"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. Over the past 30 years, the coal industry has been continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning fine coal to acceptable ash and sulfur contents while maintaining maximum product yield. The flotation process has been part of this effort and its importance is expected to grow as new utilization technology demands finer and purer coal products. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger effort aimed at development of new and improved flotation systems for removing sulfur and ash from as-mined coal as well as for producing super-clean coal for future markets. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of flotation.

INTRODUCTION Classification of coal seams as thin, medium, and thick is both subjective and relative and is more a reflection of the statistical mode of the thicknesses en- countered in a mining region. A geological factor more precisely understood as defined than thickness is the inclination of the seams to the horizontal, commonly referred to as the pitch or the dip of the seam. Thick and steeply pitching seams present far more challenges to the ingenuity of the mining men to devise methods for their extraction than the thick and less steeply inclined ones. In a marginal case, where a thick coal seam may be minable by surface or underground methods, the decision bears a close relationship to the technological developments in the mining scene. Near surface thick coal seams are a special gift of nature and are not as wide- spread as the ones that call for the application of under- ground methods. Recent advancements in surface mining equipment have made it possible to surface mine to great depths. Stripping ratios of 30: 1 (cu yd of over- burden removed per ton of coal) have been achieved. The extraction of thick seams which preclude the use of surface methods is the concern of this chapter. Specifically, the objective here is to outline the special technological factors in underground mining of thick coal seams and to illustrate through several case histories the methods that are practiced in the North American continent. For the purposes of this chapter, a thick seam is defined as one which is not readily minable with currently available equipment without modifications to the extraction method or the equipment. At the present time, a thickness of 4.8 m (16 ft) can be considered as the lower limit, although developments in equipment and methods can be expected to push this limit upwards. The data for the case histories were collected from two extended mine visits in 1975 and 1978, and from other published accounts of the mines visited. Reference is drawn particularly to reports by Bise, Ramani, and Stefanko (1976) and Rarnani and Kenzy (1979). THICK SEAM MINING METHODS The various methods of mining thick seams can generally be grouped into three major categories: full face methods, where the entire thickness of the seam is re- covered in a single pass; slicing methods, where the seam is extracted to its full thickness by horizontal or inclined slices either in an ascending or descending order; and caving methods, where the seam is undercut and the en- tire coal seam is recovered by caving the top coal into the excavated cut, or some variations of the basic sub- level caving method. As shown in Table 1, in each of these methods, the coal is removed by either room-and-pillar or longwall methods. Hydraulic mining and transport of the coal in open flumes or in pipelines are also practiced. Addition- ally, the void created by the removal of coal may be filled with a packing material (stowing) except in the caving methods. The pitch (dip) of the seam, particularly when it is greater than 0.26 rad (150), imposes severe operational limitations on mobile equipment. The area of Canada with which we are here concerned consists of Yukon Territory and Northern British Columbia. Generally it lies west of the coastal mountain range and access to the sea can be gained at only selected points which are relatively few. It is served by the Alaska Highway as well as a provincial and territorial system of roads permitting transport of mining products to Whitehorse in Yukon Territory. This town it the northern terminus of the White Pass and Yukon Route, which system provides a rail service between Whitehorse and Skagway, Alaska a distance of 110 miles, and thence to Vancouver, British Columbia, by the coastal Motor Vessel C. J. Rogers, a distance of an additional 890 miles. At present the service between Vancouver, B.C. and Whitehorse, Y. T. is on a fourteen day basis. The coastal vessel, capable of carrying 3,200 tons of cargo, was specially designed and built in 1955 for handling containerized cargo and general cargo northbound, and containerized and palletized asbestos fibre, and palletized lead and zinc concentrates southbound.

The business of mineral exploration and development has become much more than simply a problem of locating orebodies and designing mines. Favorable economic analysis of mining and processing feasibility is no longer sufficient to justify the development of a mine. New laws, enacted by virtually every level of government, require comprehensive land use planning, environmental analysis, mineland reclamation, mine safety studies, and many other considerations. This profusion of new laws says in effect, that the mining company is no longer responsible only to its stockholders. Mineral development today can be compared to a partnership. As in all partnerships, the risks and liabilities as well as the benefits are held jointly by all the participants. In addition to the mining operator, this partnership consists of the public, through its many levels of government, interest groups, and individual citizens. Therefore, you'd better know your partner very well - his responsibilities and capabilities. Mining is considered a high risk venture. The risk on the part of the operator and the lending institutions has long been recognized. The risk that the public and its government take in these mining ventures has now been recognized also. The people and their government have learned that they inherit, through abandonment or forfeiture, the mistakes and problems of individuals and companies regarding these natural resources. In looking through the "Mining Engineering Handbook" recently published by the Society of Mining Engineers, I noted that in their discussion of liability for excavations, the authors quoted from the book of Exodus, 20th chap., where Moses said to his people: "When a man leaves a pit open, or when a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls into it, the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to its owner, and the dead beast

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35°C (95°F) [1]. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by >5.6°C (10°F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35°C (95°F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy. INTRODUCTION The apparent temperature inside an occupied RA could be significantly affected by the surrounding environment’s thermal conditions, such as mine air temperature and mine strata temperature. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and air velocity. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures. Depending on factors such as geographic location and season, mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata, temperatures can vary significantly [2]. RAs located in cold mines may pass the 96-hour 35°C (95°F) AT limit test that poses a challenge for RAs located in hot mines. One solution in these cases is that the occupancy of the RA could be derated (i.e., the RA occupancy could be reduced) to ensure the AT limit is not reached. However, this would require mines to purchase additional RAs to accommodate all personnel in the mine. For mines with high temperatures (above 26.7°C or 80°F), the occupancy might have to be reduced so much that the necessary number of additional RAs would be impractical. In these cases, RA cooling systems could provide a solution.

This paper describes several variants of placement and design, from a technical and economic point of view, of shafts, ore bunkers and drifts near shafts of a Russian potash mine. Advantages and disadvantages of the position of different workings are shown as well as an analysis of stratigraphic and geological layers and their use for excavating pit bottoms, haulage drifts and bunker installations. The potash mine consists of two hoisting shafts and one service shaft. The hoisting capacity of one of these skip shafts is planned to be approx. 7 Million tons of crude potash salt per year. Both shafts together will have a hoisting volume of about 14 Million tons. When the mine will increase their highest level of production, it will be one of the biggest potash mines in the world. The skips, the hoist drives and the bunker near the shaft will belong to the largest ones worldwide, too. This paper specifies the features of such a double skip shaft pit in detail and demonstrates problems, which depend on the fact that the pit bottom is in a depth of nearly 1200 m.

"The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is implementing its $2.6 billion DC Clean Rivers Project to reduce combined sewer overflows to the District’s receiving waterbodies and mitigate chronic sewer flooding in District neighborhoods. The First Street Tunnel project is a major component of the DC Clean Rivers Project, designed to mitigate sewer flooding and basement backups in the District’s historic and densely populated Bloomingdale neighborhood. Bloomingdale has been historically affected by sewer flooding and was severely impacted by four storms in the summer of 2012 that caused significant damage to homes, the environment and public property. As a result, DC Water accelerated the design and construction of the First Street Tunnel in order to mitigate the effect storms have on the undersized sewers serving the neighborhood. The infrastructure designed to mitigate flooding, including the tunnel, are located within the highly urbanized neighborhood – with some structures being less than ten feet from residents front door steps. The success of a large public works project of this magnitude and in this unique location depends on a well informed and supportive public. With the local community impacted by flooding but concerned about heavy construction impacts, this paper details the components of a successful public outreach plan and lessons learned throughout the design and construction process. Early identification of community mitigation, working cooperatively with stakeholders and frequent dissemination of accurate information required the project team to establish a culture of problem solving collaboration with the community. BACKGROUND Chronic Flooding in the Northeast Boundary Sewershed The Northeast Boundary sewershed, in which the Bloomingdale neighborhood is located, is served primarily by a combined sewer system and has a long history of chronic flooding problems during moderate to severe storm events. The sewer system that serves the Northeast Boundary drainage area was constructed by the Federal Government in the late 1800's when developed areas of the District terminated at what is now Florida Avenue. Since construction of the system, population within the sewershed area has grown at an exponential rate. In meeting the growing needs of the population, the District experienced development that transformed previously low-density rural areas into new communities. Impervious areas have increased drastically since the sewer system was constructed and consequently, the existing sewer system does not have the capacity to convey storms with return frequencies beyond the 2-year storm without flooding. As a result of the capacity limitations, many of the low-lying areas have become chronic flooding areas due to the surcharging of sewers."

Rosario Dominicana, S. A. operates an 8,500 tonne per dayopen pit gold/silver mine in the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The mine is located in an agricultural area which is also an earthquake and heavy rainfall zone. In the 64 years from 1910 to 1974 there were 19 earthquakes within 300 km of the mine in the range of 6 to 8 on the Richter scale and the most recent earthquake in this range occurred in March, 1979. Average annual rainfall in the area is 1.7 m and is distributed throughout the year. Safe and environmentally sound tailings disposal in such conditIons has demanded the buiIding of an extremely strong dam wall and use of a fail-safe system of tailings disposal and solution reclaim. The type of dam, the system of tailings disposal and solution reclaim comprise an interesting example of the manner of handling tailings for a medium tonnage mine. The system is relatively costly but does assure a long-term, safe and trouble free structure and operating system. General views of the dam wall and tailings pond are shown in Figures l through 4.

The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. Geologically, coal measures were deposited from the lower Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian of the US) and Permian of late Paleozoic, mainly during the Jurassic of the Mesozoic and peri¬odically throughout the Cenozoic. Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). In Situ leaching for the recovery of uranium from low grade sandstone deposits is one of the newest technological advances in the mineral industry. It is rapidly developing into a commercially feasible mining system which has economic, environmental, and social advantages over conventional mining systems. Because of the current uranium shortage, development of In Situ leaching into a sophisticated system has gained new impetus. In Situ leaching will become an important mining technique in the future, which will greatly help to supply uranium for our nation's energy heeds. In this paper, I will be giving an overview of the merits of the system, as well as the technology, problems, and research in solution mining of uranium.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain Ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 kilometers. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fibre in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd. Of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This paper will present the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits will be outlined. Subsequent work by other companies will be mentioned, but not described in any detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., who have been involved in the project, particularly Ramon Farmer, N. G. Comer, and A. W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this report are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program.

The Westerly Storage Tunnel is a 25-foot diameter segmentally lined storage tunnel that is a major component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's Project Clean Lake that is designed to capture 39 million gallons of untreated CSO overflows from entering Lake Erie. During the final stages of the project completion, a large-scale rock fallout incident occurred during the final lining installation operations at the down-stream end of the tunnel that extended beyond the designed primary support system. This paper outlines the level of coordination and collaboration between the Owner, Designer and Contractor to remediate the situation safely, quickly and effectively.

An experimental study was carried out to compare the results of laboratory column flotation versus conventional flotation for the cleaning of fine coals of different rank and their oxidized samples as well as discrete size fractions. Surface oxidation caused a significant reduction in the flotation yields achieved with both methods. However, the column flotation produced concentrates? of lower ash content. The recovery -size curve achieved with column was similar in shape to that obtained with conventional cell, with superior results in the region of fine fractions. The influence of some column operating parameters was also discussed.

There has been a steady increase in shiploading capacities in the last 20 years. One of the reasons has been the general increase in ship sizes, with the largest vessels currently around 280,000 DWT in the bulk trades. Obviously, the large vessels can accept loads faster and their economic utilization justifies higher loading rates, up to a point. The high capacity facilities have loading rates far beyond this point. The economic logic of these facilities is based on the fact that for a given annual throughput the capital and operating cost of a single high capacity system is less than that of two smaller systems. Thus, where the projected throughputs are large, there is a great incentive to reduce capital costs by maximizing capacity. Tubarao, in Brazil, designed for a 100 million ton per year throughput with one finger pier and one high capacity berth is a successful demonstration of this approach. In the current state of the art, the high capacity systems have shiploading capacities in the range of 10,000 - 16,000 TPH, for annual throughputs of 20 million tons and larger per loading berth.

Public Service Company of Oklahoma began burning sub-bituminous coal in December, 1979. Initially PSO had a single source coal supply from Jacobs Ranch Mine, and in 1982 added deliveries from Clovis Point mine. Both are Powder River Basin (Wyoming) coal mines. In 1986 PSO began burning Oklahoma coal to meet Oklahoma's 10% native use law. PSO experienced random s lagging during certain blends of these coals. PSO installed a boiler performance system to help control the slagging problems from the various coal blends, to improve boiler efficiency, and increase total coal consumption.

The promulgation of Federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing Federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

This paper addresses the state and federal permit- ting requirements and regulatory constraints associated with the development of new "grass roots" surface coal mines in the Western United States. Since a major portion of new coal development in the West will be on federally leased coal in Wyoming, my comments are directed towards that geographical area. This will give the reader some insight into the current regulatory framework within which western mining companies must operate-i.e., the major applicable state and federal laws and regulations, the more important state and federal regulatory agencies, and the major construction and operating permits that are required. Before discussing the impact of the regulations on our business, I would like to tell you something of my company and then briefly discuss Exxon's forecast of the long range outlook for coal. Carter Mining is an Won affiliated surface coal mining company. Exxon became interested in the coal business in the mid 1960's with the recognition of the future need for alternative fuel sources. Since that time, it has acquired coal reserves located in Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Arkansas, Texas, Illinois and West Virginia. Carter's first surface mine, the Rawhide Mine, located north of Gillette, Wyoming began production in August, 1977. Our second surface mine, Caballo, located just south of Gillette, began operating last October. We have a third block of federally leased coal just east of Gillette. By 1985 we anticipate Carter's western surface mines will be producing at an annual rate of 30 million tons, subject, of course, to successful market development efforts and regulatory considerations. Rawhide will ultimately have a permitted capacity of 24 MM tons per year. The coal at Rawhide is in two seams; one 80 feet in thickness and the other 20 feet (including a 6 to 10 foot parting). A large shovel is used to remove the overburden, and a similar shovel and dragline are used to mine the coal. Caballo has a 75 foot seam; otherwise it is similar in design and operation to the Rawhide Mine.
