"This article explains the ways in which investment on mining infrastructure is a geopolitical issue. It discusses the effect of installing sufficient infra structure to get the product to the world market, and argues that there is a risk involved in depending on traditional suppliers who wish to invest in the infrastructure. It explains how to make a distinction between dedicated purpose infrastructure and general use infrastructure by examining the positions of the main actors in mining projects. It argues that these positions can not be understood as analogous to projects in developed countries. To conclude, infrastructure is a crucial link in the supply chain to market but the relative size of such projects in relation to the economy means that investors decisions in developing countries have quite different implications from those in developed countries."

The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.

"The comminution circuit at Barrick Cortez Gold Mine uses an open circuit primary jaw crusher followed by a standard SABC grinding circuit. The grinding circuit incorporates a 26’Ø x 11’ SAG mill, an Omnicone 1560 pebble crusher and a 16’Ø x 28½’ ball mill. Both mills are driven by 4500 HP motors.In 2007, several comminution circuit studies were performed to assess circuit performance and map a course for improvement. This paper discusses the results of those studies including an analysis of mine-to-mill opportunities, grinding work index efficiency, and ball mill functional performance. Subsequently, improvements to the circuit were made to enhance operating efficiency. Specifically, improvements to the pebble crusher liner configuration, advanced process control system (expert system) and ball mill classification and ball charge are discussed. In addition, other current and future improvement opportunities are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Cortez property is expanding to include the new Cortez Hills open pit and underground mines. Ore from these new mines will be processed in the existing Pipeline mill facility. In conjunction with ore characterization work, performance of the comminution circuit needed to be quantified. Thus, in 2007, the comminution circuit was surveyed and opportunities for improvement identified.Figure 1 below shows the Pipeline mill flowsheet. It is a standard SABC grinding circuit using an open circuit primary jaw crusher followed by a 26’Ø x 11’ (7.92m Ø x 3.35m) SAG mill, in closed circuit with a Omnicone 1,560 pebble crusher, and a 16’Ø x 28½’ (4.88m Ø x 8.69m) ball mill. Both mills are driven by 4,500 HP (3,357 kW) motors. The SAG discharge screen aperture is 5/16” (8 mm) x 1-1/16” (27 mm) slots. Ball mill circuit classification is done with Krebs D20B cyclones."

Compositional data constitutes a special class of quantitative measurements involving parts of a whole. The sample space has an algebraic-geometric structure different from that of real-valued data. A subcomposition is a subset of all possible parts. When compositional data values include geographical locations, they are also regionalized variables. In the Earth sciences, geochemical analyses are a common form of regionalized compositional data. Ordinarily, there are measurements only at data locations. Geostatistics has proven to be the standard for spatial estimation of regionalized variables but, in general, the compositional character of the geochemical data has been ignored. This paper presents in detail an application of cokriging for the modelling of compositional data using a method that is consistent with the compositional character of the data. The uncertainty is evaluated by a Monte Carlo procedure. The method is illustrated for the contents of arsenic and iron in groundwaters in Bangladesh, which have the peculiarity of being measured in milligrams per litre, units for which the sum of all parts does not add to a constant. Practical results include maps of estimates of the geochemical elements in the original concentration units, as well as measures of uncertainty, such as the probability that the concentration may exceed a given threshold. Results indicate that probabilities of exceedance in previous studies of the same data are too low.

Société le Nickel (SLN) exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, and the controls are extremely complex at all scales: lithology, oxidation-reduction conditions, mineralogy, and multivariate geochemistry. In that context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: ? Support effect: the exploration data-set can only warrant the estimation of large panels 20×20×3 m3, which are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5×5×3 m3 ? Information effect: the selection at production stage uses estimates based on information much denser than that available for mine planning. The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for any estimation process (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at mining stage (i.e. the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria involve not only Ni grades but also other constituents such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and SiO2. The solution presented in this paper is the construction of a platform of SMU multivariate simulations in the saprolitic horizon, together with efficient post-processing aimed at producing the multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model (DGM), the validity of which is tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process at the mining stage, by offering the ability to simulate in each block a composite value located at random within the block. Finally, the paper presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream phases (reserve optimization, mine sequencing) of the project. The implementation presented here is for the first generation of the Scenario Reduction plugin built in Isatis software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set is based on Ni quantities only. Research is under way to adapt the measure to the true multivariate nature of the problem.

Kriging is an interpolation technique for predicting unobserved responses at target locations from observed responses at specified locations. Kriging predictors are best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) and the precision of the BLUP is assessed by the mean square prediction error (MSPE), commonly known as the kriging variance. Both the BLUP and the MSPE depend on the covariance function describing the spatial correlation between locations and on specific parameters. The parameters are usually treated as known, whereas in practice they invariably have to be estimated and the empirical BLUP (that is, the EBLUP) so obtained. The empirical or estimated mean square prediction error (EMSPE), or the so called ?plug-in? kriging variance estimator, underestimates the true kriging variance of the EBLUP, at least in general. In this paper five estimators for the kriging variance of the EBLUP are considered and compared by means of a simulation study in which a Gaussian distribution for the responses, an exponential structure for the covariance function, and three levels of spatial correlation ? weak, moderate, and strong ? are adopted. The Prasad-Rao estimator obtained using restricted or residual maximum likelihood (REML) is recommended for moderate and strong spatial correlation and the Kacker-Harville estimator for weak correlation in the random fields.

The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. A deterioration in metallurgical performance at each concentrator occurred as a result, with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues. Investigations to determine the reasons for this problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical deterioration.

The project was aimed at evaluating the double-header trains implemented at Great Noligwa mine, looking at the changes from the old conventional trains to the new trains, and identifying possible improvements to obtain an even better and more productive tramming system. The methods used to evaluate the double-header trains at the mine included personal observations, time studies, personal interviews, technical research, safety analysis, cost analysis, production analysis, breakdown analysis, break test analysis, comparisons and working closely with engineering department and manufacturers. Issues that were evaluated are the improvements in safety, cost reductions, tramming congestion reductions, better efficiencies, labour optimization, enhanced driver safety and maintenance. Shortcomings of the double-header trains were identified and recommendations made to improve on the shortcomings. Findings of the evaluation study indicated the following: ?Drastic improvement on safety ?Extreme cost reductions ?Reduction in tramming congestions and bottlenecks ?Better tramming efficiencies ?Optimized labour placement ?Enhanced driver safety ?More effective maintenance. Although there is room for improvements, the double-header trains were implemented with great success at Great Noligwa mine. It is currently the preferred tramming methodology at Great Noligwa mine, and is also implemented at other Anglo Gold Ashanti?South Africa shafts. This tramming system has huge potential for growth, not only in Anglo Gold Ashanti, but in all other older mines that experience major tramming problems.

The author summarizes and extends the relevant results of papers previously published by various authors and presents these results in chart form. The charts are used to demonstrate the theory on a hypothetical mine.INTRODUCTIONRecently a series of articles have dealt with leakage in a mine ventilation system and the problem of its reduction.Theories were developed by Peascod and Keane (1955) for the combined effect of flow in the airways and leakage through the porous barrier between the intake and return of an ideal mine. Later Keane and Peascoa. (1956) extended these ideas to the use of an underground booster fan in increasing the face ventilation and showed how to determine the water gauge and location of the most efficient underground fan.These articles were based on the assumption that Atkin:son's formula:P = R Q2 (1)gave the relation between the pressure drop P lb'/sq. ft., the quantity, Q kilocusecs, flowing in the mine airways and the total resistance, R Atkinsons, to air flow offered by the mine roadway. An Atkinson is defined as a resistance such that 1 kilocusec of air flows due to a pressure drop of 1Ib.jsq. ft. However for conditions prevailing in most mines a more :appropriate relation is that postulated by Reynolds and others (Lamb, 1953) :P=R Qn (2)where n has some value slightly less than 2. It should be noted that Atkinsons may not be used as units when n is not equal to 2.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine previously used only A-grade material (>60% Fe in situ value) from the pit for beneficiating in the DMS plant to a final product grade of 66% Fe in lump and 65% Fe fine ore. The B-grade (between 50% and 60% Fe) and C-grade material (between 35% and 50% Fe) were stockpiled separately, owing to the inability of the existing DMS plant to beneficiate material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3. The ability to beneficiate the B-grade material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 was evaluated, and air-pulsed jigs were found to be techno-economically feasible and value maximizing. The beneficiation of B-grade material would add to the existing DMS production of 28 Mt/a, with no additional mining cost and only limited costs for the handling of waste and B-material. The objective of the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP), i.e. the jig plant, was to produce 10 Mt/a of saleable product with six modules to the set physical and chemical specifications by 2009. During the start of construction, it was decided to add another two jig modules to the plant to increase production to 13 Mt/a. During commissioning and ramp-up the shortcomings and advantages of the jigs were fully experienced and understood, resulting in many changes to optimize jigging performance..

La unidad de producción de Cerro de Pasco, perteneciente a la Compañía minera del Centro del Perú, cuenta con importantes reservas de minerales piríticos argentíferos que son tratados en la planta concentradora de San Expedito. Dicho concentrado es usualmente empleado como funderte en el circuito de cobre de la fundición de La Oroya. Sin embargo, dada la finura del material, su porcentaje se ha visto reducido. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala una alternativa para recuperar la plata contenida en el concentrado mineral a través de un análisis mineralógico del concentrado pirítico. Posteriormente, se describe el proceso combinado piro-hidrometalúrgico que consiste en la tostación-lixiviación, precipitación con polvo de zinc y la refinación hidrometalúrgica. Finalmente como apoyo a la técnica señalada, se agrega el análisis económico para Centromin.

The Beckman Air Comparison Pycnometer is as accurate as the specific gravity bottle for the determination of the volume of fine powders, or particles, up to 50 c.c. in volume. The determination using the air comparison pycnometer is performed in a much shorter time.A graph of density versus iron content for samples from four different iron ore deposits shows that iron contents can be obtained to within 4 per cent iron. Field geologists should be able to obtain quick and relatively accurate iron contents of ore samples using the air comparison pycnometer at these deposits.INTRODUCTIONA Beckman Model 930 Air Comparison Pycnometer was purchased to decrease the time required for the determination of the volume of stones and powders. The liquid displacement method was used previously and the time required per determination varied from a few minutes for stones to half an hour, or more for fine powders. With the air comparison pycnometer, the determination takes approximately 2 min and can be quickly checked for accuracy by a further determination. When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. "This paper is intended as a review of the progress that has been made in the Province of Ontario in the field of acid drainage waste treatment technology.Three years ago, at the Third Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, we presented a paper entitled ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in Ontario"". At that time I was working for the Ontario Water Resources Commission. The paper turned out to be the very beginning of the Commission's acid mine drainage control program. In the intervening three years, the Ontario Water Resources Commission has been amalgamated with other government groups and has evolved into the present Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Today the Ministry is involved in running one of the most advanced acid mine waste control programs in the world.As a part of its mining program, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment has published three major reports which deal directly and specifically with the industrial waste disposal problems that may arise at a mining operation. In order of publication, these reports are as follows:(1) ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in the Province of Ontario"".This 338-page report covers all aspects of the problem of acid mine drainage and includes detailed sections on acid flow detection, acid flow chemistry and acid flow treatment.(2) ""The Use, Characteristics and Toxicity of Mine-Mill Reagents in the Province of Ontario"".This report, 244 pages in length, gives the chemistry and toxicity of nearly all of the chemicals that find common use in the Canadian mining industry. Most of the toxicity figures quoted are the result of a comprehensive bioassay program that was initiated by the Ministry."

"There has recently been a resurgence of interest in unit flotation of mill discharges. At the Kidd Creek concentrator, this technique has been successfully applied to silver flotation in a 3050 mtpd silver-copper-lead-zinc division. The major incentive has been improved silver payment through increased overall recovery and better distribution between the sequential copper, lead and zinc concentrates. A large, but variable fraction of the silver in the ore is present as native silver and, being dense and malleable, is susceptible to overgrinding. Grinding circuit surveys showed high concentrations of silver in both primary and secondary circulating loads. Laboratory testwork confirmed that this was selectively flotable, identified the secondary ball mill discharge as the best feed stream and optimized flotation conditions. A 10 t/h pilot plant campaign confirmed that the rate of accumulation of silver was sufficient to sustain continuous production of a silver concentrate and that flotation of the whole stream was not necessary.The present 30 t/h production circuit recovers from 5 to 50% of the silver in the ore at a concentration ratio between 25 and 250. The circuit also contributes to a better understanding of ore mineralogy, as an 'on-line' indicator of elemental silver content."

"In the process of smelting copper ores and secondaries in the reverberatory furnace to produce a copper matte and a slag low enough in copper content to be discarded on the dump, it is essential to the best functioning of the process that most of the iron in the material charged into the furnace be at the end in the form of sulphide in the matte or ferrous oxide in the slag. Ferric oxide and magnetite present in the charged material should be reduced to ferrous sulphide or oxide. Ferric oxide offers no difficulty in reduction, at least to the magnetite stage, because it reacts very readily with sulphides at quite low temperatures. Magnetite is less reactive and consequently more resistant to slagging, so that the furnace man must take advantage of all factors favoring its reduction in order to prevent accumulations in the furnace.In order to determine these factors more definitely, the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Department of Metallurgy, University of Arizona, has undertaken at the Southwest Experiment Station an investigation of the effect of various factors upon the rate of reduction of magnetite by ferrous sulphide. A previous paper's reported the nature of the reactions taking place and the effect of various physical factors when only pure sulphide and oxide were present. Since in the actual smelting operation, many other substances are also present, it seemed desirable to make a study of the effect of their presence upon the rate of reduction of magnetite by ferrous sulphide. Such a study has been made; the work done and the results obtained are described herewith.As will be shown later, it has been found that of the substances usually present in the smelting charge, silica and magnesia accelerate, whereas lime, alumina, and cuprous sulphide hinder the reduction of magnetite by ferrous sulphide.No report of a previous laboratory investigation of this subject has been found. Almost all furnace operators have made at one time or another at least qualitative ccmparisons of the effect of various changes in operating oonditions upon the behavior of magnetite in the furnace, but the conclusions derived from the experiments have never been published."

From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. The ultraviolet spectrum of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate (the principal constituent of Dow flotation collector Z-200) in water and of Z-200 itself in water was found to have an absorption peak at 242 nanometers(nm). The height of this peak was found to be directly proportional to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate concentrations up to 15 p.p.m. Z-200 contains about 90 per cent isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate and the heightof the peak was proportionately lower, but obeyed the straight line relationship up to 15 p.p.m. This showed the potential value of spectrophotometric measurements for the determination of Z-200 residuals in flotation liquors.Methyl ethyldithiocarbamate (an impurity in Z-200) increased the peak height slightly, but other impurities in Z-200, xanthates, and most inorganic salts present in flotation liquors do not interfere. However nitrate ion and thiosulphate ion have absorption peaks which overlap the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate peak.The simplest general method to overcome this effect is to extract the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate into cyclohexane and to measure the absorbance of the extract.The maximum absorbance of the cydohexane extract was at 247 nm and the peak height at this wavelength was found to be directly proportional to the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate or Z-200 concentration in the original aqueous solution. An alternative method is to measure the spectrum of the original aqueous solution using the aqueous raffinate from extraction as a reference solution. This gives the spectrum due to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate alone and measurement of the absorbance at 242 nm gives the concentration in the original aqueous solution. Both methods give the same value for the concentration of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate in the original solution.
