Blasting Gallery (BG) method was introduced in India for higher production and low cost of excavation to substitute conventional hand section and stowing methods for thick coal seam. The Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) adopted this method in the year 1989 and since then successfully operating at GDK-10, GDK-8 & VK-7 Incline mines in Andra Pradesh, a southern state of India. It is also successful at Chora 10 Pit Colliery of Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) in West Bengal whereas at East Katras Colliery of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. (BCCL) in Jharkhand State, the method has been partially successful due to some geological constraints of the area.

Image-based remote sensing of rock fragmentation in mining and quarry applications essentially treats each rock in the image as a data object in order to determine the rock size distribution. An obvious challenge after rock delineation in a 2D image is the scale of the delineated objects. Conventionally, either objects of known size are placed in the scene or parallel laser pointer are used, both making some assumptions, to calculate scaling factors. These assumptions are applied to the whole scene rather than sensing individual rock attributes.

For the purposes of this discussion it is assumed that contributors should express the thoughts that arise from their personal experience. So wide is the range of mineral deposits, and so varied the methods employed in their discovery and development, that no two geologists are likely to have been impressed with the same applications of their science. The author's own personal experience has been, during recent years at least, very largely concerned with the broader aspects of the employment of scientific method and geological knowledge to the problems of exploration and exploitation, for the guidance of the general public and governmental authority rather than of mine executives and directors. The view-point thus reached is likely to differ in many respects from that of men who are much more intimately concerned with the mining problems of a single metal or a single mining field, and for this reason a statement may perhaps supplement those from others whose experience has been markedly different.It may well happen that, at some not distant date in the future, when systematic and comprehensive instruction in economic geology is embodied in the courses- prescribed for mining engineers during their years of training, the author's comments will be quitesuperfluous; but at the present time they appear to him to call for expression.The Need for Training of Mining Men in Economic Geology.Contact over a period of many years with mining men who have had different kinds of training and experience has been convincing that there is a general reluctance to acquire a full rational understanding of the geological factors involved in exploratory and developmental problems. The correction of this attitude is regarded as vital to the industry and it is necessary to insist that the outstanding requirement of the present day is the utilization of all branches of geological, investigation in the field and the laboratoryby men who have had systematic and specialized training in these matters. The science of geology is many-sided, but is, nevertheless, whole and essentially indivisible. "INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to obtain information concerning the effects of boron in steel and its method of addition, so that boron, which is readily obtainable domestically, may be used to relieve the great demand for those scarce, strategic, alloying elements that hitherto have been considered necessary for the successful manufacture of quality steel.Previous Work Guillet 4/ seems to have been the first to predict that boron-bearing steel might have a possible industrial use when, in 1907, he published results of an investigation into the properties of steel containing 0.21 to 1.51 percent boron.Possibly Walter 2/ was the first to appreciate the fact that extremely small percentages of boron are effective in improving the properties of a steel. His patent, issued in 1924 claimed steels containing boron within the limits of 0.001 to 0.100 percent; furthermore, the specifications disclosed that boron increased the hardenability of steel and refined its grain structure. In 1937, Naton and Piwowarsky 6/ otherwise observed that boron increased the hardenablity of steel."

Safety is the most important aspect of haul road design. Although other aspects of road installation enter decisions on design, the safety of persons using the road has to be foremost for the duration of haul road usage. Other aspects of mad design focus on minimizing truck cycle time and fitting haul roads to the long-term configuration of the mine/quarry or construction project. Roads are often installed at high gradients for a short-term goal, but the long-term benefits are easily shown with lower gradient haul roads which provide better cycle times and lower operating costs.

The Tati Activox® Project (TA®P) is the first step towards the implementation of the Norilsk Nickel Activox® process. The ultrafine grinding (UFG) and autoclave pressure leach process conditions are the heart of the Activox® patent. Low grade base metal sulphide concentrates are leached in the process to recover the base metals and to produce LME grade nickel and copper cathodes and cobalt carbonates. The downstream processing of the metal-containing liquor produced by this process includes solvent extraction circuits to extract and concentrate metal-rich solutions, before the various final products are obtained. This paper gives an overview of many of the relevant design aspects taken into consideration in the design of the Tati Activox® solvent extraction circuits. It addresses key design elements related to leach process conditions such as scaling, materials selection for corrosive solutions, pH control, crud formation and treatment, multiple SX trains designed to prevent organic cross-contamination, and design aspects related to the mitigation of fire risks.

After scoping out the objectives of this general report, the report reviews the three assigned main themes addressed by the papers submitted to the session: pile monitoring, testing, and data processing. It focuses on later developments and on issues requiring clarification, thereby identifying topics for potential discussion. Pile Monitoring does not bring much novelty, except for the integration of IT on construction sites. As far as testing, new developments focus on internal pile loading procedures while more confidence is being gained with dynamic and kinematic load tests. Significant advances are noted in the interpretation of data, where variability of results are coped with, loading rate effects are being better addressed, and more routine use of Finite element analyses are observed. Several many older problems remain while new issues emerge from more recent technologies and approaches.

Transportation accounts for some 26% of all mine accidents in South Africa. Although this figure may not be as prolific as fall of grounds accidents or accidents caused by seismic events, the enormity of transportation accidents demands attention, especially as many of these accidents are avoidable. This paper investigates vertical (i.e. shaft), horizontal (i.e. haulages), and in-stope transportation systems and their function as it applies to safety. Recent transportation accidents are discussed looking at current trends within the three transportation areas. In the shaft area, discussions will focus on handling of material cars, loading and off-loading of the workforce and management of shaft orepass systems. The horizontal component will focus on personnel transportation, safety around trains and hoppers, and handling of material in the cross-cut. The discussion on in-stope transportation will focus on the general congestion of the stope environment and how it affects the overall movement of personnel, material, and rock. Of concern are the large numbers of material handling and scraper winch accidents that occur and which will be discussed in some detail. The paper will conclude with a section on proposed guidelines within the three above-mentioned systems for mine engineers to consider in mine design and life of mine planning and scheduling. The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

At least three hydroelectric tunnels constructed during the last decade through the lower Himalayan region in India have met with serious problems of supporting in squeezing ground conditions. Steel ribs under went intolerable deformations requiring rectification to provide space for concrete lining which delayed the projects inordinately. In an attempt to choose a rational method of predicting rock load, the authors have compared rock loads estimated from various classification systems and elasto-plastic theory with observed values. The deficiencies of the classification systems have been highlighted to show that the combination of elastoplastic theory and tunnel instrumentation programme provides better guidelines for the design of tunnel supports in squeezing ground conditions.

Encontrar este equilibrio resulta estar entre los tres principales desafíos que enfrentan las grandes minas a cielo abierto, ya que deben lograr la estabilidad de la mina, dando cumplimiento al diseño de taludes, manteniendo al mismo tiempo buenos resultados en términos de fragmentación y productividad de sus equipos de carguío.

Neste trabalho foram obtidos nanocompósitos híbridos constituídos por nanotubos de carbono de paredes múltiplas (MWCNT) e por nanofibras eletrofiadas de nylon 6 em uma matriz epoxídica. Os MWCNT foram funcionalizados com grupamentos carboxílicos e dispersos através de ultrassom na resina epoxídica. A composição resultante foi disposta de maneira alternada com mantas de nanofibras de nylon 6 para formar estruturas compósitas na forma de sanduiches, as quais foram termicamente curadas. Medidas de resistividade elétrica das estruturas obtidas mostraram que uma percolação elétrica entre 0,05% e 0,5% (v/v) de MWCNT foi alcançada. Do ponto de vista mecânico, a incorporação de MWCNT na matriz epoxídica resultou em aumentos de módulo de elasticidade (26%) e na resistência a ruptura (19%), porém, devido a presença de aglomerados de nanocargas, a deformação na ruptura e a resistência ao impacto foram severamente reduzidas para 71% e 33%, respectivamente. Por outro lado, a adição de nanofibras de nylon 6 para formar um híbrido, mostrou-se, bastante promissora ao levar a aumentos de 8% na resistência ao impacto sem ocasionar perdas de módulo elástico, na resistência à ruptura e na deformação na ruptura.

The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. El presente texto señala los aspectos propios de la demasía como concesión minera, prescindiendo de aquellos otros que son comunes a toda clase de concesiones mineras. La demasía se entiende como una concesión que ocupa el área libre existente entre los linderos de dos o más concesiones cuando esta área no permite la conformación de una hectárea. La determinación de su extensión relaciona la colindancia con las concesiones que forman la demasía. Los desplazamientos de las concesiones limítrofes después de delimitada la demasía benefician a ésta siempre que no resulte limite con una concesión que originalmente no era colindante.

The scope of this paper is to introduce a mathematical model based on matrix algebra in order to determine similitude quantities, which can be arranged in specific formats to simulate the field conditions and associated behaviour. The formulation of a typical mathematical model applicable to Geomechanics is demonstrated here. The examples provided are intended to facilitate comprehension and application of the proposed model in practice.

La planta concentradora de minera Las Bambas logró rápidamente, y de manera sostenible, llegar a su capacidad de diseño de 140 Kton/día. Para mejorar el concepto de conminución, se inició el proceso de reducción de tamaño en el manejo de los factores de carga, diseño de mallas de perforación y diseño de voladura del macizo rocoso, debido a la variabilidad de la competitividad del yacimiento que está formado por skarn y pórfidos. Gracias a un trabajo en conjunto, la maximización del sistema de molienda SAG se consigue de manera sostenible con la integración del equipo de voladura en las optimizaciones realizadas en la planta, de manera que se logra incrementar la operación a 150 kton/día, lo que utiliza de manera eficiente la energía de la operación.

Major operating aspects of the Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. treatment plant are discussed with partkular reference to those which are peculiar to this operation.Problems associated with the production of a penalty free uranium oxide product are examined and the methods developed to overcome them are described in detail.INTRODUCTIONMary K,athleen Uranium Ltd. is the largest of the Australian uranium producers. The flow-sheet is based on fine grinding, standard sulphuric acid leach, ion exchange concentration, and magnesia precipitation of the final product, with certain modifications introduced as the result of pilot plant investigations at the South Australian Department of Mines Research Laboratories in Adelaide.The plant commenced operations in June, 1958, attained design tonnlige of 1,120 tons per day in September of that year and has since operated continuously with a throughput in excess of 1,000 tons per day. Pilot plant recommendations generally have been followed, and predicted results have been attained. The only exception has been the silica and rare earth content of the product produced during the early months of operation. Considerable modification of the early resin regeneration techniques resulted in the reduction of the silica content of the product to within specification limits. Research work in the ion exchange section has also resulted in the reduction of the rare earth content of the product to below specification levels. All product now being produced is completely within the agreed specification limits of impurities.

THE following notes, compiled in the first instance for the makers of rock-drIlls, were read by Mr. Hanton at a meeting of the Broken Hill Branch on 12th Septelnber, 1922. It was decided that all Broken Hill mines be asked to give their individual views on the subject, so that a comprehensive Broken Hill view could be published. Replies have been received from four (4), mines to date, and their'ideas fairly well coincide with those set out by Mr. Hapton. His notes were as follow:- "The Zinc Corporation Limited.NOTES ON ROCK-DRILL DEVELOPMENTSAs far as our present experience goes, the rock-drill developments on this mine will probably be something resembling the following. The programme is subject to modification or alteratian, according to circumstances. The results of further trials and improvements in present drills, and the design of new types, will, of course, affect any general scheme such as that outlined. It appears reasonably certain that the 3i-in. reciprocating drills which have done practically all the stoping up to date, will be gradually replaced by hammer drills of the internal water-feed type, and that the existing types of hammer drill on the mine will be converted into internal water-feed machines instead of being used as dry machine with outside jet.The ultimate types of machines will be four... Type 1 would be a machine equivalent to the Ingersoll Leyner: 248, Waugh Turbro, SullivaIi DX61, or Holman CH2. This would be used for driving, cross-cutting, and similar excavating work, and possiblyfor stoping also, and should be capable of efficiently working any class of ground. Features, apart from the general requirements set out later, would be the weight of the machine and mounting height of the machine above the seating (as this affects the convenience of boring back or bottom holes); absence of projections on the mounting which the air hose will foul as the machine is fed...
