The only essential difference among the three methods of collecting the precious metals from their low-grade ores by fusion is comprised in the nature of the vehicle in which those metals are concentrated. If lead- or coppper-ores are used, the processes are respectively lead- or copper-smelting; but when the sulphide of iron forms the matrix in which the gold and silver are collected, the process is known as pyritic smelting. The latter method presents rarely any advantages when lead- or copper-ores are available at rates which permit profitable treatment. Pyritic silver-smelting, defined by Percy as " the smelting of silver-ores, which are either free from lead or do not contain it in sufficient quantity to collect the silver, in conjunction with pyrites, in order to produce a regulus in which the silver may be concentrated," is not, as the name would imply, confined to ores of this metal alone, but embraces auriferous silver-ores, or even gold-ores simple. This method of collecting the precious metals from lowgrade dry ores, employed at Freiberg by Barthel Kohler in 1585, does not appear, up to the present, to have been introduced into this country on a working scale. And yet the possibility of getting rid in a single operation of all the earthy or siliceous gangue of a lowgrade ore and concentrating the precious metals in a matte without loss of lead (which includes gold and silver) by slagging, or volatilization, at the same time producing a highly siliceous slag, very nearly if not quite as clean as is usual in lead-smelting, certainly commends itself. EVE have studied the gold-aluminum system by X-ray diffraction and by the microscope over the entire range of composition for temperatures between 300° and 500° C. Results obtained are shown in Fig. 1, com-bined with the work of Heycock and Neville1 at higher temperatures. The diagram differs in important details from that given by Hansen2 in his critical compilation of the literature of binary alloy systems. This work was, undertaken both because of the intrinsic value of a knowledge of the phase diagram of this system and because of the need of theoretical metallurgy for precise and accurate data, particularly X-ray diffraction data. Systematic studies of equilibrium diagrams, particularly by Hume-Rothery,3 have shown regularities that yield a certain insight into the nature of alloying forces. It has been shown, for example, that solid solubility depends on the concentration of free electrons in the alloy, on the relative radii of solvent and solute atones, on the forces of attraction between atoms, and on the relative stability of intermediate phases. The well-known Hume-Rothery rule states that the crystal structures and compositions of many intermediate phases depend on the electron-to-atom ratio. This has been confirmed and extended by wave mechanical calculations.4 A knowledge of the forces between atoms in alloys, even an imperfectly developed empirical one, should be a valuable guide in the preparation of technological alloys of desirable properties. Furthermore, such informa-tion is basic in such problems as rate of diffusion, age-hardening, phase transformations, and others. FOR the past three years, the senior writer has carried out, with inter-ruptions, a series of investigations into the characteristics of prospecting seismographs of a wide variety of construction. Early in 1932, a com-plete equipment was developed for both refraction and reflection observa-tions; its first function being, however, the application in reflection shooting. The performance of the equipment proved to be highly satis-factory in a series of field tests' which were carried out by the junior writer, whose services were loaned to the Colorado School of Mines by courtesy of the Plains Exploration Co. in Denver. The various problems that were encountered in the construction of the equipment, in its application in the field, and in the interpretation of the results, are fully treated in Publication 47 of the Department of Geophysics of the Colorado School of Mines. Its first part deals with the various problems encountered in the design of the instruments, and presents a discussion of such topics as the free and forced oscillations of damped and undamped mechanical seismographs, the action of oscil-lographic recording instruments and amplifiers, the characteristics of electromagnetic seismographs, and the requirements of damping, natural frequencies and static magnification for the pickups, amplifiers and oscillographs used in refraction and reflection seismographs. Further-more, a detailed discussion of the various methods of static and dynamic tests of seismic receivers, and a description of the reflection equipment developed at the School of Mines is presented. Unfortunately, a delay has occurred in the publication of the first part of this investigation concerning the instrument problems. There-fore, the second part, dealing with the field problems, is herewith pre-sented first.

ComMercial steel sheet is prepared by a combination of hot and cold rolling and annealing. This treatment usually results in more or less pronounced anisotropy. The anisotropy may manifest itself both as preferred orientation and in the manner in which impurities, segregations, and the like, are aligned in the sheet. The type of preferred orientation and the organization of impurities or segregations may affect the elastic moduli, the yield strength, the tensile strength, and almost always the amount of ductility in different directions. In any case, the most important directions concerned in the anisotropy are along the rolling direction, along the width direction, and along the thickness direction. Considerable data exist on the anisot-ropy of sheet steel as demonstrated by conventional tensile tests; however, few attempts have been made to measure the constants of plastic anisotropy and use them to describe the flow of anisotropic sheet under combined stresses. In this paper, evidence is presented indicating that plastic flow in anisotropic sheet can be described by the shear-strain energy flow theory provided that the anisotropy is properly taken into account. Materials Used in the Investigation Table I lists the sheet materials used in this investigation and describes the condition in which materials were tested. Direction, of Tests and Test Methods Two types of tests were run—tensile tests and hydraulic-bulge tests. Characteristic parameters of anisotropy were determined from the tension tests by methods which will be described later. THE process of comminution by grinding is properly classified as an art, rather than as a science. Like most other operations concerned in ore dressing, or in the treat-ment of nonmetallic minerals, the mathe-matical relationships of rock breaking are still obscure, and much disputed. If some basic formula exists, comparable for in-stance to E = RI in electricity, it has not yet been placed in common use. The absence of such a comprehensive mathe-matical background undoubtedly is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations, as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work. On the other hand, the mathematical immaturity of the process constitutes an opportunity for a real contribution on the part of those who enjoy mental pioneering. Some of the statements made in any such exploratory work may be little more than opinions, and it is to be expected that some will later be proved untrue; but such an evolutionary development is necessary if we are ever to arrive at the fundamental laws, the discovery of which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science. The most significant principle of com-minution that we possess is probably Rittinger's law, which states that the work done in crushing or grinding is proportional to the area of the new surface produced. There is an alternative theory, known as Kick's law, which formerly was preferred to Rittinger's but which now is rather dis-credited. According to Kick, the work done in comminution is proportional to the volume, or weight, of the pieces broken, or to the cube of their diameters, while accord-ing to Rittinger it is proportional to the square of the diameters.

MINING occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, but its relative contribution has increased greatly during the post- war period. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value I of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, but by 1936 the pro- portion had risen steadily to 12.76 per cent. Mining felt the depression, hut unlike agriculture, which is still ' sorely stricken, it has passed from early convalescence to complete recovery. For each of the last two years new high records were established for the industry as a whole and for the quantity of most metals produced. Mining has had a notable effect on - the growth of the power industry in Canada. Water power has been developed in the same or adjacent areas wherever mining camps have been 1 established, with few exceptions. Consumption of electrical energy by the mining industry gained 72 per cent within a decade, rising from 1604 million kw.-hr. in 1926 to 2754 in 1935. Practical and statistical considerations concerned with the sampling, sample preparation and chemical analysis of precious metal ores are reviewed. The principal requirements related with the characteristics of sample cutter, sample preparation, equipment and methods are discussed. The main errors introduced in the different stages of the sampling systems are defined. The application of statistical techniques to evaluate these errors to determine the ore grade variation and to design the number of increments needed to get an accurate assay are presented. Finally, results obtained with the application of this method to gold and silver ores are analyzed and some recommendations are given.

INCREASED metal consumption throughout the world in the past three years has brought greater activity in the concentrators and mills that treat the ores.' Comparatively low prices have made greater economies necessary, with a continuing search for more efficient flow sheets, equipment, processes, and reagents. Comminution GRINDING has long been too ex- pensive and even any small increment of saving has been eagerly sought. Although not recently new the use of rod mills to cover the gap between intermediate crushing and coarse grinding has made further headway. They eliminate dusting and the closed- circuit operation of fine crushers, either roll or Symons cone, and the rod-mill product is suitable for secondary mills which can be operated with smaller balls and iron liners instead of coarse balls and steel liners. The newer practice is radically different from the older application of rod mills where they at- tempted to use them instead of ball mills for fine grinders. For that purpose they were not well adapted, as they do not have sufficient grinding surface available per cubic foot of mill volume.

BLIZKRIEG tactics in the present war have consumed metals on such a profligate scale that some of the best-laid procurement plans for civilian and military needs of even a year ago seem in retrospect incredibly meager. Conservation of raw materials has reached an all-time climax in Germany, where metals are worth more than human life and throwing away an empty toothpaste tube may be legally punished by death. Even the United States and the British Empire, proud masters of nine tenths of the world?s known mineral reserves and processing plants, are being driven to metals and feverishly expanding production facilities that not long ago were deemed overbuilt. After the war is over and inevitable postwar readjustments are completed, it is reasonable to expect that purchasing power ? or at least the ability to procure the comforts and luxuries of life ? will be distributed among vastly larger population than ever before, accelerating the rising trend in demand for industrial raw materials in ever greater quantity and variety.

THE 142D MEETING of the Institute is rapidly shaping up with splendid prospects of a strong technical program and the lighter side of this annual occasion amply provided for. The date is February 20 to 23. The technical sessions will be held in the Engineering Societies building; the smoker-dinner, the informal dance, and the annual reception and dinner, at the Commodore Hotel, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The news to date on the technical side is as follows: Mining Methods-Subsidence The Mining Methods Committee has prepared an interesting program which will be divided into two sessions to be held early in the week. At the first there will be papers on mining methods and development, including a description of the "Sinking and Equipment of No. 2 Shaft at Minas de Matahambre," by Dudley D. Homer and R. H. Cromwell. They describe in considerable detail the equipment used and the practice followed in sinking this important shaft, giving detailed costs and performance figures. Hoist¬ing ?arrangements and mining practice at the "Red Ore Mines of the Woodward Iron Co. at Bessemer, Ala.," are described by Tenny C. DeSollar, superintendent of mines, in a second paper. At this session of the Mining Methods Committee, H. M. Roche and R. E. Crockett, of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite Mining and Milling Methods, will present their paper, "Iron Ore Mining at the Scrub Oak Mine." This mine is in the highlands of New Jersey about 40 miles west of New York City. Prof. Robert K. Warner of Yale University will present a paper on "The Selection of a Mining System," which should have an interesting discussion. Pierre R. Hines, of Portland, Ore., will present, with stereopticon slides, his paper on "The Owyhee Tunnels, U. S. Reclamation Project, Owyhee, Oregon," describing one of the recent irrigation undertakings.

IN the latitude of Lima, the broad uplifted block that forms the Andes is made up of a complex sequence of folded and faulted sediments and volcanics, broken by large and small bodies of granitic rocks and porphyries with which the principal mineral deposits are closely associated in both time and space. The intrusives are a final episode in the geologic history as revealed by the consolidated rocks, for after their emplacement and after the formation of the primary ore deposits in and about them the record is simply one of long continued erosion and uplift.

WITH the exhaustion of the sections of iron ore bodies amenable to opencut mining the iron ore miners raise the question: "How can we mine the extensions of these ore bodies in depth with the same costs as obtained in opencut work?" This question brings to the fore the relationship between mineral exploration and research on mining procedures. The iron miners must either find new de? posits amenable to their known methods of mining or develop new mining methods for deep deposits. It is understood that the oil companies will spend $30,000,000 next year in the search for new oil fields. How much the metal mining companies will spend in the search for new ore bodies is unknown, but without doubt the amount will run into several millions of dollars. If the mining companies that concern themselves with metals, nonmetallics, and fuels will set aside a substantial sum for fundamental and applied research in mining methods, they can not only lower their costs but increase their reserves thereby. Any increases in mining efficiency automatically result in increased ore reserves at no cost.

FIFTY years ago the Utah Copper enterprise at Bingham was just getting under way. An epic in metal mining was in the making. Throughout the West the bonanza deposits were approaching exhaustion and most ore still went direct to smelter. But concentrators were shortly to be constructed for treating milling grade ores, and most important, the pilot plant for the Utah Copper enterprise was being built that year at the mouth of Bingham Canyon. The same decade was to see development at the Inspiration mine in Arizona of the most important new mining method for 50 years to come—undercut block caving. Although the average grade of ore being mined has been declining for 50 years, and wage rates and prices of supplies have been greatly increased, the mining industry has continued to grow and to prosper. Technology has advanced to a point where minerals can be mined under the most severe conditions. The hardest rock can be drilled and broken and the heaviest ground handled. Large or small, an ore-body can be mined successfully, at any desired rate of production. It is possible to pump great volumes of water and to ventilate the most extensive workings; air conditioning has made practicable the mining of ore where the rock temperatures are beyond those that can be borne by man. Mining today in the U. S. is a huge earth-moving operation. In 1953 nearly 2 billion tons of material were mined for direct use or for processing. Stripping at open-cut mines totaled about 1.7 billion cu yd. Table I gives relative tonnages of the branches of the mineral industry in 1953. In addition to the solid materials moved, 350 million tons of petroleum and 340,000 tons of gas were produced in 1953. Fifteen million tons of salt and 5 million tons of liquid sulphur were pumped from wells. An appreciable amount of copper was recovered by leaching old mine workings and dumps. Total value of minerals produced in 1953 was $14.4 billion: oil and gas $7.6 billion, coal $2.6 billion, nonmetallics $2.4 billion, and metals $1.8 billion. Formidable problems face some branches of the industry today, especially pertaining to increased output tons per manshift. The time has come when these problems should be reappraised. With current wage rates, the industry no longer can afford to pay men to do manual labor. It should be recognized, also, that the miner is a skilled worker; efforts to promote the dignity of his calling and his pride of accomplishment have yielded beneficial results. Mineral deposits occur under widely varying conditions. In most instances the degree of support needed by the roof and walls is the deciding factor in selection of an underground mining method. The degree of support needed, in turn, is governed by natural physical characteristics of the ore and its enclosing rocks. Mine operators, of course, learn to judge ground by observation, and an experienced mine boss generally can anticipate what will happen following any given mining operation. A more scientific approach, however, would be advantageous in most cases. More should be known about the strength of the ore and the enclosing rocks, more about stresses set up in the ground when ore is removed, and more about the mechanics of moving ground. Better understanding would work both ways: first, favorable rock conditions could be fully utilized for more efficient mining, and second, hazards of rock falls could be minimized, loss of ore in mining reduced, and expenses caused by ground pressures and subsidence lowered. In general, mining comprises breaking the ore or rock in place, supporting the mine workings, and transporting the ore to the surface. This latter is a materials handling problem. Ventilation, of course, must be provided, and the mines must be kept free of water. Development work at some places is the most important cost item in extracting ore. Drilling and blasting remain the usual practice for breaking ore or rock from place except, of course, at block-caving mines. The drilling and blasting practice at a mine must fit the mining method. INTRODUCTION. THE following general survey of the character and present condition of the silver-mines of Mexico, though not offered as a detailed treatise, has been prepared with care, is believed to he generally up-to-date, and is offered as a summary which may be found useful by mining engineers. Mexico has ranked for several centuries first among the silver-producing countries. It is now second as copper-producer, and seventh as gold-producer, with a fast-increasing output every year. The total amount of capital invested in its mining- and smelting-works is more than $250,000,000, while the yearly metallic production is $160,000,000. There are more than 20,000 recorded mining properties. The silver-mines of Mexico represent deposits of three principal classes: (1) veins and stock-works in eruptive rocks; (2) fissure-veins crossing the crystalline schists, granite, diorite, etc. ; and (3) veins and replacement-deposits in limestone. The true fissure-veins in some districts contain (in value) more gold than silver. In other deposits, the silver is decreasing in depth, leaving galena and zinc-blende as the principal ores.

D. A. Dahlstrom—Mr. Falconer has done an admirable job of proving the adaptability of the cyclone to the beneficiation of a very difficult size range in the preparation of coal. The addition of the cyclone to other coarser size methods makes it economically feasible for the coal operator to rigorously control his marketed products at a high and uniform quality level down to the 48 and 100-mesh size. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that by utilizing the cyclone as a deslimer or classifier the —3 200-mesh fraction, usually containing large percentages of undesirable material, can also be quickly and cheaply removed from the clean coal. Advantages of such a step are several: (1) Reduction of ash content, especially where clays and slimes are serious. (2) lower moisture content of the final coal. (3) easier mechanical and thermal de-watering of the fine coal due to higher cake and bed permeabilities. The author has indicated that adjustable control means should be installed on the cyclone operating on a heavy-media slurry. This also holds true for the cyclone acting as classifier, deslimer or preliminary dewatering agent and is worthy of special emphasis. Such controls, while not necessarily automatic, must be simple, rapidly adjustable, and require a minimum of attention. Three methods available to the operator are (1) throttling valve on the feed line, (2) back pressure valve on the overflow, and (3) adjustable diameter underflow nozzles. The first two, while fulfilling the specifications, suffer the disadvantage of restricting capacity if severe throttling is necessary. The third method has little effect on capacity and easily maintains an underflow of correct moisture content. Several designs are possible, but two find the widest application. The first was developed by Robert Piros of The Truax-Traer Coal Co. and uses a simple casting containing two holders for underflow nozzles which can be rotated about an axis parallel to the cyclone centerline. These holders retain the underflow nozzle flush with the conical section walls. When a change in nozzle diameter is required, the new size is placed in the spare holder and rotated into place. A second design utilizes a soft rubber cylindrical tube which is compressed or released from three sides, causing the inner diameter of the tube to decrease or increase. T HE chairman of the Mines Committee of the A. 1: E. E. for 1920-21 has had the honor of being also the chairman of a similar committee, the Mine Equipment Committee, of the A. I. M. E. It has been the endeavor during the past year to have the two committees work together since the object of these committees is very much the same. A meeting of the committees was held in Chicago in November of 1920, at which time it was decided that one of the best ways to work together would be to foster joint meetings of the local sections of the A. I. E. E. and A. I. M. E. By these meetings, it was hoped that various engineers in the local sections interested in mining subjects could be brought together and not only become better acquainted but be greatly benefited by the interchange of ideas and by the discussion of papers presented on mining subjects.

THIS article aims to clarify the use of some terms often occurring in writings on iron and -steel, and also to suggest several new short abbreviated names for some of the things related to the subject which now are indicated by phrases. Crude or Crude Iron The name crude or crude iron is recommended for the iron produced from ore by the blast furnace. When necessary it can be specified as pig iron when in the form of pigs (usually cold), or as molten iron, commonly called hot metal to distinguish it from cold iron in pigs. The product of a direct process of making wrought or malleable iron from ore is not included.
