grow in a nonfaceted manner; 2) eutectics in which one phase grows faceted, the other nonfaceted; 3) eutectics in which both phases grow faceted. It was suggested that regular1 rodlike or lamellar structures1 should be formed in the first group, that irregular or complex regular structures1 should be formed in the' second, and that irregular structures1 should be formed in the third. Recently it has been shown that the structural classification is incomplete. Regular rodlike structures (InSb-NiSb eutectic3), or broken lamellar structure (Bi-Zn eutectic, Fig. 8), are formed in alloys of the second group when the faceted phase has a large volume fraction. Hunt and jackson' argued that regular structures could form in faceted/nonfaceted systems, but that such structures would be unstable in the presence of microfacets on the lamella of the faceting phase, because the growth rate at a point on such a facet would depend on the kinetic undercooling at the point of nu-cleation on the facet, and not on the local kinetic undercooling. In these circumstances it would not be possible to consistently balance the compositional and kinetic undercooling over a lamellar structure and thus obtain a stable isothermal interface. In this paper we discuss in detail the origin of the various structures formed in faceted/nonfaceted systems, pointing out that the most important factor promoting the formation of a regular structure is the absence of a facet in the liquid groove. 1) FACET FORMATION IN SINGLE-PHASE MATERIALS Facets form when there is an energy barrier for the addition of a new solid layer on an existing solid. When a barrier is present,2 growth proceeds by the lateral movement of steps across a crystallographic plane. The rate-controlling stage of the process occurs when the step is first formed. Hulme and Mullin6 have shown that faceting in single-phase materials can only occur when both interface curvatures are convex with respect to the solid and when the surface is tangential to the facet plane. When even one of the curvatures is concave a facet does not form because new layers of solid from adjacent regions can always feed the facet plane, Fig. 1. Growth under these conditions is then as easy as elsewhere. Similar considerations will apply to eutectic growth; consequently the shape of the faceted phase is extremely important. 2) LAMELLAR SPACING CHANGES IN EUTECTICS Jackson and Hunt7 have shown that the interface undercooling AT of a growing lamellar interface (neglecting kinetic undercooling) is related to the lamellar spacing, A, and growth velocity, v, by an expression of the form: where m, Ql, and nL are constants of the system given in Ref. 7. Eq. [I] is plotted for fixed v in Fig. 2. Jackson and Hunt postulate that a regular eutectic grows near, but to the right of the minimum in the AT vs A curve. They argue that the spacing cannot be to the left of the minimum because the interface is then unstable to fluctuations in A. It cannot grow too far to the right, because when the spacing becomes too wide an isothermal interface can no longer be maintained over the large-volume-fraction phase.7 It is argued that during any change in growth rate the lamellar spacing remains in the permitted range by the movement of lamellar faults. When the spacing is too wide, the fault, shown in Fig. 3, moves to the left; when the spacing is too narrow it moves to the right. The faults, however, have to be formed. heir formation has been shown to occur when local regions deviate considerably from the spacing defined by the lamellar When the spacing is locally too narrow (it passes to the left of the minimum, Fig. 2), pinching off of the narrow phase occurs. Various factors must be considered in an engineering evaluation of gravity-drainage reservoirs. Among these are: (1) the effect of producing rate on total oil recovery; (2) the effect upon well productivity and ultimate recovery of the pressure level maintained during the producing life of the reservoir; (3) the economic advantage of full or partial pressure maintenance; and (4) estimate of the rate of gas production and injection and the possible purchase of gas under conditions of full pressure maintenance to ascertain compressor facilities needed. All of these factors can be evaluated only when a reliable method is employed for determining reservoir performance in gravity-drainage reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to present a general method for calculating the performance of a gravity-drainage reservoir. This method is applicable for conditions of complete pressure maintenance, partial pressure maintenance and normal pressure depletion. Provisions are made to take into account variations throughout the reservoir of reservoir configuration, changes in permeability and fluid composition. Based on the method presented in this paper, an IBM 650 computer program has been developed. The past performance of an actual gravity-drainage reservoir producing under conditions of declining pressure and no gas injection was duplicated using this program. INTRODUCTION In tilted reservoirs the production of oil is influenced by drainage of oil from upstructure to downstructure locations. When this downstructure drainage of oil is sufficient to cause effective segregation of the gas and oil in a reservoir, the reservoir is usually classified as a segregation drive or gravity-drainage reservoir. (Discussion will be restricted to gravity-drainage reservoirs which have no encroachment of edge water.) The important feature in gravity-drainage reservoirs is the density difference between reservoir oil and gas. These phases tend to segregate in the reservoir with the result that in the gas cap the oil saturation is maintained at a higher level by drainage of oil from the gas-cap area. Oil can be produced from the oil zone at a low gas-oil ratio and reservoir energy is thereby conserved. The standard material balance in not adequate for predicting gravity-dramage reservoir performance because it does not take into account the difference in saturation above and below the gas-oil contact. Several authors'.' have presented methods for calculating the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs in which reservoir pressure is maintained constant by gas injection into the gas cap. Using some simplifying assumptions, these methods can be employed with a desk calculator to give acceptable results. The problem of predicting the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs under the conditions of declining reservoir pressure is many time more complex than that of constant pressure. fierefore, attempis to develop a method suitable for desk calculation have required excessively simplified assumptions. In the past several years, highspeed digital computers have become more widely available for reservoir engineering problems. These corn puters are well suited to problems such as the prediction of the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs with pressure decline. Many of the simplifying assumptions necessary for hand computation can be eliminated so that a realistic approach to the gravity-drainage process can be made. CONCEPTUAL PICTURE OF OIL MOVEMENT IN GRAVITY-DRAINAGE RESERVOIRS Before attempting to develop an analytical treatment for conditions occuring in a gravity-drainage reservoir, a concept should be formed concerning the movement of fluids in the reservoir as oil is produced. A review of the literature'.' shows that it is customary to classify gravity-drainage operations into two categories—(1) with complete pressure maintenance, and (2) with declining pressure. The same line of reasoning will be followed in presenting the concept of the movement of fluids in the reservoir because it is easier to visualize the movement of fluids under conditions of complete pressure maintenance. After discussing complete pressure maintenance, an analogy will be made between that and the case of declining pressure. It should be kept in mind throughout that the final aim for the problem of solving gravity-drainage performance with digital computers will be to develop a general program for any kind of gravity-drainage reservoir. COMPLETE PRESSURE MAINTENANCE One feature which is generally common in gravity-drainage reservoirs is a gas cap located at the top of the structure. This is shown in Fig. 1(a). THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first' began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use .of mineral substances to their benefit, but how- ever that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans mitted through instruction in the family. At first such activities must have been merely a .minor part of the making of a-living, but in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

A NUMBER probably a sizable group of person with a dominant interest in metals maintain contact with the developments in ferrous metallurgy by reading week by week, as time permits, some four or five periodical devoted in considerable part to this field. It seems possible that some of these, like ourself, find it difficult to see the net results of the development day by day in clear perspective, The impression sometimes seems blurred by the uninterrupted succession of so many accounts, or out of focus from the very impact of so many reports of new things enthusiastic, well written, and understandable though they usually are. It is at times almost as though one were trying to observe, from a fastmoving vehicle, objects all too near at hand. Or perhaps this impression is merely a manifestation of our individual hyperopia ; in which case we should content ourself with an observation that it would be more satisfactory on the whole to discuss in 1941 the metallurgical advances of 1930-35 than those of

One of the chief difficulties with which the operator of a coal washing plant has been forced to contend is the handling of the very fine coal. First he has the problem of separating the fine coal from washery water. This is usually accomplished by the use of settling cones or Dorr thickeners: in either event the separated fine coal contains a high amount (40 to 80 pct) of water and, somewhat loosely, dependent upon the size of the coal particles present, may be known as sludge or slurry. His second problem is the satisfactory further dewatering of such separated sludge and/or slurry.

The binary alloy systems, Y-Ti, Y-Zr, and Y-Hf, have been investigated throughout their entire composition regions. There is no compound formation in any of the systems, and each system is characterized by a single eutectic reaction. The eutectic compositions and temperatures are as follows: A eutectoid reaction pct Y and 870°C occurs in the Y-Ti system, whereas a peritectoid reaction,: pct Y and 880°C occurs in the Y-Zr system. Peri-tectic-type reactions at temperatures above the eutectic levels are postulated for the yttrium and hafnium transfovmations. The development of the technology of yttrium has been given considerable attention during the past few years, and studies of binary phase equilibria have, of course, taken a prominent position in this development. In many respects yttrium, in the third group of metals of the periodic table, is similar to the adjacent group of metals, titanium, zirconium, and hafnium, and the knowledge of the phase relationships of yttrium with these metals is basic to their technology. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. The metals for this investigation were supplied by the General Electric Co., Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Department. The yttrium was in the form of an arc-melted ingot, and the other metals were in the form of high-purity, iodide-Process crystal bar. Table I lists the purities of these materials. Alloy Preparation. Melting was done by conventional techniques in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace in an atmosphere of purified argon. Melting conditions for each binary system were the same. Each alloy button was inverted and remelted several times to assure homogeneity. Accurate weights of the charges and resultant alloy buttons were obtained to indicate deviations from intended compositions. No chemical analyses were obtained since melting weight losses were consistently in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 pct of the total weight. 10- or 20-g buttons for each 5.0 wt pct composition increment were melted to survey the three individual alloy systems. Additional alloys differing in composition by 1.0 or 0.1 wt pct increments were also melted to study selected regions of the systems. Metallograpllic Techniques. Standard metallo-graphic techniques were followed for mounting and rough grinding. Preliminary polishing was accomplished using 6-u diamond paste as an abrasive on a Metcloth Lap. Final polishing was done on a Microcloth-covered wheel using 1-u diamond abrasive paste. Purified kerosene was used as a lubricant for both polishing stages. • sothermal- Annealing. Alloys were sectioned for as-cast structlure examinations and then homogenized in preparation for isothermal-annealing treatments. Homo{:enization was accomplished by cold pressing the alloy buttons followed by 72-hr anneals at 1100c. The alloys were encapsulated in Vycor or quartz for the homogenization treatments or for isothermal anneals. Resistance-wound or resistance-element tube furnaces were used for the annealing treatments. The homogenized alloy buttons were cold rolled until cracking occurred or until a -in. specimen thickness was obtained. Small -in. square) specimens for the isothermal anneals were then sawed from the alloys. Each specimen was wrapped in tantalum foil before being sealed in the capsule. Temperatures during the anneals were controlled The time at temperature necessary to equilibrate the structures during the anneals was determined for each alloy system by holding triplicate specimens of alloys at a constant temperature for three different periotls. The specimens were quenched and examined microscopically to determine the number and amounts of phases present in the micro-structure as a function of time. Melting Studies. Eutectic temperatures of the three alloy systems were established from the results of incipient-melting studies conducted on as-cast alloys. Specimens to be melted were suspended on a tungsten wire inside a graphite cylinder placed in a glass vacuum chamber. An optical pyrometer was used to follow the temperature of the specimen as it was inductively heated in a high vacuum. The temperatures were corrected for emissivity losses by standardizing the pyrometer with known-melting-point metals. Accuracy of the temperature measurements is estimated to be + 10°C. The melting point of the yttrium was determined to be 1550°C by this technique. The invariant-temperature levels were also checked by an anneal-quench technique. SUCCESS in any underground mining operation is determined by accessibility of the orebody, which in turn is dependent upon maintenance of passageways to the mining zones and temporary support of the voids caused by extraction of ore. This is accomplished by one or a combination of the following methods: timbering, back-filling, pillaring, or, more recently, rock bolting. Timbering has usually been the principal means of maintaining these underground openings necessary for mining operations. Timber, however, does not prevent ground movement beyond the scope of localized sloughing, which is indicated by the gradual failing of the timber itself. Besides this, timbering has always been a costly process, and with the decline of available supplies of timber close to the mining areas, mining men have constantly sought other methods of controlling ground. Rock bolting is now replacing timbering at an ever increasing rate. Experience has proved that this form of ground support is just as applicable to blocky igneous rock as to stratified rock. Besides preventing sloughing of the walls and back of underground openings, Fig. 1, rock bolting has a stabilizing effect on the surrounding ground in much the same manner that steel reinforcing rods add to the strength of concrete structures. Further, rock bolting is flexible and may be applied to any shaped excavation, whereas timber sets are in a fixed pattern and the ground must often be changed to conform with this pattern. Rock-bolting installations were made in metal mines of the Northwest as early as 1939. An exhaust air crosscut was driven that year in one of the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The crosscut was rock-bolted and gunited at the time it was driven and is still being used to exhaust hot humid air from the 3400 level of the Belmont mine. It is interesting to note that no sloughing or caving has taken place in the 14 years it has been open. Even though these early installations of rock bolts were successful, few men recognized their potentiality until recent years, when the coal mines started their programs of mechanization and the great trend toward roof bolting began. In some areas of the Northwest stopes that previously required heavy timbering and close backfilling are now being mined by the more economical cut-and-fill and shrinkage methods. When used in conjunction with timbering, rock bolting increases the efficiency of the operation by decreasing hanging wall dilution and by making it possible to blast larger rounds. Most of the rock bolts installed to date in mines of the Northwest have been the 1-in. diam slot and wedge type, but there has been a recent trend to- ward using the 3/4-in. diam expansion shell bolt shown in Fig. 2. In addition to these commercially manufactured steel bolts, wooden bolts have been used with considerable success by the Day Mines of Wall'ace, Idaho. Installation of the slot and wedge type requires three distinct operations, with tools for each operation: 1—drilling the hole to proper diameter and depth, 2—setting the bolt, and 3—tightening the nut. Holes are drilled and bolts set with pneumatic rock drills. A number of setting or driving tools have been used successfully, but most follow the same general pattern. Usually the driving tool is designed to accommodate a short length of drill steel on one end and the rock bolt on the other end. In this manner the hammering effect of the rock drill is transmitted through the steel and driving tool to the bolt. When machines not having stop rotation are used, slippage is allowed between the driving tool and bolt or between the drill steel and driving tool. The rock bolt nuts are tightened either with pneumatic impact wrenches or with hand wrenches. Impact wrenches are desirable because they are faster and assure adequate tightness. Expansion shell bolts have the following advantages over slot and wedge rock bolts: 1—No special equipment other than a wrench is needed for their installation. 2—Installation is faster. 3—They are removable. 4—Holes need not be drilled to a specific depth as the expansion shell will anchor anywhere along the length of the hole. These advantages are offset somewhat by the lesser strength of the bolt, since expansion shell bolts are generally made from 3/4-in. diam steel as compared to 1-in. diam steel for the slot and wedge type. One manufacturer, however, is now fabricating expansion shell rock bolts from steel of high tensile strength, which gives this ¾-in. bolt a much greater strength than that of the mild steel bolt. I all of the 14 million tons of kaolin produced in Georgia through 1949 had been mined from a single deposit 20 ft thick, it would represent a mined-out area of less than 1 sq mile. This measure of depletion is in such strong contrast with the large size of the area shown in Fig. 1, from which most of the output has come, that there has developed an optimistic outlook concerning future supplies of kaolin equal in grade to that already mined. Dozens of mines are widely but not evenly distributed within this area, which consists mostly of parts of Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. There are scarcely half a dozen kaolin mines elsewhere in the state that have been appreciably productive, although the areas in which they occur may have good possibilities. Most of the efforts to find new deposits, therefore, will be confined to the area shown in Fig. 1, for it is here that the industry has established its facilities, and prospecting is encouraged by relatively numerous outcrops and opened deposits of kaolin. The Ocmulgee and Oconee rivers drain the area. They and their main tributaries have flat, swampy floodplains covered with alluvium and for the most part thickly wooded. The divides between these streams are intricately dissected by the minor tributaries, which are spring-fed in steep-walled, cirque-like heads. Gullying and under-cutting are active along the streams but are partly controlled by unusually dense vegetation. The mean altitude is about 350 ft above sea level, and locally the relief ranges up to 200 ft. The area is near the inner margin of the Coastal Plain, and is underlain by Cretaceous and Tertiary formations. Its general location is shown in black in Fig. 1. The division between the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont plateau is actually a very sinuous line, the fall line, marking the extent to which erosion has stripped the Coastal Plain sediments from the southeastward-sloping surface of the crystalline rocks of the Piedmont. Cretaceous Host Formation The kaolin deposits, which are described in the succeeding section, occur sporadically in lenslike bodies in a thick series of poorly sorted clayey sands constituting the lowermost of the Upper Cretaceous formations, the Tuscaloosa. The basis for this correlation has been reviewed by Cooke.1 The same formation has been termed the Potomac group by Ladd2 and the Middendorf formation by Smith' in reports on the kaolin deposits. In another report, Veatch4 called the formation the Tuscaloosa but correlated it with the Lower Cretaceous. The Tuscaloosa in this area consists of fine to very coarse sands, commonly cross-bedded, which contain widely different proportions of white, pink, and yellow kaolin and considerable white mica. A few of the coarser beds contain quartz grains up to 3 in. in length, with bodies of pure white kaolin of equal size that appear to have been formed by the weathering of feldspar grains in place. In the kaolin-producing area, gravel and cobbles occur mainly at the base of the formation. Fig. 2 shows the relations of the Tuscaloosa and its kaolin deposits to the adjacent formations. Its base, on the eroded surface of the crystalline rocks, dips southeastward 50 to 60 ft to the mile, according to LaMoreaux.5 The upper surface of the Tuscaloosa is also an unconformity,

Active interest in the North Central Texas area centered in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone-producing zone, near the town of Avoca, in the northeast part of Jones County. This producing horizon was discovered in 1937, in the Iron Mountain Oil Company's well No. 1 Olander, in sec. 196, B.B.B. & C. survey, at 3238 to 3250 ft. During the development of this pool, it was generally referred to as the Avoca pool. As a second pool has been discovered in the same producing zone, also near the town of Avoca, the writer has taken the liberty of changing the name of the original Avoca pool to Avoca-Olander pool. Forty producers had been drilled in the Avoca-Olander pool by the end of 1938; their initial ranged from 28 to 300 bbl. per hour. Stimulus was given to the interest in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone when the Ungren-Frazier No. 1 Griffin, in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, Jones County, found the limestone from 3225 to 3250 ft., with an initial production of 931 bbl. per day. (This new pool has been given the name of Avoca-Griffin pool, by the writer.) The best well to be completed, up to the present time, is the Bert Fields No. 1 Taylor in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, which had an initial production of 748 bbl. in 3 hours. The Owen-Snebold No. 1 McKeever in sec. 158, B.B.B. & C. survey, in northwest Shackelford County, added to the interest in the Palo Pinto limestone when it extended the Ivy pool with a well in the Palo Pinto limestone from 3145 to 3183 ft., and was estimated good for 6,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 6000 bbl. of oil per day. During 1938, Stonewall County obtained its first commercial producer when the Stonewall Oil Co. in No. 1 Parriott discovered the Palo Pinto limestone saturated from 5169 to 5176 ft. and tested 371 bbl. per day. Two new producing horizons were discovered about 2 miles east of the old Noddle Creek pool, Jones County; the first, the Humble Oil & Refining Co. No. 1 Irvin, in sec. 48, block 18, T. & P. R. R. IN. THE autumn of 1922, British Petroleums Ltd. found oil of 14° Baumé in a sand 17 ft. thick in its. No. 2 well at Wainwright, 120 miles southeast of Edmonton. This greatly encouraged drilling in the Wainwright-Irma area and this past summer several wells were started, three of which are now completed and the others still being drilled. Of the three completed, No. 4 British Petroleums contains oil; No. 3 British Petroleums gave a show of oil but so far has not given much hope, of becoming a commercial producer; and No. 1 Maple Leaf Co., as now finished, is a. gas well with a daily flow of gas of about 2,500,000 cu. ft. at a closed pressure of 700 lb. An oil sand is reported to have been encountered below the producing gas horizon in the Maple Leaf well but has not been tested. Operations on this well have been suspended for the winter. The Geological Survey of Canada this past summer undertook a geological investigation of this area with the object of defining the structures with which the oil and gas are associated. The structure underlying this portion of the plains was supposed to be a terrace with the western edge dipping into the Alberta syncline and with a monoclinal structure to the east. By accurate leveling on known geological horizons on this terrace, a number of gentle folds were located and -it is in these folds that the oil and gas are found. At the British Petroleums Nos. 2 and 4 oil wells, the western flank of the fold has a gentle dip of only a few feet to the mile to the southwest whereas the strata on the eastern flank dip to the northeast about 40 ft. in ½ mile, the strike of the fold being northwest and southeast. How far oil will be found down the gentle southwest dip is unknown but probably the productive part of the fold will not exceed 1 mile in width, and possibly less. No. 3 British Petroleums well is on the strike of the fold 1 mile southeast of the two oil wells. F. C. HENDERSCHOTT,* New York, N. Y.-I am going to take, as the text of what I shall discuss, a portion of the second paragraph of Mr. Stanford's paper. It read as follows: "The most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logical course for an engineer ;in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore, to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development, training and guiding of-all the brains in his organization. This is easier said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objectives, the maximum of productive work and the development of the individuals, who perform it;" and the last sentence of the paper; "Industry has no greater asset than an intelligent workman." The United States of America, at the outbreak of the present war, had the best equipment of any nation in the world. That statement holds not only for our -shops and our transportation systems and our stores and our farms and our homes, but it holds generally.. There was no other nation in. the world that had so good equipment as the United States. There was no other nation in the world that could be called progressive that has such poorly trained workers as the United States. Even Norway, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand ranked ahead of us. Now that is the, problem, generally speaking, and there was recognition of that fact, a growing recognition which-took form, and one of its forms was what we call the corporation school. Now obviously a corporation has no particular educational functions, but as is said in the closing sentence of Mr. Stanford's paper, or as is implied, an industrial institution is, after all, the reflection of the aggregate of the efficiency of the individuals who compose that organization. There is no way of getting away from that. If your individuals, from your president down, are efficient, if your individual has developed his brains, if he is a trained man, you have got an efficient organization, and if you haven't that condition, you have got weaknesses and your organization is no stronger than those weaknesses. I maintain that the same thing holds for a nation; .a nation is as efficient as the collective efficiency of the individuals who compose the nation, and no more so.

THE Pocahontas coal field comprises the area in Tazewell County, Va., and Mercer and McDowell Counties, W. Va., in which Nos. 3 and 4 Pocahontas seams of bituminous coal are mined. It is a mountainous region with ridges rising 300 to 1000 ft. (91 to 305m.) above the very narrow valleys and, except for some poorly kept farms along the tops of the ridges and the area occupied by the mining and coking plants and villages, is wooded throughout. First shipments were made from Pocahontas in 1883. There are now, about 100 mines, 95 per cent. of which are drift mines. At the end of 1920, approximately 298,000,000 gross tons of coal had been produced and 35,000 acres of coal mined. No. 3 seam is from 4 to 10 ft. (1.2 to 3 m.) thick, but the change is gradual and the thickness fairly uniform in any particular locality. It has a streak of bone, about 2 in. (5 cm.) thick, io which the coal adheres on both sides. In parts of the field this bone is replaced by hard slate, usually from 2 to 4 in. thick. The seam has a slate or fireclay bottom and a draw-slate top. No. 4 seam is from 65 to 80 ft. (19.8 to 24 m.) above No. 3 seam, and of minable section only in the western part of the field. It is from 3 to 8 ft. thick and has two streaks off bone, each from 1 to 2 in. thick. It has a fireclay or slate bottom and is overlaid by from 4 to 24 in. of a laminated coal and slate, locally termed "black rash," which is separated from the coal seam by about 3 in. of slate. This "black rash" averages about 25 per cent. ash, but contains some clean coal. The coal in both seams is quite soft. Cleavage sufficiently well defined to exert an influence on the mining is rare. Overlying strata are slates, shales, and sandstones, the sandstones predominating, extending from .30 to 1000 ft. above No. 3 seam. The strata directly above the. draw slate of No. 3 seam, or "black rash" of No., 4 seam, and up to the first sandstone are usually slates or shales, about 10 ft. thick over the
