Since 1965 several researchers have independently developed computer models for designing gathering belt and surge bin capacities in underground coal mine belt systems. Table 1 summarizes the models applicable to U.S. mining systems. Most of the models, employ the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Basically, the belt loading at each loading point is randomly produced from probability distributions. In some cases, a combination of deterministic calculations and probability distributions are used to simulate the loading. Once the loading is simulated, it is systematically moved through the belt system in a deterministic fashion based on belt speeds, belt lengths, and storage bin discharge rates. The coal flowing from each loading point is tracked as it moves through the belt system. When the loading from tm different sources combines on a belt or in a surge bin, checks are made to determine if capacities have been exceeded. If capacities have been exceeded the amount of spillage is calculated. At the end of the simulated time period, the cumulative spill- age is used to evaluate the belt and surge bin capacities. Naturally, a considerable amount of spillage indicates the capacities are unacceptable. Acceptable capacities are generally indicated by minimal spillage. Numerous trial simulations are often necessary to find the acceptable capacities.

General widespread interest in fine coal cleaning circuits did not occur in the United States until the mid 1960's. Up until this period the relatively low price for which bituminous coal was sold did not justify for many operators the capital and maintenance costs associated with the beneficiation and drying of fine coal. However, with current growing interest in this area, the introduction of new types of process equipment along with modifications to existing components is occuring to maximize the recovery of coal fines. In 1973 Derrick Manufacturing Corporation introduced high frequency screening machinery into the coal industry. The first design consisted of a 4 ft. wide 18 ft. long single deck screen frame with three 100 mesh woven wire screen surfaces divided by repulping troughs for the addition of wash water. In addition, a special slotted rubber dewatering deck was installed on the discharge end of the unit to assure adequate dewatering of the screen oversize. This panel had nominal 25 mesh X 3.0" slotted openings. The machine was also equipped with a special high speed-low amplitude (3600 RPM .032" % AMP.) integral vibrator.

The Zoro pegmatite project in east-central Manitoba occurs 20 km east of the historic mining town of Snow Lake. A composite sample (Master Comp) was prepared fromthree pegmatite zones within Zoro Dyke “D1” including the North, Central, and South Zones for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample crushed to ca. P80 of 600 μm to determine the overall mineral assemblage, liberation of spodumene, and assess the potential recovery of spodumene by flotation. XRD and QEMSCAN results show that the sample consists of spodumene (10.5%), quartz (29.3%), plagioclase (29.0%), K-feldspars (21.3%), micas (5.1%), tourmaline (2.9%), and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1%). Spodumene is well liberated (88%), but also forms complex particles (7%), and middlings with quartz (4%). Liberation of spodumene increases from 81 in the + 600 μm to 95%in the − 106 μm size fraction. Liberation of quartz, feldspars, and micas account for 89%, 94%, and 83%, respectively. Electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS showed that the average Li concentration is 3.7% in spodumene, 2196 ppm in micas, 1001 ppm in tourmaline, and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Thus, spodumene accounts for 96%, micas 2%, Fe-Mn phosphates 1%, and both K-feldspars and tourmaline for < 1% of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other than spodumene carriers. Heavy liquid separation was conducted on the Master Comp which was crushed to − 6.4 mm, while the − 600 μmfractionwas removed fromthis test. The coarse fraction − 6.4mm/+ 600 μmwas subjected to HLS tests with eight heavy liquid-specific gravity cut-points (2.65 to 3.10 g/cm3). HLS indicates that it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate (close to 6% Li2O) after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.

The image-based On-line Particle Size Analyzer (OPSA) system has been developed at the University of Utah to measure particle size distributions under plant conditions where overlapped and segregated particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Evaluation of the OPSA system at several plant sites has been completed. The results show a consistent agreement between the particle size distributions obtained from the OPSA system and those obtained from laboratory screen analysis of belt samples. These results and the stable performance of the OPSA system during the field tests suggest that continuous quality control of crushed products is possible using the OPSA system.

It is estimated that through 1975, there were 1.69x109 m2 (418 000 acres) of urban land threatened by potential subsidence due to mining with a value of over $12 billion (19;3 dollars; USBM, 1979). With increased coal production to meet the energy needs of the nation, both these figures may be expected to increase. Hence greater attention to controlling surface damage due to subsidence is merited. In fact, the Surface `lining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) (Public Law 95-87) mandates that underground coal mining operators "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, ..." The term "subsidence," as used in this paper, implies the total phenomenon of surface effects associated with the mining of minerals, and not only vertical displacement of the surface as is sometimes inferred in the literature.

High-purity quartz (SiO2) is an important material widely used in many industries, including semiconductor technology, telecommunication, and optics. The content and distribution of impurities in quartz significantly affect the processing methods. This paper provides an insightful review on the processing of high-purity quartz, covering the analytical techniques, separation methods, and the critical procedures used to assess the quality of quartz ore. More importantly, the critical review of the thermal phase transition separation method for fine-grained mineral inclusions, micron-grade fluid inclusions, and lattice-bound trace elements is notably opened for the first time. It is proposed that the research field as a monopolized industry would benefit by expounding the critical problems that occur during the preparation of high-purity quartz.

The two main characters, a cop named Raylan and a criminal named Boyd, are adversarial to the very end, yet they manage to maintain a seemingly inexplicable bond of friendship through it all. The final episode ends (spoiler alert) with Boyd asking Raylan why that is. He responds, “If I allow myself to be sentimental, there is one thing I wander back to” Boyd responds, “We dug coal together.” Fade to black.What creates these types of bonds between friends and co-workers in mining? I don’t know about you, but many of my best friends I met in mining. Certainly the people I respect the most in this world are a part of our industry. Good, honest, honorable men and women. And I am not just talking about the leaders of our industry. I am talking about great miners who taught me how to do the right thing and also be productive.I have had the pleasure to work for some great people and the misfortune of working for some of the loudest screamers. What I consider the worst butt-chewing in my life may surprise you. I once worked for a man I respected, because he showed me respect. He went on a business trip and left some instructions. For some reason, I was able to justify to myself that they applied to everybody but me, and I disobeyed them. When he returned he called me into his office and said to me: “Tim, you pissed me off when you did that.” He said it quietly and with no anger. I had lost his respect. This devastated me more than any screaming shift boss ever could have. I learned a lot about values from that conversation.Most of us will spend more time at work than we will with our families over a lifetime. It is natural that tight bonds be created at work. What I believe makes mining special is that these bonds are so strong. They are strengthened by the incredibly hard work our miners do. They work at all hours, on holidays and in all sorts of extreme weather conditions. The physical demands of the job are sometimes exhausting. Our bonds are further reinforced because the work is dangerous. Not only does management watch out for the wellbeing of their people, but each and every one of us looks out for one another. The bonds are made tight because our people are so passionate about what they do, no matter the department or profession. Finally, they are strong because of the thousands in the industry that keep doing the right thing, every day. We make great friends in this industry because of the strength of character of our people. That is why Boyd and Raylan respected one another so much."

The expansion of the United States economy in the postwar period has had a tremendous impact on the demand for energy. Not only has total energy consumption increased at an unprecedented rate, but there have been major shifts in the composition or mix of energy resources within the end-use sectors. Because of the numerous interrelationships between substitutable energy resources and their markets, the energy economy can only be analyzed in terms of the trends of its component parts. This problem takes on additional complexity when attempting to chart the nation&apos;s future energy requirements. Total energy consumption can be forecast with reasonable accuracy for periods up to 15 years by relating this to projections of economic indicators. However, forecasting the component parts of the energy economy constitutes a dilemma in that the sum of the projected parts frequently exceeds predictions for total energy. Areas of uncertainty in energy forecasting tend to mount rapidly when proceeding from total energy to the consideration of specific energy resources consumed as fuel, power, or raw materials.

The commissioning of a Distributed Digital Control. System for the grinding circuit at Cuajone, was completed by mid August, 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console, improved mill throughput significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the mills and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses in detail the strategy development, the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system. 1.0 Introduction In November 1976, the Cuajone Concentrator, located on the western slope of the Andes in Southern Peru, was commissioned to treat a nominal 41,000 TPD of ore. A systematic elimination of production restrictions has resulted in a continual increase of concentrator throughput to 48,700 TPD before the grinding control was in- stalled.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.&apos;s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). This paper is intended to describe the utilization of Western subbituminous coal as used in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares this coal&apos;s characteristics with those of a typical Midwestern and Eastern coal as a base and reviews the various design considerations when blends of these coals are used. The effects of blending various low-sulfur Western coals with Midwestern or Eastern coals to achieve a predetermined sulfur dioxide emission and the resulting alteration in the coal characteristics as they apply to utilization are also reviewed. The blending of coals as one means of complying with sulfur dioxide regulations will take on increasing importance as the various deadlines for compliance with new and existing regulations approach. We must first consider the availability of these low-sulfur coals; and insofar as the Eastern low-sulfur coals have been mined for many years, we have focused our attention on the availability of the coal reserves west of the Mississippi River in the United States, as this is the area to which many people are turning in order to meet this requirement.

Environmental and economic costs related to equipment fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission present a substantial challenge to the mining industry. Haul trucks are an integral part of the overall surface mining system and they consume a significant quantity of fuel. Consequently, they produce a significant amount of CO2. The objective of this research is to (i) establish a mathematical relationship among a truck?s fuel consumption, power and engine load factors and (ii) determine the amount of a truck?s CO2 emission and the associated cost that may arise from potential CO2 legislation. In order to achieve these objectives, the authors have considered original equipment manufacturer (OEM) haul trucks, which are commonly used in surface mining operations. The research presented here may be used by mining professionals to help determine the cost and environmental burden of the trucks? application and efficiently manage energy consumption.

Ask someone what they can tell you about the Royal Canadian Mint and most likely the first thing that they will mention, is coinage. The Royal Canadian Mint manufactures Canada&apos;s one-cent coins, nickels, dimes and quarters - over 1 billion per year. Most of these coins use copper and nickel as base material, and all of this metal is mined, refined and processed in Canada prior to being shipped to the mint for coin production. In 1985 alone, 1270 metric tons of Canadian nickel and 2160 metric tons of Canadian copper were absorbed in circulating coinage. July 1987 will have marked the introduction of Canada&apos;s new one dollar coin, an important new addition to Canada&apos;s monetary system. The first phase of this program will consume about 2,235 metric tons of Canadian nickel in the initial production run. Annual requirements in subsequent years are estimated at 225 metric tons. The Royal Canadian Mint is also a major producer of circulating coinage for foreign countries. Since the state-of-the-art Winnipeg plant swung into full production in 1976 the Mint has struck more than 5.2 billion coins for some 35 nations around the world. 1985 sales have increased almost 6 fold over 1984. 1987 already shows commitments for a further significant increase in volume in this business. The use of Canadian metals in export to foreign nations as coinage adds still more to the Royal Canadian Mint&apos;s key role as a major market maker for Canada&apos;s mining industry. The success of the Mint in this realm can be directly traced to it&apos;s 75 years as one of the world&apos;s most important refiners of gold. The capabilities of the analog computer, the Mine Ventilation Simulator, installed at WHA&apos;s Safety and Health Technology Center in Denver, Colorado, are discussed. General opera- ting procedures are described showing how a mine model is produced, and how the model can subsequently be modified to produce a solution to a mine ventilation problem. A sample problem is included to illustrate the technique. The important role the Mine Ventilation Simulator plays in ventilation training is discussed, including experiences with the education of students at the Colorado School of Mines. This paper includes a summary of some of the advantages and disadvantages of the analog technique and suggests some design criteria for application to future development of analog computers, based on experience gained with the Mine Ventilation Simulator.

There are technical and commercial limitations on using high fluorine copper concentrates in industrial copper smelters. The presence of more than 1000 ppm of fluorine in copper concentrates affects the sulfuric acid units generally integrated to copper smelters, and penalties are normally applied to high fluorine concentrate prices. Several process alternatives to this issue were studied at CVRD Technology Center (SUTEC): modifications on conventional sulfuric acid plants to use high fluorine concentrates, removal of fluorine containing minerals in flotation using depressants, selective leaching of fluorine minerals and sulfuric leach of copper concentrates. Finally, a hydrometallurgical process of removing fluorine was developed by SUTEC.

This study attempts to compare the costs of transporting coarse coal by pipeline, versus the more conventional use of belt conveyors. Hydraulic conveying of crushed (not pulverized) coal has not had widespread commercial acceptance. However, there is little doubt that the technology is available, so that, should this method be proven economical for a given application, implementation of this technology will become more acceptable. Hydraulic transport by pipeline between the mine stockpile and the coal preparation plant, for distances normally considered practical for an overland belt conveyor, should be an ideal application. In this application there is no need for dewatering facilities at the receiving end of the pipeline, because, the receiving screens at the plant serve this purpose. Further, clarified water from the preparation plant can be recirculated back to the mine, a plus for water resource and environmental considerations.

Underground instrumentation and observations at longwall panels have demonstrated that the growth of main roof causes an extremely high roof weighting on the shields. It can sometimes result in catastrophic effects on the support when the roof weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on characteristics of main roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations, based on the monitored shield data, theoretical analysis, and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed in detail to define main roof failure modes and understand the maximum roof weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield initial setting condition and the final failure mode of the main roof.

C. Hertzler The difference of means of milling characteristics by rock and ore type is tested in a statistical manner in the paper. The null hypothesis being tested is that the sample means of two different populations are equal. It is assumed that the null hypothesis is true when performing the test. Because of this, acceptance of this hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are equal (or there is no significant difference between the sample means), not that the samples come from the same population, as the author asserts. Rejection of the null hypothesis leads to the conclusion that the sample means of the two different populations are not equal. A P value for this test is reported in Table 2 and is incorrectly identified as the probability that the two samples came from different populations. Actually, what was recorded was 100(1 - p) where p is the usual p-value. The usual p-value measures, on a scale of zero to one, the extent to which the data agree with the null hypothesis. It is the probability of observing a value of the test statistic (Z score) that is at least as contradictory to the null hypothesis as the one computed from the sample data (McClave and Dietrich II, 1982). The author makes no mention of the fact that were these tests to be conducted together, the chances of determining that the null hypothesis is not true when it is really true are increased considerably (Snedecor and Cochran, 1980). This is a multiple comparisons problem and should be dealt with accordingly. The usual methods involve adjusting the level of the individual tests. Table 2 reports an incorrect 100(1 - p) value in the comparison of concentrate grades for other rock types with .30 to .69 % Cu vs other rock types with .70 + % Cu; 86 % should be 98.6 %. Although the article can be criticized for poor data presentation and discussion of that data, the point the author makes regarding the use of these statistics in the ore reserve estimation process is well taken. It does not appear that inaccuracies in the statistical interpretations have hindered that usefulness. Miller After reading Ms. Hertzler&apos;s comments, it appears that the differences noted were basically semantics. If the paper is ever presented at a math symposium, some changes will be needed. When deciding the best way to present the data to mining engineers and geologists, I decided that presenting the probability that the two sample groupings came from different populations (reverse to the Null hypothesis) was easier and would require less verbage to explain. Hence, the 100(1 - p) difference which was noted. Ideally, I would have preferred to give the recovery and concentrate grades, then comment which ones had significant differences. Unfortunately, Kennecott Corp. did not grant permission to publish the ore body&apos;s actual recoveries and concentrate grades. The conclusion is that there was, as expected, a relationship between the ore&apos;s geologic properties and the metallurgical properties, and by determining this relationship, the overall mineral model was greatly improved.

This study probed the selective separation of lanthanum and yttrium in a nitrate medium in the presence of aluminum and calcium impurities using di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The factors studied in a central composite design (CCD) included extractant concentration, pH, concentration ratio of total impurities to rare earth elements, and interaction of these three factors. The extraction mechanism and types of extracted metal-containing species were delineated by the slope analysis method. The obtained thermodynamic data showed that lanthanum and yttrium extraction by the D2EHPA extractant was exothermic. The extraction of both rare earth elements was accompanied by an entropy reduction. The negative magnitude of ΔS in yttrium extraction reaction suggests stronger D2EHPA-Y(III) complexation relative to La(III). As entropy decreased and enthalpy increased, the extraction process became unspontaneous. Using the proposed flowsheet, lanthanum and yttrium products with > 90% purity were obtained.
