A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. This report compares the compressed air driven rocker shovel to the newly developed Warthog Non-throw development end loader. The two machines were compared on aspects such as safety, loading potential, energy efficiency and costs. The objectives of the comparison were to determine whether or not the replacement of the rocker shovel with the Warthog will be operationally and financially justifiable. The results from this study were obtained from underground observations and time studies on the machines, as well as consultations and data collection at the shaft and suppliers. This paper compares only the Warthog loader to the Trident 215 rocker shovel used at Anglo Platinum?s Brakspruit shaft and does not compare the other models of rocker shovels, which are fundamentally the same but will have different loading potentials and specifications. Cleaning times for the rocker shovel are based on underground observations at Brakspruit shaft. These times can be influenced by factors such as blasting practices, compressed air pressure and operator experience and skill. For this reason the times will most likely vary at different shafts. The Warthog cleaning times are based on manufacturer specifications and results from trial stages and therefore further work is required to confirm cleaning times achieved.

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted at Mintek for the production of titanium powder from particulate Kroll sponge by the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) process. The aim of this work was to produce titanium powder for powder metallurgical consolidations. The work involved the production of titanium powder at optimized conditions, which included hydrogenation in a horizontal tube furnace at 600°C for 2 hours, milling using planetary and roller mills, and dehydrogenation in a vacuumed retort fitted in a muffle furnace running at 700°C for 36 hours. The titanium powder produced in this project matched the elemental specifications of commercially available titanium powder, except for high carbon content. Nevertheless, the powder has been tested further in mechanical alloying and has been found suitable for the production of powder metallurgical compacts. The recovery of gold from sands and gravels is one of the oldest forms of mining; it antedates history and has been practiced by savage peoples. In North America the search for placer gold has been a powerful agency in the exploration and development of unknown regions and has profoundly influenced the course of our civilization. With the progress of invention, the improvements in machinery, and the availability of large capital for the conduct of great operations, the tendency in placer, as in many other branches of mining, has been toward the working of extensive but comparatively low-grade deposits. The early miner washed the rich spots in stream beds or terraces with his pan, his long tom, and his primitive sluice. Then followed the growth of hydraulic mining and the use of giants supplied with water under pressures of hundreds of pounds to the square inch that could work at a profit gravels whose gold tenor was less than 3 cents to the cubic yard. Finally came the dredge that could handle deposits lying so far below water level as to be beyond attack by other methods. Although the gold dredge was first successful on a commercial scale in New Zealand, it has reached its present strength and efficiency in this country and its development is a monument to the daring, per- severance and technical skill of the many men, mine owners and engineers who have each contributed something to the final result. The Bureau of Mines, authorized to conduct investigations for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the mineral industries, had its attention called some years ago to the need of a comprehensive report on gold dredging in the United States. The director of the bureau recognized that such a report should summarize the development of the gold dredge, should describe in detail the essential features of present-day dredges, should discuss the facts that determine whether a placer deposit can be profitably dredged, and should point out the approved methods of prospecting placer ground and of operating dredges. At the request of the director, the author undertook the preparation of such a report and has been intermittently engaged on the task for several years. This bulletin is the outcome of his labors. He hopes that it will prove of interest to designers and builders of dredges, to mining engineers, and to persons who may contemplate investing capital in placer-mining ventures.

The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted. The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!' the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.

At the Orieco mine quartz veins carrying sulphides were localized in parts of an extensive fault zone in the Mathinna Beds during late Middle Palaeozoic mineralization.These deposits were subsequently exposed, and oxidation of the sulphides by percolating groundwaters resulted in the formation of gossans at the surface, and replacement close to the permanent water table of the more soluble sulphides by copper sulphides (chalcocite, coveIlite). A restricted zone containing copper oxides (cuprite, tenorite), copper carbonates (malachite, azurite), iron arsenates (scorodite, pharmacosiderite) and possibly rare copper sulphates occurred above the water table.The renewed oxidation of these deposits following mine development has been facilitated by the ready circulation of air and water combined with the formation of large free surfaces ideal for evaporation of aqueous solutions. Under these new conditions of high initial sulphate concentration, low pH, and relatively high Eh, the previously formed mineral assemblage is unstable and numerous Cu (Fe,Zn)-sulphates and Fe (Cu,Pb)-arsenates are presently forming in fractures in the fault zone and on the adit and stope surfaces for some considerable distance from the Sulphide-rich ore shoots. The observed spatial sequence of the major sulphates with respect to the sulphide-rich zones (Le. chalcanthite-antleritebrochantite and langite) is consistent with decreasing sulphate concentration and increasing pH away from the oxidizing sulphides.

A study was made of zircon powders bonded with phosphoric acid or aluminium orthophosphate. The influence of strength of solution of the phosphatic binders on the modulus of rupture over a temperature range was investigated. Physical properties of three grades of zircon powder bonded with phosphatic binders were studied at various temperatures. Examination of x-ray diffraction data indicated that phosphates ofzirconia are preferentially formed to phosphates of silica. However, zircon in the presence of excess phosphoric acid also forms phosphates of silica upon heating.Resistance to attack by slags from blast and open hearth furnaces was determined on phosphate-bonded zircon mortars in a cup test with industrially made ladle bricks. Zircon powders bonded with phosphates proved to have high P.C.E. values. The first satisfactory results of a plant trial with phosphate-bonded zircon mortar, used in a steel ladle, are now being assessed in larger scale industrial tests prior to accepting the mortar as a steel plant refractory.

En ese sentido, el presente texto revisa dichos problemas y plantea soluciones respecto a ellos como: diversas mejoras en el régimen de los concursos de las grandes escuelas y duracíón de la preparación, así como una reducción del número de materias enseñadas y la adopción de métodos activos de la enseñanza en lugar de aquéllos que se limitaban a exigir la presencia física de los alumnos.

Laboratory and field work on the use of wetting agents for suppression of colliery dust is described. Although the results were inconclusive they were not discouraging and further investigation is required. The use of certain wetting agents may constitute a healthhazard.INTRODUCTIONCoal dust presents explosion and health hazards to the coal mining industry. The problem of dust suppression is particularly acute where water alone is unsatisfactory for this purpose. "El siguiente estudio revisa la venta, uso industrial y posicionamiento de la antracita dentro de Lima y sus alrededores. En ese sentido, se busca encontrar posibles consumidores de otros combustibles que pueden convertirse en ancracita. Por ello, el campo doméstico se ofrece como la zona más idónea puesto que ofrece una mayor demanda de kerosene, al tiempo que el precio de venta es barato, que en un mercado libre de competencia y con kerosene a precio mundial, es más factible la posición de la antracita dentro del mercado. Otro posible lugar, lo encontramos en las chimeneas para calefacción, puesto que las briquetas de antracita son superiores a la leña u otro combustible y el costo es similar económicamente. En los usos industriales, se conoce que el consumo total de combustible alcanza 286 mil toneladas de petróleo residual y 46 mil toneladas de petróleo diesel, solo si el precio del petróleo desciende entre 360 y 400 por tonelada, la antracita podría competir. Finalmente, en algunas industrias pequeñas, el gas metanizado y construidode antracita en una planta central, es el preferible al del petróleo."

Por tal motivo, se utilizaron métodos físicoquímicos como la vitrificación, electrocinética, y tratamientos químicos que son caros y relativamente agresivos. En ese sentido, el presente texto plantea la biorremediación como un método orgánico que utiliza las especies vegetales para remover contaminantes inorgánicos y orgánicos desde un sustrato sólidos para dejarlos in si tu en formas inocuas.
