During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Underground observations in a coal mine have indicated failure oft he immediate roof above the bords. Careful observations and photographic recording of occurrences of these roof failures, termed ?roof guttering?, have been made. The occurrence of guttering results directly in roof instability, and indirectly, due to the interaction of the guttering with natural planes of weaknesses in the immediate roof rock. In this paper, relevant observations of roof guttering, possible mechanisms of formation of roof gutters, laboratory testing for determination of material strength and deformation properties, and numerical analyses to explain underground observations are described. Mapping of roof failures showed that these took place mainly towards the centre of the roadways. Roof guttering was observed often to occur violently and with little warning. Occurrence of roof guttering has a negative impact on production?some panels are abandoned, production times are increased and safety of workers is compromised. The numerical stress analyses showed that, although none of the constitutive behaviour criteria used predicted the observed underground failures correctly, the extension strain criterion gave the best agreement.

Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. I am sure that the post-conference tours will be interesting and of great benefit to participants. Finally, a big word of thanks to the members of the Organising Committee, the management and staff of the SAIMM, and to our willing sponsors, without all of whom this conference would not have been possible.

"In the case of feasibility assessments or feasibility studies, an important point of discussion is often how to calculate the capital (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) of a plant. Generally, there is also the request to know how the CAPEX varies when the size of the plant is increased. Nowadays, many databases give an indication of specific equipment costs in relation to the production rate. These data are based on cost information from equipment suppliers and have to be continuously updated by the owner of the database. The approach presented here is a model which allows sizing of process equipment, for example a leach tank, based on process data in combination with the calculation of mechanical properties. Furthermore, it calculates the CAPEX based on construction material cost and adequate machining surcharges. Thus, a single cost model for a leach tank is adequate for both copper and other hydrometallurgical plants and stays valid with changing construction material prices. To summarize, the advantage of this model is the more versatile approach and thus the flexibility due to the inclusion of design aspects, process and mechanical engineering aspects and an updatable database. The database, which is in regard to material cost and is the basis for the cost estimation, is easily updatable from commonly accessible data. This model thus approaches the procedures of an engineering company when designing a plant and executing a cost calculation. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgy nowadays plays an important role in processing of primary and secondary resources. In copper metallurgy, hydrometallurgy accounts for roughly 20 % of worldwide primary production, especially in the case of oxide or low copper-containing ores. Zinc smelters changed their method of production from a pyrometallurgical-dominated concept decades ago to mainly hydrometallurgical routes today. Gold production processes using leaching, especially, have a long history without any development which would not be competitive if not based on hydrometallurgical concepts (Pawlek, 1983; Winnacker-Küchler, 2006)."

Process and steel chemistry differences in hot rolled Al-killed low carbon strip steel between the hot charge route (HCR) as practised in a compact strip production (CSP) plant and the conventional cold charge route (CCR) have been studied. This was done with reference to differences in reheating practice, hot rolling practice and steel chemistry through emphasis on the effects of solubility and reprecipitation of AlN in the two process/product combinations and its effect on ferrite grain size development. An earlier modelling study on the evolution of the austenite grain size in both of the above hot rolling processes has also now been extended to include an estimate of the possible effects of retained strain after the last finishing pass on the ferrite grain size. As part of this study the equilibrium solubility trends of AlN in a number of boron-free low carbon Al-killed strip steels with low and high sulphur content from the two respective processes was investigated by the thermoelectric power (TEP) technique and differences in the effects through the derived solubility equation of Log[Al][N]=2.6?9710/T at typical slab reheating temperatures was demonstrated. Ferrite grain size modelling using the significantly lower Ar3 transformation temperatures generally found in hot rolled low carbon strip steel produced in the CSP plant using the HCR compared well to the larger grain size produced in the conventional CCR strip rolling plant. The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental Sampling Error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centered on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a), of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) method and the heterogeneity test (HT) method purport to provide such a constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponengand Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, while the third is an Archaean-type, shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appears to be too small and does not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis, are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. Strict implementation of International Standards for representative sampling of coal is difficult for routine monitoring, due to time, technical, and economic constraints. A large percentage of the total sampling variance arises from errors accumulated during the earliest stages of sample collection. Modified procedures on the precision of the final result leads to controversies between the sellers and customers for coal. Manual collection of coal samples violates the principle of correct sampling, that all fragments must have an equiprobable chance of being in the sample. In addition, manual size reduction of large numbers of samples is time consuming and involves human errors. A coal quality management procedure in alignment with the relevant ISO standards that describes the sampling protocol has been implemented, and current sampling and laboratory analysis of coal from base load mines (mines situated at the mouth of the power station) are well established. For import coal, sampling is performed during unloading by auto-mechanical sampling (AMS). Due to logistical and safety issues associated with multiple suppliers, Eskom opted for the coal to be sampled at source on a pre-certification basis. Online analysers provide a fast, accurate, real-time method of determining the total moisture and elemental composition of coal and is important to the coal industry for pricing, quality control, and reduction of SO2 emissions. Elemental analyses include S, Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ti, K and Cl. Measurement of S is dictated by the control of SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. Elements such as Na and Cl have adverse effects on boilers, causing fouling and slagging. Available online elemental analyser technologies include prompt gamma neutron activation analyses (PGNAA), recommended for major element determination, and pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis(PFTNA), that is capable of measuring the major and minor chemical elements contained in coal. These systems utilize nuclear reactions to produce characteristic gamma rays that are used for identifying various chemical elements. By acquiring the gamma rays in three different time windows, there is a significant reduction of the background as compared with the spectra taken with a radio isotopic source.

The electrical control of three-electrode submerged-arc furnaces suffers from a number of complexities, mostly due to the nature of the furnace electrical circuit providing power to the furnace where the three electrodes are interconnected within the furnace through the molten metal bath. This gives rise to what is known as the interaction effect 2, where variations in one electrode?s current can cause comparable changes to the currents in the other electrodes, particularly in larger furnaces with low power factor. Resistance-based control of the electrode penetration has largely alleviated these problems, since the resistance encountered by each electrode is predominantly dictated by the length and conductivity of the current path from the electrode?s tip to the molten metal bath, which acts as the three-phase circuit?s floating neutral point. Hence resistance changes due to tip position or conductivity changes beneath one electrode do not affect the resistances beneath the others, effectively decoupling the control of the individual electrodes1. Although resistance-based control is therefore generally accepted as superior to current-based control for the regulation of submerged-arc furnace electrode penetration, a few furnace operators still prefer to use current control under specific furnace conditions. This paper presents the results of analysing the performance of both current and resistance-based control in typical scenarios encountered on industrial furnaces, taking into account a number of factors including electrode penetration, power distribution, efficiency and asymmetry of the electrode currents. In order to accomplish this, three typically encountered scenarios were simulated. The results obtained show that resistance control provides more benefit in all cases, however, the uneven electrode current distribution generated by resistance control when electrodes are on top stops may cause some concern if baking of the electrodes is required in this scenario.

Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.

This paper describes briefly a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25000 to 70000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

The BIOX® process was developed for the biological pre-treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates ahead of conventional cyanide leach gold recovery. Rights to the process are currently with BIOMIN Technologies SA, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited. There are currently eight operating installations worldwide employing the process on a commercial scale. EKATO is a company specializing in developing new or optimizing existing mixing applications. EKATO has acquired a vast amount of expertise in agitation over its 75 year history. In a joint research project the reactors of the BIOX® process were characterized from the aspect of their mixing performance. BIOMIN is constantly testing new mixing solutions and reviewing potential vendors to increase the efficiency of the BIOX® process. EKATO?s intention was to qualify as an approved vendor for supplying agitation equipment to the BIOX® process. A two step approach was planned: In phase one of the project EKATO would develop an alternative agitation solution to the established option, exhibiting at least similar performance levels. In phase two potential possibilities to improve the overall design would be developed. This paper focuses on phase one and addresses the systematic approach applied by EKATO in characterizing the mixing processes. Mixing tasks were assessed individually applying basic theory and scale-up and -down rules to the individual tasks. Testing with model systems was done at the EKATO technology center in Schopfheim, Germany, on scales of 50 liters and 1 m³. The results showed that the ISOJET-B impeller design showed promising performance under BIOX® reactor conditions. Scale-up with the ISOJET-B was done in order to apply it in the 21 m³ live volume test reactor at Fairview mine in South Africa. At Fairview tests were performed using model systems and eventually under real plant conditions with BIOX® slurries. The results were a success and confirmed that the scale-up factors determined during the testing at EKATO?s technology center could be substantiated in the ?model scale? 25 m³ reactor. Testing under the actual process conditions showed that all design parameters were within the desired range to be considered an excellent leaching performance. This successful joint development shows the importance of a close cooperation of technology licensors or end-users and equipment suppliers. It is vital for understanding all factors influencing the mixing performance of processes. Exercises such as this will provide equipment suppliers and plant operators more confidence in managing further scale ups at ever larger engineered plants.

The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

Slake durability of rocks is an important property of rock-mass and rock-materials in geotechnical practice. The slake durability of rocks is closely related to their mechanical properties. In this paper, mechanical properties and slake durability tests for weak and clay-bearing rocks from Beypazari Trona Bed in Ankara, were performed in order to assess the slake durability and mechanical properties (especially rock strength) of these rocks as well as to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and slake durability. In performing this relationship, statistical based correlation has been applied.

We report on further progress in improving seismic locations by using the so-called double-difference method (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 and Waldhauser et al., 1999). Double-differences are obtained either using picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. The double-difference method provides for much improved relative locations by reducing the effect of the errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each geophone. Further improvements are obtained by using known locations, such as blasts. One of the difficult problems that we have overcome is that of finding the best “weights” for the time corrections. Experience obtained in relative moment tensor inversions by Andersen (2001) suggests that use of median corrections is both more stable and more accurate, even while the locations of the individual events is based on weighted least-squares minimization. A hybrid location program with known reference events has been developed. Tests on a synthetic data set gave relative locations that were much less widely spread than the absolute locations. The use of known event coordinates (blasts) moved the relative locations back towards the real locations. These results are confirmed in preliminary analysis of data from a mine. The absolute locations are adjusted using blast events restricted to the line of tunnel development. Inter-event distances are distributed in a power-law fashion that suggests that the relative location accuracies are improved by a factor of three or more. Nous rendons compte des progrès faits dans l’amélioration des locations de séismes en utilisant la méthode appelée de double- différence (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 et Waldhauser et al., 1999). On obtient les double-différences soit en utilisant des temps d’arrivée choisis soit des mesures variées de différences de temps obtenues de doublets de forme d’onde. La méthode de double-différence fournit des locations relatives très améliorées en réduisant l’effet des erreurs dans la vitesse d’onde des trajectoires de rayon entre chaque évènement et chaque géophone. D’autres améliorations sont obtenues en utilisant des locations connues, telles que les coups de mine. Un des problèmes difficiles que nous avons surmontés est celui de trouver les meilleurs coefficients de pondération pour les corrections de temps. L’expérience obtenue dans des inversions de phases tensorielles relatives par Andersen (2001) suggère que l’utilisation de corrections médianes est à la fois plus stable et plus exacte, même lorsque la location des évènements individuels est basée sur minimisation pondérée de moindres carrés. Nous avons développé un programme hybride de location avec des évènements connus pour référence. Des tests sur des données artificielles ont donné des locations relatives qui étaient beaucoup moins étendues que les locations absolues. L’utilisation de coordonnées d’évènements connus (coups de mine) a ramené les locations relatives vers les locations réelles. L’analyse préliminaire des données d’une mine a confirmé ces résultats. Les locations absolues sont ajustées en utilisant des évènements de coup de mine restreints à la ligne du développement du tunnel. Les distances entre chaque évènement sont distribuées comme par loi exponentielle ce qui suggère que les degrés d’exactitude des locations relatives sont améliorés par un facteur de trois ou plus. Wir berichten über einen weiteren Fortschritt, die seismische Positionen unter Verwendung der zu sogenannten Doppel-Unterschied-Methode (Spottiswoode und Milev, 1998 und Waldhauser et al.,1999) zu verbessern. Die Erfahrung, die in den relativen Momentspannerumkehrungen von Andersen (2001) gewonnen werden bietet den Schluß an, daß der Gebrauch von mittleren Korrekturen beständiger und genauer ist, sogar wenn die Positionen der einzelnen Fälle auf der bewerteten Reduzierung der Methode der kleinsten Quadrate basiert. INTRODUCTION Some years ago the authors proposed a modified procedure1 for carrying out micum index determinations2. The modifications consisted of using a drum of 50 cm internal length, i.e. half the length of the standard micum drum (a modification also adopted by the B.S.J.3), and the use of a + 25 mm coke instead of + 60 mm coke for the test. The proposed modified test and formulae for converting results obtained from it to standard micum test results and vice versa were based on the results obtained during the investigation of about 200 test cokes made in ovens of the South African Steel Industrial Corporation Limited (Iscor), the Fuel Research Institute co-operating with the experiments. Extensive testing of cokes has since been done at the Fuel Research Institute using both the standard and the modified procedures. The numerous test results obtained during this trial period fully support and strengthen the confidence originally expressed by the authors in the modified testing procedure. The scope of the modified micum index determination has in the meantime been extended by applying the testing procedure also to test cokes made in the Institute's experimental coke ovens, and also in this case the modified procedure has proved its usefulness. A difficulty is that when comparing the characteristics of cokes made in the Institute's two experimental coke ovens with each other and with those of cokes made from similar blends in commercial coke ovens, for example those of Iscor, the index values obtained invariably do not check exactly due mainly to inherent differences between the different types of oven4. For instance, resistance to abrasion of a coke made in Iscor's ovens is always appreciably higher than that of a coke made from the same blend (and having a similar moisture content) in the experimental ovens. This makes direct comparisons and the prediction of quality to be expected from commercial products, based on experimental coke oven results, difficult. It may also be added that workers in Great Britain some years ago reported a similar experience5. In the authors' opinion the main reason for the discrepancy is the relatively low height of the experimental ovens resulting in a much lower static pressure on the charge during coking than that obtaining in a commercial oven. The difficulty was pointed out and briefly discussed in a publication4 which appeared at a time when the micum test for coke evaluation had only just been introduced at the Institute, so that only B.S. shatter and abrasion test results were available for discussion in the publication. Needless to say, the introduction of the micum test by no means solved nor even alleviated the problem. On numerous occasions during the past few years the Institute has had to conduct contract investigations in its experimental coke ovens on behalf of companies which invariably desired an indication of the quality of coke likely to be obtained from certain coals or blends when coked commercially, more particularly in Iscor's type of coke ovens. It was, therefore, essential to accumulate statistical data which would enabe the prediction to be readily made. Fortunately the compilation of comparative coke-quality index values for the three types of oven under consideration has become possible as a result of coking investigations conducted in co-operation with Iscor over a number of years. During this period Iscor, on numerous occasions, kindly made available to the Institute portions of coals and blends coked in the Corporation's coke ovens, thus enabling parallel coking tests to be carried out in the Institute's experimental ovens. In this way enough statistical data became available to establish relationships between coking results obtained in Iscor's ovens and results obtained on similar coal charges in the Institute's ovens. The most practical and acceptable method of overcoming the problems of finding a suitable and simple basis enabling direct comparison between the cokes of the different origins mentioned to be made, is the assignment of descriptive arbitrary quality ratings, as indicated below, to the cokes obtained, it being argued that the quality rating assigned to coke made from a given coal or blend in the different coke ovens under standardized conditions should be the same, irrespective of differences in the index values obtained when subjecting the cokes to the usual coke evaluation tests. The system, which should enable the sponsors of coking investigations in the Institute's experimental ovens to make their own interpretations of the results obtained, is explained below. ARBITRARY QUALITY CLASSIFICATION OF COKES The Ml0m index1 (percentage material smaller than 10 mm after the test) of a blast furnace coke is a measure of its tendency towards breeze formation during handling -a low value indicating a low tendency. This is generally of greater importance under ruling South African conditions, than the M'40 index1 (percentage material larger than 40 mm after the test), which can be regarded as a measure of resistance to shatter. Introduction The introduction of teleremote systems to underground mining can provide a significant improvement in the performance of a mine when compared with conventional mining techniques. This paper presents the concepts of teleremote mining in a case study showing how the systems work and the competitive advantage autonomation of mining techniques will provide for underground metal mining operations into the future. This paper is divided into two sections: the Mining Automation Program and What is next? On January 1st 1996 Inco Limited, Tamrock Oy, DYNO Explosives Group and CANMET formed a consortium for the development of teleremote mining equipment called the ‘Mining Automation Program’ or MAP. This program included a five-year research and development agreement that combines the talents of the above organizations to create mining equipment and systems for autonomating mining. The projects are based on the communication system currently sold and marketed by Automated Mining Systems Limited. The main components of the program investigated the development of a positioning and navigation module, autonomated systems using teleremote techniques for development and stoping, and software systems to support the use of this equipment. The program included the establishment of a test mine, at Inco’s 175 Orebody near Copper Cliff North Mine. This facility was unique allowing collaboration of companies and research organizations inthe design and testing of techniques and equipment used to apply autonomation to mining. Since the inception of the project other research alliances have been added to enhance the program. These include the application of ground support (Meyco/ Master Builders), muck pile recognition, the broadening of telecommunications links (PRECARN Associates Inc.-MALTA project) and the collection and processing of drilling core through the automated diamond drilling project (J.K.S. Boyles). MAP began as an idea a number of years ago with the fundamental question ‘Can an ore-body be profitably mined through autonomation?’ The concept was to design mining equipment and systems that would allow the teleremote operation of a mine. Automation was only one componentof this much larger teleremote mining issue. To start with, it was essential to prove or disprove the feasibility of this concept. The fundamental requirements are: • Telecommunications • Positioning • Navigation • Equipment • Software • Electronics • Mining Engineering • Organization. Each of these had to be considered. Technically, the feasibility of the project hinged on the successful development of a high capacity communication network, an accurate underground positioning system, a navigation system and finally the electronics and software that could integrate these. Mining equipment that could perform all the mining functions was the next requirement, along with explosive supplies that could be delivered to the holes teleremotely. Whatever the systems developed, they must be able to work in both bulk and selective mining situations and in varying conditions within a mine. Finally, the organizational issues of a change from our current method of operation to teleremote mining had to be understood. After five years of research and development the answer to the question ‘Can an orebody be profitably mined using autonomation techniques?’ is YES! There are still hurdles to overcome, however, the basic premise has been proven. The development and production of underground tunnels and stopes has been done. There have been interesting outcomes in terms of reduced effort to accomplish mining and the total time to mine. Definitions •Automationis the process by which a machine or system is run continuously including the ability for the system to self-correct. •Autonomationis the same as automation except that the process does not self-correct. •Teleremote operation is the operation of mining equipment over a network from any location out of line-of-sight of the machine. •Equipment Automationis the addition of technology to a machine that allows for unmanned operation of a machine and thus enhances the productivity of the operator. For example, a guidance system that allows a load-haul-dump to drive by itself, thus freeing the operator for other tasks. •Teleremote mining describes a mine process that combines the use of teleremote operation (potentially with some automation), positioning and process engineering, monitoring and control. •Tamrock DataSoloTMis a computerized drilling rig as shown in Figure 1. •Tamrock DataMini™ is a computerized development drill rig used for drifting and construction tunneling as shown in Figure 2.•Tamrock Toro 450™ is a LHD (Figure 3).

This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source.
