Caving of the second lift of the E26 orebody at Northparkes Mines was monitored with a comprehensive package of instrumentation, including an ISS seismic monitoring system. Seismicity was collected by an array of 19 triaxial accelerometers and 9 uniaxial geophones, giving a high quality seismic data set. The seismic response to block caving at Northparkes has been divided into two papers. The first paper focuses on the seismicity during undercutting. The second paper deals primarily with the seismicity during cave propagation during initial cave production. In this paper, traditional seismic monitoring concepts are applied to seismicity during cave mining. More than 40 000 seismic events were recorded during cave undercutting between February and January 2004. Events up to local magnitude +1.3 were recorded near the mine during undercutting, with event rates of up to 500 per day. Analysis of frequency-magnitude distributions, S-wave to P-wave energy, and temporal variations in event magnitude all gave insight into the seismicity recorded. In addition, a new technique, called apparent stress time history, was shown to be sensitive to stress change from undercut blasting, and useful to identify significant periods during cave development. A significant difference was identified between the cave back location and the halo of seismic events above the cave. Throughout the undercutting, the a seismic zone of loosening was typically 50 to 70 metres in vertical thickness. Based on the seismicity, a stress driven rock mass failure model is proposed. Early in the undercutting, seismicity and movements in the seismogenic zone were directly triggered by stress change from undercutting. Towards the end of undercutting, seismicity was virtually uncorrelated with undercut blasting, and likely due to the onset of cave initiation.

The southern African coal industry is facing the reality that coal reserves are becoming deeper and harder to mine than before. Alternative visions need to be considered to offset the impact of these challenges on productivity, cost, and profitability. One of the main challenges is to maintain current production levels under more difficult conditions, and improve productivity where conditions allow. There is a need to move from the reactive event-based management system towards the more adaptable and flexible process-based management system. This paper focuses on underground coal mining, but the principles are also applicable to other commodities and mining methods. This paper is based on research undertaken by the personnel from Mining Consultancy Services Pty Ltd (MCS) on trends in the underground coal mining sector, as well as practical experience over a period of 16 years in the field of electronic monitoring of mining machinery and productivity optimization.

The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. Estimates for South Africa?s coal recoverable reserves made in 1999range from nine to 59 billion tons; latest estimates by the Minerals Bureau suggest that 33 billion tons is a more likely figure. As much as 70% of that coal is located in the Waterberg, Witbank, and Highveld coalfields, as well as lesser amounts in the Ermelo, Free State and Springbok Flats coalfields. However, the Witbank and Highveld coalfields are approaching exhaustion (estimated 9 billion tons of recoverable coal remaining in each), while the coal quality or mining conditions in the Waterberg, Free State and Springbok Flats coalfields are significant barriers to immediate, conventional exploitation. New extraction technologies, technologies exploiting the energy content of the coal in situ, as well as suitable uses and markets for low-grade, high-ash coal are required before the country can utilize its admittedly vast coal resources. Major challenges for exploiting some Limpopo province coalfields are severe water shortages, insufficiently developed infrastructure, fragile environments and poor roof conditions due to the depth and complex geology. In the Central Basin (Witbank, Highveld and Ermelo coalfields) technical innovations for thin seam extraction, economic mining of both pillar coal and intrusion-fragmented resource blocks and the utilization of lower-grade coals are required. The success of the fluidized bed combustion technology is necessary to utilize the low-grade coals of the Free State and Molteno coalfields, while environmental exemption for past problems, together with strategies for mining small, disjointed thin-seam resource blocks, is required in KwaZulu-Natal. Clean coal technologies, coal cost and quality, environmental considerations, sustainable development, the growth of the South African economy and Government?s regulation of the electricity industry are the main challenges to the continued use of coal as South Africa?s primary energy source.

Ground control problems in the form of large dome or wedge collapses have been experienced at Tau Lekoa Mine since production began. Crush pillars in various configurations have been used and through a process of trial and error the current pillar layout has been derived. A strike pillar layout is used and additional mid-panel pillars are left spaced a maximum of 10m or 16m apart, depending on conditions and mining direction. Pillar spacing is based on an empirical relationship between fallout height and pillar spans. Analysis of the spatial distribution of large falls of ground indicates that there may be several geotechnical relationships contributing to stable pillar spans. The current focus is to define the relationship between geotechnical areas and hangingwall stability so that area specific support strategies can be formulated that could result in increased production efficiencies. Des piliers d’écrasement, dans des configurations variées, ont été utilisés et une série d’essais a résulté en la disposition de piliers en cours. Une configuration de piliers de direction est utilisée, et des piliers mi-panneau supplémentaires sont laissés, espacés d’un maximum de 10m ou 16m, selon les conditions et la direction de la mine. L’espacement des piliers est établi sur une relation empirique entre la hauteur des retombées et les intervalles entre piliers. L’analyse de la distribution spatiale de grandes tombées de terrain indique qu’il peut y avoir plusieurs relations géotechniques qui contribuent à des intervalles de piliers stables. Die Analyse der räumlichen Verteilung großer Bodenabsenkungen deutet an, daß es einige geotechnische Verhältnisse geben kann, die zu stabilen Pfostenspannweiten beitragen. Der gegenwärtige Fokus soll das Verhältnis zwischen geotechnischen Bereichen und Stollendeckenstabilität definieren, damit bereichspezifische Unterstützungsstrategien formuliert werden können, welche in erhöhter Produktionsleistung resultieren könnten.

"Water is a very important component in the production process at underground coal mines. Current unfavourable economic conditions have forced the coal mining industry to identify and address every possible bottleneck preventing optimal production. An increase in water-related downtime was identified as one of the bottlenecks at Goedehoop Colliery’s Vlaklaagte Shaft. The purpose of this project was to identify the various causes that contributed to the high downtime (501 hours in 2013, which led to a potential profit loss of R12.9 million) and to suggest possible solutions.After a thorough investigation the main causes of water-related downtime were identified as low water pressure and low water flow caused by pipe leakages and bursts. The main root cause for the low water flow and pressure was identified as being the low pressure resistance (1600kPa) of the thin-walled galvanized steel pipes used in the underground inbye water reticulation system. The pipes were selected according to the previous 1000 kPa pressure requirement for the continuous miner. However, the pressure requirement changed to 1500 kPa, which resulted in the pipes being exposed to much higher pressures than designed for.The water reticulation system was reviewed and current and future underground pipe layout and water requirements were determined for the shaft. The time frame in which the water consumption would be the highest was determined to be between 1 January 2014 and 7 September2014. Machine and sprayer specifications were used to determine theater consumption at the shaft. Three different solutions were considered to solve the water-related downtime problem and to ensure the efficient supply of water to the newly open sections. Permanent underground concrete dams, semi-mobile dams, or new pipe columns with a higher pressure resistance of 3200 kPa were considered. A trade-off study (taking into consideration cost, time to completion and ease of implementation, maintenance requirements, safety, and flexibility) was completed to determine which of these solutions would be most viable.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Groundwater and associated pore pressure represent elements that can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Groundwater flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely, if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data were available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

The performance of microemulsified diesel and conventional diesel collectors in coal flotation was compared by flotation indicators, including combustible recovery, ash content of the clean coal, and the flotation index. An efficient separation with lower dosage was obtained using the microemulsified diesel collector. Under optimum separation conditions, the microemulsion consumption was 100 g/t less compared with diesel. The saving in diesel consumption using the microemulsion reached about 70%, disregarding the consumption of the surfactant and cosurfactant. Frothing tests showed that the frother dosage was decreased by using the microemulsion collector, because of the surfactant and cosurfactant added during preparation. The microemulsified diesel collector is superior to the conventional diesel collector in terms of diesel consumption and separation efficiency, but the selectivity requires further improvement. The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

The simple act of taking a sample implies that someone will use the information contained in the analytical result to make a decision about a course of action. In the mining industry, the decisions may involve huge capital commitments for opening or closing a mine, or marginal tactical costs that involve deciding if a truckload of mineralized rock should be sent to the mill for processing, or the waste dump. Sampling is among the most fundamental activities in a mining operation, and this paper aims to examine some of the technical issues that can assist in ensuring that samples are representative and correct. Insights into the scale of variability require that we disaggregate sampling variance into its component parts and evaluate each one individually. The work of Pierre Gy in understanding the different sampling errors is the first step in establishing an optimal protocol. This must be followed by the appropriate measures to ensure the protocol is implemented such that minimal bias is introduced in the sampling process. Even with these insights the possibility exists for large unseen and hidden costs can accumulate in a mineral development because of sampling errors. These hidden costs arise due to misunderstanding of the principle factors that affect the size of sampling errors, such as the mass of the sample, the effects of splitting a sample to reduce the mass, and the influence of the nominal particle size. The handling of sample material without due regard to the sampling characteristics of the material being sampled is also a major source of sampling errors. The most significant problem is due to the influence of the so-called volume-variance effect. This effect is a consequence of the support effect and the information effect both of which relate to the difference in size at which samples are collected and mining blocks are extracted. The information effect is a function of the availability of data at the time that decisions are made about the destinations of mineralized rock, namely the mill or the waste dump. Implementation of appropriate sampling protocols in the mineral value chain remains a challenge throughout the industry. The growing understanding and deepening appreciation of sampling theory and methods means we stand on the threshold of a new era for implementing and understanding appropriate sampling procedures and protocols. In the interests of optimal development of the national patrimony it is suggested that standardization through the identification of structural problems and continuous improvement of mining processes be instituted at a national level.

"SynopsisThe relationship between niobium content and austenite grain growth has been investigated through hot rolling simulation on a Bähr dilatometer. The effect of delay time between passes during rough rolling in Nbmicroalloyed steels with nitrogen contents typical for electric arc furnace (EAF) melting was studied. The results indicate that the grain growth constants n, Q, and A increase with an increase in Nb content. The activation energy for austenite grain growth Q was found to be in the range of 239 to 572 kJ/mol, the exponential constant n ranged from 2.8 to 6.2, and the material and processing condition constant A from 4.24 × 1012 to 4.96 × 1028, for steels with niobium contents ranging from 0.002% Nb to 0.1% Nb. A general constitutive equation for the prediction of austenite grain growth in these Nb-microalloyed steels under rough rolling conditions has been developed. Good agreement between the experimental and the predicted values was achieved with this constitutive equation.IntroductionGrain refinement has been found to increase both the strength and toughness of steels (Gao and Baker, 1998; Sharma, Lakshmanan, and Kirkaldy, 1984; Seok et al., 2014; Maalekian et al., 2012). It is also known that the austenite grain size directly influences the microstructure, and thus the mechanical properties, of the steel (Maalekian et al., 2012; Yue et al., 2010). Effective grain growth control is reported to be achieved through addition of precipitate-forming elements, such as Nb that, slow down the grain boundary migration through pinning and solute drag mechanisms (Yu et al., 2010; Olasolo et al., 2011; Alogab et al., 2007). Much work has been carried out on austenite grain lsize control by the addition of precipitate-forming elements that have a strong affinity for interstitial elements, such as carbon and nitrogen, which form the dispersed pinning particles to inhibit the austenite grain growth (Alogab et al. 2007; Hodgson and Gibbs, 1992; Nanba et al., 2003; Flores and Martinez, 1997; Rollett, Srolovitz and Anderson, 1989). Austenite grain growth can be described using a conventional or a modelling approach. With conventional approaches (e.g. metallography), in-situ monitoring of austenite grain growth at high temperatures is impossible. Modelling the grain growth behaviour based on available data is the ideal option. To quantitatively describe austenite grain growth therefore requires development of a sound mathematical austenite grain growth equation that accounts for the effects of the varying microalloying elements in inhibiting austenite grain growth. Numerous attempts have been made to develop an empirical model based on the general equation developed by Sellars and Whiteman (1979). Many of these models do not account for the direct effects of the microalloying elements such as Nb in austenite grain growth control [Fu et al., 2011; Wang and Wang, 2008; Wang et al., 2006; Shanmugama et al., 2005; Banerjee et al., 2010; Pous-Romeroa et al., 2013). The current work has considered this limitation, taking into account the direct effect of niobium in grain growth control during thermal processing. This is done by incorporating the initial austenite grain size Do and the microalloying element niobium in the development of a constitutive equation for grain growth prediction in Nb-containing microalloyed steels."

A typical sub-level block cave mining extraction method employs an undercut level to establish a cavity in hard rock, and as such requires special support methods and products to be installed during the development phase. The undercut level development in the block cave orebody is then sacrificial, and support elements will eventually report to the crusher and perhaps conveyor belt systems for transportation to surface. The choice of support products installed in the undercut level development should take cognizance of the detrimental effect these could have on the mining system such as cutting of conveyor belts, obstructing crushers, safety aspects, and productivity. This work explores the probability and practicality of making use of new-generation support products to make the operation safer as well as enhance productivity in the development phase and during the undercut operation. This paper will investigate the use of glass reinforced plastic(GRP) rockbolts and GRP mesh instead of conventional steel bolts and mesh along with resin capsule-filled holes with the GRP bolts. Complementing this with thin spray liner (TSL) application as another means of creating a safer operating environment, as well as a productive support medium, will also be addressed. These proposed items are envisaged to reduce production downtime and improve the safety of our people. These items are all easy and light to handle, cuttable and crusher friendly, as they will break up during the crushing process.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide The raw material for sulphuric acid manufacture is clean SO2 gas. It comes from (i) burning molten by-product sulphur; (ii) roasting or smelting metal sulphide concentrates, and (iii) decomposing contaminated organic chemical process sulphuric acid catalyst. Efficient gas cleaning is required for metallurgical and contaminated acid decomposition gases, especially the former. Sulphuric acid is made from SO2 gas by (i) oxidizing the SO2(g) to SO3(g) in contact with supported liquid-phase catalyst then (ii) reacting the resulting SO3(g) with the water component of 98.5 mass% H2SO4, 1.5 mass% H2O acid. This paper discusses the reasons for these process steps and indicates how acidmaking can be controlled and optimized. Special emphasis is placed on SO2(g) oxidation efficiency and how it is influenced by feed gas composition, feed gas temperature, catalyst composition, catalyst bed pressure, number of catalyst beds, and double versus single contact acidmaking. In addition, a review of various other treatment methods for SO2-bearing gases is provided. A brief description of each process is included along with commentary on their technical and economic applicability for use at metallurgical facilities.

The increased tendency to use hydrometallurgy as an extraction step towards final refining following a pyrometallurgical smelting process requires melts which have to be cast and or comminuted which can then be taken up into solution or leached. To generate surface area for optimal leaching, a common process is to granulate and in many cases mill, which is a general practice with friable material with properties associated with higher sulphur, carbon and silicon levels. However, in the case of metallic melts milling can be unfeasible due to the ductility of the granulated particles. Water solidification is capable of producing either fine particles by means of granulation or atomisation. Atomisation however, can produce particles as fine as 40 microns without a milling circuit.

Titanium sponge, which is almost pure titanium, is extremely ductile and not easily processed into titanium powder. One method of producing powder is the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process, where titanium sponge is hydrided to form brittle titanium hydride (TiH2). Titanium hydride is easily milled to produce powder and is then dehydrided to form Ti powder. In this work, titanium hydride powder obtained from titanium sponge was used as a starting material for blending and mechanical alloying with elemental powders. Firstly, titanium hydride powder was blended with aluminium elemental powder to produce a homogenized powder, which was then compacted and sintered to produce powder metallurgy compacts. Secondly, titanium hydride powder was mechanically alloyed with aluminium elemental powder and then compacted. The mechanically alloyed powder was characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology and microstructure. In both blending and mechanical alloying, the green compacts were characterized by assessing the green density, while the sintered compacts were characterized by their sintered density, microstructure, and hardness. The two processes have resulted in the formation of TiA13 intermetallic compound. It was established that by simple mixing and homogenizing, titanium hydride can be used as a starting material to produce powder metallurgy components in which porosity is a benefit rather than a problem, much akin to metallic foams. From the products obtained in the TiHz-Al system, it appears that titanium hydride can be used as a precursor in mechanical alloying. However, the possible formation of complex hydrides may introduce detrimental properties, and needs to be further investigated. For the production of non-porous components, it would be advisable to dehydrogenate the TiH2 powder before milling i.e. producing titanium powder by the hydride-dehydride (HDH) method. Wireless sensor networks and wireless communication systems have become indispensable in underground mines. Wireless sensor networks are being used for better real-time data acquisition from ground monitoring devices, gas sensors, and mining equipment, whereas wireless communication systems are needed for locating and communicating with workers. Conventional methods like wireline communication have proved to be ineffective in the event of mine hazards such as roof falls, fires etc. Before implementation of any wireless system, the variable path loss indices for different workplaces should be determined. This helps in better signal reception and sensor node localization, and also improves the method by which miners carrying the wireless devices are tracked. This paper proposes a novel method for determining the parameters of a suitable radio propagation model, which is illustrated with the results of a practical experiment carried out in an underground coal mine in southern India. The path loss indices, along with other essential parameters for accurate localization, have been determined using the XBee modules and ZigBee protocol at 2.4 GHz frequency.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mining) degree As a partial fulfilment for the degree of B.Sc. (Eng) (mining) at the University of the Witwatersrand, a dissertation was to be completed in the mining industry. This was done at Finsch mine, with the purpose of determining the best solution to the required secondary breaking problem. In order to complete the study of the secondary blasting method available for use in the new block 4, cave mining method at Finsch mine the following problem statement was identified and solved ?The methods currently in use, for the secondary breaking of oversize rocks at their source in the current production levels, are to be investigated, and their applicability to the new block 4mining project determined?. To effectively achieve this problem statement above; time was spent researching and investigating, in depth, the methods that are currently in use at both Finsch and Koffiefontein mines; so as to gain practical knowledge of these. The methods were identified and independently evaluated, taking into consideration factors such as costs of the equipment, time to break oversize rocks, advantages, disadvantages, safety and labour requirements, etc. This in turn then allowed for a direct comparison between the methods and the decision as to the best to apply to the new block 4 production level. The methods that were investigated included: ?Concussion blasting, where concussion bombs and lay-on charges are used to break hang-ups and boulders. ?Drill and blast methods, where holes are drilled in large rocks and charged manually with explosives. ?Emulsion secondary blasting, which is a new project in use at Koffiefontein mine from African Explosives Limited. ?The Ro-BustTM breaking system, a hydro-fracturing breaking system. Once all the methods had been evaluated and compared it was found that the Ro-BustTM Breaking system was the most applicable for the breaking of boulders, with, the Emulsion Blasting System being used for hang-ups. Nanofiltration (NF) has attracted much attention over the past few years due to the reduced energy consumption compared to reverse osmosis (RO) and better separation performance compared to ultrafiltration (UF). Although research has been done in the area of NF of nickel ions, sodium ions, and acid separation, not much attention has been given to the separation of high nickel concen¬trations from sulphuric acid streams. The use of NF for the separation of nickel and acid from a spent nickel electrolyte is an innovative process alternative for future industrial application within a base metal refinery. In this study, the separation performance of a composite polyamide NF membrane on a spent nickel electrolyte was investigated by varying the sodium sulphate concentration in the feed (50-150 g/l), the trans-membrane pressure (35-55 bar), and cross-flow velocity (1.5-3.5 m/s), and measuring quantities such as total permeate flux, acid rejection, nickel rejection, and sodium rejection. The nickel and acid concentration in the feed were kept constant with variations between 40-60 g/l and 25-40 g/l respectively, while the temperature of the experiments was kept constant at 50°C. The membrane was found to be very selective for nickel ions, with the rejection of nickel ions varying between 54.4% and 98.2%. The rejection of acid ions varied between -5.9% and 21.8%. The rejection of sodium ions varied between 16.6% and 72.4% at a cross-flow velocity of 2.5 m/s and sodium sulphate concentration of 50 g/l in the feed solution. An increase in trans-membrane pressure increased the rejection of nickel, sodium, and acid ions, while an increase in sodium sulphate concentration decreased the rejection of nickel and acid ions. The total permeate flux was found to increase with an increase in trans-membrane pressure and decrease with an increase in sodium sulphate concentration. The cross-flow velocity had an insignificant effect on the total permeate flux and the rejection of nickel, sodium and acid ions.

Transient states of the air parameters in mine workings occur as the effects of natural and technological disturbances, and in particular as a result of changes in ventilation conditions, caused by alteration of the mine workings geometry, state of fans performance or emission of gases. Particularly significant are those transient states caused by disturbances resulted from catastrophes, since they are frequently associated with violent phenomena that may be a danger for life and health of the staff working underground. The paper presents a number of examples of transient states of the air parameters in mine workings after a catastrophe, like the bump in the ZABRZE-BIELSZOWICE coal mine. Registration of air disturbances by the monitoring systems of ventilation in mine workings in the area of disaster both at the moment of a catastrophe occurrence and later during the rescue operation, enabled to track out the incident and identify the circumstances and reasons of those tragic events which caused death of 18 miners during last two years. Furthermore, computer simulations of processes occurring in mine ventilation network make effective research tools to be applied in practice, among others for the study of accidents and disasters.
