The Mokelumne Aqueducts Resiliency Project (MARP) involves construction of a 16.5-mile tunnel across the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta) to replace the existing surface aqueduct pipelines with more resilient conveyance. The tunnel will be bored in Pleistocene-age alluvium at elevations between 100 to 10 feet below mean sea level. At this depth ground conditions are signicantly stiffer and denser than surcial soils and will mitigate potential seismic harards related to liquefaction ground shaking and cooding that could arise from potentially damaged levees. The heterogeneous soil deposits at tunnel depth consist of interbedded layers of stiff to very stiff clay and silt, and dense to very dense clean sand and silty sand.

The White Pine Mine is situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior (Fig. 1). It is east of the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon County. The ore deposit is about 70 miles southwest of the famous native copper deposits of the "Copper Country" lying northeast of Houghton. Geological conditions are different at every mine and create a special set of problems in dilution control. This paper is largely intended to describe the techniques applied in mine dilution control (grade control) at White Pine, and present results of the program. For necessary background information major geologic characteristics of the deposit, particularly those that exert control over the distribution of ore, are briefly discussed. Mining methods are described in considerable detail since applied grade control techniques are adapted to these.

A comminution circuit is an important integral part of a mineral processing plant. Nearly 40% of the capital cost and 30 to 40% of the operating cost are taken up by the crushing and grinding circuit. Therefore, considerable care should be given to the design and selection of this circuit. Several factors affect the selection of a comminution circuit--energy consumption, avail- ability of the equipment, the remoteness of location, and availability of trained personnel, to mention a few. Each of these factors influences the choice. Selecting a comminution circuit strictly on lower capital cost may not be optimal. Crushing and grinding circuits are usually site specific and should be selected - only after careful analysis of all the factors involved. The objective of this paper is to show the effect of these factors, which are extranious to capital cost. Usually, the capital cost of a semiautogenous grinding circuit is lower than that of an equivalent conventional circuit. However, due to lower equipment availability and high power costs in certain locations, the economic advantage of lower capital cost is lost. Analysis indicates that a break even point occurs at a power cost of 5¢/kWh. This paper describes the procedure utilized for selecting the most economic comminution circuit and states the conditions applicable for each cominution circuit.

"Through-the-Earth (TTE) radio has been proposed as a means of emergency communications in mines. The propagation of a TTE radio signal depends chiefly on the subsurface conductivity distribution. Robust forward models of signal propagation can be computed based on a realistic conductivity estimate. These models can be used, for example, to optimize frequency, estimate signal range, identify zones of anomalously strong or weak signals, or to optimize the position of the above-ground TTE radio unit. A method was developed to determine the conductivity distribution of a mine overburden using TTE radio transmission data. At multiple locations in an underground test mine, we recorded a wideband electromagnetic signal, spanning a frequency range of approximately 500 to 8,500 Hz, transmitted from a vertical magnetic dipole at the surface. Using a finite-difference time-domain forward modeling code, a layered Earth conductivity model that accounts for topography was fitted to the observed data, which minimizes the difference between the calculated and observed attenuations for each transmitter-receiver pair, for each frequency of interest. Introduction and objectiveThrough-the-Earth (TTE) radio has been proposed for emergency underground communications. The most common type of TTE radio is based on the transmission and reception of signals by electromagnetic induction. These signals are in the extremely low to very low frequency range — in practice, between 400 and 9,000 Hz. This technology was historically developed for mine safety, although recently other applications have been suggested, such as communications in civilian infrastructure like high-rise buildings or tunnels, in the military, and even for wireless detonation and activation. In a coal mine, which is a setting of particular importance for TTE radio due to the higher risk of accidents, day-to-day communications can be done through a wired link. High-frequency line-ofsight systems, whose signals cannot penetrate rock, are also used for communications from nonfixed points. Another option is a leaky feeder system, which is a permutation of a line-ofsight system and a wired link, where a partially shielded coaxial cable allows the signal to “leak” (Delogne, 1982). In an incident such as a mine collapse or explosion, a TTE radio system can still provide a communication link, as wired systems can be severed, and line-ofsight systems cannot penetrate through collapsed portions of the mine, or to the surface (Forooshani et al., 2013; Yarkan et al., 2009)."

Mining investment decisions are difficult since decision analysis is often based on scarce information. The sources of uncertainty in large mining investment projects are particularly numerous and are present in all evaluation stages. Hence the feasibility decision for projects of this nature will largely depend on how well these sources of uncertainty are managed to achieve bankable risk levels. The risk associated to the construction stages of a mining project is particularly difficult to quantify, mainly because the large number of variables affecting constructive yields, and the complex interactions among constructive resources. This investigation focuses on developing quantitative simulation models and tools to increase the value of a mining project by means of an optimization of the preproduction equipment fleet. The models were validated through their application in the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. The U.S. produces about 34 percent of the world's aluminum yet must import 90 percent of the raw materials needed. There are abundant resources of aluminum-bearing minerals such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, shale, and dawsonite, but none of the numerous processes proposed for recovering alumina from them has yet proved economically competitive with the Bayer process using imported bauxite. To help develop an economically viable process for utilizing these resources, the Bureau of Mines is testing on a common basis several proudsing processing techniques. New improvements and approaches developed by industry and the Government are being evaluated on a mall scale to obtain enough information on which to form a judgment regarding the best processes for commercial adoption. A continuous miniplant having a feed rate of about 70 pounds per hour is being operated now to investigate the nitric acid process for recovering alumina from clay. Parts of this plant will be used subsequently for work on other processes for recovering alumina from clay, anorthosite, alunite, and dawsonite. Initial results of the operation and plans for the overall project will be discussed.

"The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

In Pennsylvania, 310 sampled sites of clay and shale have been evaluated for: potential use, chiefly as structural clay products, refractories, and lightweight aggregate; lithology; physical properties tests; fired tests, both quick-fire and rotary kiln; major-element chemical analyses, and quantitative five-component X-ray mineralogy for quartz, mica, feldspar, kaolinite, and chlorite-vermiculite-montmoril-lonite. Approximately 80 percent of the samples are of some potential use. Of 220 shale samples, 84 were potential lightweight aggregate sources and 83 potential brick sources. Binary correlations of test data versus potential use indicate that certain empirically determined parameters may be critical. These are: lithology, particularly for medium to super-duty refractories and lightweight aggregate; kaol-finite content for refractories versus low-temperature fired product sources; quartz content illustrating that there is an apparently necessary minimum quantity for brick; quartz content, which is low in high grades of lightweight aggregate; mica content, which is low for refractories and possibly high for lightweight aggregate; total iron, which is low for refractories and shows a 40 percent minimum for lightweight aggregate; carbon dioxide, which is low for refractorfes, beneficial in lightweight aggregate, and probably restrictive for some tiles choroite yermicalite, which is low for refractoies and possibly beneficial in lightweight aggregate. In Pennsylvania, clay and shale materials constitute one of the state's major economic mineral resources. To date, the testing program indicates considerable development potential in brick, tile, and lightweight aggregate industries, and perhaps a future potential for aluminum from shales that exceed 20 percent A12Q3.

Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is a software and data communication system developed at the University of Alabama. This system integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis and forecasting of forthcoming events. The main objective of this system is to provide stability information on longwall panels including excessive shield load, low setting pressure, leg leakage and poor shield performance, eminent maintenance problems, etc. Analyses of various mining and geological parameters were also performed to determine past and present roof characteristics and to forecast roof loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. A local coal mine in the Warrior Coal Basin has adopted this system to provide daily evaluation of ground stability and maintenance problems of their longwall panels. Two years of experience with this system is covered in this paper.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live. Over the past few years the rising production costs, shortage of skilled labor, and increased use of lower grade ore bodies have all added justification for the use of on-stream analysis. A rise in the number of on-stream units indicates that this type of assay is now being accepted as a necessity. On-stream analysis is a much more rapid means of obtaining true assays of a flowing product when compared to wet chemistry or "grab" samples dried, briquetted and assayed by x-ray. In contrast, on-stream analysis uses real time samples assayed every 30 seconds while each stream is assayed every 5 to 15 minutes. It is very important not only to know that a change has occurred in the process, but to know what caused the change and how to correct for the change. For example, in a tailing sample the elements of interest comprise between 1% and 10% of the sample. The remainder is water and gangue. Previously the gangue was not assayed nor were the low atomic number elements used for corrections. In addition to the demand for higher accuracies some concentrators were being penalized for excessive Ca or in some cases 5i in their concentrates. This penalty was being imposed by the smelter in order that they could better cope with pollution problems and prolong the life of their furnaces. But until Ca, 5i, and S are measured on-line, nothing can be done about their control. By accurately measuring these light elements on-line, a complete assay is obtained of the total sample providing improved accuracy for the important products. The justification for complete accuracy assays is now even more obvious because they are possible at very 1ittle increased cost and at no increase in analytical time.

The behavior of non-sulphide gangue in chaloopyrite flotation circuits has been investigated. Plant and laboratory tests were carried out on five different ores, and linear relationships were found to exist between the rates of recovery of water and free nonsulphide gangue in the concentrates although there was evidence from pilot plant tests that these were linear approximations to parabolic curves over the limited regions which were observed. There was evidence that the free non-sulphide gangue enters the concentrate by hydraulic classification and a classification function has been proposed to define this behavior. This function is suitable for inclusion in a mathematical model of the process.

Most of the mineral deposits found in North-East India remain unexploited due to inadequate knowledge on their status, economic viability, and requisite mining technologies. The aimof this study is to characterize the multimetallic magnetite mineral deposit from the Nagaland area in India. The quality of iron ore was evaluated to establish its suitability as a raw material for iron production. Detailed studies were conducted to establish the composition and properties of the samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), and petrographic microscopy techniques were employed in the investigation. Shatter and tumbler test was performed for analyzing the mechanical properties of the ore. XRD studies indicated that magnetite is the major mineral with low amounts of martite, maghemite, and quartz. XRF/EPMA results indicated that magnetite contains 35–65 wt.% of iron and 1–5 wt.% of chromium. It also confirms the presence of Ni and Al up to 1 wt.% and Si up to 6 wt.%. Chromite-rich ore contains up to 30 wt.% Cr and 15–20 wt.% of Fe.

"Slope failures that occurred in 2008 and 2009 at the Pikeview Quarry in El Paso County in Colorado in the United States were investigated using three-dimensional discrete element modeling methods. Large-scale block sliding failures occurred along weak bedding planes that dip steeply into an excavation located at the toe of the slope. Several mining sequences at the toe of the slope were simulated to evaluate the effects of various degrees of extraction and backfill on slope stability. Slope stability back-analysis was conducted using prefailure and post-failure conditions to determine the joint shear strength properties. Laboratory testing was also conducted to determine intact rock properties. Three-dimensional discrete element analysis was uniquely applicable to this evaluation because it allowed representation of shear stress of the basal sliding surface and afforded evaluation of several scenarios of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope. IntroductionThe Pikeview Quarry is an aggregate quarry located approximately 8 km (5 miles) northwest of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, CO, USA. The quarry has been operated by several owners since the early 1900s. According to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 1986), the quarry has been a major source of construction aggregate for the Colorado Springs area for many years. In the 1950s, the site was mined by Peter Kiewit and Sons to provide limestone for the construction of the nearby Air Force Academy.A large-scale slope failure occurred on Dec. 2, 2008, which stopped mining activity at the Pikeview Quarry. A second, related slope failure occurred on Sept. 13, 2009. The second slope failure was located immediately adjacent to the initial December 2008 failure.The objective of this paper is to discuss the three-dimensional slope stability evaluation. The causal relationships of slope instability are not within the scope of this publication. However, omitting the precursors to slope failure would limit understanding of the nature of the slope stability evaluation. The regional and local geology and the history of slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry aid in understanding these precursors. Two main failure mechanisms were hypothesized during the failure investigation to explain the triggering of the 2008 and 2009 large slope failures at the Pikeview Quarry, and both of these mechanisms were given equal credence in the present study. Quarry excavation and backfilling was a key factor in the slope instability for both failure mechanisms. The excavation was backfilled in stages in an effort to provide slope support. The objective of the three-dimensional model was to evaluate the effects of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope with respect to slope stability."

Planning and estimating progress rates and costs for tunnelling is always best done based on experience and historic precedent. Much precedent is available but the use of data monitoring, data mining and other retrieval techniques on modern TBM machines can enable this to be further expanded and refined. Advance rates can be related much more closely to rock types as can associated rock bolt and mesh/ shotcrete requirements. This in turn can lead to a further refinement in best likely combinations of equipment, such as shotcrete jumbos, better selected for the anticipated conditions, rather than the potential advance rates of the machine. Efficient and timely construction of the tunnel will also be linked to times needed for finishing work, such as contact and void grouting and to how this can be initiated while the TBM is still in operation, in order to save overall construction time. Indeed, this in turn may affect the most preferable layout and construction details of the permanent tunnel. Considerable experience has been gained in the use of two large diameter TBM tunnel drives through the Himalayas at the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project in Pakistan. All the above aspects will be discussed in the paper based on the considerable experience and data which came from that operation, including appropriate measures in highly stressed areas potentially subject to rock burst.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-yd3) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boom carrier, is used bya 2-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 yd3) of steel-fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per II-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control is performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

A gas–solid fluidized bed using magnetite particles is an effective methodology for coal beneficiation in the field of dry coal cleaning. Broadening the size range of magnetite used in the bed decreases medium preparation cost. In this study, a tapered fluidized bed was used to investigate a magnetite particle size range of −0.5 + 0.074 mm. The results showed that a tapered fluidized bed effectively strengthens mixing of magnetite with a wide size range (−0.5 + 0.074 mm). The results of beneficiation experiments indicated that with increasing tapered angle, separation efficiency increased and then decreased. The highest separation efficiency was obtained at a tapered angle of 10°. The optimal results showed that the ash content of the concentrate decreased from 31.82% to 12.33% with a probable error of 0.11, which indicated that a tapered fluidized bed was efficient to improve fine coal beneficiation performance.

Mineralization features at the Bajo La Alumbrera porphyry copper-gold deposit are discussed as they affect gold leaching and copper flotation behavior. Alteration-mineralization geological blocks are assigned in the zoned body, and each required its own geostatistical model. They extend horizontally outward from potassic to the phyllic-propylitic boundary, vertically from surface down to 300 meters, and include oxide, secondary enriched, and hypogene mineralization. Copper and gold values are calculated geostatistically from assays and all available geologic-mineralogic information. Reserves are classified for each geologic block and for each open-pit bench into leach or float ore according to metal grades, geologic characteristics, and supergene-hypogene relations. Finally ore extraction behaviour is briefly described, grouping gold and copper reserves into metallurgical families.
