IT is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony-stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. The empirical equilibrium constantsd the heat of reaction for the reduction have been determined from 300° to 500°C. The mechanisms of the oxidation of uranium and magnesium from dilute bismuth solutions have been investigated. The kinetics of some of the reactions were affected by air adsorbed on the uranium oxides. THE Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor studied at Brook-haven National Laboratory uses a solution of uranium in bismuth as the fuel. Corrosion and stability problems require that the fuel solution contain corrosion inhibitors and deoxidants. Of the additives tested, magnesium has been found to be the best deoxidant and zirconium the best corrosion inhibitor in bismuth. Some experiments1 indicate that magnesium may play a secondary role in increasing the effectiveness of zirconium in inhibiting corrosion. The work reported here was intended to determine the relative concentrations of Mg and U required to prevent oxidation of the uranium fuel in the event of an air leak. In addition, an attempt was made to identify some of the mechanisms of the oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in the liquid bismuth solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus and Procedure—The equipment shown in Fig. 1 was designed so that the reaction kinetics could be studied as functions of temperature, melt composition, pressure, and flow rate. At the start of a run, the 10-liter bell jar (F) is removed by opening the bottom Dresser fitting (L), and the bismuth and additives are placed in a pyrex crystallizing dish (I). The bell jar is replaced, the system is evacuated to 10-5 to 10-6 mm Hg and then the heater (J) is turned on. When the selected temperature is reached, the oxidizing gas is admitted to the system to the desired pressure as read on the manometer (D). Gas is introduced through the slide tube (Q) which has a pyrex frit (R) sealed to its bottom. Stirring is accomplished by immersing the end of the tube in the melt. To maintain a constant pressure under flow the input and evacuation rates must be equalized. To obtain this condition stopcock (C) is closed and flowmeters (B) are matched. The reaction is "stopped" by closing the inlet flowmeter and quickly evacuating the system. To obtain a liquid metal sample, the system is evacuated with the sampler positioned near the surface of the liquid. The sampler, Fig. 2, is then immersed until its thermocouple reading matches thermocouple (G) Fig. 1. The system is then pressurized with helium which forces the solution through the frit. Twenty to 30 min elapsed between the time the system was evacuated and sampled. During evacuation and pressurization of the system, the temperature variations did not exceed ± 5°C. While bubbling occurred the temperature remained constant to within 1/2 oC. The volume of the equipment was determined by adding a known volume of air at atmospheric pressure to the evacuated system and noting the resulting pressure.

MINE models have three distinct uses: 1. As exhibits in expositions and museums. 2. As exhibits in law suits. 3. As illustrations in teaching mining engineering. All three uses are in a sense educational. The third, or distinctively teaching function, has not been extensively developed in America as it has been abroad, chiefly because of the cost of the models and the scarcity of model makers. In connection with expositions, such as the Columbian, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Panama-Pacific, a number of very good mine and metallurgical models were prepared with funds furnished by State commissions, by mining organizations or mining companies. At the close of these, expositions, some of these models have been deposited in National or State museums or in educational institutions, but too many of them have been lost, or have been stored, away in some mining company's office or in the basement of some State building, where they have been lost sight of and have gradually fallen to pieces. A visitor to a German mining school is impressed by two facts: 1. The mining laboratories are in general inferior to those in America. 2. The mining museums are infinitely superior -to ours, particularly in models exhibited. One may reply to this comparison by saying that a museum is necessarily a work of time. From the historical standpoint this is, of course, true, but it is not necessarily true in connection with a working museum intended to illustrate current practice. For instance, the oldest mining school in Germany, that at Freiberg, has much excellent historical material, but very little on modern practice, while Berlin, one of the youngest German mining schools, has a most extensive and valuable collection of modern appliances and models. This is true in spite of the fact that one of the best-known model shops is at Freiberg, from which many of, the models to be seen in America have come. Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. Laboratory and field tests were conducted using these wax-polymer materials to demonstrate that the use of a deformable diverting agent can significantly improve fluid diverting performance. THE consideration of the present value of a mine is of great importance when planning for the operation of a property,, and it is particularly so in the case of mines that have large ore reserves. At various times during the past 15 years, the writer has had occasion to make rather thorough studies of the subject, and has been greatly impressed by certain important points which these studies have brought out, points which, though they may be well known, are often lost track of in the rush to obtain low mining costs and high daily tonnage output. . It is the object of this paper to present briefly, and in a general way, some of these points, and especially those which have to do with the relationship which (1) ore reserves and plant capacity, (2) grade of ore mined, and (3) ore losses in mining, bear to the present value. Present value, sometimes called present worth or actuarial value, means the value today of the future earnings of an enterprise. Great industrial, manu-facturing or railroad enterprises, if properly handled, go on indefinitely and their value is directly dependent on their estimated annual earnings. Mines, or oil properties, on the other hand, have an earning capacity only until the ore or oil is exhausted, and their present value is dependent not only on their annual earnings but also on their life, which is the length of the period over which they can produce at a profit. A mine, or an oil property, is a "wasting asset," while an estab-lished manufacturing business is not, or should not be. In other words, the present value of a mining property. represents a sum of money on which there could be paid from operating profits a determined rate of interest, say 8 per cent., and in addition an amount which, if invested at compound interest as received, would at the end of the life of the mine pay back the present value. In his "Wealth and Income of the American People," Walter Renton Ingalls says: "The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding to the life of the mine."

There are many methods for determining the meridian, but all of those in common use involve at least two separate observations, one for latitude and one for azimuth. Such observations made upon a south star at any hour are open to the objection of possible inaccuracy due to ignorance of the absolute refraction, and also to slow change in the altitude of the star when near the meridian. The method of observing a circum-polar star at elongation. besides requiring a separate observation for latitude, is open to the serious objection that clouds may obscure the star at the critical moment. Moreover, a tedious wait for the star to come to elongation is sometimes necessary. Many of us can recall 'long, cold, weary vigils, waiting for Polaris to reach elongation. For observing a circumpolar star at any hour, not only the latitude, but also the true time, must be known. This it is practically impossible to obtain, except in regions reached by the telegraph, and usually then one has to know the longitude also, in order to reduce " standard time" to " local time." The results obtained by this method, when the star is at culmination, are not very good, unless the true local time is absolutely known. The methods of obtaining the nleridian from the sun, by means of a solar attachment, or by direct observation, while good, are not absolute, by reason of refraction, change in declination of the sun, and small change in vertical angle, when the sun is near the meridian. For these two methods, latitude, time, and approximate longitude have to be known. In the method here described, only one observation is needed, and from it are computed azimuth, latitude, aud sidereal time. In other words, one call observe a circumpolar star—Polaris

Cylindrical fatigue specimens of OFHC* copper were subjected to alternating torsion while under axial tension. The superimposed tension strongly influenced the fatigue life of the specimens as well as causing characteristic changes in the structure of the fissures that form and develop throughout the life of the specimen. A further effect of the superimposed tension is a continuous extension of the specimen throughout its life in a manner formally similar to creep at elevated temperatures. RECENTLY, studies of the structural changes leading to fracture of metals by fatigue have been made by a technique which reveals, in section, the lattice distortion arising from slip movements inside the metal and the disturbances built up by these slip movements at the metal surface.1'2 According to this approach, fatigue develops as follows: a) fine slip movements concentrate in bands, producing little strain-hardening and thus permitting abnormal totals of plastic strain before fracture and, therefore, abnormal amounts of lattice distortion along each slip band; b) both forward and backward slip movements occur in each band which, according to their distribution across the band, may build up surface disturbances that include sharp notches; c) these notches early in the life of a specimen penetrate the distorted slip zones and transform them into deep, fine fissures; d) the fissures on continued cycling locally saturate the metal and cause local collapse in the form of a microcrack. Fundamental principles of trend surface analysis are briefly reviewed. Recent analyses of several granite masses illustrate the method of estimating the quantitative regional composition and also variation trends. Mineralogi-cal, bulk chemical, and other quantitative variates can be employed. Such results should improve gravimetric surveys (etc.) relying on correction terms based upon estimated rock composition. For the first time realistic estimates of the mean composition of rock bodies can be made with the aid of trend components. Deviation maps hold promise for delimitation of disseminated mineralized areas. Deviations comprise residual "anomalies" after removal of trend components. In petrogenetic work such deviations have been shown to reflect local influences (e.g., contamination of magma by assimilation of xenoliths or country rocks of the envelope). Similarly, mineralization should be reflected as deviations standing out from background trends. Actual examples are given. Present results largely involved projection of data onto a horizontal plane, but if sufficient data are available use of three spatial coordinates increases accuracy for prediction in "unexposed" areas. Regression analysis shows that statistical correlations between variates for regionally distributed specimens are often strong (particularly with percentage data). Hence, in preliminary surveys more easily determined variates may sometimes be employed to gain first estimates of the distribution of components more economically significant. The sampling plan is of paramount importance. Unless a suitable sampling plan is devised and adhered to rigorously during collection of the samples, all subsequent analysis is liable to strong bias and to yield spurious estimates of the truth. For a wide variety of purposes it is becoming necessary to assess the quantitative composition and variability of rock masses and mineralized zones of various types. In petrology and petrography this is something of a break with tradition, because virtually all descriptions heretofore have been qualitative. Although vast amounts of qualitative data have been compiled, little is known about the quantitative behavior of rock components. However, if variability of rocks could be understood and expressed with sufficient accuracy, there would be considerable advantage to both economic and petrogenetic problems. For example, if, on the basis of a limited series of observations, the three-dimensional geometry of a disseminated orebody (or ore-bearing formation) could be predicted accurately, it would be possible to extrapolate with confidence the structure into unexposed areas. The following example based upon the geometry of an igneous cone sheet illustrates the point. The significant rock-unit gives outcrops at a number of points on the exposed surface ABCD (Fig. 1A). Study of n exposures may enable a geologist to predict that the rock-unit is circular in form and thus indicate where the unit can be expected in unexposed terrain. Such observations are made at sites with u, v coordinates, but, if subsurface information is available at sites with uvw coordinates, it will eventually become possible to predict accurately the three-dimensional form of the rock mass. Geologic rock masses or mineral deposits are not generally as regular and symmetrical in geometric form as the body illustrated in Fig. 1A. However, even where the broad limits of a major rock mass are known, a more acute problem arises in attempting to obtain detailed quantitative estimates of its internal variability; it is difficult to predict the variability of a mass from a limited number of observa-

Part I. The interaction between potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts has been studied thermo-chemically. It is shown that ethyl xanthate reacts with lead carbonate, basic carbonate, thiosulfate and sulfate according to principles of simple chemistry, whereas reactions with lead sulfite, metasulfite, basic thiosulfate and hydroxide at high pH are associated with secondary reactions. A new compound "xanthogen thiosulfate" is postulated. Part 11. Adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena has been studied quantitatively and thennochemi-cally. It is shown that an ion-exchange mechanism governs the adsorption process and that the heat of adsorption of xanthate on galena is equivalent to the heat of reaction of ethyl xanthate with bulk lead salts. It is concluded that the entropy content of the surface "compound" on galena is different from that of a corresponding bulk lead salt. Alkali depression is in part shown to be due to the instability of the xanthate-galena system at high pH and to the formation of basic lead salts. Sulfate and carbonate ions are shown to have a stabilizing effect on the xanthate-galena system. PARTI. THERMOCHEMISTRY OF ETHYL XANTHATE AND OF ITS REACTION WITH LEAD SALTS In the past little attention has been paid to the chemistry of lead xanthate. It is known that xan-thates form slightly soluble compounds with lead and that suspensions of lead xanthates in alkaline solution decompose rather readily.' The solubility of lead ethyl xanthate is of the order of 2.6 x 10-6 moles per 1. At increasing pH the xanthate concentration of a saturated solution contains more xanthate. Thus at pH 11 this xanthate content is about 100-fold larger than at pH 7.1 Xanthates are known to be consumed when added to a suspension of slightly soluble lead salts such as lead sulfate and lead carbonate. It is unknown to what extent this xanthate consumption is due to a simple chemical reaction because, frequently, observations are made which reveal secondary reaction products in such reactions. Thermochemical study of the reaction between xanthate and lead salts offers a means to clarify the significance of these reactions as the enthalpy changes can be accurately predicted from heat of formation of lead salts in pure solution reactions. In the present work the heats of formation of lead ethyl xanthate from potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts are determined and some thermochemical aspects of xanthate in solution are studied. The results of these investigations are presented in Part I. In Part II the heat of adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena surfaces is presented. All enthalpy changes were measured directly in a microcalorimeter. INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The most important of these fractures or fissures, both in width and value, are the Prieta and Blanca veins, which.

Most of the information available on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes, both water and steam, has been obtained from calculated temperature distributions in the pay zone and adjacent formations. The usual approach has been to write the heat balance equations in terms of the temperatures, and then to introduce whatever simplifications are necessary to help obtain an analytical or a numerical solution. In either case, the assumption has often been made that the vertical thermal conductivity in the flooded interval is infinite, so that the temperatures within the flooded interval are then independent of vertical position. Because it was first made by Lauwerier,l and has been used extensively since, this assumption will be referred to as the Lauwerier assumption. Excellent reviews of the literature on the heat efficiency of hot fluid injection processes have been given by Spillette,2 Flock et al.,3 and Ramney.4 Of course, the most significant contributions take into account the effect of a finite vertical thermal conductivity on the vertical temperature profile. The most general analytic expression for the heat efficiency of a hot fluid injection process is that of Antimirov5 who considers injection of a heated incompressible fluid into a reservoir through an arbitrary number of wells. The rate of heat injection into the reservoir, as well as the injection temperature, is an arbitrary function of time. The geometry of the horizontal flow is arbitrary, although the reservoir is considered to be of uniform thickness and properties and to be of infinite areal extent. Heat transfer within the reservoir is by horizontal convection and conduc- tion, and by vertical conduction. In the formations adjacent to the flooded interval, heat transfer is by conduction in any direction. Thus, the available expression for the heat efficiency due to hot water injection has been developed for rather general conditions. This degree of applicability has not been obtained for other thermal recovery processes. By making the Lauwerier assumption we have been able to obtain expressions for the heat efficiency that are essentially independent of the thermal recovery process, be it steam, hot-water, or underground combustion. Clearly, then, the approach followed here is more restrictive than that of Antimirov5 in that it uses the Lauwerier assumption. At the same time less restrictive assumptions are made about the horizontal heat transfer mechanisms, either in the flooded interval or in the formations adjacent to it. The main difference between our approach and that of other investigators is that the heat balance in the pay zone is expressed for the pay zone as a whole rather than for a volume element within it. The Lauwerier assumption is introduced after the problem is developed along these lines as far as possible. The details of the development of the heat efficiency are given in the Appendix, while the main features of the model are discussed in the next section. THE study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by studying the travel times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs at varying distances, major discontinuities in the earth's crust could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seismology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boundaries of our information on local conditions below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called "seismograph" exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in locating salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we are dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something quite different, in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to the other is likewise relatively abrupt. For example, in the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, delineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results.

As an important mechanism for increasing production of the suction-draft-sinter process, it has been shown that gas permeability through the sinter layer plays an important role. Methods to increase production rates have been indicated and suggestions for carrying out the process have been made to improve the rate of production, reduce the fuel consumption, and at the same time obtain a uniform sinter. Laboratory experiments were conducted at the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy of the Technical University at Aachen to illustrate these methods. Methods of Increasing Gas Penetration Through Sinter Layers The following are of fundamental importance in determining the process cycle during the sintering of iron ores: 1) Generation of maximum temperature, since its form and range determine sinter quality. 2) Propagation velocity of the temperature maximum which controls the attainable output. 3) The convective heat transfer which influences the velocity of travel of the temperature maximum.

When a rock particle is subjected to an external force, internal stresses and deformations are experienced by the particle. Assuming that the breakage of a rock is mainly due to tensile stresses generated by the action of a pair of concentrated loads, F, directed in compression towards the loading points at the shortest distance, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the stress and deformation experienced by a particle of irregular shape can be determined with the aid of the theory of elasticity. According to the photoelastic experiments made by one of the present authors,' the stress states in a rock particle of irregular shape are quite similar to that of an inscribed sphere of diameter x, as indicated in Fig. 1, but accompanied by the faint stresses, in the vicinity of the particle outside of the inscribed sphere. Therefore, the stress components in an irregularly shaped particle can be estimated by referring to stress components in a sphere. Applying polar spherical coordinates to an elastic spherical body, as shown in Fig. 1, the stress components are all expressed as multiples of F /x2 and more or less influenced by the loading angle and Poisson's number m. Any discussion of outside support to Latin American mineral industries must concede at once the pre-eminent role of U. S. industry and business. American capital has developed the great copper resources of Chile and Peru, the lead-zinc of Peru and Mexico, the bauxite of Surinam and Jamaica, the petroleum and iron ore of Venezuela. American consumers have provided the market for their products. U. S. companies operating south of the border have trained Latin American geologists, engineers, chemists, and skilled labor—including metal, mineral, and fuel technicians—to new and greater competence. The industrial demands of World War II drastically altered world economics and concepts of U. S. foreign mineral requirements. In this country discovery of vital mineral resources fell far behind the alarming depletion rates, and there was new appreciation of the actual and potential importance of the world's less extensively explored areas. During the war and afterward, the task of supplying the nation's mineral requirements became greater than private industry could carry alone, and the Government assumed a position of continuing support. In Latin America, as elsewhere, this support applies in three categories: banking, procurement, and technical assistance. The first two are now generally accepted as necessary Government functions; the third has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted, although it has given rise to legitimate controversy. There have been major accomplishments in all three categories, as well as some errors of judgment. Since the beginning of World War 11, U. S. Government financing, procurement, and technical assistance have been applied on a large scale to a wide range of commodities and services throughout the free world. The present discussion—under the separate headings mentioned—will concern only the support related to a single industrial group in a single geographic area. During the War Federal banking was conducted on an emergency scale by temporary agencies created to meet the abnormal circumstances. Unfortunately, there are no readily available data on these activities that would permit evaluating loans and credits extended for mineral projects in Latin America. The only agency operating in this field since World War II is the Export-Import Bank, under its own authority and to some extent from credits authorized by the Office of Defense Mobilization. The Bank can offer more capital—on more favorable terms—than is available from most Latin American banks, and its staff of engineers evidently can appraise loan applications more favorably than commercial banks in this country are willing to do. The risks seem to be justified, as defaults have been well under 1 pct of total loans. From V-J day 1945 to the end of 1957, mineral loans to Latin America have been authorized for projects totaling $541.63 million in eight countries. In order of magnitude of credits, they have been made to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Bolivia. In order of magnitude by industries. they are for development and expansion of steel mills, copper, manganese, nitrate plants, iron ore, zinc plants, sulfur plants, cement plants, tungsten, coal, and lead. Loan Distribution: By far the largest loans have been $307.9 million for iron and steel projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Peru: $100.4 for developing the great low-grade copper deposits of southern Peru; and $55.3 million for developing manganese deposits in the Territory of Amapa, Brazil. Others range from $20.8 million for a zinc smelter in central Peru to $19 thousand for iron-mine trucking equipment in Chile. It has been noted that 59 pct of the loans have been to foreign companies, 14 pct to companies of mixed foreign and American capital, and 27 pct to American mining companies. OVERPOLED copper, as commonly defined, is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such copper is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a Well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, Which enables copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that When oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; When oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, Which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of Wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, While an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the effect of this action. on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulphur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

THE classical papers on contact metasomatic deposits by Lindgren on the Clifton-Morenci district,' by Barrell on Marysville, Mont.,' and by Gold-schmitt on the Oslo district, Norway,' laid the foundation for understanding of the importance of separating the metamorphic process from the subsequent metasomatic stage. Knopf' made a big step forward by recognizing that sulfide ore minerals are invariably younger than silicates and by further stressing the importance of structural control" in ore finding. Some years later Harrison Schmitt" fought the idea that contact metasomatic deposits are erratic, irregular, bunchy, economically marginal, and of small size, concluding that these descriptions have little factual basis. He emphasized the importance of detail mapping and careful geological study as fundamental requirements for a better understanding of these deposits. This article presents a comparative description of the structural features at the Magistral, Antamina, Morococha, Vilca, Ferrobamba, Katanga (Quibio), Tintaya, and Huarca contact deposits (Fig. 1). Further, it will describe how these structural features controlled the emplacement of the intrusives, their shape, distribution of metamorphic and metasomatic halos, and sulfide deposition in post-skarn structural channelways. Finally, the modifications introduced by a superimposed hydrothermal stage recognized at some localities will be discussed. Primary exploration and careful sampling of recognized structural targets were instrumental in outlining the copper ore potential at the Antamina and Tintaya districts, thus proving the benefits and reward of careful geological examinations in this type of deposit. The Magistral District: This district lies in the Province of Pallasca, Department of Ancash, in northern Peru, at 8o 16' S and 77" 47' W. High to medium grade copper orebodies in garnetite, bordering a quartz monzonite stock, are exposed at the bottom of a glaciated valley in the western slope of the Andes at 4250 m (14,000 ft)* elevation.
