The discovery of a Carlin-type gold deposit at Cortez, Nevada, in 1966 can be attributed directly to the use of geochemical exploration techniques. Most mineral deposits owe their discovery to geologic concepts, geologic analysis, and luck, but at Cortez, geochemistry as an exploration tool played the clearly dominant role in discovery. Of course, the economic significance of the discovery had to be determined by exploration and development drilling. The story of the discovery began in 1959 when field work was initiated on a new project, "Geochemical Halos Utah and Nevada," by R.L. Erickson and A. P. Marranzino for the US Geological Survey. The Cortez district was selected for geochemical work because it was an area with good geologic control where we could address the problem of how to prospect in barren outcrops for concealed ore deposits in potentially favorable structures (buried thrust zones) or favorable host rocks in the subsurface. Geologic mapping of the Cortez 15-min quadrangle, just being completed by Gilluly and Masursky (1965), showed that the quadrangle contained excellent exposures of both the upper and lower plates of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault, a major structural feature of north-central Nevada. Roberts (1960) had noted that a number of mining districts were associated with windows in the thrust. In 1959, Erickson and Marranzino did some reconnaissance rock sampling and spring-water sampling in the siliceous clastic rocks of the upper plate of the thrust. Results of this reconnaissance prompted a full-scale sampling program in 1960 in the upper plate rocks on the west flank of the Cortez window. Results of the investigation showed that anomalously high concentrations of metals occur in the upper plate rocks, and further, that the distribution of metals is fault controlled and shows a pronounced zoning pattern (central copper zone; intermediate zinc, copper, and lead zone; and outer arsenic zone). The anomalies were interpreted as primary leakage halos that originated from metal occurrences in the thrust zone or in carbonate rocks below the thrust and moved upward along normal faults that cut both upper and lower plate rocks. Erickson gave a talk about these anomalies in the summer of 1961 to the local AIME Section in Reno, Nevada; two short reports were published that year-" Geochemical Anomalies in the Upper Plate of the Roberts Thrust Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson et al., 1961) and "Hydrogeochemical Anomalies in Four Mile Canyon Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson and Marranzino, 1961). These releases prompted blanket staking in the area by several small companies. In 1963, geologic and geochemical mapping were started by the USGS in the lower plate carbonate rocks of the Cortez window west of the quartz monzonite stock at Mount Tenabo and north of the old townsite of Cortez. The results of the work showed anomalously high concentrations of arsenic, antimony, and tungsten in jasperoid, fracture filling, and shear zones in Silurian and Devonian carbonate rocks. The anomalous area was about 1.6 km (I mile) long and 300 m (1000 ft) wide. A brief report, "Geochemical Anomalies in the Lower Plate of the Roberts Thrust Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson et al., 1964a), was published in 1964. During this same time period, 1959-1964, several exploration or mining companies were active in the general area (chiefly mapping geology and acquiring property). In 1964, American Exploration and Mining Company (Amex) concluded that the entire Cortez district was worthy of an extensive exploration effort involving drilling as well as geologic, geophysical, and geochemical studies. To carry out the program, Amex formed a joint venture group with the Bunker Hill Company, Vernon Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources. Their early efforts were directed to the upper plate rocks and to the lower levels of the old Cortez silver mine. The group also drilled some shallow rotary assessment holes adjacent to the area of the arsenic, antimony, tungsten anomaly in lower plate carbonate rocks described in Erickson et al. (1964a). Assay results from these holes offered little or no encouragement to the joint venture group. Splits of these drill samples were made available to the USGS. Heat-resistant alloys of the higher nickel and chromium ranges have been empirically developed through the practical experience of the past two decades to a position of significant industrial importance. Few quantitative metallurgical data have been published, however, that could be related directly to engineering specifications and design. Inadequate information led to the inauguration, in 1934, of a research directed toward a better understanding of the properties and performance of these steels at temperatures between 1400° and 2000°F. Investigation was concentrated upon the 26 per cent Cr:I2 per cent Ni type, which owes its extensive application to an excellent combination of economy, strength and surface stability at elevated temperatures. The requirements of the oil-refining industry have been prominent in influencing the scope and evolution of the program. Creep strength at the maximum allowable deformation ranges has been employed to evaluate the merits of these alloys. Permissible elongation rates vary from 1.0 per cent in one million hours for turbine blades to I .o per cent in ten thousand hours for tube supports and heating-furnace equipment. Throughout this paper, the limiting creep stress (L.C.S.) for a given temperature has been defined as the stress that will produce a uniform elongation rate (stage 11) of one per cent in ten thousand hours as extrapolated from rates per hour for tests of less than two thousand hours duration. Certain current specifications require a minimum L.C.S. of 1600 lb. per sq. in. at I800°F., of 3600 lb. per sq. in. at 1400°F., and include a tensile acceptance test at room temperature, after aging for 24 hr. at 1400°F., as a measure of embrittlement in service. An elongation of 4 per cent is considered satisfactory for general use, while a minimum of 9 per cent is prescribed on occasion. Many differences of opinion concerning the properties and performance of these alloys appear to result from their sensitivity to unappreciated variations of chemical analyses which, for example, may change their L.C.S. from 3500 to 350 lb. per sq. in. at 1800°F. Within broad chemical limits, it is possible to balance the six or more important elements present to attain desirable properties with a number of different combinations. One method for adjusting the composition has been described under the sponsorship of the Alloy Casting Institute,' in which, by maintaining a substantially austenitic* alloy, optimum creep strength and minimum tendency to embrittle after aging are expected. Unless, however, the limits are undesirably close, it has not been possible to ensure a moderate range of strength and of ductility by any chemical specification alone. There is a definite need

Studies have been conducted on The properties of many deep well cementing compositions to determine their Strength behavior over curing periods to 180 days at elevated tem-peratures and 3,000 psi pressure. This pressure results in essentially the .vat, compressive strength as that obtained with much higher pressures in ac-cordance with the findings of an API subcommittee ' These different compositions include API C1asses A, E, and F cements containig additives such as retarders, berrtorlite, heavy weight materials and pozzolans. All compositions except mixtures of Poz-zolrrrts and hydrated lime show from mild to severe degrees of strength lass over a temperature rang from -730 to 320" F after setting. Pozzolatl-time compositions actually gain in strength with time at these high temperatures. Other chemical find physical properties evaluated to observe their inter-relation.ship with Strength loss show very little correlation except in per-meability. As retrogression in strength increases, the permeability of set cement increases. X-ray difraction patterns on the set products indicate the formation of certain compounds having little or no strength value in those cementing compositions where strength loss was more severe. INTRODUCTION As a result of the growing trend toward deep well completions, a study has been made on the properties of the various cementing slurries presently in use at elevated temperatures and pressure. The strength of these compositions is of prime importance in selecting the most suitable material for use at high temperatures, to determine WOC time and the proper time to perforate with a minimum of shattering. Of primary interest in this investigation was the strength behavior of various compositions currently in use, and the effect of additives on cement after long periods of curing under severe conditions. Earlier investigators have pointed out that the strength of some cements will increase with increasing curing temperature to about 220 to 340" F, but at higher temperatures a loss in strength occurs at extended time intervals. Studies by the API Mid-Continent District Study Committee on Oil Well Cements' outlined a testing procedure whereby field conditions of temperature and pressure could be simulated in the laboratory.' It was observed that retarded cements undergo changes at elevated temperatures and some lose as much as 50 per cent of their early strength when cured at high temperatures. The scope of these tests was limited to curing periods of 1 to 28 days; additives were not covered in this study. Saunders and Walker' found that the use of additives influenced the strength behavior of cements at high temperatures, but studies were conducted only to a seven-day curing period. Ludwig and Pence' conducted an investigation of two types of cements under elevated pressures and temperatures in an effort to explain the causes of this loss in strength phenomenon. It was observed that with retrogression in strength there were other physical and chemical changes which took place as the cement aged. Today there are a number of cementing compositions available for use at well depths below 10,000 ft. Since all these earlier investigations were limited in curing time as well as the number and type of compositions studied, it was believed that a more extensive study should be conducted on the properties of cements at elevated temperatures, and this work should include those compositions actually in general field use at this time.

The technology of nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder has been successfully applied to the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. Nickel was added by infiltration in a zinc solution followed by evaporation of the solvent. After sintering one hour at 1300°C density 95 pct of theoretical and transverse rupture strength of 74,000 psi were obtained. Shrinkage was found to be anisotropic and the mechanism of densification was comparable to that found in the nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder. 1 HE use of a plasma spray gun for the fabrication of massive tungsten parts has become increasingly interesting. Applications now exist where a deposit in the as-sprayed condition is satisfactory. However, these deposits are generally characterized by a lamellar anisotropic microstructure containing 15 pct porosity of which, typically, two-thirds is open to the surface. Mechanically, the as-sprayed deposits fail at relatively low stress levels with a biscuit-like fracture. As a result of these problems the possibility of improving structure and strength by sintering treatments subsequent to spraying is particularly attractive. Preferably this sintering treatment should be adaptable to large bodies of sprayed metal. The similarity between the as-sprayed tungsten structure and that of a powder compact suggests that the relatively low-temperature activated sintering technique1 might be profitably employed in the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. It was the purpose of the present investigation to develop a technique for introducing the nickel-activating agent into the sprayed structure, to evaluate the amount and mechanism of densification obtained as a function of time and temperature, and to obtain an indication of the relative strength before and after sintering. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Powder used for spraying was purchased from the Wah Chang Corp. in several size fractions ranging from an average size of 4 to 150 . These powders were sized further for an explicit study of the influence of average feed size on densification. All powders were dried at 200°C before use. Spraying was accomplished with a Plasma Flame unit manufactured by Thermal Dynamics Corp. Several modifications of the unit were helpful in conducting the investigation. A variable speed auger feed mechanism coupled with the carrier gas mecha nism facilitated the use of fine particle sizes. A coil of ten turns of copper tubing in series with the arc power and concentrically would around the nozzle improved nozzle life and extended the range of operating currents available. The function of the auxiliary coil was to cause the arc to spin and to prevent impingement at only one point in the nozzle. Normally air sprayed deposits were made with an arc maintained at 400 amp at 50 to 70 v. The arc was blown by a gas mixture containing from 5 pct H, 95 pct N for the finest powder feed sizes ranging to 20 pct H, 80 pct N for the coarsest size. The flow rate was maintained at 100 cu ft per hr NTP through a nozzle of 0.25 in. ID. When apraying in air, the powder stream was directed toward an aluminum substrate for ease of mechanical removal of the deposit. The substrate was cooled by diverting the plasma flame with an air jet, and a second jet was directed on the deposit surface. In this configuration a gun-to-work distance of 2 to 3 in. was found to be satisfactory. Fig. 1 represents a typical as-sprayed deposit micro-structure. Laboratory studies of protective atmosphere spraying were carried out in cylindrical chamber 8 in. in diam by 18 in. in length. In operating the nozzle attached to such a chamber, particular care was required to avoid nozzle burn out due to reduced gas flow. The structure and density of the chamber sprayed deposits varied over wide ranges depending on substrate temperature. For the purposes of this investigation, flat deposits were made approximately 2 in. sq by 3/8 in. thick. From these deposits individual samples were cut an ground to a rectangular shape typically 1 1/2 in. by 1/8 in. sq such that the long dimension was perpendicular to the spraying direction. For the study of shrinkage anisotropy deposits up to one inch thick were produced. From these, rectangular samples were cut having a longer dimension parallel to the spraying axis. Prior to the addition of activating agent, the samples were deoxidized in hydrogen at 800°C for 20 min. No detectable dimensional or microstructural change was observed after this treatment. A DISLOCATION mechanism has been described by Cottrell' by which metals can yield locally, I. form Liiders bands, giving rise to a characteristic stress-strain curve with a sharp yield point and appreciable strain at constant or decreasing stress. It is undoubtedly the best mechanism that has been suggested to date." In its present development, however, the dislocation mechanism provides a more satisfying explanation for the sharp yield point than for the extensive localized flow occurring at the lower yield stress. The primary objective in this paper is to extend the dislocation mechanism to account for localized cataclysmic flow by a dislocation collision process and to give experimental evidence to support such a process. Only the yielding of iron containing carbon -will be discussed, although other metal-solute systems are known to behave similarly. Cottrell Mechanism In brief, Cottrell explains the yield point in the following way: The dislocations in iron which must propagate to produce slip usually lie at the center of local concentrations of carbon atoms, since segregation about these dislocatlons relieves some of the local stress resulting from them. A dislocation surrounded by a "cloud" of carbon atoms is thus anchored, and a higher stress is required to set it in motion than to move a free dislocation. Considering all available dislocatlons to be anchored in this fashion, the iron exhibits a yield point when the first dialocations break free and move through the lattice causing slip. This first breaking away of a dislocation enables other dislocations to break loose by "interaction" and the process becomes a cataclysm producing local deformation or Luders bands. The yield point in the stress-strain diagram for iron is absent in freshly deformed material, but returns gradually with time; the phenomenon is one aspect of what is called strain aging. The rate at which the yield point returns following straining depends on the temperature of aging. According to Cottrell the rate of return of the yield point in strained iron is limited by the rate of diffusion of carbon at the aging temperature, the mechanism is onr: of reforming the solute atmospheres around carbon-free dislocations that had stopped moving coincident with the removal of stress. If the specimen is retested immediately after straining and unloading, carbon will not have had time to diffuse to, and re-anchor, dislocations and the yield point will not occur. The carbon diffusion limitation for the rate of strain aging apparently applies if the criterion for strain aging is either the change in hardness" or the change in electrical resistance" of the strained speci- men with aging time. The possibility exists, however, that the yield point actually returns to strained iron at some rate other than that deduced from hardness or electrical resistance data. Therefore, as a preliminary experiment, the rate of yield point return in a rimmed sheet steel strained 6 pct in tension was measured at 27°, 77°, and 100°C. A plot of yield-point elongation for each of these temperatures against aging time appears in Fig. 1. The aging process is described by curves which rise to a plateau value of elongation that seems independent of temperature, but at a rate that depends on temperature. Very long times lead to a further rise in the yield-point elongation above the plateau value. However, if the later increase in yield-point elongation is ignored and the log of the time to reach half the plateau value of elongation is plotted against 1/T, a straight line results for which an activation energy of about 25 kcal pel- mol may be assigned. Within the accuracy of this sort of experiment this is approximately the activation energy for the diffusion of carbon in iron (20 kcal per mol), and the carbon diffusion limitation suggested for the yield-point return on strain aging is valid. The Cottrell mechanism thus explains in a qualitative manner the occurrence of a yield point in iron and its return with strain aging. It fails, however, to explain some of the other experimental observations that have been made of the yielding behavior of iron. For example, it is known that the yield point in iron becomes less pronounced with increasing grain size. Annealed single crystals of iron have very small yield-point elongations .if indeed they have any,' compared to a polycrystalline steel. If the only requirement for a yield point is that the dislocations in the lattice of the annealed. material be anchored by carbon atoms, the difference in the behavior of single crystals and polycrystals is not explained. That a dislocation mechanism may be entirely consistent with little or no yield point in an annealed single crystal will become apparent later when dislocation interaction is discussed. Serrated plastic flow in stable austenitic alloys based on Fe/Ni has been shown to be related to the presence of carbon and/or chromium in the systems. Strength peaks and plateaus in the serrated-flow temperature region for a commercial alloy correlate with an increased dislocation content, arising, presumably, from enhanced multiplication as a result of a strong interaction between dislocations and solute atoms. The data generally support a mechanism controlled by migration of vacancies, with the energy for vacancy motion being modified by the presence of chromium. Chromium atom -dislocation interaction is responsible for effects above 500°C, whereas the defect interacting with dislocations between 200" and 500°C is suggested to be a carbon-vacancy Pair. ThE phenomenon of jerky flow, serrated flow, or the Portevin-le Chatelier (P-C) effect in austenitic stainless steels is usually attributed to substitutional at1,2 mospheres1,2 or to precipitates&apos;-4 which form at dislocations during plastic deformation. On the other hand, evidence exists which supports a direct inter-stitial-dislocation interaction mechanism for serrated flow in fcc Ni-C,5,6 Ni-H7-9 and in nickel-austenites containing carbon." The present work consists in a study of serrated plastic flow in stable austenitic al-loys. The effects of carbon and of chromium were investigated separately, and a commercial stainless steel with different levels of interstitial impurity concentration was studied in an attempt to delineate the combined effects of the alloying elements. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES a) Materials and Fabrication. A commercial AISI 330 stainless steel and several specially prepared aus-tenitic alloys have been studied. The experimental alloys were prepared by arc melting the constituents under purified argon. Analyses of the materials are given in Table I. The commercial alloy was obtained as 5/8 in. bar stock and rolled to 0.092 in. sq, with several intermediate anneals. At this stage some of the material was annealed in Pd-purified hydrogen at 1100°C to establish different levels of interstitial content. All other heat treatments were in vacuum (10-5 torr). The "pure" alloy ingots were swaged to 0.120-in. rod and annealed in Pd-purified hydrogen at 1100°C. The analyses for these conditions are also contained in Table I. Sonon. were obtained by either swaging or cold drawing. The test results did not vary with these techniques. b) Specimen Preparation. Two sizes of specimen and two gripping systems were used. i) 0.070-in. wire with a chemically milled gage section: 0.75 in. long, 0.060 in. in diam. These were fastened into grips containing tapped grooves. ii) 0.050 in. wire, gage length 1.5 in. Ball bearings were welded to the ends of the wires and the gage length was taken to include all material between the welds. Socket-type grips were used with these specimens. With specimens of type ii), joining was performed in a specially constructed brass jig, under argon, and automatic timing was utilized in the procedure. No adverse effects of welding were noted. Specimens were encapsulated and solution treated for 1 hr at temperatures selected to produce the same average grain size, -50 µ. Annealing twin boundaries as well as normal crystal boundaries were counted. The temperatures used are listed in Table 11. Table 11. Specimen Size. W. 0. Philbrook (Cairiegie Institute of Technologyogv—Mr. Slatosky has presented an interesting and constructive paper that represents another step along the way of converting steelmaking from an art to a science. I am confident that his computer will be practical and successful and that with a very few months of experience it will provide a significantly better degree of control than his record of 65 pct of heats within range obtained with the slide-rule calculator . A paper such as this, with a lot of symbols and condensed mathematics, is difficult to comprehend quickly. Since I have had an opportunity to study it carefully, perhaps my evaluation of its validity and accomplishments will save time for others. Mr. Slatosky has correctly used standard principles of stoichiometry and heat balances, which are available to anybody, but he has also brought to them two original contributions: 1) He has developed from operating data some empirical relations for predicting the final FeO content of the slag (at 0.5 pct C end-point) as a function of slag basicity, lance height, and scrap, ore, and scale in the charge. This improves the accuracy of prediction of temperature or scrap requirement compared with assuming an arbitrary, constant FeO content at the end of each heat. There is no assurance yet that exactly the same relations will hold for other furnaces or practices, but similar correlations can be expected. 2) He has combined calculations that are ordinarily carried out laboriously as a number of individual steps into a single, simple linear equation that can readily be fed into a machine. This involved a tremendous amount of painstaking detail work as well as the imagination to see the possibility and work out the steps. While his particular Eqs. [3] and [6] are valid only for the furnace design, charge weight, and blowing time used at Aliquippa Works, only a few numerical values have to be changed to adapt it for other conditions. In order to arrive at a useable solution, Mr. Slatosky had to make some basic assumptions about the process that are similar to those used by others. He neglected variation in some process variables and assumed an arbitrary average value for waste gas analysis and temperature for want of more exact information at the present time. All of these judgments are clearly stated. In addition, some thermody-namic data presently available are not adequate for the job, notably in relation to heats of formation and sensible heat in slag, and some expedient has to be adopted to get around the difficulty. Other people might prefer slightly different judgments about these details and hence obtain somewhat different numerical solutions. This is not of serious importance, however, because the errors accumulate in the "heat loss" term and are largely self-compensating for a constant heat time. Although the extended Eq. l(a) in Appendix I was set up as a rate equation originally, for convenience in using an analogue computer as stated in the paper, the time dependence was removed by later mathematical manipulations and assumptions about the process. The final result is an integration of element and energy balances from initial to final states; this procedure is as legitimate here as in any other form of heat-balance calculation. The formal handling of stoichiometry and thermochemistry appears to be correct, and it is assumed that any arithmetical errors would have come to light in applying the calculations to furnace practice. Mr. Slatosky&apos;s approach is not necessarily unique, in that other people might start with apparently different equations or prefer another form of final equation for another type of computer. However, he has presented an accomplished result that appears to be a theoretically sound and practically useful way of applying scientific principles and rapid computation for better control of steelmaking. His success will undoubtedly encourage himself and others to improve on the mathematical model and its use as better informatioq becomes available. John F. Elliott (Massachusetts Institute of Teck-t2ology)-The last comment by Mr. Richards that a calculator is quite unnecessary for an L-D operation ?-equi??es a rebuttal. The L-D furnace is a very high capacity process which places a premium on close control. When one is making steel at rates between 100 and 200 tons per hr, one cannot afford the luxury of an extra 5 or 10 min at the end of a heat correcting for an error that should never have been made in the first place. Mr. Slatosky&apos;s paper is a very sound application of the simple principles of stoichiometry and the energy balance. It is a satisfactory and valuable start, but only the start of the development of methods of control for this process. An analysis of the process shows that it should be very suitable to control by a computer. This is especially the case when various grades of steel are to be made. In fact, it would seem that the organizations who are planning new and bigger installations of L-D vessels should consider carefully the advantages that would stem from computer control of a vessel with the operator present to do little more

For the US coal industry, 1978 was a nightmarish recurrence of 1977 as the United Mine Workers strike cut into production during the first three months of 1978, followed by the strike against the Norfolk and Western Railway during the summer and early autumn. Coking coal production was floored by the one-two punch of environmental constraints on US coke ovens and competition from low-cost, high-quality imports. At the same time, US ex orts of coal fell to their lowest level since 1962. And in the face of all of this, steam coal consumption was sluggish as utilities burned huge amounts of oil to conserve coal stockpiles during the UMW strike. This was followed by decreased electrical demands due to mild summer weather in many parts of the country and dramatically improved availability of hydroelectric power.

The problem of determining the number of particles of a phase distributed randomly in unit volume c an opaque matrix from measurements made on random plane sections is closely investigated. A formalized derivation for the general case is presented. Applications of this formal result are made to specific types of aggregates dispersed in a matrix; circles, particles with flat circular ends, cylinders, and constant shape aggregates of ellipsoids of revolution. Quantitative measurements of the average geometric properties of these aggregates are developed. In 1953 R L. ullman&apos; developed a technique for determining, from measurements made on random plane sections, the number per unit volume, Nv, of particles imbedded in an opaque matrix. Using meas urements previously developed for volume fraction, vV,&apos; and surface area per unit volume, .SV,= he was able to determine average volume, average surface area, and average dimensions of particles, independent of size distribution, for spheres and circular disks,&apos; as well as for uniformly sized cylinders of any axial ratio.4 The technique is mathematically rigorous for the cases studied. Recent studies of this problem have yielded rigorous solutions for the general case of cylinders, permitting evaluation of NV independent of size distribution and with all axial ratios intermixed. Generalization to shapes having flat, circular ends has been deduced. A solution has also been obtained for the ellipsoid of revolution, independent of size distribution, but requiring a constant axial ratio in the generating ellipses. In the following derivations, as in Fullman&apos;s work, it is assumed that the problem is purely a combination of geometry and probability theory,that is,eithe the particles to be measured are imbedded randomly in the matrix, or a sufficient number of random plane sections are taken to make the sample representative. A relationship exists between the number of par- ticles of a given size and shape that may be situated in unit volume (Ny) and the number of intersections a random plane can be expected to make with these particles (Na). It is the purpose of the following section to derive this relationship. The probability of Intersecting Convex Bodies. Consider a convex, closed surface, that is, one for which no two surface normals point in the same direction, situated at some arbitrary position and orientation in a cube of material that is one unit long at each edge. It is not necessary to assume that this surface is symmetrical. Let planes be constructed in the cube parallel to the top face and at random distances from it. Those planes which lie between the two planes which are just tangent to the top and bottom of the surface will intersect it. The probability that a plane will intersect the body may be defined as the limit of the fraction of planes that lie between the two tangent planes as the total number of planes constructed becomes infinite. This fraction, in the limit, is equal to the distance between the two tangent planes, DV, divided by the total length over which planes are constructed, which has been taken as unity. If the body is now rotated to a new orientation, applying the same argument, the probability of intersection is again numerically equal to the distance between tangent planes. The effect of solute concentration and diffussivity on dendritic solidification of dilute binary aqueous solutions has been investigated; chlorides of sodium, potassium, lithiurn, and hydrogen were used as solutes. Dendrite spacings were measured in spherical droplets and in unidirectionally solidified specimens. In the droplets, the freezing rate is uniform over the entire specimen and remains constant from the beginning to the end of solidification. In the unidirec-tionally frozen specimens the freezing rate varies within a given volume of liquid during the solidification cycle; in addition, it varies with location uithin the specimen. Mass transport analysis has been used to calculate the supersaturation, AC, supercooling, AT, and transcerse growth velocity, V , of ice dendrites during solidijication from the dendrite spacings measured in the droplels. The ice dendrite spacing in a given solute increases lineary with the solule concentralion at a fixed freezing rate. The ualues of AC, AT, and V increase with an increase in solule concentration. The value of AT in the aqueous solution is of the same order of magnitude as in Al-Cu alloys of the same concentration; the dendrite spacings in Al-Cu alloys also increase with an increase in solute concentralion. For the jamily of aqueozrs solulions incestigaled, the dendrite spacing increases linearly with solute diffusivity at fixed values of concertralion and freezing ,rate. The values of ?C and ?T decrease, whereas the value of V increases with an increase in solule diffusicity. " Solute concentration and transport are therefore in]portant considerations in solidification of solutions. The influence of these factors on the dendritic solutions produced from metallic solutions is of practical significance since the properties of the solid aggre-gate are often strongly influenced by dendrite spacing.&apos;&apos;&apos; Alexander and Fthines3 found that dendrite spac- ings generally increase with solute concentration in several metallic systems. Michael and Bever1 have observed an increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings in dilute A1-Cu alloys. Rohatgi and AdamsJ have reported a linear increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings with increasing copper contents up to 28 pct in A1-Cu alloys. Bolling and Tiller"&apos; have theoretically examined the effects of solute concentration and diffusivity on the growth of cells and dendrites. Their analysis of dendritic growth assumes a steady-state growth and the maximum possible velocity for dendrite propagation. In addition, the quantitative analysis is restricted to dendrites of rotational symmetry and is therefore not directly applicable to the plate-shaped dendrites of ice obtained in the present study. There are practically no experimental observations of the effect of solute diffusivity on dendrite spacings in metallic systems. The reason appears to be the lack of experimental data on solute diffusion coefficients in liquid metallic solutions. The present work is concerned with the effect of solute concentration and diffusivity on dendritic solidification of dilute aqueous solutions: the solutes examined are potassium chloride. sodium chloride, lithium chloride. and hydrogen chloride. There were several reasons for selecting these solutes. The variation of dendrite spacing with freezing rate in these solutiolls is similar to that observed in A1-Cu alloys.8 These aqueous solutions have almost identical phase diagrams at dilute concentrations. Grain boundary dij]usion coefficienls were measured in tungsten between 1400° and 2200° C and can be expressed by the equation sq cm per sec This activation energy confirms some eavlier estimates made .from tungsten sintering experiments. Grain boundary diffusion was found to occur in sub-bozrndavies having -misorientations of less than 10 deg. The actiuation energy for this subboundavy diffusion is equal to that for dijjusion in incoherent grain boundaries with in the limits of error. This is shown to be consistent with the dislocation model of Low-angle boundaries wheve diffusion occlcvs along- the dislocation &apos;YPipes" comprising -tile boundary. RECENT investigations of the sintering of tungsten powders all report activation energies which are considerably less than the activation energy for tungsten volume diffusion. Kothari&apos; reports a value of 100 * 5 kcal per mole, Hayden and Brophy&apos; obtained 90 kcal per mole, and Vasilos and smith3 found 110.7 kcal per mole from their sintering studies. Since most determinations of the activation energy for volume diffu-sion4-&apos; fall between 120 and 160 kcal per mole (the true value seems most likely to be nearer 150 kcal per mole), the conclusion is drawn that the mass transport leading to densification during sintering is accomplished by grain boundary diffusion. This interpretation is consistent with various diffusion models of the sintering process. 10-12 Vasilos and Smith calculate diffusion coefficients from their data which fit the equation D * 1.36 x 10* exp(-llO,700/HD However, no direct measurements of tungsten grain boundary diffusion have been made. Furthermore, considerable disagreement exists between the directly measured values of tungsten volume diffusion.&apos;-&apos; In order to corroborate the inferred results of the sintering experiments concerning grain boundary diffusion and to provide accurate diffusion data essential to the analysis of the kinetics of creep, oxidation, precipitation, and so forth, the present work was undertaken to measure self-diffusion in single-crystal and polycrystalline tungsten between 1400" and 2200°C. It is within this temperature range that tungsten sintering is done, the re crystallization of tungsten occurs, and the widest application of tungsten as a high-temperature material will probably be made. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Radioactive WlE5 was produced by irradiating tungstic acid in a neutron flux of 1.2 x 1012 neutrons per sq cm per sec for 36 hr. A 2-week waiting period was allowed for the decay of w"~ also produced by the irradiation. (w"~ has a half-life of 24 hr.) The half-life of the remaining isotope was determined to be 75 days confirming the presence of w lE5 and the absence of any undesired radionuclide. Specimens 4 in. in diam and $ in. thick were cut from polycrystalline swaged tungsten rods (recrystal-lized) and from Linde single-crystal rods. Chemical analyses of these materials appear in Table I. Actually upon closer examination, the single-crystal specimens were found to consist of several subgrains separated primarily by tilt boundaries in which the misor-ientation ranged from 3 to 10 deg. Thus, it was possible to measure boundary diffusion coefficients in these low-angle subboundaries as well as in the incoherent boundaries of the polycrystalline specimens. The two faces of each specimen were ground flat and parallel within 0.0001 in. The radioactive tungstic acid was dissolved in concentrated ammonium hydroxide, placed on the ground flat of the specimen, and evaporated to dryness. The oxide was then reduced in hydrogen at 1000°C resulting in a layer of wlE5 approximately 1 p thick. The diffusion anneals were performed in vacuum in a tantalum resistance furnace. Time at temperature ranged from 10 hr at 1400°C to 2 hr at 2200°C. The penetration profile was determined by measuring the residual activity after successive removal of surface layers by grinding on metallographic polishing paper. Extreme care was exercised to insure that sections were always taken normal to the diffusion direction; this was verified repeatedly by checking that front and back surfaces of the specimen remained parallel. The activity was measured with an end-window Geiger-Mueller counter. The sides and edges of the specimen were well-shielded to eliminate possible effects due to surface diffusion. The weight of the

Measurements have been made of solute segregation during dendrilic growth by using radioactive solute elements and ,measuring the activity of den(12-ites cut from decanted specimens. This has been done for both lead awl tin based binary alloys contaitzing the following solute additions: Ag, T1204, was dependet on ko, the equilibrium distribution coefficient in the following way Fay k &apos;c 0.1, C/C 0.6; for k0 >0.1. 0.6 <c,/c,< I. Qualitative obse?-vations were madc of dendritic segregation, by using autoradiographic techniques, for the Sn + Ag110 and Sn + Tlo4 systems. The observation were found to he in general agreement with the measurements ofCA/Co. Autoradiographic were also obtained of scctiolccl delzr11-iie stalks. These indicated that the stalks had a substructure, dclileated by solute corzetlt?atio?zs nlolg the substructure walls. A new dendrite growth direction <JI2> is reported for tila. SOLUTE segregation in dilute binary alloys has been investigated by Pfann,&apos; Smith, Tiller, and Rut-ter,&apos; and others. They considered the case of a slowly advancing plane solid interface, and derived expressions for the distribution of solute in both solid and liquid during solidification. To determine these expressions, they assumed no diffusion in the solid and either complete mixing in the liquid:&apos; or diffusion controlled solute movements in the liquid without any convective mixing.&apos; The present investigation considers solute segregation during dendritic growth, in which case the solid-liquid interface is not plane, and the growth rates are rapid. Segregation under these growth conditions has not been treated mathematically, because of the relative complexity of the system. It has been suggested by Chalmer, on the basis of preliminary results, that an alternative to the diffusion and heat flow controlled conditions during growth is &apos;diffusionless" dendritic growth in which solid is formed with the same composition as the liquid. He suggests this type of growth may depend upon a solvent-solute relationship that permits some solid solubility without excessive increase in internal energy, as is the case for solutions of tin in lead. On the other hand, Montariol,4 and others, have shown experimentally that some segregation does occur during dendritic growth in metals using etching and radioactive tracer techniques to indicate the concentrations of the solute. The present investigation was undertaken to determine, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the extent of solute segregation associated with dendritic growth in a series of binary alloys, as a function of solute concentration. PROCEDURE The solvent materials used were Vulcan Electrolytic tin (99.997 pct purity) and Tadanac lead (99.998 pct purity). The solute materials were Zn, Sn, and Sb (better than 99.998 pct purity), Ag and Co (99.5 pct purity), and T1 (Fisher "purified" metal sticks). Activation of the solute metals was carried out in the reactor at Chalk River, Canada. Master alloys were prepared by induction heating from the radioactive solute metal and the pure solvent, under argon, in graphite crucibles. Pieces of these alloys were then added to the solvent to give the required solute concentration. Dendrites were grown in essentially the same manner as that described by Weinberg and Chalmer, , in which controlled orientation single crystals were grown dendritically in horizontal graphite boats, and the liquid decanted. The crystals were grown and decanted in an atmosphere of tank argon. Before decanting, a sample of the liquid was drawn up in a glass tube and allowed to solidify rapidly. The orientations of the single crystals were such that <loo> was parallel to the growth direction, and (100) in the horizontal plane for lead, and [1101 and (110) respectively for tin. With these orientations long dendrite stalks formed along the bottom of the boat in the dendrite direction (<100> for lead and [I101 for tin) from which secondary branches grew. Only these secondary branches, which grew freely in the liquid from the dendrite stalk to the liquid surface, were used in the measurements. Accordingly, effects due to substrates and oxides on the surface of the liquid need not be considered. THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth&apos;s crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night ; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable , us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. The relations between micros tructures and critical current density in transverse magnetic field were experimentally investigated due to each transformation of the 0 to 0&apos; + P" phases at 700&apos; C for superconductmainly examined using replication electron microscopy. The ß&apos; or a precipitates were found to pin down magnetic flux lines in these alloys. The effects of precipitation upon the critical current density were discussed in relation with the size, spacing, and characler of these precipitates. HIGH magnetic field superconductors, such as Nb-Zr, Nb-Ti, and Nb-Zr-Ti alloys, have been recently put to extensive practical use as winding materials for superconducting magnets.13 The critical current density of these hard superconductors under an applied magnetic field is an important characteristic for magnet materials and is very sensitive to metallurgical structure. It is generally known that the critical current density is increased by introducing dislocations and precipitates into a superconductor; that is, dislocations and precipitates are presumed to be barriers that hinder quantized flux lines from moving.4&apos;5 Theoretical6&apos;7 and experimental analyses of the motion of flux lines and the interaction between flux lines and various defects have already been reported by many authors. Metallographic analysis of high magnetic field superconductors such as Nb-Zr and Nb-Ti is difficult, so that no quantitative relationship between microstruc-ture and critical current density has been established yet. In this paper, the effect of precipitation on the critical current density in magnetic field was investigated for two superconducting alloys, Nb-40Zr-10Ti and Nb-5Zr-60Ti. In these alloys the resistive critical field H, at 4.2oK was about 100 kG and the critical current density Jc at 80 kG was of the order of 104 amp per sq cm.13-l5 The superconducting properties were examined in relation to the microstructural changes due to transformation of i) the ß to ß&apos; + ß" phases at 700°C for Nb-40Zr-10Ti alloy and ii) the ß to a + ß phases at 500°C for Nb-5Zr-6OTi alloy. The effect of size, spacing, and character of precipitates on flux line pinning was in particular examined. The microstructures were studied by means of residual resistivity, microhardness, and tensile strength measurements as well as by X-ray diffraction, optical, and replication electron microscopies. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pure niobium, zirconium, and titanium, in the form of rods 0.8 cm in diam, served as raw materials. Results of chemical analyses of these rods are given in Table I. Ingots of the alloys, 0.4 cm in diam and 3 cm in length, were prepared by means of levitation melting, utilizing a copper mold in an argon-gas atmosphere. Samples from the ingot then were cold-worked by grooved mill to 0.2 cm in diam, heat-treated homogeneously (in the ß phase region) for 5 hr at 1100° in a vacuum of 1 x 106 Torr, and finally cold-drawn to 0.025 cm in diam. For heat treatments, samples were wrapped in niobium foil and sealed in an argon-gas atmosphere in fused quartz capsules. Water quenching was done after each heat treatment. Subsequently H-J, were performed at 4.2° by slowly transporting the current through the samples 4 cm long, under transverse magnetic field, until the least detectable resistive terminal voltage was observed. The resistive critical field H, was taken as the field at which 100 pv appeared at 4.2°K across a sample 3 cm in length, with a current of 5 ma. The critical temperature T, was measured by means of a conventional four-probe resistivity technique and taken as the temperature at which the sample resistance reached one-half of full restoration of the normal-state resistance with a current l ma flowing through a sample 2 cm in length. Precipitates were observed by means of optical microscopy and carbon replication electron microscopy. The etching solution consisted of 5 ml HF, 10 ml H2SO4 10 ml H2O2, and 50 ml H2O, and shadowed carbon replicas were examined in a itachi HU-11 electron microscope operated at 50 kv. X-ray diffraction photographs were taken by a 11.46-cm-diam Debye-Scher-rer camera using copper Ka radiation. The micro-hardness was measured under a load of 200 g using

It is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels is associated with the presence of continuous grain houndary paths of either second phase, or solute segregate resulting from solute-vacancy interactions. Experimental observations of structural changes and crrosion behavior of different types of austenitic stainless steel provide support for this poposal. On the basis of this model, it is shown that the intergranular -corrosion susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels in nitric-dic hromate solution may be substantially reduced either by suitable heat treatments or by impurity control. AUSTENITIC stainless steels, such as Type 304, generally have excellent corrosion resistant properties when properly solution heat-treated and used at temperatures where carbide precipitation is slow. However, several corrosion environments have been found which produce intergranular corrosion of solu-tion-treated stainless steels, that is, those steels with no detectable carbide precipitation.&apos;&apos;2 Of the various corrosion environments, the most widely used test solution has been the boiling nitric-dichromate solution. In these acid solutions, stainless steels have been found to be susceptible to intergranular attack despite the addition of carbide-forming elements such as titanium or columbium, or despite lowering of the carbon content or use of high-temperature solution treatments. Studies of the electrochemical mechanism of corrosion attack have been made by several worke1s3&apos;4 who found that oxidizing ions such as crt6 depolarize the cathodic reactions and consequently raise the open-circuit potential of stainless steel immersed in nitric acids. As a result of this, the anodic reaction is accelerated. The reason for the localization of anodic activity at the grain boundaries, and resulting intergranular corrosion, has not been conclusively determined. Several workers, e.g., Streicher,3 and Coriou et al.,4 have suggested that the strain energy associated with grain boundaries provides the driving force for the accelerated intergranular corrosion. This argument would predict that alloys of high purity would still be susceptible to intergranular attack. However, work by chaudron5 and by ArmijO,6 has shown that high-purity alloys are immune to attack, in disagreement with this argument. An alternative suggestion is that chemical concentration differences exist between grains and grain boundaries, that is, impurity segregation at boundaries, and that these chemical differences provide the driving force for localized attack. It is this impurity segregation which can lead to accelerated dissolution of grain boundaries when the alloy is exposed to a suitable corrodant. This mechanism would predict the immunity of high-purity alloys to inter-granular attack, which is in agreement with experi-mental observations. In the present paper, some recent studies on inter-granular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels which were conducted by coworkers and myself will be re-tibility A simple model will be described in which it is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of aus-tenitic stainless steel is associated with the presence of continuous grain boundary paths of either second phase or solute-segregated regions.* On the basis of this model, it is suggested that the intergranular corrosion rate can be markedly reduced by the formation of a discontinuous second phase at the grain boundaries if the discontinuous second phase incorporates the major part of the segregating solute, drained from the grain boundary region. Results are presented of corrosion tests and electron microscopic studies of different types of austenitic stainless steel after various heat treatments which provide experimental support for this model. Finally, a solute clustering mechanism, based on a solute-vacancy interaction, is shown to be consistent with the results obtained for inter-granular corrosion of solution-treated austenitic stainless steels. EXPERIMENTAL Corrosion tests using weight loss measurements were made on sheet specimens, which were lightly electropolished, washed, and immersed in boiling (115°C) 5 N HN03 containing 4 g crt+6 per liter added as potassium dichromate. Studies in which the inter-granular penetration depth was measured both by electrical resistance and metallographic methods have shown an empirical correlation between the rate of intergranular penetration and the weight loss per unit time for identically treated specimens of stainless steel." As a result, although all the corrosion data reported here are in terms of simple weight loss measurements, these data are considered to reflect primarily the rate of intergranular dissolution. Fig. 1 shows a typical result of intergranular attack of a solution-treated Type 304 stainless steel after 4 hr in a boiling nitric-dichromate solution. The wide grain boundary grooving at the surface, and the attack at incoherent twin boundaries, are evident; very little corrosion attack is seen at the coherent twin boundaries. IT is notable that the first large-scale mine operation equipped entirely with detachable bits was the Badger State mine of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Montana, just 30 years ago. This mine in 1922 was producing approximately 1200 tons of ore per day. Much of the data presented in C. L. Berrien&apos;s article&apos; describing the development and installation of the Hawkesworth detachable drill bit were obtained from these operations. As in any pioneering effort, no precedent existed and many difficult problems required solution, so that the changeover to detachable bits at all Butte hill mines was not completed for 6 years. There was widespread disbelief as to the probable efficiency of the new installation. Some attempts were made in 1931 by the owners of the Hawkesworth patents to interest Ontario gold mine operators in the bit. These efforts were not successful, but they undoubtedly stimulated thinking which resulted in the invention and patenting of several well-known Canadian detachable bits, one of which is now a widely used throwaway bit. The success of the Butte installation also led to the development of the threaded type of bit connections by several well-known manufacturers, and in 1935 these bits were introduced to the mining industry on a national scale. The original Hawkesworth bit was not provided with a water hole but, depended upon water passing through the clearance opening between the tongue in the bit and the groove in the rod to flush cuttings from the drill hole, see Fig. 1. In December 1935 it was found that this method of introducing drilling water to the bit face resulted in high dust counts. To correct this a water hole was drilled on the central axis of the bit, passing through the tongue. Unfortunately, quenching water would rise through the small water hole, spot-hardening the tongue to cause breakage, never completely eliminated. In the fall of 1936 large-scale tests indicated that savings would be effected by use of a threaded type of bit, which was therefore adopted as standard for all Butte mines. This type of bit was used until 1947, when it was superseded by a one-use slip-on type. Since the first use of the Hawkesworth bit every detachable bit of importance has been investigated, and where advantages which might reduce costs or increase efficiency were indicated, substantial tests of the bit were carried on in the Butte mines. When tests demonstrated the advisability of changing from one kind of detachable bit to another the change was made at one level or in one area each day until the new rod and bit equipment was used throughout the mine. This involved a minimum of cost and disruption of drilling. Intelligent selection of a detachable bit to obtain optimum results requires careful consideration to achieve a balance between the three principal types of equipment used in the drilling process: 1—drill bits, 2—drill steel, and 3—drilling machines. Optimum results imply maximum output and minimum cost per unit of output. Since every rock type differs in drillability and it is generally impractical to provide equipment for more than one or two types of rock which may occur in one operation, selection of equipment must encompass average drilling conditions. However, on exceptional occasions several widely differing conditions may make it mandatory to provide equipment best suited to each condition. The choice of rock-drilling equipment is a most controversial subject and one that is further complicated by unreliable and frequently misleading performance claims. Small operators without the means for making accurate evaluations of equipment frequently suffer from these over-enthusiastic claims. It is apparent from experience in rock drilling throughout the world that rock drillability is not alike in any two places, and that selection of proper equipment can only be made after conducting thorough trials of various types of equipment. Some recent drilling tests in tactite and hornstone at the Darwin, California mine of the Anaconda Co. present some interesting clues on rock drillability. Microscopic examination of thin sections of these rocks reveals that mineral composition and rock texture are equally important in governing drillability. The Darwin hornstone is at times so abrasive that the carbide bit cutting edges become flattened to 3/32 in. in 2 to 4 ft of drilling, and some carbide bits were dulled to this point after 9 to 10 in. of drilling. This wear was determined to be the proper point for resharpening to eliminate carbide insert breakage or breakage of the steel rod when drilling with 1½ to 1?-in. bits, with a drifter of 2 3/4-in. diam and 90 to 100 psi air pressure, see Supplement A. Before considering the merits of various bit designs it may be well to review the mechanics of drilling rock with percussion drills. A sharp bit cuts by penetration and chipping.
