The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining’s East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and RailSystems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km(3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

Over 2 million tons of steel furnace dusts are produced each year in the United States. Recycling of these dusts rather than disposal would conserve mineral resources, reduce land requirements for disposal, and decrease pollution. In addition to the iron content, the dusts contain appreciable amounts of zinc and lead. Removal of lead and zinc with simultaneous reduction of Iron oxide has been achieved by inert atmosphere roasting of carbon-containing pellets prepared from steel furnace wastes. High- and low-carbon wastes were blended to obtain mixtures with sufficient carbon to serve as a reductant during subsequent roasting. The mixtures were pelletized with the addition of bentonite and water, and the dried pellets were roasted in a stream of nitrogen at temperatures ranging from 900" to 1,150° C. Zinc and lead contents were reduced to the 0.1 percent level or less by roasting mixtures containing as little as 7 percent carbon for 1 hour at 1,100° C. ton metallization increases with available carbon content; 50 percent metallization is achieved with 7 percent carbon, 85 percent metallization with 12.5 percent carbon, and over 95 percent metallization when the pelletized mixtures contained in excess of 20 percent carbon.

Terminology. The term potash originated in "pot ashes" produced by burning wood to ashes in iron pots and then leaching out the soluble salts, chiefly potassium carbonate, from the residue. In modern usage potash is a generic term for various potassium salts used in agriculture and industry. More specifically, it denotes the oxide of potassium, K2O, and the content of potassium in ores and products is stated as weight percent of K2O present. Its salts are commonly referred to as muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. The presence of an adequate supply of available potassium in the soil promotes the health and improves the quality of the plant. insures greater efficiency in photosynthesis, increases resistance to certain diseases, offsets the effect of an oversupply of nitrogen, and helps the plant to utilize soil moisture more advantageously. ("Soils and Men," U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook 1938.) Occurrence. Potassium ranks seventh among the elements in abundance. It is estimated to constitute some 2.6% of the lithosphere and is found in soluble forms in the oceans, lakes, rivers, and subsurface waters. It is also an important constituent of plant and animal life. Commercially significant accumulations of potassium salts occur in underground deposits formed in past geologic times by evaporation of ancient bodies of saltwater, inland drainage basins, and shallow sea lagoons. The potash content of such waters was the end result of weathering and leaching of insoluble potash-bearing aluminosilicates, such as feldspars, micas, leucitcs, and others. The concentrations of potassium salts in the natural brines of some lakes in the arid and semiarid regions of the continents are also important as sources of potash; the brines of the Dead Sea in Asia Minor, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and Searles Lake in California typify such concentrations. Every continent has major potash deposits as listed in Table 1 adopted from Cawley.1

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). Recently (5) polymers have been successfully used in oil well drilling muds then the requirements were mainly to suspend and transport cuttings during the periodic shutdowns and dril1ings respectively. "Recent regulations, as well as a general aversion to central dust collectors within the Powder River Basin Coal user’s community, have created a need for an alternate method for eliminating airborne dust. This paper addresses the capital expenditure as well as the cost of ownership of an integrated point source air cleaning system in comparison to a central collection system. This assessment was conducted by comparing the cost to purchase and operate a central dust collection system and integrated air cleaner system on a typical multiple transfer point application. The central dust collector consists of a negative pressure blower, a series of filter bags, a collection hopper, a screw conveyor to place collected material back into the material stream, and a series of ducts to pull air and dust from individual pickup points. The point specific integrated air cleaners consists of a negative pressure blower to pull dust and air from an application point through a bag-less filter media located at the application point. The agglomerated material is then redeposited into the material stream at point of use without the need for ducting or a central material hopper. The assessment yielded a 54% reduction in capital expenditure and a 26% reduction in operating costs for the same application when using individual dust filters as opposed to a central system. In addition to the lowered cost, there are reductions in risk associated with the elimination of ductwork and the central containment enclosure for collected explosive dust. By the conclusion of this paper, the reader will have a better understanding of the quantifiable differences between a central dust collection system and a set integrated air cleaner systems. BACKGROUND Spillage has always been a problem in the bulk solids handling industry. As long as there have been conveyors, there has been spillage. Spillage is material that falls off a conveyor belt and creates a hazard in the environment around a conveyor belt."

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. "Location. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. The concept of green mining is to improve the mining industry in a holistic way so that it is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. The purpose of this study was to develop an evaluation index system of green surface mining based on the theory of green grades. The evaluation model is comprised of three attributes (safety, efficiency, and environment), nine criteria, and 35 indicators. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to determine the weights of indicators by taking into consideration degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality. Findings indicate that the environment is the most critical aspect of green surface mining, followed by efficiency and safety. The top five ranked green mining success indicators were the application of new technology, starting-off-rate of equipment, science and technology input to total investment, the number of accidents (decreased), and the production (increased). It was observed that more improvements are needed to overcome water, air, waste, and sound pollution. Attention should also be paid to land reclamation and post-mining land uses, which are key factors in green mining. The proposed model can be applied to evaluate and improve the level of green surface mining in other regions. This study provides a tool for decision-makers that can offer technical assistance to green mining.

As the total cost of labor has significantly increased over the past ten years, older underground mines have found it more difficult to compete- in a limited demand coal market. Many of the older mines were developed extensively into a reserve requiring a large number of workers to maintain and rehabilitate extensive track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, a large number of fans were required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. This paper focuses upon problems which beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Not only is 1971 the Centennial Year of the AIME, but it also marks the One Hundredth Anniversary of the United States Portland Cement Industry. On September 26th in 1871 David O. Saylor of Allentown, Pennsylvania, received his patent Numbered 119,413 for the manufacture of portland cement. "Cement" had been used in the United States before that. This was, however, natural cement - a direct product of rocks as found in nature, usually burned at low temperatures in open kilns. During the early 1800s this natural cement played an important role in such projects as the building of the Erie Canal. It was only after the Civil War that small amounts of high priced portland cement was imported from Europe. The successful use of this material in construction led to Saylor's experiments and subsequent patent for the manufacture of a scientifically controlled product in this country. These one hundred years have witnessed four major "ages" of cement . . . three of them occurring in the last quarter century since World War Two. The first age was the "Age of Development", a seventy-year period which saw the growth of cement and its concrete end uses as major construction materials. Next followed a period called the "Age of Demand" when, after the war, cement became in short supply relative to large building requirements. In effect a cement shortage existed. The decade of the Sixties proved to be the "Age of Reaction", with its courses of action coming in response to the problems that arose when the industry's expansion programs provided too much capacity. Today cement, and the concrete industries, find themselves entering the "Age of Reason". "Since ancient times, storing and conveying water via underground water systems and tunnels has been touted for its strategic advantages. Underground cisterns and tunnels assured protection of essential fresh water supplies from man made contamination and especially from enemies who would gain an advantage by disrupting an adversary’s water supply in a siege. Modern day engineers do not usually specify tunnels for reasons of avoiding deliberate contamination or siege — however, they are just as enamored with the idea of building tunnels for water conveyances.Such was the case for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). The SFPUC provides drinking water to 2.6 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The SFPUC’s water system includes 257 km (160 miles) of transmission pipelines and tunnels from the SFPUC’s largest reservoir, the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir inside Yosemite National Park, to San Francisco. About 129 km (80 miles) of the system consist of tunnels. A 30-km (19-mile) section of the tunnel network, called the Mountain Tunnel, was thought to be at risk of a catastrophic failure in its concrete-lined section of 18 km (11 miles). For much of the project planning process, a new replacement tunnel was presumed to be required according to the tunnel planners.Originally constructed between 1917 and 1925, the Mountain Tunnel has been in continuous service since 1925. The 30-km (19-mile) tunnel is located downstream of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir water source in Yosemite National Park, between the Early Intake and Priest Reservoir (Fig. 1). Approximately 18 km (11 miles) of the tunnel is lined with unreinforced concrete. Though the condition of the tunnel was being monitored through water sampling and periodic inspections, there was growing concern that the tunnel lining was at risk of a partial collapse that could interrupt water delivery for up to nine months. The SFPUC was faced with a decision to construct a new bypass tunnel to replace the lined section of the Mountain Tunnel or to rehabilitate the existing tunnel."

In the article "Concentration of Oil Shale,"(1) Dr. N. Arbiter stated, "One of the major factors in the delayed utilization of oil shale as an energy raw material is the low grade or content of hydrocarbon (kerogen) in oil shale as compared with coal and even more so to the liquid and gaseous fuels. " When the availability of high-grade deposits decreased, mineral industries started adopting prebeneficiation procedures for the low-grade deposits. This practice, which is becoming standard in these other industries, has been largely overlooked by the oil shale industry in its drive to produce oil from oil shale. If a major portion of this mineral matter can be removed, there can be potentially large savings in the capital and operating costs of oil shale retorts. Moreover, the environmental impact, associated with recovering the shale oil, could be reduced considerably. In 1980 Roberts & Schaefer Resource Service (RSRS) completed successfully the first set of demonstration runs with a 20-ton oil shale sample from Cathedral Bluffs (C-b tract), Colorado. This relatively low grade (~12 gpt oil content) oil shale was beneficiated applying the Dutch State Mines Heavy Medium Cyclone process. (2)

"Electric and hydraulic shovels are the dominant loading machinery in surface mining operations. Despite their critical role in production and their high capital and operating costs, no reliable and comprehensive quantitative performance metric is available. In this paper, a stochastic shovel effectiveness (SSE) measure is proposed for the purpose of quantifying the performance effectiveness of these shovels. The SSE is based on the widely used method of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in the manufacturing industry. The OEE measures the performance effectiveness of equipment by multiplying its mechanical availability, utilization and production quality. In manufacturing processes, quality rate is the ratio of the total number of products minus the number of defective products – equivalent to the number of acceptable products – to the total number of products. The SSE similarly uses the mechanical-availability and utilization terms, but instead of quality rate it uses a new parameter named bucket rate.The variability or randomness of the input data, that is, availability, utilization and bucket rate, are further incorporated into the SSE, and a final stochastic SSE distribution is derived in the form of a probability density function. One hydraulic and one electric shovel in a surface mining operation were selected to test the validity of the proposed method. The SSE scores for the two shovels, operating continuously for one year, were derived and compared. As with the OEE, the three-parameter SSE method yielded more representative results for overall performance measurement than a single-parameter approach. Using Monte Carlo simulation, a three-parameter Weibull and a normal distribution were derived for quantifying the overall effectiveness of hydraulic and electric shovels, respectively. As a decision aid, the proposed methodology promises to render a more informative tool than traditional metrics for mine equipment maintenance and management."

"During his presentation at the 2016 George A. Fox Conference about the history of public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the tunneling and underground construction industries in New York, Vincent Tirolo, Jr., told a story about how, as a young engineer in the late 1960s, he and others pooled money to purchase a calculator for $75 that had the ability to perform sine and cosine functions. That was a big deal in those days and would make their job much easier. Oh how far things have come. Tunnel and underground construction engineers can now virtually map out and plan entire projects before the first shovel ever breaks ground. And the machines that are used to build the tunnels have advanced in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago.The calculator is just one example of innovation in the industry and on Jan. 26, more than 400 industry professionals attended the George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center of New York (CUNY) to learn more about the next innovations, new tunneling technologies and what the future might hold for the industry. The conference included sessions on contracting models, rescue and fire life safety and new technological developments as well as an international project spotlight presentation from Nasri Munfah about the Eurasia Tunnel, connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Turkey.The project, also known as the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing project, was named the 2015 Major Tunneling Project of the Year by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association.The tunnel boring work for the 3,344-m (11,000 ft) long tunnel under the Istanbul Bosphorus Strait was completed in August, heralding a new era in tunneling.Tunnel boring work was launched in April 2014 with a ceremony with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. The work was completed on Aug. 22, 2015 with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu participating in the ceremony."

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling involves the creation of a computation domain called a mesh or grid to solve the equations defining the physics of fluid flow. This process often comprises the majority of time spent in modeling efforts. In a project sponsored by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines used an innovative meshing approach, allowing easy adaptation of the CFD model to adjust to a variety of longwall bleeder-ventilated and progressively sealed (often referred to as bleederless in the United States) mining geometries, with gob porosity and permeability scalable over a wide range. This paper presents the methodology of the meshing and scaling approach along with recommendations for using CFD modeling in longwall gob ventilation applications. The new meshing technique was utilized to evaluate the function of a back return in a progressively sealed gob and a bleeder-ventilated gob.

In an effort to advance the science underlying modern coal pillar stability analysis, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are currently involved in research aimed at better understanding the impact of an in-seam rock parting on the strength of coal pillars. The purpose of this study is to determine a suitable virtual mining height that could be applied using current pillar stability analysis tools. To accomplish this, the boundary element model LaModel was used to back analyze data collected on pillar performance in a room-and-pillar panel at the Maple Eagle Mine located in Southern West Virginia. In a previous work, data collected from borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and extensometers were taken from three instrumentation sites. Data collected from the back bleeders were used to measure the rear abutment stresses, and data collected from two instrumentation sites in the wraparound bleeder were used to measure the front and side abutment stresses as well as the peak strength and performance of the slabbed leave pillar. The utilization of two nearly identical instrumentation sites in the wrap-around bleeder provided much needed repeatability of the obtained measurements. In this study, the data collected from BPCs at the three instrumentation sites was calibrated to match the Bieniawski pillar stress gradient. To model the measured pillar behavior, the LaModel program was selected due to its capability of being directly comparable to the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) and Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) programs. The model was then calibrated to match the measured abutment extent and abutment stress. Finally, the model was validated by reducing the modeled mining height until the yielding of the slabbed leave pillars in the model matched what was measured in the field. The final calibrated mining heights show that a reduction of the shale parting thickness, not including any clay layers, of 52% is applicable. This research study provides the first known measurement of the ARMPS/ACPS “50% Rule” and its applicability to this panel of the Maple Eagle Mine. This finding provides a proof of concept and could have significant implications for future research.
