Concentrating Line 6 just went down again. The control room operator checks the graphic display. Only one piece of equipment shows an alarm. Clicking on the ball mill icon, he discovers the culprit was the low flow lube switch. The flow looks okay now, but it is the third time this week the switch has stopped the line. Maintenance is called, the switch replaced and the line is up running again. Sending the right person to the right spot immediately can save hundreds of hours of downtime every year. This paper discusses the principles behind implementing smart First-Out Fault Detection to dramatically reduce equipment downtime in new, or existing control system architectures. Methodologies are presented to maximize the system benefits, while minimizing development costs. Case histories are presented for a number of successful implementations in mineral processing plants.

The first version of the longwall strata control and maintenance system (LSCMS) has been successfully developed by the Strata Control Re¬search Team at the University of Alabama. The system includes a software package designed to monitor shield leg pressure, interpret the data and predict the forthcoming roof loads and the existence of geological anomalies. It can also detect maintenance problems of the face equipment. The LSCMS was installed underground and connected to the surface terminals at Drummond's Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The system has proven to be a useful and practical system for improving safety and efficiency in coal-mining operation. The Shoal Creek Mine is a new, large coal mine operated by Drummond with two longwall panels. The Blue Creek seam is the primary source of coal production. It is located at a depth of 275 to 440 m (900 to 1,450 ft) below the surface with an approximate 2% southwest dip. Typical strata conditions are represented by two stratigraphic columns (Figs. la and b). A fireclay/dark shale parting (called Middleman) 0.2- 0.7-m- (1- to 2.5-ft-) thick exists between the Mary Lee and Blue Creek seams. Mining conditions vary from area to area. This mainly depends on the Blue Creek seam thickness that ranges from 0.9 to 2.9 m (3 to 9.5 ft). The thickness of the Mary Lee and the parting is relatively consistent with a to¬tal of 0.9 m (3 ft). Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. The year was 1974. The event - the United States Congress was embroiled over what issues should be included in the proposed national surface mining law. The question - what should be done with underground mines? The leading bills ultimately addressed the environmental impacts associated with underground mines including provisions to protect the surface from subsidence impacts. Amid the fears that this subsidence language might discourage underground mining, sponsors of the bill were asked to explain the meaning of the provision that read "to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible." Was this an attempt to limit mining that caused planned and controlled subsidence? Former Deputy Director of the Office of Surface Mining, Dean Hunt, reviewed some of these historical events in a 1985 presentation before the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation. He reported that in 1974 Congressman Morris Udall took the floor to respond to these concerns expressed by other members of Congress and the industry. Mr. Hunt cited Congressman Udall's July 10, 1974 Congressional Record statement: "The House bill contemplates rules 'to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible.' The word prevent led to fears expressed by the Secretary of the Interior Morton, that the effect would be to outlaw longwall mining, with its obvious subsidence ... in fact the bill's sponsors consider longwall mining ecologically preferable and it and other methods of controlled subsidence are explicitly endorsed." Further, the report that accompanied the front-running bill, HR11500, provided the following clarification on the issue of subsidence prevention: "It is the intent of this section to provide the Secretary with the authority to require the design and conduct of underground mining methods to control subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible in order to protect the value and use of surface lands. Some of the measures available for subsidence control include: (1) leaving sufficient original mineral for support; (2) refraining from mining under certain areas---or (3) causing subsidence to occur at a predictable time and in a relatively uniform and predictable manner. This specifically allows for the uses of longwall and other mining techniques which completely remove the coal." It is clear from the preceding statements that Congress considered the removal of all the coal and causing subsidence in a predictable and uniform manner to be equal to or better than leaving support coal and causing no subsidence. While the actual provision in the bills talked of preventing subsidence, a subsequent exception made it clear that the real intent was to control it. This is evidenced in the specific planned subsidence language that appeared in the bills and ultimately in Section 516 (b) (1) of PL95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. It reads: "...adopt measures...to prevent subsidence ... except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." In spite of this historic record that supports controlled subsidence, something has been lost in the implementation. The primary focus by many regulators over the past few years has been on the "prevent" aspect irrespective of mining method being used. This has appeared to change the original intent of Congress from one of controlling subsidence to one of minimizing damage. The objective of this report is to review some of the current regulatory issues that impede full extraction mining and offer some suggestions on possible ways to deal with these issues.

The aim of this study is to synthesize hydrated compounds of calcium silicate (tobermorite) using as siliceous source perlite milling process wastes, containing more than 70% of SiO2. Calcium silicate hydrates are mainly used for construction of lightweight building materials, plasters, tiles and filters. The effect of temperature, time and particle size of perlite on the quality and composition of the solid product was studied. The solid products were characterized by X-ray Diffractometry, Differential Thermal Analysis and the amount of Acid Insoluble Residue. The synthesis of tobermorite was per-formed by the hydrothermal treatment of perlite waste with a saturated calcium hydroxide solution at a molar ratio CaO/SiO2 of 1, liquid to solid ratio 10 mL/g and 1% w.t. NaOH addition. Three experimental sets were performed. In the first series of experiments the synthesis temperature was kept constant at 205°C while the synthesis time varied from 0.5 h to 24 h. In the second experimental series the synthesis time was kept constant at 2 h while the temperature varied between 150°C and 245°C. In the third experimental set the temperature was 205°C and the reaction time was 2 hours and two perlite waste size fractions were used, a coarse (d50=18 µm) and a fine grained one (d50=8 µm). Reaction products consisted of semicrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (I) and crystalline Al-substituted tobermorite or a mixture of both. An isomorphic Si4+ ions substitution with Al3+ ions in the hydrated calcium silicate lattice was detected by thermal analysis. The experimental results show that good quality crystalline Al-tobermorite can be produced after 6 hours of autoclaving at 205°C or after 2 hours of hydro-thermal treatment at 225°C. Generally, the in-crease of synthesis temperature or time favors the crystallization of calcium silicate phases and enriches them in aluminum. The use of fine grain size perlite is more efficient for the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium silicate hydrates.

lmenite is a primary ore feed to the DuPont chloride process for the manufacture of titanium diox-ide pigment. We seek to determine ilmenite geochemistry as a function of original source and as-certain which ilmenites have chemistry most amenable to upgrading via iron-leaching (leucoxenization) and that have favorable, with respect to pigment manufacture, trace element content. Ilmenite geochemistry is a function of its primary origin and of subsequent alteration. Heavy mineral sand deposits may contain ilmenite from one or several dominant source rock(s). In addition, ilmenite may alter in the weathering environment, changing the major element compo-sition (iron-leaching) and certain of the minor element content. A primary objective is to classify ilmenites in relation to origin in order to fingerprint source rocks in provenance determination. The changes in trace element chemistry during alteration are also investigated. A “decision tree” is developed to classify ilmenite types and source rock origins. Ultimately, with those methods and by amassing a database of ilmenite types from worldwide locations, it should prove possible to determine ilmenites (and their sources) more susceptible to iron leaching in the weathering en-vironment. Such ilmenites, enhanced in their titanium content, are the preferred ore targets. The method used is electron microprobe analyses at elevated conditions of voltage, cur-rent, and counting time to enable higher precision. In-situ ilmenites from igneous, metamorphic, and altered rocks (saprolites) are analyzed. Initial foci for sedimentary ilmenites are restricted provenance (approaching monogenetic, examples from Spain, Portugal) and polygenetic prove-nance (Denmark). Altered ilmenites, including the DuPont Florida ore, are used to characterize the chemistry of leucoxenization. Trace element concentration, detectability, and cost considera-tion, led to focus on Mn, Mg, V, Cr, and Nb to develop a classification scheme validated by dis-criminant analysis and “classification-regression trees”. Results show a high degree of success for restricted provenance study and an acceptable one for polygenetic provenance.

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

Mine Terex articulated dump trucks are working on a large restoration project of an abandoned open cast coal site in Blacklaw, central Scotland. The project is part of the construction of a 42-turbine wind farm complex. During the scheduled 18-month duration of the project, three 28-t(31-st) Generation 7 TA30 dump trucks and the six 36.5-t (40-st) TA40articulated trucks are estimated to move about 1Mm3 (1.3 million cu yd)of material. The trucks are working12-hour shifts, 5.5days a week.

A new water treatment plant is to be constructed for a portion of the water supply system of New York City. The project includes construction of new water conveyance tunnels crossing perpendicular and sub-parallel to the existing pressurized water tunnel at two locations. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of new tunnel construction on stability of the existing tunnel and hydrojacking potential in the surrounding rock mass. This paper introduces a practical approach to evaluate tunnel interaction, expressed in terms of rock-liner interaction, stress-induced stability and hydrojacking failures. A simple method to evaluate hydraulic and mechanical properties of concrete liners and jointed rock mass is also presented.

Continuing analysis of environmental samples for asbestos content has resulted in the misidentification of non-asbestos amphibole particles as asbestos fibers. These errors have received wide publicity (such as in the asbestos-in-crayon story) and have caused unnecessary reformulation of products. The primary cause of these errors has been a poor understanding of mineralogy and analytical techniques among the many asbestos laboratories that arose following the passage of the AHERA regulations. Presented here is a procedure based on published data that can be used to correctly classify an elongated particle as asbestos or as non-asbestos.

"The ancestral Ringarooma River in northeast Tasmania has transported alluvial tin and other heavy minerals from their onshore source of stanniferous Devonian granites downstream into what is now Ringarooma Bay. Previous exploration work has demonstrated the presence of potentially economic tin mineralisation within the palaeochannels and terraces associated with the submerged river.The offshore tin resource lies directly on the seabed or with less than 2 m of overburden, and within 5 - 50 m water depths in the wider bay area. The main river channel continues offshore for at least 13 km, with high tin grades found within the palaeochannel but also dispersed across the sea floor as a sheet wash, a result of Quaternary sea level change reworking the placer deposits. This drowned portion of the coastal plain contains a continuation of rich tin leads as low gradient anastomosing channels, and has been delineated by marine seismic and drilling activity since the 1960s. Tin grades in the Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial profiles vary from 50 - 300 g/m3, with the highest concentrations in the coarser basal horizons. A previous offshore explorer estimated a resource of 194 Mm3 at 150 - 250 g/m3.Kenex Ltd created 3D models of the paleochannels and the mineralisation with the aim of better constraining the resource estimate and identifying additional depositional areas. The modelling was undertaken with the input of geophysical data, bathymetry and geochemical sampling of the seabed surface and from historic offshore drill holes. A prospectivity model covering Ringarooma Bay was produced to target tin-bearing gravels. Predictive maps were created to represent various features of the offshore mineral system, including assessing gradient changes in palaeochannels and their sinuosity. The model identifies areas with higher potential for alluvial tin mineralisation and will be used to focus the exploration programme over tenements currently held by Kenex Ltd."

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

Waste materials caused by mining activities are an important environmental problem. Paste technology is a good alternative for waste management because it has many benefits in the aspects of environment, cost and safety. Disposal of process wastes in paste form is an attractive option for waste management, as it eliminates or reduces the risks associated with conventional methods. Due to the geotechnical characteristics of the paste, it is very similar to soil materials. So determining the geotechnical properties of the paste material is essential to durability of the paste. The some important geotechnical properties are compressive strength, porosity, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, water content, consolidation, etc. In this study, the important parameters and the relation between them were investigated and obtained some results which will affect for optimum design of waste management.

Led by a surge in coal production and prices in recent years, Colorado’s mining industry is taking part in the same revival as others states and the world. Not too many years ago, the state’s industry was languishing in the same doldrums as the rest of the mining world. Ironic for a state whose history was based on mining. Now, however, Colorado’s mining can boast increased production in all commodities produced, along with prices that allowed companies to expand, increase work forces and post improved shareholder value. So there was a lot of optimism at the Colorado Mining Association’s (CMA) 107th National Western Mining Conference in February. The conference, held in Denver, attracted more than 500 attendees and 39 exhibitors. The theme was Colorado Mines the World.

Headrace Tunnels and parts of the Access Adit Tunnels of Kárahnjúkar Hydropower project, KAR-14, in Iceland will be excavated using three full-face Robbins Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). TBM sizes range from 7.23 to 7.63 meters in diameter and the total headrace tunnel length is approximately 40 km. The crushed rock is transported on conveyor belts to disposal areas near each Adit. The estimated average excavation rate is approximately 25 meters per day per machine. Electricity will begin to flow in April 2007, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2009. This paper is divided into four sections. In the PROJECT OVERVIEW section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drives is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes in the TBM OPERATION section with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

The numerous small high grade gold and silver deposits of the Front Range Mineral Belt have been uneconomical because of the high costs of mill construction, transportation, and smeltering. Processing of these ores must be simple, cheap, with satisfactory recoveries, and be environmentally acceptable. Vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery satisfies these parameters. A battery of testing was conducted utilizing bottle and bucket tests. A five ton vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery gave excellent results while a five ton heap leach proved impractical due to channeling.

"The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

The incorporation of low cost technology transfer to increase the ability of locals to acquire and maintain long term employment are key ingredients for sustainable industrial development. Alcoa’s Alumar plant on the island of Sao Luis is the largest and most modern refinery/smelter complexes in northern Brazil. The plant has one of the most advanced Environmental, Health, and Safety management process in the aluminum industry. Technical assistance, training and financial support were made available to Alumar to address social sustainability issues. Through several programs led by employees on a voluntary basis and applying intensive and extensive training programs, Alumar has enabled local people to develop skills on agriculture and land management, wastes minimization, small business development and administration, all based on sustainable development and social responsibility concepts.

"Co-rich ferromanganese crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) distributed on seamounts in the western Pacific are potential economic resources for cobalt, nickel, platinum, and other rare metals in the future. Evaluation and selection of a mining site can be established based on abundance and grade of Fe-Mn crusts in the site as well as topography that should be smooth enough for mining operations. Therefore, acquisition of shipboard echo-sounding and acoustic backscatter data are prerequisite to the selection of potential mine sites in addition to visual and sampling operations. Acoustic backscatter data can be used to locate crust-covered areas on a regional scale with the understanding of acoustic properties of crust through its correlation with visual and sampling data.During an expedition that took place from January to March 2014, KIOST collected geophysical and geologic data to assess the resource potential for Fe-Mn crusts on three seamounts (guyots) in the Western Pacific. In OSM11, one of the three surveyed seamounts, three camera tows were performed to observe the distribution of Fe-Mn crusts on the summit and slopes of the seamount. Although sediments of various thicknesses generally cover most of summit region of OSM11, several regions with high backscatter signals occur on the periphery of the summit. The occurrence of Fe-Mn crusts, observed during the camera tows, on those high backscattered regions suggests that the backscatter signals of shipboard multi-beam sonar can reflect changes in the geology of the seafloor from sediment layer to Fe-Mn crust deposits. The Fe-Mn crust deposited around the summit region is worthy of notice because of its topographic characteristics, including shallow depth, flat or gentle inclined surface, and smooth relief, which are more suitable for mining operation compared to the flanks of seamount."

Drill cores from uranium roll-front deposits, hosted in lower Cretaceous strata, were examined from the proposed Dewey Burdock in-situ uranium recovery site in the northern part of the Edgemont uranium district, South Dakota. Uraninite (UO2), coffinite U(SiO4)0.9(OH)0.4, and doloresite (H8V6O16) occur as pore-occluding cements within the Fall River Formation in the Dewey area. In contrast, within the Lakota Formation in the Burdock area, uranium (with very little vanadium) is absorbed onto woody fragments and amorphous carbonaceous material in pressure-solution seams. Both areas have typical uranium roll-front mineralogy with 0.5 wt. % pyrite in the reduced solid phase and no pyrite in the oxidized solid phase. The groundwater at the ore zone is not oxygenated, so the uranium is relatively insoluble. Uranium in solution in ground waters is <10µg/L at Dewey and <22 µg/L at Burdock. Micromineralogic and geochemical data are being used to understand water/rock interactions, uranium distribution and movement, and as input factors for predictive reactive transport models.
