This Research & Development (R&D) study was conducted in the field of applied blasting engineering in Ethiopia, within the AKH Railway Project, which was built in Girena, within the boundaries of the province of Mersa, in the Basalt Quarry at km 346, Ashangi Formation, occured in Eocene geological time in the aphanitic trachibasalt. Under the scope of the study, which has been performed to determine the effects of the artificial discontinuities at different depths and the effects of artificial discontinuities through structural damage risk, three test areas, at the same location and same formation, were considered. Six numbers of artificial discontinuities, each 10 m (32, 81 ft) transverse, were created by using pre-splitting and drilling-blasting technology. The number of sequential artificial discontinuities on each test area is two and they have the same length. The length of artificial discontinuities are; 6,80 m (22,31 ft) at the first test area, 13,60 m (44,62 ft) at the second test area and 17,00 m (55,77 ft) at the third test area respectively. The distance between sequential artificial discontinuities is 8 m (26,25ft) on each test area. Thirty-one shots were executed in order to produce vibration (10 shots on the first test area, 11 shots on the second area, 10 shots on the third test area). One hundred and twenty-three seismic recordings were obtained during the execution of the shots by using 4 seismographs. The closest distance between the shot points and the nearest measuring station is 5,30 m (17,39 ft). During the shots, the rock was cracked and there was no fragmentation and/or fly rock. At the first test area, measured PPV values are between 25,40-127,00 mm/s (1-5 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the second test area, measured PPV values are between 76,20-177,80 mm/s (3-7 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 76,20 mm/s (3 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the third test area, measured PPV values are between 50,80-279,40 mm/s (2-11 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. Peak reduction rates in Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values determined by measuring as follows: In the first test area 95,77% (106,00 mm/s to 4,48 mm/s) (4,17 in/s to 0,18 in/s), in the second test area 79,77% (176,00 mm/s to 35,60 mm/s) (6,93 in/s to 1,40 in/s), in the third test area 95,85% (from 205,00 mm/s to 8,55 mm/s) (from 8,07 in/s to 0,34 in/s). The arithmetic mean of the differences of PPV values (decrease rate) is 82,66% in the first test area, 69,37% in the second test area, and 92,03% in the third test area. The highest sound value is 138,50 dB and is defined as “noise”. When the measured parameter values are examined it was determined on the USBM norm graphs that these vibrations carry a risk of structural damage in the region before the first artificial discontinuity. While passing through artificial discontinuities the vibrations progress by losing energy and the vibrations passing through two artificial discontinuities do not carry structural damage risk under current conditions.

Southern Africa has a history rich in the pyrometallurgical processing of ores. Two of the alloys produced are high-carbon ferromanganese (74?83 per cent Mn) and silicomanganese (59?67 per cent Mn and 14?31 per cent Si). The largest land-based manganese ore deposit in the world is based in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. In 2010, 6.3 Mt of ore from the deposit was exported, mainly to China, Norway, Japan, and India, and an estimated 1.1 Mt beneficiated locally to produce manganese ferroalloys. In southern Africa the producers of manganese ferroalloys are Metalloys and Assmang, and of silicomanganese Transalloys, Mogale Alloys, and Match Corporation. Submerged arc furnace technology is utilized in the production of high-carbon ferromanganese (HCFeMn) and silicomanganese, applying the discard slag practice in both instances. The carbon content of HCFeMn is reduced using converter technology and that of SiMn using the Perrin process. Ninety per cent of the world?s manganese ferroalloys production is consumed by the steel industry. The consumption (and production) of manganese ferroalloys therefore closely follows worldwide steel production. From 2001 to 2010, the doubling of the worldwide production of manganese ferroalloys can be attributed to an increase in production capacity in Asia and Oceania, with the largest increase in the production of SiMn. Manganese ferroalloys produced in Asia and Oceania are mainly for the local market, with North America, Europe, Russia, and Turkey the major markets for alloys from southern Africa. The major challenges faced by the southern African manganese ferroalloy producers are increasing electricity tariffs and productivity of labour, which require a concerted effort by all parties involved to achieve a satisfactory solution. THE area dealt with in this paper is included within a radius of about 3 miles of the Poimena township. Several thousand tons of tin have been won from this field, and probably £200,000 spent in exploiting it.PREVIOUS LITERATUREThe field has been reported on by Government geologists on four occasions and several ,articles on it have appeared in the mining journals. En este sentido, se encontró que la calidad de agua es perjudicada principalmente por altas concentraciones de sodio, entre otros, precipitándose como hidróxidos de estos metales debido al pH neutro en el río. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la relación de este impacto químico con los manantiales entre el Cerro Chucapaca y el cañón del Río Ichuña/ Alto Tambo, ubicados al Norte de Moquegua, donde presentan la característica distribución de diferentes tipos de aguas volcanogénicas sobre un sistema de convección hidrotermal de agua meteórica profunda reciclada, calentada y movida por una cámara magmática andesítica que aporta calor y gases.

Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

"INTRODUCTION In accordance with the outline of investigation described in a previous report 5 of the Bureau of Mines dealing with the use of acrolein for detecting leakage of methyl chloride from unit--type refrigerating systems, the work has been extended to include an investigation of its use in a multiple system, This report gives the results of analysis of samples of the gas from representative units of a multiple system charged with methyl chloride containing approximately 0.9 per cent acrolein by volume, The results furnish a basis for estimating the Warning that would be given in event of leakage. Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.

"This paper presents results from the proposed cyanide detoxification circuit for Seabridge Gold’s KSM project. The proposed flowsheet uses a two-stage CCD (counter-current washing/decantation) circuit to transfer the flotation products CIL(carbon-in-leach) barren solution to a SART process (Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling of precipitate, and Thickening of precipitate) to recover copper and free cyanide from the copper cyanide complex. The SART barren solution is then treated by an AVR process (Acidification, Volatilization of HCN gas, and Reneutralization) to concentrate the cyanide that was liberated in SART for recycling to leach. The washed CIL barren pulp (the CCD underflow) is treated with the SO2 /Air process to oxidize residual cyanide.The goal of this complex flowsheet is to recover and recycle as much cyanide as possible and produce a final effluent containing less than 0.5 mg/L copper and CNWAD at the lowest cost. The SO2/air process is capable of achieving low residual CNWAD (<1 mg/L) in the final product, but the persistence of aqueous copper above the target level has been detected in the treated solution in some instances. The expected high concentrations of copper and cyanide in the KSM CIL barren ( >200 mg/L each species) and the difficulties this might create for the SO2 /air process was a key factor in the decision to consider including the washing, SART and AVR steps in the project flowsheet.The target concentrations of CNWAD and Cu were readily achieved after aging the SO2 /air treated pulp, as would occur in a tailing or polishing pond. This suggests no additional treatment will be required to sustain low levels of these species in the final plant effluent."

The primary water supply system for the City of San Francisco and adjacent peninsula areas consists of aging and deteriorated pipelines crossing under the San Francisco Bay (the Bay). This system is highly vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The Bay Tunnel Project will replace the existing system with a 8-km-long (5-mi-long) tunnel underneath the Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using earth pressure balance methods and will have a two-pass lining system of precast concrete bolted, gasketed segments for initial support, and a welded steel pipe final lining. The project challenges include tunneling through both soft ground and rock conditions without any intermediate shaft access over the entire alignment. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake.

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard-rock and mixed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM more than 50 years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates are higher and cutter costs are lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. Disc cutters are used on a range of tunneling equipment, from pipe jacked slurry micro-TBMs less than 1 m (3.3 ft) in diameter to 15 m (49 ft) in diameter, hard-rock boring TBMs. The geological conditions under which they are employed range from sands and gravels, with several bar of water pressure, to extremely hard, massive rock with UCS up to 420 MPa. Regardless of the type of machine or geology, one thing remains constant: changing worn out cutters is costly. When cutters must be changed in the middle of a tunnel, the contractor incurs the cost of downtime as well as the cost of refurbishing or replacing the cutters. In the case of catastrophic cutter failures, the project can be stopped completely for long periods, and the costs mount up rapidly while tunnel production is at a stand still. Catastrophic cutter failures include the occasion when hard-rock disc cutters are failed in groups (called a ?wipeout? phenomenon) and the operator fails to stop the machine, which results in severe damage to the cutterhead. The cause of this can be either an undetected failed cutter propagating damage to surrounding cutters or operator error in steering. Regardless of the cause, the resulting damage can take days or even weeks to repair. When cutters fail prematurely on EPB or slurry machines in certain geological conditions, it is impossible to evacuate the chamber and, therefore, impossible to get [ ] into the chamber to change the cutters. The solution is frequently an unplanned intervention shaft that must be sunk at great cost. The importance of being able to predict cutter life accurately, and in all geological conditions, cannot be overemphasized. For these reasons, cutters have been developed for specific machine types and sizes, as well as for specific geological operating conditions. Different size cutters are required for different size machines. For example, while 483- and 508-mm (19- and 20-in.) cutters are used on large diameter TBMs, it is impossible to employ cutters so large on a small micro-TBM. Also, the cutter must be designed for the specific geological conditions under which it will be operating. The disc cutter rings required to bore extremely hard rock are the most expensive of cutter rings. However, they provide little advantage in weaker rock formations where less expensive rings will do the job as well. It is important to choose the correct cutter for the machine and the geological conditions in order to get the best balance of cost and risk.

IN conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructure of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.

Minerals processing needs a step change in energy efficiency. While the search for new technology breakthroughs is important, huge gains are still available by better using existing research outcomes. This potential remains untapped due to a combination of organisational &apos;silos&apos;, inappropriate performance measurement, and poor science in some areas. It is time to see the elephant in the mill.

This paper details the approach adopted to upgrade the current metallurgical facilities at both the Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in the Republic of South Africa. Goldfields Ltd operates eight metallurgical plants within South Africa of which three have recently been upgraded to replace the older technology previously installed, with modern equipment. This upgrade was undertaken with a view to improving extraction efficiencies and to reduce operating costs. The upgrade was undertaken in a phased approach with the first phase focused on the replacement of the filtration/zinc precipitation processes with modern pumpcell carbon-in-pulp technology. Included in this upgrade phase was the installation of an automated hands-free electrowinning cell, which represents the first commercial application of its kind in the industry. The second phase of the upgrade entailed replacement of the multiple comminution stages previously installed with large SAG and SAG/Ball mill combinations. Due to the rapid return on these projects, a fast-track approach was adopted which necessitated the purchase of available good conditioned second-hand mills from both within South Africa as well as in Australia. Goldfields Ltd is a large mining house with gold mining operations in South Africa, Australia and Ghana. A well advanced PGM exploration project is underway in Finland- Arctic Platinum.

The dissolution of gold in cyanide has been studied, using both chemical and electrochemical techniques. The electro-chemical studies have confirmed that gold may become passive in cyanide solution if its potential becomes more positive than -O&#183; 5 V v. saturated calomel electrode (S.C.E.). The results of the conventional solution rate tests suggest that, although the solution rate is controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen at low oxygen and agitation levels, when these are increased the gold may become passive and its solution rate approach a steady value, or even decrease with increasing oxygen level. The passivity of gold has been shown to be of importance in the solution of small spheres of this metal, and in the extraction of gold from a calcined auriferous pyrite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONAlthough it has been appreciated for many years (McLaurin, 1893, 1895) that dissolved oxygen is a necessary adjunct to the solution of gold by the cyanide process, attempts to quantitatively assess its effect have led to conflicting results. For example, Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley (1934) reported that an increase in oxygen concentration improved the solution rate, but Beyers (1936) claimed that such an increase would reduce the rate at which the gold dissolved.By using an electrochemical approach Kudryk and Kellogg (1954) showed that the diffusion rate of either the cyanide or the oxygen was a controlling factor, and that, if the mole ratio of cyanide to oxygen concentration was greater than 10, the solution rate was proportional to oxygen concentration.These results, although they represent some of the most careful work available, were in direct contradiction to the findings of Mills (1951), who found that gold may become passive in cyanide solution, with a resultant decrease in solution rate.

TBM case histories from over 400 tunnel sections are analyzed presenting a comprehensive application of the Rock Mass Excavability (RME) index (Bieniawski et al.2006). The paper introduces two new adjustment factors, called the Factor of Tunnel Length and the Factor of Crew Effectiveness, which were established to represent more realistically the interaction of the rock mass characteristics, the TBM parameters and the performance of the crew operating the machine. A new correlation is provided for predicting the average rate of advance of double-shield TBMs working specifically in the double-shield mode.

The most important lithium resource in the United States is in the form of the feldspathoid mineral spodumene. This mineral has not been used to any important extent as a source of lithium salts or lithium metal, as other more easily decomposed minerals have b en available in sufficient quantity to supply the relatively small demand. The need for cheaper lithium salts for such promising new uses as air conditioning or dehumidification and of lithium feldspar for use in the glass and [ramic] trades has justified the recent work done by the Bureau of Mines on King available, through improved beneficiation and extractive processes, some of the lower grade but extensive spodumene deposits.
